#where's that post that's like 'do you support her if she's a solid 3' I want to rb it again

genuinely a lot of you need to sit the fuck down and think about whether you actually support transfeminine people or you're just chasers. cause a lot of this site's support seems to be "uwu fuck me big strong dommy mommy" "I want a sexy trans goth gf so bad" etc etc and it's so gross. like i dont think attraction the inherent problem here or anything but when every single post asking "do you actually support trans women/transfeminine ppl?" has some chucklefuck in the notes going "haha yeah, I support her ON TOP OF ME!" it gets really obvious that you do not actually know how to support them without sexualizing them. and that's. really incredibly not okay.

MOOOREE SHAPES!!!!!!!!!
Since the last one was so fun I thought I would do another!
ASL shapes post
I’m begging and pleading you to look at Keep Reading 👇
Shape language is defined as “a concept used in art and animation to communicate meaning based on shapes we are familiar with” (source). This concept uses circles, triangles, and squares to convey an idea of the “personality” of the design without using any words.
In designs, using circles and rounded edges in your silhouette and detailing gives the design a soft and squishy look. They tend to be harmless, approachable, or changeable.
Designs using squares gives the design a solid, sturdy, and strong look. They are supportive, reliable, and inflexible
Lastly, triangle designs are sharp and directional. They are dynamic, dangerous, and unpredictable.
Tumblr media
Here are the main silhouettes I used! I'll just go down the list here since theres so many of them
(edit from me after writing all of this down: ✨Drinking game!✨ take a shot everytime i say either square or rectangle. You'll be dead by the end. Anyway, enjoy!)
⚔️: Even in his base design, Zoro is essentially a giant rectangle. He's stable, reliable, and supportive. but even though he is all that, i think he definately deserves some triangle imagry so i tried to squeak one in there.
🍊:Nami is her own breed of triangle. She's not unpredictable, per say,, just very very hostile. and I love her for that. but she is also very reliable, she has to be for her job. So i award her 2 triangles and a square
🌱: you may notice a trend by now that everyone has a square. that's because every one of the straw hats are all hella reliable, and thats not excluding Usopp. Even though he feels like he's not cut out for the awful situations he's often in, he somehow always squeezes by victorious. But also, he is friend shaped. so he gets 2 circles and a square.
🍳: Similarly to Zoro, Sanji is also just a gigantic square. His torso is the main box, but his les are always in a position of stability, closely resembling a square. But also, his head is soft and round, portraying his kindness. As such i award him with two squares and a box-y circle.
🩺: just.. i mean just look at any picture of base chopper. HES JUST A GIANT CIRCLE. He got a big ol' noggin, a round body, and two little stick legs. he deserves a square though, so I gave him a square for his feets.
🔎: Robin has the same shape layout as Sanji. She is also very reliable and very kind. where she differs though is that she still has so much mystery to her, that i still tried to incorporate triangles as smaller details in her design. Two rectangles, a circle, and many small triangles. She has the range.
🛠️:Franky is a gigantic square with almost no non-square angles to him. he has his shoulders, his glasses, and his crotch that are not quadrilateral and of course that signifies how reliable and stable he is. Cant knock this cat over. he gets 3 squares.
🎸: Brook was a bit hard to pick which shape would be his majority, so I didn't. He got all of them. He's polite and kind, but also mischievous and full of surprises. And of course. Square attributes. one square one circle and one triangle.
🌊: For Jinbe, I... yes, the guy is a gigantic square, but also he's just kinda always doin shit that I don't expect him to do, so i think he also deserves a triangle. I dont know how i would add a third shape in him since his gigantic square body takes up the majority of his figure, so i just used two. One square, and one triangle.
And that just about covers all of them! if you read all this, thank you so much for listening to my ramblings!

Lessons on flirting
Tumblr media
Fandom: XMen
Pairing:   Kurt Wagner x fem!reader
Characters mentioned: Scott Summers, Jean Grey, Peter Maximoff
Used Pronouns: (she/her)
Warnings: none
Request: yes
Part: 1/3
A/N: I made an exception and did a fem!reader one since it was requested like that. I will eventually upload a gn!reader version
P.S.: I decided to split the request into 3 because I wanted to post something since it’s taking longer than promised :’)
Tumblr media
Summary: Kurt has a crush on one of the best fighters in the institute, but doesn’t know how to approach the situation. Thank goodness that Peter and his friends are there to support him.
Word Count: 1k
Tumblr media
“I did not get my ass whooped.” Scott walked between Jean and Kurt, trying to defend himself from Jean’s accusations.
“Of course not. How could you ever? We all know how strong the great Scott Summers is.” Scott would have felt flattered by such a response if it weren’t for the sarcasm behind her words.
“Yeah, yeah. Keep making fun of me. As if you had done it better,” he said eyeing the ice pack Jean pressed to her shoulder, only gaining a slight strong nudge on his bruised arm.
Kurt couldn’t help but snicker at their bickering. They had been on it since their last class. The topic had been self-defence. The catch: The use of powers was strictly prohibited. This type of class had become more frequent since the rumours of a new power suppressant circulating in the black market started. The professor wanted all students to be able to defend themselves, with and without powers.
“You sure can laugh,” Scott glanced at Kurt. “We aren’t allowed to use our powers, but you still can use your tail to fight.”
Kurt smiled proudly and swung his tail from side to side, mocking him even further.
“These classes are stupid. I have literal lasers for eyes. I can fry anyone even miles away from me. Why should I train in close combat if no one can get close to me anyway?” Scott let himself fall on the couch, resting his feet on the table in front of him. Jean already knew it was his frustration talking. They all had been lectured enough to understand why such classes were necessary.
Jean followed Scott’s lead and made herself comfortable beside him. Kurt leaned against the armrest of the couch.
“He indeed has an advantage, but I wasn’t expecting him to be that good.” She directed her eyes toward Kurt “You put up a pretty good fight against her, considering she is top of the class,” said Jean approvingly.
Kurt’s eyes suddenly lit up, and he turned toward them.
It was clear to him who she was talking about.
You hadn’t been in the institute for long but you managed to make a name for yourself right away. You hadn’t lost a spar in the self-defence class until now, making you one of the strongest fighters in the class.
“But how come she’s so strong? Does she have enhanced strength or something?” asked Scott raising an eyebrow.
“No. Her power is to transform drawings into solid objects,” Kurt responded.
Jean nodded and added, “I saw one of the spars she had with an older student. She pulled out a literal sword from the tattoo on her arm and beat his ass right in front of everyone. But do you know why she really is so strong?” Scott looked up at Jean’s questions with expectancy. “It’s because she is not a couch potato. Unlike you, Scott”
Scott threw a pillow at her, which she quickly stopped with her telekinetic powers.
The conversation went on with more complaints and remarks about the self-defence classes.
Kurt's mind drifted away, thinking of today’s class. More specifically the spar you had with him.
The first time he met you was in the self-defence class where he has been witness to your many wins. He has seen how graciously you can move and how powerful every single punch of yours is.
His admiration for you grew further and further from that day on. Not only because of your abilities but also because you remained humble and kind instead of letting your accomplishments get to your head. You were someone Kurt looked up to because you didn’t simply knock your opponent down. You gave hints and advice on what the correct stance is, how to throw a proper punch and so on. After every spar, you helped your opponent up and cheered them up like a football team’s coach would do. And you did exactly the same thing with Kurt after sparring with him.
He had lasted longer than the majority of the students you had gone against, but you still managed to make him eat dust. He lay on the ground as you approached to lend a hand. Kurt noticed your hand and was about to accept your help, but then hesitated. He was sure you would feel uncomfortable, considering Kurt’s unusual handshape. But to his surprise, you grabbed his hand and pulled him onto his feet. He felt his cheek burn when he noticed the short distance you had between each other, but you kept your grip on his hand. The words you said stuck to Kurt like glue: “That was amazing. Just as expected. We have to repeat this sometime soon”. That along with your beautiful, bright smile made his heart beat unusually fast.
“Earth to lover boy, are you listening?”
Kurt turned his head toward Scott and Jean. Both were staring at him with sneaky smiles on their faces.
“Entschuldigung?”, asked Kurt clearly confused.
Jean and Scott exchanged glances in amusement.
“You’ve been smiling like an idiot since we mentioned her”, Jean said raising her eyebrows.
Kurt felt his cheeks grow hotter. “Oh, I was thinking of- you know, class- I mean-”
“Dude, it’s so clear you have a crush on her. You drool every time she is near,” Scott said rolling his eyes.
“It’s not like-”
“You have a crush on her” Kurt yelped at the sudden presence behind him, teleporting onto the spot between Jean and Scott on the couch on reflex. “Like, totally obvious” Quicksilver took a long sip from his apple juice, only to look disgusted at it. “What’s the expiration date on this?”
“I didn’t- I didn’t realise.” Kurt looked worryingly at Peter. “Do you think she noticed? Oh no, what if I weirded her out?”
“Well, only one way to find out.”
Everyone stared at Peter expectantly as he sipped his juice with risen eyebrows.

Hi if your still taking requests the can I ask for an aged up story about reader x neteyam or Reader x Ao’nung fic where they are in a secret relationship and an altercation happens between their families and during it or after it is revealed that the reader is pregnant (no smut if ur uncomfortable with it) thus revealing their relationship. Plz hurt comfort is my genre as of late.
The reader is a Sully kid if it’s reader x Ao’nung and if it’s x Neteyam then she is Ronal and Tonowari child.
Of course, you ask for it and you must have it! I love this idea! I hope you like it and maybe I'll do a part two where we continue with the dinner?? We shall see if people enjoy it! (Also I did not take the Sully kid into consideration so I'm sorry if that shows)
I named it: Secret Families
Ps: Thank you for your support!
┍━━━━━»•» 🌺 «•«━┑
Pairing: Aonung x reader
Word Count: 3.8k
A/N: This is my second post of the week so we shall see you next week. Thank you all for your support. I'm setting up tag lists for the x reader series now so if you want to be part of my avatar x reader tag list, reach out, don't be scared! <3
Tumblr media
Ronal was a suspicious woman; not much went under her radar for very long, and her children knew that, yet they still did everything they could to keep their little secrets under wraps.
Aonung was no different, well apart from the fact that the nature of his secret would have had more severe repercussions than any profound dark secret his sister was harboring.
To the clan, you and Aonung were the worst enemies since a young age. They all thought that Aonung had  matured dramatically over the years to prepare himself for the role of Olo'eyktan. Still, they thought he still hadn't managed to put out the petty fire you ignited in him whenever you walked past with your usual saunter, making him want to roll his eyes so hard they fell out of his head.
But in private, far beyond the gaze of curious eyes, you two were mates before the great mother in an immortal bond with one another.
The only people who knew about your relationship were yourselves, and while a few amongst your friends had suspicions that you two had feelings for each other, none of them knew how deep the feelings went.
One afternoon after you finished all your required chores for Ronal, who was training you to be a healer, she invited you to dinner the following evening. You nervously agreed while trying not to register any red flags to her attention as you quickly excused yourself so you could get home to your pod before nightfall.
As you wandered back to your quarters, your mind returned to an anxiety that had popped up a few weeks ago, slowly turning from an obsessed overthought to a life-changing reality.
You were pregnant.
You had been a few weeks late on your cycle, so when Ronal left to give her mate his lunch, you quickly ran a test, and it came back with all the signs for positive.
As soon as the herbal mixture had turned a soft blue which confirmed your doubts, a million questions raced through your mind, and now that you had time alone, you dug back into the pile with fresh eyes.
How would you tell Aonung? He had never mentioned wanting kids, as you were both so young. He hadn't even become chief yet, so you highly doubted he wanted to settle down and start a family just yet. He would surely take the news badly.
Would you keep it? You were still at a stage where you knew a few herbal concoctions that would abort the embryo from your system, and you could do so without telling anyone. It would be like it never happened.
Your thoughts were interrupted when you crashed into a solid chest, you stumbled back a bit, but two hands gripped your forearms to steady you.
You looked up, and as if he had heard your thoughts and come running to speak with you, Aonung was there with his usual smirk. He restrained himself to only give you in private.
"What's the rush, servant girl?" He asked while using the affectionate nickname he had given to you years ago from the job that required you to spend a lot of time running after his mother without questioning her.
Usually, you would have smirked at him and spat out an insult, but instead, you could feel the anxiety clog your throat, and you stuck your thumb between your teeth, nervously nibbling on it to stop the gasps of air you knew you would let out without the block.
His comedic attitude dropped, and he immediately dropped his height a little to try and look into your eyes.
"Hey, hey, hey, what's wrong?" His voice was quiet and soft as his eyes darted around to make sure nobody was around so he could quickly pull you to his chest.
You didn't know the tears had formed in your eyes until Aonung noticed them slipping down your cheeks and pulled you into his cradle arms to silence you like a small child.
"You know my mother doesn't mean anything she says when she's angry!" His only logical conclusion as to why you could be crying on your way back from work was that it must have been his mother's temper.
Ronal had a tendency to slip up and call you some variation of 'incompetent' as she had done in the past to previous students.
"It's not that", you huffed as you hopelessly wiped one side of your face with your hand to try and rub away the tears.
"I have to talk to you about something", you whispered, still unable to believe what was currently growing in your womb. You pulled back from Aonung and watched as his face fell a bit.
Immediately his mind spiraled to think of the worst possibilities that could have happened. Had you been attacked? Were you sick? Had someone been hurt? Did someone find out about you two and not take it well?
As you saw him flicker from each of your eyes with a hurricane of unanswered questions brewing in his mind, you simply nodded toward your pod at the end of the pathway and led him to speak privately.
He ran after you and quickly unrolled the sail above your door so he could speak without fear of being overheard and having to deal with the emotional crisis of another person.
He watched you pace a hole in the floor for a few seconds, and then you turned sharply and pointed to the floor.
"I think it's best if you sit down", you could feel the air thicken as he resentfully took a seat on one knee while he leaned on the other.
The climate was humid and you could almost feel your mate's brain churning to keep up with his theories.
He was staring at you with his lisp pursed in confusion as you felt more tears form as you started pacing in front of him again.
You were terrified. Starting a family was a huge deal, and it took a lot of commitment, and you knew that with Aonung, you could raise a family together, but that was a fantasy you had toyed around with. Aonung would think it was too soon; you just knew it.
'He is your mate, and he will understand' your mind replayed the statement a few times when you felt like you were about to be crushed by a tsunami of doubt and indecision.
"Ma woman, you are scaring me. What is it?" His voice was soft, but you could tell by the way his hands were clenching into fists on his knee that he was worried for you.
"Aonung", you turned to him once more, letting the tears fall because you knew if you brushed them away, they would just be replaced by new ones. You wrung your hands out in each other, trying to find an outlet for your frustration.
"Promise me you won't be mad, we can talk about this, and we have plenty of options", you held out your hands in front of you to reimburse your statement with a miserable attempt at showing a strong front.
Aonung struck forward like a snake and grabbed your hands before returning to his previous posture. You felt his finger rub a circle over the back of your hand then his warm lips pressed themselves against your knuckles for a moment to let you gather yourself.
"I promise. Now tell me what happened. Has someone done something to you?" His protective flare couldn't help but be shown as your hands trembled in his.
You wanted to laugh at the awkward joke you could have made about the fact it was him who had done something to you, but you knew it was your brain trying to distract from the fear of letting the words spill into your real life because once you said these words you couldn't take them back.
"No, nothing like that…" You looked into his eyes, and everything felt so perfect at that moment, with you two basking in each other's company.
You thought back to the early days of your relationship and the nights you had spent together rendezvoused, visiting places you shouldn't have while cracking jokes. Aonung's eyes widened as you took deep breaths. Your daydreams then drifted to your daily shared glances behind people back's that had been filled with so much adoration. You couldn't stand to see that jeopardized.
"Your mother invited me to dinner tomorrow night", you felt the words claw out of your throat in battle with your mind that begged you to tell the truth but you weren't strong enough to tell him the news.
"Well, that's okay. She always does that to her students; why are you crying?" He was now utterly confused about why the dinner invite had caused such a visceral emotional outburst.
Your lips parted in bemusement as you tried to concoct a plausible reason as to why you would be so distressed.
"It was just a hard day", you slipped your hands from his grip, up his forearms, and slid onto your knees so he could hold you as you took deep breaths to get your bearings.
He pets your hair and gently shushes you while rocking back and forth. You clenched onto him and allowed yourself to be selfish for the moment, and you let his comfort about your decision to keep the secret from him wash over you.
You knew he wasn't convinced that what you said was a complete truth but he didn't push you any further on the matter, and you were very thankful for that.
You knew you would have to tell him eventually. Hiding a pregnancy could only go on for so long, but you decided you would give yourself a week to at least get yourself to a mental place where you could say the words aloud without having a fear of Aonung's rejection claw its way out.
Now all you had left to prepare your head for was dinner at Ronal and Tonowari's pod tomorrow.
The next day flew by all too quickly. The whole time, you felt Ronal's eyes on you as you rushed every chore that had to be done in her presence for fear you would crack or, worse, she would somehow sense your new medical condition.
You worked as quickly as possible, and when Ronal could find nothing left for you to do, she sent you home early and ordered you to prepare for the meal she would be hosting later that evening. So, you rushed home with the thoughts of your womb and the offering for your hosts that needed to be perfected, consuming your mind.
You brushed your hair and clipped on your finest bracelets and your most firm-fitting necklace, but nothing seemed to be able to be just right, and all you could think about was Aonung.
He had to be the first to know, it would only be fair, but you couldn't tell him, and you needed to speak with someone about it because this secret was eating you from the inside out.
"Hey", Aonung's voice made you jump, and you turned on the balls of your feet to see it was your mate, armed with his spear in hand, still damp from his hunting trip.
"What are you doing here!" You hissed as you pressed your hand against your heart, begging it to calm down.
Everything had you on edge; his presence only made your soul cry out with humiliation. He knew you were lying to him about something, yet he still tried to be there for you.
"Relax, everyone's gone home for dinner. I wanted to come to talk to you about something", he stepped further into your pod and closed the flap again, making sure you saw his eye-roll that teased your anxiety about being caught.
Your heart was beating so fast that it could have powered a storm, but you nodded with a nervous nip at your lip and allowed him to step closer to you.
Aonung's presence was consuming and sent a wave of peace over you as his touch gently caressed your face with one hand while the other slowly came to your waist and brushed against your stomach on its way to rest on your hip, which made your gaze turn white for a second as the fear swaddled you tightly.
He knew! He had to have found out from his mother. Of course, she would have known; she is Tsahik! She would have taken one look at your body and asked her son if you were mated with anybody, and Aonung would have fit two and two together.
"I want to tell my parent's about us tonight, after dinner", He slid his head into the side of your neck and kissed it softly. His sweet care for you, that often could have drowned you, was now suffocating.
"Okay", you managed to whimper out. He must know. Was it a fluke brush of his hand?
This was something he wanted, and you would do it. Maybe if you started out small with an announcement of your relationship, another announcement of a child wouldn't take such a toll on you.
"What is wrong? If you do not want to tell them, we can wait," he pulled back from you, his hands dropping to his sides. Your strange act confused him, you were always so outspoken, and he wondered why you had suddenly become so meek.
He knew something was misplaced in your relationship, and he would have left you to stew in your thoughts if it wasn't for the fact that you were starting to worry him with the way your body was handling the stress.
You had been skittish all yesterday evening, and he was worried. You seemed so pale and sickly. His mother had come up to him this afternoon and asked if he could go lightly with the playful teasing at dinner tonight as you were looking fragile, and it confined his doubts that something was grievously wrong.
"No, It's not that, I just can't tell you", you whispered, turning away from him to busy yourself with picking out a hairpiece to curl into your hair.
"You can tell me anything, ma y/n. I am your mate, and we are one", he pushed himself in front of you and grabbed your hands, so you were forced to look him in the eye.
He desperately tried to hold eye contact with you, but you shook your head and withdrew your hands from him, turning again to walk to the other side of the room.
He sighed as he felt his own fears envelop him.
"If there is somebody else… I won't keep you from him", he felt his ears flattened, and his chest heaved with panic that you might turn and accept the comment as truth, but you did no such thing.
You turned with a chuckle as you sniffed to stop the snot dribbling down your face, your arms crossed themselves tightly around your chest, and it broke his heart to see you with such a dreaded shocked look on your face.
"I am pregnant", you slammed your eyes shut, eyes only opening after a few seconds when the silence became unbearable. If they tried, the words couldn't have felt more doomed coming out of your mouth.
Aonung's jaw dropped, his eyes widened, and his ears waved back and forth as he tried to figure out if you were telling the truth. Your tears couldn't have been fake, so you must have been, but why were you so upset with this blessing?
"You-You are with my child?" It was the first time you had ever heard the warrior stutter in your years of knowing him, and you worried that it was a bad omen.
You nodded grievously before your left hand detangled from its hug and flew to your mouth, covering the orifice to stifle a sob. Aonung was unhappy, and this was your worst nightmare coming to fruition.
Aonung's shocked eyes morphed to joy as he closed the gap with a single step, one hand immediately closing around your cheek to bring his forehead to yours. At the same time, the other pressed to your side, his most extended finger storing your belly button to stroke the child-growing within you.
The shame of the predicament was killing you, but the immovable emotion boiling in your stomach was stilled as Aonung's joyous guffaw hit your cheek.
You looked up at him, wondering how he could be laughing at a time like this, but then he shocked you. Aonung pressed a peck to your head and then another and another. He peppered your face with kisses, moving across your head, cheeks, and jaw before he tossed himself down to your floor on his knees and placed a single kiss on your belly, letting his hands encase your stomach.
You were ecstatically shocked, you had been expecting to be sat down, to be asked what the plan was to empty the embryo from your womb, but he was acting even more loving than ever, if that was even possible.
"For how long? Is it healthy? Why are you so upset? Is something wrong with it", his gentle touch increased as he gazed into your stomach, feeling the worry bubble up.
"No, everything is fine, ma Aonung. I was just worried". You quickly dried your tears now, wiping your nose on the back of your wrist and your eyes with your palms.
"Worried about what?" He pressed further, his forehead creasing as he stood again to return to your height.
"I was not sure you were ready," you mumbled, returning to the familiar grounds of fear as the idea that Aonung would be away with his duties as chief in training too much to have a family right now.
"It is a big responsibility," he agreed with you, nodding, but his arms slipped around your waist, and you dug into him, letting his hold tell you that he was about to continue positively.
"But we have been blessed. Imagine how many babies Eywa will bless us with if you are pregnant now!" His eyes lit up as he realized that this quick pregnancy must be a sign of good fertility and, therefore, more children would surely be on the way before you were both old.
You laughed. The scratchiness on your crying caused it to itch, but you were so pleased. It was like someone had just taken the weight of the world off your shoulder now that you had someone to confide this secret with.
"We have never talked about children", you nervously pointed out as you slipped your hands around his slim-cut waist, fiddling with the string that kept his loincloth tied on his hip.
"Well, how many do you want?" Aonung grinned at your touch, and smugness was coming over him as he started the foundation of the plans for his new family.
"I have no idea. How many do you want?" You shook your head with a sharp exhale. Children were a lot of work, and both parents had to be prepared to put in equal work to raise and preen over them. They would all be loved, but it would take work.
"As many as you will give me!" His smile stretched from ear to ear. His tail thumped against his calf eagerly as the idea of a family between you two emerged.
"Hm, three?" You asked hesitantly. It was the number of children Ronal and Tonowari had, so maybe that was a sound system to model the base of your ideal family size on.
"Four is better, more even", Aonung shook his head, disregarding the number with a serious face. You adored how cute he looked as he discussed your future children, and it made you playful as you stood in your hut, plotting away while Ronal was probably cursing you for being late.
"Well, five is a lucky number", you suggested, an eager peek in your tone as you pushed the invisible barrier between you two that kept you both from laying your true thoughts on the table.
"But then someone will be left out. Best to make it six", Aonung's eyes lit up with tease as he hopefully glanced at your face, trying to gauge your temperature as the number increased, but you were in your element.
"Six? You want six children?" You were slightly disbelieving at the idea of six children running around your cramped pod.
"Actually, I have always liked the number ten", that you laughed at. Ten? He must have been crazy.
"Ten? You had better become the best hunter in all of Pandora if you expect me to birth ten children", the thought of your poor body was enough to send your head spinning. Still, the idea of you sitting around a small fire with a large horde of children running around with a much older Aonung kissing your face was enough to make you blush.
"Five girls and five boys, that is good, no?" He had clearly been thinking about this behind closed doors, and it was enough to cure you of any doubts forever that this man wasn't ready.
"Are you starting an army?" You joked around with a laugh, and Aonung was on cloud nine. He felt everything click back into place as you recovered your former happiness with an added glow; Eywa, Aonung questioned how he didn't see you were pregnant sooner.
Aonung sighed and rolled his eyes at your words, using his humor to keep you amused as the conversation about your future panned out before you two.
"You want to have less?" He queried, feeling out exactly how many babies you wanted your mate putting in you. He wanted a large family, as large as you could bless and Eywa could condone.
"Hm, it's best not to say. Eywa will either give me far too many or far too few if I say", it was an old wife tail your mother had told you years ago, and even though it wasn't rested in any science as Eywa took no sides, the power of the jinx held your silence.
"You know, if we were to have ten--" Aonung brought up the number again, making you laugh merrily as a hot warmth spread across your belly.
"Aonung!" You interrupted him with a shy, embarrassed outcry as the picture of a vast family filled your mind.
"I am just saying, if it were ten, you would barely have any chores. They would do them all for you!" Aonung raised his hands in defense, slyly grinning as he thought of the acts it would require to populate his dream-sized family.
"You are trying to grow an army!" Your jaw fell slack in mock shock as you slapped an arm to his chest, giggling as he quickly snatched your wrist before it could retract.
"No, if I were, then I would have stuck with thirteen", He brought your hand to his mouth and pressed it against his face to encourage you to hold his cheek, which you did agreeably.
"Hm, well, you'll have to prove yourself with this one first; you have to convince me", your words were half joking, but Aonung's eyes fell down your figure towards your stomach with a contemplative smile.
"You will see, I will be the best father, and you will want to have all my babies", his words made you blush further, but a deeper part of you lit up with desire.
Everything had gone well. The only part hindering your happy ending was sitting far across the village in her own pod with her arms crossed, cursing her son and her student's tardiness. Unsure if it was connected.

