TWINcognito mode (Tim and Danny Pretend to be Twins AU)
AO3, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6
Danny was floating in contaminated ectoplasm, which was absolutely fucking disgusting. If this was Beelzebub’s idea of a prank, then Danny was going to fill his precious lava lake with jello.
‘Come with me,’ he’d said, ‘We’ll go spy on the living for some fun,’ he’d said.
Then the stupid Demon had knocked him out and now Danny was suspended in the equivalent of sewage.
But something wasn’t right; he had memories that weren’t his and a fighting style that itched under his skin, and his sense of self was muted in a way that only the living felt.
Then the ectoplasm drained, and-
-Danny stood at attention in front of a strange man who was giving off serious stranger danger vibes, bewildered, as said man droned on and on about how he may be another version of Timothy but he would be just as formidable-
-Danny was standing on top of a building, and by this point he was pretty sure that he’d been brainwashed. He needed to find his progenitor, Tim would know how to overcome-
-He was staring at himself, and the self he was staring at stared back in turn.
“Ra’s?” He asked.
“Ra’s.” He answered.
“Brainwashing?” He asked, tilting his head.
“Yes,” he answered, holding his arms out to allow the hit he knew was coming, “Can you undo it?”
His other self smirked.
“I know better than anyone what I’m capable of; of course.”
Red Robin swung out his arm, Danny felt a prick in his neck, and he fell-
-Danny woke up, and for the first time in who knew how long (he knew, it’d been roughly a month of not being himself and also being himself, removed but there), he felt like he was actually present. He could hear Tim rummaging around the kitchen, hear the distant sounds of the city, and started taking stock.
His wrists and ankles hurt, as did his neck. His muscles were sore, like he’d been thrashing around or fighting back. Given the state his progenitor must have dragged him back in, both were likely. He’d likely need further work with an actual therapist to undo the rest, but his head actually felt pretty clear. There were some lingering traces, and he was sure he’d hesitate if he heard a certain phrase or eight from Ra’s, but those could probably be slowly worked out of his system.
Sure, he could just die and go back to being a nearly all-powerful god thing, but…he’d kinda missed being alive. Plus, it wasn’t like he’d completely lost his powers. He could still feel them, they were just muted.
He knew he could fly, had a bit of supernatural strength, could still toss energy bolts and create a shield, but the other powers? Locked away and sealed into his incorporeal form. The powers he just intimately knew he had were the only ones that his current moral body could handle.
So at least he still had a piece of his original self; it would help differentiate him from Tim. A whole person he hadn't known, but now knew better than he’d ever known Jazz. It was weird to think about. At least when Dani had been made, she hadn’t been forced to take reconstructed versions of his memories.
Slowly, he sat up; wincing as the electrodes on his skin fell off. He felt shaky, strained, and…wait.
“Did you just…shock the brainwashing out of me?” he asked, watching as Tim rounded the corner and handed him a cup of coffee.
The laugh that Tim let out was just short of unhinged; a memory that Ra’s hadn’t known to replicate then.
“If electroshock was good enough to turn me into JJ, then theoretically it should be good enough to train my brain away from League brainwashing,” Tim snorted, and Danny was suddenly very sure he Didn’t Want To Know, “We’ll have to keep an eye on you to make sure though. Probably set you up with a therapist or eight.”
“I’m sure the Justice League would have some good suggestions,” Danny agreed mildly, sipping his coffee, “We just need to follow proper protocol for finding a clone that isn’t brainwashed or needs assistance overcoming brainwashing.”
Tim sipped his coffee.
Danny sipped his coffee.
“But we don’t want to do that, of course.”
“Oh no, no we do not. It’s been too long since we’ve had fun, I think.”
“And wouldn’t you know it; I thought of something funny. Wanna do it?”
~~~~~~~
It was funny.
For them, anyway.
The overall gist was; Danny would go to Dinah for therapy, and they’d have to trust in her professionalism to keep his existence secret until he was ready.
Ready for Danny meant, of course, when he and Tim finally got made by the rest of the Batclan.
They were going to play it off that Tim had always had a twin. Daniel Janus Drake-Wayne had always been there, pushed into the background because his parents didn’t want an accident with his powers to get out to the press.
And hadn’t that been a shock for Tim, to learn that his clone-twin had powers?
They’d managed to work it in, though.
So the plan was to make it seem like they’d never hidden that Tim was a twin, doctor literally every single piece of evidence they could electronically to show that Tim had a twin, and work in shifts to drive the family up a wall. All photos had been doctored, signatures had been forged, they’d even forged Bruce’s signature on some doctored adoption papers.
“Oh, I’m emancipated. Do you want to be?”
“Nah, it’d be even funnier if they thought they’d pushed the one still under his guardianship out of the manor.”
“A bit cruel, but yeah that’d really make them scramble. Perfect.”
They would, eventually, start dropping hints that they weren’t there for XYZ meeting, etc.
The family had pushed Tim to the side, and like, sure, it wasn’t really a big deal. But it was super inconsiderate and by proxy they’d also pushed Danny to the side as well, so payback was a bitch and payback was making the entire batfamily question their abilities as detectives and good family members.
“We should get Kon and Bart in on it. Cassie as well, we’ll never sell it without her.”
Tim nodded, already sending out a coded text to his friends. They’d arrive in two hours, when they could make enough excuses to leave without getting caught or raising suspicion.
“I think we should divide up the time they’ve seen us and say that some of that time, for the more public appearances, it wasn’t me.”
“Ohhhh, try to remember the ones you were super uncomfortable at and we’ll say that was me.”
Danny and Tim grinned at each other.
The prank was way too involved, way too intricate, and they were having way too much fun planning it to stop and think about potential consequences.
“Currently I’m trying to break open a pretty big case, I need you to fill in for me at family brunch in a week. Then there’s an extended training exercise in the woods for a week immediately afterwards; all of us are to attend. Substitute heroes have already been selected for our territories. Is that doable?”
“Sure, I’ll get started on freaking them out. Nothing too obvious, but I’ll have to target Bruce a bit differently if I want to avoid confrontation.”
“Of course.”
“I think I like puns. I’ll start with those.”
“Practice now and perfect it; that way it doesn’t seem like you’re new to them.”
“Of course, I’m practice-ly a natural.”
The dead eyed stare that Danny got was worth it.
~~~~~~
Danny stared at his new drivers license; it was designed to look a bit roughed up and older. It was almost identical to Tim’s, picturewise.
He hadn’t really been thinking about it, but he was kind of starting to really like the idea of having an identical twin. He was still hashing out his personality versus the one that Ra’s had tried to install in him, but he felt like having someone to call family, even as a prank, would help him figure it out.
He could still feel echoes of his family bonds, and there was a tentative new one between him and his…twin. He needed to think of himself as that to prevent referring to himself incorrectly in the future.
There were the faint bonds to his parents and his sisters, back in the Infinite Realms, and even fainter ones going to who he assumes were the ‘batfamily’. He hadn’t told Tim, and he was pretty sure he didn’t need to, but he was grateful to get to know them outside of the designation of ‘that clone that got dropped on us’.
And there were Tim’s friends; they’d dropped by, oohed and ahhed, and declared Danny their friend as well. Danny wasn’t sure if the friendship would last, but again; the more family or friends he had, the more secure he felt about himself.
So even if they were on loan from Tim, Danny was grateful for them.
Also they had been 100% on board with gaslighting the batclan and seeing who would notice. From Danny’s memories he had based from Tim’s, he was certain Cass would find out first.
He was pretty sure she’d go along with it.
Danny knocked his forehead on the window as the Uber came to a sudden stop, and the driver nervously looked back.
“Uh, here we are Mr. Drake-Wayne,” the poor man looked like he was terrified to be parked in front of the gates to the Manor, “I can assure you of Uber’s ability to keep customer IDs secure though, there really wasn’t a need for a fake-”
“It isn’t, thanks,” Danny said quietly, letting himself out and walking towards the gates.
This place…was so much bigger than his generated memories recalled.
He heard the Uber tear away, and focused on trying to muster up the courage to walk through the gate. He’d gone over it with Tim, it would be easy. All he had to do was just go in there and socialize.
Was the anxiety he was feeling a Danny trait or a Tim trait? Shit, did one of them have anxiety? Did both of them?
He could almost hear Jazz berating him in the back of his mind, going on and on about taking his mental health seriously. He would have to tell Dinah and talk about feelings.
Gross. He wasn’t looking forward to-
-A car horn blared behind him, almost causing him to give up the game early as he spun around and glared at Jason, a hand behind his back and ready to summon a ball of ecto-plasmic energy.
Jason glared right back.
“Come on shitstain, did you forget how a fucking gate works?”
Danny frowned. What would Tim do?
Another car directly behind Jason’s honked its horn in response.
“Don’t be rude, Jason!” Ah, Dick. A…A witness. Danny had himself a witness.
Ah.
Aha!
That was what Tim would do.
Danny smiled serenely, taking great pleasure at the sudden paranoia and confusion that flashed over his older brother’s face.
“Don’t,” Jason warned softly, grip on the steering wheel tightening.
Danny moved towards the car.
“Timberly I swear to god-”
Danny walked to the car-a classic 1970 mustang, nice-and gently ran his hand along the hood.
Jason snarled and tapped the gas, clearly only intending to spook Danny away from the car.
But Danny stepped forward and into the giant, mostly steel vehicle’s momentum. He made sure to use a little extra strength to dent the front, certain that his mortal body would bruise, and dramatically dropped down.
“What the fuck-” “Tim!” The scream Dick let out was nothing short of guttural, and Danny realized he may have forgotten to take into account the possible PTSD of both siblings.
The door to Dick’s car slammed open and the eldest of them bolted around Jason’s car towards Danny, only for the footfalls to pause long enough for Dick to deck Jason in the face. Perfect. Yes, yes this would do.
Danny grinned as he picked himself up off the ground, quickly wiping it off his face before Dick could notice it.
Jason saw it.
Jason’s glare intensified as Dick hurried towards Danny.
Danny allowed himself to be dragged away from the front of the Mustang and turned his head just enough to stick his tongue out at Jason, safely where Dick couldn’t see.
The blackening eye really did suit the man, Danny thought to himself as he was bundled into the back of Dick’s car. But it was as the Ancients said; talk shit, get hit.
~~~~~~
Cass had frozen at the top of the steps and just stared at Danny as Dick fretted over him.
Danny stared up at her and smiled, allowing his giddyness at the prank to show in his body language for a half a second.
Cass smiled back, letting out a short laugh before she descended the stairs. She made a point to glare at Jason and protectively put a hand on Danny’s shoulder.
Jason spluttered, gesturing violently towards her and then towards Danny. The third oldest snarled when Cass very obviously turned her head away from him, before finally scoffing and storming into the dining room.
“You’re all fucking against me! I’m gonna remember this you little asshole, you better be prepared!”
Danny snickered and stepped out of Dick’s hold.
“I really am fine, you can stop-”
“Tim, I know you and Jason don’t get along but please don’t ever make him hit you with his car again. What if it had been serious?”
Danny flushed, averting his gaze. Damn, he thought he’d done a really good job of acting too.
“Look at this!” Fingers brushed his hair out of his face, focusing on poking at a small bruise on his forehead from the Uber window, “This bruise is gonna be awful, what were you thinking?”
“If you knew, then why did you punch him?” Danny grumbled, the flush increasing as Cass started tousling his hair.
Dick snorted.
“He shouldn’t have made the threat to begin with; we all know you don’t handle threats well or normally.”
Danny opened his mouth to defend himself, but was stopped by a large hand resting on his shoulder.
“Tim, what’s this about Jason hitting you with his car?” Bruce asked, concern managing to worm its way into his voice.
“I’m fine-”
“Tim, your version of ‘fine’ is two days of no sleep and a broken arm,” Dick interrupted, sounding very much like a tired father himself.
“Well, they said ‘break a leg’ but I needed those.”
Dick and Bruce froze, both turning an evaluating gaze on Danny.
“Oh no,” Bruce sighed, reaching out to trace the bruise on Danny’s forehead, “He’s got brain damage.”
“Hey Tim, nice to see you,” A voice loudly interrupted. The voice that said it, for how bright it was, sounded downright cold.
The group froze, all heads turning as one towards Barbara. She was smiling, but it wasn’t a nice smile, and any who knew her (or knew of her well enough to probably know her) knew better than to think she was actually happy.
“I can run the equipment downstairs to make sure he isn’t brain damaged, no need to bother Leslie. Besides, we need to have a little talk.”
~~~~~~
Danny sat on the medical cot.
Bruce and Dick had run to the dining room as soon as they could, the cowards.
Barbara sat in front of him, her fingers steepled as she waited for her own tech to outdo the Bats.
Her phone let out a small ding, and she finally nodded. All recording devices except hers were active. Tapping at her phone, she held it in front of her as his own voice echoed through the speaker.
“Ra’s?”
“Ra’s.”
Man, their voices sounded almost identical. The only real difference was the inflection used.
“Brainwashing?”
“Yes, can you undo it?”
It really sounded like he was just having a conversation with himself.
“I know better than anyone what I’m capable of; of course.”
The recording stopped. Barbara set the phone back down on her lap.
“So. I could swear that you weren’t on any records at all prior to two weeks ago, Daniel. Mind explaining how that happened?”
Danny did mind. The prank had seemed like such a good idea in the beginning, but actually explaining it made it seem dumb in hindsight, and Barbara was scary and reminding him of Jazz-
“The only reason I didn’t rat you out and set the Bats on you is because Cass didn’t say you were a threat. Where’s Tim, Daniel?” Her words were sweet, but Danny knew better.
The time for games was suspended, and he needed to rat out his twin.
“Uh, he’s in the Nest. There’s a meta-trafficking ring, and he’s been trying to find out who the leaders are for like, a month.”
Barbara groaned, reaching up to rub her temples.
“What, so he decided to trade places with his ‘twin’ at the last minute to avoid brunch?”
“And training.”
“Of course he did. I’m assuming he’s also largely responsible for all the documents detailing that you’ve existed forever. What are your thoughts on all of this?”
Danny shifted, uncomfortable with being forced to consider his own feelings on the matter when he was still trying to figure himself out as a person. What he did know, however, was that he was very much okay with this.
Maybe a carefully political answer would appease her?
“It’s a nice, slow way to introduce me to this family without the stigma of being a, ah…’twin’. I’m still recovering from my time with Ra’s, so something like this is just a fun way to get to know everyone. Secretly.”
Barbara’s stare, much like her, was not impressed.
Okay, fine.
“Alright; it may be payback for being assholes to Tim when Bruce was gone and we may want to mess with them. Nothing big, just see how long it takes them to notice? We already have something to hold over them since they didn't realize right away. We’re treating it like a training exercise as well. Pretty much only you and Cass passed.”
Now she looked mildly intrigued.
“...Do you wanna be a part of the test?”
