Omg love your page!.. could you write there was a prehistoric reader who was found with pickle and the t-rex, they noticed that pickle was protecting the woman who was visibly pregnant and almost as tall as him (Sorry if you don't write for preg just a head cannon I thought of 😅)
Thank you and no worries, it’s definitely doable! I’m actually surprised to see how popular the idea of a prehistoric reader is. That’s the charm of requests I suppose, other people sharing their unexpected, creative ideas with you.
Baki Headcanons: Prehistoric! Pregnant! Reader
Featuring an extra protective daddy Pickle and his challengers. Since I’ve already done some backstory on a prehistoric reader, this will focus more on the vulnerability of a soon-to-be Jurassic mother and how that tweaks the character interactions.
Tumblr media
Pickle was the first one to awaken and had to be sedated just as fast, since he immediately begun searching for you, increasingly angry. Everyone had to be evacuated and it took several chloroform bombs throughout the building, but they managed to gain some time.
The scientists didn’t necessarily enjoy separating him from his mate, but after the initial shock of discovering the fetus you were carrying, they wanted to see if by some miracle you both could be revived in a similar manner. A prehistoric resurrection was downright ridiculous to begin with, but a pregnancy frozen in time? Peak of absurdity, and a never seen before breakthrough. Everyone could see their names published in top scholarly journals like Nature.
In a race against the clock, they fumbled with the medical machinery in order to confirm the health status of you and your unborn child. They weren’t sure if a second attempt of sedation would be as successful on the enraged, worried father.
Once all the variables are measured and safety is confirmed, they release you to join Pickle and they exhale in unison, grateful to have escaped the wrath of the Jurassic creature.
Pickle is further motivated to fight his challengers, because this time it’s not just about his hunger and entertainment: he has a duty to his mate, and you need to be fed properly. Though you aren’t as excited about digging into these miniature humans. They remind you of children.
The fighters thread carefully around you. While you may look vulnerable, you have a similar build to Pickle and they’d rather not risk underestimating you. Pregnancy can lead to unpredictable reactions if it means protecting the offspring.
You quietly watch over the fights, like a Roman emperor contemplating the fate of his gladiators. Will the matriarch spare the defeated? Pickle is but your humble servant, ready to act on your wishes.
No matter how you look at it, you just can’t stomach the thought. You stroke your fertile belly and feel overwhelmed with pity. The frail humans have impressed you with their strength, but not enough to want their flesh torn apart.
I’m almost convinced that Yuujirou’s mind would immediately wander to the breeding potential the moment he sees you. Just imagine the powerful outcome of combining your ancient warrior genes and his superhuman modern talent. Yuujirou stares at you long enough to trigger Pickle’s suspicions, and he immediately stands in front of you, reminding everyone that he’s the only one whose children you shall carry.
Retsu and Katsumi view motherhood as something sacred and will treat you like an ornate porcelain piece that could break at any moment, if not careful enough. If your mouth twists the wrong way they will join Pickle in a confused, hurried quest to satisfy your cravings.
Baki and Jack are almost as protective as Pickle, especially when Yuujirou is within several meters distance. You find it greatly amusing when the tiny humans form a shield before you, guarding you from unknown dangers. You clap your hands excitedly at all this entertainment provided to you.
You have to remind Pickle to take a break every now and then, rubbing your knuckles into his tense shoulders. He’s been alert ever since you’ve been brought to this mysterious world and you don’t blame him. Everything is new and confusing and you don’t know what to expect. But all that matters right now is that you’re still together and your family is safe. Pickle rests his forehead against yours, touching your stomach in an attempt to detect any movement. His eyes narrow in a smile when he feels the barely noticeable kick. He misses his old world dearly, but his home is not lost. It’s right in front of him.

In the backseat of Steve’s car, squeezed between Dustin and Lucas, while the group disclosed your situation to him, Eddie could barely keep his own thoughts in check.
He felt sick to his stomach, even as the gentle breeze coming from the opened windows hit his face, and the radio played a song that, if he let himself think too much about it, it would remind him of you.
The younger boys explained that you were alone during Spring Break, and that you've been neighbors with the Wheelers your whole life. Last night, Nancy had noticed something strange happening to the lights of your house, and when she went to check on you, you said you were fine, you just thought you saw something, but it was probably just the old electrical wiring. Nancy knew better, though.
Cursed, they said. You were cursed.
