vague DP x Noragami crossover time~
Hiyori is terrified of Danny; something about him rubs her so so wrong. She tries her best to be nice, but she is the equivalent of a shivering chihuahua puppy in his midst. Danny feels kinda bad about that, but he can't really turn it off without turning human so he tries to stay as calm as possible around her.
Yukine, on the other hand, loves him. He thinks Danny's so cool and keeps bugging him about stuff from America and trying to show off how much he knows about the culture (a very impressive amount actually), and goes nuts seeing all the things Danny can do with his ghost powers. Danny feels the same about Yukine, gushing about his Shinki abilities and urging him into telling stories about his adventures and Japanese culture. These two become good friends.
Yato is kind of indifferent, and then the tiniest bit jealous once Yukine starts looking up to Danny. After getting to know him a little more, Danny has a hard time believing someone like Yato is a real "god".
It doesn't take long for Yukine to start looking up to Danny, just seeing how easily Danny can take care of Ayakashi (named "Phantoms" in the anime, heh) impressed Yukine enough to ask for advice. Thus, Yato's "oh hey potentially a customer!" doesn't last more than a day or two.
Danny does accidentally hang out with Hiyori in human form, and she does not recognize him in the slightest. She also isn't afraid of him at all in human form.
Important note: Danny, to this trio, only know him as "Phantom"
Side idea: I,,, am gonna be honest, I dunno how the naming system would work realistically, but somehow with some word, Yato gets cut off from saying the whole word of something and Danny gets a funny feeling in his chest! By the time he feels two hands holding him tightly, he realizes that he is A) not in ghost form, B) not in human form, and C) he was-
"A Thermos?" Yato asked. "Bit of a random item, but- HOLD ON YOU'RE A SHINKI?!"
Danny did not, in fact, know he was a Shinki.
The idea is: Yato, being a "god of calamity" (if this isnt actually true, F to me), and Danny, being... whatever the hell amalgamation of ecto-energy and ghost shit and human being that he is- they both sort of? overlap? If that makes sense. And so, even though Yato did not intend to call a Shinki, nor did he know Danny was a Shinki (and that he had apparently bestowed a name at some point and completely forgotten about except- that's impossible what the fuck) he had none the less a new Shinki in his possession. One that turned into a thermos.
Idk how this would go plotwise, but Yato would immediately turn around and go "hey, Yukine, isn't this great? We can use Danny to keep food warm in the winter-!" and then he gets wrestled to the ground by Hiyori of all people, who was previously keeping a good distance between her and Danny and also panicking a little bit because it seemed like his smell completely disappeared what-
And Danny is just "what the fuck what the fuck what the fuck" and "did my parents sell me to the calamity god at some point???"
The answer he gets is no, but he's never totally sure and is always suspicious about it.
Some more notes:
-> He freaks out Hiyori because he smells like an Ayakashi
-> Yukine is a little bit drawn to him due to their similar (enough) circumstances.
-> Yato doesn't give much of a shit beyond the usual, at first, because he's used to the presence of death and Ayakashi near him. And Danny's existence isn't much of a surprise to him after hanging out with a sort-of Ayakashi (Hiyori) for so long.
-> After transforming into a Shinki for Yato, Danny can, in fact, blight him! When he changes back to his non-thermos self though, he does not blight Yato.
-> Danny offers to teach Yukine math one (1) time when Hiyori is unavailable and it ends with both of them getting repeat lessons. Danny thinks its a rip-off that he's not in school and yet he's still doing homework.
#dp crossover#DPxNoragami#danny phantom#noragami#nemotime#might add to this later when i'm further along in my rewatch of the anime and remember more stuff#tho i definitely remember that Rabo guy and it would be quite fun to consider him fucking shit up for Yato AND Danny#i wanna make Danny and Hiyori decent friends when he's in human form but i find it so funny making her just hiss at him out of fear#and then going 'omg im sooo sorry. i dont know what came over me- *HISS*' but like. she is completely 100% geniune#poor girl. it is very amusing to me however#possible reasons for Danny not in school - vacation. graduated. errand for Clockwork. etc. idk yet)#will probably make it so that Hiyori eventually gets used to having him around and then she's the one to make the connection#about his human form. but for now. crying screaming hissing on the floor etc#YOOO#HOW FUCKED UP WOULD IT BE IF CLOCKWORK WAS ONE OF THE BIG TIME 'gods' AND HE JUST MADE DANNY HIS SHINKI#WITHOUT TELLING HIM????#ohhhh#this fucks me up oh man#CW seeing no problem with it & Danny not getting the problem until its pointed out to him#that he can't remember a single time before this when he was used / turned into a thermos#because when you make a spirit a Shinki and give them a name#they transform. so Danny should be able to remember transforming *at least* once before now. and yet.#i mean its not that hard to figure out right? Master ('god') of all time. Likely to be very volatile Shinki. Just rewind and you're good :)#and maybe CW does rewind. when Danny starts blighting him kinda hard. and Danny doesn't notice much out of place#he just thinks he got knocked out during a fight and asked what he missed#later. Hiyori and Yukine will try to jog his memory and Yato will be doing ... something sus probably in the background to try to help#oh man i also gotta figure out Danny and Yato's whole deal with the accidental Shinki + blighting mess between them#anywho bed time for meee

Noragami reread: Volume 25, 26 & 27 thoughts
The last of the reread thoughts. Until the next reread (I'll still use the same tag!), and see you with the release of the final chapter shortly. Until then, I'll be mostly off the grid.
Volume 25 is...absolutely brutal. It starts right off with Yuka clearly seeing Hiyori as similar to her mother (aka someone who smiled her way through problems), then we get a flashback of Yukine's father finding the letters and ripping them up in front of him. The most chilling part is that he said he knew all along what was in them, but Yukine isn't even listening. And then there's the page of sound effects followed by an unsettling silence. I just. ANOTHER TOP 10 MOST GUTTING MOMENTS OF NORAGAMI. (Maybe I will actually compile a list.)
Nora goes back to trash dad because even though she's figured out he's full of shit, she still craves the love of a parent--she wasn't ever alive long enough to have it, so that yearning will never go away. So when he calls for her with a fake apology, she's never heard that from him before and believes him, and gets swept up in the moment of working as they used to. But the illusion is broken, and that's why she eventually turns on him.
Yato's struggle to get Yukine back contrasts beautifully with trash dad's backstory--a story about how the world is mean, and cruel, and you have to fight to survive because everyone's just in it for themselves. Trash dad is projecting his anger onto Yukine because he never had a father figure to look up to, but Yukine does now--Yato.
Yukine realizes this in what is still probably the most beautiful scene in the manga (although him asking Yato about him being buried is tied). I cried so many tears over this, and I will continue to do so.
Trash dad in Yomi with Izanami is a super interesting scene because of how casual she is with him. She sits with him a while, seemingly never pressures him to dine with her, and willingly tells him all about shinki and ayakashi while asking him about his own past. At the end of this, he steals the brush from her and escapes. When we see Izanami in the current story where Yato and Ebisu encounter her, she's desperate for a friend and keeps pushing food on them. So my guess is that back then, she was a lot more hospitable (or maybe just because she knew humans aren't allowed to leave Yomi), but him stealing from her and escaping caused her to become even more lonely and distrustful.
Likewise, what Father says about the brush naming shinki is very interesting too. The law of Yomi supercedes the law of heaven as far as spirits are concerned, because she was the first person to try naming ayakashi. Since Hagusa and Mizuchi were both named as corrupted spirits, the names bestowed by the brush can't be removed by Amaterasu. Could Izanami remove them? Probably.
That makes me wonder if, in the final chapter, because the brush is destroyed they will lose those names. It doesn't really matter, though, because (a) Yukine already made the choice to become a stray. That won't change. Same with Mizuchi, even if she'd personally gone around and begged every god to release her. But (b) both of them were pushed into this choice by a master manipulator, one who is dead and won't be able to control them anymore. And (c) Yukine, at least, has found his forever master. Mizuchi is...a little lost in that regard, but I'm hoping the fan theory that Kofuku names her comes true.
Not a lot from volumes 26 and 27, but I didn't notice before that trash dad separated himself from Fujisaki so he woke up, but how did his lifeline to Father get cut? I assume they'll explain it in the last chapter--maybe Yato stopped by? He's unable to talk super well (probably because he's feeling some of the effects of decapitation) but he would still remember the name...but that also fades as he talks to the police.
Side note, I love that his birth date is omitted in his student ID. The month and date, not just the year. Adachitoka said NO celebrating Fujisaki's birthday for you.
Now that I'm not distressed and angry about the Hiyori shinki thing (because I know it was reversed), I want to comment that I wish she had said, like, a single word while she was a shinki. Wondering where she is, or who that girl's body is, or something. I do just wish this whole business hadn't happened in the first place, but it is what it is. Since it was undone, it's not a dealbreaker.
As for my other ending hangups--I think Yukine's father won't have his fate mentioned, or maybe just a quick mention that he's dead. There's a point in Yukine's Hagusa arc where he decides his father isn't worth his time, basically, and the official translation talks about forgiveness. But it's not really forgiveness, it's just accepting that getting revenge won't do anything now.
Still kind of wish Hiyori and Bishamon had had more to do in the final arc, still think it's a bit funny that the gods started slaughtering humans only for them to go back to normal like 10 minutes later, don't really care that much though. As long as the trio stays alive and trash dad stays dead, I'll take it.

Let's talk about Chapter 107- Part Deux (Ex Machina)
Man. Man.
Follow up post from this. Might as well keep this as a series because I guess verbal diarrhoea is a coping mechanism for me. Thoughts and predictions again. Spoilers below
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So it appears that yes, Hiyori is 100% dead now since we saw her memories through Yato (broke my fucking heart btw) and we're going down the shinki route.
Yato didn't want to name her. He had no choice. He had just watched the love of his life be murdered right in front of him and was about to see her be transformed into his Father's monstrous puppet. Naming her there and then before Father got the chance to was the only way to save her. This is the most brutal fucking chapter in the entire series I swear to GOD. (Though I think most of us can agree that from the small glimpse of Hakki we have so far, she looks gorgeous. That sakura design.. 🥺)
But seriously I'm hoping and praying that Hiyori is somehow going to retain her memories and either bypass the GGS or be pretty much immune to it. Like I said before, she's a special case. Because she already had ties to the Far Shore and to multiple gods, she might get a sort of get out of jail free card here. Plus it would just interrupt the flow of the finale to a really weird extent if she lost all of her memories. It'd be too jarring and weird imo. Perhaps she initially has all of them but then over time her Near Shore memories will eventually fade away.
(Reiterating what I said in the previous post. I have no idea how this is going to affect other shinkis with her being around in regards to the GGS. Or even if her existence will be allowed by Amaterasu. It's not like Ammy can wipe everyone's memories of Hiyori to safeguard them. But hey)
Also the fact that his shinkis are literally Snow White? Lol.
Lets say she retains her memories. Will she still be called Hiyori or will she have to go by Shirone even if hearing her name won't break her? Maybe it'll be a closely guarded secret by her and Yato. Having her name on a part of her body that can't be seen (like over her heart for instance because thematics) means it's hidden from view from anyone else, therefore nobody can use that name against her (KAZUMA. 👀) An extra layer of protection for her. It'll be her and Yato's (and probably Yukine's too) secret.
Speaking of Yukine, I'm guessing he's going to be out of action for this final final fight. With Hiyori slicing the Koto No Ha in half like an absolute boss ass bitch, it's likely that The Nation will collapse and everyone will return to their regular forms. Yukine will probably be in a bad shape and unfit to fight let alone even transform into Sekki. Meaning it's going to be Yato and Hiyori Vs Father working together as one. The Deux Ex Machina has appeared and she is pissed.
Tumblr media
(Literally though, first thing she does as a weapon is take a slice at Father and the brush. I didn't even realise she'd cut his fingers til the second read through. Looks like she might have even got his neck too? Dare I say...? Slay?)
So yeah. I'm hoping that because of her original ties to Yato and the Far Shore, her memories may not be lost. The two of them will team up to take down Father as possibly the most powerful shinki we've seen so far. Nobody has been able to make a dent in the Koto No Ha until now. Which is possibly why this is why the story is going this way. Yato has tried and failed to take down Father multiple times. He couldn't use Yukine for his final confrontation for obvious reasons so he went on a search to find a suitable and powerful enough shinki to take his place, and that ended up being Kazuma. Obviously didn't work out as intended though.
Funny how maybe the person he's needed to take down Father all along is Hiyori. Father might have ended up winning in the end but by killing her, he's essentially doomed himself.

Basic Information: Full name: Zee Hiyori
Age: 22 Gender: Male (He/Him) Occupation: Biomedical engineer Height: 5'6 (168 cm) Sexuality: Bisexual, male leaning Birthdate: February 4th (tehe also my birthday)
How to bully him:
Compare him to Sou. Initially he will be pissed but he will eventually break down. Or, you could go the opposite direction. Blame his death on him. Both will make him break down
Talk about his life as an assassin. He is absolutely not proud of it, he hates everything he did.