Barbara sighed and threw her hands up.
“Sure, why not. I’ll play along. I do have a condition, though.”
Danny nodded, staying exactly where he was and trying not to vibrate in place.
“I want to use your ‘past’ to teach Bruce about the importance of communication.”
Danny had no idea how she would do that, but sure. As long as he got to fuck with these people, he was fine with whatever she did with his doctored history.
“Yeah, sure, sounds good.”
~~~~~~
Brunch was…an affair.
Damian tried to poison him, Jason kept kicking him under the table, and Dick kept trying to put more food on his plate.
So, Danny stared Jason dead in the eye as he reeled his foot back and kicked with enough force to shove Jason’s chair back a good foot.
Then, turning his attention to Damian, he held the little shit’s stare as he picked up the toast that had been tainted, slowly lifted his hand, and shoved it into Dick’s mouth without looking.
“Thank you Dick, but you should toast-ally have some.”
He felt Dick smile delightedly against his hand.
“Richard, do not swallow that! Spit it out!”
“No Dick, eat it; teach the little demon that there’s consequences to his actions.”
“Did you just try to tip my chair? You little shit-”
“I have the antidote, Big Brother.”
“Thanks Cass! Dami, we’ve talked about this-”
“Master Damian, there will be no poison at the table.”
“Tim, why would you put poisoned toast in Dick’s mouth?”
“Guys why is Tim weird-”
“He’s always weird Duke, I’ve seen him stay up for seventy-two hours just to prove a point.”
“No but there’s something really, really weird about-”
“I’m fine Duke, it’s just a little side effect from the Lazarus water.”
“Wait, the what?”
“The what?” Bruce’s voice ripped through the air, silencing everyone.
Danny frowned. This wasn’t technically something he was supposed to do, but…as the younger twin, he felt it was his responsibility to also inconvenience Tim. His job description was to be a sibling of this family, and a younger sibling he would be. He’d been a little brother once before, and he’d gladly do it again. To the fullest extent of his abilities.
Also he felt like Tim should have asked for help regarding his stalker problem ages ago.
“Well, Ra’s keeps trying to woo me and chases me around Gotham. I was bound to get dosed at some point, it’s not my fault.”
The chaos that ensued after that statement did Danny’s heart some serious good. Yes, this was perfect.
~~~~~~~~~
The batplane was a fun experience. Genuinely; Danny hadn’t gotten to enjoy the flight over to Gotham, and flying was fun no matter the form it took.
“Drake.”
Oh, Danny had been looking forward to this one.
“Wayne.” Danny responded, fighting to keep the joy out of his mouth.
He got to be the big brother this time. Him! Damian was a tiny terror, but he had nothing on the chaos gremlin that was Dani. There was only one thing Danny could do here; destroy Damian’s composure.
“Good, you know my name-”
“Yet you don’t seem to know mine,” Danny sighed, putting on his best disappointed face, “You keep saying Drake but never the full thing; Drake-Wayne.”
Behind Damian Dick was mouthing words at Danny. Probably such words that would tell Danny to behave.
What a pity that ‘Big Brother’ did not mean ‘Parent’, then. Not that Danny had such a good reputation for listening to his parents, and Tim never listened to Bruce anyways.
“I refuse to call you a name that you do not deserve-”
“Hey Bruce, did I trick you into signing my adoption papers?” Danny called out over Damian, drawing Bruce’s attention away from talking to Jason, allowing a shit-eating grin to stretch out over his face.
“No, Tim.”
“Hey Bruce, am I still adopted?”
“Yes, Tim.”
“Hey Bruce, are you gonna send me back-”
“Tim, we’ve been over this. There is nothing you could do that would make me overturn my decision. You are a part of this family, emancipated or not, and there is no escape.”
Huh. While that answer had been a bit more passionate than Danny had expected, it still worked.
“Sounds like I earned the name, Dami.”
Damian’s face was growing red with rage. Luckily, Danny knew just what to do to make it worse; by layering on sarcasm.
“But don’t worry, as your big brother I understand that it is my duty to lead by example. So I forgive you, el-witwaat, for your mistakes. Maybe when you’re older, you won’t make such obvious oversi-”
Danny jerked to the side, dodging the knife and breaking out into slightly hysterical laughter.
“I will find you this week,” Damian hissed, his arms restrained by Dick, “And I will kill you.”
“Timothy, stop antagonizing Damian. Damian, stop threatening Tim.” Bruce sounded every bit the tired dad he was.
“But he-!”
“What was that name you called him?” Duke interrupted, turning his seat. Damian let out a wordless cry of rage, struggling with Dick to get out of the chair so he could presumably stab Danny into silence.
“Oh, what name?” Danny asked, resting his chin in his hand and watching Damian with a wide smile. “Do you mean Dami? That’s the nickname that Dick gave him. Or-oh, wait; did you mean el-witwaat?”
“Cease this at once! Richard let me go-!”
“Sorry Duke, it’s a nickname that only I get to use on him.”
Damian froze, narrowing his eyes at Danny suspiciously. Good. He was right to be suspicious, because Danny wasn’t done.
“But it means the sound that a bat wing makes when it’s flapping. It basically means flip-flap.”
“That’s adorable,” Dick breathed, accidentally letting go of their youngest.
Bruce had to put the plane on autopilot to wrangle Damian and force their youngest to calm down.
~~~~~
The week of training was largely uneventful. For Danny, at least.
Danny found out he could still turn invisible and density shift, and promptly spent the entire time reenacting the poltergeist movie on his new siblings.
Jason kept waking up in entirely different parts of the forest they’d chosen, miles away from the checkpoints. Jason had opted to not sleep, which was doing wonders for the ‘ragged and deranged’ look he was going for.
Danny’s personal favorite moment was pretending to walk into a clearing just as Jason was waking up, surrounded by sticks, and idly commenting “Wow Jason, it looks like you’re in a…sticky situation.”
The wordless screech of rage had been music to Danny’s ears.
Damian was driving himself into the ground trying to hunt down Danny, who just maintained invisibility and density shifting to keep just out of Damians reach for literal hours each day before leaving to mess with the others.
Danny took great pride in that he managed to tuck Damian in every night without waking him up, thoroughly confusing the little demon just as much as he was bruising the kid’s ego.
Duke was left alone. Not because Danny thought he should be spared from their sibling bonding exercise, but because he’d see Danny coming thanks to his powers. There was literally no way for Danny to sneak up on him, and he was pretty sure Duke had clocked him as Not Tim anyways.
Dick lost his socks. All of them. Even the ones on his feet. Then Dick lost his sleeping bag. Finally, Danny collected as many spiders as he could and tucked them away, all neat and tidy, into Dick’s bag.
Dick had been an asshole, and justice needed to be served.
Danny did not feel satisfied or vindicated, however, as when Dick opened his bag and was met with the spiders, all he did was nod and step back to allow them to escape, only saying “Yeah, I deserved that. Good job Tim, I didn’t see you at all!”
Danny retreated. He’d have to have a planning session with Tim to plan a way to get back at Dick properly, then.
Cass was spared out of fear.
Bruce, though. Bruce was approached differently.
If Danny used his powers, there was a chance that the Detective would pin Danny as Not Tim, and with insufficient evidence there was a risk of being seen as a threat. Danny very much wanted to avoid an interrogation.
So Danny had opted to leave his new-old drivers license on the plane as the group was dropped off at various points; he knew the Bat as well as Tim. He knew that Bruce would find the ID, knew he would search it, and knew he wouldn’t say a word until he was sure about something.
And Danny, thanks to Tim’s memories in his mind, also knew that Bruce would never admit to a mistake as big as missing the fact that your adopted son was a twin. Bruce would try to guess who was who, and pretend like he’d known the entire time.
When Danny had stopped by the Base Camp to check in, Bruce had three tablets in front of him, all with information on Danny, and was cradling his head in his hands.
The only thing he heard Bruce say was something about possible brain damage, dimension travel, and messing up the time stream.
Then Bruce had frozen and scrambled for one of the tablets.
Danny decided he’d seen enough, and he was missing out on Damian time.
By the time the week was up, Cass and Duke looked refreshed, Danny accomplished but exhausted, and Dick, Jason, and Damian nearly crawled their way into Base Camp.
And Bruce?
Bruce refused to meet Danny’s eyes, and tried every way possible to avoid saying the name ‘Tim’, but also avoided saying ‘Danny’. Good. He wasn’t sure which one Danny was.
The groundwork had been laid.
Danny felt like patting himself on the back; this was a job well-done.
~~~~~~
Upon Danny’s return to the Nest, he and Tim compared notes about everything that had happened over a nice cup of coffee.
“Oh, also I’m pretty sure Bruce thinks that he fucked up the time line when he was trapped, and that that’s why he doesn’t remember me.”
“Oh! That’s perfect! Yes, that’ll stop him from mentioning it to anyone else. We’re in the clear to proceed as normal.”
The future was bright, and the road to happiness was paved with their family’s confusion.

Prompt 162
“So,” Danny drawled from where he was sitting, legs kicking slightly. Really, what a fun reincarnation. A world with heroes and villains where he didn’t have to do shit in and could just vibe with Ellie.
“So,” Tim responded from where he was typing on his computer, mostly in civilian clothes save for his gauntlets and boots. The Red Robin outfit was haphazardly dropped across the couch and his pole leaning against the end.
“Technically there’s proper procedures for clones…” Danny motioned to both himself and Ellie from where they sat on the counter, snacking on a plateful of scones. From Alfred, he was certain.
“Technically, yes… but do we want to actually do that?”
All three of them smiled, something almost feral in the motion. Of course not. They all had the same memories after all, and Bruce had just returned from the past, from exactly where and when Tim had said he was. Despite no one believing him, hence why they were in his boathouse, and not in the apartment or manor.
“Think we can pull it off?” Ellie took a sip of tea, mischief swirling in her eyes.
“Of course we can.” Both Danny and Tim spoke at once, one pulling up a new doc and the other pulling the whiteboard out from under a curtain.

New Twin?
ok so we know Bruce got lost in the time stream right?
And Tim saved him bla bla bla...
Ok so I'm reading a fanfic rn and it's giving me an idea for a dpxdc crossover.
Its 'TWINcognito mode' by nerdpoe
Ok so I'm thinking it's not safe for Danny in his world so clockwork pulls some strings and sets everything up for Danny to be Tim's non identical twin (theyre similar enough to pass) and he just appears in wayne manor right after Bruce gets out of the time stream.
Like I'm talking he has a room that's 'been lived in for years', he has memories of them and growing up with tim, he's acting like nothings new ect.
So he's all like "dad your back!" And they're all looking between tim and his double like "tim??? NOT tim????" And they come to the conclusion that Bruce fucked with the time stream and he spawned in.
They all feel guilty that they 'forgot' him even though they never knew him. Especially Tim, he would feel so bad if there was someone that went through what he did with their parents neglect and they only had each other, but Tim doesn't remember who this is.
He could be fully aware and is pretending so he's safe OR clockwork thought this would be for the best so he altered Danny's memories so he genuinely believes he's Tim's twin.
For the second option I like the ideas that he doesn't remember anything/he doesn't have access to his ghost half (either he has to heal from something his parents did or he can't handle the full power that comes with being ghost king) and he won't unlock his memories/powers till he dies again.
Which if he genuinely believed they were his family, and then they tell him he wasn't real a few days ago, that would probably fuck with his mind.

DcxDp prompt
based on a mix of "TWINcognito mode" on ao3 and the "mad scientist fenton" au and some other clone promt i can't remember the name of (2 for 1 or something)
so essentially ra's makes a clone of tim with his spleen (because he's a creep) and dunked it in the lazarus pits because something, readers choice. But something went wrong, like really wrong and now not only does said clone (now danny) have some eldritch soul
But because of the pits, his memories (both from tim and danny) are so mingled and messy that he can't tell the two sets of memories apart from one another.
So with his mixed up mind danny runs away from ra's and vanishes from the league of assassins radar.
On another note multiple heros/vigilantes have this mad scientist teen running around calling himself fenton
(Danny only has vague memories from both himself and tim as well as a bunch of random information, but he can't tell the memories apart from each other, also I'd like to imagine that because he has such vague memories he ends up creating Android/robot versions of like sam, tucker, jazz and such)
and here are the references for this prompt

TWINcognito mode part 2 (Tim and Danny Pretend to be Twins AU)
Part 1, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, AO3
“And you’re absolutely certain that this is my universe?” Bruce asked again, causing Flash to let out a loud groan as he turned around to pace the BatCave.
“Yes, I’ve checked you over and over again. Did you trigger some sort of event when you went back in time? Yes. Is this your universe? Also yes! Look, whatever changed wasn’t that big of a deal-”
“-I consider my children rather important, Flash.”
Flash froze, a look of horror briefly crossing his face.
“No. No, is one of them no longer-?”
“I didn’t lose any children,” Bruce reassured Flash, “But I appear to have gained one. Red Robin has a…twin. That twin most certainly did not exist when I left.”
Flash frowned, tilting his head.
“Huh. Well, congratulations on the new kid.”
They stared blankly at each other.
“And you’re sure-?”
“Yes!”
~~~~~~
“Ah, so Ti-Da-son, I-uh. How…how’s that case going?”
Tim turned, half out of his Red Robin suit and tired.
“It’s…fine?”
“I see. That’s good. How is your…how are you?”
Tim narrowed his eyes, and even Damian joined in to stare at Bruce, both of their noses wrinkling in confusion.
“Bruce, are you-?”
“Father, are you having a stroke?”
Bruce turned around, all rough edges as he marched to the batcomputer.
“Nevermind. Carry on.”
~~~~~~
“What the fuck are you doing here, Replacement?”
Tim raised an eyebrow and lifted up the ground coffee he was holding.
“Shopping?”
Jason snarled, and some of the other shoppers moved away.
“You know better than to-”
“When did you tell me not to come here?”
Jason froze, shock temporarily wiping emotion from his face.
“When did I-? Ages ago! What, did you forget?”
Tim shook his head slowly.
“No Jason, you told Tim not to come here. When did you ever tell me?”
“What the absolute hell is that supposed to mean?”
Tim sighed, Disappointment etched into his face; the little shit was clearly being condescending on purpose. Jason felt like punching something. Probably the punk in front of him. What was this third person bullshit?
“How many years, and you still can’t tell? I swear, I’m just gonna stop responding when you mess up.”
“And I reiterate; what does that mean?” Jason cried, throwing up his arms.
Tim ignored him and walked to the checkout.
“Don’t you walk away from me! Hey! Pretender! Get back here!”
~~~~~~
Bruce stared at Tim. Daniel. One of them. Only one of them ever showed up for Brunch, and currently Bruce wasn’t sure who’s turn it was. He was also certain that all of his children just automatically assumed it was Tim every time, like Daniel didn’t exist.
