one thing that’s been very clarifying for me in the course of reading Paxton’s Anatomy of Fascism is the way he lays out how fascists appropriate left-wing rhetoric for their own pro-nationalist and pro-capitalist ends. The age old talking point “did you know the Nazis were actually socialists” is a direct result of this - fascist power is in part built by obscuring the reality of class division in order to appear “working class” and to claim they have popular support (which is a lie). they do this by appropriating left-wing talking points to speak to the middle class, blaming foreigners and foreign competition for their economic precarity, blaming marxists for trying to destroy democracy, etc. this tactic seems to still work fantastically given how so many liberals and middle class progressives still insist that bigotry is the domain of the working class. Adorno also describes how fascists use antisemitism in particular to appear anti-capitalist, by casting Jews as the misfit bourgeoisie, framing the problem of capitalism as something that can be solved by a changing of the guard, replacing the weak rulers with the strong. fascists are not anti-capitalist, they dislike when capitalism degrades conservative social norms, such as requiring middle class white women to work outside the home, or allowing beer companies sell alcohol with pride flags on it, or make visible the non-white working class. They don’t want an end to capitalism, they want their women in the home and their servants invisible and the image of themselves reflected back at them in their consumption habits at all times.
this is, also, how terfs continue to cast themselves as left-wing - they appropriate the language of feminism for their own right wing goals, which is a society in which gender division is comprehensively enforced by the state. Their biggest issue right now is that the enforcement of this division has waned - trans people are “allowed” into bathrooms now, into change rooms now, into sports now, and most of all, we are now visible in public life. They want to build the power of the state up, not so that they may seize it to liberate women or abolish patriarchy, but to reinforce the traditional gender norms they see as withering away. This is why terfs align themselves with the right wing - this is not an uneasy alliance, there is no contradiction here. They want right wing power for themselves, and they use their feminism as a spectacle to obscure this goal. once you understand this, it’s incredibly easy to tell the difference between a terf and a left wing feminist. these people are as left wing as the nazis, which is to say, not at all

There's an increasingly common plot device or framework that I'm seeing applied where a basic antisemitic narrative is retold with the evil Jew figures replaced with Nazis in an effort to make it no longer antisemitic while still telling the same basic narrative. For a concrete label, let's call it... Protocols of the Elders of Nazism. The Illuminati exists; there is a secret society threatening children with bloodletting, but it’s the Nazis this time, so it's no longer antisemitic (?). With enough care, this can be executed well, but it may be substantially flawed and wind up supporting real world antisemitism with what reads as a dog whistle or first layer of Nazi propaganda to make new recruits accept basic premises of Nazi ideology before hitting them with the hard stuff. This latter condition may be due to bad writing or literal Nazi propaganda and the lack of clarity is part of the problem.
There are a few instances where this is done reasonably well (YMMV), to make an antifascist point from a place of respect toward Jews and Jewish culture. Roald Dahl was very antisemitic, and his The Witches book reproduces the blood libel narrative, as does the 1990 film adaptation, but the 2020 film attempts to spin this around to code the witches as Nazis with a smattering of German (I believe I read somewhere that Anne Hathaway deliberately played her witch character as a Nazi). Guillermo del Toro's The Strain draws heavily from Dracula and Nosferatu, both frequently labeled as antisemitic, and spins the narrative to have the vampire bad guys intertwined with the Nazis while heroic Jews oppose them. Hunters does similarly, with a Nakam-like rogue group of heroic Jews (eh... *handwavy gesture*) opposing a secret conspiracy of Nazis.
And then there is worse execution, with the framework often appearing as leftist populism while also ferreting in ideas in common with rightist populism/actual Nazism. The Boys comics drip with allusions to antisemitic conspiracy theories as part of its populist message but technically has a Nazi bad guy and villainous American fascism, which makes me consider the comics to read like an antifascist work made by an ex-Nazi the day after he decided he was antifa. The Boys TV show (which has a significant Jewish presence in the production) is better but still suffers this problem with its depiction of an evil pharmaceutical company exhibiting traits in common with antisemitic conspiracy theories, just now with a Nazi origin associated with a revamped version of the comics' Nazi bad guy as well as the American fascism element. Associated terf ideas bring Abigail Shrier's antisemitic conspiracy theory to mind, as well.
