The Racing to Reading Tag

Thanks to @sapphirecastles for tagging me! I love reading, so this was a lot of fun to write! But also very hard, I mean I have like 200 favourite books 😅

1. Warm Up: A book that stretches your mind: “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Hands down the best book I’ve ever read. The magic of it is in how Marquez mixes reality with fantasy (called magical realism) creating a fantastical image of the small town Macondo and its inhabitants. As a person deeply in love with the South American culture I loved this book so so much because it authentically transports the feelings and way life of Colombia. Also, Spanish is the best language to talk emotions and if you can, read this book in Spanish.

2. Start Line: What’s a book that you started but never finished? “Successor’s promise” from the “Millenniums Rule” trilogy by Trudi Canavan. Had it with me while travelling and it got stolen... 🙈 Still need to buy it again and finish the trilogy. I also really liked Trudi Canavans “ Age of the Five” trilogy. The worlds she creates are so full of detail...!

3. Sprint: A book you read really quickly: “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood. So many feelings... I just couldn’t put it down for a whole day. I was suffering with Offred (or Desfred as I read it in German), got angry at every man in existence and was shocked by how realistic the plot seemed sometimes. There are reasons why I am a feminist and this book may be one of them. (No, not all men are assholes/suppressing women/violators etc, but some are, and some is enough to need to do something against it, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.)

4. Marathon: What’s your favourite long book?: Ok, define long... “A Short History of Nearly Everything” by Bill Bryson was 672 pages and was a lot of fun to read. It talks about, well, everything: from the big bang to the rise of human civilisations he covers it all. It’s a nice mix of popular science (geography, particle physics, genetics, chemistry...) paired with interesting humorous stories about some nerdy scientists. Loved it!👩🏽‍🔬

6. Finish Line: A book you were proud to finish: “A Brief History of Time” by Steven Hawking. As someone that failed physics and was convinced to never understand anything about it, I was proud to have somehow found the motivation to read this book. I even thought I understood some of the concepts, but that was delusional haha. But I liked reading it, and I think I got an idea of how for some people physics can be fun or beautiful.💫

7. Gold Medal: Best book you’ve read during a readathon: Never did a readathon, but had to read many books for high-school exams in german, spanish and french. The best was probably “The Pianist” by Władysław Szpilman. Very depressing but impressive.

8. Participation Ribbon: An underrated book you wish got more attention: “Poor Economics: A Radical Rethinking of the Way to Fight Global Poverty” by Abhijit V. Banerjee and Esther Duflo. This book made me think a lot. Why are poor people poor and why is it so hard to escape poverty? With many examples from their own research the authors try to answer these questions and show how poor people think and make decisions. Everyone should read this and maybe get rid of some prejudice. 

Whoever wants to do this is invited, I’m always on a hunt for new books to read!
