Sometimes I wanna draw and then I realise I can't draw
Anyway. WIP! I feel like this'll be fun if I keep going but I have a tendency to lose all motivation if I leave it so I usually do things in one shot. However, I need to go to bed.
Tumblr media
I feel like this is a lot of research that people will never see unless they themselves are Mexican but one of the reasons I make/draw things like this is so people feel seen. I looked over a couple things for this, quite fun! This is supposed to be a chiapaneca dress, but I am not used to this more "realistic" style so the dress actually needs to spread out more. It's so pretty though! Will either be very fun or very torturous to colour
This is Paloma! I haven't started on her wings and at this point I'm not sure how to add them in. She's Mexican and was a fashion designer. I'm using that as an excuse to continue putting eyeliner on Alexis, who she is friends (?) with. She's older than him.
I have seen somewhere that Spanish Spanish and Mexican Spanish are slightly different, the two should still be able to communicate. I don't know what you call a "big sister/miss" in Spanish, or if that's even something you do. I guess Senorita would be it? I'm trying to convey that Alexis is showing respect to her though, so that feels like it's not it.
I'm debating between wing styles also. I think colourful wings (Like a parrot) would be pretty, and not as common as dove wings (Which are her namesake). Also it was while I was looking those up that I found out the Mexican flag has an eagle on it! The golden eagle wings sound pretty interesting, if a little bit drab, but having her be tied to the national bird would be fun I think. And lastly, wood pigeon wings, which are also her namesake, only in Latin.

"Wheels" Cartwright, a portrait done for my Call of Cthulhu campaign.
--------
He's... technically from the SCP Wiki, but... he never really appears? From what I've been able to gather, he,, only appears in like one article, and he dies off-screen before he's even mentioned. So naturally I made him one of the most plot-important characters in my ongoing campaign. As one does.

Researching Games You Can't Access
I don't care if people don't actual want this or not, but I felt like putting down some sources so that people can experience or learn from games they do not own. I'm going to assume that you can't access games for whatever reason and you aren't just going to emulate it (no judgment either way from me).
Zelda Wiki
Bookmark this link right now! This my go-to when I need to brush up on some info, like who has what items, which enemies come from which era... spelling monster names because I never get lizalfos right on my first try ... I go here first! Go to the link provided because that wiki is not affiliated with Fandom, which makes easier to read because you'll have more article than ad. If you click on any of the titles in the main page, it brings you to the article about the game which gives you a pretty good synopsis and introduction to the characters.
I also like to go here for the galleries for character art.
I say click around and have fun!
Youtube
If pictures aren't covering it and I need more information or a better idea of the landscape that the pictures are giving me, I go to Youtube and find a playthrough. You can watch somebody play the entire game, 100%, and if you desire, with absolutely no commentary from the uploader.
I needed to brush up on Faron Woods from Twilight Princess so I typed in 'twilight princess faron woods walkthrough' and looked through a few videos to find exactly what I needed. I even took some screenshots for the minimap to use for myself later. I haven't gotten everything I needed from Youtube just yet but I'm pretty happy with what I got so far.
Tumblr media
Zelda Dungeon
I think I'm kind of attached to this because I used it when I was young, but Zelda Dungeon has pretty good walkthroughs that can also provide more maps and pictures.

New from RECAP Weekly!!! An Exclusive Interview from Hermitopia's Emperor?!?
for the third week of @shepscapades ’s hermitcraft character design event, i offer grian as an empires smp member!
ok so first off, that head. thats just p03 from inscryption. but grian. it fits! but also! go play inscryption go go its on sale Right Now (until june 30) go play it its so good then go watch this video afterwards join my fandom please please please join us
ok back to hermpires! so i originally was gonna take an empire from s2 and just insert grian into it, but while browsing through the esmp s2 wiki i came across/remembered hermitopia and my brain went yep! this one. so i thought a bit about what grian would do if he was an empires smp member and how hermitopia would happen, and i think grian would crash the economy on purpose. i mean it almost already happened when the hermitpires crossover happened so i dont think im too far off. i think grian originally exported something simple, like maybe sugarcanes or mud, something easy to farm yknow, but then i dunno got bored or something so he made a couple more farms. then kept making more farms. then the hermitopia we all know and love happened!
actually maybe hermitopia isnt grians first empire. i think grian has a separate empire but decided to invite his friends to help him make some farms and then it just kept going. then hermitopia happened. i like the collaboration aspect of hermitopia so i think thats how that happens. hermitopia isnt necessarily grian's but its under his command so it gets called his. (isnt there a word for this? was it vassalage? i think its vassalage)
with that in mind i went with a robot-y grian because grumbot and a snazzy cool suit because business man (sidenote im looking over my pre art notes and one of them is just capitalism man and. yeah! not wrong). i gave him more steampunk-y wings than the usual feathery ones cause that fit better. i gave him a crown not really sure why but it fits since without it the design was more Just A Guy but with it he's more Emperor yknow. the buttons have a g on it because he would and an (attempted) gold trim cause that looked nice and fancy. originally he was gonna have four wings cause fun fact four wings is part of my base grian design but four wings kind of crowded the drawing so i didnt include them (sad) and i also didnt include the tail hes supposed to have because i couldnt find a good way to add it in with the pose. but in my heart he has both four wings and a tail
now why magazine style artwork? i 'unno. i thought itd look cool. and it does!! it looks SO cool!!! im so proud of it. recap magazine!! because of course im gonna make a hermitcraft recap reference are you kidding me recap is practically already a magazine reporting what gossip is happening on the hermitcraft server on any given week. its very specifically volume 9 issue 34 because thats when the crossover happened season 9 week 34 babey we love little esoteric details hell yeah!! i looked up how magazine covers work and its supposed to be like, main article big and smaller supporting side articles just kinda floating around so i did that!! and i made them funney references because of course i did! local bard catches scurvy because you cannot convince me that oli orionsound would not catch scurvy he would. does god is gay is a reference to that does bruno mars is gay nonsense article that makes me laugh everytime specifically in reference about mr smallish bean because he. has so many children. and none of them as far as i know from the lady server members theyre all lovechilds from gay lovers its hysterical and hilarious. quit your job join our sun cult is about the dawn empire because thatse the vibe that empire gives me and i think its funny. also!! thats hermitopia!! in the background!! i got the image off of the empires smp wiki and just Biggen'd it and it makes a bomb ass background hell yeah ^-^!!
also version with no text here lookit it!!

original callout post is by @menheratic !! if you want more info, please ask them. i am merely reuploading the original callout post of ezaki. please do check out the link of the jp community calling him out in 2019 ^^ https://togetter.com/li/1327770
! The following post talks about the various bad things that Menhera-chan's creator, Ezaki Bisuko, has done.