Hogwarts Legacy dresses its goblin antagonists up like Nazis, has a line of combat dialog be "I was only following orders!", and depicts them as racist against humans... while also an allusion to anti-SJW Nazi propaganda characterizing feminist game critics as a Jewish conspiracy. The goblins drip with antisemitic imagery but are supposed to be Nazis. With one of the main developers' active advocacy for Gamergate and fixation on Anita Sarkeesian, who I believe was demonized through the main goblin antagonist in allusion to neo-Nazi antisemitic memes ("Anita Jewkeesian"), I think it's reasonable to characterize the game as Nazi propaganda. It's worth note that journalist Robert Evans suggests in The War on Everyone, his audiobook chronicling the development of American neo-Nazism, that Gamergate could have been created by Internet-savy neo-Nazis to spread propaganda.
Most recently, Wonka--also an adaptation of a Roald Dahl work--depicts an evil money-grubbing cartel with characters alluding to Hitler in name and appearance... and seemingly alludes to terf Abigail Shrier's antisemitic conspiracy theory with this evil cartel drugging a woman's daughter to give her a mustache. A chocolate that makes you get clever ideas, made of the essences of lightning and sunshine, is also concerning. ("The lightning and the sun" is a phrase from Nazi occultism representing Hitler as a heroic god figure opposing spiritual chaos, and you can find references to it as dog whistles in various places. Joe Rogan seems to have been indoctrinated in this ideology and similarly dropped references to it. It's possible someone involved in the production of Wonka stuck in lightning and sun references to dog whistle?)
This trope should not be seen as an instant fix for narratives grounded in antisemitism and may indeed carry ideas serving to induct people into coming to accept antisemitic conspiracy theories and associated problems. My takeaway is that depictions of Nazis should be handled with great care. It's not simply acceptable to stick them into any old evil archetype and call it a day. When resurrecting antisemitic narratives, care must be taken to insure the antisemitism itself doesn't propagate, whether or not Nazis are in it as bad guys.

Is it just me or is censorship all across social media getting really bad lately? Pinterest just removed a whole bunch of my pins for sexual content - they were all fully clothed queer men and women showing vague intimacy, nothing overtly sexual at all. Like one they removed was literally just two men's heads leaning on each other. That's wacko right??? Have I missed something big going on?
Tbh it's been getting increasingly terrible for a long time, anon, it's not a lately thing, it's been since before the Tumblr purge, and it is at least in some part due to the SESTA/FOSTA law that got passed in the USA, and the increasing passing of laws in many countries that are specifically concerned with removing net neutrality and treating all of us like 3 year olds.
It will get worse, not better. And you've probably been missing a few big things! It sounds like you were most directly impacted by what happened with Pinterest, so you've just noticed it. Many of us noticed it around 2018 with the Tumblr purge. Some of us have been impacted by elements of it way earlier, due to Livejournal's Strikethrough which necessitated the invention of Dreamwidth and helped to really get AO3 off the ground. And this was back even before we now have many laws that scare a lot of big companies into removing adult content.
Steve Jobs famously hated / loathed pornography and was on a mission to literally try and remove it from the internet, and part of that mission was to - as much as possible - make it nearly impossible for apps that have it to get listed in the Apple store. This is partly why AO3 doesn't have an app. This is why Dreamwidth doesn't have an app. This is why the Tumblr Purge happened - so they could continue to have an app. And while some sites don't get targeted, as soon as you do get targeted by the Apple store, it's either 'provide your legal identity to prove that you're the age you say you are' to access adult content or it's 'goodbye adult content.'
We've also had an increasing rise of morally panicked, puritanical TERF-informed anti-shippers who believe that their emotional reactions to fictional content they find troubling are firstly valid moral judgements, and secondly, a valid reason to abuse, bully and send death threats to real people. And these people basically work hand-in-hand (often without realising) with extremely powerful Evangelical Christians who have government influence and a lot of money in the USA and literally work to change laws to make it reflect an extremely puritanical vision they have of the future. You know, the homphobic, transphobic, misogynistic, racist, kinkphobic, bigoted, antisemitic etc. etc. etc. one. (It's highly ironic and tragic that most antis are young and queer and just extremely uneducated).
I'd say people notice based on what impacted them directly. So some of us realised in 2007. Some of us realised again in 2018. And since then there's been a lot of blows from a lot of sites. In a way, Pinterest is joining an already very bloated bandwagon of sites cornered in the manner. The reason why people say 'unalive' these days instead of suicide, or 'r@pe' these days instead of rape is because of Tiktok censors. The reason so many folks moved their adult fanart and art accounts off Instagram, or they've gone dead, is because of Instagram censors. The reason so many adult writers on Patreon are very careful about what explicit words they write directly onto the site is because of Patreon censorship.