He was starting to suspect that whatever he’d done, his family maintained knowledge of how the universe used to be and were almost wholly unaware of Daniel. He’d have to hold a family meeting and explain it to them, but he refused to let Daniel feel like he was worth any less than any of his siblings.
It didn’t help that apparently, Daniel and Tim refused to be seen together. From the files he’d pulled, it was probably a leftover habit from Jack and Janet Drake hiding the twin with the meta powers. Daniel had a listed incident of blasting a hole in the wall when he was six, and from there his parents had elected to avoid potential embarrassment by just…not including him.
And apparently, to Daniel and Tim at least, Bruce had done nothing to dissuade that. He had to change that, but he wasn’t sure how to address it without letting Daniel know that he just…hadn’t existed until Bruce came back.
The twin at the table stole Dick’s bacon and just ate it without a word. From what Bruce could tell from his few interactions with Daniel, the boy loved puns.
So given the silence, he was fairly confident that this one was Tim.
“So, Tim,” he started, interrupting another argument between his children, “You do know that all of my children are welcome here, right?”
The table fell quiet as every single person there turned to stare at him like he was mad.
“...Is this because I broke Damian’s favorite paintbrush? Because I swear I wasn’t trying to establish dominance and kick him out of his own home. Unlike some people.”
“You did what?!”
Bruce leaned forward and buried his head in his hands, letting the noises of the table wash over him.
The family meeting could wait; he’d have to spell it out to Daniel himself.
~~~~~~
Dick knocked on the door to Tim’s penthouse. They hadn’t hung out in awhile, and he still felt bad about the whole…Robin thing.
It hadn’t been fun when it had been taken away from him, and he could have at least been a bit gentler in easing Tim into the loss.
Tim answered the door, bleary eyed and tousled hair a testament to the bed he had just walked away from.
“...Dick?” he asked, voice rough.
“Hey Baby Bird! Mind if I come in?” Dick held up his package; donuts from Tim’s favorite place and coffee from his other favorite place. “I thought maybe we could hang out!”
Tim stared at him, then shrugged and opened the door all the way.
“Sure, let me get him.”
Dick was left standing in the entryway, bewildered, as Tim disappeared down the hallway to his own room.
Dick was still bewildered when Tim walked back out of his room, still in his pajamas, but with a different shirt.
“Coffee?” his little brother asked, reaching out eagerly.
“Uh, sure?”
There was no further movement in the penthouse. Was Tim suffering a mental break?
Dick made a mental note to check in on Tim more often.
~~~~~~
Duke stared at Not-Tim.
Not-Tim stared back.
“Can I help you or…?”
Duke squinted at Not-Tim.
Not-Tim was a bright void, for all that the description negated itself. Lazarus green danced along the edges, but ultimately it was a bright, luminescent void.
“Are you…a meta?” Duke asked, trying to figure it out. Maybe this was a shapeshifter friend of Tim’s?
Not-Tim smiled, an out of place one that didn’t fit on Tim’s face.
“I am, yes.”
“...But?” Duke prompted, sensing that the sentence wasn’t finished.
Not-Tim leaned in close, a mischievous smirk replacing the smile.
“My twin isn’t,” Not-Tim whispered, handing Duke a drivers license for one Daniel Janus Drake-Wayne.
Oh.
Oh!
“Wait, where have you-?” Duke whispered, leaning in closer.
“Ra’s was very interested in Tim 2.0, but I’m not the detective my brother is, so he was actually pretty disappointed. I got the information I needed and left; I really only just got back.”
That made so much more sense! That was why Ra’s was so obsessed!
“Have you told the family you’re back yet?” Duke asked, wondering if everyone was even aware that Daniel was alive.
“We never told them we were twins. It started as a joke, only ever being here one at a time. Now we’re just seeing how long it takes for everyone to realize without outright showing them. You’re the fourth; according to Barbara, that makes you have a passing grade of 80.”
“Can I help?” Duke hissed, glancing over his shoulder to make sure no one was listening in.
Daniel (Danny? That seemed to fit better.) laughed.
~~~~~~
“Well?” Damian asked, glaring at the back of Drake’s head as the fool showed his back to the enemy.
The Imposter didn’t even turn around.
“Well?” Damian repeated, gritting his teeth.
“Well what, Damian?”
“You have yet to call me that degrading name. Have you reconsidered utilizing it? I must know now lest I be constantly waiting for that foul name to leave your-”
“What name, el-witwaat?”
Damian felt himself stiffen. The last time he had heard that name had been from his last nanny, and his mother had made sure that it was the last thing that ever left the woman’s mouth. It was…cute. To hear it and know it referred to him was a stain on his honor.
Damian was not cute. He was a formidable warrior.
He needed to be prepared if Drake was going to utilize psychological warfare and-
“It isn’t my nickname for you, though.” Drake said, typing away at his laptop. Damian fought the urge to obliterate the machine. He was making no sense, and Drake knew it.
“On the plane, you insisted to Thomas that you were the only one to call me that atrocity.”
Instead of acknowledging it, Drake only made an irritated huff and shut the laptop, standing up to leave.
“Yeah, he said that it was his nickname for you. Not me.”
Damian trailed after Drake as his older…predecessor left.
“I do not understand why you refer to yourself in third person, Drake, but it is not becoming of someone from your station.”
The door to the front of the manor was shut in Damian’s face.
Rude.
Confusing.
Drake was up to something, and Damian needed to know what it was.
~~~~~~
Dick watched as Kon came by to pick Tim up, laughing a little as the Super swooped down to yank Tim into the sky.
“Come on, flying buddy, let’s go; we gotta race!”
Huh. Well that was a weird phrase to say. Tim couldn’t fly.
Tim couldn’t fly, right?
Duke shoved past Dick, almost knocking him over, as he rushed towards Kon and Tim.
“Kon, that's Tim! Kon, you have the wrong-that’s Tim! Kon!”
Dick narrowed his eyes, the detective part of his brain that never turned off starting to pick up on the strange inconsistencies from the past month or so.
In the training exercise, he hadn’t seen Tim put the spiders in his bag. Or steal his socks and sleeping bag, but he’d been very careful about making sure the bag never left his sight. So sneaking by him, who had been Batman on multiple occasions, and filling it with spiders? Nearly impossible.
Unless it was a meta.
Tim walking into his room, only to walk back out in a different pajama shirt flashed into his mind.
The Tim that had greeted him at the door had slouched a bit more, his voice had its intonations and mannerisms just a little to the left of the Tim that had come back out of the bedroom.
No. No way.
Dick…had another brother?
~~~~~~
Steph was on a mission. It was important. Life altering.
She needed graham crackers and for some fucking reason, every single grocery store she’d gone to was out.
This. This was her last hope.
Not because it was the last grocery store in the entire city, but because if she didn’t find the stupid graham crackers here she was just going to give up and buy a cheesecake.
She really hoped she wouldn’t have to go that route; homemade was best.
Cass was right there with her, scouring the shelves for just one box of those sweet, crumbly crackers.
But this store was a bust as well-Steph watched in horror as the last box was snatched up by some deranged criminal, an absolute villain oh wait it was Tim.
“Tim!” she cried, jogging forward.
But Tim didn’t turn around?
Wow. Rude.
She’d remember this.
Cass tapped her shoulder and shook her head, laughing quietly.
“Not Tim. Danny!”
Tim stopped and looked around, confused, before his gaze fell on Steph and Cass.
Then he just looked surprised.
“Steph? You never talk to me. What’s up?”
What?
Steph didn’t respond, stuck in her thoughts as she was.
What was happening? Who was Danny? Had she fallen into another universe and just not known? Was Tim’s name Danny in this universe?
Cass stepped forward, amusement visible as she gave Tim-Danny?-a hug.
“Steph wants to make cheesecake, you have the last graham crackers.”
Tim’s lookalike made a surprised sound, before shrugging and handing over the box to Steph.
“I’ll tell my brother you said hi,” Tim-Danny- said, waving before walking away.
Wait.
Wait.
Brother?
Tim had a twin?!
Tim had a twin and he hadn’t told her?! That bastard! This would not stand.
Steph bolted forward and draped herself on Danny’s back, throwing the graham crackers back in his cart.
“Change of plans; I’m going to make cheesecake and we aren’t giving any to Tim. It’s punishment for not telling me about you.”
Danny looked delighted, and Steph preened. Yes, this boy knew when good food was being offered to him. None of that ‘Oh I can’t eat right now Steph I’m about to leave for a mission’ or ‘Are you sure you know how to cook that’ shit.
“Barbara’s going to be there, and Harley and Pam and fuck it we’re going to make it a girls night plus Danny. I cannot believe he didn’t tell me about you; can you imagine how embarrassing it would have been if I’d made that mistake when we were going out? Can you imagine?”
Danny laughed and pushed the cart forward towards the chip aisle.
“Well if we’re having a girls night, what else should we get? I’m feeling green and purple nail polish.”
Oh yes. Yes, this one would do nicely. The Birds of Prey would keep Danny; the Bats could have Tim.
~~~~~~
“Dami!”
Damian turned from his painting, observing as Richard stumbled to a stop in front of him.
“Richard? Is something wrong?” Damian slowly set aside his brushes, subconsciously preparing himself for bad news.
“No, no nothing’s…well. Hey, next time Tim calls you el-witwaat, tell me immediately, okay?”
Damian frowned.
“I fail to see what that has to do with-”
“I don’t think it’s Tim,” Dick interrupted, wild eyed and tense.
Damian slid off of his chair. For how insufferable Timothy was, he was still a part of their family; if someone had taken Tim’s place then they would have to mobilize immediately to rescue him.
“I am prepared to rescue the Imposter-”
“Boys,” Father interrupted from the doorway; Todd was standing behind him, as was Thomas, “Family meeting in the Cave.”
~~~~~~
“So I know it’s a prank, but I’m kind of feeling…”
“...Mildly offended that they can’t tell us apart?”
Tim cracked open an energy drink and chugged it.
Danny sat, content with his Orange Juice.
It had been roughly a month, and Danny was beginning to remember who he was as a person and learn what he liked as a mortal.
Danny liked puns, Tim did not unless it was under very specific circumstances. Danny wasn’t a die-hard coffee fan, Tim most certainly was. Danny liked sleeping; he’d forgotten how fantastic it was. Tim actively avoided it. Where Tim was detective-minded and his smarts focused on crime, Danny was not, and his smarts focused on engineering and space. They were both combat trained, but Danny was more inclined to use it for self defense, as opposed to Tim using it for active offense.
Most importantly though; Tim craved being a vigilante with every fiber of his being. Danny was perfectly happy living his new life as a civilian this time. His obsession, while there, was muted; he knew he could fulfill it by creating protective devices. Which, honestly, given what company his twin brother owned? It was looking like a great career choice.
He was so seriously considering it that Danny was actually looking at taking classes at Gotham University in engineering, but he and Tim had…concerns. About paparazzi, mostly.
Essentially, they were two very different people; but while Danny may have started out as a clone, he and Tim felt that the term ‘Twin’ was actually rather perfect.
It had been unanimously decided to keep the identity that Tim and Barbara had made Danny, and that was exactly when the trouble had started.
Danny and Tim were starting to get annoyed.
Now that the lines between them weren’t so blurred in terms of identity, and they were very aware of who each other was, it was honestly a little offensive that their siblings hadn’t been able to spot who was who. Or at least notice that something was off; they’d given a million clues.
“They’re idiots,” Tim sighed, throwing himself into his chair.
“It was fun at first, and it still is kinda, I just feel like…” Danny trailed off, sighing and burying his woes in his scrambled eggs.
Tim nodded, understanding.
They wanted to continue this venue of entertainment, but maybe with a little different flavor.
“Oh, if you two are bored you don’t have to worry about the prank changing pace,” Barara said from the open laptop, distracted as she worked on something separate, “B has decided that Danny’s existence is new due to him messing with the Time Stream, and that the Bats are the only ones that were unaffected by the knowledge except Tim. He doesn’t want to hurt Danny’s feelings by letting him know that he’s a relatively new existence.”
Oh?
Danny and Tim looked at each other, identical grins beginning to shine through.
It was time to change tactics.
~~~~~~
Jason sat on the hood of the Batmobile, hating that he had been roped into this stupid family meeting.
Dickface was pacing, the baby bat was sulking, Narrows looked nervous, Cass was in Hong Kong, and Babsgirl looked bored from her place on the screen.
“Thank you for coming here,” the Old Man started, pulling up some poor fucks entire documented life on the computer screen, “I will get to the point. I believe I altered the Time Stream when I was lost in it, and there have been a few consequences. I am mainly concerned about this one; do any of you know of Daniel?”
Jason squinted at the screen, trying to see if this was an instance of remembering a face and not a name, and-
-Hold up.
That was Replacement’s face.
“His name is Daniel?” Dickface asked, sounding fucking happy for some reason.
“You guys didn’t know about Danny?” Duke asked, looking confused.
“Wait, none of you remember Danny?” Barbara asked, looking pissed, “He’s literally the only male member of the Birds of Prey. Bruce, what did you do?”
B looked dumbfounded.
“He’s one of your-? There weren't any files about the Birds of Prey.”
“That would be because I wiped them; he just spent two years in deep cover at the League of Assassins; there couldn’t be a trail that would indicate espionage. Which is his speciality. Bruce, do you really remember none of this?”
“This does rather explain a few things.”
Jason felt his jaw drop.
“Oh that fucker!” slipped out of his mouth as he slid off the car and started pacing.
“...Todd?” The little demon brat asked, confused.
“‘You told Tim that, you didn’t tell me’, fuck! He fucking spelled it out for me and I didn’t see it!” Fuck the whole magically appearing twin thing, had it really taken them this long to spot it?!
Wait.
Jason rounded on Duke.
“Do you remember him?!”
Narrows shook his head, holding up his hands.
“He left on that mission before I got here, but yeah I pretty much knew the instant he came back. None of you noticed?” Duke looked alarmed, glancing between them and Barbara.
“Well pretty much every single one of you failed the test we set up for awareness, but now there’s a bigger problem,” Barbara sighed, taking off her glasses so she could massage her temples.
Dick just looked thoughtful.
“The espionage thing is probably why none of us caught him during the prank war in the forest. Training. I meant training.”
B cleared his throat, redirecting attention.
“I have reason to believe that we may be the only ones who do not remember Daniel-”
Duke hissed, wincing.
“Yeah, he really doesn’t like that name. It’s Danny.”
“...Danny. We may be the only ones who do not remember Danny. I suspect that I interfered with the Time Stream, despite my efforts not to, and it resulted in Tim being a twin. Not the worst outcome by far, but the issue is that as far as Danny is concerned, he’s known us for most of his life.”
Jason felt a bit sick.
“And we just…forgot him. From his point of view.” Dick finished, sounding ill as well.
“We cannot let him know that we do not know him,” Damian said, looking surprisingly determined, “We must use our skill sets to learn as much as we can to paint how we treated him in the past, and either emulate it or change it to match our current circumstances.”