why uta is a well-written character
Tumblr media
reposted from twitter since i saw uta get a lot of hate on there. a lot of people seem to not get her character so i am writing this post in hopes of getting people to see the light. anyways here we go,
1. her motivations are well supported by her backstory. it all began in the tragedy in elegia years prior where shanks took the blame for the destruction of the city and left uta in the care of gordon. this led uta to being forced into a life of loneliness and isolation for the rest of her growing up years.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
these feelings accumulate while she studies music until she eventually finds a den den mushi to livestream her performance. here she learns of the harshness of pirates in the outside world and coupled with her resentment towards the red haired pirates for leaving her motivates her to revisit her old dream of starting a new genesis. this is a solid way of story cohesion between uta's backstory and her actions in the present. everything ties in very nicely & its easy to understand & empathize with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) i've seen some complain about how uta saying that she knew all along that she had caused the destruction of elegia & called it bad writing. this was actually her way of coping with the years of isolation but also her grief in shanks leaving her.
Tumblr media
i speculate that uta realized she caused the destruction of elegia when she learned about tot musica and when faced with this, she chooses to find someone else to blame because guilt ate away at her so she chose to continue believing the lie that shanks did it. so it isnt bad writing because we are given more context on her mental state at the time and it is meant to be a gateway for viewers to empathize with her more but i guess people missed that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. she is not entirely evil. yes she is a villain because she believes she is doing whats right in order to achieve her goal however she still has goodness in her heart. she could've easily kept people trapped in the song world after tot musica was defeated.
Tumblr media
but she didnt because she realized that what she did was wrong and she changed for the better. yes there's moments in the film where she does upsetting things like tearing shanks's hat but these were done in her mentally unstable state so it is unfair to entirely fault her for her actions. she is merely a misguided and misunderstood lonely girl with a dream so dont be so hard on her. she is good deep down.
4. her character is unique. already a given since we dont have that many music centric characters except maybe brook but even brook's powers aren't linked to music so uta is really special. also her songs carry so much meaning and not only does it set the mood for most scenes but it also adds to the story. i highly recommend checking out the lyrics of each uta song because they really tie in to the events of the story and you might just enjoy her character more.
Tumblr media
5. her canonity adds more flare to the story. oda recently confirmed uta to be canon and this means a lot to both shanks and luffy's backstory. it does not detract from their backstories but rather it gives more context like how we understand a lot more about luffy's dream and why he wants a musician in his crew thanks to uta.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as for shanks, he now has more reason of being and we also got some clues to his lineage in the movie. this is really nice since most shoe horned characters have issues when they're added to canon.
alright so thats all. its been quite the long thread but i love uta and i want more people to appreciate her instead of hating or mischaracterizing her. if i missed anything do let me know. thanks and have a nice day <3