He has big imposter syndrome. Use that as you will.
He is scared of death, loss of safety (for himself or those he cares about), and being watched. He also has a mild fear of crowded/cramped spaces and water
He is especially vulnerable while drunk and probably will cry after just a few insults
Threaten anyone close to him, ESPECIALLY Shin. If you show any proof you could hurt them, he will get angry but will basically do whatever you ask to protect them
Appearance: Hair: Dyed black, naturally green. He has a natural white stripe near the front center that he refuses to dye, obtained from a near death experience. The length is a little above his shoulders and is fluffy. Eye color: Green Skin tone: Pale with freckles all over his body Clothing: Black button up and black slacks, boots with a bit of a platform, and a purple scarf that is clearly well-worn. His closet is mostly dark greys and blacks and is usually more punk/alternative, both masc and fem. He also has a closet with formal dresses, most being black and blue. 90% of the time he is masc presenting but will occasionally dress fem, usually in private. Etc: Missing his left eye, left arm, and right leg (he usually wears realistic looking prosthetics), has a scar over his left eye.
Personality: Zee is pretty quiet and can often appear to be cold with a resting bitch face, especially around new people and those he isn't close to. But once he warms up to someone he is decently kind, and to those he's closest to he's a bit of an asshole (affectionately). He's pretty good at reading people, but sometimes he can struggle with lying if he doesn't have a plan in place because he tends to panic. He hates talking about his feelings, but he does worry for his friends and will be the most annoying person if they are not taking care of themselves. But he will rarely admit it, or will brush it off so it doesn't get talked about.
He does enjoy teasing and messing with people, but he usually reserves it for those he's closest to and will usually back off if asked. Despite that, it is easy to tease him back and he is very easily flustered. He is quite the alcoholic, especially drinking more when life is stressful. While normally having decent to good coordination, that all goes out the window when he is even slightly tipsy. He also tends to tease more when drunk to the point of just being flat out annoying. He is even worse of a liar when drunk and is actually very honest, often giving too much information after having a few drinks. Even if he tries to lie, it will be clear even to the most unobservant person.
He is bad at controlling his emotions, especially anger, and is quite unstable. He often acts without thinking, especially when it comes to anger or panic. He is known to try and run away when faced with difficult situations and tends to go into denial. If something bad happens in his life do not leave him alone.
History: Zee is the younger brother of Sou, and often looked up to him. As a kid he would try and follow in his footsteps, not quite understanding how bad of a person he was. When he was around 13-14, he was recruited by Asu-Naro to be an assassin. He was quite good at his job, he would crossdress as female and lure targets away. When he was in his late teens he realized that Sou wasn't the best person, so the day he turned 18 he moved out and cut contact, dying his hair to try and look different. He hid his last name, often dodging the subject or lying until eventually Sou told his friends the truth. A few years into being an adult, he started taking college classes in his free time. He knew he couldn't escape Asu-Naro, so he decided to get an education in order to work his way up the company into a more safe and comfortable position. He currently is a higher ranking employee at the company. For awhile, Zee was recruited into Veritas Aurora. One day, Shin killed Sou in a fit of rage. Zee did not take this well at all. He would never admit it and played a front that he hated Sou, but he still did care for him as an older brother. Zee basically shut down and after learning Shin was responsible he attempted to poison Shin with medicine Synapse requested to help Shin with hallucinations. Thankfully, the poison pills did not kill him, but Synapse was pissed and Zee ended up leaving Veritas Aurora.
Still not doing stable, Zee cut his own arm off. Shin ended up helping him after discovering what Zee did (even after Zee threatened to kill him and stab his eye out) and soon recovered. When Mars 'died', Zee snapped again and fled. He ran into the woods and ended up getting his leg trapped (he wasn't really stuck, but he wasn't thinking straight). Thinking he was trapped and was going to die, he cut his foot off. When Shin found him, he hit Shin with a branch which caused him to fall and hit his head. Both made it to the hospital. Literally like the day after Zee was discharged from the hospital, Lyra went to bother him and Zee was not in a good mood, he ended up provoking them and they stabbed his left eye out. So he went back to the hospital. Lyra ended up getting addicted to the poison pills and had Zee make more. When Zee tried a small dose he ended up getting high off it as well. He attacked Sou one evening and almost killed him, but he and Shin tried to fix Sou and alter his code so he wouldn't be a horrible parent to Mars. When Zee went to see if the code worked or not and saw it wasn't working, Zee wanted to test it and threatened Mars. Seeing Sou didn't care and being high off the pills, he stabbed Mars and left. He feels extremely guilty for what he did and pushed Mars away for awhile out of shame. Shin was pissed that Zee stabbed Mars and ended up trying to kill him, hitting him on the head with a wrench. Shin fled the scene shortly after and Zee was presumed to be dead for awhile. The Zee AI laptop that was with Shin disappeared for a few hours and ended up getting corrupted by Zee in order to get revenge on Shin, and since the laptop was connected to the Riley AI he ended up getting corrupted as well. The Zee AI started blaming everything on Shin and tormented him with his phobia of guns until Shin returned to Asu-Naro. Sobering up and realizing that was not a good thing, Zee ended up helping Shin out of Asu-Naro. After he was fired as the CEO of Asu-Naro, the position was filled by his ex, Kagami (known as Mirai). He and Mirai had dated several years ago and broke things off due to work. After breaking up, Mirai had grown very spiteful of Zee and Lyra. Mirai and Zee are now enemies, having butted heads again and again. Mirai tricked Shin into thinking Zee was cheating on him, and Zee tricked Mirai into cutting off his finger. However, under the promise of Shin being protected, Zee has reluctantly agreed to work and not sabotage the next Death Game. Zee is basically assigned to take over Sou’s role, acting as a floormaster for the game and getting all candidates to sign the consent form. In a fit of rage from everything going on, Zee killed his mother brutally, enacting the same tortures he had to endure because of her and from his life. Asu-Naro swept it all under the table. Zee harassed Mirai by calling him his real name as well as just general hating, so Mirai killed Maeko and brainwashed Lyra to stab Shin. With Shin in the hospital, Brainwashed Lyra broke into Zee and Shin’s apartment and left a threatening message in blood. This was the final straw for Zee, who snapped. When Shin was discharged from the hospital, Zee knocked him out and dragged him to an unknown house. He was tied in the basement until he was able to convince Zee to untie him under the promise he wouldn’t run away. However, he fled as soon as Zee looked away, noticing several suspicious items on the table, some of which suggesting he would be losing another body part. Eventually, he realized what Zee was up to and could die and returned to find Zee bleeding and thankfully unsuccessful in his attempts to remove his own organ. There was surgical stitching equipment on the table and Shin messily stitched Zee up, with Zee telling him ‘not to touch the vial on the table’ and was fearful of ‘infecting himself’. Thankfully, Zee survived, and Aurora fixed the horrible stitches.

Henleu! I have one more idea UwU (for this round that is) maybe bleach: headcanons for Kensei, Hisagi and Renji reacting to an s/o who insists on some cute rituals: always saying I love you before they leave, always giving a forehead kith before sleeping, no matter how angry or tired they are. Always greeting them when they come home (which is funny when they're pissed). gender can be neutral, just loads of fluff! Again, feel free to play with it! Many smoochhhh (on forehead as well UwU)
Henlo my dear ❤ Sorry this took a while, enjoy the fluff! Many forehead smoochessss! UwU
Kensei
Tumblr media
Kensei has a rather short fuse, certainly when it comes to things he perceives as immature. Now these rituals aren’t at all immature, though with his serious personality, Kensei will easily perceive these as such, certainly early on in the relationship, when he isn't used to you yet.
Saying ‘I love you’ before leaving is one he can appreciate. As a Shinigami, Kensei puts his life on the line every day, so saying those words before leaving is definitely not a bad thing. Hearing it just brings a smile to his face, and he's not embarrassed when he returns those words.
Forehead smooches are fine too, though he prefers a regular kiss. Don’t start on the ‘it’s a seed for a good dream’ though. He doesn’t believe in that. It’s definitely something that will make him even angrier if he is already angry.
Greeting him when he comes home is something he enjoys though. Seeing your face whenever he comes back home makes him feel a little better, no matter how bad his day has been, or how angry he is.
As time passes, Kensei will get more and more used to your little rituals, to the point where they don’t bother him anymore at all, and where he’ll definitely notice if one of them is missing from his day.
Eventually he'll come to genuinely like them, however he does prefer to keep them to the privacy of your home. Kensei is not the kind of person to put his love life on display or to show it off, certainly not when he's supposed to be working.
Also he just doesn't want to be teased by his fellow shinigami. Certainly not Shinji, Hiyori and Lisa. It's not like he wants to keep your relationship a secret, he just doesn’t want them to find out about your rituals.
Hisagi
Tumblr media
Hisagi pretends to be a big shot a lot of the time. Sometimes, he even really thinks he is. But in reality, he's a big softie with his own set of insecurities.
Your rituals actually really flatter him. They make him feel loved and appreciated, but at the same time they fluster him a little because he's not used to such displays of affection. And it's very obvious he gets flustered, because Hisagi blushes very easily and very brightly. He hates that he does and he will deny it when you point it out, even when it's clear as day.
He will always reciprocate your rituals. Saying ‘I love you’ was a little bit of a struggle early in the relationship, but he gets better at it over time. Eventually he says it as easy as you, every morning before either of you leave the house.
Hisagi will actually wait in the hallway when he comes home, pretending to take a long time to take off his shoes. He loves that you come to greet him when he comes home. A small kiss, a hug, and he’s ready to step into the house.
Forehead kisses took him the longest to get used to. It’s never a kind of kiss he associated with a romantic relationship, so it confused him a little at first. He never stopped you from doing it though, it’s not like it made him uncomfortable. Eventually he’ll start giving you a kiss on your forehead in return, and the smile on your face is enough for him to keep doing it.
He gets really embarrassed if other shinigami find out about these rituals, but he won’t stop you from doing it. Though he’s worried about the opinion of his peers, Hisagi is not ashamed of his relationship with you. He just tries to keep a cool expression and hopes nobody will tease him about it.
Renji
Tumblr media
Renji is actually way more affectionate than he lets people believe. He’s a tough guy and his manners are only there when they really have to be, but when it’s just the two of you, away from prying eyes, all of that toughness leaves his demeanour and he is completely focussed on you, and on keeping you close.
Renji probably picks up on your rituals the fastest of these three. Some displays might startle him a little at first because he didn’t see them coming, but he absolutely loves them.
Saying I love you? No problem. He wants to say it and he wants to hear you say it. It’s nice and comforting to hear. He’ll say it before leaving, before going to bed, whenever you do something for him,… any opportunity he gets.
Hugs? Anytime. He enjoys wrapping his arms around you, squeezing you tight for just a few seconds before relaxing his grasp around you and just holding you gently. If he could, he would keep one arm around you at all times.
Kisses, forehead, cheek or mouth, are the one thing that still manage to fluster him a little. There’s just something special about a kiss, something romantic. He’ll always either return the kiss of give you a hug, just to make sure you never feel like it’s one-sided.
Renji’s not too worried about people teasing him about you or your rituals. He’ll just brush it off, which makes the teasing stop really fast. He’s proud to call you his, and he’ll gladly bring you along to different places, including places where his friends and fellow shinigami are. Sometimes when he gets caught up in the idiocy of the people around him he’ll go along with their antics though, and then he’ll yell at them to stop teasing him about you, because ‘he’d never be ashamed to call you his’.

New Possibilities
Tumblr media
Category: Romance, Friendship
Fandom: Noragami
Characters: Hiyori Iki, Yato, Yukiné
Hiyori’s eyebrows were scrunched tightly together, forming a deep furrow in the middle of her brow. Her rose-colored eyes stared intently at the letter she held in her hands, addressed to her in neat, printed letters. The addressee was a sticker with “University of Tokyo College of Clinical Medicine” printed in bold, black letters over the circular orange-and-blue logo. Here in her hands, she held her destiny—the decision on her admittance or rejection from the top medical school in Japan.
As her fingers began to shake, she squeezed her eyes shut so she could force herself to breathe deeply in and out. There was no time to be nervous! If she got to in her head, she wouldn’t be able to open the letter! She squashed the feeling of nausea rising in her stomach before snapping her eyes open, rose irises burning with determination.
Before she could talk herself out of it, she flipped the envelope around so she could tear open the top, careful not to accidentally rip the letter in the process. She let the envelope flutter to the floor after removing the folded piece of paper inside. She gulped while she stared at the blank white backside, nervousness rising once more inside her. With trembling fingers, she slowly straightened out the paper and skipped down to the first line of words printed on the fancy letterhead.
