Universal Soldier (1992)
Tumblr media
Summary: Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) is resurrected as part of the Universal Soldier programme after being killed in action in Vietnam. His arch-nemesis, Sergeant Andrew Scott (Dolph Lundgren) has also undergone the same procedures.
Largely forgettable Lundgren/ Van Damme teamup that wants to be Robocop but, unfortunately, Robocop got there first.
Rating: 2.25/5

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning
Я бы назвал это мягкой перезагрузкой после Universal Soldier: Regeneration, но… Tinker, Tailor, Neon Assassin, Runner in the Shell

Universal Soldier 1 (1992), 2:The Return (1999), 3: Regeneration (2009), and 4:Day of Reckoning (2012)
A programme of military super soldiers goes wrong as some subjects go haywire and one of their most promising recruits is sent to deal with them.
The first installment of these films is the more intense one, the lighting is of a higher quality and there’s enough mystery regarding the fundamental nature of the fictional world to keep it engaging. The lore is interesting enough and it has some appealing anti-government subtext which is dealt with well without being too clearly stated.
As the sequels role in they drop in quality right from the second film. They don’t steadily decline but none of them come close to the first one. The whole franchise is far too reliant on action but as it gets to the sequels it seems to replace some of the character development and even narrative coherence with more action scenes.
An AI mastermind appears in the second movie making it rather different in style as well as creating a new kind of threat to keep it from feeling like a repeated idea. The third one picks up a bit better than its predecessor by relating more to the themes of the first one without actually copying the story.
The fourth one effectively kills the franchise by being the worst thing an action film can be: dull. There’s still the obligatory fights but the motivation isn’t clear so there seems little reason to invest. It could almost have been a poor imitation of the Matrix with the slow motion shots and affected reality. The ending was also disappointed because the enemy was someone it turned out not to be practical to defeat which means no hope of closure.
Universal Soldier: 4/10 -It’s below average, but only just!-
Universal Soldier 2: 3/10 -This one’s bad but there’s some good in it, just there-
Universal Soldier 3: 3/10 -This one’s bad but there’s some good in it, just there-
 Universal Soldier 4: 2/10 -It’s not THE worst, that’s something else. But…-
-The first film was branded an unintentional comedy due to the delivery of some lines and a few humorous scenes. It was also criticised for its similarity to Robocop (1987).
-Two TV movies were created in 1998 as a back-to-back miniseries set to start a TV series, however they didn’t and aren’t considered cannon with the rest.
-The second film is also largely ignored by the franchise due to its financial and critical failure.

Universal Soldier (1992)
Tumblr media
Universal Soldier has a certain appeal, but who are you kidding? If you’re watching this film, it’s only because you’ve already seen Terminator 2 so many times you’re starting to get tired of it.
In 1969, Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) died taking down his sergeant, Andrew Scott (Dolph Lundgren). Scott went mad and began accusing innocent Vietnamese of being the enemy. In present day, their corpses are reanimated under the “Universal Soldier” (UniSol) program, an elite counter-terrorism unit. When a mission triggers a memory deep inside Devraux’s electronically-controlled brain, he goes on the run from the program that created him, now led by an increasingly self-aware Scott, with TV journalist Veronica Roberts (Ally Walker) as his only ally.
Universal Soldier is similar to the classic James Cameron 1991 picture with a few elements from the first thrown in for good measure. A woman on the run from what is essentially a killer robot that blends in with normal people. Her ally is a similar android, but it has turned against the system that created it. Both are immune to conventional weapons. The action scenes are similar, there’s kind of an element of time travel, at one point Veronica must even surgically remove a part of Deveraux to increase their chance of survival. It’s not a shot-for-shop ripoff but the entire picture just feels like it was cobbled together from the rejected bits of a better film. A “Dr. Pip” to the original’s “Dr. Pepper” if you will.
It’s a wannabe, but a decent one. Van Damme is no Schwarzenegger, but he’s well-suited to this part and Lundgren as the ear-necklace wearing psycho is effectively menacing. The action is pretty good, as are the special effects (which mostly constitute of pyrotechnics, but those explosions look convincing). The premise is appealing, though nothing I would call special. Too bad everything here you’ve seen before and better. Robocop comes to mind as similar thematically, for example. The more I think about it, the less weight the positive aspects of Universal Soldier have. It’s little more than mindless action when you get down to it. You'll be entertained while it's playing, but only nostalgia would draw you to watch the adventure more than once and nothing about this screams "franchise".
I doubt Universal Soldier was considered special back in 1992. Since then, age hasn’t improved it much. I suppose those who want to see Van-Damme’s impeccably sculpted body might like it (his rear is shown quite prominently). For everyone else, you can do better. (On VHS, March 11, 2018)