something worth fighting for
Tumblr media
Summary: Emily's ready to call it quits, Hotch and Morgan already have, and then a party at Rossi's changes everything.
Pairing: Hotch/Morgan
Words: ~7k
Warnings: hotch's ear injury (canon - 7x24 explosion), gunshot, vomiting, pain medication
Read on AO3: something worth fighting for
Notes: I humbly submit my work to the CM Holiday Gift Exchange (@cmgiftexchange), a gift for @hosseinis. I wrote almost 30k words for this exchange scattered between 4 different stories before this one became the keeper. I was incredibly fortunate to be matched to you, to be able to create a gift for you, but as happy as I was...it became almost impossible to decide among all the things I wanted to make for you! The other 3 stories were a lot darker, didn't feel much like holiday gifts, but they'll still be posted at some point probably soon because they were all solid stories. You inspired me to write a LOT of words this month my friend. Thank you for loving hotchgan and for being fun to talk to! Merry Crimbus! (Read under the cut or on AO3)
~~***~~~***~~***~~~***~~***~~~***~~***~~~***~~***~~~***~~
“Do you ever think about what might have happened if we had done for you what you and JJ did for me?”
Hotch frowned and laced his fingers together in his lap. His hands were cold in spite of them currently being in Georgia. The heat outside was well matched by the air conditioning blowing into the cabin of the jet. He would have preferred not to have it on but the team liked it chilly. They still had an hour before anyone would begin trickling onto the jet, but he’d been surprised to find Emily boarding early. Only about fifteen minutes behind him. She was normally one of the last, stretching the time to the very last moment. He’d been anticipating a nice long period of quiet, a head start on the pile of paperwork he had to complete to shut the door on this case. Not today.
It was his own fault. He’d invited her to come to him when she had a bad day, and those seemed to be coming harder and faster lately. He found her in his office, texting, even once at his door with an apologetic bottle of wine. That night ended up with her drinking the whole thing and him calling her a cab because she refused to sleep on his couch. She wouldn’t look him in the eye for two full days after that because she was worried they’d done something they shouldn’t have while he repeatedly assured her that he hadn’t had a drop of the wine and they’d remained respectable distances from one another the whole night.
“How so?” he asked, his voice a little breathless. She didn’t often bring his situation into the mix. No one ever really dared to talk about Haley, about Foyet, it was like a field full of buried unmarked landmines. They’d all more or less decided to pretend it never happened, everyone but Dave and Derek anyway. JJ had offered support once or twice but she didn’t ask questions, didn’t pry. It was easier for all of them to ignore it.
“If we had decided to fake your death, put you into WITSEC with Haley and Jack. Send you off to some boring old place where you could be a teacher or something. Do you ever wonder how that would have played out?”
“Why would I be a teacher?” he asked, a little offended by the implication that he was dull. She smiled warily.
“Fine, you could be something more exciting. A lion tamer in the circus. Anything you want. Do you ever wonder?”
“No,” he replied truthfully. Painfully. He couldn’t allow himself to wander down the path of what if, it hurt too much. Knowing that there were paths he could have taken that would have kept Haley alive was enough to bring him to his knees, the weight of it too much to bear. It wasn’t that he didn’t know it anyway, there were plenty of choices he had at one time that would have led to Jack not losing his mother. There were better outcomes, maybe, but there were also worse.
Emily hummed, a noise he was sure she had picked up right from him, spending too much time together. Especially lately, because she couldn’t talk to the team about any of this. Sure, she had JJ, but when she looked at JJ she only saw the pain she’d gone through and how hard it has been for her to mend what was broken...the rest of them were still grappling with it. How could she tell them she wasn’t happy? That she might want out? Hotch was the only one she thought could take it, or even worse, understand.
“Why?” He knew why, he’d known it for a while now, but it was still his job to ask. To get her to do the talking. She needed to open up and get something off of her chest. He hated to do this, to slip into his negotiator role, but it worked. It was for her benefit.
“Oh, I don’t know,” she started quietly. “I guess I’m having a hard time being myself again. I spent enough time being someone else so completely, coming to terms with Emily Prentiss dying...this is harder than I thought it would be. Living this life again. And I guess I wondered if you thought you would too. If we’d gotten Foyet and Haley lived, if you got your family back. Could you go from being Joe Schmo in the middle of nowhere...Utah or Wyoming or something...could you be Aaron Hotchner again? Could you just forget dying and pretend it never happened?”
“I would have to try,” he said rather matter-of-factly, but he knew it wasn’t so simple. “It would have been a very different circumstance, though. My situation and yours were not the same.”
“No, yeah, I know...I know…good people, innocent people still died because of me though. I can’t help thinking that I should have stayed dead to honor their sacrifices.”
“Emily.”
“No, don’t Emily me. Look, I tried to buy a house and put down roots. I called my mom and had dinner with her...but I can’t...I can’t fix this. Look at the trouble I’ve caused. I see Spencer still not sure he can trust you guys. I see what happened to you and Derek. I did that, Hotch. I did that.”
“No,” he replied sadly. His voice cracked before he finished his thought and he shook his head, waiting for it to come back. “I did that.”
“Not without my help,” she added timidly. “You two would probably have gotten married, adopted some babies, maybe. White picket fence, two car garage...you guys had it all and what you did for me…I guess I’m not sure it was worth it, in the end. Because look at me now. Look at me thriving.” That last part, as emotionally wrecked as she was, dripped in sarcasm. His chest ached.
“How can I help?”
She scoffed at him and rolled her eyes dramatically. She hadn’t let go of the sarcasm, it was her last line of defense, but her voice was shockingly vulnerable and sincere. It broke his heart. “Tell me it was worth it?”
“It was worth it.”
“You’re going to have to do better...come on. Don’t insult me. You were a Federal Prosecutor, you can lie better than that if you’re not going to tell me the truth.”
“You want the truth?” He glanced down at his watch to make sure they still had time. That he wouldn’t be in the middle of a vulnerable monologue when the team started boarding the jet. That was the last thing he needed. He had a few minutes to safely get it off of his chest. “There are aspects of what happened that I would go back and change if I could. Hindsight is a gift and a curse. But I wouldn’t take it all back. I would do it for you again in a heartbeat, even if it went exactly the same again. No matter the blow-back on me, protecting you was worth it.”
She blinked rapidly, tears clinging to the mascara she’d just put on. That wasn’t what she’d expected and she hated him a little for it. For the cruelty in his honesty. She couldn’t reciprocate that kind of shredded, gaping wound of vulnerability for him no matter how she wanted to. “You jerk.”
“I’m sorry,” he spoke quietly, reaching into his pocket and procuring a small square of silk with his initials stitched in delicate thread along the hem. He offered her the handkerchief without hesitation, waiting for her to make fun of him for it. For being so old fashioned that he carried an old hanky around with him. She didn’t, though, she just looked at him, blinked the tears from her lashes and dabbed at her under eyes with his pale silk gift. He was such a relic, she’d always thought, but a beautiful one. He wasn’t meant for this time. He wasn’t meant for many of the things he did. Everyone thought he was so tough, unbreakable, harsh and ruthless but she knew the truth: he was none of those things. He was certainly good at putting up his shields and playing the game, but he was one of the gentlest, softest most broken men she’d ever met in her life. She wanted to protect him with every last breath in her body, he was such a fool sometimes. But she couldn’t protect him, not from himself or anyone else.
“No,” she whispered finally, sniffling. “I’m sorry. I don’t...I need to suck it up, huh? Get on with it. Shit or get off the pot.”
“You don’t need to do anything you’re not ready for.”
“Says the guy that came back to work a month after getting stabbed nine times.”
He frowned and shrugged helplessly. “I didn’t know what else to do with myself. In retrospect, coming back so soon did more harm than good. I can’t go back, and I can’t wonder what might have been different had I...waited.” The way he said that last word made her squirm. Years later and he was still living with the crushing guilt, the lasting pain both physical and emotional. It struck her that this thing that had been burying her alive for a couple of months had been doing the same to him for years and it made her feel sick. He hadn’t healed he’d just hidden it beneath layers of life. It was mean of her, she knew it, but as she looked at him she knew...she didn’t want to become him, and that was exactly where she was headed if she didn’t get out now.
He’d given her all the answer she needed just by allowing her to see the truth of his existence. It was a cautionary tale.
“Thanks Hotch,” she said finally, knowing they had to wrap it up. He’d checked his watch twice since he opened up. The team were going to board soon and the last thing she wanted to do was be crying when they walked on. She wasn’t ready to tell them yet that she was thinking about leaving. She could see it in Hotch’s eyes, he knew. She didn’t have to say those words. The fact that she was thinking so hard about this was enough for both of them. “This is gross, by the way. There’s a reason Kleenex exists.”
“My grandmother made them for me.”
“That doesn’t make it better.”
“It’s clean,” he added a little defensively. “I do wash them.”
“Yeah. Sure. It’s all fine then.” She handed him back the wet silk and watched as he stuffed it into the pocket of his pants without thinking twice. “God. Do you have more of those on hand?”
“The clean ones are in my breast pocket, the soiled ones are in the pants pocket. I told you, I do wash them Emily.”
She scrunched up her nose in disgust. “You look good for ninety, you know that?”
He considered a reply, but decided it wasn’t worth it and settled for a long suffering sigh instead before turning back to his paperwork. His mind wasn’t in it anymore, now he could think only of one thing – Emily was going to leave. And probably soon. How would they survive that a second time?
(x)
The explosion that blew out the bank, crumbling concrete and shattering glass was unexpected. It rocked the ground beneath his feet as he dove behind the police car door, heart hammering in his chest so hard and so loud he thought it might actually break his ribs. Derek was in there. JJ was in there. Emily was in there. Dammit. He felt his ear pop, the sudden high-pitched screaming sound piercing his skull even after he covered his ears with shaking hands and squeezed his eyes shut. The pain was instant, the pressure behind his eyes building to a crescendo and for a whole ten seconds that felt like eternity he thought for sure his head was going to explode. There were tears in his eyes when he opened them again and he swiped at them with ash caked fingers, failing to notice for a moment the blood on his palm. His ear was bleeding.
Again.
He’d been on top of the PTSD, for the most part. Once the Bureau appointed therapist pointed it out to him and gave him some exercises to maintain his composure in situations he knew were going to be troubling to him, he’d been on top of it. “Mild,” she called it. When his palms got sweaty and his heart dropped into his stomach, when he felt sick and angry and vulnerable...it didn’t feel mild, but who was he to argue with her? She saw this kind of thing all the time. And he’d been close enough to explosions since that night in New York, had managed to work his way through them without incident, but now seeing the blood...being in the middle of the street...hearing sirens wailing and watching flames flicker...he wasn’t exactly right there again, it wasn’t a flashback, it was just that same sick feeling. Different but the same.
Except this time he had his whole team, and half a city’s worth of cops to look out for. He had civilians and hostages to worry about. The safety of hundreds of people rested on his shoulders and his fucking ear was bleeding down the side of his jaw. Will had been inside that building with the unsubs. He didn’t have time to walk himself through all of the steps as his stomach twisted in painful knots, as the bile rose in his throat. Not now, so he just stood up and shouldered his way through the reeling cops with one hand over his bleeding ear to keep the offending noise out of his head, at least a little. God it hurt.
“Dave!” He called, rushing toward his colleague. He was breathing through his nose, deep harsh breaths to stave off the nausea that was increasing in intensity. “Have you seen any of them?” He didn’t need to use names, Dave knew exactly who he meant.
“There,” Dave pointed at Derek and JJ on the ground with various members of the SWAT team they’d been charging in with. Emily had been ahead of them, she wasn’t in the group but she couldn’t have gotten far. He watched as Derek began to sit up, followed by JJ and then some of SWAT. They were all confused, coming to, but seemed okay. He turned to Dave, refusing to allow personal feelings to get their claws in. Not only did they have no place here right now, but he wasn’t welcome to them any longer. Derek was not his to care for in any way more significant than as colleagues, and as colleagues, what Derek really needed was for Hotch to take complete control of the chaos. Get them all out of this mess.
“Dave,” he began, setting his jaw and trying to regain his composure. His head was a grenade and the pin was barely holding on. Dave raised his hand and shook his head before Hotch had a chance to continue.
“You go get that ear looked at,” he said adamantly. “I’ll go find Erin and we’ll be waiting for you.”
Hotch wanted to argue that he was fine, but his the pressure in his head must have been visible to Dave because he wasn’t having any of it. “Okay,” he agreed. “I’m not sitting this one out, but I’ll go get cleaned up.”
“I’ll take it.”
(x)
Finding Derek in the alley, pinned against a dumpster with a man’s hands around his throat, Hotch didn’t even think. He wasn’t going to bother announcing himself, he wasn’t going to bother negotiating. This was one of those times where he simply couldn’t abide the protocols and procedures – this man allowed Will to be hurt, used him, put Henry in danger and was now trying to kill Derek. He had no trouble at all justifying the shot he was about to take.
And when Matthew Downs dropped at Derek’s feet, when the blood sprayed against Derek’s cheek and the dumpster and pooled on the ground, he felt no remorse. He simply stood with his gun still aimed, breathing heavily, his ear screaming louder than ever. He was going to be sick. That knowledge rumbled through him with the force of a freight train as his stomach twisted with the pain of the gun shot, but the look on Derek’s face, the look of pure gratitude and relief and maybe something else…it made him feel better as he dropped to his knees and dry heaved a few times. Derek hurried over to him and placed a hand between his shoulders, instinctively rubbing up and down over the vest. Even if Hotch couldn’t feel it, he knew Derek was there.
“Hotch?”
“I’m okay,” he gasped, glad that nothing was actually coming up. You have to eat in order to have anything to expel and he couldn’t remember the last time he’d had anything but coffee. Dinner the night before? Maybe? “Go. Find Will. I’ll be right behind you.”
Derek did as he was told without arguing, but took one last moment to glance back as he stepped out of the alley. He knew better than to go back, knew better than to ask what was wrong. He could do that later.
(x)
How Dave managed to put together a wedding on such short notice was beyond any of them, but Hotch knew better than most what money could do to trump time. Enough zeroes on a check and you could get anything (and anyone) you wanted. So, mere days after being shot and chained to a bomb, Will was ready to take JJ's hand in marriage and Hotch...well he was just trying to gather the courage to show up.
Jessica was smoothing his sweater over his shoulders and smiling at how soft he looked in it while he grumbled about every minute detail.
“You’re still not sure you should go,” she said, turning him toward her. He shrugged.
“I think everyone would have more fun if I didn’t go.”
“That doesn’t make any sense.”
“Considering what I put everyone through this past year…”
“Stop it. Right now, stop it.”
His shoulders slumped pitifully and she almost felt bad for snapping at him, but not quite. He deserved it. He could be so stupid sometimes she just couldn’t stand it.
“You didn’t do anything maliciously. You were trying to help, and sometimes that means getting it wrong...it isn’t as if you had all the time in the world to consider repercussions. You had to make a split second decision. Maybe it was right, maybe it was wrong, but Emily is alive and your team is intact and isn’t that what you were going for?”
“Not everyone is intact.”
“Derek’s going to come back. He loves you so much. He still does. You don’t wake up at the crack of dawn and show up to babysit a kid so his dad can go do some stupid triathlon if you don’t still care.”
“I didn’t tell him I’d asked Dave.”
“Of course. You assumed that breaking up meant that you had to find someone new to watch him, that’s reasonable. And he assumed that he’d made the commitment and he had to honor it. Also reasonable. Of course, if you two were better at communicating…”
“I know.”
“My point being, he still loves you. And Jack. I think he just needs time. You have plenty of time.”
He slumped down on the couch and put his head in his hands, breathing in deep. Once, twice. Filling his lungs, pausing, exhaling. His head hurt, hadn’t stopped hurting since the explosion. He had an MRI in the morning, an MRI he should have scheduled sooner but he thought it would go away. He hadn’t been as close to this explosion this time, it shouldn’t have been so bad, but then there was the gunshot and the noise from the scene and the pain in his head had been like a hot knife slicing through his brain like a Thanksgiving turkey ever since.
“How about you take one of your nuclear pills and I’ll be your designated driver?” Jess offered, crouching before him with her hands on his knees. “Come on. Take one and you might actually enjoy the wedding. You know I love crashing weddings.”
“You have a date tonight,” he countered miserably before lying back and throwing his arm over his eyes, resting his head against the cushion to try and take some of the pressure off. She huffed at him, that irritated little puffing noise she made that meant she thought he was a complete idiot without actually saying the words.
“I can reschedule. Anita will understand.”
“Anita? The nurse?”
Not just any nurse. The nurse who had cared for him when he was in the Urgent Care sick as a dog a few months back. The nurse whose sarcasm was biting and her smile was enchanting. The nurse with a head full of silver hair she claimed was due entirely to the stress of her job.
“That’s the one.”
“You got a date while I was sick? That’s low, even for you.”
“She’s pretty. And she said I was a saint for dealing with you. How can I resist such compliments?”
He groaned miserably. “I was sick.”
“You were. Very sick, really. But her point still stands. You’re a pain in the ass and I’ve been putting up with it for decades. I deserve to get a little something for my trouble once in a while.”
“Is she nice?”
“Very,” Jessica replied with a smile, her fingers scratching at his scalp mindlessly as she settled in on the couch beside him. He’d always liked his head being scratched but even more when it hurt. “She’s smart and charming and sweet, too. She has great taste in restaurants, but she drinks sweet white wine so I guess she’s not perfect.”
“Not many are.” His shoulders relaxed as she scraped her nails over his scalp. It didn’t exactly do anything to the pain itself but he found it easier to ignore, at least marginally. “You could bring her,” he offered quietly. “To the wedding. If you want.”
“I don’t think she’s ready to meet the whole family,” Jessica said with a smile.
“She’s already met me. Everyone else is easy.”
“Good point. I’ll ask her. Does that mean you’re going to take the meds like a good boy?”
“I don’t think I can go if I don’t.”
“Look at you, making good choices.” He didn’t want to take the pill; it made him goofy. It made him feel lightheaded and dizzy, made him say things without thinking first. Made him cry over silly things, like Disney movies and finding crayons crunched in the couch cushions. The pill really didn’t do much except make him forget how bad his head hurt. Which he knew was ultimately the goal, but the tradeoff didn’t always seem worth it. He didn’t like the way it made him feel like a different person.
“Here,” Jess said, extending the pill and a glass of water to him after rummaging around through the medicine cabinet for a moment. He was always pushing it to the back like he was ashamed of it. “Anita said she’d love to come as long as there’s an open bar. I told her that David Rossi never skimps on the booze and do you know what she said?”
“She’s a big fan of his books,” he deadpanned and she let out a barking laugh that hurt his head.
“Exactly. Said she couldn’t believe I was just casually inviting her to David Rossi’s mansion for a wedding hours before the wedding and what was she going to wear.”
“She doesn’t need to worry,” he said quietly, sipping at the water. “She could come in scrubs if she wanted. No one would hold it against her.”
“Did you learn nothing from being married to Haley all those years?”
He hummed, admitting defeat. “I think the answer to that should be obvious.”
“Point taken. I’m going to go home and find a dress, you lay here and rest. Let that pill do it’s thing. We’ll be by to pick you guys up in an hour.”
(x)
The party was bigger than Hotch had imagined it would be on such short notice. More people milling around, many faces he recognized and some he didn’t. They were a little late, maybe it was fashionable, maybe it was rude, he couldn’t be trusted to tell the difference in his fuzzy state.
“Aaron,” Dave said, pulling him in for a hug. “How are you?”
Hotch never know how to answer that question truthfully, so he rarely did. “Good,” he replied, smiling. The smile wasn’t even forced, at least. But Dave knew anyway.
“Liar.”
“I’m okay, Dave.”
“You get that ear looked at?”
“I have an appointment in the morning for an MRI. It’s giving me some trouble but I’m sure it’ll be fine.”
“You keep me posted. In the meantime, why don’t you introduce me to your guests?”
Hotch smiled a little sheepishly and stepped out of the way to let Jessica and Anita be greeted by their host. Jack was standing beside Hotch, still in his shy phase even if he did know everyone here. “You know Haley’s sister Jessica,” Hotch said, waiting a moment before continuing. “And this is her date Anita.”
“Anita,” Dave said, kissing her hand with all of that charm he had at his disposal, holding nothing back. Hotch watched, blinking slowly, doing everything a little slowly. “How did the two of you meet?”
“She brought him to the Urgent Care with a pretty bad case of strep throat,” Anita replied casually. “By the time they left he had antibiotics and a doctor’s note to stay home from work and I had a pretty girl’s phone number.”
“I remember that, it’s hard to get him to miss any work,” Dave said, eyeing Hotch. “It’s been a couple of months now.”
Emily approached Hotch as Dave took Jessica and Anita by the arm, one on each side, to show them around the house and the party. To get them drinks and push them out on to the dance floor. He insisted that his live band not go to waste, and they still had some time to kill before the bride was ready to walk down the aisle. The look on her face was sad, unbearably so, and he knew he wasn’t up for the conversation she looked ready to have. Ready or not, he had to try.
“Do you want to talk?” he asked when she sighed more than spoke her hello. She looked distressed, sad, heartbroken really.
“No, not here,” she said quietly. “But soon. Tomorrow maybe. Okay?”
“Tomorrow,” he repeated. “I have an appointment early in the morning, we can meet for coffee afterward.”
“It’s a date,” she replied, forcing a smile. Derek watched the interaction from across the room, his drink in hand. He knew she was leaving, and he missed her already. It was crushing him, and he knew it would crush Hotch too. After everything they’d done, he felt for the man. His world had come crashing down when Emily died, but he knew Hotch’s hadn’t ever stopped. Everything just kept stacking up – from Emily’s death to her new life, Pakistan and Emily coming back and the Senate Hearing Committee, his team being scrutinized, the trip to Chicago for Derek’s cousin that was made more awkward by his family’s knowledge that the two of them had broken up. His aunt Yvonne had tried to push them back together and only made it worse for them in the end. And his mother...his mother was angry at him. “He didn’t lie to hurt you,” she’d scolded first by phone and then later in person, in Desiree’s hospital room of all places. “He lied to protect you. I seem to recall you pulling the same stunt on us, your family and we still love you.” But he still lied, and it was hard to put that trust back in place. It just wasn’t that easy. He was trying so damn hard.
Showing up and watching Jack for him so he could go do his race, showing up at 4am only to find Dave already there...it had been an olive branch opportunity, but he couldn’t do it when he saw Dave. Because that meant Hotch didn’t believe he would still honor his commitment, it meant Hotch really believed it was over. At least that’s what he told himself when he entered the apartment anyway, because how could he leave when Jack’s eyes lit up? When Jack hugged him and said he missed him? “I miss you too, kiddo,” he’d said and Dave asked him to stay, invited him to have some of the scrambled eggs he was cooking up while Hotch thanked them both and rushed out the door. It wouldn’t take both of them to watch Jack but he couldn’t leave the kid. It gave him an excuse to throw Jack up on his shoulders, to cheer Hotch on, and it surprised him when he called him baby as he approached the finish line. He detected amusement from Dave beside him but the rest of the team were so wrapped up in their own morning drama that they didn’t say a word.
He watched Hotch make his way through the party as he danced with Penelope, as he danced with Emily and even Reid. The music was upbeat and fun, easy for dancing and forgetting the weight of the last few days. The last few months. When he saw Will talking to Rossi, waiting for his bride, he couldn’t help being a little jealous even if he was happy for them. He thought it would be him next. He really thought he and Hotch had it all, too. Did Will care that JJ lied to him about Emily? Of course it wasn’t exactly the same, Will didn’t know Emily like that, he didn’t stick his hands in her blood, hold her while she waited for the ambulance, look into her eyes and watch the light fade. But he still didn’t know she’d lived. JJ kept it from him, too.
Finally Hotch, in his customary rounds, came to Derek near the drinks. “Hey,” Derek said, reaching out to catch him by the elbow like he was just going to walk by. He probably was. He’d almost gone out of his way to respect Derek’s request for space, gone so far overboard that it felt like he’d been the one dumped and not the other way around. “How’re you doing?”
“I’m okay,” Hotch replied quietly, barely audible over the DJ’s dance music. He was blaring something by ABBA that had Jessica and Anita out on the floor having a blast. “You?”
“Same.”
The conversation stalled predictably. They couldn’t talk to one another anymore. “Where are you sitting?” Derek asked casually. Hotch shrugged.
“Wherever Jack tells me we’re sitting I suppose.”
At that Derek smiled. “Well, we’d better find some seats huh? Looks like things are getting serious.”
As it ended up, the seats Jack chose put them right beside Derek and Penelope. Hotch’s knee bumped Derek’s as he took his seat and tried to make himself smaller so he didn’t block anyone’s view, so he didn’t take up too much space. Nothing ever had the kind of leg room he needed.
The wedding was fast, short and sweet, to the point. JJ looked beautiful and Will looked so happy Hotch could hardly stand it. He cried, not at all surprised by the display of emotion. He knew it was going to happen the minute he swallowed that damn pill. At least he wasn’t alone, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when he glance around. Not even Derek beside him could contain the tears in his eyes.
What he hadn’t expected was to find Derek’s hand circling his, dragging it into his lap and letting it rest there against his thigh. They didn’t look at each other, but that connection made Hotch’s heart nearly burst in his chest. He froze, staring straight ahead a little too intently, breath painfully tight and burning in his lungs. Derek squeezed his hand and his vision narrowed to pinpricks, splotches of color flashing over the scene.
When JJ and Will kissed, Derek squeezed his hand again and then let it go. They didn’t talk, Derek just got up and took Penelope to the dance floor at the invitation of the DJ, swaying along with her. Hotch watched from beside Jack and Henry as everyone made their way back out there.
“Hotch?” Emily asked, coming up beside him quietly. He hadn’t realized she wasn’t out there, but now her hand was extended to him with a sheepish smile. “You can’t sit this one out. It’s the law I think.”
“Sure I can,” he replied, but he took her hand and led her to the dance floor anyway, holding her gently as they settled into the foxy. She looked up at him with wide eyes and a grin.
“You actually know how to dance,” she said. “Of course you do. Why am I surprised that the guy who carries silk hankies can ballroom dance?”
“There are a lot of things you don’t know about me, Emily.”
“Yeah...well...there are a lot of things you don’t know about me, too, y'know…”
That made him laugh, a light lead in to giving her a gentle twirl and a dip. Derek glanced at them as he swayed with Penelope.
“He’s really good,” Penelope whispered in Derek’s ear. “Did he ever take you dancing?”
Derek nodded, closing his eyes. “Yeah. He did.”
“You should go cut in. I saw what you did back there…”
“I don’t think I’m ready for that yet.”
“What is it going to take?”
“I don’t know mama. I don’t know. I never broke up with someone I was still in love with before.”
“Is Emily leaving us?” The way she changed course made him stiffen up and she could hardly contain her emotion at that. She knew just by that alone. “She is. Why?”
“You’ll have to ask her yourself.”
And all at once she was dragging them across the dance floor, cutting in on Hotch and Emily’s dance. He wasn’t sure if it was calculated or not, but he thought it probably was. She was like that. She didn’t even ask before peeling Emily away from Hotch, before taking her hand and moving them away. Emily glanced at Hotch apologetically and shrugged, not bothering to fight back.
“Well,” Derek said quietly, extending his hand to Hotch. “You want to take me for a spin? It’s been a while, I’m a little rusty. I’ll try to keep up.”
“I’m sure you still have it,” Hotch said, taking Derek’s hand and pressing in close. Derek smelled good, sweet like cigar smoke and cinnamon and bourbon. He began leading, stepping in time with the music and wasn’t surprised when Derek fell into step easily. “If I stumble, I’m sorry,” he added quietly, his mouth unbearably close to Derek’s ear. “I had to take some medication and it makes me a little loopy.”
“What for?” Derek asked, hardly caring whether Hotch stumbled over his feet.
“The explosion at the bank re-injured my ear. I’m sure it’s fine but it does hurt quite a lot.”
“You get it looked at?”
“I have an MRI in the morning.”
Derek smiled and nodded, realizing that they had fallen into perfect sync with one another almost effortlessly. Like no time had passed. Talking felt forced but it was getting easier the further in they went.
“Do you need me to take Jack to school?”
“Jessica said she could,” Hotch replied. Derek nodded.
“I know she will, but she’s getting herself pretty good and liquored up…”
“She was supposed to be my designated driver.”
“Yeah. I’ll drive you guys home, I’m not in the mood to drink tonight anyway. Had a bourbon with Rossi and Will to take the taste out of those nasty cigars he gave us, but otherwise I’ve been sipping soda water with lime.”
“You don’t need to do that. I think Anita has been drinking Sprite. She works in the morning.”
“Hotch…” Derek said, leaning back just far enough that they could lock eyes. “I’m not just offering to drive you home because I think you need a ride. I’m really trying here…”
“Oh.”
“Oh? I mean if you don’t want me to...if you’ve moved on…”
“No. I...no. That isn’t it.”
“Okay, so what is it?”
Hotch let out a small sigh and pursed his lips. “You asked for space, and I gave it to you. But in Chicago...it felt like you were finished. The way you behaved led me to believe your need for space had become something more. That you had come to a decision and that we had no future.”
“You really think I’d do that and not talk to you?”
“I don’t know, Derek. I have no right to expect anything of you anymore.”
“So you’re good just letting it die? You’re not gonna fight for it?”
“Derek, what do you want from me? You said you couldn’t trust me, that you needed space...when you ask me for space, I am going to give it to you. Did you really want me to fight?”
“No, but I didn’t think it would be so damn easy to let go of either.”
“It hasn’t been easy. Has it looked easy? Is that really what you think?”
“Well it hasn’t exactly looked hard.”
Hotch was on the verge of tears, maybe angry tears at this point, he didn’t know. He had almost no control over that and wasn’t going to expend any energy trying to. “I think you’re the only one who can’t see it.”
Derek didn’t like the sound of that, mostly because it hurt. It was probably true. He’d been doing his best not to pay any attention to Hotch, because paying attention hurt and made him want to go back to him and he knew he wasn’t ready for it. Because he felt like he shouldn’t be. He shouldn’t just be okay with Hotch lying to him, should he? Even if he’d done the same damn thing to his family over his cousin? And they forgave him because she was back in their lives, they forgave him because his motivation was for good. Wasn’t Hotch’s too? It wasn’t like he did it for his own gain. Every time he got close, something pulled him away.
“Maybe I am,” he admitted finally. “Hotch. I love you. I never stopped, I hope you know that. But I just don’t know how to forget what happened.”
“I would never ask you to forget.”
Of course Hotch would say that. Just be willing to keep a relationship up when he’s at an automatic deficit. Spend forever trying to make up for his failures.
“I hope for your forgiveness,” Hotch added quietly, almost too quietly for Derek to hear. “But I wouldn’t expect you to forget.”
“It can’t happen again.”
“I can’t make that kind of promise, Derek. I think you know that. There was no way I could have predicted being in that situation before and I can’t know something won’t arise again, but if there is any way around it, I will take it. I can do better than I have done at including you and sharing the burden. I can do better at including you in the hard decisions. I can do better.”
“You can, or you will?”
Hotch smirked at that, at the wording only they would pick apart. “I will.”
“Good enough,” Derek said, finally, taking the lead from Hotch for a moment. Remembering his own feet, his own rhythm. He’d missed this feeling, their bodies moving like one, the smell of Hotch. It was soft and clean, cotton and sunshine, he never wore more than deodorant and maybe some aftershave that lingered. He swayed his hips, stepping back and then forward, upping the tempo with the music. Hotch never missed a step even if he did look a little pale, a little light on his feet. Derek wanted to spin him, to twirl and dip him but he thought that might be pressing his luck. Instead he leaned in and kissed him, stealing his breath. “I don’t want space anymore. I want this.”
“Me too.”
From the bar, while she waited for her new drink, Emily smiled and watched Hotch and Derek. She couldn’t help it. “All it took was me leaving,” she said quietly and Penelope let out the wet sob she’d been holding back for two songs now.
“No,” she wailed, pulling Emily into a teary hug. “No no no.”
“It’s okay Pen. It’s for the best. We all need it. A fresh start for everyone. We can’t go back to the way it was before and it only hurt everyone to try...this is good. I promise.”
“Why doesn’t it feel good?”
“Because goodbyes are hard, even if they’re necessary. But look at that...look at them…look at Hotch and Derek...and JJ and Will...don’t cry over me.”
“Can I come visit you?”
“Of course.”
“Right away. I’ll help you move in. We can shop for furniture and explore your new neighborhood and find the best place for um…fish and chips...you eat the fish I’ll eat the chips…”
“Yes,” Emily smiled, holding Penelope’s hand tight. “To all of it. Yes. I’d love that.”
“Good! Now, come dance with me. Because I need to soak up as much Emily Prentiss as I possibly can tonight…”
“Anything for you, Penelope.”
"Ahhh," Penelope gushed, squeezing Emily's hand. "You are so right."

