okay, maybe this logic is full of holes. maybe i'm totally insane. but isn't it really implied in UNDERTALE that the red soul you see throughout the game isn't Frisk's soul at all, but is actually Chara's soul?

like, okay. i started thinking about this because i really don't like the idea that Chara is just mysteriously with Frisk in a completely unexplained capacity, not physical or anything, just their... ghost? i don't know, but the point is, the more i think about it, the more it seems to make sense that the red soul is Chara's soul throughout the whole game. and i'm frankly surprised i've never seen anyone bring it up.

firstly, the battle interface. this is something i've always wondered - if the one participating in the battle is Frisk, why is the name of the first fallen human just..... inexplicably always present on the battle screen and stat screen? i've just never understood why it would imply that it's showing Chara's HP and not Frisk's, considering Frisk is the one that's actually there.

except, what if it is Chara's HP?

suppose it's not Frisk themself taking damage, it's Chara's soul taking damage. this brings me to another point. why does the soul shatter upon death? they're not supposed to - human souls are supposed to persist after death. all the other human souls did. but consider, chara's soul, assuming it's been around since they died, has been around a hell of a long time. decades, at the very least. this would make the shattering of the soul make significantly more sense. it's been around for a long time, and it took a bunch of damage. of course that would cause it to break.

next. why does Flowey mistake Frisk for Chara? yeah, they dress similarly, but like, come on. Chara was your best friend and you still can't tell them apart from the new kid that just fell down? but if we consider that every fallen human has a different soul, and Flowey saw that Chara's soul was in Frisk, it would give a bit more merit to Flowey believing that it is actually Chara.

granted, this is one of the more significant holes in the theory. if Flowey recognised Chara's soul, why didn't Toriel or Asgore? it's worth noting that Flowey didn't seem to realise that Chara was there straight away, he only notices at the end of the Ruins even if you're doing a genocide run. maybe it did just take him a lot of observation to realise it was indeed Chara.

so let's consider the timeline. Asriel returns from the surface and turns to dust. while the Dreemurrs are mourning, Chara's soul returns to their dead body, not to revive themself somehow, but to lie in wait. their body is stored in the coffin in New Home, until Toriel takes their body with the soul still inside to be properly buried in the Ruins.

so, we're set up now. chara's body is buried underneath the flowers where the humans will fall. now i'm just throwing this out there, but what if Frisk was soulless? this gives us a scenario where Chara may not be able to enter any of the first six humans' bodies because they already had souls. but when Frisk falls, Chara's soul finally has an opportunity to enter their body and take control.

that would make sense to me, at least. but i was pretty quick jumping to the idea of Frisk being soulless, right? well, the reason i find this idea interesting is because not only is it much narratively cleaner having one soul in a human body at a time, it's also a popular fan theory in DELTARUNE that Kris was soulless before the red soul in that game possessed them. now, there are people who believe that Kris has multiple souls, some people even believing they have up to three. but i much prefer the cleaner solution of only one soul being necessary, and i think there's a lot of potential here for an extremely interesting parallel to be drawn between Frisk and Kris' situations.

(i'm aware this reasoning is by absolutely no means flawless, feel free to agree or disagree if you'd like!)

I love starting an AU with the basic premise of "V2 Ultrakill respawns in the Omori universe and builds a new life and identity alongside a budding friendship with Kel"

Only for it to mutate to "the Earthmover also spawned in Tokyo and spurred the rise of Godzilla and other kaiju which leads to an international coverup that piques the interest of Asriel Dreemurr because of the loose threads in said coverup story, prompting him to dig until he finds his family has ties to Monarch, which Hero gets dragged along to due to the other machines present in the Earthmover attack reminding him way too much of V2's few given descriptions of the other machines in Hell"

And then capping off with "Kel, Aubrey, Kim, and Mincy collectively 'adopt' and raise a newborn individual of Godzilla's species and come up with the name 'Minilla' entirely independently from the movies that exist in-universe"

Ok so this isn’t art or tsp related, but there’s something that I just remembered, but I can’t tell if it’s real or a dream and I can’t think of a good way to look it up that doesn’t get unrelated results.

Rant Explanation under read more (it’s about an Undertale (and Deltarune? Maybe?) au but it’s not a weird one from what I think I remember) (If it’s real I need to find it, nostalgia and my persisting identity/memory crisis are calling)

So basically I think I remember that a while ago (I think back around 2017-2019) I stumbled upon a really complex Undertale au (likely including Deltarune though I’m not sure). It was this really detailed, plot heavy, overarching comic (I’m pretty sure it was a comic), but the thing is I can’t tell if it was even a real au or just some dream I had, both seem pretty plausible.

Of what I can remember of the au, it completely rewrote the cannon lore, introducing a new species, angels (possibly another but again I’m not sure). The new lore was very centred around the meaning of the Delta Rune symbol (image below just in case), and I think angels still existing was a secret, possibly comparable to like ancient Greek mythology in Percy Jackson. The angels were divine beings that took part in the Human/Monster war, though I’m pretty sure the entire war was rewritten, I can’t remember how though. They existed on their own plane of reality, I think it had heavenly symbolism like living in clouds or marble pillars, etc. I’m pretty sure they were very big beings, I don’t think building tall but pretty up there.