“Dear Miss Iki, we are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted…”
Hiyori didn’t even finish the sentence, for a squeal burst out of her mouth, unable to be contained. She threw her arms in the air and began to jump around her room, delighted cries of “Yes, yes, yes!” gushing from her overjoyed body. She was going to medical school, the best medical school! She was going to be a doctor!
She stopped hopping around to snap her face back to the letter, reading it once, twice, three times to make sure that she wasn’t dreaming. No, there it was in black and white—Hiyori was accepted. Tears blossomed in the corners of her eyes, and she didn’t even bother to wipe them away, just let them roll down her cheeks. This was one of the happiest days of her life, so a few happy tears were definitely in order.
She hugged the letter to her chest, and the sound of the paper crinkling was music to her ears.
I can’t wait to tell Yato!
~~~~~~~~~~
 Of course, societal norms dictated that Hiyori phone her parents first, which she did. Both of them were working, but they both screamed in triumph when Hiyori delivered the good news. They laughed, they cried, they gushed about Hiyori’s new possibilities, and Hiyori basked in the warm glow of their pride. However, the world did not stop turning even for such a celebratory cause, and so Hiyori eventually had to bid them adieu. That was all right, though; they would have a proper party once they returned home from work, and this gave Hiyori plenty of time to spread the news to the other important people in her life.
Kofuku was sitting on the porch of her little shop when Hiyori came running up, cheeks pink from breathlessness. The goddess cocked her head to the side as the girl approached in such a tizzy, and then her gaze dropped to the opened letter flapping around in her hand.
“Ahh! Hiyori, is it today?” the girl cried and jumped up while putting her hands together in delight. “Oh, oh, you probably want to tell Yato first—he’s in the back! Yukiné went down the street to get some bubble teas, so I’ll let him know as soon as he’s back to come see you! Now hurry, hurry! Daikoku and I want to hear, too!”
“Thanks, Kofuku!” Hiyori grinned as she skirted around the porch, leaving the goddess to impatiently squirm while she trotted around the back of the small convenience store. She rounded the back of the building to the small yard behind, and she found Yato lazing about among the roots of a tree, eyes closed and hands resting behind his head.
“Yato, Yato!” she cried, and he cracked a cyan eye open at the sound of her voice. She came bounding up to him, eyes sparkling. However, her legs finally gave out from all the frantic running, and so she collapsed on her knees at his side. “Oof…”
‘“Did you run all the way here?” he chuckled as he sat up. Hiyori nodded with a mournful croon and rubbed her burning calves, prompting Yato to laugh. “Silly Hiyori, I know you love to see me, but—” he stopped his flirty joke when he caught sight of the letter in her lap. “... Is that what I think it is?”
“Yes!” Hiyori squeezed out between gulps of air. She tossed her head up, flipping her disarrayed hair out of her face, and held up the letter proudly. “I was accepted to Tokyo University! I’m going to be a doctor, Yato!”
It seemed to take him a moment to register the news. He blinked slowly, staring at the letter with a blank expression. Hiyori tilted her head to the side in confusion; wasn’t he happy for her? Just as she was about to inquire, his expression softened and he reached up to pat Hiyori’s head affectionately.
“I knew you could do it, Hiyori. Congratulations,” he said with a sweet smile. Hiyori giggled as he ruffled her already wind-swept hair; his hand felt good, tousling the strands and running across her scalp. She enjoyed it for a second, then opened her eyes. Yato couldn’t wipe the sadness from his expression before Hiyori noticed it. He knew she saw, too, as he blushed and dropped his gaze to the grassy ground. His hand stayed atop her head, and Hiyori reached up to grab it while staring at him in confusion.
“Yato… What is it?”
He chewed on his lip while he debated answering. Hiyori lowered his hand to hold it in front of her chest, squeezing it with both of hers. Finally, his eyes flickered up to meet hers, and she was taken aback by how guilty and miserable he looked.
“I shouldn’t… It’s selfish of me.”
“Well, you can be a little selfish, Yato. I don’t mind.”
A smile tugged at his lips, and he looked at her with amused hopelessness. I can’t resist when you say it like that, his expression said, and it made Hiyori’s heart thump in her chest.
“I guess… It’s just finally hitting me that you’ll be leaving me, Hiyori.”
“Huh? Who said I was leaving?” Hiyori blinked. Yato made a choking sound and reared back a little, obviously surprised by her blatant rebuttal. Hiyori smiled, pulling his hand to rest over her heart. “Yato, you’re the most important person in the world to me. Even if I’m going off to college, that doesn’t mean that we can’t be together anymore!”
“You mean… You see me in your future, Hiyori?”
Hiyori opened her eyes at that, a blush painting her cheeks. Yato was leaning forward now, his expression intense. Those cyan eyes burned with something unlike she’d ever seen, and it sent electricity buzzing through her nerves. Though she had the urge to run and hide, embarrassed by what was happening, she also wanted nothing more than to see where this would go. Squirming, she managed a little nod.
“O-of course, Yato…”
Of course, Yato was never surprised for long. That cocksure smirk spread over his lips, and as he leaned in a little further, a mischievous twinkle began to gleam in his bright blueish eyes.
“Oh? What do you think about?”
“I-I think about… You being there when I graduate…” she admitted. Oh, but that wasn’t all, and Yato knew it, too. It was like that roguish stare of his was magic, and it was pulling out all her deepest, darkest secrets with effortless ease. “I, um… I think about… U-us dating, and um… Getting married… And… Maybe… Having children…”
Her voice grew smaller and smaller with each damning admission until she was shrinking into herself and whispering meekly. She hid her face behind his hand, which she was still holding like a treasure, while she looked at him with uncertain eyes. Yato just kept that same stupid smirk on his face the entire time, given no indication of how he felt about it. Anxiety began to roil in her belly. What if he would laugh at her? What if he didn’t feel the same? Yato was a trickster, but he wouldn’t be this mean, would he?
No. Not my Yato.
“I’m relieved,” Yato said, and suddenly his expression was melting. He scooted a little closer to her, and his free hand pushed into the grass by her waist as he angled his body over hers until she was looking up into his face. He freed his other hand from her grip so he could caress her face—tracing a path down her cheek to her chin until his thumb traced the border of her lips. “I think about those things, too, Hiyori. I didn’t want them to be just thoughts.”
“Yato… Are you saying…?” she asked quietly, but her voice failed her. She just looked at him pleadingly, and Yato’s smile somehow got impossibly softer even though it already felt like Hiyori was beginning to float in the clouds.
“I’m saying that I love you, Hiyori, and I want to be a part of your future if you’ll let me,” Yato said.
Hiyori sucked in a breath, and suddenly the tears came flooding back. She couldn’t stop them; she was so overwhelmed with happiness and relief and all the emotions in between. All she could do was nod emphatically. Yato chuckled gently, using his hand to thumb her tears away until she managed to quiet down into little sniffles. As she blinked repeatedly, trying to dislodge the little salty droplets still clinging to her lashes, she didn’t notice Yato’s face closing in.
His lips met hers, and the first thing that struck her was how soft his lips were. They were like silk, perfect against her own. Hiyori melted into him, eyes fluttering as she savored the meeting of their mouths and everything that meant.
They pulled apart, but only by a few centimeters. They stared into each other’s eyes, and Yato began to caress her cheek again. I could get used to this…
“Hiyoriiiiiiii!” came a sudden wail, and the two of them sprang apart like they’d been struck. They hurried to find a position that made it look like they weren’t just kissing. Yato lounged back against the tree, while Hiyori sat on her knees an acceptable distance away while she played with one of her pigtails. Yukiné came bounded around the side of the building, looking panicked.
“Hiyori! Don’t go!” the boy wailed and flung himself across the yard. Hiyori exclaimed as he belly-flopped onto the ground next to her and planted his face write into her lap. He wrapped his arms tight around her waist as if he could keep her there through force alone. Hiyori chuckled and rested a hand on his back, and he looked up at her petulantly.
“Yukiné, I’m not going anywhere,” Hiyori chuckled. “I’ll still be around!”
“Promise?”
“Promise!” Hiyori reassured. Yukiné smiled and sagged into her, thoroughly relieved.
“Oi! Who do you think you are, hogging Hiyori?” Yato whined. Hiyori exclaimed as Yato draped himself over her shoulders, arms dangling down by her sides and chin propped in the crook of her neck.
“Ah! Are we doing group hugs?” they heard Kofuku yell, and they looked up just in time to see her sailing through the air. They all screamed when Kofuku crashed into them, sending Yato and Hiyori onto their backs. As they dog-piled at the base of the tree, they couldn’t help but burst into giggles. Hiyori wiggled her arm until she could pull out the acceptance letter, and her expression brightened.
I’ve got a great future ahead of me… And I’m glad everyone is going to be in it!
Hey guys! I’m compiling what I have so far for my YTTD Owl House AU!
-So Sara is getting sent to gaslight gatekeep girlboss camp or something like that. I can’t think of a way to put it into words, but Mr Chidouin isn’t as sympathetic as Camila is. She discovers a portal to the boiling isles and meets Keiji, who likes to do some free lance detective and vigilante work around the isles, along with some little “Fuck the government” stunts against the emperors coven and their corruption. Sara begs him to teach her magic and he agrees. Also there’s Megumi who’s been chasing after Keiji and she reveals that (gasp!) Keiji used to be a member of the emperors coven!
-Shin is King. Tries to be terrifying and dangerous but is just non-threatening and a nuisance at worst. I’m gonna say he’s a bit more humanoid than King and at least normal size, but he’s still got some non-human features, and he’s basically Keiji’s ‘guy in the chair’ for all their operations and he claims his name is ‘Sou Hiyori’ because he took it off an actual demon.
-Gin is the house guard. He can morph into any feline or canine creature to fend off intruders, and Megumi can’t figure out how she’s getting beaten by a 12 year old.
-Kanna is still Shins real sibling adopted by the Kizuchis but they know each other in this au. Sometimes when the group needs to duck from the emperors coven they hide there, but they’re usually not allowed to stay too long because mama and papa Kizuchi don’t approve of Keiji.
-When Sara eventually enrolls at Hexside she makes friends with Joe and Anzu! Joe takes beast keeping, and all his beasts are dog-esque creatures, and Anzu does illusions she uses to put on clown shows.
-Ranmaru…. So I actually did a poll and as per the results, he will not be pulling a logic route crazy ass bit. He’ll still be the love interest though, working in healing, and he’ll totally admire the emperors coven. He doesn’t get much in the way of respect, but Sara is pretty nice to him, so he reciprocates and tries to help her with her magic training. What he doesn’t like is Keiji, wanted criminal, training her and probably poisoning her mind, and I’ll totally set you on the right track Sara (but he gets a redemption arc, like I said, the poll wanted good end ransara)
Happy Valentines Day! I’m posting this a day early out of both eagerness and the fact that there’s a big ice storm floating overtop of me right now that is threatening to knock my power out.
CULTURAL NOTES FOR THIS FANFIC: Valentines Day in Japan is a day when girls give chocolates to their romantic interests/significant others but also to friends. Obligation chocolate is what you would give to friends—affordable, non-pricey chocolate. Honmei chocolate is either homemade or expensive chocolate and is given with romantic intention.
On White Day (March 14th) the boys get to return the favor. And yes, I plan on writing a white day fic as well.
Just as Sweet
Hiyori was nodding along and smiling as Yama excitedly discussed her plans for Valentine’s Day with her boyfriend as they walked home. Still, as happy as she was for her friend, her thoughts drifted to whether or not she should do anything other than obligation chocolate for Yato as she did for the rest of her friends.
“And you, Hiyori?” Ami’s voice knocked her out of her internal debate.
Blinking in confusion, she questioned back, “What about me?”
“What about that guy on your phone sensei caught you staring at? Are you doing anything for him?” She wiggled her eyebrows, intrigued.
Hiyori felt like her face had caught fire, unable to form words.
“That’s right! Who is that guy, anyway?” Yama immediately jumped in, moving closer as they slowed to a stop.
“H-he’s just a friend!” She managed to finally spit out, though she quickly felt herself growing light headed with embarrassment.
The two other girls looked at each other, clearly not buying it.
“Right.” Yama dragged out, “But! You do have a picture, right? Show us, just for the fun of it.”
“If he’s just a friend, it’s no big deal, right?” Ami echoed her sentiments mischievously.
“You two are…” Hiyori grumbled to herself, reaching into her pocket with a shaking head as she huffed, “Fine.” As they shared their squeals of success, she sighed to herself as she unlocked her phone and moved to photos. ‘Most of the pictures I have are selfies from him stealing my phone when I’m tutoring Yukine-kun…’
Finding one she deemed as relatively acceptable, she held out her phone and turned her head away, “Here.” Her ears were instantly filled with more high-pitched squeals and she flinched.
“Hiyori!”