i'm absolutely windswept
I started Thunderteers in May of 2019. I remember very distinctly being out to dinner with Hubs, coordinating the AU concept almost entirely for a long, epic first story. We were at a Chili's and I had my usual indecisive platter of appetizers as my meal. As of today there's only been 3 chapters of what mapped out that day. Some of it made it to paper. I've never been great at those long epics - I love reading them, but my writing brain is most solid with the 1K-6K word length.
So I started building the world with fic. I wrote about Virgil playing the violin, and how he made music. I explored Gordon's accident, and what it could've happened in place of a hydrofoil. I reached for Military!Bros instead of my usual FishTank, and explored the truth behind legends. I forced myself to make and break OCs, spent way too much time researching when songs were created, recipes of the time, if certain animals were classified the same way, and what name a city may have had in 1774.
Other things I decided not to research at all.
Above all that, before I posted a new story or fic, I asked myself if the imagery was there, and was it something I was proud of? Because I knew - the only way I could get others to set sail with me, was to make sure I was taking you on the journey. Not if it was historically accurate, but does this feel like our boys, and are they interacting with the environment in a way that feels like it would still be them? Is it possible to still see Gordon? Still see Scott?
That was my first AU.
Naturally, in asking myself this, I've had different images in my head all this time, and I was lucky enough this month to have the chance to ask the amazing @chenria to bring one of them to life for me. You can find the post below:
Sailor Gordon by Chenria.
Go like it, reblog it, send her support, consider joining her patreon if you can. She knocked it out of the park, and in so doing - inspired me along the way.
If you decide to read Thunderteers, just know - it's not always beautiful.
But this one - it's all love and heart. I've written the snippet for Windswept as a thank you to chenria's amazing work, to everyone who puts up with my reblogging posts for the age of sail (#ships ships ships) or who tag me in things to see, or have Wellerman living rent free in their heads and let me play along. Thanks to those that have read the story, maybe cried along, or sent me words of encouragement.
Thank you for letting me experiment with language and story, and sometimes - when I get really lucky- for the words I've written to matter to you.
*****
Windswept (~500 words)
As far as clouds go, Gordon is among the strangest. The wind tugs at his clothing, hanging loose and informally on his silhouette, and at his hair where he stands aloft amidst the sails. The seabirds close to shore weave their dance between the ropes above, circling him curiously. Even though his form is strange to them, he’s not unwelcome in their home in the air. If anything, he’s just a part of the flying clouds that make up the rigging of their ship.
The gulls’ calls sound like laughter, and he smiles with them. The birds will accompany the ship for a time, darting towards the quick meal at the bow where the front of the ship often disturbs the sea life below. If the voyage is to be a lucky one, they’ll grace the wood of the ship with a gift or two that’ll be left to wash away only with the next rain.
Gordon can feel the sway of the ship stronger from above; though with the Thunderbird still anchored close to shore, the waves are gentle as they lap against her firm hull. The movement is a tease for the voyage ahead, as Gordon has always found himself more comfortable in their journeys out to sea than he’s ever felt in his tentative steps on land. The ship has watched him grow and come of age, from awkward limbs racing up the rigging, to strong shoulders heaving her lines and helming her wheel. She’s given him the freedom to roam, to explore lands and seas unknown, and even with the thrill of adventure, Gordon feels most safe in the comfort of her embrace. If that isn’t a home, he doesn’t know what else is.
He knows her in the early morn - the way the sunrise paints cotton and how the mist tingles at the fuzz on his arms at the start of his shift. He knows the echo of their shanties within her oak beams, and the squeak of her joy when the creatures of the sea ride along with her bow waves upon them really catching the wind and when the tang of citrus remains on his tongue from breaking fast.
He knows her in the rain, the smell of wood and cotton when burdened with wet from above as well as below, the crackle of lightning in its brief and staggered illumination of her flags. He knows her in the cold, when the puff of his breath is visible and the wind cuts into his skin. Among whales, massive and elegant as they groan their song into her hull.
He knows her in the evening – Virgil and John’s cooking and their different nuances for flavor and spice, the vibrato of Virgil’s violin paired with the warm timbre of the Scott’s cello pulsing along her foundations. The way she creaks below Alan’s eager footsteps.  He knows the soft glow around flame-lit lanterns in the darkest of night and the hush of melodies uttered in multiple languages up towards twinkling stars. The way his hammock rocks him to sleep with her movement.
He knows her in both fair winds and motionless skies, in the brightest of sunlit days and the most cloud-covered of nights. Through doldrums, archipelagos, and the far reaches of the seas, and along coastlines, he knows her.
And his soul trembles just as she does, her unfurled sails shuddering in anticipation of catching the wind.

Do you think fictionjunction could do the ending or opening for the new madoka movie? I feel like since kalafina doesn't exist anymore, the more logical option to me is fictionjunction, Keiko is still there after all :( I would love so much if they get at least an insert song or something like that, it would give them huge exposure as a band, I feel like I'm the only one but I wish FJ could be like the continuation of kalafina in some way T_T
Tumblr media
Hello there!
This feels like such a throw-back to 2021 when "Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht – Rising" was first announced. I made a post about it here =>
Everyone was super hyped and hoped that this would be Kalafina's best chance for a reunion. I think they even trended on Twitter for a while thanks to everyone's speculations. Who would have thought that it would take the creators another two years to get to a point where they could finally make some proper announcements and reveal a tentative release date. However, we still don't know who is going to be in charge of the OP/ED...*sighs* Just a couple of days after I had made the above post, I received an ask about whether or not I thought that Kalafina would be involved in the project.
Not much has changed about my opinion since then. As long as Wakana is with Space Craft, I don't see a reunion happening so it is very unlikely that Kalafina will be singing any of the tie-ins. As for other options, I still feel like a solo gig for Hikaru (maybe as FictionJunction feat. Hikaru?) would be the best idea. This way, the work is paying tribute to the original Kalafina songs but there's no weird sense of replacement. And let's be real here, no one needs a proper breakthrough more than Hikaru. I hope that she will eventually be able to sign up with Highway Star. In her current state as freelance artist, I'm afraid the Madoka Magica creators won't even consider hiring her (connection to YK notwithstanding). Having the support of a solid agency could probably restore some of the credit she has undoubtedly lost as artist during the last year.
Re: FictionJunction => Maybe it's just me but I am not particularly eager to see FictionJunction or even Hikaru and Keiko be in charge of a song because it would feel like they are trying too hard to be Kalafina 2.0. Yeah sure, Joelle or LINO can take up Wakana's role but for me, Kalafina is not Kalafina without Wakana.
I see your point of course and for many this option would probably be better than nothing but I wonder if huge exposure for FictionJunction is even something Yuki Kajiura would want...I don't think it has ever been her goal to gain mainstream success with her FictionJunction project. But who knows...

my sister died last week and that post really hit home for me. it's very real.
i'm so sorry. god i'm so sorry. i want to say a lot but i know there's no words. i'm still lost in the fog of it 3 yrs later but a week out i couldn't even put into words to you how i was feeling or what i was comprehending. and i'm sure you get that on some level too. if you ever want to talk about her when you're ready, what she was like and what she thought about the world and how she was, feel free to message me any time. or even just to talk about you and how you're doing. this is honestly a hell i wouldn't wish on anyone and i hope you have the solid support system around you that you deserve. it's so so so so hard and there is no mollifying or getting around that. i'm here if you need me. i also know some decent online resources for grieving esp sibling loss, so just give me a bell if you get to a place where you think that could be helpful. x

i saw ur outsiders post abt the little sister and i love it sm 😭 i was wondering if u could do hcs with the gang where the curtis brothers younger sister reminds them a lot like mrs.curtis, she older than pony but younger than soda and darry, thank you <3
Ms. Curtis.
Mr and Mrs Curtis knew they wanted a big family. With Darry, then Soda and Y/N, then Pony and Addie. With two sets of twins, they were always occupied.
"Mom" this, "Dad!" that, "MAAA!" those. Whatever went on in their minds, they always had a great time. Darry never felt left out because of the other four siblings he had. He always favoured Y/N.
She reminded the boys of Mom all the time. Darry was never ready to say goodbye to Ma. She was his everything. Those 19 years were always his favourite. The twins were 15 and 13 so it obviously hit them hard.
Addie never had much of a bond with her Mom, but she obviously still missed her. Y/N was the spitting image of Ma. The boys would always ask for her to cook and what not.
Y/N would constantly try to calm the boys down whenever she smiled too hard and reminded them. Darry looked like their dad which didn't help either.
Soda
"Y/N, you look so much like Mom." I told her.
"Yeah, yeah. Means you do, too. Twin brother."
I admired everything about my twin sister.
She was kind
she cared
she was a bright soul!
But that smile.
Her smile made me burst out into a million tears.
I just wanted to be held in her arms forever if I could.
I love my sister. Not like that, but I just love my sisters so much.
Addie got Mom's attitude
and Y/N got her face.
Darry got most of Dad's features, and Pony got his outview on the world.
We felt more loved by them than anyone could ever fathom to show
or even admit to.
Whenever Y/N would come into the DX just to say hi cuz she got outta gymnastics or school.
"Hey Sodapop!" She'd say, then sarcastically say, "Hi, Steve," in an annoyed tone.
Just like Mom would when I brought Steve home after school.
Y/N would drive me to the gym sometimes and we'd weight lift and play basketball together.
She was always better at volleyball though.
One day, all of us Curtis kids went out and played volleyball at the beach. Twins vs Twins.
Man Pony and I looked stupid.
It reminded me of when Mom and Dad took us to the beach.
All because Darry was reffing or walking along the shore and Y/N was playing with us or sitting in the shade.
I always wanted hugs from Darry and Y/N.
Because whenever they held me in their arms, I felt like a kid again.
It felt like Mom and Dad were home.
Darry
"They aren't coming back, guys."
I looked around the room and saw the 4 sets of glossy eyes looking back into mine.
Sodapop had stared at the floor for a solid minute.
Addie had screamed and broke into tears.
Ponyboy buried his head into Addie's shoulder, hugging her tight as they both cried.
Y/N stood up, tears falling down her face and smushed herself in my arms.
Y/N was the only one who seemed to care how I felt in the moment.
As the others were crying, her and I were sobbing into eachother.
I remember Mom teaching her and I her recipes because we were the only ones that loved her cooking enough to want to cherish it.
I had sometimes looked at a picture of Y/N and thought it was Mom.
I knew I looked like Dad and I knew the others knew it.
Soda had looked up to me for the while that Dad hasn't been around.
After about a month the younger twins, especially Addie, had started needing a bedtime story.
Pony requested Y/N, and Addie wanted me. I understood why.
Addie loved Dad. Pony loved Mom.
But it was Soda who needed the most support.
He would look at all of us together and shake the picture so it formed Mom and Dad's faces.
Sodapop needed us, and we needed him.
He went silent and always cuddled with Y/N. He missed Momma's snuggles and stories.
We all relied on Y/N to make up some story before we all passed out to sleep.
Soda would rub my back while the others had already fallen asleep together on the couch.
Y/N was our sister.
But Y/N looked like our Mom.
Pony
When Mom and Dad died I didn't know how to deal with it.
I was 13
It was hard.
Y/N was then on my closest thing to my mom.
I was always closer to my mom than I was Dad.
Pretty sure we were all "Mommy's boys" or "Daddy's girls",
So it definitely hurt when Darry told us.
I remember what it felt like to see Darry cry for the first time since we was little.
One morning I woke up earlier than usual and the house was more alive than ever.
Steve, Johnny, and Sodapop were sitting on the couch just chatting
Two-Bit was none the doubt sitting in front of the television drinking a beer
Addie was sitting in Darry's chair while Dallas was sitting in front of her
Then Y/N and Darry were making breakfast for everyone.
" What's goin' on?" I asked
"Good morning sleepyhead!" Addi called, moving over for me to sit with her. "Two-Bitch and Dallas stole some stuff from the convenience store and Steve brought stuff from the DX so we could all have a nice breakfast."
"Y'know like old times, lil buddy." Steve piped up.
I looked at Y/N and Darry and for a second I thought Mom and Dad were home. I went in the kitchen to help out and made everyone's plates.
"Hey, Mom, I need another plate." I said in my subconscious.
"Huh?" Y/N looked at me like I was insane.
"We need one more plate for Steve."
"Ponyboy, you called me Mom."
"Oh, sorry, I'm a little tired!" I smiled.
Oh right, it's just my sister.
I looked around. Even Dallas looked worried for me. "Pony, come to our room for a second?" Addi said, getting up from the chair.
I did, just to hear my least favourite sentence again.
"She's not coming back."
Addie
I knocked on Darry's door the first night.
"What's up, Ads?"
I just sniffled and threw myself into his arms. He held me for a few minutes before Soda heard me crying.
We had a family meeting that night.
"Sodapop, what do you have of mom and dad?" It was definitely something.
Darry had a bunch of birthday cards and dad's flannels
Sodapop had a picture and a sweater Mom made for him (we all have one)
Y/N had Mom's perfume and a bunch of nail polish
Pony had Dad's cologne and a story him and Mom wrote
Then it came down to me. I had a stuffed bulldog that Dad bought me when I was little, and for awhile I didn't want to realise I had Mom's favourite dress.
Only because I looked like her when I wore it.
I may not have been close to my mom but I still had a connection with her.
Y/N had always been motherly to me. She was an amazing big sister.
She braided my hair when Mom couldn't
She helped me get dressed when I was little
She pushed me to get out of bed after they died.
I didn't sleep for about two weeks.
Someone took my dog out of my room and that's why I couldn't get up.
When I finally went to sleep, it was because Y/N and Darry had given me a bedtime story.
Pony would wake up some nights and just rub my back.
"Addie we have school you have to sleep."
"I can't."
"I'll get Darry."
"Okay.."
Then Darry would read Pony and I to sleep.
Y/N
I wanted to break down when Mom and Dad died.
I couldn't bear it.
I cried for a week straight
Ponyboy had talked to me about the sunrise and sunsets
One day all of us watched the sunset and I noticed some of Mom's features in the clouds.
Like she was watching down on us.
Darry and I from then on took motherly and fatherly traits.
We would make breakfast together most mornings if the others didn't already.
I remember how Addie would just eat toast or something small
And how Sodapop would eat only eggs
It hurt a lot when Ponyboy called me Mom for the first time.
I know Sodapop and I look a lot like mom but the fact it got so hard for everyone hurt even more
I had to give Soda bedtime stories sometimes.
I told him about Snow White and Cinderella
And I made up stories about Barbie and Ken.
It hurt me to see my twin brother missing our Mom so much.
But it hurt me more to see Addie.
She would come into mine and Soda's room either before school or at night. "Sister can you braid my hair?"
One time Pony came with her "Can we have a bedtime story?"
I ended up coping by drawing and crafting with the others
We had a bunch of random crafts lying around after that,
But it was okay...
Because my siblings had their mom back.
...i hate you anon.❤
anyways guys sorry for no posts !!!!!! i uninstalled tumblr on my phone💔 heart broken rn.
okay bye my sillies ily goldens :33

