Nazi use of the term "evacuation" to mean "mass slaughter"
I don't like to fear-monger. I don't want to make people think this genocide could get much worse, but as someone with some knowledge of the Nazis and the Holocaust I am compelled to say that this "evacuation" speak is straight-up Holocaust language.
After Israel forced Gazans to flee to Rafah, Netanyahu is now ordering the "evacuation" of Palestinians from Rafah. This was after Israel refused a ceasefire.
The Wannsee Conference was held in 1942 to address the "Jewish Question" (plans for genocide). The Holocaust, the mass murder of Jews, disabled people, Romani, Poles, Ukrainians, LGBT people, Jehovah's Witnesses, communists, and other groups the Nazis considered inferior, was already ongoing, but 1942 was when the plans for huge-scale massive death was planned. The mass extermination, often termed "evacuation" of European Jews was planned at this conference.
Link to the Wannsee Conference minutes, translated into English. They are a summary, not verbatim, so are quite short. Keyword search "evacuation" and "evacuate": http://www.holocaustresearchproject.org/holoprelude/Wannsee/wanseeminutes.html
Another source talking about the language of "evacuation" used to mean "extermination" in Nazi Germany:
"Evacuated to Death: The Lexicon, Concept, and Practice of Mobility in the Nazi Deportation and Killing Machine" https://doi.org/10.1080/24694452.2019.1633904
Quote from the article's author, Peter Adey:
"As we have seen, evacuation was used inconsistently as a set of mobile practices. Death was almost always close behind, but it is important that we consider that the purpose and process also bound evacuation together with its different versions. The practices employed by the Nazi evacuations of the Jews to killing centers ran in parallel to the evacuation measures identified for [non-Jewish] Germans."
Thus Netanyahu can speak of evacuating Jewish Israelis and evacuating Palestinians and mean hugely different things.
It's a difficult watch and perhaps not useful viewing at this time, but the English-language dramatization of the Wannsee Conference "Conspiracy" explores this quite a lot, repeatedly having the Nazi leaders use the phrase "evacuate" in place of "mass slaughter." (I have a copy if anyone wants--be warned it is a very difficult watch.)

The Iasi Pogrom
The titles of this post is “The Iasi Pogrom” , but I am starting with a different event. It is important to put the Iasi Pogrom in a wider context. It will be a long read, but it is such an important subject that I feel compelled to be as detailed as possible. Approximately 7 months after the Iasi pogrom, on January 20 1942, Reinhard Heydrich, chief of the Reich Security Main Office , summons a…

I just finished watching Die Wannseekonferenz (1984) and Conspiracy (2001) back to back.
While i get that that the latter is a lot more accessible to american audiences, i never really got into it. It's just so concerned with casting good and bad guys for the audience to relate to, constantly mentions and compares things to americas political situation and modern us values, and it has a surprisingly large amount of clumsy exposition.
While the performances of the actors are really good, the acting style favoured by this picture is is very dramatic and, in it's manners VERY british. I suppose that just reads as european to americans.
But the dramatic deliveries, the pregnant pauses, they take so much away from what made that historical event so terrifyng. These people argued, in a business meeting, about the beurocratic, legal and economic realitys of the final solution, that was already in progress.
The Wannseekonferenz (1984) gives you limited information at the beginning, but immidietly creates an atmosphere of comradery, where the only issue they have with each other, is wagering whose rank and jurisdiction matters more. This is continued in the meeting itself; it's a mind numbing logistics discussion where half the fights are just about who has what jurisdiction and everyone just trying to make it so their personal jobs will look especially well done.
It's only as the meeting progresses, and the audience slowly get's the subject and the extent of what is being discussed, that the horror sets in. Only then do they introduce the more personal stakes of some characters, only then some phylosophical questions enter in the form of law discussions.
I'm certain the Conspiracy is a lot more entertaining to casually watch, but if you are really interested what "banality of evil" can look like, i'd highly recommend Die Wannseekonferenz. It's currently on Youtube.

Reinhard Heydrich
Tumblr media
These are some facts and curiosities about Reinhard Heydrich:
He was born on the 7 March 1904 in Halle.
He was often mocked in his youth as Moses Handel, as it was rumored that he had Jewish ancestors, but it was never proven.
Both his parents were passionate about music and gave birth to a lifelong passion for the violin in their son.
In 1922 he entered the navy, at the naval academy in Kiel but he was discharged because, after having had an affair with the daughter of one of his superiors, he abandoned her for a younger woman.
He join the Nazis in 1931 when Himmler offered him to be the head of the SD, the segret service in the SS. He was given that position because Himmler was impressed by his Aryan appearence, self- assurance and thorough approach to the assigniment.
At the time he wasn’t a big shoot in the Nazis: he worked in a small office and he didn’t gain many money.
After Adolf Hitler took power in 1933, Heydrich was placed in command of the Gestapo in 1934 and dealt with those organizations and people who could harm the Nazi cause.
He himself later organized the attack on the Gleiwitz radio station, called "Operation Himmler", which started the Second World War.
On 20 January 1942 Heydrich held the sadly famous conference in Wannsee in which the "Final Solution of the Jewish question" was planned.
In December 1941 he became the protector of Bohemia and Moravia, and he held a fight against the Czech resistance.
Heydrich became the ‘’de facto’’dictator of the area, ordering repression and persecution,so much  that he earned the nickname The Executioner of Prague (Der Henker von Prag).
On 27 May 1942 a commando composed of members of the Czechoslovakian army in exile, trained by the British SOE made an attempt on Heydrich's life. He died on the 4th of June 1942.
To avenge Heydrich, the Nazi murdered all 192 males over the age of 15 living in the village of Lidice, near Prague, and deported all the women and children. Subsequently, all the buildings were burned, and the rubble was then removed to definitively erase the place from the geographical maps.
"Operation Reinhard" was named after Heydrich, the plan for the construction of the first three German extermination camps: Treblinka, Sobibór and Bełżec.
He was a great sport man: he like fancing and he was a horseman.
He cared about his victims as much as we care about the ant colonies in our yards
He open a bordel
He married Lina Von Osten and they had four children:
Klaus Heydrich ( 1933-1943)
Heider Heydrich (1934-)
Silke Heydrich ( 1939-)
Marte Heydrich ( 1942-)