After all this, it's possible that Pinterest has a bug and are implementing a new AI algorithm for detecting adult content, and it's just broken. In those cases, reporting and appealing actually often does help. When Tumblr first implemented their algorithm, it wasn't very well trained yet, and like, pictures of fruit etc. were being banned because the AI algorithm was still figuring out what to do. Tumblr was in a rush in order to keep the app in the Apple store (over 70% of their income is from app users, the site would have literally died if they didn't act quickly), and so they ended up with an extremely overzealous and initially broken (and still sometimes broken x.x) algorithm.
If Pinterest is going through something similar, either with the app store or with having to address a sudden legal change, they may be having algo problems, and reporting will help them train the algorithm better.
Trust me, there will be people behind the scenes - staff at all of these websites - who hate the changes as much as you do, even if they can't say so for professional reasons. But even the new owner of Tumblr got pretty close to saying 'it fucking sucks but we have to do it if you want the site to exist' (which honestly made it a lot more...possible to handle the change, because it's not usually the sites you have to hate/resent, but the laws getting changed around you. Also if anyone here is an adult and can do so - please vote!!!)

theres a quote from cs lewis about the dangers of being so addicted to righteous anger that you feel a sense of disappointment when you discover something terrible a bad person(/group/institution/ideology/country) has done actually isnt true, rather than relief that it didnt actually happen. and i think it's very right; righteous anger is a tool to an end of bad things not happening, not an end in itself, and it's much better to ground your outrage in love than hatred. and especially when we consider how social media companies incentivise cycles of hatred and outrage for click.
but i think there is also a more sympathetic and yet even more insidious reason why we do this (and maybe lewis touches on this in his work, i'm just going off a half-remembered quote), which is that in an age where bigotry and cruelty is so often veiled under layers and layers of self-justification, we come to view blatant evil almost with relief, as if nobody could possibly deny it this time. terfs can hide behind women's rights and thinking of the children instead of 'transsexuality is a mental illness'; homophobes can hide behind being forced to make cakes for gay couples and religious liberty instead of 'God hates fags'; Israel can appeal to accusations of anti-semitism instead of calling for open genocide.
so it's tempting to want them to put their cards on the table, openly, so everyone who half-heartedly sympathises with their broadly respectable bigotry can recoil in horror and disgust. it's an understandable urge. but almost inevitably these tendencies will come mask-off eventually; there's no need to be disappointed when the latest news of their shittiness turns out to be false. and will their mask-off bigotry even change anything in the end, really? or do we just hope it will?

Reminder that people who have been in one high control group tend to end up joining other high control groups (including the guy who developed the BITE model).
Reminder internet movements/communities/pipelines often become high control groups.
Reminder that online communities that demand you at all times police yourself and everyone else around you, and/or sell you a worldview of complete nihilism where people not in the in group are evil or stupid and only you the people in the group Know The Truth and embody Goodness because what the group believes is the only correct way to be Are High Control Groups and if you find yourself in one you should consider getting the fuck out of there.
If it walks like a cult and quacks like a cult, it’s probably a fucking cult.
Flat-earthers/Q-anon/Atlantean/ancient alien conspiracy theorists (all of which are rooted in anti-semitism and most of which originated with the Nazi party) are high control groups, and most of the people in those communities are also in fundie Christian cults.
The ‘rationalists’ who push shit like the imminent evil ai which must be protected against and simulation theory and a Lot of Eugenics and also that one extremely notorious Harry Potter fanfic back in the day are high control groups.
Terfs are a high control group, and so are the community which is basically their inverse: the black-pilled part of the manosphere/incels. Once again most people in those groups are also in or formerly from fundie Christian cults. In the case of terfs, some people in the community genuinely believe that they are progressive and feminist which I find very darkly funny given that the entire terf movement has been proved to be intentionally created and spread by, you guessed it, the same fundamentalist Christian evangelical death cultists who are trying to seize governmental power and proposing anti trans bathroom laws and bans to anything remotely sexual or divisive in internet spaces.
Multi-level-marketing companies form high control groups out of their ‘sales rep’ consumer bases who don’t realize that 96% of them will never make a profit and they’re not supposed to, because they are actually the company’s market. And yes, mlms are incredibly popular with people who are also in a fundie cult, which is why they’re the most popular in the United States in Utah.
And the anti-shipping community is also a high control group which has found extreme purchase in algorithmic rabbitholes on tiktok and twitter. And it’s pretty apparent that most people in that community are either currently in some sort of repressive Christian religious environment or formerly so, given how many of them keep telling people to burn in hell for disagreeing with them.