“He’s gorgeous! Again, who exactly who is this guy!? How did you meet him?”
She took a breath and shoved her phone back into her pocket, not sure how to respond. “I, um. You know the younger boy I mentioned before that I tutor? They live together.”
Ami squinted, “So you mean he’s his older brother?”
Hiyori shook her head, “No, he’s more like, um… his guardian?”
“So older guys are your thing, huh?” Yama snapped her fingers as she came to her realization. She winked and elbowed Hiyori, “Wow, and I thought being a closet wrestling fan was your only rebellious trait.”
She covered her face with both of her hands, pleading, “Stop.”
Yama and Ami shared a laugh before Ami repeated, “So… are you going to make chocolate or anything?”
“I don’t know yet.” Hiyori only slightly moved her hand to answer her friends.
“Why not?” Yama tilted her head, frowning.
Hiyori lowered her hands but turned her head away, her voice soft, “I don’t think he would return my feelings.” Before she knew it, she felt both of her friend’s hands on her shoulders.
“You never know until you try!” Ami gave her a gentle pat, “I think you should go for it.”
“And I think the same!” Yama let go of her to give her a thumbs up with a wide grin, “Besides, wouldn’t it be so fun to go on double dates?”
Hiyori laughed nervously, answering, “Yeah, sure…” Taking another breath, she commented, “Thanks, both of you.”
“Of course.” They both flashed more smiles and continued forward.
She returned as much of a smile as she could muster, but her feelings were bittersweet. ‘It’s so much more complicated than I can tell you. I wish I could. And I wish you could meet everyone, but… even I’m not supposed to be as involved as I am.’
Now that dinner was finished, the time had come to go through with her plan. The only problem was she hadn’t quite figured out how to ask Yato how to come by himself and not bring Yukine. As much as she loved the younger boy, she very much did not want him to be present for what was essentially going to be spilling her heart out to his god.
After going through various scenarios in her head, she decided to keep it plain and simple. Her heartbeat so loud that it was ringing in her ears, she typed out her text on her phone.
Can you come over soon? And by yourself if possible.
She hesitantly hit send and held her breath as she waited. Finally, her phone beeped to signify Yato’s response.
Uhhh sure. Is everything okay?
She took a breath before answering.
Yes everything’s fine
After another brief moment of silence, her phone beeped again.
Just give me a few minutes
Her heart continued to beat erratically within her chest, making the time pass both impossibly slow and fast at the same time. So, when her phone eventually rang, she wasn’t sure if she felt ready or not. In her hesitation, the phone rang several times before she finally hit the answer button.
“I had to sneak away from Yukine.” He announced as he appeared in a flash of bright light, “And it wasn’t easy, so you’d better make it worth it, Hiyori.” He finished with a wide grin.
Her mouth already dry at the sight of his smile, she swallowed and apologized, “S-sorry.”
“You getting sick? Your voice sounds kinda off.” He tilted his head and took a step closer.
Hiyori quickly shook her head, “No, no. I just could probably use some water…”
“On it!” Yato volunteered excitedly, dashing out her bedroom door before she could even get a word in.
Exasperated, she collapsed backward onto her bed and took the opportunity to at least try and calm herself down. Of course, all progress she made vanished as soon as he popped back in the door.
“Here you go,” He kneeled down and held it out.
Sitting back up, she nodded gratefully as she took it into her hands and took a sip. Sitting the glass down carefully on her desk, she looked back up to Yato, “You can’t just wander freely around the house like that, Yato. What if my big brother had been home?”
“I would just say I’m getting a glass of water?” He shrugged, “I wouldn’t worry about it too much, Hiyori. He’s kind of a weirdo himself.”
‘You’re completely missing the point.’ She held her palm up to her forehead, “If you say so.”
“So, really,” Yato sat down on the bed, across from her, “What’d you call me over for?”
She met his eyes and let out slowly, “I wanted to… give you something.”
His eyes widened curiously as he repeated, “Give me something?”
Hiyori nodded before looking down to her lap sheepishly.
“Oh—that’s right. It’s Valentine’s Day. I appreciate the thought, but I don’t really need obligation chocolate or anything.” He gave a small, forced laugh, “Of course I’ll take anything to Yukine, Kofuku and Daikoku, though—”
“I-it is chocolate, but it’s not out of obligation…” She still didn’t meet his gaze, reaching to the drawer in her desk to pull out a white box with a red bow, “…I-I made it myself, so it may not be the best, but I think it’s okay.”
There was a brief pause but Yato started to call out her name, “Hiyori—”
“Just let me get this out, okay?” She forced a smile as she looked up and he nodded, clearly looking concerned. “I’m sort of just using Valentine’s Day as an excuse to say all of this because I’ve wanted to tell you for a while now, but I didn’t know how to.”
She slid the chocolate box towards him, while getting up from the bed and beginning to pace around her room as she explained, “I realized I was in love with you back when you were gone. Kazuma-san sort of helped me come to that conclusion even if… it wasn’t exactly in the nicest way, to put it lightly.”
“What? What did he do?” Yato asked, his voice sharp and dark.
Hiyori glanced back at him briefly, “Don’t—don’t worry about it right now. He’s apologized since then. Anyway, we’ve obviously had a lot of important things going on that needed your full focus. Especially helping Yukine-kun get settled again. So, I didn’t want to say anything about my feelings, because I don’t really know how you feel. I know you really care about me and sometimes go over the top with that… but I don’t know how you really feel.”
She turned back to him but kept her eyes low, her hands clasped together, “So I held it in, at least until now. I know there’s never really going to be a perfect time, but I also don’t think I can keep lying to myself. Or to you, either. I just hope… no matter what, we can still be friends. Because I can’t imagine my life without you. That’s why I’ve told you over and over that I don’t want to cut our ties and that I don’t want to lose you.”
Yato wordlessly slipped off the bed and stood up.
Just as Hiyori felt the tears start to drip down her face, all of the built-up emotions finally pouring out, she felt him wrap his arms around her in a tight embrace. His face buried against her neck, she soon felt his own tears wetting her skin.
She wasn’t sure if she should laugh or feel worse, “I’ve got you crying now, too?” She reached up over his shoulders to wipe at her own eyes.
“Well, yeah.” He answered as if it were the most obvious thing in the world, adding a sniffle as he finished. He pulled back from her slightly, his hands lingering at her shoulders, “Hiyori, you… how do I even put this.” He let out a breath, “For so long I’ve been a minor god, no name, no shrine, nothing to hold on to. And then I met you and… you helped me with Yukine. You helped me understand him and become a better god so that I could take care of him like he deserved. You built me my first shrine. You’ve showed me time and time again that all my efforts to change aren’t useless. How could I not love you?”
Hiyori paused and swallowed, “I appreciate you saying that—but I’m not sure if you mean it in quite the same way.”
“Not the same way…?” Yato repeated, looking her over with a confused look.
“When I say I love you, I mean as so much more than just a friend. Kazuma-san and Tenjin-sama told me that gods—” She didn’t get to finish before he reached up to cup her face, leaning forward to press his lips against hers.
He only lingered for a moment before he pulled away, a small smile spreading across his features, “I have no idea what those two said, but I’m pretty sure I know what I mean.” He moved the hand that wasn’t resting against her face to her waist, pulling her ever so slightly closer to him, “But I can prove it to you if you need me to.”
Hiyori’s lips parted in shock and her voice caught in her throat before she managed to answer, “N-no, I believe you.” Her face was so hot she felt like her head was going to explode.
Yato pressed his forehead against hers, letting out, “That’s a relief. Although, I’ll admit I did sort of want to.”
“Of course you did.” She sighed in response before they both let out a round of laughter. “But in all seriousness,” She pressed her lips to his, “I love you.”
He answered her kiss eagerly when given the chance before giving his answer, “I love you too.” With that, he moved his hand to the back of her head and pulled her into a tight embrace again.
The Undead
So, this is months late, but I don’t care. Have some more Monstrous May. This is for day 9: The Undead
Fandom: Bleach
***
The time was finally here.
He looked at Aizen, who was watching all of them. Not from the spot they all thought, but that was fine. Kisuke knew the man was probably so smug that he had tricked them.
Kisuke was better attuned to track the man any way.
Though it appeared that Ichigo was also confused. He was glancing at Aizen, and then around as if trying to figure out what was going on.
The plan had been to wait, let Isshin and Yoruichi battle him and wear him down.
But the pulse of revengerevengerevenge was beating too strongly in Kisuke’s chest. Just as it has been since he had woken up on the floor of his cell, covered in vomit and aware that something was Wrong.
Not that it had been something he could focus on at the time. He had more important things to do, and his guards didn’t seem to notice anything off. They had only washed him off to take him to his trial. Which had gone poorly and he had more important things to deal with other than what was wrong with him.
Over the years, he had done his research. It had to be careful, because if the others had figured out what he was researching, he would have worried them.
He was going to hurt them in the end. Better to let them have the good memories now.
For years, Kisuke had managed to keep his secret, safe and quiet in his chest. It beat there along with the urge to murder, to take his revenge on the man who had taken everything from him.
So now that he saw him, the urge to do just that was too strong to ignore.
Kisuke blurted, pushing himself to the extreme. There was screams and yells as he landed, people torn between moving to help and  scattering as something large landed from the sky.
He looked down at the frightened eyes of Hinomori. Everything told him that it was the sad little lieutenant of the 5th looking up at him.
But in his core, the force that drove him, that wanted to finish that revenge, it knew who was pinned under him. That was not some simple sense, able to be tricked by someone else’s magic. This was a primal force of magic, something that warped the very laws of reality to enable the weapons it created.
With a snarl, Kisuke leaned down and ripped Aizen’s throat out with his teeth.
A zanpakuto drove into his back, but Kisuke ignored it. That wasn’t important at this point. No, what was important was the blood in his mouth, Aizen’s blood. The way the other flailed, his illusions starting to fail as he bled.
Rearing his head back, Kisuke spit the mouthful of flesh and blood to the side. Then he curled in, mouth dropping lower.
The taste of the Hogyoku on his tongue was a sizzle of power, vision whiting out for a moment as he knocked aside the hands that tried to push his head away. Then Kisuke
Bit.
Down.
The Hogyoku, along with the flesh that surrounded it, came away in his mouth. Instinct drove him, and Kisuke swallowed. It hurt as he did as if he was swallowing a lump of hot coal, drinking something of flame and pain.
Under him, Aizen screamed as best he could through a mangled throat. The man’s skin was not knitting together, not smoothing back into perfect flesh.
In Kisuke, the Hogyoku flared, and he screamed in pain as the two powers in his chest battled.
The blade in his back vanished, and he hoped it was from the person wielding it pulling it free, not him destroying it by accident. That would have been rude. Even if they had stabbed him first.
Under his hands, Aizen was dying. Kisuke lifted his head, still crouched over the man, looking down at him.
“You shouldn’t have killed me,” he said with a snarling smile. “This, you brought down on yourself.”
Aizen’s eyes were full of confusion and fear. The man who would be god was confused and scared of death.
Good.
Kisuke watched as the life in the man’s eyes flickered and faded. Eventually, it was gone completely.
Still, he watched. Long enough to know for sure.
Then he sat up and screamed all his anger out.
He had avenged his own death. It tasted sweet.
Turning his head, he found himself looking into Rangiku’s eyes.
“Tell them I am sorry,” he said.
Then the force that had kept him moving for the last century spluttered out, and Kisuke fell.
***
Ichigo wasn’t sure what was going on. Not really. He had come out and struck Aizen, only to have him pretty much laugh as Zangetsu had bounced off his kido ward. Then a lot of stuff happened, and it wasn’t Aizen looking down at them anyone, it was Hinomori.
Then Urahara popped up and everything went mad.
He watched as the man appeared from nowhere and Ichigo could only barely track the flash step that he used to slam into where Aizen was on the ground. Then….
Ichigo had to glance away. That was…ew. He had not expected Urahara to use his teeth like that. It made his stomach squirm in a way that was distinctly uncomfortable.
He glanced back as the blond screamed. Uncertain on what was going on, Ichigo glanced around at everyone. They all seemed to be confused. Especially Rangiku, who….
Had she stabbed Urahara?
That that it seemed to bother the man. He sat up, half sitting on Aizen’s legs, half crouched over the man. His face was covered with blood, hat nowhere to be found. The man looked wild, a smile that was all teeth clear even from where Ichigo was. Then Kisuke had said something to Rangiku and….slumped.
As if everything had suddenly turned off, Urahara went limp, eyes still half-open as he hit the ground.
Ichigo had never moved so fast in his life.
He slid to a stop, just as Yoruichi joined him. And…his dad?
Who was in a Shinigami uniform?
What?
Ichigo’s head was reeling as he was trying to take everything in. Urahara limp as Yoruichi and his dad starting working on them. A moment later, Shinji was there with Hiyori in his arms.
