BnHA Chapter 290: It’s Touya Time

Previously on BnHA: Iida and Hadou showed up like a couple of Pennsylvanias and Georgias to bail Shouto out at the last minute. Ochako and Toga had an exceptionally strange fight which consisted of Toga being all “guess what Ochako, I used your quirk to murder someone, how do you feel about that”, and Ochako being all “I do not like that”, to which Toga was all “:(”. There was some doll-stealing and some bookcase-yeeting, and then Toga left in tears because Ochako was all adamant that murder has consequences. Anyway so I have absolutely no idea what Toga is thinking now, but I guess we’ll have some time to stew on it, because we ended the chapter by cutting back to the Iida+Hadou+Shouto VS Afomura battle, which was interrupted by Gigantomachia and the LoV showing up like a bunch of Floridas to ruin everyone’s nice day.

Today on BnHA: Horikoshi hands the mic over to Dabi and is all “take it away, kid.” Over in Room 315 of Musutafu General, Rei is all “may I please watch some TV” and the hospital staff is all “sure”, and so she tunes in just in time to catch Todoroki Touya’s Peabody Award-winning documentary “Number One Hero, Number One Fraud: The Todoroki Enji Story”, which is being broadcast nationwide courtesy of Skeptic and his magic laptop. Meanwhile in Jakku, Dabi is all “I’M TOUYA, BITCHES”, and Shouto and Enji are all, “(゜◇゜ )”, and Dabi is all, “anyway so just to sum it all up, because of how much of a jerk Endeavor was, I am now Evil.” Everyone continues to be all “(ﾟoﾟ)” except for Dabi, who is all “└(˘▾˘┌ )≡ ( ┐˘▾˘)┘≡┗( ˘▾˘)┛≡┏( ˘▾˘)┓≡┗( ˘▾˘)┛” for pretty much the rest of the chapter. Idk. Just let the man have his fun, guys. He’s waited a long time for this.

y’all I have a confession to make. I am technically not spoiled for this chapter thanks to my robustly paranoid system of spoiler-tag-filtering, which is extensive enough that it pretty much will catch whenever someone so much as breathes something even remotely new-chapter-related. that being said, I like to think that I am capable of making basic logical inferences! and so the fact that for the past 36 hours, my dashboard has pretty much nonstop consisted almost entirely of this...

...has led me to conclude that MAYBE, POSSIBLY, PROBABLY, BUT ALSO DEFINITELY, a certain someone is finally going to reveal his ~secret identity~ woop woop. lmao

anyway so everyone, please remember to act surprised though, as we would not want Dabi’s feelings to be hurt at all. he has been planning this moment for the last decade or so and I wouldn’t want him to feel like all of that effort was for naught. so just play along, okay. OH MY, IF IT ISN’T THE LEAGUE OF VILLAINS’ MYSTERIOUS DABI. WHATEVER COULD HIS ARRIVAL POSSIBLY BE HERALDING, I JUST DON’T KNOW

anyway so we really are cutting back to Jakku now, and Gigantomachia is all, “MASTERS”! which, I wonder if he really did use the plural? that’s right Machia, both of them in one place now! that sure is convenient for you huh

lol what is this with all this AFO monologuing. you’re really gonna make me read through this when I’m sitting here all sleep-deprived from election week. JUST GET TO THE TOUYAS. WE WERE PROMISED TOUYAS!!

alas, in spite of myself I do have two serious takeaways from this. one is that AFO is still controlling most of Tomura’s body behind the scenes, which both does and doesn’t bode well for Tomura (like, at least he’s not dying, but the long-term implications of this for his free will and such certainly are not Good). and two is that this confirms that Ujiko did give Tomura at least one powerful mutant quirk, which explains why he was still so deadly and indestructible even when Aizawa was using Erasure on him (since Erasure doesn’t work on mutant quirks, just emitter and transformation ones)

MEANWHILE ON TODAY’S EPISODE OF “TODOROKI SHOUTO’S TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD LIFE”

I like how he doesn’t actually say that he can’t take on Gigantomachia. just that he can’t take on him and Afomura at the same time. that’s confidence, baby. that right there is why you always draft Todoroki Shouto in the first round for your fantasy team

is that really all there is to the origin story though?? feels like we’re still missing a huge chunk of it. what was it that finally sent him over the edge? or was the trauma of being created as Endeavor’s perfect little hero tool and then being subsequently rejected by him enough on its own? because I’m still kind of confused on the part where he goes from “abused and discarded by his father” to “killed thirty people and was plotting the murder of his own brother” to tell you the truth