They also told him that Vecna didn’t choose his victims randomly, you were all connected through some kind of trauma, all being monitored by the school counselor, like their friend Max, and Chrissy, and Fred, from the school newspaper - both of the former weren’t able to escape, but they could save Max after a breakthrough they had about how music can break the trance caused by the curse.
Eddie wasn’t processing any of that information, though. Their voices seemed to blur in the background, Dustin’s detailed explanations and Steve’s bickering interruptions fading away as his mind wandered to you, who were suffering, unbeknownst to him. The tragic princess in a tale, trapped in the tower of your own mind — and Eddie was no dragonslaying knight, no hero. There was nothing he could do to help you other than trust Dustin's plan to work.
He should have known something was wrong, shouldn't he? He should have insisted on making you tell him what you were going through instead of letting you slip away. Should have, should have, should have.
It was too late now.

4.
Saturdays were the busiest day at the record shop.
Eddie didn't usually visit you on Saturdays, since you never really had the time to hang out with him as you did during the week, when the store was mostly empty — but, that Saturday, he had a mixtape to deliver to you.
A couple of days before you had gifted him with one, wrapped in sparkly purple paper, a small note with his name on it attached to the worn out ribbon tied it all together. You'd explained to him that, even though the two of you had widely different takes on music, those were a few songs that made you think of him, and you thought he'd appreciate them.
Most of the music in your tape was mellow, acoustic songs, the kind of music he imagined you listening to in your room, or driving your car to school — Crosby Stills and Nash, Joan Baez, Fleetwood Mac. Not that he kept thinking about you alone in your room all the time, not at all.
It rendered him speechless. You were casual about it, sliding the cassette on top of the counter in his direction, but he could tell you were somehow shy about it. There was something else hidden under your fleeting gaze, something that had shifted along the way — or, perhaps, it was only his imagination.
Except that something had changed, ever since his friends decided to take a trip to the record store only to mock him for his infatuation with you. Barely noticeable, barely there, but it changed in the way you looked at him, how you'd seemingly always find an excuse to be close — something unspoken lingered in the air.
Then, again, maybe it was only his fertile imagination playing tricks on him. He wasn't used to getting this kind of attention, and it confused him, but Eddie would be damned if he let his feelings get in the way of what you had.
As he made his way into the store, mixtape heavy in the pocket of his jeans, he shoved through a small group of school kids gathered around, looking for you. Spinning on the heels of his well worn boots, his eyes searched the whole room, but you were nowhere to be found. Behind the counter was one of the guys who only worked weekends — Rob? Bob? Honestly, he didn't care much to learn.
"Hey!" He called out in the other boy's direction, who looked up from the tapes he was piling. "Uh… where's Y/N?"
Rob, or Bob, simply pointed in the direction of the steel door that led to the back of the store, a slightly frightened look on his face. That was the reaction Eddie usually got from people, but it never got old.
Smiling, he said "Thanks, man!", and strolled to the back to find you.
The warm afternoon sun was hitting the brown brick wall, where you stood, leaning against it. Sunshine illuminated your features as you blew smoke from the cigarette you were smoking, looking straight ahead. Eddie felt the breath being knocked out of him as you turned, after probably sensing his presence, and smiled.
"Hey, sailor. What brings you here?"
The rasp in your voice made his tummy flutter.
Approaching your side, he mimicked your pose, leaning against the wall. "Came here to thank you for giving me some new music to fall asleep to. Honestly, insomnia? Never again."
"Why did I have a feeling you would say that?"
"Only because you know me so well." You chuckled, playfully squinting at him.
You smiled, turning your gaze to the ground. “Yeah, I think you’re rubbing off on me, Munson.”
It was silent, for a bit. He watched you finish your cigarette, stubbing it into the wall and crushing it beneath your beaten up converse. This was not the comfortable silence you would sometimes fall into, there was something unreadable in your face, dark circles under your eyes weighing on your features. Fighting the urge to reach out and comfort you, he reached into his pocket instead.
“Here,” Eddie handed the tape to you, a simple cassette inside an acrylic case with your name scribbled on top with his handwriting, quickly before he could regret it, “I brought you this. It’s not much but I thought it was fair. You showed me yours, I’ll show you mine, right?”
“Right.” You nodded, securing the tape in your hands. “You’re making that sound a lot more exciting than it actually is.”
When he laughed, you didn’t follow suit, managing only a half smile before you looked away again. It worried him, your silence.
