How to unseize a brake caliper?

Here are the basic steps to unseize a seized brake caliper:

Chock the wheels and jack up the bike so the problem wheel is off the ground. Make sure it's securely supported.

Remove the wheel to access the brake caliper. This may require loosening the caliper bolts first if it's really stuck.

Remove any rust or corrosion from the caliper mounting points, slider pins, and contact areas with an abrasive pad or fine-grit sandpaper. Clean thoroughly.

Apply a penetrating lubricant like WD-40 or TriFlow to the slider pins, bolt threads, and contact surfaces. Let it soak in.

Carefully attempt to move the caliper sleeve or slider by hand. Wiggle it back and forth while applying pressure.

If still stuck, gently use small pliers or a strap wrench on the caliper body to try loosening it up. Don't use excessive force.

As a last resort, very carefully tap the caliper sleeve with a small rubber or plastic hammer to loosen residual bonds.

Re-apply lubricant, reinstall wheel, and test caliper motion. It may take several applications of lubricant/movement over time to fully free it up.

Replace worn slider pins or seals if needed to ensure proper function when unseized.

Patience and gentle, persistent effort is key to loosening a seized caliper without causing damage.

Winter Wind-Down

Dear Friends,

I hope the holiday season has been gentle to you. Personally, it’s been a challenge, but I know I’m not the only one who feels that way. It was the first Christmas with the newest version of our family, though, and I’m so grateful for that. May we have many more holidays together.

Unfortunately, I won’t be publishing the second issue of Triflower this month. For those who don’t know, I published an issue of a zine that features some of my writing. I just haven’t had time to finish up the second issue. One thing I I’ve learned from that short-lived endeavor is that I need to stop imposing deadlines on myself. That being said, I’m thinking of shutting Triflower down in favor of a new project. The new project will do much of the same thing except that it’ll feature work beyond my writing. This little blog will be were I update the world on what Faran’s up to at least for the time being.

Right now, staring out into the cold and quiet expanse of January. On one hand, I welcome the relative calm coming my way. On the other, I’m starting to “circle the drain” mentally. That being said, I’ll be snuggling in for the Winter and just maintain my little world. I'll be going part-time as a student for the last few classes of my graduate program. I’ll not graduate as soon as I wanted to but at least I won’t get burned out on my last and most important class, the capstone.

One thing that will continue at its normal pace is my creative work. No announcements or anything, though. I’ll share more as I finish stuff up. In the meantime...

These bent steel string trees can play hell with your tuning stability all night long. Most factory hardware is left with sharp edges and burs as well as the natural wear that comes with some of these parts. Every place your string makes contact with any part of the guitar we need to make every effort to reduce if not eliminate friction and binding of any sort. Take the extra time on s strat for example and check the through holes on the tuning posts for sharp edges (Mitchell’s abrasive cord works a treat for smoothing those out) which cause string breakage at the post. Check the string tree surface of contact of any sharp edges, debur and polish then lube. Nut slots need to be inspected for proper action at the first fret then break angle towards the headstock and again for any sideways break angle (3+3 Gibson headstocks) after filing then round off the hard edges at the back of each nut slot (especially on the 3+3 style) and lube. Saddles again checked for impressions from string winding, gouges or burs. Edges smoothed over sanded and polished, here comes that damn lube again. And then on most Fender style strat trems, the string leaves the back of the saddle headed towards the block and takes a hard turn over a straight milled hole (again with the sharp edges and burs) through the bridge plate and into the trem block where the string finally ends snugged into the block by its ball end. That sharp edge here is responsible for a shit ton of tuning issues and string breakage issues right there. If you are diligent with this by now you have a strat that will keep tune and have consistent response from the trem arm and will return to pitch like a much more expensive instrument after even hard dumps on the trem arm. Take the extra time and do it right.