(ETA: lmao the initial fandom reaction to this did not disappoint. listen guys. people can be traumatized and shaped by awful circumstances that are completely out of their control, and grow up to be people they wouldn’t have grown up to be if things had been better, and all of that absolutely sucks, but. it doesn’t mean they get a get-out-of-jail-free card for all of their future actions, either! the tragedy of this situation is that terrible things happened to Touya, and he then went on to do terrible things himself. the tragedy of it is that this is exactly how the cycle of abuse keeps repeating itself on and on and on. maybe one of the people Dabi killed had a child who will now grow up traumatized themselves, and potentially go on to pay it forward themselves when they grow up. the tragedy is that the eye-for-an-eye justice that Touya is seeking out won’t actually make anything better in the end. the tragedy is that we understand why Touya is so angry, but that anger has basically warped him into the gleefully sadistic dancing figure we see in this chapter who has stopped caring about anyone else’s pain or suffering and just wants his own revenge.

anyway. basically what I’m trying to say is that it’s possible for the concepts of “Todoroki Touya was an innocent child and a victim of abuse” and “Dabi is a grown-ass motherfucking adult who killed thirty people and PROBABLY NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THAT” to coexist lol. like, y’all wanted your moral grey, well HERE YOU GO lmao, eat up.)

next collection of in-progress naruto thoughts!

[spoiler policy disclaimer first, as always: I'm only still in the early stages of Shippuden (we just finished the arc where we met Sora from the Fire Temple and the Guardian Shinobi Twelve. I literally had zero interest in Naruto growing up, so I remain unspoiled for virtually everything that happens past this point. I would love to stay that way, so please don’t interact with this (tags included, because the notifications now show them to me automatically) with any spoilery commentary, including even general things like “oh i love this show but it gets less good after X point” or “X season is better than Y season” or any general assessments of quality/likability/etc re: future seasons. Thank you! <3 ]

- i am really just losing it over how the relationship between naruto and sakura has become so strong and solid and how it’s so clear how much they care about each other and how they finally really feel like they have a deep friendship. like. they have a real bond now. naruto sleeping with all the notes sakura wrote him clutched in his hand - i was about to scream. how he is SO horrified that he hurt her while he was in the nine-tails state, and how she didn’t tell him because she knew how upset he’d be and she didn’t want him to feel guilty. how she sees him turned into this vicious creature that’s hurting himself and is flooded with all these memories of him as this happy-go-lucky little kid. how she tells him “i’m here too. we have to be strong, you and me, together” after they’re both devastated over how poorly their first encounter with sasuke has gone. his awestruck thought of “sakura...you’re amazing” when she’s treating kankuro in the sand village. i just can’t get over how their relationship has grown. how she used to think he was so obnoxious and annoying, and now they are perfect partners, with a deep friendship rooted in mutual respect and admiration - they really are the stiles and lydia friendship progression of naruto, aren’t they?

- also BRUH sakura was the first one to take out one of the guardian shinobi twelve AND the first one to take out an akatsuki - FUCKING INCREDIBLE! i cannot even explain how happy i am to see her out here being amazing. the story actually thinks she matters now, and it is beautiful.

- when asuma came out swinging with “CHILDREN AREN’T PAWNS”!!!!!!! oh my GOD. I was YELLING. ASUMA. I LOVE YOU.

- i have now met yamato/tenzo and he is precious. i was a little frustrated with him in his first arc because i didn’t understand why he was allowing the kids to drift so far off-mission and infiltrate orochimaru’s hideout to “retrieve” sasuke when there was literally no way they would be able to succeed, but ever since then i have become fond of him. i really, really like seeing him and kakashi be friends (the way kakashi just keeps fucking with him, lmao) and it warms my heart whenever kakashi uses his real name. (fyi the episode tag where yamato is drunkenly ranting to asuma about how overworked and underappreciated he is was SO fucking funny; i would watch a hundred episodes of those little slice-of-life moments without any hesitation.)

- sai was a surprise - i literally had no idea this character even existed. he is v. cute; however, i remain EXTREMELY concerned about what the fuck kind of training program the anbu black ops is running, and i hope we aren’t just gonna let this slide, because i mean, sai said they like - take in war orphans and like........turn them into child soldiers?????? i just????? this seems........Bad???? like something that perhaps the hidden leaf administration should uhhhhhhhh........be concerned about???