“Is everything alright? You’re a little out of it today.”
“Uh, yeah. Had a tough week, that’s all. Things at home aren’t… great, right now.”
“You know you can talk to me, don’t you? About whatever you want, whatever you need. I mean, the last thing the freak can do is judge you.” He chuckled that last part, but there was no humor behind it.
Looking back at him, your face was still unreadable, but the look in your eyes was earnest, raw. "You're not a freak, Eddie. You're my friend."

ODESA, Ukraine—In his office overlooking Odesa’s Pivdennyi Port on the Black Sea, Viktor Berestenko smiled contentedly at the half-dozen large international cargo ships just beyond the harbor. “It’s as beautiful as your first kiss,” said the grinning president of the Association of International Freight Forwarders of Ukraine. Speaking to Foreign Policy in late March Berestenko was only too happy to inform me that Ukraine’s three free ports—all in and around Odesa—are operating 24/7, and that the country’s grain exports are back to prewar levels.
The restoration of Black Sea trade is a major breakthrough for Ukraine, in stark contrast to the losses it has endured this year on the eastern fronts. In the Black Sea theater, Ukraine has pulled off the unthinkable: beating back the esteemed Russian Navy even though it has next to no naval force of its own.
From the tiny swath of coastline around Odesa, Ukraine has stymied Moscow’s attempt to landlock and hobble its economy by rendering it unable to market its voluminous agricultural exports. In the spring of 2022, the Russian military barricaded Ukraine’s Black Sea ports and brought exports to a standstill. This forced Ukraine to shift to land routes to market its goods and caused worldwide grain prices to spike, which raised concerns about famine in the Middle East and Africa. Today, Russia still occupies 16 Ukrainian ports. But the Black Sea front looks more hopeful for Ukraine than at any time since the war’s onset more than two years ago.
The Ukrainian fleet lost 80 percent of its vessels after the Russian occupation of Crimea in 2014. But, relying a combination of missile systems and unmanned drone boats guided by advanced GPS and cameras, Ukraine’s armed forces claim to have crippled a third of Russia’s Black Sea fleet. They have also upended the Russian supply lines that serve thousands of troops in the occupied areas of southern Ukraine.
On March 24, Ukraine landed another blow, reportedly using U.K.- or French-made air-to-surface missiles, taking out two large Russian landing ships and other infrastructure near the occupied Crimean port city of Sevastopol. Russia’s fleet has suffered such a drubbing that it prompted the firing of its top admiral, Nikolai Yevmenov, in mid-March. Today, Russia’s remaining ships are in docked in berths along the far side of the Crimean Peninsula, out of sight but not entirely out of Ukraine’s reach.
“Russia wanted to turn the Black Sea into a big Russian lake. But Ukraine reversed it,” said Volodymyr Dubovyk, the director of the Center for International Studies at the Odesa Mechnikov National University. “Russian ships today don’t venture into the northwest of the Black Sea.”
This cover has enabled Ukraine to improvise a sea corridor that begins in Odesa and hugs the safe shores of NATO members Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey as ships travel southwest en route to the Bosphorus Strait, through which most Black Sea trade passes. Exploiting a bumper crop, Ukraine is now exporting as much grain—corn, wheat, and barley—as it did before the war, as well as other goods, and has opened its Odesan ports for nighttime business to handle yet more. Prior to the war, Ukraine traded more grain than the entire European Union and supplied half of the globally traded sunflower oil, as well as iron ore and fertilizer, according to Bloomberg.
“This is enormously important for Ukraine’s economy, for the Odesa region, and for our future,” said Sergey Yakubovskiy, an economist at Odesa National University. “We have to do everything to keep this route open and reliable.”
Ukraine’s asymmetric Black Sea strategy relies ever more upon Ukraine-made drone boats—known as uncrewed surface vessels (USVs)—that speed across the water beneath Russian radar carrying up to 800 kilograms (1,760 pounds) of explosives. These projectiles have sunk or disabled some of the 24 lost Russian warships, evidence that Ukraine’s domestic arms production has been stepped up and is increasingly consequential in the absence of anticipated U.S. and European assistance. According to the Guardian, there are currently 200 drone manufacturing companies in Ukraine, some of them bankrolled by crowdfunding campaigns. In December 2023, they delivered 50 times as many robotic explosives as in the entire year of 2022, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation.
