Mobile Suit Gundam p2

I’ll just be writing my comments as I watch.

Interesting the attitudes colonists have towards Earth. People living on Earth aren’t “elite,” they’re the hippies of the story. They suffered because they couldn’t adapt to space, and it looks like soldiers from both sides use it as their stomping ground and personal battlefield. Brutal. Apparently the refugees really have no side in general, nor would they want one, as when they spoke to Amuro they told him, “Your enemy is over there” when referring to the Zeons. They just wanna live their lives and these political spats are exploding their homes.

As I had suspected, the jerks that inhabited Amuro’s home were Federation soldiers. I understand the commentary behind abandoned soldiers left without supplies and lodging, but they’re wreaking havoc on the people they swore to protect. By extension, this means the Federation itself is not doing a very stupendous job with actually taking care of people; more and more, it’s looking like this war is actual garbage and holds no merit where civilians are concerned. Soldiers and citizens are suffering, so who is this war actually for? Right, the head honchos. I know the Zeons are the ones that sparked it, but I’m starting to get why if the Federation’s really going to treat its people this way. We get to see there are jerks on both sides.

It’s also a little cruel they show us both perspectives of the war. It’s easier to dehumanize and brush off death against an enemy without a face (ahem Storm Troopers from Star Wars), or to want something eliminated that we know nothing about because we fear the unknown. The bad guy can be scary. In this show, though, nothing’s kept secret from us. Take the beginning of episode 32 for instance, when the Zeon pilot Dimitri wanted to avenge Tokwan. We got to see his confusion as he fought a losing battle against the Gundam, Char’s concern for this idiot pilot that went on a suicide mission. We’re forced to have empathy for both sides by seeing their flaws and weaknesses and how human they really are. It’s honestly just mean how they do that to us. I don’t want either side to lose.

Concepts for a Mobile Suit Gundam Zeon side story I had drafted up that would have taken place on the California Base with Zeon's R & D development. There was a Federation spy x pilot love story involved and some Tokwan, but I never finished it due to a mild lost in interest/needing more research.