Here a japanese summary of all the shit he did so far, including but not limited to:
• registering Yamikawaii as trademark
• sending his fans after gyaru YouTuber Usatani to harass her into a suicide attempt over unknowingly buying a shirt with stolen PPG fanart he drew
• himself buying products with stolen art, even promoting their sales, because it’s totally ok when he does it
• the reason why Usatan’s original design was changed aka it was a ripoff of Cult Party’s iconic rabbit mascot that was designed by their artist Maromika-chan
• wrote a whole guide on how to legally get away with sex work as child
• proof of him tracing art for the more detailed MCH artworks
• how he attended the Menhera Exhibit only to smear misogynist bullshit with blood on maxipads
• complaining about how anime for little girls are evil feminist agenda TM because ain’t nobody need men to be saved anymore
• boasting about being a fashion designer only selecting the finest fabrics for his merch when it’s actually made by the japanese equivalent of Redbubble
• “parody” works featuring child characters like Chibi Maruko-chan prostituting themself, the message being all women are whores regardless of age for the right amount of money
• the small “terms and conditions” shield he has at his con booths where you agree that you need to buy anything you touch
• how he setup an earthquake victim fundraiser only to keep the money
• telling his english fans they are not allowed to use any of his art for private use, like as icon, unless they pay him
• how he wants to move to the US when he turns 30 because of all the evil haters TM in Japan
• copyright claiming everyone left and right
• japanese Menhera speaking out about he keeps hurting the community
In regards of the maxi pads:
TW, CW // nooses, misogynistic text in red on maxipads
Tumblr media
Our favorite being the second row second one, “Abortion is murder”.
Some more recent event: When he started harassing and hating on disabled people after Tokyo Fashion translated a Tweet of his because being disabled is discriminating yourself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s like a trainwreck that refuses to end, now with 100% more crypto on NFT while shitting on those who warn about the dangers.
Tumblr media
His NFT sales can be found here: https://foundation.app/@bisuko_ezaki
For some reason, after 7 years, he also decided to re-release the infamous wrist-cut bracelet to sell at events. The leader of the Neo-Decora group bought one for example:
TW // Bracelet that imitates sh, includes blood
Tumblr media
Also keeps doing collabs with “Tokyo Uragawa” under Yamiko so Seigi (Mental illness is justice), which focuses on self-harming girls as fetish objects.
TW, CW // drawn sh
Tumblr media
Recently, he also wrote a long-article on his definition of Yamikawaii:
https://harajuku-pop.com/67775/
Tumblr media
Still not sure where overseas people got “this is about mental health awareness” from, might be based on mistranslations because the word for mental health and illness is one in the same, and his definition is about glorifying mental illness. In fact, this is why he was banned from Tumblr because he kept posting other people’s self-harm photos to his aesthetic blog Menherabusu.
Next up: Made suicide baiting posts over his following decreasing in the hopes of getting attention, fans sent him photos of cute animals to cheer him up, and he decided to post about destroying the pictures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tbh, this list could go on forever as he does this kind of bs on an almost daily basis now, but apparently people don’t care enough to stop throwing money at him.
Meanwhile the Japanese community made a whole Wiki for tracking all of his drama considering how much it is by now.
https://ezabisumatome.wiki.fc2.com/
TW // mention of shotacon
Decided to nickname himself Shotabi, the name being a combination of Shotacon and Bisuko, while using nsfw anime edits of male child characters in sexual situations as decor for his selfies.
Tumblr media
𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐝:
Is it ok to still like Menhera-chan?
𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫:
Sure, the problem is really only Ezaki himself and his increasing problematic remarks fueled by his ego, the manga is a lot older than him being like that.
Fun fact: Ezaki actually hates Menhera-chan because it's the only thing he ever gets approached for by the media, he constantly rants about this on Twitter. If you have noticed, he barely makes new MCH content anymore (unless he gets paid for it) and mainly reposts old artworks and fanart (without permission) instead because it's the only way he can still get attention as his other works, like the misogynist Manapisu, which is just him hating on women as "dumb wh*res" as a manga, flopped badly.
Just try to not fund his bs by buying new goods.

Bestiaryposting Results: Choglaem
First, it seems that Tumblr's search function is flawed in such a way that just searching the tag doesn't actually get all of the results. So if you drew something for this round and it's not in this post, let me know and I'll put it in a reblog. Same applies to previous (and future) rounds.
Anyway, it's now time to look at the results for the Choglaem! Anyone who doesn't know what that means is encouraged to look at previous posts in this series, collected at https://maniculum.tumblr.com/bestiaryposting .
And here's the link to the entry people are working from:
Now, let's get into it. As before, these are presented roughly in the order that people posted them. (I'm going to go through the tag on Tumblr's regular search, then again on the alternate search method someone suggested, so any that only show up on the alternate source are going to be at the end.)
Tumblr media
@embervoices (link to post here) decided to show that the Choglaem is bigger than all living things on the earth by... having it fight Godzilla. Perfect. Inspired. Love it. No notes.
Tumblr media
@mobileleprechaun (link to post) has helpfully labelled their drawing for us, which I enjoy. Also the interpretation that the tongue through the blowhole is a lure used by an underwater predator is a good one -- honestly, putting something this large in the water just feels more plausible, you know? In their tags, mobileleprechaun describes this as "sort of a dinosaur snake tsuchinoko", and I had to Google that last one, so let me show you the best result from that ...
Tumblr media
(If anyone else needed that word defined, it's a creature from Japanese folklore that does actually look a lot like a fat snake, but I'm pretty sure it's not just a fat snake. There's a (disappointingly brief) Wikipedia article about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsuchinoko)
Anyway, the drawing is great! I have no idea why Saddam Hussein is there; you'll have to ask mobileleprechaun.
Tumblr media
@coolest-capybara (link to post here) has given her Choglaem wings to aid in causing the air to become turbulent. The medieval stylization is pretty dead-on, I have to say; I swear I've seen those trees before. And I think this Choglaem may actually be the closest to the drawing in the Aberdeen Bestiary out of all the submissions we got, so coolest-capybara is clearly quite good at thinking like a medieval artist. The post linked above contains a brief explanation of her design choices and also a link to the medieval illustration that elephant is based on.
Tumblr media
@silverhart-makes-art (link to post here) has once more done a very realistic-looking depiction of this week's beaſt. According to their post, part of their inspiration was an oarfish -- and I have to say this is pretty believable as a terrestrial version of an oarfish, so well done. I'm impressed by this one, which manages to look cool and dangerous but also kinda cute -- I think the tongue-through-the-blowhole part of the description makes all of them look a bit goofy in an endearing sort of way. The post linked above describes their design decisions, including a brief diversion over round pupils vs. slit pupils in snakes.
Silverhart also mentions that the nonsense-names I'm using sound like the names of mythical animals in a fantasy novel, so I feel I should confess what my process for randomly generating these names was. I've got a Goblin conlang that's been sitting in my pile of works-in-progress for years; I just fed the phonology from that into Zompist's gen program (link here), then picked out several dozen of my favorite results. So that's why they sound like kinda-plausible words.
Tumblr media
@sweetlyfez (link to post here) has drawn us a Choglaem who is having problems. Or, I don't know, maybe it meant to knot itself up like that; who am I to judge? Either way I think it's cute. Just look at that face. A brief overview of her design decisions is included in the linked post; I think the chicken crest is a pretty sensible call given the source material.