Final stance on Hogwarts Legacy:
I've done my own research and found that pretty much everything people are complaining about and using to demonize the game are just lies, or misconstrued. A short list of some of the most common ones:
The "cultural objects" goblins are trying to retrieve were NOT stolen from them. They were sold to wizards generations ago, and now goblins want them back because the original person who purchased them are dead.
Giving money to the game gives relevancy to JK Rowling: Partially true. Honestly making such a big deal out of it gives her more press than if people just bought the game, playing it for a week, finished it and dropped it
The alt right developer was fired\left the company TWO YEARS AGO and did not finalize the project, and receives no money from it
You can kill goblins with no penalties: Yeah, you can. You can also murder humans too. You have the OPTION to play an evil character. Just like you do in many other games. I don't see people making a fuss about that in the Fable series.
Everything you guys are saying EXCEPT for Jk being a terf is factually wrong and actually pretty easy to prove. Even her getting royalties from this does nothing because she is a book writer and has no legislative power. If she has donated to hate groups, not even the GLadd page that literally only exists to track her actions knows about it.
You, the player character can BE TRANS. You can freely choose which dormitory you go in, regardless of your gender. There is a great supporting character who is openly trans. There's characters that casually mention their same sex partners as well.
"There's a star of David on the bank floor!" Incorrect. This does not appear in the game. This was ONLY in the (first?) movie and was a feature of the filming location, London’s High Commission of Australia, and did not appear in subsequent films. It was on the floor because that's a real world location and people literally didn't notice because the star in question is just an outline.
"Goblins are evil and that's antisemetic!" I have jewish friends who were unaware of the controversy surrounding this game and bought it. When I talked to them about this they basically asked me where the hell I was getting that idea. They didn't see the goblins as jewish, but as GOBLINS, fictional creatures in a fictional world. On the evil part, ONE Goblin is evil. He has some followers, but most of them are being mind controlled. Hell, you find out the Goblin is question was being lied to and used by evil wizards! Setting up a red herring villain is a common story telling trope.
The Gladd page I mentioned. All in all this debate seems to be led by people who hated that Harry Potter was popular and are now using the fact that most people on this damn website have very poor reading comprehension to crusade something.

the person behind the dogs
Hi, I’m Kayla (she/they/he idc really)
I’m agender, living in the southeast U.S., working for a pet insurance company, and now 30 something. Possibly ADHD, but definitely depressed and anxious.
I love sighthounds, purple, lgbtq+ history, watching other people play video games, and changing my hair every four months.
I hate the cold, doing yard work, pickles, and the headaches that inevitably accompany alcohol.
I am pro lgbtq+ and trans rights, pro BLM, pro union and worker’s rights, etc
I am anti-terf and swerf, anti-capitalist, anti-racist and anti-ableist, anti-fascist, etc
I am also constantly trying to learn and grow and improve myself. I do my very best to treat everyone with respect, empathy, and equality. If I fail at that, please let me know.
I own my own home, spending money and thinking about my budget makes me want to puke, and I have plans to start my Ibizan Hound breeding program in the next few years (granted health testing works out).
My website is ianthehounds.weebly.com. I have a tiktok @ianthehounds, and eventually I’ll get my Instagram and Facebook set up under the same name.
I really value honesty and open discussion of the pros and cons of dogs and breeding in general. If you have any questions at all, please ask!

I genuinely do not understand The Discourse around Palworld. Now, for full transparency, I don't really particularly care about the game, I've not played it, nor do I plan to. I'd rather stick with my FPS games and metroidvanias. I'm probably the closest to being a neutral party on the issue you can find in the gaming community. That being said...
Stop with all of the "[Megacompany X] needs to call their lawyers!!" nonsense. Yes, they have designs that look like Pokémon. Yes, they have designs that look like Monster Hunter monsters. However, I have one important question here...
Why the hell do you care?
First off, we're talking ripoff designs of IPs owned by companies that make profits in the billions. These companies, especially Nintendo, have - or at least have access to - very good lawyers. Do you really think Palworld - a game made by a company based in Japan, the SAME COUNTRY as the companies I see people saying are having their designs stolen, meaning this theoretical lawsuit would be 100% domestic instead of bringing the headaches associated with an international suit - would have made it to release if Nintendo, Capcom, or any other company had standing for a plagiarism lawsuit? Especially when Japan doesn't have fair use laws? That, to me, already tells me these designs are clearly in the "legally distinct ripoff" category, and that's okay. Obviously plagiarism isn't a good thing, but if this was close enough to be considered such under laws that don't include fair use provisions, it's FINE. Even if it's not the most ethical, ripoffs and bootlegs are gonna happen. This one is just has more publicity than most.