Ukraine’s strategy is to maintain its presence in the Black Sea with the prospect of soon acquiring the longer-range missiles that it needs to hit Crimea itself and Russia proper beyond it, Dubovyk said. For Ukraine, he explained, the pressing issue is what comes next. “Crimea is in play, and if Ukraine can put more pressure on Russia there, it can make the occupation untenable. It would change the war’s logic if Russia couldn’t supply the eastern fronts from Crimea,” he said.
Russia’s response has been to target Odesa’s ports, energy infrastructure, and housing blocks with ballistic missiles. Seldom does a day pass without air raid sirens in the port city, which send its residents scrambling into their cellars. In March alone, Russian attacks killed 32 civilians.
One would think that the new coastal sea route would obviate Ukraine’s need to access EU markets via land, namely through Central Europe, and thus ameliorate the friction it has caused between the Central Europeans and Ukraine. Following Russia’s invasion, the EU allowed Ukraine tariff-free access to its markets, which had the effect of undermining the Visegrad Group states’ own grain trade and prompting farmers to take to the streets in anger, above all in Poland. Now, logically, trade could revert to its previous routes and the injurious tiff come to an end.
Not so quickly, explained Yakubovskiy, the economist. He pointed out that Ukraine’s new sea corridor is a temporary and unsanctioned byway, possible now only as a result of Russia’s naval weakness and an informal agreement between Russia and Ukraine not to target civilian shipping. It could end at any moment, he said.
As for Russia, it is not likely to improve its Black Sea positions soon. This is because Turkey controls the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits, and Ankara has chosen to adhere to the letter of the 1936 Montreux Convention, which prohibits the passage of warships through the straights into the Black Sea in a time of war. Russia thus has no way of getting reinforcements to its ports.
The upshot of Russia’s retreat from Black Sea waters and Turkey’s control of the straits has put Ankara in the driver’s seat. Whether Ukraine maintains its new trade route thus depends, to some extent, on Turkey.
In the past, Ankara has shown itself deft at using leverage to promote its own interests, whatever they may be. It could turn Viktor Berestenko’s bliss into a short-lived fling.

They had come to see the book. It was a rarity, a curiosity, even in this most fertile age of literature, with more novels published each year than the last - for, amongst such endless propagation, few survived even a decade down the line. There had been no reason to cling to a single rigid tome, no veneration of the classics, ever since the authors went extinct.
It had happened almost overnight. There had been signs, in the build-up: a sky that darkened at the edges, a scarlet glow beneath the waiting clouds, as computer programs slowly learnt to emulate, to replicate without the usual tells, but the breakthrough had been night and day.
Up until that point, human authors had still stood head and shoulders clear of their artificial usurpers. But once a certain level of fidelity had been reached, they found themselves suddenly surpassed and superseded: they were left to gather dust with their typewriters and keyboards and other obsolete apparatus, taking their place as the latest casualties of progress.
The editors had briefly come to fill their niche, like the terror birds who clung on when the great therapods were gone, able to fine tune this sudden glut of raw material, putting their name to it, still perched on top of the food chain. But it was only a stay of extinction, and soon the software had evolved again, able to churn out perfect novels every time.
Publishers also had their time in the sun, having survived the meteorite's first impact and growing wealthy on free manuscripts, but their part of the production line was perhaps the easiest to automate, having mostly just required time and certain contacts, and the machines could draw upon plenty of both. In fact, they could dispense with the marketing, the retailers - they simply sold a printer with the program installed, and left each purchaser's books to be unique. Every home became a publishing house, and therefore none of them were.
"Is it old?" one of the visitors asked.
"The 20s," the owner confirmed, conjuring up images of that broken time, a world recovering from plague and war.
That had come just before the tipping point, the greatest expansion since the invention of the printing press. Readers could conjure up whole libraries on a whim, and replace them just as easily, the words pulped with the paper and recycled into something new.
There had been fears that the machines would be limited, producing variations on the same theme, restricted by their lack of true imagination, but nothing had been further from the truth. As the products of more input than any human brain could ever dream to hold, they went far beyond any of their forebears, an imagination unlimited by memory or computing power, but free to dream as only a computer could.
If Lovecraft wrote of horrors that no mortal mind could comprehend, the program could produce them, understand them, and describe them on the page. If Asimov envisioned the future, the program could predict it. All world-building was put to shame by software which could simulate whole galaxies, write with perfect historical accuracy, or explore inaccuracies and their consequences with access to all the data that had ever been preserved.