Tumblr media
@pomrania (link to post here) has made some creative choices with their version. I like how they've decided that if the Choglaem kills with its tail, the tail should have something at the end rather than just... you know. A tail. That tracks. "The tail ends in a fist", specifically, however, was not something I saw coming. The crest looking like an emo hairstyle is funny, I think, and the angry elephant is great. The expression on the Choglaem's face is suspect to me; it looks like it's having too much fun with this. The linked post above includes an early draft, and itself links to a post with a detailed account of the artist's thought process and some additional sketches.
Tumblr media
@miapcain (link to post here) has... wait, hold on, look at that border. That's gorgeous. Had to acknowledge that before moving to the inside of the frame. Anyway, Mia has given her Choglaem legs, which might seem odd for something described as a "snake", but actually isn't out of the ordinary for a medieval bestiary -- the authors tended to play a bit more fast and loose with their categorization of animals than we do today, and there are indeed examples of animals with legs being called "serpents" or "snakes". (I assume the artist knows this, I just want to share that with the rest of the audience.) Anyway, the drawing style is great; I like the stylized landscape and the muted colors. That elephant is definitely modeled after a medieval elephant -- I swear I've seen it before -- but I couldn't tell you which one offhand. Anyway. Love the vibes here. Not sure why the tongue is a vine, but it's a cool design feature.
Tumblr media
@rautavaara (link to post here) has gone an entirely different direction with this one, and I can kind of see the steps. Snakelike creature, kills with its tail... what if the tail it kills with is a snake. As a result, we have this chimeric "bovid-lion-snake beast", as the artist describes. It definitely stands out from the crowd, and looks menacing as hell. Rautavaara continues with the cool frames and stylization, and I continue to appreciate them. Kind of an art-deco feel on this one.
Tumblr media
@karthara (link to post here) gives us a big snake with a somewhat aquatic-looking fin-crest, grappling with an elephant in a very believable manner. That is a quality depiction of a snake fighting an elephant, no mistake. And like I said before, a kind of aquatic look feels right for something this big. The linked post contains a short description of the design decisions.
Tumblr media
@gradling (link to post here) apparently also had the thought of "if it kills with its tail there should be something dangerous on the tail", and made the excellent decision to give the Choglaem a thagomizer. That's amazing and I love it. The crest also looks quite good. I don't have anything else to add here. Thagomizer. Brilliant.
Tumblr media
@moustawott (link to post here) has done this very cool, kind of celestial-looking Choglaem. I like that its pose is evoking an infinity symbol. And, of course, it is in its natural habitat:
the skies
A brief explanation of design choices can be found in the post linked above.
Tumblr media
@treesurface (link to post here) has managed to really evoke the size of this thing even though it's the only thing on the page, which I think is quite good. Also, the brief discussion of their design choices in the post linked is pretty interesting, and honestly that's what I want to highlight for this piece, so go check that out.
Tumblr media
@scarlettbookworm (link to post here) has given us an elephant apparently in the moment when it realizes it's about to be attacked by a Choglaem. In order to allow their Choglaem to lurk despite its size, they've given it camo-pattern scales, which I think is clever. There's a pretty good explanation of their design choices in the linked post, which I think is worth reading.
Tumblr media
@cheapsweets (link to post here) apparently did this with a fountain pen, which I think is very cool. I like the oarfish-inspired crest, and the very menacing face, and the elephant being ambushed. However -- and I realize I've said this like three times in a row now -- you should check out the linked post to read the artist's explanation of their design decisions. They describe it pretty thoroughly and I think it's more worthwhile to read their account of what they've drawn than it is to read mine.
Tumblr media
@strixcattus (link to post here) posted this while I was typing this round-up, so this will be the last result from Normal Tumblr Search. They've given us another "there should be something dangerous on the end of its tail" interpretation and drawn their Choglaem with an ankylosaur-style club, which I think is excellent. As per usual, their post includes an amazingly detailed modern-naturalist-style description of the animal in question, which I always enjoy. It's exactly my jam. (That bit about where the largest Choglaem lives... is that a reference to something? It feels familiar.)
All right, I'm now looking through "#choglaem" on @findtags's search system, and it is a bit different, oddly. There are fewer results than in the regular Tumblr search -- only six of the above images show up -- but it also has one that doesn't show up on the normal search! Dammit tumblr.
Tumblr media
@hairycarrot ... whom Tumblr will not let me tag? what the hell? [edit: the tag works now that i’ve posted this, but the editor seemed to think this blog wasn’t real] um... (link to post here). Anyway, they've done this neat stylized thing that kind of looks like pastels? I don't know art, that's just what it looks like to me and I like it. I also enjoy the Choglaem being coiled up like a spring -- I know it's because it's a constrictor and showing it in coils is a good way to communicate that, but I still like the look. Very pleasant-looking depiction of an elephant being ambushed by a giant snake.
All right, time for the reveal. Here's the Aberdeen Bestiary drawing:
Tumblr media
Yep. That snake has legs and wings. So everyone who added limbs was in an appropriately medieval mindset. It doesn't seem to have a crest, though, and I don't see any blowholes. And it's attacking with its bite more than with its tail. Honestly, I think y'all read the entry much more closely than this artist did.
But maybe they were also working with more preconceptions.
Because you see.
This is the entry for the Dragon.
Yeah, that's not what I was expecting from a bestiary description of a dragon either.
The interesting thing about it to me is that it's absolutely not what you generally see in fictional depictions of dragons in medieval literature. The bestiary entry is very firm on the idea that it's not venomous, it's a constrictor, it kills with its tail -- and most medieval dragons I've read about are highly venomous. Some of them aren't even that large; they're dangerous for their venom rather than their size. So maybe this is a bit of medieval mythbusting -- "no, guys, real dragons actually don't have venom at all".
And yes, this means there's historical precedent for the green & black dragons in D&D; dragons being so venomous they spit, breathe, or blow out poison instead of having to inject it with a bite is a pretty common motif in medieval dragon stories. I think a lot of people think of those as just variants on the classic fire-breathing version depicted by the red dragon, but actually there aren't that many fire-breathing dragons in medieval stories as far as I remember. (I would do some research on this, but I wanted to have this posted like two hours ago, so you're just getting what I remember off the top of my head instead of proper sources, sorry.) To my understanding, the classic fantasy dragon breathes fire because Smaug breathed fire. And Smaug breathed fire because the dragon in Beowulf breathed fire. But the Beowulf dragon isn't actually representative in that regard; the venom-spitting dragon is more common as far as I've seen. (No word on lightning or cold, sorry blue and white dragons.)
Anyway, there's probably room to reintroduce the constrictor dragon that kills with its tail. What colors haven't already been used up in the various monster manuals, splatbooks, &c.?
I'm rambling. End of post.

"In later life, the artist took to painting trees as if they too were lonely beings."
Léon Spilliaert (1881 – 1946) was a Belgian symbolist painter and graphic artist.
