Animal Crossing Fish - Explained #237c
Brought to you by a marine biologist and gastropods (who are also weird)...
CLICK HERE FOR THE AC FISH EXPLAINED MASTERPOST!
Here's the last installment of the ACPC shells miniseries. The diversity of mollusks that AC shows is pretty great, though I wish some of these weirdos made it into the mainline games. Mollusks can be broken down into three major Classes the everyday person would recognize (there are others, but these are the well known ones) - Bivalvia, Gastropoda, and Cephalopoda. Today we're looking at the Gastropods, the snails and slugs and the most numerous of the mollusks at a hefty 70,000 species. Let's get into it~
Strawberry Top Snail
Tumblr media
In every way, the shell of the Strawberry Top Snail (Clanculus puniceus; STS from now on) is so reminiscent of a goddamn strawberry and I can't get over it. It's so bright and vibrant. The STS is native to the Western edge of the Indian Ocean near Madagascar, South Africa, and Mozambique. Top snails are named so because they look like an old-timey spinning toy. They are generally herbivores, scraping algae off rocks with their radula, a spiky tongue-like appendage in the mouth of Gastropods that lets them scrape food, whether that be plant, meat, or detritus. The STS is an herbivore and can generally be found in the intertidal zone stuck to a rock eating algae. What a life!

Anatomical Murex
Tumblr media
If you think this shell is odd, I've got news for you - there are about 1,600 species within this animal's Family, Muricidae with growth like this. Most snails in this family have some of the most complicated yet beautiful shells with strange protrusions, spikes, bumps, and ribbing. These protrusions are called varices (singly: varix), and they are extremely important in identifying the species that have them. These snails are texture gods. The Anatomical Murex (Homalocantha anatomica), also called Pele's Murex, often has 5-6 varices per whorl in its shell. They can be found in the Red Sea, throughout the Western Pacific to Hawaii.

Guildfordia Yoka
Tumblr media
I honestly couldn't tell you why ACPC decided to call this by it's scientific binomial, but such is the mystery of AC. It's common name is the Yoka Star Turban (Guildfordia yoka; YST from now on), and it is a type of turban shell snail. It belongs in the Order Trochida along with the Strawberry above. That relation to top snails is more obvious in the picture below. The YST is a tropical species of the Indo-Pacific near Japan down to The Philippines.

Cat’s Eye shells and where they’re from
The “Smooth Moon Turban” snail is a simple creature common in the tidepools. These beautiful spiral pearls specifically come from the snail’s Epiphragm, a door of sorts, protecting the snail’s interior from exterior dry environments.
My mother used to collect these types of shells when she was younger.

Turbinidae vera
So I decided to create a snail species. It's called Turbinidae vera. They live in a wide range, but mainly span from the East Indies to Australia. They are closely related to Green Turban snails (Turbo marmoratus) (this one's real). They feed mainly on kelp and plankton, however, they do occasionally feed on algae.
Here's the snail:

What are the chances that I made up a whole new species of marine snails only to end up naming it after me you may ask?
Very likely.

Sazaedo is a Buddhist temple built in 1796. Its architecture is similar in shape similar to the shell of a horned turban (‘sazae’ in Japanese) hence its name ‘Sazaedo’. The inside of the temple consists of a double-helix slope, meaning that visitors who come to pray won’t meet anybody coming from the opposite direction. This one-way system makes Sazaedo extremely unique. In 1995, it was appointed as a National Important Cultural Property. Photography by yuuui

A scrimshaw turban shell carved with the Leviathan, c. 1858
Originally named ‘Leviathan’ this huge ship, the brainchild of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, is more famous as the ‘SS Great Eastern’.
She was an iron sail-powered, paddle wheel and screw-propelled steamship built by John Scott Russell & Co. on the Isle of Dogs, and the largest ship ever built at the time.  She had the capacity to carry 4,000 passengers from England to Australia, via India, without refuelling.  Brunel died shortly after her maiden voyage, but she continued as a passenger ship until 1866, when she was converted to a cable-laying ship and laid the first lasting transatlantic telegraph cable in 1866.

ROY G BIV tag game
Thank you for the tag @druidx!
Rules: Search your WIP for the colours of the rainbow and post the excerpt
Scarlet:
All around her, the walls closed in, the California Limited no longer a beetle but a long and snaking centipede, shell hulking and clicking where the pieces rubbed occasionally. Through the narrow doorway, the dark gave way to warmth; glossy wood paneling, rows of scarlet upholstery, brass luggage racks, all lit with gas lamps burning merrily on the walls.
Orange:
“Spare me your endless philosophies,” Felicia dismissed. Drawing her gauzy robes tighter around her tall and angular frame, she stood and stared out the window. With her hair hidden beneath a turban of wrapped orange cloth, she brought to mind a haughty long necked bird. She was waiting, Velia knew, so quickly and methodically, she laid out her spoils from the day.
Gold: [first Fynn description!]
The newcomer leaned against the door. Velia stared at him, willing him to move. He was tall and gangly; a well placed kick might do him in. Thin too, from his pale nose to his bony hands. His most redeeming quality was the halo of golden of curls framing his face that Velia was most certainly not jealous of, no siree.
Green:
Velia reached into her pocket and flicked open her mirror compact. Her faded green eyes stared back at her. Freckles, too-small nose, pale brown hair. She was still there. It was hard to doubt you were still there when your body felt unfortunately tethered to the ground like always, but Velia appreciated the reminder from time to time.
Blue:
For a moment, caught up in the freezing metal biting into her hands and concentrating on moving quickly and silently, she didn’t quite realize what she’d done. It wasn’t until her boot landed on the roof of the train that it sank in. The California Limited spread out in front of her, a mass expanse of iron flying through the blue-gray dusk. It looked awfully thin for a beast holding several hundred people and a hundred more tons of goods.
Purple:
There was nothing but deep purple sky behind her. She shifted and the bolt moved with her. She was kneeling on a hatch. She slid the bolt free and wrestled with the door. It wasn’t budging. Struggling, she glanced over her shoulder again. Her pursuer was still nowhere to be seen, and somehow, this was more frightening than his tall silhouette.

Turbo is not a Turbo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is a genus of snails called Turbo. The titular snail Turbo from the 2013 movie Turbo is not a Turbo.
Turbo is called turbo because Turbo is the type genus of Turbinidae, the turban snails, presumably named such because their turbinated shells so strikingly do not resemble turbans. They also resemble turbochargers, but not turbines.
Determining Turbo's true species is quite turbid, but we can say for sure that Turbo is not a Turbo because Turbo is a land snail while Turbo are sea snails. Turbo live under the sea on turbidite sediments and among the turbot fish. Turbo cannot do this, he breathes air, much like that produced by turbeth plants.
Turbo.
