#tick born illness

The modern day equivalent of vampirism is tick born ilness.
For example: some little bastard tried to drain you dry so now you’ve got light sensitivity and doctors don’t believe your condition is real.

We had an early morning vet appointment.
It took us 30 minutes less time to walk there than the last few appointments, so Mandana is definitely feeling better and recovering from whatever it was that made her so sick before.
Her thyroid panel FINALLY came back and a few of the numbers were low. This particular combination of low numbers are usually caused by sickness and not hypothyroidism, but we will test again in about 6 months just to be sure.
The university vet clinic wanted me to follow up on her slightly elevated liver enzymes (now normal). They also wanted me to periodically check her blood pressure (also normal) because the medication she is on for her incontinence can sometimes cause high blood pressure.
She had some swelling when I made the appointment a week ago but hasn’t had any since then. They think it was just her body reacting to being put on the Proin but I’m supposed to bring her back in immediately if she swells up again so they can try to figure it out.

She was super well-behaved all morning.
Very responsive and not so eager to sniff while on collar+leash. I suspect that was a displacement behavior from being physically uncomfortable, so I’m glad it’s improved.
She was very polite and waited to be given the “Go Say Hi” cue for greeting staff.
She handled beautifully for all of the testing but I noticed she was a bit more apprehensive about abdominal palpitations since her trip to the university clinic. I’ll need to do some training to make sure it doesn’t develop into anything problematic.
She allowed me to take her shoes on & off in the clinic which was a first. She’s usually trigger stacked enough that I have to put her shoes on outside of the clinic or she’ll protest but she was happy to do it today which is a good sign that she’s feeling better.

I’m happy to have my companion back. Now that she’s feeling better she is eager to play, train and go on adventures again. As soon as I am able, we are going to get back into public access training, but it will have to be on collar+leash only for a while. Her gear shyness has flared up. The harness became a predictor for going out while she was sick & tired. She might have even had joint pain if it was a tick infection, so that could have compounded the issue. We’re doing counter conditioning with the harness for now. There’s no reason to force it on her for outings and walks. She can wear it when she’s ready.

Tumblr is of questionable value in my life, but I’m really grateful to the wasp-defense post/poster because they totally changed my outlook on wasps. I used to be hostile towards them and think it was totally justified, because they were mean and creepy. (they still are a little creepy! but now I think of them as just weird).
I’ve never been a person too skeeved out by bugs. My cousin had a pet tarantula and I was in love. I’m not scared of bees or spiders and while I don’t like to hang out around ants, I just keep them off my person and let them do their job. But I thought it was fine and dandy to be hostile to wasps, and and never questioned why.
Yesterday at the native plant sale, the lady who swooped in to make sure I understood just how cool and important everything was mentioned pollinators, and briefly said “wasps” before hurriedly adding that they were pollinators too. She seemed a little nervous about how I would take the statement (or maybe she said to much), like I would sour on pollinator plants once I heard they may attract bugs or even wasps. But I did not recoil! I already knew that wasps were just guys doing their jobs, and started undoing the conditioning that says wasps are only good when dead.

This looks promising! I hope it goes well and doesn't meet the same fate as its predecessor, LYMERix.

Today I had to tackle the cat with a towel so we could give her her asthma inhaler.
While I am very proud of my ability to move quickly and grab her as she tried to run away without crushing her tiny ancient body, it also was a moment of realizing, "So this is my life now..."

overheard some undergrads(?) in a coffee shop today telling their friends about tumblr. this girl said, and this is verbatim because i immediately wrote it down: “It’s like Facebook but with the vibes of tiktok and twitter. It’s like, a retro vibe? It’s like not older than Facebook, but it’s older than instagram I think”
which. was jarring

I'm trying to write a post about tick safety and avoiding tick bites, but a lot of the info on websites is like "Avoid going in the woods, in plants, and where there are wild animals" and "Activities like hiking and gardening can put you at risk" and I'm like thanks! This is worthless!
As ticks and tick borne illnesses are expanding their range, I think it's important for people to be educated about these things, and I think it's especially important to give people actual advice on how to protect themselves instead of telling them to just...avoid the natural world
Rough draft version of Tick Advice:
Ticks don't jump down on you from trees, they get on you when you brush against grass, brush, bushes etc.
Ticks get brought to an area when they get done feeding from an animal and fall off them. In the USA, the main tick-bringing animal is deer, but I've seen plenty ticks on feral cats and songbirds.
Ticks get killed when they dry out so drier areas with more sunlight are less favorable to ticks.
The above is useful for figuring out whether an area is likely to have lots of ticks, and how vigilant you have to be in that area.
Wear light-colored, long pants outside. Tuck your pants into your socks, and tuck your shirt into the waist of your pants. Invest in light, breathable fabrics idc
IMMEDIATELY change out of your outside clothes when you come back from a tick-prone area, wash them, and dry them on high heat to kill any ticks that might be stuck on.
Shower and check yourself for ticks after coming inside. Hair, armpits, and nether regions in particular. You can use a handheld mirror or rely on touch; an attached tick will feel like a bump kinda like a scab
While you're outside, you can just periodically check for ticks by running your hands down your legs and checking visually to see if anything is crawling on your clothes. Light colors make them easy to spot, and they don't move fast.
Combing through each others' hair to check for creepy crawly critters is a time-honored primate ritual and is not weird. When hiking, bring a friend who will have your back when you feel something on your neck and need to know if it's sweat or a tick
If you're careful, you can usually catch ticks before they bite you, but if one does bite you, it's not the end of the world. Since tickborne diseases are different regionally i suspect this advice will differ based on where you are, but the important thing is remove the tick with tweezers (DON'T use butter, a lit match, or anything that kills the tick while it's still attached, please) and contact a doctor to see what to watch for. Most illnesses you can catch from ticks are easily treatable if you recognize them when symptoms first appear

We did a urinalysis again and it came back normal except her glucose was slightly elevated. The vet doesn’t think it is significant but is going to retest the glucose anyways and get an X-ray of her bladder to rule out bladder stones (apt is on Wednesday). There were no crystals in her urine but we are trying to be thorough.
They offered to put her on some medication to help with the incontinence but it’s so infrequent that I would hate to put her on a longterm medication if we don’t have to, especially since we don’t actually know what is making her sick right now.
I’m going to have to discuss this with the Service Dog Academy and see what this means for us. The vet was confident medicine would prevent any further accidents but I’m feeling really conflicted about the whole situation. We don’t have a definite answer as to what is making Mandana so sick and it does affect her behavior and ability to work. If we can’t find the answers & solutions then I seriously need to consider what this might mean for her career. Especially since she’s only two.
I feel like if this was spay-incontinence then it would be more chronic and not just when she is really sick & taking antibiotics? Am I wrong?

Prayers that my chronically ill Sister can go to Hadestown in September .
She has the tickets…she’s excited..but it would be so easy for her heath to interfere and we would appreciate the prayers.