The Old Man nodded in agreement, as did Dick. Duke and Barbara just looked done, and Jason…Jason felt like throwing up.
What, it wasn’t enough to forget the kid, now they had to lie to his face and pretend like they knew him?
All fake smiles and hidden glances, just like when he’d calmed down enough to first come back to the Manor without attacking anyone. Faking trust where there was none, pretending to accept him when they knew nothing about him.
Fuck that.
Fuck this.
Jason walked out of the Cave without a word.
~~~~~~
The new plan was simple.
They’d show up together at perfectly normal places and act like nothing was new.

TWINcognito mode Part 6(Tim and Danny Pretend to be Twins AU) (lmfao nah they adopted Danny they ain't pretending anymore)
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, AO3
Alfred looked up from where he was polishing the last segment of the giant penny, just as one of Master Bruce’s civilian cars came to a rather sudden halt. The doors opened to an unholy cacophony of shouting and adolescent rage, and an almost desperate Master Bruce attempting to gain control of the situation.
With a clatter of a dropped school bag, Master Duke stumbled down the stairs, looking as perplexed as Alfred himself was.
Miss Barbara appeared on the screen, looking very much like she either wished to throttle the shouting siblings or was about to retreat to her bed.
Miss Cassandra appeared on the screen as well; the only one of any of them who looked amused. Well bully for her, then. If only they could all be so lucky as to be in a different country at that moment.
“Master Tim,” Alfred started, raising his voice just enough to warrant a pause in the ongoing argument, “Would you be so kind as to tell us why you are dressed like Master Danny?”
That was the wrong question.
That was the entirely wrong question to ask, and Alfred knew the second he saw the expression on Master Damian’s face.
“Timothy thought that running away from his problems instead of facing them was the answer, as usual, and-”
“-I do not run away from my problem you insufferable little-”
“-Opted to trade places with Daniel instead of standing and fighting for him-”
“-So are you saying I’d able to win against Bruce-”
“-Now Todd is on the run with Daniel at his mercies-”
“-It’s fine; Jason seems to like Danny, he’s-”
“-Perhaps we should let Master Bruce speak,” Alfred interrupted, cutting into their particular version of bonding.
Master Bruce looked like he very much did not want to speak.
“...Master Bruce, please enlighten us as to the reason for this meeting.”
Master Bruce avoided Alfreds gaze.
“B tried to kill Danny.”
“I did not!”
“You are overreacting, Timothy. But yes, father did inadvertently attempt to murder the superior twin.”
“I’m sorry,” Master Dick’s voice echoed through the cave, as cold and as terrifying as his eyes, “Bruce did what?”
Oh dear.
~~~~~~
Jason threw his helmet against the wall in rage.
Danny, very helpfully, staggered over to it and brought it back to him, taking care to only scorch it a little bit with his uncontrolled energy arcs. Jason did not take it back.
“Do we feel better now?”
No, no he did not.
“Jason, you gotta take Danny to the Cave; Dick’s on a warpath,” Barbara sighed through his earpiece, “I’ve muted myself on their side but he won’t calm down until he sees Danny. You know Danny will be safe there, and I’ll take over the security systems to guarantee an easy escape if I’m wrong.”
“Jason, why does Tim wear these suits?”
“Jason, please, just-”
“-I feel like my skin is fighting me-”
“-Take Danny to-”
“-Was the sky always pink?”
“-Shut up!” Jason snapped, only to end up with his own helmet braining him.
“You shut up, you…you fruitloop,” Danny hissed, sounding for all the world like he’d just gravely insulted Jason.
That was adorable, but Jason was too pissed to acknowledge that.
He did file it away for use later, though. As blackmail material, obviously.
“Okay, fine. I’ll take the little menace to the Cave, and I want a guaranteed easy escape.”
“Done. Good luck getting him on your bike.”
Danny struck one of the sloppiest fighting poses Jason had ever seen in his life, literally hissing like a cat. Jason heard a click as Barbara disconnected, the coward.
“You can’t or he’ll kill me! And I’ll kick your butt to prove it!”
“How does that make any sense?”
Danny attempted to throw a punch in response, but overbalanced and landed on his face, using his bad hand to attempt to stop himself. Jason watched apathetically as the younger of the twins dragged himself off of the ground and cradled the burned appendage, before making seal-eyes at Jason.
“You did this to yourself,” Jason said flatly.
The eyes started to water.
“But it hurts,” whined Danny.
“I don’t care,” mocked Jason, “Suck it up, pipsqueak, and get on the bike.”
~~~~~~
Duke was not hiding.
He absolutely was fucking not.
He was just…staying out of the line of fire.
Watching as the scariest version of Dick he’d ever seen glared Bruce, Damian, and Tim into silence as the eldest forced them all to wait for Danny to get there.
Duke opened his mouth to ask for maybe some clarifying information, possibly to learn what exactly had happened while he’d been at school, before closing it with a quiet click.
He wasn’t sure that drawing Dick’s attention on him would be a good thing.
Instead, he made himself scarce and waiting for oh thank god he could hear the motorcycle.
Jason came to a screeching halt, and looked just as pissed as Dick, and Danny was…stumbling like he was drunk.
“Dude, are you drunk?” Slipped out of Duke’s mouth before he could stop himself.
Danny immediately course-corrected to beeline towards Duke, which was very unfortunate because that would take him off of the vehicle pad and into the dark, deadly abyss between them.
Jason didn’t even look over as he grabbed Danny by the collar of his very expensive looking jacket and hauled him down the walkway.
“No,” Danny whined, making grabby hands at Duke, “Save me Duke they’re gonna make me suck it up!”
“Suck what up?” Duke asked, stepping out of his not-a-hiding-place and hurrying over.
“My hand,” Danny wailed, waving a bandaged hand in the air as proof.
Jason manhandled Danny to his front so he could shove him at Tim, who caught his twin and glared at the crime lord.
“You couldn’t be a little more gentle?”
“He burned my helmet and then hit me with it, fuck you.”
“As expected, even incapacitated Daniel maintains the ability to attempt to defend himself. Timothy, learn from this.”
Tim attempted to reach out to presumably throttle Damian, but Danny decided to fully lean on his twin and forced Tim to put all of his efforts into keeping an inebriated meta upright.
Duke diverted his eyes from their antics to keep focus on the bigger problem.
Dick.
Dick, who actually looked like he was slowly relaxing as his shoulders fell from their tense position.
Dick, who now looked much more likely to listen to people talk since he’d confirmed that Danny was…not fine, but would be.
“So…can we know what happened now?” Duke asked, really needing to wrap up whatever this was so he could get started on his…homework. Yes. That was what he was going to do.
“I’m a god,” Danny answered, completely serious as he hid his face in his twins chest, “I can see it all so clearly now; everything is connected and I control all the realms and tax laws need constant reformation.”
Duke, as well as almost everyone in the room, elected to ignore this.
Well, he would have, if it hadn’t been for Bruce suddenly looking very, very ill. Duke supposed he would; the rich were afraid of taxes, after all.
“Bruce?” Duke asked cautiously, drawing attention to the man, “Hey, tax reforms aren’t that bad, you don’t have to be scared!”
“Bruce,” Dick ordered, much less cautiously, “Spill.”
~~~~~~
Dick, contrary to what he let his family believe, did not allow himself to be blinded by familial love to what was right in front of him.
He did allow his emotions to get the better of him, he would be the first to admit that. Second, if he couldn’t say it faster than Bruce.
He was quick to anger, tended to catastrophize, and generally did not have a sleep schedule to speak of, which only heightened the emotions he felt on a daily basis.
And he had worked so fucking hard to overcome all of that.
He wasn’t proud of who he had been, but he was working to be better than that. Every day was a chance to be a better person, and he was getting better about the frequency he fucked it up.
When Tim had left on his date and left Dick with Danny, Dick had been able to read the excitement and nervousness in the younger twin like an open book. He’d also taken note that Danny did not seem as able to hide his emotions as Tim, and okay, maybe he’d taken advantage of that.
He would blame the cop in him if he didn’t know for sure it was the Bat.
It wasn’t that Danny wasn’t as smart as Tim, it was just that Danny wasn’t as crime-oriented as Tim. Danny wasn’t constantly on guard or gathering information or reading people’s body language. He didn’t have to.
Danny, Dick discovered within five minutes of Tim leaving, loved engineering and space and hyperfixated on the topics just like Tim hyperfixated on cases.
Honestly, they hadn’t even watched the movie right away; Danny had let slip that he wanted glow-in-the-dark stars and Dick had pulled up all open toy stores on his phone.
Danny, Dick discovered, gave away information he did not mean when he was lecturing about something he was obsessive over.
So Dick had gotten a ladder, let Danny ‘forget’ he could fly so that his little brother could order him around, and set about decorating the ceiling with every single constellation Danny could pull from memory. In between placing the stars, he’d ask small, inconsequential questions. Questions Tim would never answer, but Danny was so distracted and unsuspecting that he answered them right away.
The thing that stuck out to Dick, immediately, was the way Danny worded things.
“Because ever since we’ve been introduced, we’ve literally never hung out,” Danny had said.
“Do you have anything else to say?” Tim had asked.
Danny kept commenting how he’d never known XYZ about Dick, that Dick had never told him about whatever story Dick was regaling him with, informing Dick about whether or not he liked or disliked something, and just…acting like he’d never met Dick before, and was doing everything but outright saying it.
The most damning evidence Dick managed to gather, however, was how Danny would pause before being introduced to a snack. Like he didn’t know if he would like it or not, like it was new to him.
So Dick chose a movie he’d seen a million times before, something he could easily pretend to watch while he compiled what he’d found out in his head.
It was an old movie, a cult classic, and the attention Danny was giving it indicated that he’d never even heard of it before.
So.
Danny was a clone, then.
If he had been an alternate version of Tim, he would have known some things about Dick’s personal tastes, and if he had been Tim’s twin from a different dimension, then at least some of the things they’d talked about would have overlapped.
But it was all new to him.
That left cloning.
Danny looked nothing like Kon, and Dick was certain that he and Superman had successfully shredded Tim’s cloning lab, soTim and Luthor were out.
But Tim had a lot of enemies.
The issue was finding out which one…
Tim’s spleen.
That would have been a good source of DNA material, and only one person had both the remains of Tim’s organ and the money to afford a cloning operation.
Ra’s Al Fucking Ghul.
It wasn’t enough that the freak was chasing his little brother’s skirts, he’d resorted to creating his own version of Tim to play with.
And Tim had gotten him away, without reaching out to the family for help. Again.
It would match Danny’s cover story about being deep cover, but it snagged on one thing.
Why hadn’t Tim taken Danny out with him when he’d infiltrated the League to get Bruce back?
So Danny had been in the League, and if he was a clone then that would explain…well, everything.
Dick watched Danny through the corner of his eye, noticing for the first time what his small fidgets were for.
Lightly rubbing fingers on rough surfaces, check. Reaching up to touch a specific area of his face, check. The small undercurrent of fear that would rise when the movie slowed, check. Deep, controlled breaths when the movie touched on certain subject, check. Slowly but surely burrowing his way into his oversized hoodie until the only skin visible was his face, check.
All pointed towards grounding himself, all pointed towards previous trauma.
Dick decided to ask for confirmation, without asking for confirmation.
“Man, I forgot how cheesy this movie could be,” he chuckled, leaning further into the couch, “Real assassins don’t move like that.”
Danny snorted, nodding in agreement.
“Way too many useless moves; they’d get seriously punished for the excess time it took.”
Yup.
Yup yup yup.
That was the League speaking.
And from how Danny had tensed his shoulders, how that flash of fear had briefly shown in his eyes, that was also experience speaking.
Dick had thought he’d protected Tim from Ra’s, but apparently Ra’s had found a workaround.
Dick wasn’t worried about brainwashing; that would have been the first thing Tim dealt with.
Tim had taken this clone, cleaned him up, gotten him on his feet, and declared him his twin, and okay; that was their choice, and if that was what they wanted their identities to be, then that was what they were. They wanted to play a prank on the family? Fine, Dick didn’t have any issue with it.
He was thrilled to have another brother, if he was honest. Especially one insistent on being a civilian; that was one less sibling he had to worry about on his patrols.
What he did have an issue with, however, was that Ra’s had managed to traumatize one of his little brothers, and had done it with Dick none the wiser.
By the time the movie had ended, Dick had worked himself up too much about it, and could feel the explosive outburst teasing the edge of his mind.
So he’d all but run from the penthouse, and crime in Gotham that night feared Nightwing far more than it did Batman.
Presently, he could feel the explosion that had been building ease back as he watched Danny make a nuisance of himself to his twin. He watched them for another moment, before turning his attention to Bruce.
Bruce, who looked like he knew something, but clearly had made a move without knowing everything.
All this talk about Bruce trying to kill Danny was making Dick consider putting that same fear he’d put into the criminal underbelly of Gotham that night into his father.
“Bruce,” he ordered, fighting to keep his voice level, “Spill.”
~~~~~~
Damian used Timothy as a distraction, grabbing Daniel’s hand and ensuring that its bandage was not removed or knocked loose. It was not going well; the hand was occasionally sparking and Daniel kept trying to pull it away.
Daniel only stopped trying to squirm away when he realized it was Damian who was touching him, whereupon he took it upon himself to transfer his weight from Timothy to Damian with a cry of “El-witwaat!”.
Damian used the momentum to make Daniel sit, allowing for the undamaged hand to wrap around him in exchange for free access to the injured hand.
He finally managed to re-tighten the slightly-burned bandage in time to listen to Father’s lackluster explanation.
“I was under the wrongful impression that Danny was from another dimension, and wanted to send him back so that his version of Bruce would not worry,” he started, laying out the most relevant facts and keeping his hands at his sides and his stance non-threatening, “I was unaware I was implying that I would send him to his death; I will no longer be pursuing that course of action.”
There was an unimpressed silence from Richard, before he spoke but a single word.
“Clone.”
Damian heard Father let out a soft exclamation, but tuned him out to look down at the twin plastered to his front.
Damian went over their past interactions, the way that Daniel had worded things, how Daniel interacted with the world; and Damian was surprised that Daniel had gone out of his way to never once lie to Damian, personally. Certainly, he’d lied to the others to keep the charade going, but everything with Damian had been worded so carefully that it had never strayed out of the realm of truth.
Damian did not feel betrayed by this.
He felt relieved.
He did not have to walk on eggshells, wondering if his current actions would stay on track for past actions. He no longer felt that he had to outdo a past version of himself that he could not recall.
Damian would begrudgingly grant that Timothy’s idea was an excellent training exercise in jumping to wrong conclusions, or accepting the facts presented before him without question.
The youngest Wayne turned to glare at Timothy even as the older twin-progenitor? Twin. Damian could see them as nothing else-attempted to console Daniel.
“Do you intend to throw him away, now that you’ve utilized him as a tool for your test?”
