I have no idea if my obsessive anxiety is calibrated right.

At one end of the scale, we have my brother, who just flings himself into other countries with weird wildlife with nary a care in the world. Bro you do actually have to get vaccines and travel insurance. Please stay out of- ah, too late, he's in bloody Australia for the cricket.

At the other, we had my dad, who I take after a lot, who absolutely refused to go near Japan's free-roaming monkeys. I'm pretty sure that's because as a virologist with untreated anxiety, he had visions of everyone getting macaque herpes and dying of brainsplode.

And then there's me, who just reads a bunch more stuff and learns that all cases of zoonotic macaque herpes (it's transmitted in bites and spit, get your mind out of the gutter) took place in labs where the monkeys were pretty sick and stressed, and nobody has ever caught it from a free-roaming monkey, and decides the risk is theoretically present but acceptable.

WE ALL THINK WE'RE NORMAL.

I'm pretty sure I'm not, actually, because normal people don't think about monkey herpes at all, but I reckon I've got the best spot on that scale.

But I would; I'm nuts.

That was running through his head, very clearly, for all the seconds it took for him to first rest both hands on the surface of the egg, and then, as its shaking calmed, to pick it up and cradle it against his chest, nuzzling and humming softly at it. The light of it dimmed a little, but it was still distinctly warm, like a rock on the beach on a sunny summer day.

By the time his thoughts caught up with his body, there was nothing to do but sigh and murmur, "Really, we are going to have to talk about this. I'm not going to be the guy who hatches a mind-controlling dragon. Or, I mean, I might be but I will be very angry with you about it. Somehow."

if it wasn't for the fact that i cant drive and the bus ride downtown to my social worker's office and school would take literally 2 hours i would be sooo happy living in (substantially cheaper isolated community in the middle of the forest & sea with no light polution) like i really think it could fix me. That's my cure and i will never get it bcuz everything is in "the actual downtown core of the city" and not "a random isolated community in the middle of the forest" 😐