But aesthetes still sought out authenticity, and that brought them to his door. His book was hand-bound in that antiquated way, wearing its maker's mark along its spine, a badge upon its back spelling its name in bar code runes, as much old produce was known to do, before the computers learnt to recognise by shape instead. Somebody had illustrated the cover by hand, finger and brush. It had all been added manually, even the blank spaces inside.
"It's beautiful," they said.

Annie Jacobsen: Inside DARPA: The Pentagon's Brain
Sep 30, 2015
The internet, GPS, voice recognition programs like Siri – many of the technologies that we use today were developed with national security in mind. These inventions and many others began as projects of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Defense Department’s secretive military research agency. For more than fifty years, DARPA has held to a singular and enduring mission: to make pivotal investments in breakthrough technologies for national security. The genesis of that mission and of DARPA itself dates to the Cold War and the launch of Sputnik in 1957, and a commitment by the United States that it would be the initiator and not the victim of strategic technological surprises. Working with innovators inside and outside of government, DARPA has repeatedly delivered on that mission, transforming revolutionary concepts and even seeming impossibilities into practical capabilities. The ultimate results have included not only game-changing military capabilities such as precision weapons and stealth technology, but also major innovations in modern civilian society. How do they do it? What makes this military organization such fertile ground for invention? What technologies with useful daily applications have failed to enter into civilian use? Can Silicon Valley learn from DARPA, or vice versa? Drawing on extensive interviews, declassified memos and inside sources, investigative journalist Annie Jacobsen will share insights into this top-secret organization.
Speaker Annie Jacobsen is an Investigative Journalist and Author.
The conversation is moderated by Andrew Becker, Reporter, The Center for Investigative Reporting.

Seed of Life
When the human female egg is fertilized by the male’s sperm, it takes about 24 hours for the two sets of chromosomes to unite as one.  This then starts the entire development process into becoming a human being.  Of course, there are many stages and pitfalls during the developmental stages.
What is important, according to the breakthrough research done by Professor Michael Levin’s lab, the genes do not have the information to give to the cells where to go, how many fingers to make, nor when to stop.  All this is done by bioelectric fields.  For a salamander to regrow a limb, Michael Leven’s lab demonstrated how this bioelectric field directs the salamander to stop at the correct number of limbs and the exact shape are made.  None of this information resides within the genetics of the salamander.
For human life, when the sperm’s and egg’s chromosomes are joined, there is this bioelectric field.  It is this bioelectric field that directs the location and number of cells for a complete, normal human baby.
The question becomes, where does this bioelectric field come from?  Is it from outside the body, as from the Source?
“ ... humans generally have a head at the top, feet at the bottom, the same features in between, two arms and two legs. This is our body plan and a pattern that’s intricately regulated as we develop as an embryo. Hundreds of different signals are sent between cells to construct our body pattern, but Wnt signalling is particularly important. Wnt proteins are a big, complex family, but why we have so many has puzzled researchers.”
What then directs these Wnt proteins which seem to act within this bioelectric field? From the Source that moves everything?  That is, it is this bioelectric field which is linked to the Source.  The connection.  The physical body with all the cells and neurons and neural patterns (which we call consciousness and mind) all die together!  This field does not.

Understanding Test Tube Baby Treatment:
In vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure consists of fertilization of eggs with sperm outside the body at the lab rather than in the cervix.
The treatment starts with ovarian stimulation medications that are intravenously provided to induce the development of multiple eggs.
These translucent and fragile vitrinous eggs are then retrieved through a minimally invasive method called follicular aspiration.
The sperm is taken from the recipient male’s fertility bank, and the eggs are retrieved from the egg donor, followed by their combination in a laboratory dish to give birth to an embryo.
When fertilization is achieved, and embryos are developed properly they are cultured and inspected for the best result possible.

Agriculture is a big source of emissions. In the US, about 10 percent of greenhouse gases come from livestock or crops—and for a long time, agriculture has lagged behind other sectors when it comes to cutting its carbon footprint. Since 1990, total emissions from agriculture have risen by 7 percent, while emissions from sectors like electricity generation and buildings have declined.
There’s a simple reason for this: Cutting emissions from agriculture is really hard. It’s not like the energy industry, which has readily available low-carbon electricity in the form of renewables. Reducing agriculture’s impact means making tough decisions about what gets farmed and how, and dealing with the notoriously tricky science of making sure carbon stays in the ground rather than being released into the atmosphere.