“What the fuck,” said the older Visored, staring down at Urahara as if he had never seen the man before. Which Ichigo could understand.
Urahara was always in control of things. Even when he was being a brat, teasing Ichigo while training him, Ichigo knew the man had a plan for things. There was always vibrant energy around him, something that crackled and raged.
Ichigo had always thought it was Benihime, given the way Kisuke talked about her.
Seeing him like this, so very still and…empty…..
Was Urahara dead?
Then Unohana was there, and she shoved all of them aside. “Clear the area,” she told them, voice harsh. “If he wakes up, none of you will be safe. Not at first.”
As much as he wanted to argue, Ichigo found himself being pushed back with the others. When Unohana decided something, nobody wanted to argue with him.
“What is going on?” he hissed at Shinji.
The other man frowned, focus obviously inwards. Then he frowned more. “Later, Ichigo. I got an idea, but if it’s the case, ya don’t want to be there if Kisuke wakes up.”
He nudged Ichigo, then flat out shoved him at Isshin. Who caught Ichigo and the world blurred around them.
Okay, if he couldn't get answers about Urahara then he’d get them about Isshin, and what the hell was going on around here.
***
Waking up was…unexpected. From everything he researched, once he had gotten his revenge, Kisuke was supposed to return to being dead once again. Not waking up in what appeared to be the Shoten.
“Well, you are calmer than I had imagined you would have been,” came a familiar voice, if not what he normally heard in his territory. He glanced to the side and saw that Unohana was sitting beside him, her Zanpakuto sheathed at her side.
Not that her weapon being there would have stopped her from putting him down if she needed to. Kisuke had seen her use Kido.
“I hadn’t expected to wake up at all,” he admitted, carefully sitting up. Careful for two reasons. First, he didn’t know what to expect from his body. It ached, but less like he had hurt himself, more like he had just had a long spar.
Second reason to be careful was that he had no idea how Unohana would react to him moving. She was one of those from before the system was put together. Who knew what was roaming around before the Shinigami organized and became the force they were now.
And revenants were frightfully close to Hollows.
Unohana smiled slightly. “It has been known to happen. If one of your kind takes in a new power source before the one pushing for revenge fades, it can replace it.” She tilted her head. “I would stay silent about what it was you once were. Only a few of us recognized what you had become, but we also know you did us a great service in dealing with Aizen.”
She studied him, eyes cool and collected, a hint of violence in the depths.
In a way, it was nice to get her respect enough that she’d allow him to see the latter.
“We should spar at some point, Urahara-san. I believe it would be most entertaining.”
Okay, getting her respect was also a lot terrifying.
“Please make the most of your second chance,” the woman added, standing gracefully. “If you wish, contact me at some point and I would be happy to help tell you about some of the talents you are likely to see as you age. Those such as you are very rare, and not much is written.”
Then she smiled, one that was actually tinged with humor instead of being terrifying. “Though I think it will be fun to watch as you have to explain to your friends about what it is that you are.”
Definitely a lot of terrifying having her focus. How did Kenpachi deal with it all the time?
***
Kisuke had debated how he should do this. First, he grabbed Tessai and Yoruichi. They deserved to know, more than anymore.
Plus, with just the two of them, neither of the others would feel like they had to hide their reactions. Which meant he was crushed in hugs and wept on a bit.
Yoruichi would blame Tessai for the tears, but both of them had been upset when they discovered the truth.
The fact they had almost lost him for good had hurt both of his friends, and they had reacted poorly to that.
Which meant this second talk had been delayed a bit. Kisuke could still feel his friends lurking around, which was expected. Knowing them, he was going to have them hover over him for a bit.
That made him smile a little. It was always good to know they cared.
Now Shinji and Ichigo sat in front of him.
He had debated on it but finally decided that he should tell them. Shinji was his closest friend outside of Tessai and Yoruichi, and in charge of the Visored.
And Ichigo just deserved to know the truth for once. Kisuke had already heard that Isshin had clammed up over telling the boy anything on his own past.
They had to meet in his bedroom, however. Tessai had looked rather terrifying at the idea of Kisuke leaving his bed too soon. So that meant he was sitting on his futon, sipping his tea as the others settled.
“I take it ya are goin’ to tell us about what the fuck all that was,” Shinji said easily, holding his own cup. Beside him, Ichigo was scowling more than normal, eyes flicking over Kisuke repeatedly as if to make sure the other wasn’t hiding injuries.
It was so adorable. Ichigo had brought Kisuke into the circle of those people who he considered his to protect.
Kisuke decided to be blunt for once.
“I’m dead,” he said calmly. “I’ve been dead, properly dead, for about a century.” He watched with a hint of amusement as Shinji choked on his tea.
“What?” Ichigo was staring at him, jaw dropped a bit as he tried to puzzle that out. “Aren’t you technically dead anyway?”
Kisuke shook his head. “I am a soul. As you know, that means I can be killed and returned to the cycle to be reborn later.”
Given Ichigo’s expression, he may not have known that. Kisuke added it to the list of things to start teaching Ichigo more about. If he was going to be dealing with Soul Society long-term, he needed a better idea of what it contained.
“When I was jailed, before the farce of a trial, I believe Aizen arranged for me to be poisoned.” He watched the pair of them, Shinji’s color slowly draining.
“He what?” the Visored hissed. Taking another sip of his tea, Kisuke answered.
“He arranged for my death. The reason I know it was him was that I…woke up, and all I could think was revenge upon my murderer.”
Shinji made a noise of recognition. “Y’re a revenant,” he said, tone dark. He studied Kisuke, frowning a bit. “How are you still movin?”
“Wait, he’s a what?” Ichigo glanced from one blond to the other, agitation and confusion clear on his face as he fidgeted. The teen looked like he wanted to fight something, even if he wasn’t sure what he should be fighting.
“A revenant,” Kisuke said slowly, “is an undead who rises to get revenge. They wake up from their death and begin to hunt. My ability to do so was limited, so I had a great deal more control over myself than some I have read about. They are…uncommon, and I have not been able to find out many details on them. Unohana-taicho has helped fill in some details for me.”
That got a snort from Shinji. “Yeah, she’d know about them.”
Ichigo went very quiet, very pale.
“You died?” he asked in a tiny voice. Kisuke looked at him, the boy’s eyes were wide, and there was something there that hinted he might tear up in a moment.
It was rather like looking at Yoruichi when she found out.
He had not realized that the other had become so attached to him.
“Twice,” Kisuke said softly. “Once when I died originally. Then a second once I completed my revenge. But my revenge is what also brought me back a second time.” He pressed a hand to his chest, where there was something new beating there. No longer was the whisper of revenge taking the place of a beating heart, warning his skin and keeping his mind sharp and limbs flexible.
“Part of killing Aizen, of getting my revenge, was removing the Hogyoku from him. In doing so, I consumed it. So when the need for revenge was over, with that driving force gone, the Hogyoku took its place.”
He looked at the pair of them. “So, it seems that I am dead, yet alive. So you shall have to deal with me for a time to come.”
Shinji scoffed, but Kisuke could see the relief in his friend’s eyes.
Ichigo looked even more relieved, uncertain.
Kisuke did what he would have done for Jinta or Ururu, and held his arms open, a silent offer.
One Ichigo took, slamming into Kisuke’s chest and hugging him tightly. Shinji moved as well, shifting so he was leaning against Kisuke’s shoulder, patting Ichigo’s back to help soothe him.
Poor boy. He must have been so stressed out for so long. Kisuke would have to take some of that from his shoulders.
They would talk more later. Right now, he just hugged Ichigo back, grateful for the chance to continue his undead life.
The Way You Said, "I Love You":  as we huddled together while a storm raged outside.
because yato really needs to hear it
    It was a particularly stormy night, both in terms of weather and ayakashi. The power had gone out due to the strong winds and rain. The group was lucky that they had already eaten dinner and that Daikoku had finished heating water for tea not too long before the storm picked up. Everyone had gathered in one room, under the kotatsu, to help keep Yukine's mind off of the dark.
    Hiyori pulled out school work for both her and Yukine to work on. Despite there being little light, she figured it would keep him preoccupied. Kofuku and Daikoku sat directly across from them while Yato sprawled himself across the floor. Yato claimed that he didn't need the kotatsu to keep warm since he had his 'trusty booze' to do that for him. They filled their hours with light-hearted stories and teasing Yato.
    The clock had reached 9:45, the wind and rain had let up quite a bit, and Yato had noticed a few yawns slip from Hiyori and Yukine's mouths every now and then. He could tell Hiyori would push herself to stay awake for however long Yukine would, so he sat up and spoke, "It's getting late, Yukine, enough with the studying. Why don't you go to sleep now?"
    "I can't fall asleep around you. You'll probably draw something crude on my forehead," he snapped back before letting out yet another yawn, which he quickly tried to cover up. Hiyori reached to close her textbook as she yawned again, too.
    "Stop fighting your sleep. It'd be best to rest anyway, so that you can stop thinking about the dark."
    Yukine grumbled under his breath about not being a scared little kid, but obliged. He followed Hiyori's actions and shut his own textbook. Daikoku stood up, saying something about how he and Kofuku would be heading off into their own room and told Yukine to call if he needed anything. "Okay," he said as he slid himself further underneath the kotatsu.
    "Goodnight, Yukki," Kofuku said before adding, "Hiyorin. Yato-chan."
    "Goodnight," the trio sleepily chimed together. Yato finally moved himself under the kotatsu and made himself comfortable, about ready to pass out.
    "I should get going, too," Hiyori said, stuffing her books into her bag.
    "Actually, I'd like it if you stayed," Yukine admitted. "I'm still feeling a bit nervous."
    "Oh, okay. No worries. I'll stay as long as you need," Hiyori smiled. She adjusted herself to sit more comfortably as she waited for Yukine to fall asleep. Even though the storm was still going, Hiyori felt content as she watched the two sleepy boys who grew to feel like her own family. She was happy that she gave Yukine comfort just by being around. When she believed that enough time had passed for both of them to be asleep, she leaned over and kissed their foreheads, whispering, "I love you."
    "Shh... I'm sleeping," Yato mumbled, rolling over, not quite registering what Hiyori just said.
    She panicked a little, as she had hoped neither of them would hear her. He's drunk and half asleep; he won't remember, she thought. Surely he won't... if he did realize what I had said, he'd have shot up, wide awake, and been obnoxious about it. Hiyori tossed and turned for a little while longer, eventually falling asleep herself.
~
    The wind was merely a breeze, the rain had slowed to a drizzle, the power had turned back on, and Hiyori was back in her own home, in her body.  With her arms stretched above her head, she closed her eyes and let out a yawn. Although she only had her eyes closed for a split second, that seemed to be enough time for Yato to appear from seemingly nowhere. She had to hold herself back from screaming and getting the attention of her whole family.
    "Yato, what are you doing here? And this early?" she asked in a voice only slightly louder than a whisper.
    "Wanted to make sure you made it back okay..." he said, trailing off. He stood there, fidgeting with his hands a bit longer.
    "You could've texted, y'know."
Yato hid his face behind his scarf before quickly mumbling, "Do you really love me?"
    She climbed out of her bed, getting closer to Yato to better hear him―although she already had an idea, she wanted to be sure. "Excuse me?" she asked, hoping she had heard him wrong and that he didn't remember what she had told him and Yukine.
    "Us," he corrected himself. "Do you really love us? Me and Yukine?"
    Hiyori's face turned bright red. "I thought you were asleep."
    "But do you?" Yato asked, trying again.
    "You two are like family now," Hiyori said. Her hands moved to hide her face. She was embarrassed, especially since she had gone out of her way to kiss their foreheads and if Yato remembered what she had said, then he must've remembered that as well. "Of course I do."
    "I love you, too." His face was buried in his scarf again, but she heard him fine that time. It almost sounded like he was on the verge of crying, so Hiyori removed her hands from her face and looked right at him.
    "Yato, are you okay? What's wrong?" she worried, hands reaching towards him to wipe away the tears threatening to fall.
    "It's just," he paused, "The only family I had before was Father and Nora... and they never truly felt like family."
    More tears began to fall and Hiyori gave up on trying to wipe them away. Instead, she just held him. She let him cry into her shoulder awhile longer before pulling away to give him a saddened smile.
    "Oh, and although he'd probably never admit it, I can tell the little brat loves you, too," Yato half-chuckled, trying to lighten up the mood.
    "That's why I waited until he was asleep to say it." They both laughed.
First of all i want to give a shout out to @ayumiko for letting me use her amazing gifs in my writing! I mean just look at them! Be sure to go check out her stuff <3 (the middle gif’s credit goes to @atticwraith)
Overlooked | Ikuya Kirishima x Reader
Anon asked: Hi! Can I request an Ikuya x reader? Maybe a reader who’s really outgoing and stuff, kind of like the total opposite of him. At first he’s kind of annoyed by them, but then he slowly warms up and actually misses them when they’re out sick from school. He goes and visits and things go from there! As a fic writer myself, I thank you so much for providing for fandoms! You’re doing amazing.