Second, these are - again - billion-dollar companies that make more money than most people can even truly comprehend. Why are you defending them so much? No matter how much I may like the older Pokémon games, such as Platinum, we are talking about one of, if not the single most profitable franchise on the fucking PLANET. Not only does it not need Random Schmuck #582183 to defend it online, the people behind it likely don't fucking CARE. The Pikémon Company is like 50% or more owned by Nintendo, which is a company that - as we've seen time and again with their takedowns of passionate fan projects with 0 profit incentive such as AM2R as well as their draconian YouTube content policies for creators - doesn't care about their fans at the best of times, and is actively hostile towards them more often than not. Why do so many people defend these large corporations like doing so is going to get you a "thank you" letter from Miyamoto? Why are you supporting massive billionaires like your life depends on it over some 3D models that, as previously established, are more in the "legally distinct ripoff" category than anything else? Are you so invested in their corporate wellbeing that you feel the need to try and do their PR & legal teams' jobs for them?
At the end of the day, Palworld is a game made by a team that seems genuinely passionate about their craft, that has been a fun experience for many people across the world. Let those people have their fun. And if the designs being ripoffs is such a problem for you, just don't buy the game. Simple as that. If you're that worried, let the notoriously litigious companies like Nintendo handle it. Don't try to be an ass to people just having fun in a video game. Hell, if you're so convinced this is a case of direct plagiarism, just stop supporting the people making stuff about it like we did with the people who played the Shitty Wizard Game. Obviously this issue is nowhere near as bad, as it's just a case of ripoff designs instead of people financially supporting an anti-semitic, racist TERF who sees financial support of her franchise as support for her ideals and uses the platform that gives to call for things like trans genocide, but the principle is the same in practice - just don't support it or anything to do with it, and chill the hell out.

2023 In Review
for me, 2023 just kind of... came and went. very quickly. i kind of wish it didn't.
there's been some horrific mental-health stuff, not aided by what's going on, both in my little corner of the world and across the world in general. i'll start with the negatives, so we can end on a positive note - that seems like a good outlook for the year.
there's obviously the horrendous situation with the writers and actors strike, where garbage studios think paying people for their hard-made art is very much an optional thing rather than fucking mandatory. yet in this year, warner bros, the company who's the most mask-off with their transphobia (still releasing HP stuff and hiring a TERF and sandy hook truther to voice one of the most well-known female characters in mortal kombat), releases a 2 hour toy commercial and gets heralded a Feminist Masterpiece for the same messages that Mean Girls and Legally Blonde had shovelled out two decades earlier. there's also just the countless fucking genocides. i'm hoping and praying that the victims of those genocides are not wiped out, even if i've acknowledged i cannot help directly.
but in addition, i think this year just sealed the deal for me about the cosplay community. i'm still routinely dragged to cosplay events - it's either that or be socially isolated for two whole months as it's all that gets talked about - and the local 'in-crowd' community is as garbage as ever. someone a close friend wanted to hitch a ride back towards the city with just. randomly started spouting anti-trans sports propaganda to us? she started complaining about trans women 'having a biological advantage' by being taller or whatever. the absolute second that this person was away from a transmasc friend and with two people she didn't fully know, she just assumed we were both cis and went full mask-off with transphobia, and that indicates to me that things have gotten worse since i left. i want to return to cosplay badly, but the fucking community just keeps letting shit like that slide, going to a con run by a neonazi and excusing it with 'it lets me see my friends!' like they've never learned how to plan an outing more than two weeks in advance before. ultimately it makes cosplaying barely worth it; it's an expensive hobby that now only for my own validation. there's no leftist cosplayers in queensland - only people cosplaying as leftists.
it also doesn't help that, off-topic, i am pretty sure i know my dad's care for me is hollow now; something happened in september to prove it to me. there's also the fact that this year introduced me to now having chronic back pain thanks to his neglect, and i don't think i'll ever get any sort of apology from him. and while probably the least-bad thing in the list, one of the more charismatic members of a channel i'd just got introduced to had sexually harassed a semi-guest of the channel.