Timothy had always been against Damian, and Damian had always been against Timothy. They had a history of fighting each other, and were more likely to draw blood than to agree on something.
But Damian had never seen the look of hatred on Timothy’s face that his brother directed at him after he asked that question.
Good.
“He’s my twin, I don’t care where he came from-”
“-Good, then we actually agree on something for once,” Damian interrupted, not wishing to hear whatever monologue the buffoon was about to prattle on about.
Daniel was his brother, and the only brother he had a normal relationship with.
Luck was with Timothy, as Damian had been fully prepared to fight to keep it that way, and thought that Timothy could stand to gain a few more holes in his body.
~~~~~~
Bruce took in the scene in front of him.
Danny was coddling Damian, who was mother-henning over Danny in his own way. Tim hovered over them both, unsure of how to handle himself since his twin had attached himself to their youngest.
Jason had turned on his heel and marched towards the stairs, presumably to raid the kitchen, Dick had collapsed into a chair and was taking deep, meditative breaths, and Duke looked like he was having fourteen epiphanies at the same time.
Alfred stood with perfect poise and raised an eyebrow at Bruce.
“I’m so sorry sir; given that you had not informed me of your ongoing theories as to Master Danny’s existence, I assumed that you knew.”
It was blindingly clear that Alfred knew that Bruce had not known, and that not telling him was payback for Bruce not including Alfred in his research.
Barbara had chewed them out for lack of communication, and she had been right. If they had just talked to each other, then the massive misunderstanding he’d had wouldn’t have happened.
Fine.
“I also have to report that according to Constantine, he’s acting as the eyes for a god of some sort in this dimension.”
“Yeah, that checks,” Tim piped up, obviously distracted.
Dick stopped his meditative breathing.
Bruce turned slowly to face Tim.
“What,” Duke said flatly from behind him.
Tim looked a bit cornered.
Luckily, Danny had zero self-control.
“Beelzebub stole me from my Lair and put me in a mortal body and now I’m alive again and sometime’s people want to talk to me so Tim put a tracker in my leg.”
Bruce kept his gaze on Tim.
Tim kept his gaze on Danny.
“Tim,” said Bruce.
“Bruce,” answered Tim.
“Isn’t Beelzebub a demon?” Asked Duke.
“Beelzebub is a bitch,” clarified Danny.
“Language!”
“Sorry, Alfred,” Danny moaned, before whispering to Damian, “But he is, though.”
“Why does he need a tracker, Tim?” Dick cut in, looking exactly how Bruce felt.
“He may have been a big name in the afterlife, and people can sometimes summon him and he’ll just…poof,” Tim mumbled, miming an explosion with his hands, “So the tracker alerts me if he just randomly jumps locations. I can set it to alert on your phones too, if you give me fifteen minutes.”
Bruce frowned.
The tracker was a good idea then; they’d be able to find Danny if he was summoned and retrieve him back home safely.
Dick looked rather like he’d swallowed a lemon.
“So you just…violated his autonomy?”
“No, he actually agreed to the tracker.”
“Cultists are scary and I like being alive.”
Damian nodded solemnly, fully agreeing with Danny’s decision.
Bruce sighed, electing to ruffle Danny’s hair as he walked past him to the BatComputer.
He had a PR shitshow to navigate, and Danny needed to sleep off the morphine before he made Duke’s head explode.
“So one of my brothers is a prophet?!”
Too late, it seemed. Duke was falling down the conspiracy rabbit hole that Tim’s boyfriend loved to swim in.
TWINcognito mode Part 3(Tim and Danny Pretend to be Twins AU) (But are they still pretending at this point lmfao)
Part 1, Part 2, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, AO3
“Ah, I should let you know in case it comes back to bite me in the ass; the clone couldn’t grow a soul, so Ra’s made a deal with a demon and essentially kidnapped me from the afterlife to put in this body.”
Tim paused, cereal halfway to his mouth, and stared.
“Oh. Is…is there a chance of you leaving or being kicked out of your body or something?” His voice only shook a little, betraying how that was a possibility he did not want to consider.
Danny shook his head, shoveling the same cereal brand in his mouth.
“Nah, the body is bonded with my soul at this point; it is actually my body now,” Danny explained, using his spoon as a pointer, “But I had a few titles in the afterlife, so someone may try to summon me. If I randomly disappear in an eery, unexplainable fog, that’s why. I’ll find my way back though.”
Tim’s hand finished its journey and he took his time chewing the cereal.
“So we need a tracker, is what I’m hearing.”
“Probably, yeah.”
~~~~~~
John Constantine was in Gotham.
Bruce hated that sentence in its entirety.
Unfortunately, he needed Constantine’s input on his most recent…villain. He loathed to call Condiment Man a villain, but the idiot had managed to accidentally curse himself, and now everything his condiments touched was aging at a rapid rate.
It was a fairly standard meeting, all told, when Tim-no; Tim knew to be in the BatCave in uniform when they had company, and Bruce was almost 95% certain that Danny had never once joined him on patrol-Danny walked down the stairs.
John turned to look and Bruce, without thinking, lunged forward and slapped a hand over his eyes.
“Masks!” Bruce hissed, nodding towards where they kept the spares. Danny ignored him though, stopping at the bottom of the stair to gawk at Constantine.
“What the fresh hell am I looking at?” Danny asked, horror and disgust on his face as he leaned away.
“Wow. Nice to meet you too, mate.”
“Don’t talk to me.”
“Don’t insult my lovely little face.”
“Seriously, you’re disgusting. How do you live like this?”
“D-Janus!” Bruce cut in, catching Danny’s attention. Janus was a good middle ground; Danny would absolutely respond to it, and as the name of a god it was strange enough to be a codename. “Is this important?”
Danny slowly held out the phone in his hand, eyes never leaving Constantine.
“Red Robin said you weren’t answering your phone, he needs an answer now or he’s storming the human trafficking gang without backup.”
Bruce would have loved to massage the growing migraine away, but his hands were occupied forcing Constantine to stay in place and covering his eyes.
“Okay, I’ll look over his messages. Tell him not to move forward without confirmation. If you’re not going to cover your face, you have to leave. We have company, you know the rules.”
Danny wrinkled his nose and turned around.
“As long as I don’t have to be in the same room as the person who thought it was a good idea to essentially scalp himself and bleed all over the place.”
“Oh love, I’m sure that no matter how ugly I look I’m bloody roses compared to you.”
“I said don’t talk to me!” Danny shouted, disappearing from view as he left.
“You have lovely children, Batman.” Constantine drawled.
Bruce walked away from the magic-user to address the messages that Tim had apparently been sending him, quickly arranging for Red Hood to assist at the last second.
“My apologies; one of my children is…not into vigilante-ism. He can forget the rules.” Bruce bit out, switching back to the Condiment Man case.
Constantine hummed, still looking up the stairs.
“So, how’d your kid get the ability to see souls?”
“Classified.”
Bruce had no idea. He wasn’t about to let Constantine know that, though.
~~~~~~
Alfred was not a fool.
Something was up, and it had to do with Master Tim.
It had been a month, and he was running out of patience waiting for Tim to tell him what was wrong. It had gotten to coffee cake levels of desperation; as in Alfred was baking a coffee cake to bribe Master Tim into telling someone, anyone if he wasn’t comfortable with Alfred, what was going on.
“Hey Alfred. Oh, cake!” Master Tim said behind him, reaching out to snag some of the batter.
Alfred deftly turned the spare wooden spoon on him for his efforts.
“Master T-!”
“Hey Danny, what’s-oh, cake!” Master Tim’s voice said from his left.
Alfred paused.
Alfred took a deep breath.
Alfred looked behind him, and then to his left.
They were nearly identical. Their hair was styled a bit different, one was wilder than the other, and Master…Danny slouched a bit more, but ultimately if one did not know that there were two of them, they could switch and no one would be the wiser.
…No one had been the wiser.
Alfred thought back to the research he’d seen Master Bruce had been doing so desperately in the BatCave. He’d always hid the files before Alfred could read them, but he had caught the vigilante muttering about Time Streams and irreversible changes.
Alfred was almost completely certain that prior to Master Bruce coming back, Master Tim had never had a twin.
From said twins point of view, things would be per usual. It would be rather rude to admit that he didn’t remember the lad at all. But what could he do? He genuinely did not.
He would have to have a little talk with Master Bruce regarding updating him when there were such additions to the family.
“...Unfortunately, Master Danny, I made this cake with Master Tim in mind. I was unaware of your own preferences; If you have any, however, I would be glad to hear them.”
Master Danny smiled brightly, and-yes; there was another difference between the two of them. Master Danny was a bit freer with his emotions than Master Tim. It would be best to catalog them now, to prevent something like mistaking one for the other.
“I’m actually a big fudge fan,” the family’s newest member admitted, trying to sneak another taste of cake batter.
Alfred took the wooden spoon to the offending hand again.
New or not, he was no exception to the rules.
It was better to rip the bandaid off, so to speak, rather than say or do something offensive that he did not remember from Master Danny’s past.
“Now, I understand that you are Master Tim’s twin? I fear I cannot recall you, my sincerest apologies. Might I ask that you inform me of any food allergies and general likes and dislikes?”
“Oh, you wouldn’t. Remember me, that is. I’m a clone, but we decided to be twins.”
Alfred paused in his stirring.
Then he smiled; he knew where this was going. He’d known Master Tim long enough to know of the lad’s wicked streak.
“I take it this is a secret, then?”
“Told you he was the best,” Master Tim intoned, licking espresso powder off of his finger. The little devil had used his newfound twin as a distraction!
Master Danny laughed, causing Alfred to look over just in time to see him licking a piece of batter off of his finger.
The scallywags.
~~~~~~
The kid in front of him was oblivious to anyone watching him. He had opted for sitting on a bench at the local park, facing the seriously polluted pond. He had a capri sun juice pack in one hand and his phone in the other, and the holds for the leashes attached to the Hyenas lounging on him were wrapped around his ankle.
Oh yeah.
This wasn’t Timberly.
This was all Dann..er…ino?
Huh.
He’d have to work on that.
Well, that was why he wasn’t in uniform or wearing a mask; he was here to explain why he hadn’t been shitting on the Imposter as much as he had been the Replacement.
“Hey,” Jason said, dropping down from the tree and standing directly behind the Imposter’s Imposter.
“Fuck!” Said the Imposter, dropping both his capri sun and phone.
“I just need to clear some things,” Jason drawled, walking around to Danny’s front and then standing there awkwardly.
He’d thought about what he was going to say, he swore he had, but it was just…shitty. How the fuck did he explain that he’d forgotten a person’s entire existence?
Danny just stared at him, ignoring the hyenas licking his face.
“Tim’s fucking annoying,” damn, he was starting off strong with this, apparently. Danny looked largely unimpressed. “No, I mean. He’s a know it all, thinks that refusing self-care is cool, and is just so painfully awkward it makes me want to carve out my eyeballs. So. That’s why I give him shit.”
“And you also slit his throat,” Danny added helpfully.
Jason scowled.
“What, like I’m the only one who’s slit a family member's throat? He isn’t special.”
Danny opened and closed his mouth, before finally just turning his face into the fur of one of the hyenas and letting out a muffled scream.
“Anyways-”
“No, go back. Who else got their throat slit?”
Jason sighed and tugged down his shirt collar, revealing his own scar.
“The Old Man gave it to me, happy?”
Danny did not look happy. Danny looked the opposite of happy.
Danny’s eyes had started glowing a lazarus green.
“Was this deliberate?”
Well shit. There was a difference right there; Tim could sound for all the world like he was being threatening, but Danny could accomplish sounding outright terrifying.
“No; he was aiming to clip me and I managed to get shoved into it.”
The lazarus green faded, leaving a yet again unimpressed teenager.
“Oh, so it’s not similar at all. You were just an idiot.”
Oh look, more lazarus green, but this time from Jason!
“Okay, so we have our issues. The point; is I don’t remember my issues with you.”
“Wait, what?”
The green receded and Jason shoved his hands into his pockets, looking anywhere but Danny.
“I…don’t remember you. At all. I don’t know if I treated you with the same level of contempt, or if we were on good terms. I don’t know. So. We’re gonna have to start fresh, and I’m gonna have to learn who you are now as opposed to who your records say you were.” Every word felt like it was being pulled through his teeth.
He didn’t want to see the kid’s face. He didn’t want to know what someone looked like when they were told that their family didn’t fucking know who they were.
“Hold that thought, I have to tell them you were the first. Tim thought you wouldn’t be, but I told him that assholes are just the right amount of brutally honest the world needs.”
What?
“What the fuck did you just say?”
Danny finished typing on the phone and looked back at Jason.
“Naturally, you wouldn’t remember me. I’m a clone, I didn’t exist until like three months ago, and Tim and I decided to proceed as twins. We were just messing with everyone and we were about to call it, but Barbara’s price for helping us with the paper trail was forcing the Bat’s to admit they don’t know something.” Danny shrugged, with a ‘what can ya do’ air about him.
Jason felt his mouth opening and closing.
“Oh.”
Danny nodded in agreement.
“Yeah, oh. I still fully intend to cause you grief.”
Fucker.
“No plans to enact vengeance on Timberly’s behalf for said throat slitting thing?”
Danny shook his head, leaning back.
“That’s Tim’s revenge, and he’ll get to that, trust me. That’s already in motion. I’m just here to fuck with you.”
He was going to fit right in; he was just as insufferable as Tim.
“Fine. I guess we’ll get to know each other through me beating the shit out of you, just like I kicked the crap out of your twin.”
The little shit snickered at him. Snickered!
“Good luck. Hey, Dick! Jason broke my phone!”
Jason spun around, arms up in preparation to protect his face from another punch.
There was no one there.
When he turned around, there was no one on the bench either. When he looked around, he saw Danny wave at him as he walked through the fence and took the hyenas with him.
Jason swore.
Density shifting. Of course.
“So that’s how you fucking moved me around the forest.”
Yeah, Jason wasn't saying shit to the Old Man.
He would just sit back and enjoy the show.
~~~~~~
Dick wasn’t sure how to make up for forgetting a person's entire existence. Was it forgetting if that person had previously not existed?
From Danny’s perspective it would be forgetting, so Dick would go with that.
He had come prepared; since he didn’t know what Danny liked, he had bought three pizzas with various weird toppings and one with just pepperoni, had grocery bags full of snack foods, had another grocery bag with various energy drinks, and was full of excitement at getting to know the kid.
But when he arrived at the door to the penthouse, it was already open. In fact, it was held in place by what appeared to be Tim’s briefcase from where it was haphazardly thrown. The smoke alarms were going off inside, and Dick rushed in to see what was going on.
One of the twins was in a large, oversized NASA hoodie and was standing on top of the counter, desperately swinging a towel at the angry, screaming smoke detector. The other one was in an Armani business suit and shoving a flaming pan into the sink in an attempt to drown it in water. The stove bore a few scorch marks, but was otherwise fine.
