MicroFic May - A Vampire Chronicles Fandom Event

What:

Four prompts will be given each week, for all four weeks in May, starting on Sunday, May 4. The goal is to use one or more of those prompts to create short fiction for that week: drabbles, ficlets, vignettes, and short works aiming to be between 100 to 1000 words. (Though no one is going to be mad if you go a little over.)

You can post your work on Tumblr, AO3, anywhere you post fic. Please tag @vcmicroficmay and use the hashtag #vcmicroficmay to help us find your work so we can share it, and feel free to message us if you think we missed your entry!

Why:

Short fiction is great! It’s challenging to keep things short but that’s part of the fun. A limited number of words can really draw things into focus and can highlight things that might otherwise get lost. It allows writers to explore new ideas or ideas that one would not necessarily write a longer story about. It offers the chance to explore little moments and slices of life without the pressure of turning it into a longer work.

Rules:

Entries should aim to be between 100 words to 1000 words, though no one is going to be counting and it’s fine to go a little over (or under!)

Works can be inspired by The Vampire Chronicles books, the IwtV movie, the AMC show, the musical, whatever.

Late entries are great!! Creativity doesn’t work on a schedule. We appreciate your fic no matter when it appears.

You can post your work on Tumblr, AO3, or wherever you post fic and link to it from Tumblr. We will have a collection on AO3 you will be able to add your work to as well.

I sort of covered this in my post about whether I get defensive about Daniel or not, but they don't really. Because if someone's interpretation of him is so far off the mark for me that it would be upsetting, then I just scroll past and move on. It doesn't do me any good to agonize over it, and it doesn't help the other person to have some rando to jump in and tell them their take is bad or whatever. That isn't going to change hearts and minds. 😂 We don't all have to agree.

47. Does this character ever make you laugh sincerely?

He does! He has some funny lines in canon. Some of the stuff he says to Armand is hilarious. And even in Blood and Gold, when Marius is talking about how he's out of his head and he's just like "Whatever, man," it cracks me up!

He has a really sardonic, dark sense of humor and I really appreciate it. I love when people write him making quips or being sarcastic, I think he has a lot of potential to be very funny.

I’ve been keeping close tabs on the development of the amc Interview with the Vampire since 2018 when I first got into the books. This is when Anne and Christopher were just hinting at its development. I remember many fans being cautiously optimistic but then getting progressively disheartened and nervous it’ll get botched up. (Because the atrocity of the Queen of the Damned film still felt very fresh)

I remember the casting being announced and everyone gritting their teeth with anxieties of if these actors were capable of pulling this off….. So now after this lovely weekend of so much content being released/revealed and so much of the fandom rejoicing with excitement it’s really exciting to see. I’m glad we get to see all of the comic con interviews and hear from the actors and crew about how passionate they all are about this story.

It’s a great day to be a Vampire Chronicles fan and I already know it’s going to be a fantastic October.

The last vestige of the old, feral, uncensored internet where the freaks, queers, and undesirable lived. This is where you let the dark sticky weirdness out. And for fucks sake you're in the ANNE RICE VAMPIRES FANDOM. That woman, someone rest her soul, would have taken a page sized add out in the New York Times against the concept of the word "Unalive" if she even thought anyone would apply it to her beautiful, gorey, messy, freakish and decidedly queer works.

Anne's mind is so fascinating to me. She really had a whole plan for Daniel and Armand (which as wacky as it was, was a plan of sorts), and instead of even alluding to it in the books, she was like: "yeahh Daniel... that guy. He lost his mind for a while, lived in Marius' house, built some train models, then got back together with Armand and then moved to his house... any q's? No? Thought so. So, about that mural...", I unironically love her so much lmaooo

Oh my gosh, me too! I unironically want one of those t-shirts with the scan of her brain on it. Her mind was fascinating.

I’ve been in and out of this fandom since the 90s and I think one that keeps me coming back is that there’s just so much in this world that’s left unexplored. So many throw away lines you could write half a book about (DM is full of these but it’s true of the entire series!), so many scenes that are glossed over or suggested or implied and never fleshed out.

There many conversations and encounters that must have happened that just do not appear on the page—they were in the Sonoma Compound together for a while, and on Night Island together for a while, then at Court! All of them have talked and interacted and what we get in the books is just a tiny fraction of it. Which makes sense mostly-- I mean, somethings arguably should have been included, like Louis' reaction to Daniel as a vampire for example!!--but obviously a lot is happening in every book and there just isn't space. Louis had to condense the entire story of his life into one night, he couldn't go night by night for hundreds of years. No one is going to spill every detail or every moment. It all comes down to the pieces that build the main picture, and then we can then take it and infer the rest from that.

Anne was masterful at leaving little breadcrumbs you can follow if you want to. And of course, she was such a talented, skilled writer, who created these characters that just feel real and alive. She had her quirks and she was human. She wasn’t always right about things and sometimes she was more willing to admit that than others. She was just a person who told amazing stories and those stories have stuck with me since I was far too young to be reading those books, and now here I am, almost 30 years later, still writing fic, still rereading the books and finding new little nuggets I’d never noticed, still so excited to hear other people’s interpretations of scenes or characters, and to read other people’s fic that explore all these little crumbs and flesh them out.

When I say I love this fandom, I mean it from the very bottom of my heart, and we owe Anne so much for building a world that we have so much room to play in. It really is incredible. It blows my mind sometimes how real and visceral and powerful the world of the VC feels. But I digress!! I completely agree, anon. Even if we don't get a lot of Armand and Daniel in the later books together, we do get a satisfying story for them as a couple, and we get the joy of filling in those missing pieces ourselves. 💖