Xanruko week day 1. prompt: despair. While I've sworn off putting my writing up on tumbIr due to its Al policy, I want to help support xanruko week, so I'll post days 1 and 3 here. The rest will be on my ao3, as some will contain content with mature topics.
fic below the cut. If you want to support me, here is the ao3 link where you can kudo and leave a comment. I'm much more active there so if you need to say something I'm more likely to see it.
here is the link to the xanruko week prompts. thank you to riza for hosting this event!
When she opens her eyes again, she knows what to do. The survival knife in the drawer, check. Composure? Check. Emotions?
Check. She’s seen them all dead before. It’s like he said— she’ll get used to it, eventually.
She has to.
She turns the corner in one swift movement, and–
“Augh!”
Déjà vu. There was something she forgot.
There’s a sort of bitter irony to this. Of course she forgot. After everything, five murder cases, twenty-three days, of course she just… forgot this. She jerks back, not from the collision, but from how overwhelming it is to feel him again. Skin on skin, bloodless, solid. No blade between them, his warmth and scent all too familiar.
Instinctively, she wants to hold him– and her heart rampages at the thought. She should smack him. Shake him down good. He betrayed her; he’s the start and end of her.
Happiness is, like all things with her, fleeting.
He’s wobbling on his feet. Oh right, he’s going to faint now, isn’t that how this goes?
Maybe if she could forgive Xander for making her care, she would apologize. But he is nothing if not utterly brilliant, and she is the fool that falls for it every time.
As Teruko loves to feel nothing at all, this transgression is unforgivable.
So as to not be cruel, she does not bother to ask about his wellbeing– she knows the answer. His first meeting with her will always start with pain and end in death. But no matter how hard she tries to act, unlike Xander and David, Teruko is not a good actor. The star of the show, but no one can really hate those that die after falling into her orbit.
She does not allow him to fall down this time. As he tips backwards, she reaches out to him— something she has always, always wanted to do.
**
Xander doesn’t let her linger on his unconscious face too long. His eye color switches from dusk to dawn, and it really is like a light turning on, except Xander always seems to have a bright facade to show her.
Out of all the actors in this show, Xander was the best one. Or maybe her rosy view was distorted by the optimism he instilled in her, the way he made her feel wanted. Like he knew all her secrets and she knew nothing at all.
“Um,” he mumbles. “Hello, Miss…”
Oh. She’s been staring.
Before her are two options. There’s the easy one and the hard one. If Teruko were a better person— if she were like a person at all, really, and not the concept of death and impermanence itself, she might have had it in her to try— because really, she’s not afraid to admit this now:
Teruko Tawaki really, really loved Xander Matthews.
And this is the lie: she is fine with him betraying her, because she knows she’ll survive in the end.
So she picks the only road she’s ever chosen— the same one. “Oh, sorry. I’ve been staring, haven’t I? It’s nice to meet you. Sorry for bumping into you earlier. My name is…”
**
Teruko Tawaki has always been the pessimist to his optimist, but she has to wonder: was it that he was always plotting to kill her? The note was the trigger, yes, handwriting that only he could have known, given that it had no effect on her or Min, but even so, nothing in his demeanor changed from the first night to the second.
It couldn’t be. That’s what she foolishly wants to believe, watching Xander introduce himself to his thorny classmates. She watches the flash of emotions, the real feelings, waits for those signs of trickery.
She wants to believe she’s doing the right thing.
She can’t.
“Ugh,” he grumbles, cheeks dusted peach pink. “They’re all so rude! What did we do to give them such a bad first impression?”
You’re kind. That’s it. You have a good soul and they want to step on it and crush it under their sin-stained heels.
But not before you crush me first.
“I don’t know,” Teruko lies. “But don’t worry. We should try to give them a chance, right?”
He smiles in return, grinning like the bright sun, and Teruko thinks of a glinting knife’s edge.
**
She doesn’t want to indulge. She doesn’t want to feel the pain of loss. Better to have never experienced than to have lost.
But she knows that is a road lost to her. He ruined her, and she, in turn, will ruin everyone and everything. And so when the scales must be tipped, and Teruko finally has a choice, she wants to be happy rather than be brave.
Because this is the truth: no matter how much good you try to fill in the world, her existence is that of evil. If evil is everything that goes against the happiness of others, if evil is everything that strips away the autonomy of others, then Teruko is evil itself. So if Xander wants to fill this world with good, his decision to try to kill her was natural— but he is a servant of platitudes, and she is the devil itself, so whether they like it or not, his defeat is inevitable. He never had a choice to begin with.
This may seem strange. In every story, “good” is destined to defeat “evil”, and Teruko has no objections to this. Maybe she should be mad; twenty years of long struggle rendered a waste, efforts mercilessly destroyed by the hero.
But love is oh so effective. God is dead and all the devil has left of her is her lookalike servant. In the short period of time she had with him, she let him in, and left clearly understanding: she was not meant for love. The effort was pointless to begin with. She is glad for it.
The rest of the killing game taught her this: it is ineffective to try not to feel. Feelings are inevitable. Care is inevitable. Every tragedy must repeat itself.
So as she watches him laugh and make jokes with the others, that wide grin, the happiness in his eye, all she can do is match his smile like a coward.
**
Teruko isn’t supposed to be this cruel. She’s supposed to at least attempt to save him. But as he pulls her into the infirmary, Teruko doesn’t want that. All she wants is to enjoy the little time he has left.
Once Eden leaves, she knows what’s coming. No matter how much she wishes for it, Teruko cannot stop time. But she can allow herself to feel. This is the one good thing Xander gave her.
He flushes when Teruko runs her fingers over his hand. “Miss Teruko?”
“You know we’re alone, right?” Then she looks him in the eye— he flinches. She doesn’t feel good about it. Teruko keeps this truth about him close, like the pain he gave her. “Why don’t you just whisper it to me now, while we’re alone?”
His throat bobs. She wants to kiss that unblemished skin. Teruko is glad and disheartened and oh so giddy for this moment. She is no closer to getting the truth she seeks, but she knows now, with absolute certainty— as it will ruin her to kill him, it would have completely destroyed him if he killed her. Maybe that’s why he foolishly walked towards death. The moment he struck her, he died.
“Sorry, Miss Teruko,” Xander tries foolishly. “I… want some time to think the plan over.”
He doesn’t try to weasel out of her grasp though. Teruko doesn’t let go. Xander lost some color when she challenged his intentions earlier, but he still looks happy to be with her. This could almost be romantic. “Miss Teruko, your hand…”
“You’re so impatient, Xander. What if I have something to say?”
He stumbles over his words like a schoolboy with a crush. “Is it… is it necessary to hold my hand while doing this?”
“Do you want me to let go?”
Xander’s face goes sanguine. “I… I had no idea you were such a tease, Miss Teruko!”
“Who says I’m joking?”
He squeaks as she brings her face closer to his. Xander is dizzyingly close, smelling faintly of the scent of soap and gunpowder. Care and violence. “You seem to get hurt a lot, Xander. This is the second time we’ve met in the infirmary. Take care of yourself, okay?”
However much this hurts him, it hurts Teruko more. Vulnerability has never come easy to Teruko. And she holds on, holds on to that flash of sorrow in his eye, that regret, and that flustered love.
She doesn’t even tell him the important thing: you are my friend. No matter what happens, that won’t change.
**
Time passes all too quickly. This is it. All good things must come and go, and this time, this is the path Teruko has chosen.
This is what despair is. Terror is realizing that you have made a mistake. Horror is realizing that you cannot undo that mistake.
Despair is choosing not to even attempt to find a way out of that mistake. Give in and love that outcome.
“Hey… Xander?”
“Yes, Miss Teruko?”
She swallows. There are a million things she could say.
I’msorryIloveyouForgivemeForgivemeIwishthingscouldbedifferentIwishIcouldhavesavedyouGoodnight,Xander.
So instead the genuinely happy girl says, “I’m glad I met you. Even if you don’t feel the same— even if you were only kind to me as a way to get me to let my guard down— I don’t regret it at all.”
Teruko doesn’t let herself observe his reaction, turning her back as his eye starts to widen with shock. The monitors are pitch black, comforting shades of darkness. This time, she’ll keep her back turned. Remember that golden happiness reflected in his eye. It’s okay, even if it isn’t. His feelings are real, and so are hers. She can trust that, if nothing else in the universe.
“So.” Teruko tries to put on a brave face, even if he won’t see it. Her stomach throbs. “What sort of plan did you have?”