“How do you not know how to cook fish?!”
“I’ve never done it before and then I don’t know, it started smoking and I freaked out!”
“So you turned up the heat?!”
“I turned the dial the wrong way is what I did, it was an accident!”
“...I can’t leave you unsupervised in the kitchen. I can’t leave you-shit I have a date with Bernard in like an hour…listen, if I tell you to just order takeout, whatever you want and however much you want using my card, will you stay out of the kitchen?”
Danny, because that was who hoodie-twin had to be, stuttered in indignation, and Dick decided to make his presence known.
He cleared his throat and stepped forward, holding up his many treats.
The boys stared at him like he was an alien.
“I may have a solution to this,” Dick started, walking forward to rest his burdens at Danny’s feet on the counter, “It’s called ‘I haven’t hung out with Danny in a really long time, and maybe we should do that’.”
Tim sighed, leaning against the counter.
“Can you keep him out of the kitchen?”
“I am not that bad.”
“This is the fourth time this week you set off the fire alarms, and I’m ready to pay Jason cold hard cash to force you to learn how to fend for yourself.”
Dick frowned, glancing between the two of them.
“Can’t you teach him? From what I remember you’re actually a pretty phenomenal cook.”
Danny jumped off the counter, lightly floating to the ground as he shrugged.
“Tim’s also a vigilante on top of being the CEO of one of the world's biggest tech companies; which means he’s got no time.”
Tim, on the other hand, made a face and shook his head.
“I don’t normally cook, like Danny said; no time. I wasn’t joking about Jason, by the way.”
Danny just made a very big put-upon sigh and meandered around Dick and to the pizza.
“So what’s the plan tonight, Dick?”
“Well, I-”
“Because ever since we’ve been introduced, we’ve literally never hung out.”
What?
What?
What had past version of him from Danny’s memories been doing?
Fine. His past self was an asshole and it was his loss, it just meant that Dick could be upfront and ask what Danny liked without being suspicious.
“That was stupid. I was stupid. Let’s hang out.” The sentence was disjointed with how much rage Dick was directing at his past self, and the knowledge that he couldn't actually do anything about it.
Danny and Tim traded looks, communicating between themselves in a way that Dick couldn’t read.
“Do you have anything else to say?” Tim asked, his face cleanly wiped of any expression.
Dick frowned, shaking his head. He didn’t care that Danny had apparently been previously ostracized, he didn’t care that he couldn’t remember it; he was going to fix it.
Tim slapped a hand on Danny’s shoulder, squeezing it briefly before walking towards his room.
Danny grinned.
It was a feral thing, and some part of Dick was a little afraid.
“If that’s all you have to say then, I think it’s time to get started.”
~~~~~~
Damian found himself in a conundrum.
He had been carefully observing Timothy and Daniel, noting how they behaved and their differences, and was almost certain that he could easily tell them apart.
Honestly, they were so obviously different that he was ashamed to admit he had ever considered one to be the other.
Timothy would never tuck him in, and during that training exercise months ago he was certain it had been Daniel tucking him in. Timothy would never resort to a childish nickname to rile Damian’s ire, but Daniel had no such qualms. Timothy would never resort to puns in front of Damian, but Daniel used them all the time.
But most damning of all?
Daniel would have a cup of coffee, but he gravitated more towards juice. Daniel refused to help with any cases, and would cite that his brain wasn’t in the Detective Mindset. Daniel leaned more towards vegetarianism with occasional meat products, but only sometimes.
They were two completely different people, and Damian had stained his honor as his Father’s blood son by not recognizing that immediately.
Currently, Daniel was sitting across from him in the Manor Library, swiping through something on the tablet in his lap. There was a glass of apple juice next to him, a plate of fudge on the side table, and…yes, Damian could see it now.
Or rather, not see it.
The neckline of Daniel’s hoodie was pulled down, and it revealed a neck free of scars.
How had he ever mistaken one buffoon for the other?
His mannerisms towards Damian tended to be on the more friendly side compared to his twin. Damian took this to mean that the one he had stabbed had, in fact, been Timothy, not Daniel.
Their previous relationship appeared to lean more towards typical sibling antagonism, if the few moments of comfort Daniel offered in the shadows were any indication.
It was this realization that made Damian pause.
Daniel did not seem to seek vengeance for Timothy, and while Damian could attribute that to cowardice, he knew without doubt that it was because he fully trusted his twin to enact any justice that Timothy felt needed to be served.
Which meant that his relationship with Daniel was…surprisingly free of bloodshed.
Nor did Daniel put him on a pedestal, excusing his actions and coddling him.
To Daniel, Damian was just…Damian. El-witwaat. His little brother, to whom he had a duty to annoy.
His plan to include Daniel by convincing him that they never forgot him was all well and good in theory, but Damian did not know how to interact with a sibling that did not hold a grudge against him or only see what they thought he could be, rather than what he was.
“Something wrong, el-witwaat?” Daniel asked, not looking away from his tablet. The name did not bring about the rage that Damian was expecting; just the same emotions that flashed through him when Richard called him ‘Dami’.
Yes, if it had been Timothy that small degree of warmth would not have been present. Grudging respect, maybe, but not any form of warmth. The warmth in the tone, Damian thought, made the difference between accepting the absurd nickname and stabbing Daniel in the eye.
“I find myself wondering what hero name you will choose, now that you have returned from your mission,” Damian replied rigidly, wondering if this would be yet another contender for Father’s mantle.
Daniel just let out a short bark of laughter before presumably choking on his own spit.
“No, no no no, no more vigilante-ism for me,” Daniel answered after he had managed to calm down, “I’m done with it unless it’s a world-ending threat and all hands are needed.”
Damian was confused.
“But you have powers. Generally, metas with powers such as yours find themselves taking up a moniker and-”
“-But statistically speaking, how many metas exist that you’ve never heard of?” Daniel interrupted, going back to his reclined position sideways on his chair.
Damian did not know.
“Listen, being in the League of Assassins, even just to get information, was…well. You and Jason would know better than anyone in this family. And Tim, but he’s not ready to talk about that yet. It…” Daniel trailed off, and Damian was suddenly very aware that he was probably going to hear something that was not in the mission report.
“I…did not get all the information I was supposed to. I got caught.”
“And you’re still alive?” Damian hissed, finding himself leaning forward without any intention to do so.
“I’m my brother's identical twin, Damian. I’m not the detective he is, I’m not even the same person he is, but Ra’s didn’t see it like that. He just saw Tim 2.0.” Daniel shifted, presumably to get more comfortable.
Damian read between the lines.
His grandfather had captured and more than likely attempted to brainwash Daniel.
“Your first interaction with us after getting back was at the brunch,” Damian speculated, ignoring Daniel’s surprised look, “But you came back to Gotham before that, did you not?”
Daniel smiled at him. Another difference, Timothy would never do such a thing, but it was similar to his twin in how tired of a smile it was.
“Tim had to set my head straight for a bit before I could come see you all, yeah. I’m seeing a therapist, don’t worry; we’re making sure to do everything possible to make sure I don’t relapse.”
Damian nodded.
Looked down at the book in his lap.
Then nodded again.
Unlike Timothy, Daniel appeared to take his personal mental wellbeing seriously. Obviously he would take the steps required to ensure he could recover.
From what Damian had managed to gather, Daniel was clearly the superior twin, after all.
Daniel heaved out a massive sigh and floated up to a standing position, directly in front of Damian.
“Come on, let’s go look at BatCow; it’s around time to feed her anyways,” Daniel stated, motioning towards the clock, “I’ll muck out the stable if you do the feeding her part?”
Yes; Daniel was the superior twin.
So why did he look guilty?
~~~~~~
Bruce paused at the threshold to Tim’s old room. Well. Tim and Daniel’s old room. And what had past him been thinking, to force them to share a room when he had so many open?
“-I don’t know, Tim, I just feel guilty about lying.”
Lying? What was Danny lying about?
“Danny, please tell me where what you told the little demon was a lie.”
“I…the getting caught part?”
“Oh, so you were there of your own volition?”
“No! You know I wasn’t-”
“And then you chose to get brainwashed into being a slave?”
“Tim you’re being deliberately obtuse-”
“They’re yes or no questions, Danny. It’s your trauma, how you choose to share it is your business.”
The room behind the door fell quiet, and unfortunately gave Bruce time to think.
Danny had been brainwashed?
He needed to look at the facts.
He still hadn’t been added to the Bird of Prey roster, despite what Barbara had claimed. There were many reasons for that happening, but the biggest one would be if he was either too injured to go in the field or retiring.
Danny had been on a deep cover mission in the League of Assassins, the mission report from which was surprisingly sparse and jumpy. As if whoever was writing it was trying to remember something they’d been forced to forget. The League was run by Ra’s, who had an unhealthy fixation on Tim.
Danny was Tim’s identical twin, for all that they were very different.
The word ‘slave’ bounced around his head and echoed in his ears; it was not a title he wanted any of his children to have, remembered or not.
It was easy to figure out from there, and Bruce was rather overcome by the sudden need to see both Tim and Danny.
The scene awaiting him in their bedroom was…sweet.
Danny was lying sideways on the bed, his head resting on Tim’s leg as he scrolled his tablet, and Tim was leaning against the headboard, presumably working on a casefile on his laptop. They both turned their heads to stare at Bruce when he walked in, looking rather like owls.
‘Slave’ slowly faded from his ears, but stayed in the back of his mind.
He’d deal with Ra’s when the time came.
But at present, both of his sons were safe.
“Danny, Tim. I was just…checking in. Is everything alright?” Curse his inability to make meaningful conversation when it wasn’t a life or death situation.
They glanced at each other and shrugged.
Then Danny hauled himself out of the bed and walked over to Bruce.
Bruce tried not to let too much excitement show on his face.
“Actually B, I was wondering if I could have some input on choosing a major?”
Ah, so Danny really was retiring.
Thank god, at least one of his kids would be out of the direct line of fire.
“Sure Danny,” Bruce agreed, moving out of the way so they could go to his office, “Whatever you need. Like your own room, maybe.”
Danny paused, halfway out the door, and slowly turned to look at Bruce like he’d grown a second head.
“Bruce…this is my room. Tim moved out, remember?”
Behind them, he heard Tim choke on something.
Bruce couldn’t bring himself to check on the twin behind him, however, due to the intense mortification he was feeling.
Danny wasn’t emancipated?
Danny was still legally a dependent in the eyes of the law?!
Had Bruce kicked him out of his own house?!
Bruce leaned against the doorframe, feeling rather faint, and re-evaluated his life choices while simultaneously cursing his past version of himself.
“Uh, so…maybe we should wait on the college thing until you’ve slept, huh?”
Tim was wheezing behind him.
Bruce deserved that laughter. He deserved a punch to the face, honestly.
He’d kicked a minor out of his home, he was no better than-
“B?”
“No. No, your education is important to me.” Bruce ground out, draping a heavy arm around Danny’s shoulders and steering him to his office.
He would make this right.
He had to make this right.
~~~~~~
Some unlucky fucker was knocking on Jason’s door at ass-o-clock in the morning, and they were gonna pay.
He hadn’t bought out the entire building just to be woken up by fucking salespeople, of all things.
Gun in hand and green in his eyes, Jason tore open the front door and-that was Danny. Tim’s twin, for all that Jason could not see him as anything else.
He was standing on Jason’s doorstep, a large hoodie draped over his skinny-ass frame, and looking up at him expectantly.
And Jason was standing in his doorway in his underwear like a moron.
“Uh,” Jason started, unsure of what to make of the situation.
Danny handed over an envelope full of what looked like money.
“Tim wants to pay you fifty thousand per lesson to teach me how to cook.”
…Well. Shit.
He still wasn’t sure where he stood with the little test tube twin, but money was money, and it wasn’t like teaching someone how to do something as simple as cook was hard.
Fifteen minutes into his first lesson and Jason retracted that statement.
Fifty thousand was not enough.
His ruined Hexclad pans sat smoking in the sink as a testament to Danny fucking Drake-Wayne’s failures.
The reason for his ruined kitchenware was sitting on the kitchen floor, looking stunned and staring at the probably third-degree burn he’d definitely have to go to the hospital for.
He was upping his price, and Tim was buying him new pans.

TWINcognito mode Part 4 (Tim and Danny Pretend to be Twins AU) (is it still pretending if they genuinely consider each other as twins?)
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 5, Part 6, AO3
Danny had a bandage on his hand.
Tim stared at it, then his twin, then the hospital room around them, and finally at Jason.
“Jason what the fuck,” he breathed quietly, gesturing helplessly at the hospital patient on the bed.
“No, you’re what the fuck,” Jason hissed, shoving a finger in Tim’s chest, “You did this on purpose, didn’t you? Well fuck you Replacement, I know where you keep your precious BatMobile and I’m not afraid to torch it.”
How the hell did Jason know where the secret BatMobile was?
Wait, not important.
“Danny, you good?” Tim asked, pushing Jason’s hand away and moving towards his probably slightly high twin, “Did he cut off any fingers?” Did Tim have to cut off any of Jason’s in return?
Because he’d do it. He’d do it in a fucking heartbeat.
Jason could stand to lose a few fingers.
Danny’s too-wide eyes gazed into his, and then the little shit started giggling nonstop.
“Oh yeah, they gave him morphine. Did it even though I told them that giving a meta morphine is a bad idea, but I think they thought he was you, so. They learned the hard way.”
There was energy dancing in arcs around Danny’s fingertips, and Tim was fairly certain he knew that the fake incident of blasting a hole in the wall had just become a real one.
“Tim?” Danny asked, reaching out and burning the lapel he’d managed to grab with the energy running unchecked through his hands.
Tim was so suing the hospital for this.
“Yes, Danny?” He sighed, delicately removing the sparking appendage from his clothes.
“Tim, I think I broke a wall.”
“That’s fine, they deserved it for not listening to your medical proxy.”
Tim heard Jason distantly give a flat “What”.
It was fine, a few seconds of typing and it’d look like Jason had always been a listed emergency contact and medical proxy. He could figure out how to explain that to Bruce later.
He’d also need one of Jason’s aliases.
“Everything is moving, and the ceiling is melting.”
Tim frowned. Usually when he saw shit like that it meant-
-Danny abruptly leaned forward and emptied his stomach on Tim’s shoes.
Tim squeezed his eyes shut and tried to block out the sound of Jason’s hysterical laughter.
He could also hear a few shutter clicks, god damn it, one of the vultures had trailed in after him.
"Jason, two mill to play bodyguard and handle the vulture behind me."
The laughter stopped abruptly, and Jason went after the paparazzi with far too much enthusiasm.
Tim listened to the distant sound of a bone breaking and agonized screams as he reached forward and rubbed Danny's back.
Danny whined, leaning into his stomach.