At school, Spilliaert studied the philosophy of Nietzsche and Schopenhauer and began to read the claustrophobic stories of Edgar Allan Poe. At the age of 18 he started a degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in nearby Bruges, but illness seems to have stymied his plans and he never finished the course. Perhaps by way of consolation, his father took Spilliaert to the World’s Fair in Paris, in 1900, and bought him the large box of coloured pastels that is now in the Mu.Zee in Ostend. He used them as subtly as Seurat, leaving the white paper blank for a pencil of light stealing across a street or the glowing disc of the moon. Grey, black, Prussian blue, ultramarine – all the dark pastels are worn down, the warm colours almost untouched.
Read a good article https://www.theguardian.com/.../leon-spilliaert-belgian...
Spilliaert was born in Ostend, the oldest of seven children of Léonard-Hubert Spilliaert, a perfumer, and his wife Léonie (née Jonckheere). From childhood, he displayed an interest in art and drawing. A prolific doodler and autodidact, he was predominantly a self-taught artist. Sickly and reclusive, he spent most of his youth sketching scenes of ordinary life and the Belgian countryside. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Léon_Spilliaert

TW - just a vent about fandom stuff.
I feel kinda sad about how some creators in the CoD fandom have now abandoned creating content for the game series due to the demanding nature of other fans who used to consume their content. (fics, art, etc)
Like, these artists/writers in the fandom write fanfics/create art, FOR FREE OF COST and dedicate SO MUCH TIME AND ENERGY to their craft despite not getting much in return, only to deal with senseless hate, ignorance, stupidity and get treated as content generation machines; instead of actual human beings with jobs and studies and friends and families that need their time and attention as well.
A lot of us folks who write or draw do this as a hobby. As an outlet for our creativity, and we find this community for the media we are currently fixated on and we create things inspired by it cuz it brings us joy. IT MAKES US HAPPY SO WE CREATE CONTENT FOR IT!!! And then to see the same fandom/community and their horrendous behaviour driving away the creators from the fandom and the media itself is just....sad. Very disheartening.
Like I miss so many of the creators who have just given up on CoD cuz of this issue. Their works have inspired me to start writing again. They make me wish I start learning how to draw and paint again too. Their works have touch my soul, and made me happy - gave me something to look forward to every day.
But I'd much rather they leave the fandom and take care of themselves and their life, than to succumb to this weird pressure fans and fan-content consumers put on them, y'know?
Plus recently, I've seen a lot of racist and stereotypical prejudices from some CoD fans (and even some creators). I know a lot of them are new to the fandom, I was too. But I took an active effort to learn more about this game series. (and it's an ongoing effort cuz I cannot afford to play the games so I have to settle for wiki articles, gameplays, and comics) And I see so many fans not give a shit about it. They treat these characters as blank canvases to fulfill their hypersexual fantasies. (I like me a good smut fic or two, don't get me wrong) But that just makes it impossible for newer fans to get to know more about the lore and the characters. I had just finished watching the campaign for MW, and let me tell you, there are so many complex missions, characters and storylines to explore and depict through fanfics, and it's insane so many people disregard it for their whimsies so easily. That will just stunt your growth as an artist/writer! Read up on the lore, watch the game plays(the OGs and the remakes!) , maybe even read the comics!!! I promise you won't regret it ever!!!
Also, please! For all that is holy, stop putting these complex fictional characters into restricted boxes and label them. That just makes them so one-dimensional. Like -
Soap is not always cheery and bubbly and your fellow bestie. Simon is not an abuser/emotionally dead asshole just because he has a hard time expressing his emotions like everyone else. König, despite the lack of storyline/lore we have on him, isn't an uwu social anxiety babygirl, damn it. Stop excluding Gaz from your HCs and fics! He's a complex man with so many interesting things to explore about his overall story and psyche as a part of 141. He's not always begging for Price's approval either, he can and has objected to how questionable their methods have been regarding their field/work. Stop excluding Gaz from 141 stuff! It makes you look like a POS, and a lot of the people who exclude him are doing so for....pretty racist reasons. As a POC, this shit sucks balls. Also stop stereotyping POC characters in CoD - Alejandro, Rudy, Valeria, Gaz, Farah....just stop. Their ethnicity or race should not deter you from writing about them in a way that doesn't come across as prejudiced and ill-informed.
Also, not necessarily a rant, but please consider/remember the fact that the military has always been a bit of a morally dubious field of work irl, and just cuz CoD is military-centric and features characters who work in the army or PMC and take out bad guys - that doesn't take away from the violent history military has and how they have contributed to the deterioration of many countries (mainly in the Middle East). Heck, even these characters in the CoD games have done extremely unethical things and employed treacherous methods in order to get the job done. These characters may be good people in fiction, but that doesn't mean that they have done great things or have always stayed morally pure. Explore the dubious nature of it all - explore how dark and harrowing it can be for them and for the people that unwittingly or knowingly get involved in their work. It's dark and twisted but it's crucial since it's inspired from our world and it's necessary for us as humans and as artists to explore such themes and analyse them! It's crucial for the soul!!!

so i’ve been looking through the role atlas since i read your post about the covers and so far i’ve seen a few interesting? things and so starting off with blonney
Tumblr media
(in the arcanist magazine) her cover is worded differently compared to other arcanists. it says ‘an arcanist work’ instead of the usual ‘an arcanist’s work’. like the ‘a supernatural work’ thing you found. as we know, arcanist’s work pretty much means a pure-blood(?) arcanist, or at least brought to sentiency by an arcanist (in darley clatter’s case, to name one).
‘arcanist’s’ implies there being a creator of that arcanist, which would probably be their parents. but blonney’s only says ‘arcanist work’, so she fits into the category of an arcanist but it doesn’t mention anything about her ‘creator’. maybe she somehow acquired arcanum powers and was originally human? but then that would be in the infected’s territory now. (i don’t know blonney’s backstory so i don’t know if there’s an explanation found in it, but i might research it when it’s not in the middle of the night).
anyway, her exhibition thing is also worded differently. usually, it goes ‘exhibited in…’ etc etc, but hers says ‘first put on exhibit… remained on display…’. i think, for the rest, exhibited means how long they’ve lived, or at least something like that. that includes the possibility that they may have been reversed during the years they’ve lived in due to the storm, safely assuming that they have been affected by it, so the foundation can’t exactly track it properly. but based on the wording in blonney’s cover (‘remained on display’) it could mean that blonney hasn’t gone through a storm yet (again i dont know if its been proved or not because i didnt pay attention to the last event), so the foundation has pretty much been able to track her ‘exhibition’ and movements for the past years (1990s-2010s, it seems).
this is getting a bit long so im gonna have to cut it short here ! majority of this is just me spitballing and being incoherent at 10pm, methinks, but i want (no pressure) to hear your thoughts on this!
aand and and eating your art. your art and writing are very edible. i dine like a king whenever i see you post
oh hello and tysm for the ask, I love discussing this stuff!