——————
Cady goes back to school that Wednesday.
Her parents let her have one more day off to recover and finish the homework she had been putting off. Cady's still not feeling 100% after her episode, as Janis put it, but she can't afford to miss any more school. Or cheer practice. She's gotten more than a few threatening texts from Regina.
She runs into Janis briefly going into homeroom, since it's in the same classroom as Janis' first period. She smiles, mostly at the ground, and Janis surreptitiously brushes her hand against Cady's and gently links their fingers together before walking off like nothing happened.
Cady blushes furiously and heads to her seat. She hunches in on herself to scribble something on a piece of notebook paper she rips off and folds up. She's so focused on making sure nobody sees what she's writing that she almost misses Ms. Norbury trying to take attendance.
"Cady. Caaaady. Heron. Hello."
"Wh- oh, uh, here," she stutters. Ms. Norbury arches an eyebrow and ticks her off on her computer. Cady trills her lips and tucks the paper into her pocket.
"Glad to have you back, Cady," she says once the bell rings.
"Thanks! Uh, see you this afternoon!" Cady says, rushing out the door. They already don't have much time to get from class to class, and she has a stop to make this time.
She tries to act like she's just leaning casually against the wall and she doesn't have to be across the building in two minutes. Once she looks around to double check nobody is watching, she carefully slips the note between the slats in Janis' locker and rushes off to her class.
Hopefully she gets it.
—-
Cady looks up from her phone in fright when she hears a murmured, "Hey, sweet thing."
Janis is peeking around the corner of the bleachers, lunch in hand and a confused look on her face. Cady spotted this during a rainy-day indoor practice last week. The bleachers are completely solid, so nobody can see in. "Did anyone follow you? See you?"
"Nobody important," Janis shrugs as she puts her food down. "Whatcha doing?"
Cady sighs in relief upon hearing confirmation that nobody will see them together. She leans in for a kiss and gets a sweet little peck. "I want to have lunch with you! It's like our own little place!"
"That it is," Janis agrees with a chuckle. "How's your day been?"
"Good! I got a hundred on my math test," Cady says happily.
"Of course you did," Janis laughs. "What'd you tell Regina?"
"About what?"
"Where you are," Janis says as she takes a bite of her... probably turkey sandwich. Cady's eyes widen. Shit.
"I... didn't tell her anything," she says quietly.
Janis quirks an eyebrow. "Better come up with something quick."
"Why?"
"She's gonna grill you like a war interrogator," Janis snorts.
Shit. She's right. "Uh... um..."
"Just tell her you skipped lunch," Janis shrugs.
"Skipped it?" Cady asks.
Janis shrugs again. "I dunno. That'd probably work."
"I'll think of something," Cady hums, pursing her lips and taking an exasperated bite out of her celery stick. Janis smiles at her like she's some cute little animal.
"So... any particular reason you're slipping notes into my locker and sneaking around with me behind the bleachers?" Janis says with a smirk as she scoots a little closer to Cady.
Cady groans as she's suddenly reminded why she had done this. "I have to go to Regina's after school. We're having a costume fitting for the holiday parade."
Janis looks at her oddly. "You're in the parade?"
Cady nods eagerly. "Mmhmm! I get to be an acro elf!"
"A what?" Janis giggles.
"I get to dress as an elf and do tumbling and acrobatic stuff next to Santa's float!"
"Oh," Janis says. "Stevie loves that one. I didn't know it was us."
"They choose the best cheer team in the region to do it. Apparently this is the first time in, like, ten years that it's been North Shore," Cady explains.
Janis snorts. "That makes more sense."
"I'm really excited. But I have to spend a lot of time with the Plastics, I won't have as much time free after school," Cady says apologetically.
Janis shrugs. "It's just a parade. Once it's done your schedule will calm down a bit and we can spend more time together again. Not like we're breaking up."
Cady giggles. "I still have my knight in shining armor to come save me from the Plastics if I beckon her."
"Damn right you do," Janis smirks, leaning in for a kiss.
Cady happily leans in too, smiling to herself as their lips touch. She's suddenly very glad she totally ate it at their last practice and spied this hideout behind the bleachers from the ground.
"Might need to save you already," Janis hums as they pull apart, looking Cady up and down with a small grimace.
Cady sheepishly looks down at her bright pink crop top she'd decided to wear today. She tugs at her collar, suddenly self-conscious. "You don't like it?"
"No, no, you look cute," Janis says. Something in her tone tells Cady it's a half-truth at best. Oh well.
“Thanks," she says. Janis takes another bite of her sandwich and sprawls on the hard floor of the gym with her head on Cady's lap.
"Oh, get this- my math class this morning," she says. Cady tunes out almost immediately, stroking some stray hairs away from Janis' forehead and just watching her mouth move. It's probably nothing important. God, she's gorgeous.
What is she going to tell Regina?
I got sick- ew, no.
I had to talk to a teacher- too easy to mess up if she comes from the wrong direction. They'd get suspicious too easily.
I- oh, fuck it, I'll think of something.
She continues munching on her lunch and half-listening to Janis speak. Janis doesn't seem to notice or care one way or the other. Cady smiles and pulls out her phone to check her messages. She thinks of something then.
"And then-"
"Have you... told anyone about us?"
Janis pauses mid-sentence. "No."
"Not even Damian?" Cady asks shyly.
Janis shakes her head. "I kinda still don't believe it myself. I wanted to keep it to myself for a while."
"You don't wanna tell people?" Cady asks with a frown.
"No! No, I do. Some people," Janis says. "I just wanted it to stay between us for a little bit. And I figured I should check with you before I told anyone. But I'd be fine telling a few people now."
"Oh," Cady says.
"Do you want to?" Janis asks, sitting up and brushing her hair out of her face. Cady thinks for a moment before she nods.
"We should probably tell Damian, at least. He'll find out sooner or later anyway."
Janis sighs. "True."
"You don't want to?"
"No, I'm just preparing myself," Janis says, looking at Cady out of the corner of her eye with a small grin. "Might as well get it over with, I guess. C'mere."
Cady frowns in confusion and scoots closer. Janis pulls out her phone, opens the camera, and leans in. Cady catches on and gently rests a hand on Janis' cheek, smiling into a sweet kiss. She can feel Janis smiling too as she hears the camera shutter snap and they break apart. Janis sneaks a quick peck to Cady's nose, making her blink in shock and giggle quietly.
Janis opens her text conversation with Damian and types out a message. Cady hugs her arm and leans in over her shoulder to read it.
snarkisian: hey babe
cupboard: whaaaaaat do you want
snarkisian: Sent a photo: things have developed
Janis' phone starts ringing almost immediately. Janis frowns at it as Damian's contact photo fills the screen and it buzzes in her hand, but she hits the green button and the speaker so they can both hear.
As soon as she does, a piercing shriek rings out from the speakers. It's loud enough that Cady practically feels her brain dislodge and start rattling around in her head. She thinks she might've heard him all the way from the cafeteria, too.
As soon as that happens, he hangs up. Janis and Cady both blink at the screen for a moment before bursting into hysterical laughter.
"I don't know what I was expecting," Janis sighs affectionately as she slips her phone back into her pocket. Cady feels her own buzz against her leg and pulls it out to see several incoming texts from Damian that mainly consist of ABSKEOWIWHWJWJABDHWOWOA.
She clocks the time, then, and jumps. "Oh, shit!"
Janis startles. "What?"
"I have to go, lunch is almost over," Cady says, frantically packing up her things. "Bye babe. See you later."
Janis blinks in surprise, but returns the quick kiss Cady gives her before Cady goes rushing off. She has to find Regina before the bell rings. Not that Regina has ever felt much urge to listen to the bell.
She tries to think of an excuse as she hurries through the halls towards the cafeteria. Nothing really comes to her. She skids to a halt next to some sort of booth when she sees Regina and Aaron standing close to it.
"Hey!" she greets brightly after smoothing down her hair and adjusting her shirt. They both look at her. Aaron quirks his head when he sees what she's wearing, but he gets a faint smile.
Regina checks her nails and says, "Hey. Where have you been?"
"Oh, um..." Cady says. Shit. She wracks her brain trying to think of something. What did Janis say? "I skipped lunch."
Regina cocks an eyebrow. "Why?"
Cady smiles as she puts the pieces together. "I'm... trying to lose weight. So I look more like you guys. I just had one of these diet bars."
"Diet bars?" Regina questions. "Let me see."
Cady happily hands over the whole box of Kälteens. Regina holds it between her hands to try to read. Aaron peeks over her shoulder to try to see too.
"It's all in Norwegian or something," Regina says, looking at Cady in confusion.
"Swedish," Cady corrects before she can stop herself. "There's... um... this ingredient in them that you can't get here yet. My mom used to use them to lose weight in Kenya."
"Hm," Regina nods. "Can I keep these?"
"Sure!" Cady says brightly. She has a feeling Regina would've kept them even if she said no. Works for me.
"Now, are you getting me my candy cane?" Regina hums. Cady frowns in confusion before she realizes she's talking to Aaron.
"What happened to losing weight, those things are pure sugar," Aaron chuckles. Regina brushes his hair off his forehead and runs her fingers through it so it stays out of his face.
"But it's such a nice thing to do for your girlfriend," she pouts. "And stop pulling your hair down, you look so hot with it pushed back. Don't you think so, Cady?"
"Huh? Oh, uh, yeah, way hotter," Cady says. Two months ago that would've made Cady want to go for the jugular. Now? She couldn't care less.
Aaron sighs and begrudgingly leaves his hair the way Regina sort of styled it. "Alright, move over, since you so desperately need this candy cane."
He leans over the booth selling them to fill out one of the paper slips that'll eventually get tied to a candy cane and passed out in class. Cady giggles into her hand when she realizes Damian is the one in the budget Santa Claus costume behind the booth.
"Cady, remember, student parking lot after school," Regina says as she laces her pink-taloned fingers through Aaron's and leads him off to... wherever they're going. Most definitely not class.
"Got it! Bye," she says. She can feel her face relax as soon as they're turned around and can't see her anymore. Cady goes to the booth and leans across it. "Hi Dame."
"Ho ho ho, happy holidays! Would you like a candy cane?" 'Santa' replies. Cady laughs again.
"Hey, does Regina ever send any of these things?" she asks.
"Nah, she only gets them," Damian replies in his normal voice. "You want any?"
"One please," Cady replies, taking a pen with a smirk on her face.
—————
Cady sighs a little to herself as she follows Regina and the others into her house. Gretchen and Karen chat with Regina's mom. Regina huffs and rolls her eyes, straight off to her bedroom. Cady says a quick and polite hello and takes a handful of the offered snacks. She nibbles on the sunflower seeds while she mulls over what to do next.
Regina took the bars. As long as nobody recognizes them, she should be in the clear there. How can she make them work faster? Kälteens do work quickly, but Cady wants results as soon as possible. For Janis.
What makes you gain weight quickly? Cholesterol, but Cady doesn't want to do anything permanent. This is just to teach Regina a lesson, then she can lose the weight again. Sugar? Yeah. Carbs.
Cady smiles to herself as she puts a plan in place.
"Alright, you girls go find Regina. You'll do great," Mrs. George says after however long. Cady jumps when she remembers where she is.
"Thank you, Mrs. George," she calls as she goes running after Gretchen and Karen up to Regina's room.
"You're welcome!" the woman calls after them.
Regina tosses a hanger at her as soon as Cady walks into the room. "Here. I know, the costumes are fugly."
"I think they're kinda cute," Cady says, holding the outfit out so she can see it all.
"The hat has fucking jingle bells on the top, Cady," Regina huffs, handing Cady hers. She shakes it a little bit, and sure enough, there's a quiet jingling. "Go make sure it fits, but we really just need to work on making sure the hat doesn't hit the ground or fall off while you tumble."
"Okay," Cady says. Gretchen and Karen just changed in front of each other, but Cady sneaks off to the en-suite and locks the door behind her. She looks at herself in the mirror and takes a deep breath.
Janis was right, I do look Plastic, she thinks. Cute, though. Her loss.
She carefully takes off her clothes and tugs on the red-and-white striped tights. She has to jump to get the super stretchy material all the way up, but she manages with only one faceplant. Then comes the green dress, with gold buttons down the bodice, short sleeves with puffed shoulders, a belt at her waist, and red and gold trim around the hem with a collar to match.
It's not a great fit. Hesitantly, she unlocks the door and steps back into Regina's room with an, "Um."
Regina looks at her and laughs. "I kinda thought that would happen, these costumes are all huge. I swear they think we're all fat cows or something. My mom will tailor it for you."
Cady looks down at the very strangely fitting dress. There's a lot of space in between her belly and the dress, and not a lot in between it and her boobs. The skirt hits about mid-thigh, which is entirely too long, if Gretchen and Karen's are anything to go by. The sleeves are both uncomfortably tight in her armpits and loose everywhere else.
Other than that, it's great. At least the tights fit.
"Go change again, she'll get your measurements before you leave."
Cady nods and slips gratefully back into the restroom. She snaps a quick picture before she changes and sends it to Janis.
She's stuck with the dress over her head when she hears her phone go off, presumably with Janis' answer. She wriggles more in a ditch attempt to free herself, which gets her nowhere even faster.
Eventually, she escapes, heaving for breath and her hair all frizzy. She peels off the tights and puts on her non-elf clothes. Regina takes the hanger as she passes her on her way into her bathroom while Cady is occupied checking her phone.
jayjay: cutie
cadygirl: You like it?
jayjay: ofc i do
jayjay: my dorky little elf
cadygirl: Hey!
jayjay: do u get ears and shit
cadygirl: Yeah
cadygirl: Regina's really mad about it
jayjay: holy shit that's amazing
jayjay: reginald in elf ears
cadygirl: I don't get it I think they're cute
jayjay: i think ur cute
"Who are you texting?" Karen asks. Cady leaps a solid foot in the air as she materializes over her shoulder. "Not enough emojis."
"Um..." Cady stutters. Her immediate instinct was to blush and press her phone to her chest so they can't see. Now Gretchen and Karen are both looking at her suspiciously. "Uh... my... g- boyfriend."
"Boyfriend?!" Gretchen squeals sharply. "You can't get a boyfriend without telling us!"
"I can't?"
"Not without your best friends' approval! You wouldn't buy a skirt without asking your friends if it looks good on you," Gretchen hums.
"I wouldn't?" Cady replies in confusion.
"Exactly!"
Cady just blinks.
"So who is it?" Karen asks eagerly.
"Oh, you don't know him," Cady says immediately. Because it's not a him. It's not technically a lie. Right?
"He's not, like, thirty, right?" Gretchen asks in concern, the furrow in her brow deepening the longer Cady goes without answering.
"No! No, ew," Cady replies with a grimace. "Uh... he... goes to another school."
"Which one?"
"Um... do you remember that school we played right before Thanksgiving break? The away game when we stayed at the hotel?"
"Roosevelt?" Gretchen asks. Sure.
"Yeah. He goes there," Cady replies. "His name is... Jasin. With... an I."
"Ooh, unique!" Gretchen coos. "Is he cute? You have to introduce us soon!"
"Well, I don't think he's... everyone's type, but I think he's cute," Cady replies sheepishly.
"Aww, you're blushing!" Karen says. Cady blushes harder.
"Shut up," she scoffs. Karen's face falls. "No, wait, I didn't mean it like that-"
"It's okay," Karen says quietly.
"I'm really sorry, Kare," Cady says. Karen gives her a look Cady can't read. Not that Karen is ever easy to read.
"Don't worry about it."
Cady gently squeezes her arm. Karen smiles faintly at her.
"Do you have pictures of him?" Gretchen asks eagerly.
"No," Cady says immediately. "Uh... he's really shy, we don't, like, send pictures of ourselves much. We just like to see each other in person and text and stuff."
"Aww," they both coo. Gretchen continues, "Well, get one soon! We gotta make sure he's hot enough for you."
"I'll try," Cady giggles. "Oh, could we like... not tell Regina right away? It's all new, still, I don't want her to freak out about our image if we break up or whatever. We've only been together for, like, two weeks."
"Our lips are sealed," Gretchen replies immediately.
"But I'm not using SuperGlue as Chapstick again," Karen adds.
"No, that's okay, K, don't do that," Cady says immediately. "Thanks guys."
"Alright sluts, put on these... eugh. I can't even call them hats," Regina says as she parades back into the room. She chucks one at each of them rather aggressively. Cady's ends up hitting her full force in the face when she's too slow to react.
Regina watches as the three of them carefully push all her very expensive furniture out of the way so they have enough room to flip without fear of crashing into anything. Cady asks why they're not just practicing outside, and Regina goes on a solid ten minute rant about being seen in those costumes more than they have to. Cady doesn't speak for the rest of the evening.
—————
"Did Regina's boobs get bigger?" Cady hears the boy behind her in chemistry class ask about two weeks later, apparently as a conversation opener with his equally-jock-douchebag lab partner.
"Dude, totally," jock-douchebag replies. "Aaron's a lucky guy."
"Isn't she still dogging Shane?" bro number one asks. Cady tries to hide a shudder at the mention of his name.
Bro the second shrugs. "Probably."
Dammit, we made her hotter, Cady huffs to herself as she slides her goggles down over her eyes and turns on the bunsen burner. She looks over and sees Janis with a similarly disgruntled look on her face.
She gestures subtly for Cady to focus. Cady snaps back into the real world, this time before she can set herself on fire. She risks one glance back and sees Janis chuckle to herself, biting her lips to stop before anyone can see and ask what she's laughing about. Cady smiles to herself and buckles down to set some Doritos on fire. Not myself, thank you very much.
—————
Cady is laser focused in calculus another two weeks later. Not on calculus, but... she's there, it's fine.
She jumps and bangs her knee against her desk when Santa Claus slams the door open with a bellowed, "HHHHHOOOOO!"
"Jesus Christ," Ms. Norbury sighs, picking up her shattered chalk bits after she dropped it in shock. "Make it quick."
"One candy cane gram for Shane Oman," Damian says, adjusting his very poor quality fake beard as he hands Shane his candy cane.
He holds it between his first and index fingers like a pair of dirty underpants and leaves Shane to snatch it. Damian wipes his hand on his red velvet Santa coat like Shane has some sort of hetero cooties he might catch.
"Four for Glenn Coco!" Damian continues. "Hohoho, you go, Glenn Coco. Two for Caddy Heron!"
Cady frowns in confusion. Two? She only bought one. She takes them with a smile as Damian wiggles his way between the rows to deliver them. "Thanks, D."
Damian winks at her and moves on to deliver the next few candy canes to the lucky recipients.
Cady checks the tags on hers. There's the fake one, the one she wrote herself. She smiles to herself as she reads the little red slip of paper on the second one.
Merry Christmas my little elf
<3, J
ps ur short lolololol
She rolls her eyes as she reads the very loving message from her girlfriend and unwraps the end of the candy cane. She sucks on it as she continues pretending to pay attention when Damian leaves and Ms. Norbury can resume her lesson.
——
"Sorry I'm late!" she pretend-puffs as she stumbles her way into the gym. Regina just glares at her from across the room, but Gretchen comes scrambling over to join her as she plops her still-open bag on the ground. "God, I was in the middle of a problem when the bell rang, I didn't even have time to get packed up-"
"You got a candy cane?" Gretchen asks softly. She picks it up and unfolds the tag to read.
"Oh, yeah, Regina sent me one! Isn't she just the best friend?"
"R-Regina?" Gretchen squeaks. "Thanks for being such a great best friend. ...Cute."
"She didn't give you one?" Cady asks with faux-sympathy. She's heard it from the mouth of the lioness herself. There's no way Gretchen got any.
Gretchen shakes her head frantically. "She never sends them."
"Oh. Weird," Cady replies. "Well, you can have that one if you want. I had another one."
"I have to go," Gretchen chokes around floods of tears. Shit. Maybe Gretchen is a little more fragile than she thought.
"Gretchen," she says pleadingly, running after her friend to the bathroom.
"Well, i-if you and Regina are best friends now... then you can be in charge of keeping all her secrets," Gretchen says as soon as the door closes behind Cady.
Cady just nods. She can tell Gretchen is about to ramble, she doesn't dare interrupt her.
"Like, for example, she bought you those shoes just to make fun of you! Be-because she knew you wouldn't be able to walk in them. And she's not really blonde!"
Cady's eyes widen. She's not? Her eyes flick to the door as she hears a shocked gasp come from the other side. Was that... Damian?
"Her natural color is dark blonde. Also she totally cheats on Aaron!"
Cady almost chokes.
"Every Thursday she says she has a cheer intensive but she totally just stays behind to hook up with Shane Oman in the lion costume!"
"She makes him wear the costume?" Cady asks in disgusted horror.
"No! They're both in the costume!" Gretchen bellows, snapping the candy cane in half and dropping the pieces to the floor. Cady's jaw drops.
"Oh my god."
"And I never told anyone because I am such a good friend! I-I'm gonna go fill up my water bottle. Cover for me?" Gretchen sniffles. Cady nods.
Gretchen ducks out of the room. Damian enters before the door even closes, and Janis slams her way out of the stall. Damian hysterically whimpers, "I wear that costume!"
"Cads, that was amazing! What did you do?!" Janis says with an adorably delighted smile on her face. She rushes up and grabs Cady by the arms, spinning her around before she leans in for a kiss.
"Just a little Christmas magic," Cady responds with a grin of her own as soon as they break apart. "I sent myself a candy cane but I signed it as being from Regina."
"Clever girl," Janis coos in a horrible accent. Cady giggles.
"Okay, I gotta go! Love you guys." Janis gets another kiss and Damian gets a quick hug before Cady runs back to the gym to start their last parade practice.
————-
Cady grumbles as she wakes up the next morning. It's barely morning, the sun hasn't even risen yet. She has to be in the city, an hour away, two hours before the parade starts at 8:00. And she has to be there with her hair and makeup already done.
She does consider herself a morning person, but four in the morning is a bit much for anyone.
She grumbles as she hauls herself out of bed and stumbles to the restroom. She turns on the light and resists the urge to wince and close her eyes. How am I meant to be a jolly elf on five hours of sleep?
Cady opens her eyes extra wide, looking a little past unhinged when she sees herself in the mirror, to let the light in and hopefully wake her up.
By the time she's done brushing her teeth, she doesn't squint in the light anymore. She still grumbles sleepily as she washes her face, though.
She brings up the photo Regina sent (accompanied by many profanities) of what her makeup should look like so she can copy it. It's honestly not very different from her usual cheer makeup. Foundation, lots of gold eyeshadow, black mascara, red lipstick. Pretty much the only difference is the bright pink blush that she leaves in neat little circles on the apples of her cheeks instead of blending it up her cheekbones to look more natural. It's a little more rag doll than elf, but maybe it'll work better with the costume on.
She does her hair in two french braids, parted as close to even as she can get down the middle of her head and twisted intricately so they won't fall out after a morning of being mostly upside-down. She gives up on each braid a bit before the end, and ties the bands around halfway down instead of at the ends. Kind of a cute look, she thinks, as she fluffs out her curls at the end of each braid.
"You ready, binti? Have a Kälteen bar," her mother says when she trudges her way downstairs. Cady grabs the bar and takes a disgruntled bite out of it. She nods.
"You're sure this Regina friend can bring you home? We have to leave right from-"
"Right from the parade, I know, Dad," Cady says. "I quadruple checked, I'll make it home fine. Have fun at the vet conference."
"Oh, we will," her mother promises. "There's a keynote speaker on upgrades in euthanasia technology."
"...Cool," Cady replies.
"Right?! Alright, go get in the car. You sure you have everything?"
"Yeah. Regina has my outfit, I'll get changed there," Cady says. She looks down and brushes some wrinkles out of her Christmas jammies that Janis bought her. She smiles at the memory. My little dork.
"Time to hit the road, then!" her dad says. Cady shrieks as he hoists her off the ground and marches out towards the car.
"Dad!"
Her dad just starts bellowing the chorus to I Love a Parade, probably really irritating their poor neighbors. Cady gets affectionately tossed in the backseat, and her dad continues singing as her parents get into their spots up front and start the drive to Chicago.
————-
"Binti, we're here," her mother says. Cady jumps and snorts, bashing her head against the window she had fallen asleep against. "Ooh, be careful."
"Shit," Cady hisses under her breath, rubbing her new sore spot.
"Language," her dad chides, only half-serious.
"Sorry daddy. Have fun in Peoria. I love you," Cady says, bending at a weird angle to hug her parents goodbye. They can only stay long enough to see the beginning of the parade, so she has to get her goodbyes in now.
"We will. Be safe, have fun. No boys," her mother says, gently patting her back.
"I know, I know. You don't have to worry about that," Cady chuckles. Really. You have no idea.
"Atta girl. Go get em, tiger," her dad says, opening the door for her and sending her out. "Love you!"
"Yeah, love you too," Cady says, briefly walking backwards to talk to them. She gives them a final wave before she turns around and starts running to her team's meeting spot. "Yeesh. I'm sixteen."
Regina, once again, chucks her costume at her as soon as she's within sight. Cady manages to catch it this time, and looks around for somewhere private to change. The only place is behind some trees, so she heads that way.
Regina's mom is a talented seamstress and tailored Cady's costume to fit her perfectly. Almost too perfectly. It's so tight against her chest and her belly that she can barely breathe, and the skirt juuuuust barely passes her bum. The candy cane-esque tights are all she has left to protect her modesty.
The shoes with pointy toes and jingle bells are a recent addition, and she jangles her way back over to her friends. "Hey."
"Hey!" Karen greets, too brightly for six in the morning.
"Are your costumes, like, really tight?" Regina huffs, shifting her arms around to try to stretch the fabric a little. "They were huge, my mom can't have fucked up the tailoring this bad."
"Mine's okay," Cady shrugs. Her hat jingles for emphasis.
"Ugh, I'm gonna go see if she has any safety pins," Regina grumbles. Cady's phone pings as she stomps off through the frost-covered grass.