The US has started getting to grips with these tough decisions. President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act included $20 billion to help farmers tackle the climate crisis. And in February 2022 the US Department of Agriculture announced $3.1 billion in funding through a scheme called Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities (PCSC). The money was intended to fund projects that help farmers adopt more environmentally friendly ways of farming and create a market for what the USDA calls “climate-smart” crops and livestock.
According to the USDA, its plan has the potential to sequester 60 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents—the same as removing 12 million gasoline-powered cars from roads for one year. But some scientists are worried that the PSCS approach is the wrong kind of climate intervention. The government could be channeling billions of dollars to projects that are of uncertain benefit in terms of emissions—or, worse, actually end up increasing overall levels of greenhouse gases.
If the goal is to reduce overall emissions from agriculture, a good place to start is by figuring out where all those emissions come from. It turns out that over half of all agricultural emissions come in the form of nitrous oxide—a potent greenhouse gas released when microbes in the soil break down nitrogen-based fertilizers. Overuse of fertilizer is a huge problem in agriculture, says Paul West, an ecologist at the climate nonprofit Project Drawdown. On top of being a huge source of emissions, excess nitrogen leaches into waterways, causing algal blooms.
Reducing the amount of fertilizer farmers use would be a big win. Remote sensors and machines can help farmers apply fertilizer only when and where it is needed, while smarter forms of fertilizers might reduce the amount of nitrogen that ends up digested by microbes. The crucial thing about these kinds of interventions is that they stop emissions being released in the first place, says Dan Blaustein-Rejto, director of food and agriculture at the Breakthrough Institute. If you never put fertilizer on the ground, it’s impossible for microbes to turn it into planet-warming nitrous oxide. Getting smarter with fertilizer use is one of the biggest changes that US agriculture could make to its emissions footprint.
But fertilizer management plays second fiddle to a different kind of climate project in the PCSC. Of the 60 finalized projects for which the USDA has published summaries, only 12 mention nutrient management or fertilizer application. A much higher number of projects focus on cover cropping—a technique that involves covering fields with crops between harvests in order to slow soil erosion, capture carbon, and keep nutrients in the fields. Since planting cover crops takes time and expense, and can lower the overall productivity of fields, only a relatively small number of farmers use the technique. If the PCSC is successful, however, the number of farmers planting cover crops should shoot up.
Cover crops absorb carbon from the atmosphere and turn it into plant material as they grow, explains Deepak Joshi, an assistant professor at Arkansas State University and the author of a recent paper about cover crops. When the cover crops are harvested or left to rot on the soil, a lot of that carbon gets released back into the atmosphere, but a small amount can remain behind in the soil. If that soil remains undisturbed, then that carbon can potentially remain underground for years. Joshi’s meta-analysis focused on cover crops grown in cornfields around the world and found that, on average, cover crops increased carbon stored in the soil by about 7 percent.
So far, so good. But once you dive down into the details of Joshi’s study, things get more complicated. The research found that the amount of carbon stored varied widely, depending on location, cover crop type, plowing, and the amount of plant growth. A different review, this time examining cover cropping on US farms, found that, in lots of cases, fields with cover crops didn’t gain extra soil carbon when compared to fields that hadn’t been cover cropped. “In terms of climate benefit, it isn’t all that great,” says West.
One of the big limitations to cover cropping is that carbon added to the soil might eventually make its way back into the atmosphere. “What we find is that even where there is a build-up of carbon, once you plow those areas again you lose a lot—or all—of the carbon that has been stored up over time,” says West. If money for cover crops runs out, farmers may start leaving fields bare during off-seasons and plowing them more, which would mean a lot of that sequestered carbon would end up back in the atmosphere. And if the cover crops reduce the overall productivity of fields, there’s also the danger that the practice might encourage more land to be converted to agriculture, which is bad news for overall emissions.
Blaustein-Rejto and West both worry that the PCSC prioritizes sequestering carbon rather than stopping emissions from being released in the first place. One way to think about this is the difference between switching to an electric car today or continuing to drive a gas-powered vehicle while also planting a forest to sequester the carbon you emit. In both cases the overall carbon accounting may net out the same, but sequestering always carries the risk that the carbon might later be released if—for instance—that forest is replaced by a cattle ranch.