"Don't worry; I've got everything handled," Tim was already texting his team of lawyers in one group chat and the Wayne Industries PR team in another.
He'd take care of it; taking care of family was what he did best.
~~~~~~
The phone rang exactly twice before it was picked up.
“Bruce Wayne speaking,” Bruce Wayne answered, not really paying attention to his work phone as he focused on the blueprints to Black Masks newest HQ in front of him.
“Mr. Wayne, we understand that you have a good working relationship with us at the Daily Planet, for all that we’re from your sister city,” a nervous voice sounded on the other side, and Bruce was suddenly paying attention, “And we were wondering if you would be willing to have an interview concerning Tim Drake-Wayne’s hidden twin? The public has many questions, and you know that we’ll treat the story with the respect it des-”
“Danny doesn’t like reporters,” Bruce lied through his teeth; he had no idea what Danny did or did not like, and he would address the lack of press coverage later once he found out what was going on, “How did this get out?”
“Ah, well there may have been a slight incident at the local hospital, and it’s a little hard to hide a wall with a hole blown in it from a high meta.”
What.
“What hospital?”
The line went quiet.
“I…I’m feeling a bit like I’ve just ratted them out, sir.”
“I’m their father, it’s fine; what hospital?”
“Gotham General, sir. Mr. Daniel’s bodyguard broke a paparazzi’s legs as well, so…there’s also questions about using excessive force.”
Bruce allowed himself a moment to close his eyes and lament his quiet evening.
That was Jason. That was 100% Jason. This was absolutely something that had happened between the twins and Jason that they hadn’t wanted Bruce to know.
“I’ll get back to you on that interview,” Bruce said, hanging up without waiting for so much as a goodbye.
Without a word, he walked out of the BatCave and headed towards the garage, trying to occupy his mind to steer it away from imagining catastrophic injuries.
How unfortunate that his brain was insistent on catastrophizing something, and if it wasn’t allowed to imagine injuries, it was going to find something else.
Danny had been largely unknown to the press.
Gotham press Bruce could understand; they would understand the unspoken rule laid out by Janet and Jack to Not Talk About The Twin. But Metropolis news? They wouldn’t care at all.
There would have been reports on it. The Daily Planet would have called to ask for a story on property damage, not about the ‘hidden twin’.
There were other inconsistencies.
There were no pictures of Danny in the Manor, aside from the new one on the mantel that Alfred had managed to get the boy to sit still for. However, he was in the background of all of the photos he’d found of the Drake family online.
If it wasn’t for Barbara stating that she knew him, and for Tim’s easy familial interactions with him, Bruce would swear that Danny really hadn’t existed prior to-
Danny hadn’t existed.
He didn’t want to consider the possibility that Barbara lied, but if he did…
Tim enjoyed pranks. Danny was confirmed to have been captured by Ra’s. Danny had escaped. Tim had found Danny. More than likely, they had moved forward from there, and Tim was prone to becoming obsessively protective of family, and Danny was…
Ra’s had reached into a different dimension and grabbed that universe’s version of Tim. Except he hadn’t, because in that universe Tim had been born with an identical twin, and it would have been an easy mistake for someone not expecting that.
Tim and Barbara were trying their hardest to make sure that Danny had a place in this universe. They were trying their hardest to keep him.
Tim was absolutely not researching how to send Danny back; if he had been, he would have started refusing cases for the sake of research.
Bruce hauled himself into his car, started it, and took a moment to rest his forehead on the steering wheel.
He understood it, really. He did.
Danny fit into their family like a missing puzzle piece; he belonged with them.
But Danny was from a different dimension. He had to go home, no matter how much they wanted him to stay. His version of Bruce was probably tearing the laws of reality apart to get him back.
Bruce would do the same for any of his children, especially if it had been a kidnapping and not an accident.
Bruce sighed and slammed the car into reverse.
He didn’t have enough evidence, he would have to ask for further information.
And how he loathed admitting he did not know something.
In the meantime, he called the one person he would never have thought he’d have to ask for help.
He called John Constantine and told him, as Batman, that the Wayne family had a situation.
~~~~~~
John hated the rich.
Unless they were paying him, of course.
Which Bruce bloody Wayne would, if he wanted his help.
It had taken a bit of wandering, fending off hospital security, and walking past a smoking hole in a wall-fucking Gotham-before he’d managed to convince someone to just guide him to the room in question.
And because John was a snoop, and he knew he was, he stopped outside the door to listen in.
“-I know you’re from a different dimension, Danny, we just want to help you go back.”
“I don’t understand what I did wrong, why do you want to kill me?”
“Bruce what the fuck-”
“Old Man you’ve got it wrong-”
“John Constantine is on the way to pinpoint what Dimension you’re from. Danny, this hurts, I don’t want to do this, but you have to go back home.”
“But if you do that I’ll die!”
“Yeah Bruce he’ll-wait you’ll what? What?! Back the fuck up Old Man!”
“B, calm down. Your conclusion is inaccurate and you need to step back.”
“Danny, stop overreacting; your version of Bruce is probably very worried.”
Well this sounded like a lovely family conversation to walk into.
He opened the door without any fanfare and…yup. Rich people.
There was a revenant standing in front of an eldritch being waving an unused IV pole at Bruce Wayne while the CEO of Wayne Industries was trying to pull the old CEO away from the people in front of him.
Bruce Wayne was not moving.
“Right, so…I’m here to take a look at the…” John trailed off, finally getting a good look at the eldritch thing behind the revenant.
That was no kid.
That was an Ancient.
That was not just an Ancient.
That was the High King of the Infinite Realms, trapped in a mortal body and shackled to life.
This was not a God of Death, this was The God of Death; but tiny and human. Tiny, human, and for some unknown reason had chosen the Wayne family to live his life with.
John wasn’t going to pretend to know what went on in the mind of an Ancient Spirit turned God, but he did know how to take in what was in front of him.
The soul was seamlessly integrated into the body, only barely leaking out. There was a tether, presumably to the Infinite Realms, for the overflow of power that the mortal body could not handle. This looked like any other reincarnation, but with something more powerful than a normal soul.
Which meant that this was deliberate, and usually the reincarnated only held bare bone memories of their past life. If John actually did send the kid back to his home dimension, it was literally going to kill him. The only way for the tiny Royal in front of him to go back was through dying.
For all intents and purposes, this was just a kid. A kid acting as the eyes for a literal God.
And Bruce Wayne was about to royally fuck up said God’s judgment of their world.
“Wayne,” John whispered, eyes not leaving the Royal in front of him, “Wayne, we need to talk.”
“Ah, Mr. Constantine, you’re here. If you could-”
“Wayne,” John snapped, voice hoarse, “Get your bloody arse out of the bloody room right bloody now and listen to me!” by the end of his demand, John was not ashamed to admit that his voice had started hitting some very high notes.
Bruce Wayne’s eyes widened, and the fool finally acquiesced.
“Why is that guy always so gross?” He heard behind him as he closed the door.
He elected to ignore it in favor of setting the pompous rich arse in front of him straight.
“He isn’t lying; you send him back to his home dimension, he dies.”
Wayne looked stricken. Good. Now he had his attention.
“He’s a reincarnated soul from the Infinite Realms, and for whatever reason he decided that your family was the one he wanted to have. Why is he this old and a twin to someone who did not have a twin before? No idea. Not my business. But Wayne,” John walked forward, resting his hand on the man's chest before gripping his suit and yanking him down to eye level, “That kid is acting as the Eyes of a God. If you bugger this up, you bugger us up.”
John let the man go and walked away, throwing his business card over his shoulder.
“The JLD will keep in touch.”
~~~~~~
Tim had miscalculated.
Danny was still too high to be of any use.
Jason’s eyes were a luminescent green, so his cognitive faculties were essentially gone as well. Honestly it wasn’t a huge loss on his part, he doubted Jason would have had valuable input anyways.
His only saving grace was the occultist that had actually done something useful; he’d bought Tim time.
A quick text to Barbara that Bruce had catastrophized into the worst case scenario, again, and Tim got to work.
He stripped out of his suit jacket and pointed at Danny, catching Jason’s eyes.
“We’re switching places; help him undress and escort him out. Pay raise to-”
“You don’t have to pay me fucking money to make sure one of my brothers isn’t killed, Replacement,” Jason snarled, dropping the IV stand and turning to make quick work of Danny’s hoodie.
Danny tried to help, really, he did, but he couldn’t seem to find the coordination for it.
Regardless, in the three minutes it took for Constantine to lay into Bruce, he and Danny had managed to not only swap clothes, but to place an identical bandage on Tim’s hand.
Jason had only just managed to get Danny’s hair in the same style as Tim had when he’d walked in before they heard the door start to open again.
Jason took a half step back and placed himself squarely in front of the twins.
Tim was not surprised.
Jason's second worst nightmare, after all, was Bruce becoming a version of Willis he could not protect his siblings from.
From the look on Bruce’s face, he knew it, too.
Tim curled his hand around the batarang he’d hidden up his sleeve, fully prepared to do what he could to buy even more time for whoever Barbara had called as reinforcement to arrive.
But Tim didn’t get a chance to do that, because between one second and the next he was outside and being handed off to Kon by an only slightly winded Bart.
“Guys,” he started, feeling the migraine starting to build.
“It’s okay Danny we’ll break you out of Gotham and then Tim can come with you and then you can live with us forever because Speedsters are the best and-”
“Oracle said you’d been dosed with morphine, so I’m gonna have to carry you like Tim for a bit man. Sorry.”
“Guys-” Tim tried, but was manhandled into Kon’s arms.
“Don’t you worry about a thing Dantheman we’re gonna make sure you’re safe and then you can share your house with Kon because no one messes with Kon and you’ll be safe forever and-”
“You have the wrong twin, buffoons,” a young voice cut through, drawing their attention to the youngest Wayne.
Damian looked thoroughly unimpressed.
The look deepened when they heard the fire alarms start going off in the hospital that were more than likely, statistically speaking, courtesy of Jason.
“Come, Timothy; we must clean up the mess your poor planning has made,” the little demon brat ordered imperiously, turning on his heel and marching into the chaotic hospital.
Tim managed to wriggle out of Kon’s hold and patted his chest.
“Thanks, man,” he sighed, mentally preparing himself for the bullshit he was about to walk into.
Kon gave his shoulder a squeeze.
“I’ve decided that I’m gonna hang out in Gotham for a bit; just call my name if you need me, bro.”
Oh, Tim would.
He paused as he watched a very familiar motorcycle tear down the street.
In fact, Tim was tempted to call for Kon right that very moment.
“Timothy!”
…But he would have to face the consequences of his actions first.
TWINcognito mode Part 5(Tim and Danny Pretend to be Twins AU) (Yeah they aren't pretending anymore lmfao)
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 6, AO3
When Tim had found a version of himself dressed in traditional League clothes, armed and blank eyed, he’d been expecting a fight.
What he had not expected was for the clone to drop his weapons and hold out his arms, and then request for the brainwashing to be negated.
This was different. This did not follow the predetermined pattern for League clones.
And Tim was intrigued.
So he agreed, and tranqed the clone.
The process of carrying an identical version of himself to the Nest was more annoying than it was hard, and the electroshock therapy…he couldn’t do it.
He tried, he really did, but every single fucking time he heard the electrical charge gearing up he heard the laughter in the back of his mind, and it would take him hours to come back to himself. He kept trying, of course, but when he realized he was laughing along to laughter that only he could hear?
He called Harley.
And over the course of the next two weeks, he stayed very far away from the Nest while she worked her magic.
When he came back, she actually had a black eye, and she was very proud to report that his clone was a meta that had torn through the first set of straps. After that, apparently she’d resorted to reinforced steel straps. He’d managed to bend them, and Tim had no doubt that if the clone had enough time awake and aware he absolutely could have broken them, but they seemed to do the trick.
Kryptonite did nothing, and from the DNA analysis the clone was, in fact, completely identical to Tim in every way.
Well, except for the scars. And missing spleen. But those weren’t DNA coded and more of an aesthetic choice in terms of a clone for Tim.
So in short Tim had no idea what Ra’s had done to manage this bit of biological fuckery.
But Harley assured him that she’d gone over the list of possible trigger phrases and shocked the trained responses out of him, and that she’d even gone over a few that weren’t there and managed to nail down some hidden ones as well.
It was a good start, and Tim was thoroughly confused when she’d refused payment.
“For you specifically, this was just…payin’ it back. I never did apologize, did I?”
Then she’d taken one look at his face, smiled sadly, and left.
Tim had locked himself in the bathroom for sixteen hours, solved cold cases playing in the other room as he came back to himself.
When he’d finally come out, it had been to his phone blowing up; another argument in the group chat. He didn’t bother to respond; he’d already missed whatever had started it up, and it was probably winding down already.
Instead, he’d removed the restraints from his clone, made sure there were no lasting injuries from his apparent spats with Harley, and set about making some coffee.
The clone woke up.
He watched as he checked over himself for injuries, and slowly sat up.
“Did you just…shock the brainwashing out of me?”
Tim couldn’t help the laughter; something he and his clone had in common already, aside from being obsessed over by Ra’s.
But as Tim explained the situation to the clone, he couldn’t help but feel that this was a huge opportunity. He could see it as the same recognition flashed over the clone's face.
This was a clone not bound by brainwashing anymore, free to be his own person; he was completely identical to Tim, and Tim had no issues with him being a clone.
Maybe it was time he had some fun with the rest of the family; a nice little ‘fuck you’ wrapped in a prank.
His clone-his twin-agreed.
~~~~~~
The week they had before it was time to begin fucking with everyone was filled with…surprisingly domestic interactions.
~~~~~~
“What name-”
“Danny. I’m Danny. I’ve...always been Danny.”
“O…kay then. Do you have a preference for a middle name?”
“Nah, whatever is fine.”
~~~~~~
Tim shut the laptop he was using to monitor Ra’s activities in Gotham just as Danny came up behind him.
“I’m kinda hungry, do you mind if I make-?”
“I was about to order out,” Tim lied, yanking his phone out of his pocket.
Cooking, it seemed, was not genetic and Danny was the posterboy for kitchen hazards.
Danny was also hungry like, all the time. It was probably a meta thing, but because Tim couldn’t trust him not to burn down the Nest, that meant that Tim was eating more as well.
He was going to need to get his suits refitted, at this rate.
“Oh, uh…can we get burgers?”
Tim scoffed, already opening up the app.
~~~~~~
Tim slapped a hand against Danny’s chest, trying to rouse him from Tim’s shoulder; it was time for Red Robin to go scout and patrol.
Danny, in response, somehow managed to roll until Tim was trapped under a sleeping meta with enhanced strength.
…Fine.
Fine, he’d fucking sleep.
He just had to shoot off a text and ensure his patrol route was covered.
In the family chat, there was an explosion of people asking if he was actively dying.
Tim was not awake for any of it, though, as the weight of his cl-his twin was enough to force him to relax.
