You had your chance

Angst, Fluff. Eddie fluff, Steve angst 🤭

You were with Steve for a long time, long enough for the two of you to want to start planning a wedding, long enough for Steve to begin suggesting baby names. You two were definitely together long enough for you to be completely devastated when you walked into the shared apartment to see him in bed with the co-worker he always told you not to worry about.

That night…oh that night will always be Steve’s biggest regret in his life.

Every day since that night you have been a wreck. Steve has been trying to see you and trying to call you but you never answer, you do, however, listen to the voicemails he leaves. “Baby it was a mistake….She means nothing to me at all! You are my future, You are the woman I want to become the mother of my children. Baby please I need you so bad, I can’t live without you…I don’t know what to do without you in my life…” After three weeks of these voicemails being left every day, multiple times a day, you finally disconnect your voicemail.

Steve panics when he calls and your voicemail doesn’t turn on. He is pacing around work as he is ranting his thoughts to Robin, “What if something happened? What if she is hurt? What if she isn’t even home anymore and she’s stranded somewhere?” Robin scoffs, “Something DID happen, you happened dingus” She rolls her eyes, “Just leave her alone Harrington, it’s been a month you both need to move on.” Move on?? How could Steve ever live without you?

You were slowly starting to get back on your feet, you started to work a full week again at the little grocery store in town. The regular older ladies were excited to see you at check out again and they made sure to fill you in on everything that happened while you were away. “You missed it! Miss Sally in produce knocked over ALL the oranges last week” “No, no that's no news! She needs to know about Miss Brenda and how she LOST that million-dollar rock that was on her hand”. All you could do was laugh at the ladies' antics and scan them out each Wednesday. If you were being honest work was the distraction you needed and once the first paid check came in you were back to being like how you were before Steve ever came into your life. That is before a new boy walked into your life but this time it was like a breath of fresh air.

Eddie met you when he went to your job to pick up things Wayne had asked for and you were the only one checking people out still, from the first time his eyes fell on you, he knew he would fall in love with you. And he did. It took a little over six trips for him to work up the courage to ask you out, every time he would go to the store he would spend ten minutes sitting in the van giving himself a pep talk but as soon as he was in that line he felt himself melt and he lost all his words. But on the seventh trip there he finally asked you out, and to his surprise (and his relief) you smiled and giggled saying “That took you long enough” and that following Saturday you two went for pizza and you’ve been inseparable ever since.

It’s been about six months since the first date and Eddie was everything you ever needed. He was kind and sweet, he knew exactly how to make you feel better and exactly when you needed some self-care or alone time. He was….well he was just perfect. Eddie knew that Steve broke your heart and it took everything in him to not kick Harrington's ass every time he saw him. Since you were so heartbroken after Steve, Eddie and you decided it would be good to take things slow, and just from how well and understanding Eddie was to that, you knew he was your true love, your real future. Eddie didn’t mind taking your relationship slow, he knew he was going to have all the time in the world to love and worship you so he was in no rush, but even with taking things slow you have never felt so loved, so cherished than you do with Eddie.

On your six-month anniversary, Eddie wanted to surprise you with something nice, something expensive, but that month at work was so slow and by the time the day rolled around he was heartbroken to notice he hardly had any money to buy you something you deserved. It’s times like this where Eddie was nervous you would realize you deserved more, you deserved someone like Harrington, someone you knew could shower you with gifts and the finest jewels. That’s when you showed up and reminded him he had no reason to think like that, you loved him for all that he is and you didn’t need any fancy thing to feel the love he has for you. You feel that love every time your eyes meet his and that's all you need. Eddie decided right then to give you something, “It’s not much, but it’s something I want you to have. I know we haven’t been together for too long but I want you to have something with you all the time even if I’m not there” Eddie made your eyes fill with tears when he slipped off one of his rings and slipped it onto your finger. “This is to show that you have me now and you’ll have me forever.” Since that day you never took the ring off.

Thanks to being with Eddie you haven’t seen Steve since you left the apartment, however, tonight is Dustin’s birthday and Steve is throwing a party for him. Eddie made sure you were comfortable with going tonight and you knew you had to go, Dustin was and still is like your brother, so even though you never wanted to see Steve again you decided to go.

Steve was busy making the punch when you and Eddie walked in. Eddie planned on sticking to your side the entire night but other people had different plans. As soon as you stepped foot into the room the girls swept you away, and the same happened with Eddie but with Hellfire instead. Once the two of you were in your little groups the questions come flying. Nancy notices immediately that you’re wearing one of Eddies rings, “Oh my god did he propose!?” She gushes as she grabs your hand, “No proposing yet” you giggle “It’s more of a promise ring.” The girl's awe but Max chuckles “I never thought Hawkins “freak” would do promise rings…But let me see” She says pushing Robin to the side to get a better look at your hand. In Eddie’s group the guys immediately take notice that their dungeon master is missing one of his rings. “Dude! What happened to Jimmy?? (You cannot tell me that Eddie doesn’t name his rings) Eddie laughs and looks down at his newly naked finger “Oh well Jimmy has a new home” He says looking over at you. “No way!” “Man that’s great” “Did you propose?” Too many voices at once speak up, Eddie chuckles and calmly answers the question “No proposing yet but I can guarantee that will be happening soon”

Steve walks into the living room where everyone is gathered and smiles seeing you for the first time in months, you look amazing while he..god he’s a mess still. He walks over to the group of guys to tell Dustin the pizza just got ordered when he overhears Eddie talking about proposing soon. “Proposing? Who is going to be Mrs. Munson” Steve asks chuckling, Steve’s laughter stops shortly after it stops when he sees Dustin and Eddie stiffen up slightly, “Dustin…Dude you okay” Steve asks but before Dustin can answer you walk over to give Dustin a hug. “There’s the birthday boy! The girls stole me before I could even say hi to you” Your hands wrap around Dustin’s back and that's when Steve sees it. He makes eye contact with Eddie and clenches his jaw, that should be his diamond ring on your finger, not some thrift store costume jewelry. You pull away from Dustin when the energy in the room feels off to you, you step back and see the fury behind Steve’s eyes.

“Steve?” you ask quietly, “How…How could you!?” He nearly shouts, “I was going to give you everything and you move on so quickly, and to-- to that thing!? I made one mistake and you’re throwing it all away!” He says with disgust, “You moved on so fast are you sure you weren’t the one cheating? Like he could ever make you feel like I could” Steve scoffs and just before he goes to speak some more Eddie walks up and shoves him into the kitchen “Listen man you will not be shouting at her like that. You’ve done enough damage as is” Steve tries to fight against Eddie yelling at him to take his hands off of him, soon after Eddie is pushing Steve into the kitchen the door behind them close and all you can hear is Steve yelling at Eddie more. Tears start to fill your eyes as Max pulls you into her.

“How could you? I thought we were friends Munson you knew I loved her.-” Eddie cuts Steve off right there, “Yeah you loved her. You don’t love her anymore, if you did you would’ve never slept with the blonde chick. I love her. I will always love her, you had your chance and you blew it, I now have mine and I will never lose her.” Eddie storms out of the kitchen and goes over to you, “You okay baby?” He asks and all you can do is nod while clinging to him. “Let’s get going” Eddie whispers to you and once you nod he announces that you two would be leaving and that if anyone wanted to come over to the trailer they could.

That night ended the same way the night he cheated ended. It ends with Steve being all alone once more.