As for the comic (or possibly just illustrations) itself, I remember the art being detailed and skilled, with a lot of intense scenes. Strong inks, I’m pretty sure, though I could be entirely wrong about the art since I was young and stupid at the time. The writing was extremely lore and angst heavy, I can’t remember anything lighthearted but then again I barely remember any specifics. I also wouldn’t know the specific characters featured in the comic, due to the fact that if this comic/general au was real, I wouldn’t have known much about cannon Undertale or Deltarune due to not having access. Despite that fact, it still would make sense for me to be at least exposed to this comic due to the fact my only friend at the time was really into utdr aus and generally introduced me to fandom culture, so it would check out (around the time I remember seeing it I could’ve very well been learning about other ut aus so I would recognise it as Undertale without immediately recognising anyone, especially since I don’t think I read it too much at the time).

There’s not much else that I remember about the au, but if anyone has any idea what I’m talking about, please let me know! I don’t have notifications for tumblr, so I may not see it immediately, but dms, asks, comments, reblogs, all are ok with me, and I check them regularly anyway! Also, if you have any clarifying questions, don’t be afraid to ask, there very well could be things I’m missing in this description ^^ /gen /pos

ok so with how many undertale conversations i've seen on the internet i've never once seen anyone talking about the difference between the in-game and soundtrack versions of certain songs so i might ramble about that for a little bit

so idk if this is like. a well known thing but a few of the songs in undertale play at a different tempo and pitch in game than they do on the actual soundtrack release of the game, and i'm not actually sure of the exact reason for it but honestly i actually prefer the in-game versions in most cases i think

the most significant cases that i can think of for this are probably CORE, death by glamour, SAVE the world and his theme, there might be other examples but those ones had the biggest impact on me personally (in-depth analysis of each below)

starting off with CORE the wiki says that in-game it's played at 0.4 semi-tones higher than the soundtrack version. the song is amazing regardless (what do you expect it's freaking toby fox of course it does) and is absolutely one of my personal favourites on the ost, but i love especially how this version keeps the momentum and energy super high in battles, as this is the only song in the soundtrack that continues to play during battles which is a feature that i ALWAYS love when it comes up in games.

whereas in the rest of the game you're always stopping every now and then to befriend whatever monsters try to attack you, this simple change to the music keeps you always focused on the task at hand, that while you are still befriending anything that comes your way (in the context of pacifist at least), you're doing so with the ultimate purpose of keeping moving on and on to your final destination, and it gives a whole new dynamic to this area that you haven't seen throughout the rest of the game. combine this with alphys, who has been a pretty comedic character up to this point while still having everything under control, completely breaking down and leaving you on your own to make your way through the CORE, and it's just such a perfect setting for a final area

immediately after CORE is death by glamour, which interestingly actually plays a little bit slower in-game than the soundtrack version - according to the wiki it plays at either 95% or 97% of the speed depending on if you skip his pre-fight dialogue, which?? really makes me wonder if this one is intentional or not, but whatever! you'd probably think that a slower speed would make it feel less energetic, but honestly i love this version! (yes i will be defending all of these)

the soundtrack version gives off the feeling of a super energetic dance battle but in my opinion the slightly slower tempo of the in-game version gives you slightly more room to breathe, to think about your next move to get your ratings as high as possible - it is a turn-based rpg after all, and the in-game version makes it feel more like a beautiful dance where every move is not too frantic, but is well thought-out and executed to perfection in all aspects

skipping ahead a lil bit, the next one i can think of is SAVE the world, which according to the wiki plays in-game at 95% of its soundtrack speed. i love this one guys. i know i love them all but i really love this one. the slower speed adds just a little tinge of sadness to the song, which really sells the feeling that you're trying so hard to reach out to these monsters that don't remember you, but are trying to hard to, but they just can't quite get there, but you can slowly coax them out of their lost soul state by showing them the same acts of kindness that you always have, until they finally remember who did those kind things for them, and they remember themselves as well, and god it's so good

last one i'll talk about here is his theme. this one is probably the most significantly changed, being brought down to 85% of its original speed in-game. this time it's really not a subtle difference like the other cases, it pretty much completely changes the tone of the song. it's kind of hard to describe, the soundtrack version gives off a very hopeful vibe, that despite everything that's happened, everything's going to turn out okay

the in-game version to me feels like more of what asriel is feeling in the moment. he's gained the power of a god, but he's still just a lost kid, and he's suddenly having to struggle with having all of these emotions that he had lost for years, and he just doesn't know what to do. he still believes that the person in front of him is the fallen child that was his best friend, that he watched die hundreds of years ago, and he just so desperately wants them back, but as they continue to reach out over and over i think he realises that he's trying to escape from reality, that his friend is gone and this is just a genuinely kind-hearted person that wants to reach out to him and help him through his feelings.

the rainbow laser at the end shows his feelings so well. ATK power in undertale is defined by the person's willingness to hurt others. asriel is trying so hard to kill the fallen child so that they'll keep playing the game, but his attacks continue to do smaller and smaller fractions of their health, his ATK power literally dropping as he has less and less desire to hurt them.

i know i didn't stay on topic very well but honestly this is just a ramble about how the subtle changes in the in-game versions made me feel differently compared to the soundtrack versions and yeah i've been thinking about this game so much recently and i love it so much guys thank you if you read all this 🥺

if you want one more example to check out for yourself i'm pretty sure reunited is also different in-game than in the soundtrack but i've been writing this for so long and idk what else i could say about it :')