- the FACT that naruto was SLEEPING in kakashi’s HOSPITAL ROOM for DAYS waiting for him to be discharged lmao i CANNOT <3333333333

- LOVED seeing tsunade stand up for naruto when he wasn’t in the room. “he is a SPLENDID ninja and an asset to this village!” tsunade is fed up with naruto half the time because he drives her crazy, BUT i loved to see the show remember that her entire first arc was about how naruto manages to stir something hopeful in her and how “there’s something about him that makes you want to bet on him.” she cares about him and she does respect him, even when he’s driving her up the wall. when they flashed back to that forehead kiss she gave him, the one she gave her little brother - goD <333

- also absolutely LOVED seeing the kids being dumbasses together. when they all get into that silly, non-serious fight with sora and naruto, and then lee comes soaring in like “WHO PLANNED THIS MIGHTY MEETING OF FISTS WITHOUT INVITING MEEEE” and they’re all scuffling and yelling and shikamaru is just staring at them off on the sidelines with asuma like “...idiots”.........so beautiful.

- speaking of which - we started the team asuma vs. akatsuki arc the other night and boy i am enjoying seeing this group again, and i am esp. LOVING seeing more of shikamaru’s dynamic with asuma - one of my favorite moments in shonen jump was when asuma dropped out of the trees and annihilated the nine guys who were about to take shikamaru’s head off; it was the first time i cheered while watching the show - but i will say this: this arc is making me kind of nervous. i hope i am stressing myself out for nothing. :/

- i think this show is doing a really good job of giving all the akatsuki members unique and engaging personalities. i still cannot get over how all the members of this group seem to hate each other, lmao. i cannot believe they ever get anything done XD but i guess that’s pretty realistic for if you got a room full of selfish criminals together and asked them to cooperate with each other - it’s half of what makes them entertaining to watch.

- kakashi whipped out the rasengan in one of the last episodes we watched and honestly i could not POSSIBLY have been more pleased. i had wondered about that a long time ago, and now i have the answer :) naruto’s reaction......he is SO dismayed that somebody else can do it, lol; he literally doesn’t listen to the point kakashi is trying to make because he’s too busy grumbling XD XD XD

- relatedly - i sincerely hope kakashi takes the time to parade naruto’s inevitably successful new jutsu up and down in front of jiraiya like “well well looks like ONE of us was able to teach our student how to finish the rasengan” >:)

1. top 3 ships: uhhhhhhhh, im gonna say currently rather than all time, glimmer x adora x catra, idk lol its a cute idea and theres a bunch of cute art of them together lol. ive been rly enjoying my next life as a villainess, the mc, catarina, doesnt realise she has at least 2 girls in love with her with a 3rd on the way. i wish i could believe it will resolve in polyamory but. maybe we'll at least see her get a gf. bc. its been very blatant about her friends being in love with her. one of them, mary, has been in love with her for years and is trying to sabotage anyone else falling in love with her, and the other, wont say who bc spoiler, is her reincarnated best friend (its an isekai show) but doesn't realise it, and in the last episode some magic made her speak without inhibitions, and the first thing she does is tell catarina she loves her in like, the romantic way. so you know, fingers crossed. other than thaaaaaat... uhhhhh.... oh i guess poppy and barb from trolls 2. i like that movie. wish it was as gay as it clearly wants to be. also i need to keep watching rwby, ruby/weiss/penny is rly cute.

2. last movie i watched: i watched. half. of osmosis jones with friends earlier today. very gross movie. last complete movie was probably the cgi tintin movie..?? good but idk. before that was trolls 2, for the 2nd time. those movies are great.

3. last book i read: i cant read. well i have adhd so i dont read much anymore. i miss novels but i do listen to audiobooks. currently listening to interesting times by terry pratchett with my gf. last physical book i read was uncaged vol 1, a book of queer dnd adventures with a focus on like, uhhh, monstrous women iirc. its good. def recommend. havent read the whole thing tho.