that said: in newer spaces, and in general, i think things are looking up. the aforementioned channel kicked the sexual harasser, and re-structured so that it was unlikely to ever happen again. i joined up with a new group of people to play Blood on the Clock Tower in-person every month and online a few times a week - and quite frankly i would trust those people with my life. i think just having something to do that isn't a popularity contest has been healing. i'm not super close to the people there yet (or maybe im misjudging it? i don't know how healthy relationships irl work if i'm honest). sewing has been fun, as has finding out an interest in vintage patterns - i'm hoping in 2024 to actually make some of them. finding resources for free patterns (via mood.com - a really good resource, i've found) and having fun with the creation has also been fun, though my fabric stash is getting pretty full now thanks to my many trips to a second-hand fabric store. the last con of the year also wasn't all bad; really only cementing my decision to remove myself at the very end of the con day. i wouldn't have considered coming back at all if the con hadn't been a fun time; even getting to meet someone who was a fan of my youtube channel. a recent bout of hostility for a two-year-old video because someone decided to grift off it had given me doubts about my channel; bad or not, those videos are still fully mine, more than, say, somerton- sorry, i mean someone can say. but i think just being able to see someone, physically, who liked my videos, made it a lot better. (and i purchased a pronoun pin from them and the pin is super duper cute and they gave me a really cute sticker oh my god--)
so, rather than setting resolutions, i tend to set themes for years after seeing this video by SCP Grey that offers it as an alternative. this year was the Year of Education - a year where i did my best to focus on my learning and educational pursuits. at the start of the year i set myself three semi-goals that could change; to do my Master's in Arts, to keep learning Japanese, and to learn corsetmaking techniques.
i wound up re-joining my university in the middle of the year to do my Honours in Creative Industries, focusing on adapting social deduction games and their game theories into the design of a narrative. i'm a little behind on the narrative itself, but the articles i've read and the definitely-research-and-not-a-thinly-veiled-excuse-to-play-games have both been fascinating for me, both in how much theory is kind of just ableist bonkers nonsense and what thin bits of truth are actually present (in all people, deception requires more cognitive thought; there's usually either scriptedness or a very slight delay when someone's trying to deceive - which proved useful when i finally watched roblox_oof.mp3 and noticed both in mister tallarico's behaviour).
my education with japanese fell by the wayside - i got burned out trying to keep up my streak with moving house yet again, and just kind of did the bare minimum to keep up the streak and stay in the diamond league. i think some of my basics have gotten a bit stronger, but that's all.
with that said, i learned a lot more about making clothes over the course of the year! admittedly, i still struggle with making a skirt fit correctly (it is either severely too big for me even with elastic in the back, or just small enough to be uncomfortable in day-to-day wear) but i think i've created a bodice block that fits close enough. i've also kind of fallen in love with a second hand place sort-of near my house that sells a lot of vintage and second-hand fabrics for cheap, which is really useful as a seamstress living on unemployment who'd like to make All Of The Things. i did also make a corset this year, but aside from the busk, it used some really shoddy materials - i accidentally made the lining layer out of broadcloth rather than twill or herringbone and the outer layer was a polyester brocade and a polyester waist tape, meaning the entire thing was just. the itchiest fucking thing in the universe. (and i was wearing an underlayer, it didn't do much to help). i have materials to remake it, i've just been unsure how to go about it.
so that's been my year (alongside obscene amounts of baldur's gate 3). onto 2024 and the goals there!

I found an organization called the Indigenous Coalition for Israel, which looks pretty good, but it’s apparently an international Christian initiative according to the website. Should I distrust this as an Evangelical ploy or something?
Also, I learned about it from an article on Tablet, which is a pretty good Jewish news site generally but they often go a little crazy (they had one article about how evil the trans rights movement was from a token cis gay guy who I could find no other writing credits from so he might not even be real (the article is melodramatically called “The Great Transitioning”) and I watched a talk from one of papers’ leaders and he said because of antisemtism on campuses, Jews shouldn’t go to college)
Tablet is wildly, embarrassingly erratic. They've had a lot of good commentary from respectable authors like Matti Friedman, Dara Horn, and Phyllis Chesler, but they also platform absolute far-right wackos who insist Q is real, hydroxychloroquine is better than vaccines, and environmentalists are pussies. They did apologize for their "Harvey Weinstein is a particularly Jewish kind of rapist" article, but it is still on their site. Just this very week they published a propagandistic profile of RFK Jr. that went all-in on his anti-vaxxism. In like 2015-16 I was comfortable citing Tablet as a source in mixed company, but now I often hesitate. I'll sometimes still post their better articles here, but I usually first check to see if someone less crankish has covered the topic.
And that ambivalence is on-topic for the Indigenous Coalition for Israel, which seems to be a non-proselytizing, non-apocalyptic Christian / Maori philosemitic group based in New Zealand. I've seen a lot of their op-eds around, including in Israeli papers, and most of what they write about that topic is a good match for what I already believe. As a concept, it is very beneficial to counter the bullshit narrative that Jews are white colonizers, indigenous to nowhere, and that the fight against Zionism is the same as getting European rulers out of Vietnam and Zimbabwe and whatever. Unfortunately, their founder seems to be a TERF. I don't have the heart to search back much further through her Twitter feed for examples before the Posie Parker thing. Any concepts that ICFI articulated that happened to be positive and good for Jews and Zionism were already true before and regardless of ICFI's involvement. If they are not safe allies for LGBT Jews, we don't need to settle for them as allies at all.