berlin-wannsee station // berlin wannsee
architect: richard brademanns
completion: 1928
when you visit berlin-wannsee station, you feel like you've stepped right back into the twenties. the station is very well preserved and well worth seeing. and a starting point into a very oppressive and dark, historical environment which, with the memorial and educational site haus der wannsee konferenz (house of the wannsee conference), sheds light on the human crime of the shoa which was finally initiated here with the wannsee conference.

First off, when Nate Mann loses the Emmy to everyone on White Lotus this year, we riot.
Second, Tim Van Patten probably got the shot of the series, with Bucky raising a tattered American flag over the camp as the the other POWs wave their own nations' flags, finally freed from under jackbooted terror.
Third, this series does somewhat repeat the sins of the father, in that, like Webster scolding Liebgott when he goes after the commandant and Liebgott being forced to translate the German surrender to show that the German army, too, was a band of brothers, this episode suddenly has a moment of humanity between a German officer and the Jewish soldier he's forcing to march, possibly to his death (while many Jews were being marched to their actual deaths across Europe as the Allies closed in on the camps). I'm not sure if Jewish anger is too unpalatable, but please note that we're like two scenes away from Rosie discovering the dead prisoners and talking to a man whose entire family has been shot and dumped in a mass grave (pay extra attention to where that man says he's going to go now that he's been freed! If you know your history, that man has a long and quite impossible road ahead of him.) I've long been fascinated by the World War II novel, written as it was by Jewish veterans, as my grandfathers both served - and a great-aunt! - but Band of Brothers holds an important place for me because my great-uncle was a member of the 82nd Airborne. He essentially journeyed their journey, from Normandy to the liberation of the camps. But what I only learned, right before he passed, is that while he was occupying Berlin, the moment that gave him the most satisfaction was sitting on a bench that had once been forbidden to Jews. For once, it would be something if these shows let their Jewish fighters have that experience.
Fourth, the show doesn't mention it, but the raid in which Rosie was shot down actually resulted in the death of Roland Friesler, attendee of the Wannsee Conference and the man who shaped the court system in Nazi Germany into an executioner's chamber.
Fifth, this show may think Austin Butler and Callum Turner are its central characters, but I waited ten years to see Robert Rosenthal on screen and I couldn't have asked for more. See above re: Nate Mann deserving all the awards. When his hand touches the wall of the barracks...chills.

Holocaust letters
This is just my opinion and there is no scientific research done for this, at least not as far as I am aware, but I think the Holocaust can be categorized as an organised randomness. On a large scale the industrialized murder of millions was organized in an efficient way, however on smaller scales the treatment of mainly Jews, by the Nazis, was often quite random. There are several examples…

A non-verbal girl with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, a stomach feeding tube, and a motorized wheelchair. The greatest joy her parents could give her was taking her to concerts, so she could dance in her chair.
Millions of people worldwide now feel "liberated" from her.
Many of those people are Americans and Europeans, who have advanced degrees from the best colleges in the world, and swear their side is the one based on tolerance, acceptance, and protecting those with no power.
Nazi ideology caught on quickest through universities and professions. Nearly all the participants at the Wannsee Conference were lawyers. And they did a test-run on their genocide of the Jews by first exterminating the disabled.
In 2015, the Israeli and Iranian teams for the Special Olympics wound up sharing the same plane and becoming friends.
If that happened again, Iran would shoot the plane down and kill them all. And millions worldwide would again feel "liberated."
I like to think of Ruth's happiness, and her father's relief and pride, when she danced in her chair. I am glad they were able to go to concerts. The world should have more places where Ruth Peretz could joyously live her life.
It should have no place for the lives of her killers or their supporters. Any of them. Anywhere.

Wannsee
Julia Knobloch
Sheep clouds and sandy light, white sails and motor boats
This summer escape was built in 1907
for the working class of Berlin, who could not afford the Baltic Sea
Then and now a crowded beach
young women posing in deck chairs
Pine cones, yellow flowers
soda fizzing red and green in leafy shadows
One afternoon we plowed, arms hooked, through shallow water
the ferry to Peacock Island in the distance
reed grass rustling in the sudden silence
That’s how you find a drowned body
the lifeguard explained
by marching as one long chain of humans
The loudspeaker blared
and I thought of the cheery post-war tune
sung by an eight-year old, “The Little Cornelia,”
about children riding their bikes out to Wannsee
underneath a canopy of pines and patches of blue sky
The song didn’t exist in 1942, neither did little Cornelia
and it was January
the beach across the lake closed for the season
but the view and shoreline were the same —
Did any of them let their mind wander to the summer ahead
to riding their bikes through the forest
running into the cool, soft Wannsee
lifting their daughter up into the air, water dripping from her blond curls?