4. food im currently craving: idk how to answer this lol. i could rly fuck with some mcdonalds or burger king. anything salty spicy and deep fried.. im a glutton and i have sensory issues with food. i tend to eat mostly comfortable or safe foods with good textures and tastes. anything outside my comfort zone usually bad stims me, which is like. horrendous. it makes food hard but also like. good food is rapturous. i like stir fry a lot. my gf cooks stir fry a lot and i always love it. and i like putting condiments on things. bbq sauce, soy sauce, and like, if i can get it theres this rly good peri peri salt they sell at nandos. god i love salt and spicy things. i had a korean burger once that was so spicy i couldnt finish it in one sitting and god i want another. it had a black bun and the chicken was bright red with spices, it was great i miss it. theres this spicy burger mcdonalds did once that had like. battered and deep fried jalapenos on it and spicy salsa and chicken and it was godly. oh and the spicy shaker fries. miss those. dream burger would be something like, korean spicy chicken with some kind of sweet tangy spicy sauce, battered jalapenos, bacon, salad, and a hashbrown coated in some kind of spicy salt. i used to like subway a lot but idk now. i also love donuts. and pastries. and oranges and citrus fruit in general. pears are great too. im not usually into like, candy or chocolate tho its too sweet. oh i love chinese food. noodles and rice and meat and vegetables and sauces, all packed with flavour and amazing textures... chinese food is so good. sushi and japanese food in general tends to be my jam too. most things with rice are rly good. not curries tho i cant eat many curries, i like butter chicken tho thats always good. i could keep going lol i love food. oh turkish food is good. and greek? lots of good meats. tho i cant deal with uhhh... tabouli, parsley kills me on contact idk. and cilantro. but i love souvlakis those are great. pasta is alright, i like tortellini and ravioli and gnocchi with lots of cheese. oh and pizza. with everything on it. especially anchovies. i love anchovies and olives and feta... and pepperoni... and garlic bread. cured meats in general are very good. root vegetables too. capsicum and chillis are yummmmm. im sure i could go on... food is. so good. its euphoric. oh i love ramen too! and uhhh, ramyun i think its called?? i think its korean? its spicy and very good. thicker noodles too. anyway i should stop this is too much lol.

Ascension of the Cyberman

Saw a slight spoiler because Doctor Who posted the trailer for next week’s episode on YouTube already, and it was a suggested video on my homepage. All I saw was the thumbnail, and it was something I already expected. So it could have been worse. It just sucks that they didn’t wait until after it aired in America to change the thumbnail to the spoiler.

OOOOHHHHH THAT WAS SO COOL. THAT TRANSITION INTO THE OPENING SEQUENCE. I LOVE IT. Also, “hands of a believer” concerns me. This is starting out way too sweet and adorable. I am concerned. Very concerned. This nurse that we caught one little glimpse of also looks familiar... Only 7 humans left!?!?!?!??!! “We’re not soldiers.” See but that’s better since the Doctor hates soldiers. Oh god if any of the fam die in this moment I will kill Chibnall. WHOOSHING??? A TARDIS? Nope not a Tardis. Cyberman heads. Cyberdrones apparently. Welp. Now I just miss Handles. Ok so that’s at least one of the last 7 humans is dead... I think I saw 2 dead bodies though. Oh poor Doctor. No Ryan no don’t get separated. Is this a Tardis??? Ok no it’s flying with an engine so no. Ethan no! No Feekat (who’s name I had forgotten and had to look up later)! “That makes it trickier. Unless you’re me, which I am.” Amazing. I love the Doctor. The dad’s jawline looks like the Lone Cyberman’s... I thought that at the beginning when he first showed up too... and I guess they’re trying to make us think Brendan’s becoming the Cyberman... but Pat’s jawline is much more similar... I do not trust him because of that jawline... Random place in the universe? Welp. Yaz and Graham will be lost forever or at least for a long time while the Doctor searches for them. I assume from us seeing some of them in the promo they’re fine but like... the Cyberman got in... so like... how do they get out of that?

And the Brendan thing. WAIT. AM I DUMB? Wow. I am not deleting my stupid question about wiping his memory and making Cybermen. I’m not deleting it because that was a complete stupid moment and it should be documented. That had to have been a chameleon arch. I was too into the whole Cyberman thing so I thought it was a Cyberman conversion, but that was chameleon arch wasn’t it? And the clock too, which I had noticed and though “Hmm.... fob watch...” but then went back to focusing on Cybermen.

At the beginning when he was just a baby I was like “Oh, he was found just like Yana.” but I didn’t write it down because I’m stupid. And even though I questioned the whole surviving a gunshot and fall off a cliff thing and wondered if he was a Time Lord, I didn’t actually go any deeper than that.

So if that was a chameleon arch... does that make Brendan the Timeless Child?

Also, guys. I am SO HAPPY to see the Master again. God. I love Dhawan’s Master more than any of the others I think... which hurts to say since Missy’s my girl... but like... he won me over so quickly and I am so happy to see him.

The Master is the thumbnail of the trailer by the way. So all I saw was the Master, who I already knew would show up since Sacha was supposed to do 4 episodes and there were only 2 episodes left so he had to.

Guys I’m still mad at myself for literally ignoring the chameleon arch in front of my eyes and being like “oh but is it Cyberman conversion?????” They literally zoomed in on them taking his heartbeat multiple times, and I noticed it! And in the back of my mind I kept going “Oh is he a time lord?” and then pushing the thoughts away because this is supposed to be an episode about Cybermen. Because I am dumb.