A/n: sorry if the ending is a bit tacky, I didn’t know exactly how to end it off
Genre: a bit angsty? fluff at the end
Word count: ~2k this ones a bit long
“Catch up with you guys later ok?” You waved your teammates goodbye as soon as you had spotted a familiar head of deep sea green hair.
“Hey Ikuya!” He turned around and was met with your big smile, nodding in response. You quickly made your way over to him before noticing a third party.
“Oh, hello to you too Hiyori.” Your smile was returned with a little wave of his own. Teeth clenched, because we know he’s internally screaming
“First name basis huh?” Hiyori asked tartly, however a smile still present on his features.
“No need to be so uptight! We’ve all been given a name for a reason, so we can be called by it! By the way we’ve all been acquainted long enough.” You nudged Hiyori slightly in return, glancing at Ikuya, who just cared about making it to class on time. “Which is why I’m constantly telling you two to also call me (f/n)!”
“Hmmm.” Hiyori gave you a closed eyed smile before picking up the pace to catch up with his friend. I’m telling’ ya, internal screaming.
“Hey you two! Wait up!”
Students shuffled into the classroom, you took your usual seat next to Ikuya. You were taking notes when something had caught your eye. “Woah! You’re a really good artist Ikuya!” You leaned in next to him, pointing at the little doodles on the edge of his paper. Instinctively, the boy grabbed his notebook, blocking it from your view.
“T-They’re nothing.” He stated simply and went back to writing, this time with a protective arm shielding his work.
“...you could just take the compliment you know..” you muttered looking away. You felt a tap on your shoulder, making your eyes light up, only to find that it was just another classmate asking for help. You sighed and leaned over behind Ikuya to try and explain the problem.
The bell rang not too soon after. You and Ikuya began gathering your things, fingers brushing slightly in the process. You had managed to stumble out a sorry, but found that the boy was already halfway out the door; oblivious to you, with a small dust of pink hinted on his cheeks.
The next few days were the same, school work, friends, volleyball (yes you play volleyball k? I was watching haikyuu. I couldn’t help it), more volleyball, and failed attempts at a conversation with Ikuya.
“Hey Ikuya! Check it out! There’s a new cafe that’s opened nearby, some friends and I are gonna go check it out, you wanna come?”
“No, sorry I’ve got plans.”
Each day made your heart sink even more, along with the pile of stress, schoolwork and volleyball weighing on your shoulders. Nevertheless, you put on the same bright smile, known to everyone around you, and kept on.
“(L/n)?” Your face lit up at the sound of the familiar voice to your right, “...my eraser rolled over, can you reach it?”
“Huh? Yeah sure!” You gave him a smile and bent down, holding your hand out slightly before something struck you.
Why? Why do I feel like I need his attention? Why am I so pathetic? The realization was like a stab, penetrating deeper and deeper.
“(L/n)?.....(l/n)?....are you okay?”
You broke out of your trance and reached for the eraser, “S-sorry.” You placed the eraser in Ikuya’s hand, who was now looking at you with slight concern. You were silent after that, paying mind to your own work, failing to notice the boy next to you glance at you with worry.
The rest of the day consisted of you dwelling in your own thoughts, ignoring the calls of your friends and teammates. Skipping practice, you went straight home and sprawled out on your bed. Picking up your nearby volleyball, spreading your fingers into a setting position, you began gently tossing the ball up and down with hundreds of thoughts beginning to cloud your brain. Ikuya was never one to hide his annoyance, you knew that. But maybe you did talk too much, and maybe some of your friendships were forced. Were you trying too hard? Were people, unlike Ikuya, hiding their annoyance? Your insecurities that you thought you had left long behind, came flooding back. You shut your eyes tightly, thinking that would make the thoughts go away, as you drifted off into a deep sleep.
You woke up to the sound of your alarm pounding at your head, and made your way to the bathroom. Leaning over the sink, you took a good look at yourself in the mirror. The thoughts of last night still swirling in your head, making it feel like it was going to explode. Suddenly you felt something rise at the back of your throat, as you scrambled towards the the toilet and let it all out. The throbbing sensation on your right side became more prominent, the lights around you making it worse.
A couple of hours later, you thought you had heard your phone ring. Quite a few times actually. Great to know people care about me, you thought sarcastically. You decided to stay home with all the lights off and the blinds tightly shut, every movement or thought pulsating your head further. You couldn’t remember exactly when, but you had eventually passed out on the couch, failing to hear the sound of your front door opening.
“(L/n)?....” Ikuya had suspected something was up with you these past couple of days. Although the facade you had built around you might have fooled another, you had been around to constantly bug, not that he really minded deep down, for Ikuya to realize you were acting different.
“(L/n)!” Ikuya panicked, his eyes adjusting to the dark space, to catch a glimpse of a limp silhouette passed out on the couch. He quickly came to your side, checking to make sure you were okay.
H-huh? You slowly began to wake to a hovering dark figure with amber eyes looking over you in concern. Ikuya?
Ikuya quickly backed away, face flushed and glad it was dark, once he had realized you were awake. You however, took a moment to just stare at him, headache or whatever forgotten.
Am I hallucinating? Why is Ikuya here?
“....you weren’t at school and your friends were saying how you weren’t answering any of their calls....you’ve been acting weird for the past couple of days....so I came to check on you...” Even in the dark, you could see the glimmer of his cat-like eyes.
Wait? He noticed?
“I also brought you the notes you all the notes and assignments you missed...your captain was pretty pissed off too...” He moved forward, hesitantly resting his hand on your forehead before moving to his bag to take out his notebook and some other papers. “You don’t feel all that warm...are you sure you’re not just skipping?”
Has he always been this talkative?
He stopped and turned expectantly, waiting for your reply. Before you could even think about opening your mouth, another surge of pain made its way, with you clenching the right side of your head in pain.
“M-migraine...” you managed to barely get out. Instantly, Ikuya was at your side, crouched down, back facing towards you.
“We should probably get you somewhere you can actually relax first.” He kept his pink-tinted face forward, waiting for you to climb onto his back, which you did without complaints. You warily pointed a finger in the direction of your bedroom, as he slowly made his way and rested you gently on the bed, before awkwardly standing off to the side. You pointed with your eyes, still in pain, to the edge of your mattress. After a few minutes of silence, you began to make sense of your situation.
“Why’d you come here Ikuya....?” You propped yourself against your pillows, head hung low to hide the blush creeping up your neck and cheeks.
Ikuya was silent for a bit before whispering ever so slightly, “You were more quiet than usual for the past week....I got worried....”
You were barely able to catch the last part as your eyes widened, before lowering back your gaze. “Shouldn’t you be relieved though? I’m not being annoying or a nuisance to you...”
Ikuya’s head shot up as he suddenly lunged towards you. “I don’t-,” before composing himself, “I don’t think you’re annoying...I actually like when you talk to me...” again, the last part barely above a whisper.
“Ikuya...” Another tinge pain shot up throughout the side of your head, as you let out a small whimper.
“D-do you need some medicine?! Where’s your cabinet?!” You let out a giggle, before it turned into full blown laughter, headache completely forgotten. Ikuya looked at you confused while you wiped the corners of your eyes. There was something about your disheveled, humorous state, that made Ikuya feel a complexity of emotions suddenly stir inside of him. Soon, and he had no idea why, he started to laugh along with you. You paused and took in his image, the feelings in your own heart becoming more evident.
“....here I was thinking you hated my guts...” you murmured softly, shaking your head, but then instantly regretting it. “But, I already took some medicine not too long ago.” You paused again, but this time more seriously. Despite the painful state you were currently in, you still couldn’t ignore the gut feeling in your stomach.
“Ikuya...you are aware right?” Ikuya was now also looking directly at you. “...aware how I feel about you...” He froze, wide-eyed and eyebrows raised. He could no longer deny the growing feeling in his heart either. He blushed and looked away,
“...I feel the same way about you too (f/n)...for a while now...”
He said it softly, but you were just able to catch the last part as your eyes were now bulging out of your sockets. He caught a glimpse of your expression before suddenly backing away, as if he had said something wrong.
“W-what is it! W-why are you looking at me like that.”
“That’s the first....first time you ever called me by my first name...”
And for a while now? Maybe you really were oblivious.
By the look on his face, he had just realized this as well, but crossed his arms anyways, avoiding eye contact.
“It is your name you know...of course I would call you by it...” Your body moved before you had time to process what you were doing, and soon your cool hands met warm, as Ikuya gently sat back down, face now red, but still avoiding your gaze. Just as you were about to say something, a familiar sensation danced it’s way back, as you squeezed your eyes shut, removing your hands from Ikuya’s to clutch onto your head.
“Here lie down...” you obeyed, bracing for the next wave of pain, only to be met with slender fingers running through your locks, massaging in place once they had found their destination. You relaxed under Ikuya’s touch, eyelids becoming heavy.
Ikuya smiled to himself, scooting closer and watching your brows slowly unknit, as you drifted off into a peaceful slumber. ~
Yes, please. More ZoLaw... How about AU ideas?
Oh, I have ton of AU ideas. Some of which I have like 11 pages of co-brainstorming, some of which I've written up summaries roughly the length of some of which are just two words: [blank] Zoro / [Blank] Law. Here's the best list I can put together while on my way to work.
Okay, Hear Me Out. A ZoLaw Fic Where....
Zoro Is Law's Marine Bodyguard....
After Corazon dies, the navy does some digging. Years later they learn about Law and insist he is in danger as Doflamingo has located him as well. A young marine, Zoro, is assigned to guard him
Law Is A Marine & Roronoa Zoro Is His Obsession...
Or Law follows in Corazon's footsteps and becomes a marine. He sort of takes Tashigi's place as Smoker's sidekick second in command. So he's there in Lougetown when the Strawhats breeze into town. and the two develope an... Intense rivalry in which Law is determined to hunt down the cocky young swordsman (mostly because he feels like a fool... Why in the world would be agree to a fight without using his devil's fruit? What kind of argument is "it's cheap" anyway? Why the hell had he been thinking?) while Zoro enjoys taunting the handsome, moody marine he kicked the ass off back in Lougetown (or totally would have if they hadn't been interrupted).
Just wait until Law follows him all the way to Dressrosa. He's been avoiding meeting The Heavenly Demon since he became a marine, so why they hell is he willing to follow this green haired pirate hunter into the devil's own home?
Zoro Hates All Doctors (Except Law) (And Also It's A College AU Because Why Not?)
Modern AU where Law is an overworked med student filling shifts at the student clinic and Zoro is a at University on a kendo scholarship, preparing for the olympics. He has a knack for getting injured (it doesn't help that his coach, Mihawk Dracula, doesn't believe in pulling punches... Or whatever the sword equivalent is). Still, he absolutely hates going to the clinic. One day Law is taking out some tension at the gym practicing with his own blade when Zoro gets badly hurt. Law rushes over to help, and since Zoro isn't really in a position to say no he has to let the young doctor help him.
After that whenever Zoro gets injured he still refuses to go to a doctor. What he does do is lurk outside the student clinic (typically with Luffy in toe to keep him company - even if your injured and tired, you can never get too bored with Luffy as your best friend) until Law gets tired of it and makes him come in so he can fix up whatever he's managed to injure this time.
The clinic receptionist - Perona - doesn't find this cute at all. Mostly because Zoro is typically sweaty and gross and the Monkey boy is just annoying. His fellow student interns Shachi and Penguin are just impressed Law has put up with him this long (they did ask if the Kendo scene attracted a lot of girls, but Law's blank stare pretty much answered that one) while Assistant Professor and Physician Marco thinks it's adorable but is kind enough to only tease Law about it occasionally (he doesn't ask about fangirls in the kendo scene since he's pretty much certain that's not Zoro's scene either way).
Of the two tenured professors who officially oversee the clinic, Dr. Crocus has never said anything to Law about the whole situation except for letting him know when Zoro is waiting outside. He does, however, sometimes bring Zoro and Luffy by snacks or something to drink and has even kept them company an few times. No need for the two of them to wait out there with no one looking out for them (and, yes, they clearly need someone looking out for them). On the other hand Dr. Kureha has never believed in cuddling her students. The exact opposite actually. She started by telling Law he'd best take his pet home since he couldn't have it here all day ("Pet? What pet? Whoever it is, it's not mine, Dr. Kureha-ya." / "So that green haired stray and his little monkey friend don't belong to you?" / "Green hai- Urg."), Which eventually evolved to her telling him this was a clinic not a dating service ("He's not... *Sigh*") and finally came to the point where she just snips st Law for not being able to control even a simple minded athlete then how does he plan to deal with actual problem patients? She's also made a point of telling Zoro off - it pretty obvious that even when he does come by the clinic he only does so after either accumulating multiple injuries or continuing to push one until it gets far worse than needed. Is the boy an idiot? Why wait until things are so bad, and why is he wasting the time of one of her top students? If he wants to stalk one of the postgrads he could at least pick a less talented one. There are plenty to choose from.