His last thought before drifting to sleep was that perhaps he should invest in weighted blankets.
~~~~~~
“So what superhero name do you want?”
“None.”
“Shit, really?”
“Yeah, no offense but like, your lives are way more complicated than they need to be. I’m good. Go ahead and put me down for like, world ending events though. Hard to live my life if there isn’t a world.”
“Alright.”
~~~~~~
Kon, Bart, and Cassie stared at Danny.
Then they looked at Tim.
Tim stared at them.
Danny just looked uncomfortable.
“Yeah, so this is my new twin-” was about as far as Tim got before he was swept up in a bone-crushing hug by Kon.
“You’re so much fucking better than Clark, Tim,” he whispered, tightening his grip for one final moment before putting Tim back on the ground, “Give him what I didn’t have in the beginning.”
Tim stood where he’d been left, stunned, as his friends grouped around Danny and started pestering him.
Unsurprisingly, Danny got on with Kon best of all. The shared trauma of being a clone and waking up in a hostile environment really helped to bind people together.
Bart and Cassie, not to be outdone, helped introduce Danny to the world of video games.
Tim was…proud. In a secondary way.
It was an odd feeling.
~~~~~~
Tim and Danny had been arguing for well over five hours, and Tim couldn’t even remember what had started it.
That didn’t mean that he was about to admit defeat.
“Look, I’m just saying that frogs are a valid control in terms of testing hormone induction!”
Oh, was that what they’d been arguing about?
“No they are not, and you know it! Frogs have a history of changing their sex for mating purposes and as a result, are not valid-”
“But it makes it easier to tell when a dose is taking effect!”
They were both red in the face and practically frothing at the mouth, and Tim felt…alive. This was one of the dumbest arguments he’d ever had, and if he had it with any of his other siblings there would be a risk of weapons being drawn for how heated it had gotten.
But he didn’t have to worry about that with Danny.
Danny, for as aggravated as he was, would never hurt Tim.
And suddenly Tim wasn’t angry anymore; it had just drained out of him.
“Neither of us are biologists anyways, this argument is probably wrong on both sides.”
Danny paused, narrowed his eyes, and the red drained out of his face as he huffed out a laugh.
“Yeah, this is pretty dumb. Wanna watch some unsolved cold case episodes?”
“I’ll order some fried chicken”
“Kinda want vegetable curry, actually.”
“Shit, that does sound better.”
~~~~~~
Tim watched Danny be driven away in the Uber, secure in the knowledge that his false documents were nearly perfect, and started getting dressed in his gear.
It was time to get to work.
~~~~~~
It was not time to get to work, they’d been made by Barb and she had stipulations for playing along.
Tim agreed to them, as did Danny.
Tim refused to admit that her fake documents maybe looked a little more authentic.
~~~~~~
Red Robin wiped the blood from his mask and stood up.
Batwoman tilted her head at him from across the unconscious assassins he’d left in a pile.
“Something we need to tell Batman?” She asked, her voice flat as she punched one of the awake ones out.
Red Robin shook his head, introducing his bo staff to another assassin’s throat.
“They’re just angry that I took someone from them.”
Batwoman vaulted over him, clearly taking great pleasure shoving another assassin through the emergency exit door on the roof and down a flight of stairs.
“Any idea when they’ll calm down, and is that person in need of a hideout?”
Red Robin was yanked into a chokehold by a particularly large assassin, but utilized the momentum provided to swing around to the man’s back and hook his bo staff over the front of his throat, bending the man backwards and choking him out as Red Robin landed gracefully on his feet, forcing the brick shit-house of an assassin to rest his head on the young hero’s shoulder as he talked like nothing was wrong.
“I sent him out of town, he’ll be fine. I just need to clean up before he gets back.”
Batwoman turned to face him, one assassin in a headlock under each arm as she strangled them into submission.
“Well, since I’m subbing for Batman, I guess this makes it my problem too. I’ll help you clean house.”
~~~~~~
Ra’s Al Ghul had been expecting another rooftop faceoff with Timothy. The boy was a genius but was also painfully predictable.
What he had not been expecting was a rooftop faceoff against Batwoman.
Of course, while he’d been distracted with that, Red Robin had blown up the abandoned building beneath them both, and really he should have expected the explosion at least.
It was an exhilarating fight, and a very good bargain for losing the clone.
Besides, he could always make more.
~~~~~~
Pru watched the last of Ra’s cloning facilities get blown to smithereens, a jar containing a spleen resting at her side from where she sat in the sand.
Tim was in the right; explosions were beautiful.
~~~~~~
When Danny returned from the trip, things had settled down in Gotham. Well, gone back to a normal amount of chaos.
Danny was in good spirits, and Tim was relieved to be able to let him out of the Nest; it had been getting a little crowded. But with Ra’s pushed back, it was safe…well. It was as risky as it would be on any normal day in Gotham to let Danny into the penthouse.
Plus, now that the actual work was out of the way, Tim could fully join in on the prank.
~~~~~~
Tim walked into the penthouse to a screaming fire alarm, a slightly smoky kitchen, and Danny curled into a ball on the floor.
Shit.
Tim made sure to shut and lock the door behind him before he set about silencing the alarm and ensuring that there were no active flames.
“Danny,” Tim started cautiously, sitting next to his twin, “You alright, man?”
Danny didn’t respond verbally, but he did hold out his hand.
Tim took it as a win and grabbed the offered appendage, making himself comfortable as he waited.
“...Am I real?” Danny whispered, his hand tightening its grip on Tims.
“Yes,” Tim answered flatly, giving a reassuring squeeze back.
“And…I’m myself?”
Tim leaned his head against the wall behind him, moving his fingers in a circular pattern on the back of Danny’s hand.
“You’re yourself, and no one else. You’re not me, and you’re not Ra’s brainless soldier. Take as long as you need.”
The next morning, the board of directors for Wayne Industries carefully kept their mouths shut about their CEO wearing the exact same rumpled suit from the day before.
~~~~~~
Tim was shaken awake by a bleary eyed Danny.
“Dick’s here, he’s asking for you.”
Tim groaned and rolled over.
Danny yanked up the sheets and kicked him out of the bed, stealing his place in it as he laid down.
“He has coffee and shit.”
Tim found himself staggering out of his room and towards a very confused older brother, making grabby hands at the beautiful drink.
It was only later, when they’d both woken up a bit more, that they realized exactly how close of a call that had been.
~~~~~~
“Duke made us like, immediately,” Danny declared as he walked through the door, tossing his bag on the couch.
Tim shrugged; it had been expected.
“He wants to join in.”
Tim grinned.
“I told him to act like he knew there were two of us, but to call both of us Tim. He isn’t allowed to say the name ‘Danny’ or he owes me a favor.”
Perfect.
~~~~~~
“So your nickname for the little demon is el-witwaat?” Tim asked idly, eyes roving over a case file.
Danny hummed in agreement, reading his own book on astrophysics. Apparently he swore there was a clear and accurate way to detect a supernova that was about to happen every time, and that current simulations being utilized to predict them were wrong.
It was over Tim’s head, and he quite frankly did not care. Give Tim a good murder any day, but he just wasn’t as into astrophysics as Danny was.
“To clarify, that is just your nickname for him?”
“Yup,” Danny answered, popping the p, “Just me; go find your own.”
Tim shuddered, returning to his case.
“No thanks; the demon-child and I aren’t on that level of…niceness.”
Danny lowered the book, raising an eyebrow.
“Is this because he tried to stab you yesterday-”
“-It was completely uncalled for and he’s a fucking psychopath.”
“Tim,” Danny said seriously, leaning forward.
Tim did not look at him, and instead tugged up the case file closer to his face.
“Have you considered that you might have deserved that one?”
“I did not-!”
“-Dude you stepped through his newest painting when you ran-!”
“-He shouldn’t leave his shit out then!”
“Tim.”
Tim went back to his case file, refusing to look at Danny again.
“Tim. Dude. You gotta apologize. That’s like kicking down a kid’s sandcastle at the beach, it’s a shit move.”
Damn it.
~~~~~~
Tim was almost made into a pancake by one of his best friends, because said friend thought he was his brother.
Back on the ground, hands on his knees as he reassured himself that he was still alive, he wondered how much longer they could do this.
Things were getting dangerous.
For Tim, of course. Enhanced meta twins were slightly less likely to suffer physical harm from things like getting dropped from fifty feet in the air with no grapple.
~~~~~~
Tim got a text from Steph.
It was a bunch of words, but the gist was that he was an awful person for not telling her about Danny and that he couldn’t have any of her cheesecake.
He ignored it and set the phone down, turning his attention back to the PR team.
His phone dinged again.
It was a selfie from Steph; all of the Birds of Prey were gathered around a table clearly being used for poker, snacks were everywhere, and Danny was getting his nails painted.
Steph
Ur not getting him back
Ours now
“Sir?” One of his employees asked tentatively.
Tim set his phone down again, this time fighting down a smile.
“Continue.”
Danny was getting his own friend group.
Tim was honestly relieved; it was people he knew and could vouch for personally, so he knew Danny would be safe where he was.
~~~~~~
So.
Danny had just come clean and told Tim that he’d been kidnapped from the afterlife.
That he’d had a bit of a big name in the spirit world.
That he was liable to be summoned at any given time, and end up literally anywhere on the planet.
That was fine. Tim wasn’t going to overreact. Tim could be an adult about this and proceed calmly and rationally.
Tim started looking into subdermal trackers.
Just because Danny had been joking, didn’t mean that Tim was.
~~~~~~
“My memories are a little scrambled, but I’m pretty sure that being tossed in this body was a prank,” Danny admitted around a mouthful of sandwich.
Tim tilted his head.
“How the fuck is that a prank?”
Danny shrugged.
“I think I’ve…existed? For a very, very long time. By comparison, a human lifespan is pretty short. When I get back I’ll probably get the joke, but right now it just seems like a dick move.”
“Huh. So. Got any family?”
Danny nodded.
“I can feel bonds to friends and family, and I’m pretty sure I’ve got three parental bonds going back to the afterlife and two sibling bonds. I have vague recollections, but just enough to know for sure that it’s not a delusion.”
Tim leaned back.
“Does this make me their stepson or stepbrother?”
“Well I don’t see why not.”
~~~~~~
It was easier to be together than it was to be apart.
Tim did not like that thought. That thought meant separation anxiety.
But Tim really did prefer to be with his family if he was with Danny. Danny was a perfect buffer; Tim would handle the vigilante questions and insults, and Danny could handle being personable and dishing out sass. His presence made it easier to talk to Bruce, forced Jason to be calmer (as Jason didn’t have any issues with Danny, so he toned down a bit when he was there), distracted Dick, and soothed Damian (for some unknown reason).
They were a good team, and Tim wasn’t sure how he’d handled all of their siblings without him before.
Tim also knew that he would never, ever request that Danny join him on patrols.
Case in point, it was nerve wracking enough trying to staunch the bleeding from Dick’s gunshot wound, and if it had been his twin Tim knew he wouldn’t have been as focused or present.
When he got home, he made sure to knock Danny’s contact information for the Justice league to the very, very bottom of the list.
Sure, he had to bend the rules and remove him from the heavy hitter section, but who would notice?
~~~~~~
Dinah.
Dinah noticed.
Tim had an unprompted two hour session about respecting boundaries and not overstepping them to protect others, and Danny’s name was put back in its old place.
Danny tried to cook him something as a consolation prize.
Tim was not aware that Danny would be trying to cook until he came home to the fire alarm screaming-yet again-and actual fucking flames this time.
~~~~~~
“Do you have anything else to say?” Tim asked, fighting to keep his giddyness off of his face.
Silently, he prayed that Dick would stick to his guns.
His prayers were answered.
Tim squeezed Danny’s shoulder and then set him loose.
~~~~~~
“Wait, so you’ve got a twin?” Bernard asked around a mouthful of chips.
Tim winced.
“Yeah he uh…hasn’t been around. But he’s back now, and the Waynes never met him, so-”
Bernard’s eyes lit up.
Yeah, he knew where Tim was going with this.
“The parent trap,” he whispered reverently.
“They know there’s two of us now, but they feel bad about mistaking Danny for me, so we’re milking it.”
Bernard cackled with glee.
~~~~~~
When Tim got home, it was to Dick looking like he was about to punch a hole in the wall as he stalked down the hallway away from Tim’s penthouse.
“Holy shit, what did you do?” He breathed as soon as the door was closed behind him.
Danny, lounging on the couch with a lazy smile, shrugged.
“I may or may not have spent the entire time acting like I knew almost nothing about him personally, that he knew nothing about me, and acting surprised when he was considerate.”
Tim snorted.
“So he’s pissed at himself?”
“And Bruce.”
“Fantastic.”
Tim was so glad he wasn’t going to be in the manor for that shouting match.
~~~~~~
Tim was being stared at.
Tim did not like that.
Tim looked up to stare back at the little demon.
They stared at each other.
“Timothy,” he started-and holy shit that was his name? When had the demon brat started calling him by his first name- “I have decided that you are clearly the subpar twin.”
What.
“Daniel is superior to you in every way. You would do well to observe and learn from him, though I doubt it would help you.”
Without another word, the little shit turned on his heel and walked out the room.
What the fuck had just happened?
~~~~~~
Tim glared at Bruce from the backseat of Bruce’s fancy car, hands shoved into his hoodie pocket.
“I won’t let you send him back,” Tim told his father, his threat clear and apparent for all to hear.
Damian tsked, turning to glare at Tim.
“The magician was perfectly clear that we cannot, Imposter, nor would I allow father to. But accurate information is vital to survival, and we must know what has happened to better protect Daniel. If you had handled this correctly, instead of committing to being a failure in every aspect of your life, we-”
“What Damian is trying to say,” Bruce cut in, “Is that I…was wrong. We won’t be sending Danny back. We do need to know what’s going on, though.”
Tim narrowed his eyes at Damian, curling his lip.
“At least I don’t go a literal month of not realizing the person in front of me isn’t-”
“Those were extenuating circumstances you buffoon, how was I-”
“Oh, I thought as the blood son to the world's greatest detective it would be childs-”
“Speak to me in that tone again and I will carve out your tongue-”
“Try it you short little-”
“Please say the name of the person you wish to call.”
Tim and Damian were startled into silence.
“Barbara,” Bruce almost pleaded, knuckles white on the steering wheel.
She picked up after one ring.
“Bruce if you hurt one hair on his head-”
“Please call a family meeting; I have Tim, Jason took off with Danny on the back of his motorcycle, and we need Danny to be there if we’re going to have a civil conversation.”
“Father I am perfectly civil-”
“B he’s the one who-”
“I’ll see if I can convince Jason to head towards the BatCave,” Barbara sighed, before the call ended with a click.
“Now, how about we play the quiet game?” Bruce proposed through clenched teeth, eyes firmly on the road.
They managed to maintain silence for about five minutes.