And what if this is how Time Lords came to be! We’ve theorized for years that they are humans but higher up in the evolutionary tree. I can’t remember if I brought this up in Orphan 55, but I think I did. Guys. Evolution. Humans either become dreggs or time lords. I guess either depending on the timeline or maybe we just branched off and humans are the common ancestor. Either way. If we have canon evidence of humans being the ancestors of time lords, I will be glad. I personally love that theory. But I’m also the type of person who’s been waiting a billion years for the Doctor being half-human in the Movie to become actual canon. I was so sure that that was where the Hybrid story arc was heading...

(Update: I know I definitely theorized about dreggs and time lords at some point, but it was not in my Orphan 55 post. It was probably in the tags of some random post that I will never ever find again.)

“Becoming (Part 2)” is one of the most badass and devastating episodes of television, ever. I love it.

Oh man. Either “Michael’s Gambit” or “Janets,” probably.

I mean, Season 1 is true perfection. The kind of perfection that will likely never be attained again, though I’m in for the entire journey of watching them try to get back to that peak.

Since it started airing in 2016.

It was a JJ Abrams show at a time when I was deeply obsessed with LOST (oooh I should have included LOST in this) so it had an automatic start from me. I ALMOST gave up on it too (the first half of the first season is rough) and then about midway through Season 1 it found its footing and the actors found their characters and I was hooked forever.

12. Who is your favorite actor in 4?

Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Head, Sarah Michelle Gellar.

13. Which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5?

All of them, that’s why they’re all in this. But if you threatened to cut off my hand or something, “Stranger Things.”

Honestly, it’s Jason and Tahani, who are half-canon and hopefully end up together because it really is so wrong it’s right.

Considering spiders are pretty gross if you think about it, both sides have a point…

Murata’s a more fun character than I thought a bit guy would be…in fact, that might explain why we learn his name, as opposed to being a nobody (like the female Slayer on the mountain that got killed by Spider Mama).

“I think we’re a lot better now.” – Aside from Zenitsu’s hands, that is…*makes disgusted face and thinks of KFC sporks*

Sleeping Ukogi is totes adorbs…*face beams with happiness*

Uhhhhhhhh…I reallllllllly dunno what to feel about Zenitsu’s love of girls. He’s no playboy, that’s for sure. Unfortunately (?), I do agree with Zenitsu on how Inosuke deals with girls though.

Update 2: No, the sentence was punctuated funny: “You’ll be up against myself, Aoi and Kanao there.” Turns out Aoi really is blue grumpy girl, because the sentence is missing a comma after “Aoi”.

“Please forgive me.” – Hey, Moya, you were right. Plus, that random Haganezuka appearance was funny – that’s been the first time in a while that I’ve laughed at Demon Slayer properly.

Apparently Shinobu and Tanjiro on the roof is a meme now. Now I see why.

“…with their instincts laid totally bare.” – I feel like slayers and demons aren’t so different, because even thought both fight for survival, slayers fight for revenge (in a sense, bloodlust) and demons for actual bloodlust.

“I feel like I can rest easy now.” – Sounds like an early death flag to me! (I may be an anime-only watcher at this point, but I encountered some spoilers that showed me Shinobu’s fate. Be mindful of that if it seems like I’m accurately predicting the future.)

Shinobu and Tanjiro…hmm, what a combo.

I love how the Zenitsu and Inosuke in the background react to crimes they’re being accused of in the foreground.

Hmm…I heard about gaman (“tolerance”, “persistence”…or maybe “working through hardship”…?) being a concept in the past few years and I think it’s very much embodied in the streotypical Japanese man…or just Kanata. Who knows?

So…what language are Kanata and co. really speaking? It seems like English, based on the spaceport screens (I rewatched ep. 1 today, I should know), but they’re speaking in Japanese for the sake of the fact it’s anime, right? Update: I also noticed quit a bit of the spaceport advertising is for Lucy Lum, while there is special attention paid to Aries’s eyes in ep. 1.

This is what they mean when they say “history is written by the victors”. To build from that, my idea is that the hegemonic idea becomes the truth, i.e. majority rules wins the ability to write history itself (e.g. patriarchal values, able-bodied people’s values etc. write history, not the minorities).

Aries may have eidetic memory, but she sucks at names. That’s consistent with ep. 1 too.

Oh, right! Kanata’s right arm is his dominant one!...I never knew such fond memories could be made of a single character’s appendage…who knew.