Marco tried to make up for this lecture (after which Zoro stayed away for three months until he almost lost an eye) by offering to let Zoro and Luffy wait in the actual clinic to wait. (To which Luffy helpfully announces, "Zoro isn't waiting for the clinic, he's waiting for Toroa." Which kinda makes Zoro want to strangle his best friend but since he's currently holding a towel up to his eye and feels pretty sick at the thought of not making these games because he's an idiot, he only managed an apologetic smile and mentally promises himself to pinch Luffy later. Marco is totally unsurprised by this answer, for what it's worth.)
(Also, it turns out Kendo does attract at least a couple of girls, at least at the Olympics level. It's probably more accurate to say that Dracule Mihawk and Roronoa Zoro attract attention, which Law only learns because he was heading home after his shift and saw a bit if activity around the gymnasium and wandered over purely out of curiosity and somehow accidentally ended up watching Zoro's match. And that randomly happened a couple of times. Look, the best parking is by the gym he practically has to walk by to get to his car. He isn't going out of his way. And he has a valid reason to be interested in kendo. (Also, appro of nothing, Tashigi seems like an annoying know it all and Hiyori seems like a silly teenage girl and why is Perona even here?)
Shanks Uses His Yonko Status For It's Highest Purpose - Mischief
While sailing to Wano, they stop at an island to gather supplies when they are ambushed. It turns out to be one occupied by the Head Haired Pirates. Before anyone can attcak, Shanks steps into view, smiling. He greets Kin'emon and Kunjuro (they were with the Roger pirates for a while). Robin, Franky and Usopp he recognizes as friends of Luffy. Weirdly, he calls Zoro 'Mihawk'ss boy'. Law corrects him as Zoro is also in the Strawhats. Shanks laughs because while that may be true, he's met Zoro and he's Mihawk's boy to him. Law seems unhappy with this description, while Zoro just rolls his eyes, calling Shanks an old pervert and to stop messing around. Despite everyone else freaking out, Shanks laughs it off. He insists surely Mihawk would be the pervert in that situation. Law dislikes the whole conversation. It only gets worse when it turns out they have to stay on the island two weeks, and Mihawk is visiting as well. Under Shank's bad influence (and seeing how such comments got under the other Captain's skin even if he wouldn't admit to it) he convinced Mihawk to join him in creating some mischief (Shanks is a terrible influence).
Law Is Working For Doflamingo, Gathering Information On & Chain Off Rookie Pirates
Instead of Bellemy, the crew find Law right before Skypea. He is also (secretly) working for Doflamingo. Typically it's his job to narrow out the herd, and for the pirates that might make it to the second half of the Grand Line, his job is to gather information that may be useful in "convincing" them over to Doflamingo's side later or else can be useful in eliminating them if they become a threat.
Unlike Bellamy, it takes Law only one conversation in the bar to determine that the Strawhats aren't your average pirates. Their captain's open, naive nature makes gathering information on them rather straight forward. Which is how Law determines that his biggest advantage is his crews loyalty, and none seem more so than his handsome swordsman. Luffy seems to naturally open and unashamed to be able to gather blackmail material on, but Law's willing to bet if you own Zoro, you'd more or less own the captain. So he sets out to do just that.
Swords Are Cats
Zoro owns three infamous crazy cats. Law is a vet. Look, this is an AU in which Swords are cats. Zoro has two in particular that no vet is willing (or able) to get anywhere near. When Wado gets sick, though, he shows up to The Heart Veterinary Clinic (it sounds like such a cheesy name he already can't stand it) with all three in toe. Best to get everything done at once since it's unlikely they'll ever be allowed back again. Sure enough, Shisui just has to start the trip off by escaping when Zoro is checking in.
Law is in his office when he notices Kikoku is gone, which is strange. She usually likes to stick by his side. He goes looking for her and is surprised to find her hiding under the receptionist desk, curled up peacefully with another cat. He holds up the strange tomcat only to very nearly lose an eye. Zoro catches the poor thing midair when Law stumbles back from surprise, honestly just thankful to find him before he caused any damage.
Law takes one look at Zoro and the three cats and instantly knows two things:
A. Oh, so these are the demon cats he was warned about by Tashigi and Pica and Wanda and even Shanks who seems like he can put up with almost any animal
B. He's definitely going to get these cats to like him, if only to ensure that Zoro back.
Law Ends Up On Kuraigana Island
Incredibly simple What If premise. What if instead of fighying two pacsifistas alongside the Kid pirates, the Heart Pirates wind up on the battle field with the Strawhats. When the real Kuma shoes up, Law gets a little too close to the action and is sent along with Zoro to Kuraigana Island. This has everything you need in an AU. Zoro and Law going from complete strangers to friendly rivalry to sexual tension because they're stuck on an island for two years together. A possible love triangle with Mihawk. Perona being either an annoying bratty sister to Zoro (who in fairness beat up her crew) while openlh crushing on a disinterested Law or a Perona silently shipping the two of them long before they even take any real notice of each other (I'm guessing she'd talk about it with her hallows). Bonus points for scenes of The Heart Pirates trying desperately to find their beloved captain.
I'm kidding. Bonus points for adding Mihawk in the mix and making it a triangle filled with possessiveness, jealousy and a totally unaware he's in the middle of it all Zoro. That's my jam.
They Were Childhood Friends (Who Haven't Seen Each Other In Years)
Sometimes, all an AU needs to be is a romamtic comedy formula lifted wholesale and recontextualized to fit whatever fandom you're into. So, yeah. Law and Zoro grow up at the same dojo but haven't seen each other in years, then suddenly Law is sitting there in ten Sabaody auction house when the something crashes through the roof, and that something looks a lot like a boy he hasn't seen since he left the dojo at 18. Or, hey, maybe Law catches a wanted poster of "his little brother" while sailing on the Grand Line and decides to track him down just to see how he's doing. And probably he was totally unaware that at 13/14 years old, Zoro had just about the biggest crush in the world on him.
Although most the Strawhats definitely know. Or at least figure it out damn quickly. It's kind of hard to miss how their badass swordsman suddenly can't make eye contact or flushes at the slightest provocation. ("Do you think the Heart captain realizes?"/"Maybe it's just because Zoro looked up to him. I mean, I can't imagine him actually LIKING someone."/"Oh, come off it, you'd have to be blind not to see!"/"I think it's sweet that our swordsman-san still holds such a place for what must have been his first major crush."/"Yeah, who know Zoro-bro could be such a romantic!")
Strawhats antics ensue.
Law Uses His Shichibukai Connections For Something Other Than Revenge (So Sex. Sex and Revange.)
After becoming a Shichibukai, Law meets Mihawk at an official summon and picks up on the fact that Zoro is training there. Having promised Luffy he would look it to his nakama's safety should be discover them (something he had thought would never happen) he follows Mihawk back to the island to see how Zoro's training holds up.
Perona Is Zoro's Older Sister, Just To Create Drama
AU where Perona is Zoro's older sister. She hangs out with a much darker, edgier crowd than Zoro approves of. He find Law especially questionable and not just because they seem to have a 'thing' (in my mind Zoro is in high school while Perona and Law are not in college. He's heard about the way college boys often are and he doesn't really understand that all their relationship is entirely casual, and most the time when he catches Perona cuddling up to him, it's just her being cutesy (and because she knows that while it annoys Law a little, he won't do anything to stop him). He also doesn't understand why every time he tries to confront Law about it he ends up feeling so flustered. (Not that Law is about to openly hit on his friend's little brother, but some teasing never hurt)
There's Only One Bed. Because There Is ALWAYS A Story With Only One Bed
The Polar Tang and Sunny are stolen while the two crews are meeting up, talking over a plan to take down Blackbeard (okay fine, LAW is doing all the planning). Luckily, Shanks just happens to be passing by and offers them a lift, but as big as his ship is, three whole crews take up a lot of space. And despite Shanks (joking) offer to let Zoro share his bed, Law is the one who ends up stuffed into a single hammock with the Swordsman.
Law Tries To Sleep With His Uncle's Partner (Not As Terrible As If Sounds)
Law's uncle Corazon works in Law enforcement. He talks endlessly about his new rookie partner to the point of Law's annoyance. Until Corazon brings the young green haired detective home for dinner.
Law Is The Ship Doctor For The Strawhats Pirates
Corazon lives and runs off with Law, who grows up to be a doctor. One day, a pirate ships sails to their island. They have a sick crew member and desperate for help. Law doesn't help pirates, but then the corrupt ruler of their island has Corazon arrested and locked up, claiming he's found his true identity and plans to sell him out to his brother. They come for Law, but the Strawhats save him despite his refusal to help them (Luffy doesn't mind, he's sure Torao has his reasons and anyway Corazon is an amazing man who gave them a free lunch and he's sure Torao is just as good.) The Strawhats rescue Corazon, kick out the evil ruler and bring peace back to the island. Law finds himself compelled to accompany them.
Law Tutors Zoro (In The Ways Of Love Math)
Zoro's life is way too stressful. Between kendo competitions, a job that doesn't pay enough, a second job that's a bit questionable not too mention school. He doesn't even care about most that stuff, but if he wants to be the greatest at his sport, the rest is sort of necessary. Like training. One thing he definitely needs more training in is school work. Zoro has to keep a certain GPA to keep his Kendo scholarship. Luffy insists he knows the perfect tutor, and while Zoro isn't so sure about Luffy's judgement on intelligence, he trusts his friend. Enter Trafalgar Law, college senior who tutors on the side. Oh, and - as he casually mentions at the end of their first session that he's seen Zoro at his job. No, not as at the restaurant, but the online videos. And he has to say, he's quite the fan.
There are a few I didn't manage to get to tonight, despite being some of my favorites. Maybe later, when work has not drained the life out of me, you can hear about...
Anything with fem!Ichigo and Kisuke? Maybe a both-living-in-soul-society as Shiba Ichgio and Captain Urahara? Maybe an Outsider POV type thing? People trying to make sense of their relationship? (Btw I love your writing so much omg🤗)
Fem!Ichigo again lol. I didn’t think that would be such a popular trope tbh.
Edit: OMG THIS GOT SO LONG FML. Apparently i like fem!Ichigo just as much as you guys lmao.
1. Ichigo makes captain around the same time Kisuke does. Isshin went MIA, presumed dead (no, he’s probably run off with another woman who fell prey to one of Aizen’s experiments), so the Tenth Division captain seat is empty. Ichigo doesn’t know Kisuke well, but she likes to think she does know a bit more than the average person on the street. She knows what everyone knows of course - former Third Seat of the Second, Yoruichi’s left hand, her best interrogator - but she’s also seen him around the Shiba compound on occasion when Yoruichi drags him along, and sometimes Yoruichi talks about him. Ichigo always listens raptly, and she’s never forgotten any of the tidbits Yoruichi casually brings up when she tells Ichigo stories about the missions she can talk about or her old days at the Academy or general life as a Shihouin. Ichigo’s pretty sure Kisuke doesn’t know anything about her beyond the fact that she’s a Shiba, and he definitely doesn’t know that she admires him. She knows he’s clever and strong, devoted to Yoruichi and not someone anybody with half a brain cell would want as an enemy. She knows that he considers himself a scientist as much as an assassin, and that his morals are… flexible, at best, but that what drives his actions - outside of work - is curiosity more than any kind of deliberate malevolence or innate depravity. Ichigo knows all this, and her gaze always strays to him the handful of times they happen to be in the same vicinity. She’s pretty sure he doesn’t notice; he sticks close to Yoruichi most of the time and doesn’t really interact with anyone else, and for a while, compared to him, she’s just a girl, albeit one with a ridiculous amount of reiatsu and a bright future in the Gotei. And for all that Ichigo is a Shiba, she understands discretion better than most of her family. Perks of being trained by Yoruichi. Sometimes, she thinks about approaching Kisuke and striking up a conversation, but he always seems so closed off, or he stumbles around like a fool with two left feet but eavesdrops on conversations with the effortless ease of long habit, and for the longest time, Ichigo simply doesn’t feel like she has any right to talk to someone so obviously better than her in skill. Yoruichi is different, Shunsui and Jyuushirou and Shinji are all different, because they’re her mentors and extended family first and foremost, but Kisuke isn’t any of that so Ichigo watches him, measures herself against him, and sets her sights on one day becoming his equal.
So, they’ve never spoken, not beyond polite greetings, not until Ichigo tears through the Academy in a year and climbs the ranks like she has wings, not until Ichigo is offered a captaincy with the support of half the Gotei’s division commanders, and as the two newest and youngest captains, the two of them naturally gravitate together whenever Yamamoto summons them all for the regular less formal bi-monthly captain meetings.