I think I wrote that post the day before the release of the A Nightmare at Green Lake event, so I didn't take those characters' profiles into consideration! But now that you brought it up, I'm looking and comparing profiles, only the characters released during THAT event seem to have this small difference?
I don't have Jessica, but I do have the other three - so for reference, here's Horropedia and Tooth Fairy's profiles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their wording matches Blonney's, and looking at the fandom wiki's article for Jessica, she also seems to fall in line with this little change.
Tumblr media
Overall, this seems to be a small mistake from the translation team, since no one else has this sort of wording?
I only have Diggers from the previous event to this one, the Theft of the Rimet Cup, but Pickles and Melania are consistent as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The same can be said for the current event, Journey to Mor Pakh.
Shamane releases in February, but I think we can assume his Cover profile will follow the same regular pattern as the rest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have to admit that I entirely ignored most of the Theft of the Rimet Cup event because the plot was extremely boring to me, so I can't talk about what happens in there in detail to start theorizing and whatnot - but I did read A Nightmare At Green Lake.
When first reading your ask, I thought that maybe there was a shared theme between the characters that could explain this little difference - like how in A Nightmare at Green Lake, the most prevalent theme is that of belonging.
In Blonney's case, she had to act as a human despite her arcanist heritage because of the benefits that came with a human identity, as well as the fact that she could play into the "dumb, blonde bimbo" stereotype and get away with anything because of her family's connections.
As for Horropedia, he was adopted by a human man - his grandfather who introduced him to horror movies - and a lot of his voicelines hint towards him not being able to fit in within the Foundation's standards and getting into a lot of trouble because of it, hence his admission into Vertin's group at the end of the event.
Jessica is implied to be a product of Zeno's crossbreeding between a "changeling" and a "North American deer woman" - being the only one of her kind, plus the fact that she only has critters to keep her company, cause her to be lonely and extremely attached to Blonney.
Tooth Fairy's specific backstory/event is a little blurry in my brain, but I remember that she comes from a very famous arcanist family - the Campbells - whose connections allowed Tooth Fairy to study something related to arcanists health? But she wasn't taken seriously and she discovered that her human mentor was corrupt, leading her to abandon that route and become a dentist for the Foundation (but feel free to correct me!)
So the shared theme of belonging was there, I could argue that hey, the wording is different because none of these characters' "creators" - in this sense, not exclusively biological but those in charge of them - are true arcanists. Blonney's parents faking their human status, Horropedia's human grandfather, Jessica's existence being a product of science gone wrong, Tooth Fairy's mentor being a corrupt human, etc.
But then, we find this exact type of character and themes in Journey to Mor Pahk - Kaalaa Bauna hides her status as an arcanist during her time at the university because she knows the stigma that she will face and how little respect arcanist related research gets. And even so, her profile follows the general one, instead of the ones from A Nightmare at Green Lake.
So with that whole thought out of my brain, for now I'm willing to believe that it's just one of the many little translation errors within the game.
Oh! And while I'm at it, in relation to the post you're referring to - this isn't related to the weird wording, but I said in that post that Lilya, specifically, had a very convoluted way of describing her time period that didn't match the other main characters who were alive and within the Foundation as the same time as her.
A few weeks after I posted that, me and some friends in a R1999 server started talking about that and turns out that Lilya DOES have a canon age in CN - she's 17. And in retrospect, I'm assuming that this specific change done to her Cover profile in global to obscure her age was done because of underage drinking issues, since she does drink and she gets drunk during one of the flashback boss battles - meaning she was even younger at that time.

who’s excited for stats so far?? i bet none of you are but i’m inflicting them anyway! ...under a cut.
so far, though, we have 198 separate submissions across 166 works!
so far the longest submission piece is 551 words long! wow! there are also another 3 submissions that are over 300 words long, and one piece has 797 words across 7 submissions! the shortest submission, to contrast, is 5 words long! that’s also great!
there are currently 4 artists that have had 3 pieces of art each submitted, and 8 artists that have had 2 pieces. that means there’s currently 137 other artists! oh sorry, while i was drafting this post we got a fourth submission for one of the four.
how about things anyone can go look at? there are currently 7 pieces of public art that have been submitted! four of them are from canada (and 3 are from the calgary specifically), one is in the netherlands, one is in spain, and one is in new york. the fourth canadian one also has copies in spain, japan, and arkansas. there are also 3 submitted buildings! two are in spain, and one is in thailand!
gender! we’ve got 122 pieces from male artists, and 32 pieces by female artists! yes that doesn’t add up to 166, the other 12 are either multiple artists, unknown artists, or i felt like a creeper trying to trawl through their tumblr/website and it wasn’t in their bio. sadly, we don’t have any openly trans, nb, or otherwise genderqueer artists submitted (where openly is “i could find it in the same 5 second google search to determine nationalities”)
even more niche stats! the largest submission (that isn’t a building, a cave, or public art) is 2.15 m (7 ft 1 in) x 34.14 m (112.0 ft) and weighs 4 tons! close behind it is another that's approximately 3.7m x 25.2m (12ft x 72.9ft) but weighs significantly less! i did not feel like mathing which had more square footage. the smallest submission (that is, a physical piece in real life, digital art can be insanely small) is 5.9 x 6 cm (2 5/16 x 2 3/8 in.)!
how about locations? excluding the multiple copies ones, there are 32 pieces located in the united states, 9 in spain, 8 in france, 6 in canada, 5 in england, 4 in italy, 3 each in russia, australia and mexico, 2 each in the netherlands, wales, scotland, and ireland, and 1 each in israel, finland, germany, portugal, poland, japan, austria, ecuador, thailand, latvia, singapore, belgium, and argentina! i know that doesn’t add up but there’s a lot of pieces in private collections, owned by the artist, or we just couldn’t find their location, sadly.
artist nationalities get a lot more variable! i did my best to look up every artist i could and include their birth country and the country they did their works in! except john singer sargent because he just didn’t want to settle down and i didn’t want to give him like six different countries.
starting off, we have 43 submissions by american artists! 18 by french artists, 17 by english, 8 each by canadians and italians, 6 each by russians and spaniards, 5 each by chinese, irish, and germans, 4 each by dutch, mexican and belgians, 3 by latvians, 2 each by finnish, polish, scottish, malay, serbian, and armenians, and 1 each by portuguese, japanese, austrian, ecuadorian, thai, swiss, argentine, cuban, kazhak, colombian, danish, and iranian!
i do not currently have stats for jewish artists for you, because i forgot to write it down my first time through wiki, and now i have to go through all ~140 articles and websites again. relatedly: there are 8 works by known-to-be-gay artists, but i’m already running into wikipedia going “well he sure did a lot of male nudes but he also might have had relationships with women” and i am feeling uncomfortable poking through people’s private lives so... i hope you don’t mind it i stop... counting..... i mean if they’re open about it i’ll write it down still.
how about the ages of works? there are 4 things from before the 1400s, 3 from the 1400s, 6 from the 1500s, 3 from the 1600s, and 2 from the 1700s! 5 from 1800-1850, 4 from 1850-1880, 10 from the 1880s, and 9 from the 1890s! 9 from the 1900s (that is, 1900-1909), 5 from the 1910s, 5 from the 1920s, 4 from the 1930s, 4 from the 1940s, and 6 from the 1950s! 3 from the 60s, 4 from the 70s, 7 from the 80s, 15 from the 90s, 12 from the new oughts, 17 from the 2010s, and 13 from the 2020s! and three ongoing projects!
and to wrap things up: there are 101 paintings, 12 sculptures, 17 what i’m calling installations (they’re often mixed media or unusual media, i would give examples but i feel like i would bias submissions), 6 photographs, 2 pieces of textile art, and 21 digital arts, drawings, or comics!

