How to get rid of TumblrLive with Ublock Origin on Firefox

see this on your desktop dashboard and want it gone? get Firefox (if you aren't using it already, which you should) and the uBlock Origin extension.

uBlock will appear as an icon on your browser. See that it already blocked 130 elements before I even did anything? Click the icon.

A menu will appear. Click the eye-dropper symbol (expand the menu first if it's not visible; you might have to expand it several times before it shows up).

Hover over the Tumblr Live banner you wish to block. Make sure the red overlay selects the entirety of the element. Click to place the red selection, then pick the option in the uBlock menu to block it.

Et voilà, the banner is gone.

Just read through a bit of The Meet Group's privacy policy for Live. (That being the parent company Tumblr is using to make it work.) It's so long and complicated of course no one is going to look through the whole thing — but there's a clause specifying that you have to agree to arbitration in the case of legal disputes, and that limits you to possibly not being allowed to be involved in class action lawsuits against the company? And there's more... details and stuff... but my brain just starts fogging over after a point here.

I already thoughtlessly agreed to the policy to make the little "NEW" icon go away, so I found the link in the policy to this form requesting exercising certain data protection rights and sent them an email requesting to opt out of it all.

I'm not... a legal professional, and like I said the brain fog took over trying to process the details, but it feels insidious to force you to agree to a sketchy privacy policy in order to make that obtrusive little notification icon go away.

Someone with more spoons who knows better add on if you like.

How to Give Tumblr Feedback on Recent Changes (mobile edition)

Step 1. Go to your settings - these can be accessed from your account tab [top right of screen on mobile, not pictured] and then selecting the cog [also top right of screen on mobile, not pictured]

Step 2. Go to the General settings tab and scroll down - select the Help tab at the bottom of the page.

Step 3. Scroll past all of the colorful buttons and options of the new Help page and select the Contact Support button.

Step 4. This page is often used to report bugs or other problems, but it also has a category for Feedback! Select that category.

Step 5. Give your feedback on recent changes (mobile or desktop or both) in detail. Be polite - the person who reads this report isn’t the one responsible for these changes - but be honest.

Step 6. Recommend others give Feedback if they have some to give! Tumblr Corporate isn’t looking at ‘have you ever even opened TumblrLive?’ or ‘reblog if you hate the new Account tab’ posts. They will look at user complaints, at least numerically, and that might be enough to roll back some of these changes that are making Tumblr…not-Tumblr.

Attention all rogue and weary travelers!

As promised, C U L Y Guild is hosting a tabletop role-playing game themed stream using (loosely) the mechanics of Dungeon World (think Dungeons and Dragons but simplified). TumblrLive Plays Dungeon World Stream begins around 7:00 PM PST! 

Basically, this is going to be a spinoff of Twitch Plays Pokemon where chat will be playing one of the campaign members along with @heyitsyuzu, @hybridmonkey, and me with Game Master @mozzymandiam! EEEES GONNA BE A BUTTLOAD OF CHAAAAOS!

Previously on another stream, TumblrLive chat had created their champion of choice - Gwendoyolyn Jenkins.

A GOTH elven MUTE bard currently employed at Waffle House. Her instrument of choice is a theremin but on the move she carries a peddle steel.

She’s hands down the hottest in all the lands (a natural red head fashioned in a long luscious side braid with freckles dusting over the bridge of her nose like the constellations in the skies, stacked as heck bra size 30J that can be used to smother enemies in close combat, Angelina Jolie lips, blessed with heterochromia - a lazy green eye AND a walled grey eye) but despite this has no ass (think Hank Hill)... which leads to her personal quest of finding an elusive BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift) Wizard - Dr. Miami.

With her trusted sidekick fenrir mount/familiar who can speak on her behalf as they have a telepathic connection, Gwen is ready to set out for her quest to have the hottest bod.

I know that you think just because Elon Musk and his army of chuds are currently laying waste to the toxic shithole that is Twitter, you get to be the new IT girl, Tumblr. But that's not going to happen.

Just because the prom queen got chlamydia and couldn't attend doesn't mean that you should start reaching for the crown, Tumblr. I, at no point, have ever thought to myself that I wanted to see the faces and hear the voices of the people who write Steven Universe fanfiction or unironically consider themselves goblincore.

Especially since you've already tried the Tiktok shtick like less than a year ago and it died unceremoniously. Wel, I have an idea!

I've seen a lot of posts complaining to @staff and by all means, keep complaining!

The thing is, Tumblr Live is powered by an external company: The Meet Group, Inc. They are the ones we should be trying to get rid of.

This company wants to make money. So all we need to do, is cost them money instead.

GDPR law means that, If you live in the EU, you have a lot of rights to acces or view any personal data The Meet Group has collected on you. Since requests to exercise these rights are rare, most companies (including The Meet Group), don't seem to have automatic systems in place to deal with these GDPR requests. They have one or more human persons that they pay to manually handle these requests.

So all we need to do is exercise our rights and request our personal data! They even provide you with a handy form that wil automatically generate a request email for you!

So go ham! set a reminder, and send a new request every couple of weeks!

Try to put some variety in your request! Ask to see your data. Next time, ask for all data to be deleted. Then, ask for some missing data to be added! consent to the Terms of Service, then withdraw your content the next time. Be creative! The more varied these requests are, the harder they wil be to process.

You can also write your own email and send it directly to: [email protected] or [email protected].

You can even call them at 844-534-1340.

By BDPR law, The Meet Group is legally required to fulfil these requests.

Just remember, DO NOT HARASS ANY EMPLOYEES! Waste their time by all means, but please BE NICE.

Non-EU residents

GDPR law only applies to EU residents, but here is the best part:

"We respond to all requests we receive from individuals wishing to exercise their data protection rights in accordance with applicable data protection laws."

That sounds to me like even if you don't live in the EU, someone wil read your request, write an email response to find out if you live in the EU or not, and if you don't, explain that there is nothing they can do for you.

Re Tumblr Live: I found an option in the mobile settings that let you turn it off for 7 days. The week limitation is BS, but it did remove the camera icon for the moment.

Thank you for this! I'm posting your ask publicly so others can see there's a fix. It's so silly that you can snooze it for 7 days, wtf. I'm just going to leave the app deleted off my phone for now. At least on desktop I have no-script and should be able to block it and the company they are partnering with.

Everyone should be aware of how awful the privacy policy is for the company Tumblr is partnering with too. There's been a few posts floating around talking about the data collection side of things.

I'm very curious how much work and research Tumblr did into live streaming before starting this. I swear Twitch is only working at this point because it's owned by Amazon and therefore has direct access to AWS (and even then Amazon recently told Twitch to bump their shit up and cut down streamer's profit cause the server costs are wild). The potential problems in live streaming requiring moderation is an interesting angle too. Seems like a huge financial and structural decision in terms of what this site is and has been. I'm not against change mind you, but throwing the video icon button into the app like that is giving me some big Instagram flashbacks and at this point I loathe Instagram and the feeling I get when I open that app.

None of these are real tumblr users, I swear. Given the influx of spam bots lately I honestly couldn’t tell you if a blog with this avatar was human or not. On another note lmao they got rid of the viewer numbers in the preview carousel because they know nobody is breaching the triple digits. Probably sub-40 numbers at best.