Cady suddenly feels much warmer as she puts her phone back into her bag. She and Gretchen glue each other's ears on and the whole team does a warmup and stretch routine together. Cady rolls out her wrists and finally smiles as she gets into her spot.
——
The parade is more fun than she was expecting. It's less intense than what she has to do at games, more walkovers and limbers than tucks and punches. She gets a little dizzy, and it's hard not to get run over by the float on the rare occasions she fumbles a landing, but it's still fun. For once, the smile on her face is genuine the whole time.
She waves dorkily when she passes her parents. They both have their phones held up to film and proud smiles beaming across their faces. They wave back just as dorkily before they duck out and are off to their seminar.
Cady doesn't get to do much in the way of the more limber skills anymore. It's fun. She kind of misses doing skills just for fun, for herself. As long as she stays in her spot she can do whatever she wants to. She does all sorts of front walkovers, back walkovers, aerials, the occasional handspring. It's refreshing.
Whenever they come to a stop is when things get interesting. Nobody wants to see a parade stuck in place, so they practiced lots of choreography for that. One of the floats ahead of them gets stuck on a corner, and Cady does a vaulted flip off of Regina's crouched form like a really, really elaborate game of leapfrog. Regina acts like she's dancing with her and whirls her back around so they're in their right spots before they get going again.
Towards the end of the parade, Cady hears a, "Hi Cady!"
She's not supposed to, but she looks over. Stevie is waving eagerly to her, her arm linked with one of her friends. Janis is behind her with a cute grin on her face as she sees Cady in all her elvish glory. Cady wiggles her fingers back in greeting, and kisses the tips of her fingers twice before blowing the kisses in their direction. Janis smiles wider and sneakily blows one back. Stevie just squeals and dances around with her friend. Cady adds a little more flair to her skills than she needs to just for them.
Things stop and start a lot more as the first floats get to the end of the parade route and have to navigate pulling off to the sides of the road or getting where they need to be. Cady and Regina do their series of tricks at least six times. They start adding little bits of flourish to it when it begins to feel boring and repetitive.
Apparently a little too much flourish. Regina does a dramatic turn before she crouches to be Cady's vault.
Cady's already running.
She has no time to stop as Regina's safety pin breaks.
And her costume comes off.
Regina screams and bends down to try to grab it. Cady slips on the fabric and goes head over heels the wrong way. Cameras are already out, pictures and videos being recorded. Apparently more people from North Shore make the trip out to see the parade than they thought.
But Cady can't hear the shutters clicking or the agitated murmuring over the pop her ankle makes as she lands, and the roaring of blood in her ears as a horrific pain radiates up her leg. No, no, no no no nononono.
One of the coaches was walking alongside the float in between them and the crowd to make sure it all went smoothly. She rushes up and helps Regina get herself situated. "You alright, Heron?"
Cady can only sob. My ankle is broken. My ankle is broken and it really hurts. My ankle is broken and I may never be able to tumble again. My ankle-
"Whoa, kid, hey," her coach says. "Can ya walk? Right flank, fall in! You're down a man!"
Cady hops and hobbles her way to the end of the route and sits down on the curb, cradling her ankle and sobbing.
"Are your folks around?"
Cady shakes her head. "Re-Regina's take-taking me home."
Her coach hums and nods. "She ran off. Hope she's okay, too. Dang, kid, that looks gnarly."
That only makes Cady cry harder. What if I just did my last flip?
"I'll uh... go keep an eye out for George," her coach says. She does have the decency to bring Cady her bag. Cady debates texting her parents to let them know, but they're probably already halfway to Peoria. And they were so excited about the keynote, she can't drag them away from that. She'll just have to suck it up.
The pain is... almost bearable. It's not, but she doesn't exactly have much choice. Her sobs slow, and before too long she's just sniffling on the side of the road and holding her sore leg.
She about jumps out of her skin when she hears a, "Caddy!"
"Jesus Christ, Janis! There's people around here!" Cady hisses. Janis' face falls a little.
"Sorry."
"What are you doing here?" Cady asks more gently.
"There's already like, seventy different people sharing videos of you and Regina falling, what the hell happened?"
"I think the Kälteen bars backfired," Cady sniffs, shutting one eye as a wave of pain radiates from her ankle.
Janis frowns. "What do you mean?"
"She's gained so much weight her costume didn't fit," Cady explains through half-grit teeth.
Janis snorts. Cady glares at her. "Sorry."
"She safety pinned it on and it broke and I slipped on the costume," Cady continues. "And I fucked up my landing and I think my ankle is broken."
"Yikes," Janis says in concern.
"She was supposed to take me home," Cady says, trying to stretch out her leg and wincing in pain. Janis winces too.
"Damian and I will take you to the hospital, don't worry about it," Janis says immediately.
"Don't- ow- don't you have Stevie with you?" Cady asks in concern.
"Nah, she wanted to go to her friend's house, I'm free of the child until tonight," Janis replies. "Can I see?"
Cady looks at her hesitantly. Janis looks back. She doesn't push. There are a lot of people around. But Cady needs the comfort of her girlfriend right now. She nods.
Janis carefully eases her stupid jingly boot off her foot, pausing whenever Cady makes a pained noise. By the end Cady has her bottom lip so firmly between her teeth she can taste blood and her eyes screwed shut. It's still not enough to stop a few pained tears slipping out and down her face.
It becomes quickly apparent that Janis has absolutely no idea what she's doing. She gives Cady's foot a gentle, inquisitive poke and pulls back like she's been burned when Cady squeaks in pain. "Sorry."
"It's okay," Cady says, looking at her through squinted eyes and trying to remember how to breathe.
"It's pretty swollen," Janis says in concern. "And bruising already."
Cady sniffs again, looking down at her stupid candy-cane patterned lap. Janis gently tips her chin up.
"It'll be okay, Cads," she murmurs.
"But what if it's not?" Cady hiccups. "What if I never walk on it again? What if I can never do another flip?"
"And what if it's totally fine? What if it turns out to just be a bad sprain and you're back on your feet in a week?" Janis retaliates.
Cady feels her lip tremble. Janis might be right.
But they both know she's not.
"They're coming, hide," Cady says when she hears the cheers coming down the road. Thank god Damian's almost here.
Janis looks at her oddly, sadly, but she obediently ducks behind the tree line to wait for the crowd of people they actually know to clear out.
"Cads! Hey, coach told me you fell, what the hell, babe?!" Damian says as soon as he sees her, sprinting full tilt over to her. "Oh, yikes."
"Is it bad?" Cady asks, feeling tears brimming behind her eyes yet again.
"It's not... great," Damian replies hesitantly. "Can you move it?"
Cady sniffles. "I don't know, I haven't tried."
"Can I?"
Cady nods. Damian carefully braces her ankle with his large, warm hand and gives her foot a gentle wiggle. Several people look in their direction at the noise Cady makes in response.
"Alright, well," Damian says in a voice a solid three octaves higher than normal.
"I'm sorry," Cady sobs.
"Babe, shh," Damian soothes. "I will donate you one of my feet if I have to. We'll go get you patched up and all that, don't worry about it."
"But how will you be a big Broadway star someday if you only have one foot?" Cady giggles wetly.
"I'll manage. Is that Janis peeping at me through the bushes over there?"
"Probably," Cady replies with another giggle. She turns around and sees a familiar pair of blue eyes poked out from behind a gnarled old tree trunk. Janis ducks back behind it when she sees she's been spotted, and Cady smiles. "Yeah. Dork."
Damian smiles too. "She really loves you. Let me text her so she doesn't get picked up for stalking or some shit."
"She does?" Cady sniffles.
"Girl, are you kidding? We haven't had a conversation where you haven't come up at least once since September," Damian says absently as he taps out a message to Janis.
Janis is close enough that they hear her phone ping and her muffled, "Shit!" Cady can't help but laugh.
"Alright, she'll meet us at the car and we'll take you to the hospital."
"Thanks, papa elf," Cady grins. Damian laughs and tosses Cady onto his back to carry her the half-mile back to the parking lot. "These bells are infuriating."
"I think they're fun," Damian replies, a hand over his heart. He wiggles his head to make his hat jingle for emphasis. Cady giggles.
"Thanks for taking me home. I dunno what happened to Regina," Cady says quietly.
"Nobody does, she disappeared after the... incident," Damian replies. Cady frowns.
"Weird."
"I took over on your side so it was still balanced, but apparently she just ran off naked through the woods. Guess you can cross that off your list," Damian says. Cady laughs.
"You make a great elf," she replies. "Your ear keeps poking me, though."
"Sorry," Damian chuckles. "Alright, madam, we have arrived at your chariot."
"'Sup nerds," Janis greets, pushing herself off Damian's mom's car with a small salute.
"Caddy gets front seat privileges, she's broken."
"Ugh!" Janis groans sarcastically. Cady giggles.
"Um, actually... can I sit in the back with you?" she mumbles shyly.
Janis smirks. "We gonna make out?"
Cady rolls her eyes. "Corndog."
"What?!" Damian giggles.
"Is that not right?" Cady replies shyly.
"Did you just call me a corndog?!" Janis cackles.
"Someone tell me what I meant to say!" Cady insists.
Damian barely manages to put her down safely before he almost collapses to the ground in laughter. "Did-did you mean horndog?"
"Yes!" Cady says. "Stop laughing, it's not funny!"
"Yes it is!" Janis chokes through her laughter.
"People are staring, shut up!" Cady hisses. "Stop laughing!"
"Okay, okay," Damian says, wiping tears from his eyes. "Get in, sluts and slurs."
As soon as the doors close, Janis and Damian burst into laughter again. Damian can barely turn the key to start the car, he's laughing so hard. "I didn't mean to say corndog, stop laughing."
"You're so cute," Janis hums, still giggling to herself. "How's the ankle doing?"
"Hurts," Cady sighs.
Janis pouts and pulls Cady into a cuddle. Cady leans into her shoulder with a wince as another burst of pain radiates up her leg. "Poor baby."
—-
After an interesting drive to the nearest urgent care, Janis scoops Cady out and carries her baby-style into the waiting room. The pain is starting to get to Cady again, and she winces and cries quietly as Janis cradles her in her lap.
Luckily, people are so focused on their own injuries or other ailments that two Christmas elves and their art freak barely catch their eye. There's a mother there with a clearly sick little boy snuffling into her shoulder, a duo of frat bros who are clearly drunk and each cradling one arm close to their chest, and an old man in the corner filling out a crossword puzzle from 2011.
"How did your hat survive that whole thing?" Janis asks as Damian plops into the seat next to them with Cady's paperwork.
"I glued it to my head," Cady sniffs. Damian drops his pen in shock.
"You what?!"
"Only in the front, I used clips in the back," Cady replies. Damian sighs and rests his hand on his chest.
"Do not scare me like that," he replies. "Cads, when's your birthday?"
"July thirtieth," Cady says softly.
"Hey, my birthday's in July too!" Damian says. "Twinsies."
Cady can't help but giggle at his desperate attempt to cheer her up. "When's yours?"
"The thirteenth," Damian says.
"Man, I'm still the baby!" Cady huffs. "Miss January over here."
"Not my fault my parents know how to celebrate Easter," Janis shrugs. Cady gasps.
"Janis Sarkisian, we are in public!"
"Whatcha gonna do about it, tiny?" Janis retaliates. "Since we are in public."
"Hmph," Cady grumbles. She cuddles closer into her girlfriend's warm neck.
"You okay?" Janis whispers against her forehead.
"Hurts," Cady whispers back. "Are they gonna see us soon?"
"Probably not," Janis sighs.
Damian goes to hand in her paperwork at the front desk. Beyond that, all they can do is wait.
-
And wait they do. But, eventually, a nurse calls Cady's name and Janis stands to carry her back. Damian follows quickly, running after them through the winding halls.
"Alright, what seems to be the problem?" the nurse says. She does a double take when she sees the elf with one shoe on sitting on the exam table. She snorts a quick laugh but bites her lip to stop herself.
"I think I broke my ankle," Cady says softly. The doctor looks down at her one exposed foot and winces.
"It looks like that might be the case, hon. What happened?" the nurse asks, taking Cady's vitals. "Cross your arm over your chest."
Cady does when she fastens a blood pressure cuff around her wrist. "Um, I was in the parade this morning and I slipped on... something. I fumbled a flip and landed on it weird."
"Did you hear a pop when you landed or was it just a feeling?"
"I heard something pop, and I can't put any weight on it," Cady says anxiously. "And it's a little numb, and kinda... tingly, I guess."
"Mm," the nurse hums. "I'm gonna try and move it a bit, you let me know if anything hurts, alright?" Cady nods and braces as the mere brush of her fingertips against her ankle sends more waves of pain flooding up her whole leg and out her toes. "That hurt?"
"Mmhmm," Cady squeaks.
"Hm," the nurse hums again. "I'm gonna get the doctor to get you an x-ray, alright?
"Thank you," Cady says. She looks down at her lap with a quiet sniffle. She shakes her other foot and humphs at the jingle she gets in response.
"You okay, Peanut?" Janis asks quietly.
"What if it is actually broken?" Cady asks desperately. "I'm the head flyer, broken bones take so long to heal! It'll be weeks before I'm back in, what are they gonna-"
"We have protocols for this kinda thing, Cads, it'll be okay," Damian says. "We get injured all the time. I broke my wrist cheering in middle school and everything was fine. You just gotta take your time to heal."
"But-"
"If it is broken and you try to do anything you could hurt yourself permanently," Janis says. "Repetitive fractures? You have to rest. And we don't know for sure that it's broken yet, it might just be a bad sprain."
Cady sighs and nods. "Thanks for coming with me."
"Anytime, babe," Damian says, gently wrapping an arm around her shoulders and resting his head against hers. Cady blinks as his elf ear almost pokes her in the eye. Janis joins in too, and gets a jingle bell up the nose.
Her little crew gets left behind as Cady hops after the doctor towards the x-ray room. She holds as still as she can on the uncomfortable table and listens to the deafening clunks of the machine as it whirls around her foot. It's so loud she's a little worried it'll explode, but the doctor eventually returns from behind the lead partition and leads her back to her room to wait for the results.
It's a very quick wait.
"Your ankle is broken," the doctor says as soon as she walks into the room.
Cady feels her face crumple, and Janis wraps her in a tight hug as Cady lets out a quiet sob. "It's okay, Peanut, shh."
"It'll heal fine, no surgery needed. We call it a nondisplaced fracture, so none of your bones have actually moved out of where they're meant to be. You just need a cast for a little bit and you should be back to normal."
"So-so I'll still-still be able to-to cheer?"
"Not for six to eight weeks, but yes," the doctor replies with a smile. Janis squeezes her tighter as Cady releases a sob of relief.
"I told you," she murmurs, kissing Cady's cheek. Cady sniffles and leans into her shoulder. She needs Janis right now.
"Technically you broke your leg, the bottom part of your fibula here, and there's a hairline fracture in part of your tibia. But they're not displaced enough for you to need surgery, just a cast and no weight bearing for a good while."
"O-okay," Cady sniffs.
"You might wanna... de-elf yourself before we get the cast on, though. Unless you want to keep those tights for a few weeks."
Cady takes the wheel of possible cast colors and the pajamas Damian hands her from her bag. "These are cute! Where'd they come from?"
"Janis got them for me," Cady says with a sniffle as the doctor leaves and Janis and Damian both turn around to give her some privacy to change.
"Oh, did she now? How very soft of her," Damian hums. Janis shoves him. Damian sticks his tongue out in her general direction, unable to tell quite where she is with his hands firmly over his eyes.
"Shut up," Janis responds.
"Stop fighting, you can turn around now," Cady says once she's back in her comfy pajamas. "Which color cast should I get?"
"What's your favorite color?" Damian asks.
"Yellow," Cady replies.
"The purple is cool too," Janis says, tapping the little swatch of it. Cady nods.
Damian leans in close to see all the options. "I like the green."
"I like green," Cady acknowledges. "The Plastics will kill me if I get anything except pink, though."
"Pfft, who cares about them? Regina did this to you," Janis scoffs.
"Because we made her gain weight," Cady retaliates. "This light pink is cute."
"Do whatever you want, Cupcake."
"Cupcake?" Damian responds immediately, accompanied with a gag.
"Look at this little faaaaace," Janis coos, leaning harder into it and squishing Cady's cheeks rather than trying to fend off her friend. Cady goes along with it too, batting her eyelashes coquettishly at him. "Isn't she just the cutest widdle thing?"
"You two are gonna ruin my life together, aren't you?"
“Mm-hmm!" Cady hums happily, her cheeks still smushed in her girlfriend's hand. Damian rolls his eyes. Janis gives Cady's squished-out lips a kiss before she lets her go and smirks at her friend.
"You're the one who was literally speechless for four hours after we told you we were dating," she responds.
"I was in shock, shut up."
"Because your matchmaking never works?"
Damian huffs. "Whatever, it does."
"Name one time."
"This!" Damian insists, gesturing frantically between the two of them. Janis rolls her eyes.
"Whatever you say, Princess," she replies. Damian smiles.
"Thank you."
The doctor returns towards the tail end of that argument and shoots Cady a confused look. Cady just shrugs a little. She hands back all the cast swatches and goes with the light pink she had liked. She does really like it, and the Plastics won't crucify her for it. Well, they might anyway for what happened at the parade, and for needing a clunky, bulky cast in the first place. But at least this'll show she has decent taste and the ability to match.
Janis and Damian each take and squeeze one of her hands as her bones are painfully squished back where they need to be and wrapped in layers upon layers of fabric. The pink shell finishes the job, and Janis asks the doctor for a Sharpie so she and Damian can be the first to sign it.
"Do it small," Cady insists. Damian shoots her a strange look, but they both sign their names in the smallest letters they can right by her toes. Janis adds a little heart by hers for good measure. "Thanks, guys."
Cady gets fit for a set of crutches. It takes a while and she ends up with kids size ones, but eventually she's clicking slowly across the parking lot and finally on her way home.
"Jan, you wanna come over?" Damian asks. Cady pouts a little. She knows he and Janis are best friends, and that they definitely hang out without her sometimes, but it's not like Damian to ask with Cady right there.
"Nah, I gotta go get Stevie," Janis replies. Damian nods. Cady is confused when they pull into Janis' driveway. She should've been dropped off first. Her house is much further out of the way. "Bye Peanut."
Cady returns the kiss she gives. "Bye, baby."
Damian gags in the front seat. "Bye, dumbass."
"Bye, slut," Janis replies, blowing him a kiss as she climbs out of the car in the most complicated way she can and runs into her house.
Damian puts the car back in gear and keeps driving. Cady is more confused when they pull into his driveway. He turns the car off and gets out, leaving Cady alone in the backseat.
"You coming?" he asks, knocking on her window upon noticing she hasn't moved. Cady jumps.
“You're not taking me home?"
"I am not leaving you alone to navigate that house with one foot. But I'll take you home if you'd rather be there," Damian responds.
Cady shakes her head. "No. No, uh... thanks."
"Of course," Damian replies. "Now come on, cripple, my mom'll make us milkshakes."
"Your mom?" Cady asks with a smile.
"Oh, shit, you haven't met her yet! Uh, be ready for like, a lot of hugs. And she might cry. She's a big empath."
"Okay," Cady giggles. "She sounds great."
"She is," Damian says with a small smile. He unlocks the door and drops their stuff in the small area for shoes and coats and bags. "Ma, I'm home! And I brought Cady!"
Stanley comes running down the hall as soon as she hears the door. Damian protectively stands in front of Cady so the excited pup doesn't knock her over, but Cady smiles and rests her crutches against the wall so she can give the sweet little thing some scritches. "Hi, Stanley! How are you, baby girl?! Oh, yes, hi! I missed you too!"
"Stanley, gentle, Caddy's broken," Damian says. Stanley actually does calm a little bit, sniffing curiously at Cady and wagging her entire rear end instead of jumping on her like she did last time.
"Hey, baby girl!" Damian's mother greets, coming down the hallway in such a blaze of glory that it's immediately apparent where Damian gets his showmanship from. Cady looks up and smiles as she wraps him in a hug.
"Hi Ma," Damian responds, hugging his mom back and handing Cady her crutches again.
"How was the parade?" his mom asks, leading the two of them down the hall. She clocks Cady hobbling after them, then. "Ah."
"Yeah, she broke her ankle," Damian responds.
"At the parade?! Oh, honey!" his mom says immediately, wrapping Cady in such a tight hug she thinks she hears a few of her ribs pop. "You poor thing! Oh, come in, come in, sit down. Damian, help her to the living room, come on now."
"Can we go to my room instead?" Damian asks. His mom rolls her eyes.
"Yes, go ahead. It's on this floor, Cady, don't worry baby."
"Thanks, Ms. Hubbard," Cady replies with a smile. She gets another tight hug and actually has to cough a little when she's released to get her breathing back in a normal rhythm.
"Of course, baby! What kind of milkshakes do y'all want?"
"Oreo?" Damian suggests. Ms. Hubbard looks to Cady, and she nods eagerly. "Please."
"Coming right up."
"Thank you," Cady says as she's off back to the kitchen.
"Don't mention it, baby!" she calls back.
"Your mom is great," Cady says. Damian nods. Cady squeaks in surprise as he hauls her onto his back and starts carrying her down the hall towards his bedroom next to the garage.
"She is."
"She's very comforting," Cady continues. Damian nods again. "I see where you get it from."
"D'aww, thanks," Damian coos. He's actually blushing a little bit, and Cady smiles as he rests her down on his cushy bed. He fusses over her like a worried mother, helping her take her makeup and ears off as Cady looks around his bedroom for the first time. She's been here before for movie nights, but only ever in the basement.
None of the actual drywall is visible; completely plastered over with posters of drag queens and black-and-white photos of old Broadway stars. Cady can barely breathe for Judy Garland and Cher and RuPaul. There's fairy lights of all colors hanging from the crown molding, illuminating and twinkling over a full wall of Playbills in protective clear plastic sleeves. The furniture is a bit plain by comparison, but it all just feels like Damian's spirit has exploded into the room. It's amazing.
"Your room is so cool," Cady says.
"Thanks!"
"You have a lot of Playbills," Cady continues. "Have you actually seen that many shows?"
"God, no," Damian chuckles. "The top row there are the only ones I've seen in person, the rest are from eBay."
"Cool," Cady replies.
"Has Janis taught you about musicals yet?"
Cady shakes her head with a smile. "She said she wouldn't be able to do it justice."
Damian snorts. "Yeah, right. She just doesn't want to sit through them."
"She doesn't like them?"
"She only watches them once a year on my birthday and if I sing a lyric that could even approach being from a musical she'll punch me in the jugular."
"Really?"
Damian nods, fiddling with the mouse to wake up the computer and typing in his pin. "You've brought a lot of her walls down. So... thanks for that."
"I'm glad," Cady replies softly. "She deserves it."
"She does," Damian agrees. He shrugs suddenly. "Anyway, what do you want to watch?"
"You pick. I don't know anything," Cady giggles. Damian nods and opens a folder full of bootlegs. He murmurs the titles under his breath until he lands on a good first musical for her.
"Ooh! Okay, here, you'll love this one. The movie is good too, but the stage production is amazing."
Cady cuddles into his arm and peeks at the file name. She squeals, "Lions?!"
"Lions is an understatement for The Lion King," Damian says. Cady wiggles excitedly as he opens it and makes it full screen. "Can you see?"
"Mmhmm. Thanks, D."
"Anytime, Little Slice."
His mom pops in with their milkshakes a few minutes in and seems completely unphased seeing her son cuddled up with a girl she's known for fifteen minutes. Apparently this is normal for him. "Thank you, Ms. Hubbard."
"You're welcome, sweet girl. Y'all just holler if you need anything, alright? Ooh, Lion King. That's a good one," she replies as she leaves again.
"Cady's from Kenya," Damian explains.
"No shit?" his mom replies, making Cady choke on her milkshake in shock.
"Um, yeah, I just moved here this summer," she says.
"Ain't that something. Alright, have fun, you two."
"Thanks, Ma," Damian says as she shuts the door behind her.
They sip at their tasty milkshakes while they watch. Cady might be in love. She's immediately bopping along to all the musical numbers and oohing and aahing over the special effects.
Damian looks at her expectantly when the curtain call is over.
"That was so cool!" she squeals. "Can we watch it again?"
Damian laughs. "I'm glad you liked it. You like musicals now?"
Cady nods eagerly. "Yeah."
"Good," Damian says with a victorious smirk. He takes a picture of them cuddled up together and sends it to Janis with a caption reading, I win Caddy likes musicals. He gets an eye roll emoji in response and clicks off his phone with a smug grin. "Let's try something else, but we'll come back if you want to after."
"Okaaaaay," Cady huffs jokingly.
They watch about four more, occasionally shifting positions to keep comfy on Damian's plush bed. The milkshakes are long gone, but neither of them care.
"Thanks for taking care of me," Cady murmurs after the last one. Damian gently bumps into her.
"Anytime. Sorry Janis was busy, I know she wanted to be the one to kidnap you."
"No, it's okay," Cady says immediately. "I love her, but she'd be so worried she'd barely let me move. Not that that's bad, she's just... a lot, sometimes."
"You love her, eh?" Damian teases. Cady blushes. "Oh, shit, do you?"
"I mean... we've only been dating for a month," Cady begins hesitantly. "But... I might... already love her, like, a lot."
"D'aaawww, my little gaybies," Damian squeals.
"Shut up," Cady scoffs.
"She loves you too," Damian says matter-of-factly.
Cady looks at him. "She does?"
"I told you earlier. This bitch will not shut up about you. I've never seen her like this. It's kind of freaky," Damian chuckles. "Always, have you seen Caddy's eyes up close? They're such a pretty green. And she's sooooo tiiiiny, she just fits in my arms like a puzzle."
"She did not say that."
"On RuPaul she did."
Cady blinks. "Did I break her?"
"Honestly? Maybe. But I like it. She's annoying sometimes, but this Janis seems... healthier."
"Good," Cady replies.
"You, on the other hand," Damian replies, looking pointedly at her left foot. Cady giggles.
"It's fixed, I'll be okay," she replies.
"You got lucky there, kid. I really thought you were gonna need surgery," Damian says.
"I did too, honestly," Cady admits.
"...And now I think about it, Regina is a little chubbier."
"Right? It totally worked!" Cady squeals. Damian laughs. "Now we just have to get people to stop treating her like the queen bee and get Aaron out of her clutches."
"Godspeed, soldier. Doing the lord's work," Damian says with a salute. Cady giggles. "Do you, like, wanna go home?"
Cady sighs. "I should."
"Bitch, is that what I asked? Do you want to or not?" Damian insists.
"I mean... it's always weird there without my parents," Cady mumbles, fidgeting with her fingers. "But I don't wanna impose."
"Hold on," Damian says. Cady jumps when he turns his head to the side and hollers, "Ma!"
"What?!" his mother yells back.
"Can Cady sleep over?!"
"Her folks okay with it?!"
"Your folks okay with it?" Damian asks Cady in a much, much softer tone. Cady nods in confusion. Damian yells back, "Yeah!"
"Then she's always welcome! Dinner's in half an hour!" his mom replies.
"Thank you!" Cady yells.
"You're welcome, baby!"
"See? Problem solved," Damian says. Cady giggles.
"You're the best, D."
"And don't you forget it."