Staff Recruitment
Greetings! This is a post regarding staff recruitment for Concept: “Mobius”, as you probably surmised. Vertekins and I always looking to add to the ranks and make the site as detailed, informative, and cool as it can be. If you’re interested in joining, great! Let’s find you a spot! Incidentally, you may be able to fill multiple roles, but first things first. You need to run before you can Spin Attack, after all.
Concept: “Mobius” is a Sonic the Hedgehog site dedicated to information about the games within the franchise and the worlds, characters, and events within. While there are multiple wikis and whatnot that serve this purpose, we’re trying to do things differently. We want to enrich the world of the Blue Blur and hopefully make it more cohesive, less muddled, and more fun. Obviously, this is too big a job for a few people, hence the slow trickle of updates over the years.
So, we need a team to tackle this endeavor, and we have many branches for all skill sets. You'll also be asked to help out here, as well, but more on that at another time.
Writers
Arguably one of the most important roles. Writers will be contributing the bulk of the site’s content, from articles and reviews to think pieces and news blurbs. You’ll be expected to be able to spell, know your grammar, and write coherently. If the most writing you’ve done is on Twitter, you may find yourself at a loss here, especially since you’ll probably have to be your own editor, unless you ask your teammates for help (which you can, to be clear).
Artists
Another absolutely crucial role. You’ll be responsible for how the site looks: graphics, character art, zone landscapes, etc. It’ll be a big task, but you’ll always be credited for your work, with links going to whatever platform you choose.
Programmers/Modders
Your job will be to modify the games. Why? Two reasons.
We’ll be using various games for clips and showcases, and we need them to be accurate as possible. Many of them are either missing content, have various inaccuracies between one another, or just don’t look/sound/play right for our purposes. We can’t very well show Sonic’s world if it’s lackluster, can we?
We want to show what even the worst of the franchise could look/sound/play like if given the TLC they deserve.
I know this doesn’t sound necessary or worthwhile, but I assure you, it will make sense in the future.
Theorists
You’ll be helping with various theories and doing your best to plug up various plotholes in the Sonic universe. Unlike certain other game theorists, however, you’ll be expected to show restraint when speculating and not go off on tangents or grasping at whatever straws you see.
Cartographers
Your job is a doozy: making a single, DEFINITIVE map of Sonic’s Earth. You see, there have been many in the games, and they’ve been different every time, depending on the game or the area it's based in. And each one has been inconsistent. Heck, people don't even know where Green Hill Zone definitively is, despite its number of uses.
THIS.
WILL.
NOT.
DO.
If anyone is going to take Sonic lore seriously (and few people do), we need one map that can be used for every game. That way, there is more consistency in the narrative and people have a more defined view of the world.
Modelers
Your role will be to make various character renders to be used for the cast in the Character Database. You’ll be working with the artists to make the most “true to life” representations of Sonic and the others as you can. You might also find yourself recreating certain areas or scenes from the games, demonstrating various abilities, or just letting the cast style on each other.
News Reporters
You’ll be reporting on everything Sonic-related that is newsworthy, whether it be a game announcement or a funny pic from Sega. Just try not to post any memes.
That'll do for now, although, we're welcoming anyone with a notable skill set. If you think you have something to contribute to Concept: "Mobius" that is or isn't listed here, let us know. Just be aware that we can't afford to pay anyone for their work.
Thank you very much in advance!
~Ryan

Headcanons for Ember and Wade’s Steam Child
It was confirmed by writer’s of the movie Elemental, John Hoberg and Kat Likkel that they were originally going tease the idea of Ember and Wade having a steam child in the end credits and open the possiblity of a sequel. In the end, they scrapped this idea in favour of Ember and Wade leaving together on the boat for Ember’s internship and Ember’s mutual bow with her father, Bernie.
https://thedirect.com/article/elemental-sequel-exclusive
While I agree it was smart that they ended the film on where it was for the sake of Ember and Wade’s relationship developing more slowly and naturally, plus opening up more possiblities on where they could go and what adventures they could have, I still hope that their steam baby becomes canon in a sequel and/or some short films.
I have a link to some deleted storyboards by Nira Liu depicting Ember and Wade’s steam baby:
https://youtu.be/IxOSNVbYzDo?si=Ka-OjRiulvnLKkWY
There’s potential they may follow the same design and features for the child as shown in the storyboards here, but I’m hoping that the steam child won’t look too similar to an air child and hopefully adopt physical features from both their fire and water parents.
So far I’ve seen some amazing OC’s and fan-art on the potential steam child/children that Ember and Wade could have in the future. I myself have a number of headcanons about one of their potential children. I’m basing my ideas mainly off @cyndavilachase’s fan art storyboards and her OC, Misty, mainly because not only do I love the character’s design but to me the name Misty just sounds like the perfect canon name of a potential daughter of Ember and Wade.
Note: I encourage you guys to give @cyndavilachase and her artwork some love as she’s going through a hard time right now and I’m sure she’d appreciate your support.
Misty’s name and how she gets it:
Considering both Wade and Ember have elemental names linked to their own personal element, it makes sense that their child also has a name that links to their element...but...that doesn’t mean we can’t get creative with how their daughter gets her name.
I imagine the first time Wade sees his daughter he weeps over how “perfectly beautiful” she is. Ember herself admits holding their beautiful daughter in her arms is making her “all misty”. Inspired by her own words and by their daughter’s misty complexion, Ember suggests that they name their daughter Misty, which Wade whole-heartedly agrees is perfect.
Misty’s design:
I’ve added links to @cyndavilachase’s design of Misty for reference. I give her all the credit for the drawing and design.
https://www.tumblr.com/cyndavilachase/721079532719931392/misty-wade-and-embers-daughter-steam?source=share
I’ve seen designs of steam children, even one from Peter Sohn himself (of which I can’t remember where I saw it) that look more like air elements in the shape of poofy clouds. While these designs are cute, I actually prefer that a steam child doesn’t look exactly like an air child (though steam may be mistaken for “wispy air” at times, much to the offense of Misty and her parents) but instead their head and body moves in an upwards motion like fire does. Like real steam she’s also light grey in colour.