Robert Bonnie, the under secretary for agriculture for farm production and conservation at the USDA, says that criticisms of the PCSC aren’t entirely fair. “These are pilots. We’re actually going to go out and try some things. We don’t have all the information we need,” he says. He points out that a number of the funded projects do focus on fertilizer use. “We’re not scared of the math; we’re really interested in getting the math right,” he says.
Bonnie says that the real challenge is to persuade farms to get on board with climate-smart farming. A big focus of the project is to create a market for climate-smart crops and livestock, encouraging buyers to pay a premium for goods made in an environmentally friendly manner. A top-down regulatory approach might discourage farmers from taking part, he says.
In lots of the PCSC projects, the USDA funding is supplemented by money from food companies that buy beef, corn, soy, or other agricultural commodities. One PCSC project run by the Iowa Soybean Association includes $62.1 million in corporate payments from companies including PepsiCo, Cargill, Target, JBS, and Coca-Cola. This is a relatively new form of carbon accounting called insetting, where companies pay for carbon offsets within their own supply chains.
Insetting is rising in popularity, but it has a lot of the same problems as offsets, says Sybrig Smit of the NewClimate Institute, a climate policy and global sustainability nonprofit based in Germany. It might be difficult to assess whether insets deliver their supposed benefits, and sequestering carbon is still less desirable than cutting emissions at their source, particularly when it helps sustain industries that are bigger emitters of carbon. Livestock is the second-biggest source of emissions in US agriculture, so reducing consumption of meat and dairy products is an obvious way to reduce emissions, says Smit. “As a society we’re really scared to touch on our consumption patterns,” she says.
The USDA scheme is stuck in an awkward place. It is supposed to reduce emissions but seeks to achieve that in a way that keeps farmers on board and doesn’t fundamentally change the goods they produce. “We’re going to have beef production and dairy production for a long time to come. And our job is to figure out how to work with those producers to reduce the greenhouse gas impacts to the maximum extent we can,” Bonnie says.
In practice, that means that much money from PCSC will go toward farming soy and corn—a large percentage of which will end up as livestock feed or as ethanol for biofuels. Cover cropping is good for soil health, but its potential to lead to long-lasting carbon storage is uncertain at best. At worst, it could see the US avoiding the kind of fundamental changes to food production that could really bring emissions down.

Cervical Cancer Surgery in India
Cervical cancer originates in the cervix, which is the lowest part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. The fourth most common disease among women is cervical cancer. 2018 saw almost 570,000 women receive a diagnosis. The majority of cases of cervical cancer are associated with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, which is responsible for 99% of cases. It's one of the most effectively treated cancers when detected and managed at an early stage. Two primary forms are recognized: adenocarcinomas (10–20%) and squamous cell carcinomas (80–90%). Cervical cancer is most commonly identified in people between the ages of 35 and 45, and in low- and middle-income countries. HIV-positive women are six times more likely to get the virus, placing them at a much greater risk.
Surgical Advancements: Revolutionary advancements in cervical cancer surgery have been made in India to maintain fertility and improve treatment results. These days, it's increasingly common to use procedures like radical trachelectomy and cone biopsy, which remove malignant tissue without damaging the uterus.
Developments in Radiation Therapy: The developments in radiation treatment for cervical cancer demonstrate India's dedication to remaining at the forefront of medical science. Brachytherapy and External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) are now considered standard treatments because of their ability to precisely target malignant cells.
Customized Chemotherapy for Effective Outcomes: For the treatment of advanced cervical cancer, a combination of radiation therapy and low-dose chemotherapy is successful. India's medical experts carefully customize chemotherapy treatments based on the individual requirements of every patient. The addition of targeted therapy, which targets certain chemicals found in cancer cells, also improves cervical cancer treatment effectiveness.
Immunotherapy: In India, immunotherapy has become a potentially useful therapeutic option for cervical cancer. Immunotherapy provides a focused and individualized treatment by using the body's immune system to identify and eliminate cancer cells.
One of the most important factors in treating cervical cancer successfully is early diagnosis. India has remarkable survival rates because of its dedication to encouraging routine checkups and breakthroughs in treatment approaches. Early detection of cervical cancer can result in a five-year relative survival rate of over 90%, highlighting the profound impact of early and focused therapies. Cervical cancer treatment cost in India is between $3500 to $12000. When combined with top-notch facilities, the affordability of medical procedures makes India a desirable travel destination for patients looking for life-changing treatments. Prominent doctors in the treatment of cervical cancer may be found in India's best hospitals, such as Artemis Hospital, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, and Medanta - The Medicity.