So I've read through your ml posts and you seem to dislike the sentimonster theory. Valid, obviously, but I don't know/remember the reason? So I'd like to hear it - if it's because it doesn't make sense, because you don't like the concept, or literally any reason at all. And if it's a reason like logic, what would it take for you to like the concept? Again, it's completely valid if you don't like it at all for no explainable reason, I'm just curious because I'm not opposed to the theory and also I like your writing and what I understand/know about you as a person so I'd like to know why you feel the way you do :D
So! My issues with the Sentimonster Plot have to do with the execution, not the ideas. The ideas I think could have been solid if given proper support!
Let's focus on the downsides first:
The plot holes! There's a lot. Off the top of my head:
Adrien, in the first three seasons, was directly disobeying Gabriel's orders. Him being rebellious was such a big character trait that his introduction in Origins was him disobeying Gabriel's orders! Compare that to Season 4/5, where he does not disobey, where he follows orders. While you could argue that 'oh Gabriel just didn't use the Amok before!', why didn't he when he's clearly comfortable doing so later?
How do Gabriel and Nathalie not know that Chat is a Sentimonster? Though it is later retconned into them only being able to sense the Amok, in 'Feast' Nathalie clearly senses the Sentimonster. (I have gone on a tangent of how she had to have sensed the Sentimonster, not the Amok, because if she sensed the Amok then her knowing that Feast is a Sentimonster is a large leap in logic)
Why didn't Gabriel use Adrien's Amok in either 'Gorizilla' or 'Chat Blanc'? Even if Adrien managed to circumvent those orders through loopholes, that could have been utilized!
Adrien has been hit with Cataclysm before. His reaction was what we see from Humans, not from Sentimonsters.
While Felix being a Sentimonster was mildly foreshadowed, Kagami being a Sentimonster came out of nowhere.
There are other things though!
For one thing, there's the fact that this came with saying that all Sentimonsters are Sapient Beings. Not only does this seem unlikely given how..... not Sapient most act, but it adds in horrifying implications as that jacks up the series' on-screen kill count.
It also wasn't set up well. Not even with the plotholes, but because there was no buildup. Sentimonsters weren't even introduced until the last few minutes of the Season 2 finale! And we didn't start getting hints to Adrien being a Sentimonster until /maybe/ the end of Season 3. I compare this often to other kids' shows with twists like Steven Universe or Gravity Falls, where the twists are foreshadowed as early as the first episode.
Given the fact that we currently don't have any way to truly free a Sentimonster from the Amok's control, I do not like the narrative there. Even if Adrien is given his Amok, there's always that possibility of someone else controlling him. It would be much more satisfying if he's freed from it, whether it be by Maribug saving him or by him going all Ella Enchanted and giving himself the order to not listen to orders. But even that latter one has been proven to not work. Not to mention that, even if he manages to hold on to the Amok, the Peacock User could just dispel him in a snap.
Another thing I have with it is a more biased note rather than a criticism of Canon, but I don't like how casually the Peacock can create Sapient Life. I personally feel that the act of creating Life, even accidentally, should be a difficult process that takes time and energy and even a little danger. This maaaaaay be because I came from FMA:B. So ya know. But I feel that the Peacock casually creating Sapient Beings is too OP, and it should be nerfed by either being unable to do that, or by the Sentimonsters having /potential/ to become real, but not by default.
Now! That said!
I do like the /theoretical/ idea of the Sentimonsters! While I criticized the version in ML, I do love the idea of Sapient Life coming from some non-Sapient source! Whether it be Cloning, AI programming, some sort of Homonculus, or even just going full Velveteen Rabbit, I love that. Bonus points for the 'how do I know I'm real/alive/have emotions/etc' angst! I also do like the idea of Adrien being controlled in some way, but I want him to be able to fully break free.
So ways to fix it:
Foreshadow this earlier. Firstly would be introducing the idea of Sentimonsters at some point very early on. Mention them and let us learn more, so that we could match it to Adrien's behavior. Speaking of! Have Adrien follow Gabriel's orders more! If you want him to still be rebellious, have him be sneaky! Use loopholes and wordplay to let him say '/technically/ I'm doing what I was told!'.
Have Gabriel utilize the Amok in times where he suspects Adrien of being Chat Noir. Adrien could still utilize loopholes here to get out of it! Like Gabriel orders him 'Tell the truth, are you Chat Noir?" and Adrien, using the logic of how he's not Chat Noir right now(aka: not Transformed) says 'nope!'.
Give a reason that Nathalie and Gabriel can't sense Chat being a Sentimonster through the Peacock. Either Canon's retcon of 'only sensing the Amok' or something like 'being Transformed muddles the signal'.
So on and so forth.
Fix it so that Adrien (and Felix and Kagami if you're keeping them all) is unique compared to the other Sentimonsters. Whether it be because he was designed to be Sapient, or because something else was added/done to make him Real, have that. This would free us from the fucked implications of Maribug's killcount.
And then give us the freedom! Again, I'd prefer something Ella Enchanted-esque. But if you have Ladybug's Cure do something or drag in the Eagle Miraculous, it's fine.

Points of Origin & Paths to Take (Part 3)
1 / 2 / 3
This ‘series’ of posts isn’t dead. I’m just dragging my feet to see what second trial verdict Amane gets (and because of life stuff). I’m already going to be guessing for Mikoto and Kotoko. I’d like for Amane’s to be more solid. She deserves it.
Content warning for brain death, death of a loved one, and suicide.
Shidou & Mahiru: the Absence of Knowledge
Which will you choose / to deceive or be the deceiver?
I don’t just want to give / both giving and receiving are good things
Personally, these two intrigue me, but they don't ensnare me the way Haruka, Yuno, and Fuuta do. They were actually the pair whose 'absence of' was determined last, because I couldn't find the right word to describe what caused both their murders. Ultimately, I decided on the absence of knowledge.
My friend (the one who introduced my feral self to this fandom) and I actually disagree on Shidou’s crime. And I’m open to any disagreements on what I’m saying, particularly this one, because the absence of knowledge being the cause is kind of weak compared to the first two installments of this series. She thinks that Shidou is a lying liar who lies similar to Kazui, and that he killed patients to feed his God complex. Personally, I think he has more of a savior complex than a God one, and that he only considers himself a killer because taking his wife off of life support made him realize what he had asked all of those families of brain-dead patients to do. Had his wife (or sons) never been injured to the point of brain death where pulling the plug became a conversation he received rather than gave, Shidou wouldn’t have come to this conclusion. As in, Shidou literally didn’t know any better and when he experienced the same situation that his patients’ families were in, the man was crushed from guilt born of his newfound empathy. This theory sprouted from what Shidou said during his second voice drama and from the glitched line from the Trial One trailer:
“Not dead… Yeah, she’s definitely not dead… I finally understand what I’ve been robbing people of…”
I think that his insistence that he’s evil comes from his desire to die (and presumably to reunite with his late family), instead of him committing malicious medical malpractice. I’ve done some poking around and brain death isn’t something that can be healed. It’s beyond a severe brain injury; it’s when all brain function permanently ceases to exist and there isn’t a chance of the person breathing on their own, much less regaining consciousness. However, brain death can be misdiagnosed, even if the physician checks the entire brain. With this information, and I think that Shidou’s dedication to the Flower Person (probably his wife) from “Throw Down” is supposed to represent his devotion to proving that his wife wasn’t brain dead without a shadow of doubt, which may (probably) not be what he did for the patients in his care. Or that he probably pushed her up the line for experimental surgeries to try and revive her. Again, probably not what he did with his patients. It's possible that once his wife either succumbed to her injuries or he did take her off life support (symbolized by the Flower Person falling apart in “Throw Down”), he then fully realized why the families of his brain-dead patients hesitated to do the same and that's when he dubbed himself a murderer. You would think, Shidou’s glitchy line from the Trial Two trailer would dissuade me from ‘local man experiences empathy for the first time’ theory versus ‘manipulative serial killer’ one, but uhhhhhh yeah, let’s look at it:
“Hurry up and die already.”
I have a separate theory that involves that the Trial One trailer are the lines spoken AFTER the prisoners realize what they have done while Trial Two comes at the point of no turning back, when the prisoners doom themselves to committing their murders. Now, if I’m right… good for me, that adds credence to my belief that not only did Shidou have shit bedside manner, but also that he wasn’t doing everything he could to save his patients once he considered them beyond the point of no return. “Hurry up and die,” could have been said to a patient that was wavering between the brain death diagnosis criteria and he’s displaying his frustration with his inability to save someone else by being a callous dick, or maybe it’s his wife that he’s talking to since she’s the one kicking off his journey to empathy, and he’s asking her to die so he doesn’t have to feel the guilt of pulling the plug.
I would love for Shidou’s third video to show what exactly he meant when he said he was doing experiments in the name of science. He’s a relatively young doctor. I don’t think the hospital was letting him reenact Frankenstein. And not to sound flippant, but I think we’re probably going to see his family die in the third video. If the pomegranate/toe tag given to the older son in “Triage” means anything, it most likely will be a failed organ transplant. Maybe that son died on the operating table during a surgery Shidou pushed for. I think that Shidou, with his newfound empathy, will never forgive himself for pulling the plug on his wife and encouraging the families of past patients to do the same. I almost want to give him a Guilty verdict for the third trial, because I don’t think he’ll even heal unless he gets the rebuke he’s searching for. A little self-flagellation for the soul…
As for Mahiru, what does loving have to do with knowledge? By her own admission, she is a sheltered girl, and it wasn’t until the second music video that we got to see her boyfriend and, more importantly, how he ‘handled’ her love. Where Shidou lacked the emotional know-how to give him perspective, Mahiru lacked the practical experience to give her perspective.
I’m split between if this was supposed to be a suicide pact and Mahiru couldn’t go through with it or Mahiru, miss ‘I’ll pick up smoking if my love smokes’, encouraged and/or enabled the self-destructive habits of her boyfriend until he killed himself. Of these two prisoners, Shidou was found innocent while Mahiru was found guilty. Shidou seemed to have a crisis until caring for Kotoko’s victims gave him purpose (he seems to need to find the meaning in things in order to understand them but can’t see past his own biases). Mahiru, on the other hand, has a crisis of faith but ultimately resolves during her second voice drama that a life without love is not worth living.
I think that through all her denial, Mahiru knows she is at fault for her boyfriend’s suicide. In “This is how to Be in Love with You,” we see snapshots focused on Mahiru and what she thought of their relationship (her perspective only). Ignoring the lyrics, her song is a bop and a half and the video is fun and happy. Looking at the lyrics reminds me of what I felt when I read the lyrics to "Pumped Up Kicks” for the first time: concern. Her idea of love isn’t healthy or sustainable, contradicting her initial insistence that it was true and right. We don’t even see her boyfriend until Day 12 or so, and it’s his hand. In “I Love You”, we see him. He doesn’t have a name, but we now have a face to her victim. It’s harder to ignore the fact that her love killed somebody because now we see the effect of it.
The lyrics of her second song definitely have more bite to them compared to her first song. I do love the bridge in “I Love You”:
“Saying I love you, but doing what I did / I know I have no right, crossed and covered in sin / My love it scored an own goal, destroyed my love and me with its weight / Tell me, oh tell me, can’t I just do it right?”
I think this is the bridge. Whatever it is, the beat is great and the lyrics hit in terms of character development. And while I’m upset that Mahiru is in a lot of emotional pain over her verdict, I do think it was necessary. Her idea of what love is needed to be challenged which is what the guilty verdict did. Being in love isn’t just something that Mahiru desires (since her love misadventure is documented in a fashion magazine of a music video in “This is How to Be in Love with You” from her POV only), but something that affects her and another person. We see her boyfriend turn from healthy to gaunt in the blink of an eye. He fed her cake, and when she thinks she is returning the favor with a bigger slice of cake, it turns out that she’s feeding him rats. She now acknowledges that the love they shared wasn’t healthy, and while it was possible that she could have come around to this idea with an Innocent verdict in Trial One, I don’t think we would have seen the flashes of her skeletal boyfriend before the carousel stopped in her second trial music video. I think we would have only gotten an image of his healthy self until the very end when their unhealthy cycle stopped for good with his suicide.
In “This is How to Be in Love with You” Mahiru is in a bird cage when she isn’t in a magazine article. We get to see her clutch the bars of her cage and then turn away (confronting the idea that she could be wrong and then dismissing it). In “I Love You” Mahiru and her boyfriend are on a carousel when they’re not traipsing through the woods or snuggling on the couch in the ruined bird cage (Guilty verdict destroyed that schema). Mahiru’s insistence that it was just normal love falls apart as her shoujo filter flickers out and we see the reality of things. Hence, the cake turned rat image burned into the audience’s mind.
First, we saw Mahiru stuck in her own ideas (the birdcage), and then we saw her deal with the reality of what she has done (the shoujo filter dies and we see the carousel stop despite the best efforts to keep them going), so I think her third trial video is going to involve her moving around a lot as she heals up from her injuries and first trial verdict. She’s not going to get stuck in a mental cage or loop. At least… I’m hoping that she gets to develop the idea that she was wrong but she can get better and heal.
Just to sum things up, Shidou and Mahiru both seemed to have learned from Trial One, although this is more obvious in Mahiru. Their videos are almost guaranteed to get more explicit (or fill in gaps) in the next trial.
Shidou’s death wish is definitely returning come Trial Three. Looking through the lyrics of “Triage”, he is only fine with an Innocent verdict because his medical skills are needed. The end of the third trial means that his work isn’t needed anymore, so he most likely is going to argue again with Es for a Guilty verdict and the death penalty. Flowers are probably going to be in his third music video because they have during the first two, and I wonder if rotten fruit will make an appearance again. Shidou does seem to comprehend the gravity of what he did when he asked his patients’ families to take them off life support. Hopefully, his video will show that. That or prove he’s an unrepentant serial killer.
As for Mahiru, I’m curious as to what imagery she’ll have. Her first music video has a magazine and bird cage imagery. The second has her with her boyfriend in the forest and the ruined bird cage living room and a carousel. I want to say, now that she’ll probably step out of the cage or get off the carousel and then walk some kind of path as she takes us through what she did to drive (or, at least help push) her boyfriend over the edge. Maybe it will have a photo album motif? She could close the ‘book’ and set it down, showing that she realizes what she has done.

tbh i had to watch most of this movie with one hand over my eye and i was not. even going to reread the book because i don’t actually care about it much anymore but about twenty or so minutes into the movie? i literally stopped it and skimmed half the book finished the movie and then finished the book. so it’s possible that this influenced my whole experience of the movie but i remembered the book super well anyway and either way i think the thing i would have been most mad about is HOW COULD THEY LEAVE OUT JUNE and who tf is miguel omg. imagine deciding to combine two women into one character just because they “play the same role in alex’s life” and then not even doing it that well. nora isn’t even IN this movie she doesn’t even have a CHARACTER they just shoehorn her and pez together and give them five min of screentime. bea doesnt even have much of a character either i also thought maybe she and nora were going to be friends but no that disappeared after the first 15min. and because june doesn’t exist and because rafael luna doesn’t exist and because nora barely exists (all of whom are the main poc characters in the book btw) alex’s character is not half as nuanced as it could be. his arc about realising he’s bi is totally missing which is great…also his actor’s enunciation was very puzzling at times but i forgive him because of all the times i got distracted staring at his eyelashes and he was good at times tho henry’s actor is probably the best actor in the movie (not a tall bar btw but he’s way better than uma thurman GIRL WHAT WERE YOU DOING WITH THAT ACCENT) and it’s not that they don’t have chemistry or fun sweet romcom moments it’s just that i’m missing so much. romance. im tired of modern romance novels and movies having their leads get together super fast without spending much time on characterization and without even having much capital R-romance in the first place. where is the e-mo-tion in the immortal words of miss carly rae jepsen…like why did they leave out so much of the emails i cannot believe i watched so many random voice-overs and they couldn’t include the emails. also the small random change that bothered me the most is that they changed their first meeting being rio at the olympics to the climate melbourne conference (?????) and made their whole relationship pre-movie a lot less interesting. umm they did good with the interview and their interactions pre and post the cake but then they abandoned all of that half an hour in. do think the physical comedy is always way more fun to watch in a visual medium like that cake scene was hilarious they were just worse at the emotional beats. guys they used bad reputation 😭😭😭😭 i had to pause at that point…i had to pause and recover for ages. the get low scene contained a lot of Choices. the Choices were all very interesting and im not sure what more can be said about them. the beginning was fairly solid then everything sort of went downhill felt like i was watching a train wreck. mildly entertaining and occasionally moving train wreck but regardless a train wreck. btw let no one claim the political commentary in the novel is good but at least it slightly exists. the politics in the movie are completely spineless and extremely confused. yes it’s an amazon prime royalty romcom so what can u expect but they just hovered on the threshold of criticism. when they didn’t actually show a crowd of people supporting them or w/e but just showed the reflection of them in the window i almost started laughing. alex’s speech at the end lacked any subtlety at all and made no sense (why tf would he make a speech coming out + explaining his relationship with henry Before he talked to henry or the royal family???) the script is like constantly having characters say really obvious things. shoutout to stephen fry’s line delivery at least. there was a perfume genius cover of can’t help falling in love (it was supposed to be your song that played there anyway???). what more can be said.