Misty’s elemental functions:
My thoughts about how Misty’s elemental functions is based off what I’ve researched online, but I’ve also added a little creative input to her elemantal functions as well.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geyser
Being that Misty is part water like her dad, I imagine her body leaves “steam marks” in the shape of tiny water droplets like you’d see on mirrors after you have a hot shower. Misty herself enjoys making “steam drawings” on mirrors and some of her mum’s thrown out prototype glass figurines. She can also use her body to clean dirty surfaces, such the chimney at The Fireplace.
Being part fire like her mum, Misty’s body is most comfortable when she’s at a hot or at least a warm temperature. If she gets too cold she starts to thin out or may even be at risk of evaporating completely. Therefore in winter weather her parents are extremely careful to make sure she’s rugged up for going outdoors and they also make sure she drinks plenty of hot liquids or maybe a hot steam drink they make themselves just in case she starts to fade away.
Because she copes so well in heat, Misty has a higher tolerance to hot food than Wade does. She can blow out smoke rings as result, but unfortunately cannot produce a flame herself.
Like the air elements, Misty has the ability to float and leviate in the air, but is more limited on how high she can get as her body will start to evaporate if she gets too high and perhaps her breathing becomes more shallow much like someone with asthma (which causes her some problems when she tries to join the Junior Air Ball team). Perhaps she uses her steam breath to lift herself into the air. Though limited in how high she can float, Misty takes pleasure in this ablity as it’s so unique from her parents abilities. She’s not afraid to test it out and see where limitations are.
One of Misty’s most powerful and at times most dangerous functions is her ability to turn her whole body into a hot geyser. While this function often explodes instinctively when she loses her temper, with time she learns control this ability and use it in a controlled manner. I imagine if they do make sequel, it would be amazing for her to use her ability in a herioc manner, after making this hero’s speech about her loving and accepting herself in all she is
“Who am I? I am Misty Lumen-Ripple. Daughter of Ember and Wade, a fire person and a water person. I am fire AND water, but I am so much more than that. I’m a daughter, a granddaughter, a niece, a cousin, a friend...and even a great-graddaughter. I’m an element all to myself. I’m me! I...AM...STEAM!”
Personality:
I personally see Misty taking after both her parents in her personality traits. Like her dad, Wade, I imagine she’s energetic, extroverted, enthusiatic and very fun-loving and in touch with her goofy side. Like her mum, Ember, she’s very passionate, driven, creative and at times hot-tempered. Like both of them she’s adventurous and can be very competitive. I imagine she’s a total tomboy.
Like the element steam itself, I would describe Misty’s temperament as temperamental. One moment she can be calm and joyful, the next moment she’ll either exploding into a geyser of steam or getting weepy in a puddle of tears (she becomes more wet and weepy when she’s sad).
She’s incredibly compassionate and is not afraid to stick up for those she loves, though it’s sometimes a struggle to stand up for herself at times. She can be stubborn on things she cares about most and once she sets her mind on something it’s hard to change her mind.
From what I’ve seen of @cyndavilachase’s storyboards, I get the feeling that her version of Misty may be quite an athlete. Perhaps she takes an interest in air ball after going to a few games with her parents and perhaps even her “Aunt” Gale and “Uncle” Fern (she has their permission to call them that). She develops a huge passion for the sport after playing a few games with Gale and realising that she has a natural talent for it. As I mentioned before I imagine she’s very competitive and even headstrong when it comes to winning the game itself. Let’s just say she definitely proves herself to be her mother’s daughter and Gale’s protégé when she’s playing the game she loves. :D
In terms of similarities to other Pixar children and their storylines, I could see her being adventurous and gutsy despite her physical limitations like Nemo from Finding Nemo and much like Riley from Inside Out I can see a playful and goofy child struggling with a lot of angst and emotional baggage and finding it hard to open up about it to her parents as well as herself. Plus Misty’s athleticisim and competive drive may mirror Riley’s.
I also imagine she has a lot of similarities to a young Judy Hopps' in her fearless determination, her high energy and her desire to acheive a seemingly impossible dream to become the first steam person on an air ball team and perhaps someday becoming an air ball (or in her words steam ball) champion, much like Judy’s unyielding desire to make it as the first bunny police officer. Like Judy, I definitely see Misty being a victim of bullying and prejudice due to being part fire/part water, though with encouragement and unconditional love from her parents it gives her the strength to keep going, even if she sometimes feels insecure and believes herself to be a “freak”. With time and growth, she learns to love and accept herself for who she is and to block out the hurtful, cruel things others say about her.
https://youtu.be/rNCDpTd_j3Y?si=8Tcx6gEIzBCDixR7
Relationship with her parents:
Misty has a very loving, playful and affectionate relationship with her dad, Wade, who is her rock, best friend and is the one she can turn to for a listening ear. Wade loves his baby girl (his nickname for her) with all his heart and will do all he can to let her know that he’s there for her when she needs him. He won’t hesitate to cry with her and hug her when she’s upset or scared. Misty herself adores her dad and always looks to him for support or even a game of wave ball. I imagine Wade as a stay-at-home dad as he wants to prioritise spending time with his family and doesn’t mind doing most of the household chores like cleaning dishes and anything that involves water (Ember will help out with all the other chores that don’t involve water).
I imagine that Misty’s relationship with her mother, Ember being a loving but at times a little tense as I imagine the mother and daughter clash a lot due their similar hot-tempers and stubborn personalities. The two often get into fights, but with Wade acting as the cool-headed third party, both girls do make up after their spats and do their best to talk things out.
For awhile though, I imagine they possibly go through a rough period where Ember struggles with trying to support and understand Misty in her internal struggles and even starts to question her own abilities as a mother. With Wade’s support and encouragement though she finds ways of learning to better communicate and understand her little girl.
One of the areas where Ember and Misty do bond is over their shared love of creative hobbies. One of Misty’s favourites (especially when she’s little) is doing steam drawings on glass. Misty enjoys watching her mother work in her workshop. As a career mum, Ember sometimes struggles with balancing the stress of a successful career with being there for her family. Overall though, Ember always puts her family as her first priority and tries her best to make her talent of glassmaking as fun as possible so she can bond with her daughter
Ember is definitely a mama bear when it comes to her little girl. If anyone bullies or discriminates against Misty for being half-fire and/or half-water she won’t hesitate to flare up and protect her daughter. She wants Misty to be proud of her maternal fire culture and teaches her about fire traditions like the importance of the Blue Flame to fire people and it’s involvement in traditional ceremonies, but she also struggles with the fact that Misty is limited in her fire ablities due to her being made of steam and therefore it’s a physical struggle for her to be a part of the same fire traditions that she herself was involved with as a child. It takes some growth and flexiblity on her part for her to help and support her daughter in her physical struggles while also helping her to embrace her fire culture despite the dismissal and prejudiced views of some old-fashioned fire people who don’t believe a “half-fire/half water” child (or as they cruelly call her watered down fire) should be allowed to participate in fire people traditions. With help from Wade, Ember does learn to find ways to allow Misty to be involved with fire ceremonies. In times she learns how to balance out her love and respect for her fire culture, all while supporting and loving her child for her own uniqueness.