So I've been seeing a lot of boycott the new hogwarts game (honestly I don't care enough to look it up atm, but if youve spent even 5min on tumblr you know what I'm talk about.) and I wanted to talk about it.
Now these opinions are probably going to be a little shocking, but please bare with me and give this some thought before you just respond.
Jk has already stated how she funds anti-trans orgs with the money she has earned from HP. And that is not okay, I hate that she does that.
But
I think the thing that really grinds my gears is that ppl on this website are sitting here and acting like Terf-queen rowling and chickfila are the only two conservative piggy banks that bank roll this kind of shit.
They're not
In fact according to this article, the top 5 companies to donate money to politicians to vote for anti-lgbt laws between 2015-2021 were
AT&T
GM
Anheuser-Busch
The Coca-Cola Company
NBCUniversal
Now, do you have to boycott these companies? You can if you want to. Thats your decision.
I could go on and on about the never ending spiral of, but what about what X company supports. What does company Y do?
The reality is this is a never ending cycle. An endless rabbit hole if you will.
Boycotting can be an effective form of activism. But boycotting a billionaire who's still earning royalties, won't get you very far.
If you guys are this passionate about this stuff then get involved with your local lgbt community. It also would hurt to get involved with your local goverment. Go to city council meetings, be apart of the community, help advocate for lgbt rights.

Why do people care about what a creator does if they like the stuff they have made?
This is a difficult question to answer. It depends on the context, typically on a case-by-case basis.
For example, Rowling is a Terf; so she's been transphobic. She's also lied to her audience and has lost her touch in writing over the years. She's an extremely rich woman and a popular one at that, which means she can use her platform and money towards transphobia; just like the FNAF creator, Scott Cawthon. Scott donated thousands upon thousands of dollars to Donald Trump's campaign and is also pro-life; meaning this guy used a good portion of FNAF money towards a political campaign over who has influence over the USA Government.
Disney Company had sent $100K+ to Republican Parties in Florida, a party that managed to pass a "Don't Say Gay" Bill to prevent schools from teaching about LGBTQ+; and supports the anti-abortion bill, which I hate to remind people, Abortion is no longer protected federally because Roe vs Wade was overturned, and several women and their doctors have been tracked, harassed, arrested, and jailed for it.
But bear in mind, that there is no ethical consumption under capitalism. Disney is a monopoly that controls nearly the entire entertainment industry. Rowling probably has contracts with Warner Bros, and Warner Bros has theme parks, books, and all sorts of Harry Potter-themed stuff that has been deeply ingrained into people's childhoods, which means Rowling was already influential and rich prior to her controversy; and parents and children will always consume Harry Potter content, regardless of a Rowling Cancel Post.
Scott Cawthon passed off FNAF to other people due to his cancellation (for the best, but it's unfortunate his family suffered death threats) But he still spent thousands of, basically, children's money on a political party that doesn't have their best interest in mind.
Now Vivziepop's allegations are much smaller in comparison. Some creators get a big head with all the "THIS SHOW IS PERFECT!" "YOU GOT ME OUT OF MY DEPRESSION I LOVE YOU GUYS" "YOU GUYS SERIOUSLY SAVED ME" "YOU GUYS ARE GENIUSES!" and tend to develop a sense of narcissism, and slowly become awful people towards their fellow coworkers like Ellen Degeneres did.
This is important because if anyone from the fanbase were hired since this is an indie studio, they could be taken advantage of or shocked when they learn how messy the studio is or how poorly fellow employees are treated by the person everyone worshipped.
This all being said though, cancel culture typically doesn't work. A lot of people that 'messed up' are still very much around and still vastly successful.
Some people try to take a "moral high ground" and chastise and harass people who consume content that originated from someone who has been "canceled", which isn't fair. Just because you like the Harry Potter franchise does not mean you're a transphobe. That's not logical. I've seen people claim they've pirated or got all their Harry Potter media second hand and they're STILL harassed, which is ridiculous.
And a bigger reality is, (Scott Cawthon being the exception) a lot of the content is not only made by canceled creators. Harry Potter was made crazy popular through the movies thanks to the actors, directors, and music directors. Are all those people transphobic because of association? Absolutely not. So fans should not be either. Especially if they're pirating, which is a strike against financially supporting these canceled people so they can't use your money for shady shit.