Ember teaches both Misty and Wade (who wants to learn for both his wife's sake and for the sake of communicating with those non-English speakers in the Fire community) how to speak Firish. Wade's Firish is still rusty due his watery tongue, but he's eager to learn and a good listener. 😊 While not quite as fluent in Firish as her mum, Misty is a bit quicker at picking up Firish than her dad. She can hold a conversation fairly well, but may need assistance from her mum and maternal grandparents at times.
Misty calls her father “dad” or “daddy” (though the latter more when she’s younger) and her mother “mum”, “mummy” (when she’s little) and at times her Firish name Ashka.
Relationship with the rest of her family and family friends:
Brook absolutely adores her steam grandchild and always tries her best to make her feel loved, welcome and accepted into her home whenever she visits or she has time to babysit her. At her son and daughter-in-law’s request, she makes sure to adjust the temperature of the living room pool to a warm (but not boiling hot for the sake of the rest of water members of the family) temprature so she can comfortably swim with her two cousins (though being made of steam means that bits of her body float along the surface and bubble up the rest of the pool). Misty makes fun out of this by pretending to be a steam monster to scare her cousins. Though they do tease her and get on her nerves at times, they nonetheless love each other and the boys will often act as protective older brothers to her against bullies and anyone who discriminates against her.
Alan and Eddy often take her on outings with their boys, Marco and Paolo, which are enjoyable for Misty...until people mistake her for Marco and Paolo’s “wispy little cloud friend” rather than their cousin and their parents niece. This leads to awkward moments for the pair, but they always correct others for their mistake and try their best to reassure her that she’s always a part of their family no matter what.
While she doesn’t spend much time with Lake (I’m not sure if she calls her Aunty Lake, just Lake or something else perhaps) and Ghibli due to their commitments to their studies, she has gone to a few of their college art exhabitions and admires their artistic talents.
Cinder is extremely excited when she finds out she’s going to be a grandmother and isn’t hesitant to offer her daughter and son-in-law whatever advice and help they need in order to prepare for the birth of their daughter Misty. Once Misty is born she dotes on her completely and at times spoils her. She and Bernie enjoy babysitting for Misty when Ember and Wade are busy or perhaps going out for a date night (she’s very encouraging that her daughter and son-in-law keep their romantic spark alive).
When Bernie finds out that Ember is pregnant with Misty, he feels torn in his feelings about it. Part of him is happy for his daughter and proud of the fact he’s going to be a grandfather, but the other half is hesitant about having a “half-water” grandchild, mostly because he’s not sure if the child can properly connect to fire due to them being made up of two different elements. It’s only when he meets his granddaughter for the first time that he immediately falls in love with her. The moment he sees Misty sneeze is moment he realises that she is “her Ashka’s daughter”.
He and Ember herself share the beauty of their fire culture with the young girl and she (and even her water father) can’t help but be enthralled by the beauty of fire and the fire culture itself. While Bernie wants Misty to take pride in being part fire, he is also wary of Misty’s limits around fire due to being unable to produce a flame. He is also wary of the prejudice that a number of fire people have against the child for being part water. Though he’s proud of his culture and being a fire person, his love for his granddaughter is far stronger and he won’t hesistate to turn himself into a raging inferno if anyone discriminates against her (e.g. calls her hurtful names like “watered down fire” or they prevent her from being involved in fire ceremonies, etc).
Misty’s name for Brook is either “Grandma” or “Nana”, while Cinder and Bernie she refers to them by their Firish names for Grandma and Grandfather/Grandpa.
I imagine that Misty has a strong bond with her “Aunty Gale” She considers the air woman, her dad’s (possibly former) boss and family friend to be like an aunt to her, and Gale herself adores the “little steam ball” (an affectionate nickname that only Gale is allowed to call her). Both girls are huge Wind Breaker fans and air ball enthusiasts. In fact, it was all through playing airball with Gale that Misty realised she had a natural talent for it. Gale encourages the young steam child to try out for the Junior Air Ball Team, and doesn’t believe the girl should let the fact that she’s not technically an air element stop her from playing the game she loves. Gale is so supportive of Misty and her talent she’s even willing to coach a junior air ball team herself, in which she’ll include steam players (though Misty is currently the only known steam element in Element City) as well as air players. Gale is willing to make technical adjustments to the court so Misty doesn’t lose too much steam (no pun intended) and play along fairly with the rest of the air players.
Misty’s relationship with her “Uncle Fern” is a bit tentative as Fern’s slow-talking and rather sarcastic personality tends to weird Misty out a bit. Overall though they are on relatively friendly terms and they share their bond along with Gale over their love of the Wind Breakers.
She gets along well with Flarry and Flarrieta, her grandfather’s protégé’s and the current owners of The Fireplace. She enjoys joking around with them and always tries her best to outwit them with a few playful puns and innocent jokes.  She also enjoys helping them out with chores in the store, her personal favourite being the cleaning chimney as she can test out her physical abilities in cleaning, levitating and squeezing through tight spaces. Though her parents aren’t too impressed when she gets her clothes dirty, but luckily they aren’t that hard for her to clean herself with her steam breath. Flarry and Flarrieta believe she could possibly open successful cleaning business someday, but Misty is more interested in persuing her dream to be an air ball/steam ball champion.
I could see her looking up to Clod and his little fire girlfriend as older sibling mentors. Maybe when they're a bit older they babysit Misty (and perhaps some future siblings) from time to time. Though I imagine Ember feeling very nervous at this prospect at first, worrying that Clod and his girlfriend aren't old enough or mature enough to babysit the young steam child. It takes a bit of convincing from Wade for Ember to give Clod and his girlfriend a chance. Hopefully they prove themselves responsible.
Her storyline in a potential sequel:
I would like to go into more detail about possible sequel storylines in another post, but overall I’ll go into minor details about what Misty’s role would be in the story.
I imagine Misty’s storyline will be mostly about finding her own identity and value for herself as a whole person. For most of the movie she struggles with this, seeing herself as “not fire enough” to fit into her mother’s culture and to be part of their fire traditions (due to she can’t produce a flame) and she also isn’t “water enough” to fit in with the rest of her father’s family as she not only looks different to them but she also can’t completely immerse herself in water. She spends most of the movie focusing on what she’s not rather than what she is. Only with emotional growth and self-discovery does learn to embrace all sides of herself in her culture and parentage while she also learns to value herself as her own person and elment to herself.
I could also see Misty struggling in her relationship with her parents, particularly her relationship with her mother. Perhaps she may come to have resentments of her parents as she feels she doesn’t belong in either side of the family and even feels like outsider due to how different she looks and functions as an element. I imagine both her parents (especially Ember) struggle themselves with trying to be there and support their child, but ultimately they realise the only thing they can truly do right is to love and support their daughter for exactly who she is. It’s only with her parents unconditional love and their support does Misty have the wisdom and guidance to grow as a person and comes to love and accept herself for all she is and more.
I hope you like my theories so far. Be sure to see more from me once they’re finished.