So to answer your question, people care about what a creator does because creators have power, and need to be kinder and smarter towards their fellow employees and fans. JK Rowling being a transphobe is a major jab at every trans Harry Potter fan. Scott Cawthon supporting pro-life is a jab at 80% of the FNAF female fanbase. (It's not even just the fanbase, their power extends to political stuff outside their creations, so its a major jab towards trans people, women, gays, POC, etc )
Vivziepop mistreating her employees makes her a bad boss, and potentially, a bad person. It makes Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel fans feel awkward about enjoying, supporting, and praising a show while some of the people who made it are suffering behind the scenes.
Some of the employees are not suffering behind the scenes, they may be on Viv's favoritism list or just don't have too much contact or trouble with her, and they do get paid and gain traction and experience through Spindlehorse, and make great connections, and they may be great people in comparison.
So... shrug? How and why you support or consume a creator, company, or franchise is up to you, and you alone. Weigh your morals and decide for yourself.

I saw your reblog on my blazed post.
I know that JKR and the staff of Hogwarts Legacy are transphobic, but you told me that the VA for Bayonetta was a Terf?
I was not aware , can you tell me more details.
Its disappointing to find out more and more individuals that one used to respect turned out to be very bad people.
Hey! I'm sorry this took me so long to respond to.
By no means at all am I saying not to enjoy or play the games because as far as I know Hellena Taylor does not speak for the whole company. She has however said a couple of things that are very terf like.
Tumblr media
This one speaks for itself I feel..
Tumblr media
She openly supports the blue lives matter movement.
Tumblr media
And she is anti-choice.
I dont think that affects the playability of the game since not only was she already payed, she's since been replaced.
If any of this is taken out of context or ive just completely misunderstood lemme know.

Yes, it is possible for men to be victims of abuse, particularly because men are seen as "tougher" and less easy to hurt so it's "okay" and "not a big deal" and similar bullshit. But the Depp/Heard case was not an example of that. He assaulted her several times, and when he got hurt it was from her defending herself once. Please, look at the evidence presented in the case - I know it's very, very easy to just assume you know what it is from all the media attention, but that's because there's a whole lot of PR spinning going on, mostly in Depp's favor. There are male abuse victims in need of championing out there, but framing Depp as one of them will ruin any attempt to do so effectively.
Mate, seriously? Don't subscribe to that terf shit. PR MY ASS. Did you even watch the trial at all? Me and my friends have seen it, people documenting it for real. You can go back and watch whatever streamer dude who clipped it on youtube for fucks sake.
And fyi, most articles doubled down on defending amber heard. PR???? How about all the articles that are spinning the narrative.
She lied, guilt tripped, withheld drugs from him when he was on recovery, so much he self harmed so the pain would stop. She cut off his finger, shat in his bed, and did everything in her power to control and manipulate him. And he defended her, because many abuse victims do defend their abuser, because they're being emotionally manipulated.
All this shit about "PR spun the narrative", is literally come out after the court case came to a conclusion, while I've seen millions of articles defending Amber Heard all throughout the court case. Did you even know she committed prejury? That she lied straight up?? Please look at the facts instead. Amber Heard is not the victim you think she is. She is an abuser. And I'm not going to defend a woman, just because she's a woman.
I'm not even a man, I was afab. My post was about how so many people, including many queer people, get abused by woman. But you see one single part of that, and go for it.
I am sincerely happy Johnny Depp won, and all this shit on tumblr is bullshit after the fact. If you need any more proof, I recommend you watch Moist Critical's video on it, or Ludwig's video on it. They explain it in a way that I agree with, Charlie more actually.
I am not defending Johnny out of bad faith. There's an article going around that people believe Amber got sued for, that's not the article because it doesn't mention Johnny within it. Plus Amber admitted she lied in court.
Also? The UK case? Yknow, the one against The Sun? Yeah that company is extremely transphobic, and have done this behavior before. So I don't trust a word they say regardless. How dare anyone think that they're reputable in any way. They're so horrible that they show up red on shinigami eyes.
I don't believe any rad fem rhetoric on this case for a second. I was gonna answer this privately, but it needs to be said. Any more asks sent to me about this "PR" situation will be ignored. This is all I need to say on this.
I sure as hell don't trust people who make those posts. I saw one in my recommended last night, and just as I suspected, everyone reblogging that was supporting a terf. There were several *reblogged from (someone with rad in their name)* and "i hate men" and "anti-johnny depp" which was previously something to look out for to show who's a terf and who's not.
Real victims support Johnny and people mad that a woman lost, are fucking idiots.