Meetings follow a pattern. Captains report in, the usual topics regarding missions and internal affairs are discussed, and then they’re free to mingle, which isn’t required but it is expected in order to keep up at least some friendly relations between the squads. And it isn’t as if either Ichigo or Kisuke aren’t familiar with some of the other captains. Ichigo grew up with Shunsui and Jyuushirou as her uncle figures, and Shinji and Yoruichi are family friends, while Kisuke owes most of everything he is now to Yoruichi. But the former three are older, and Ichigo is a captain now and she doesn’t want to be treated like the little girl they used to give piggyback rides and candy to. Besides, they’re busy enough chatting with each other, and it would be awkward for even Ichigo to cut in. As for Kisuke, he hasn’t had a real conversation with Yoruichi since she signed him up for the captain exams and forced him out of the Second. Things are stiff between them when they do speak, and he doesn’t resent her exactly but sometimes he sees her walking around with Sui-Feng following in her shadow the way he used to, and it makes him turn away.
So they both retreat into corners of the room, and after a few meetings, it eventually happens to be the same corner too. Kisuke’s brought along one of his portable experimental mannequins to fiddle with to pass the time until it’s okay for him to leave, and Ichigo’s reiatsu leaps lightly between her hands as she idly twists a Kidou spell into something new, twining the purple light of a Haien with the shadows of her own spiritual energy. She doesn’t look up, but she can sense eyes on her, and it isn’t long after that before Kisuke remarks, “The Shiba Clan is formidable indeed. I don’t think even the Kidou Corps has such a knack for… improvisation.”
Ichigo glances up to meet curious grey eyes just a bit too sharp to pass for guileless, and she’s never been shy about what she wants, so she grins a little and wiggles her fingers, making the spell flare a bit. “The Twelfth Division’s coming out with pretty interesting things too.” Just last month, a training mannequin that can produce low-level bakudou to counter hadou fired at it had been presented at a captain’s meeting. The First Division got first dibs, and Ichigo’s pretty sure Yoruichi pulled some strings and wheedled her childhood friend for the favour so Second got them too, but the Tenth will probably have to wait at least another six months. Ichigo’s not known for her patience though when there’s no real need for it, so she suggests impishly, “I’ll show you mine if you show me yours.”
Kisuke arches an eyebrow, and some of the clueless facade he likes to wear falls away, replaced by an amused smirk. “You drive a tempting bargain, Shiba-taichou. However can I refuse?”
Half an hour later, Ichigo crosses the wrong two wires and Kisuke puts just a little too much reiatsu into a half-melted Soukatsui. The wall behind them blows up, and in the ensuing chaos and uproar, under the cover of all the smoke, the two of them sneak away over the rooftops like naughty children, half falling over with laughter.
Later, when Yamamoto eyeballs them and demands to know if they had anything to do with the explosion, they serve as each other’s alibi, swearing innocence up and down. Everybody knows they’re lying but no one can prove it, and as Yamamoto dismisses them with a long-suffering sigh, all of Seireitei seems to feel a sense of foreboding as Ichigo and Kisuke walk out together.
2. Kisuke finds an unexpected friend in the Tenth Division captain, and as a result, he has less time to hole himself up in his labs. At first, it isn’t even that he doesn’t want to; it’s just that it’s very hard to say no to Shiba Ichigo, who invites herself over to the Twelfth like she’s been given blanket permission and drags Kisuke out of the SRDI like it’s her right. Before Kisuke knows it, he’s spending most of his lunch breaks with her, and he even starts getting his paperwork finished on time every Friday because Ichigo has a habit of hauling him back to the Shiba compound for dinner on those evenings.
Kisuke’s always had a hard time saying no to strong-willed women, but still, Ichigo is different from Yoruichi. There wasn’t anything Kisuke wouldn’t have done for Yoruichi, up to and including changing his life’s career path when she announced he would. She was as much his closest friend as she was the noble clan heir who saved him from Rukongai, from starvation and certain death, and neither of them will ever forget that.
But Ichigo is different. Ichigo is colleague and peer and friend with no strings attached, and Kisuke’s never had that before in his life. She takes liberties with him that he could stop if he really wanted to, but she’s interested in his inventions in a way no one else is, and she’s eager to teach him her family’s brand of kidou in return even though he’s pretty sure she’s not supposed to. He asks about it once, and she only shrugs.
“Kuukaku-nee-san considers Yoruichi-nee-san another sister,” She tells him carelessly. “And you’re Yoruichi-nee-san’s best friend. I’m sure you know several Shiba secrets already even if you didn’t used to come over as often as Yoruichi-nee-san. Plus you’re not the type to go spreading around what you know, are you? Otherwise I don’t think Yoruichi-nee-san would’ve ever started bringing you over to our compound in the first place. Besides, I don’t teach you the really secret stuff. You need actual Shiba blood for that, so I can’t anyway. It’s fine.”
And Kisuke would think she’s simply too trusting, too naive, unable to keep her mouth shut, except as far as he knows, she doesn’t teach anybody else the way she does Kisuke, doesn’t spend half as much time these days with anyone except him. She trains her squad, spars with them and extends her favour over the potential recruits she’s handpicked from the upcoming Academy graduates and of course always makes time for her family. But even Kisuke - who admittedly has always been terrible with people - can tell that somehow, sometime when he wasn’t looking, Shiba Ichigo had decided to make Kisuke her best friend.
He… doesn’t mind it. The company is surprisingly welcome, and he didn’t even know he was lonely until he suddenly had Ichigo hiding in his labs from her own paperwork or barging into his office to bring him lunch. He used to have Yoruichi to talk to, but nowadays, he has Hiyori screaming at him every time he turns around, or Kurotsuchi constantly testing his patience, or his other squad members shying away from him because he doesn’t know how to handle them, how to lead them, how to make them like him.
Ichigo doesn’t seem to see any of his deficiencies though, or maybe she does and just… takes it in stride. She doesn’t mind when he gets an idea halfway through a conversation and has to write it down and ends up tuning out everything for the next three hours, and she only interrupts him to remind him of his other duties and to grab dinner on his way home. She spars with him willingly, even eagerly, and the more underhanded fighting style he prefers just makes her grin wider, a bloodlust that matches his own surging to the fore the longer they fight. He wins, more often than not, but her ability to adapt, the way she incorporates everything from new Kidou spells to fighting sequences that she’s only seen once into her own style, her limitless potential in the way she seems to grow stronger with every damn blow, is terrifying, and Kisuke absolutely knows that one day, probably soon, she will surpass him, and it will be glorious to witness.
Inadvertently, Ichigo humanizes him too. She becomes a regular fixture at the Twelfth, and it helps that their respective compounds are back to back so they can just shunpo over the back walls whenever they please, and it isn’t long before the Shinigami under their command follow their lead. Kisuke’s officers - from seated to unseated, science-inclined or otherwise - relax over time, more and more every time Ichigo breezes through the courtyard or asks Kisuke to introduce her to some of them. They always seem surprised that he knows anything about them, and he’s not sure why - he’s read all their files, and it isn’t as if he can’t see the training yard from his office. Ichigo does the same for him, introducing him around her own squad, and it isn’t long before their officers begin taking missions together more often than not, and mingling together in their own time as if their compounds are one. The day a rebel faction of rogue Shinigami rolls through and kidnaps the heir of a noble house, Kisuke and Ichigo are onsite first, and by the time backup arrives, the heir has been saved, and all that’s left are the lingering red and black flickers of their respective reiatsu and the not-so-subtle trail of destruction left in the wake of their rather one-sided confrontation.
At the end of the next meeting, Yamamoto spares a minute to inform him and Ichigo that since their squads are so close, all joint missions relating to research and exploration into Hueco Mundo would be handed down to them from that point on, and it would be their job to train up and round out their mission teams properly with Shinigami from both divisions. Kisuke stares at Ichigo’s equally wide eyes and wonders when they became the next Kyouraku and Ukitake.
3. The first time Ichigo is frantically trying to meet a deadline and has to stay late into the night, Kisuke drops by with her favourite udon and a side of sushi, plus his own portion from the same restaurant, and doesn’t even seem to think he has to ask for permission before sitting down and poking fun at her time management skills and breaking out the chopsticks. Ichigo stares at him, not long enough for him to notice, but she also has to pretend to drop a scroll under her desk for a moment just so she can wrestle the manically thrilled smile off her face out of his line of sight.
Her evil plan is working.
The trick to befriending Kisuke, she’s found, is persistence. It probably helps that she likes him so much, and she’s genuinely interested in the inventions his brilliant and slightly insane mind comes up with, but more than anything else, persistence is key. When he’s neck-deep in research, she knows better than to interrupt his thought process unless she absolutely has to, and she’s fairly certain she’s never overstayed her welcome to the point of irritating him. But she keeps going back, bringing him food, teaching him her specialized kidou, and listening to him talk, and it’s been almost five years now and she doesn’t think it’s only wishful thinking anymore that Kisuke considers her a friend.
And that. That’s enough. Anything more will come if it comes. Hell, she doesn’t even know if he’s interested in people in a romantic or even sexual sense; he’s certainly never so much as gone on a date with anyone after becoming captain - Ichigo would know - and she’s never seen him visit a whorehouse. Sometimes, she does look in the mirror and wonder if Kisuke thinks she’s pretty (then she tries to drown herself in the shower because ugh what a dumb thing to fret over, like a lovesick little girl). On occasion, she wonders if she should try to act more like Yoruichi - all effortless elegance and lethal grace and refined speech when she wants, with something independent and whimsical that reminds Ichigo of a tiger in the wild - because if Kisuke has ever loved anyone, it would be her. But pretending to be something Ichigo isn’t has never been her strong suit, and she’ll never be able to be the kind of sophisticated upper-class that most nobles have known since birth anyway. Besides, it doesn’t count if Kisuke doesn’t like her for her.
Friends though. Ichigo can do friends, and these days, Kisuke no longer stares past her the way he used to back when she was still growing up. Anything more will come if it comes, and Ichigo can be content with that, even if some part of her continues to hope.
“Ichigo?”
Ichigo blinks to find Kisuke watching her with questioning eyes, the udon half held out towards her. “Are you alright?”
Ichigo gives herself a mental shake. “Yeah, I’m fine, just trying to remember if I signed one of the reports I sent off earlier. Pretty sure I did, thank fuck.” Her hands shoot out demandingly. “Now gimme, I’m starving!”
Kisuke rolls his eyes even as a fondly amused smile tugs at his lips. He hands over the udon and shakes his head as Ichigo digs in ravenously. “And you scold me for skipping meals.”
“You sh’p way ’ore ’an ’e!” Ichigo immediately protests around a mouthful of noodles.
“What’s that?” Kisuke mocks cheerfully. “‘You are absolutely correct Kisuke and I shouldn’t throw stones at glass houses?’ I completely agree.”
Ichigo sends him a dirty look because that doesn’t even rhyme, but she’s too hungry to keep arguing. Kisuke only smirks back at her before starting on his own dinner, and for a while, they sit in companionable silence as they work through their food.
Ichigo sits back with a satisfied sigh when she finishes. “That was delicious. It almost makes the all-nighter I’ll have to pull not so bad.”
Kisuke leans over to pour some more tea for himself but he casts a curious look over at her as well. “Leaving your paperwork to the last minute is usually my bad habit.” Ichigo snorts, and Kisuke sends her an exasperated look. “What in the world distracted you enough that you put it off this late?”
Ichigo makes a face and slouches further into her seat. “It’s my birthday in three months.” Kisuke makes that faint forehead crease that means he’s confused, so Ichigo explains sullenly, “It’s my big one hundred. Apparently that’s an important age or something so Kuukaku-nee-san’s been dragging me out for dress fittings for two weeks now, Ganju-nii-san keeps asking for my opinion even though he’s thrown out like four menu plans already because they’re apparently not good enough, and Kaien-nii-san won’t shut up about if I’m sure I don’t want to invite this or that person. It’s so annoying.” She pauses when an odd expression flits across Kisuke’s features. “What?”
Kisuke blinks before shaking his head. “Nothing. Just…” He smiles, and it’s one of his false ones. Ichigo automatically scowls, and Kisuke drops it. “I just didn’t realize you hadn’t reached your hundredth birthday yet.”
Ichigo bristles. “Is that a problem or something? I’m not a kid anymore if that’s what you’re hung up on.”
Kisuke quickly shakes his head again. “No that’s not it. You’re a Shinigami captain, and you’re more responsible than I am most of the time, Ichigo, both our squads can attest to that.”
Ichigo scowls some more but lets her shoulders drop. “What then?”
Kisuke glances down at his tea before tipping a rueful smile at her, this one real and slightly crooked. “I suppose I just wondered why you would want to spend all your time with an old man like me.”
Ichigo stares at him for a long beat of silent disbelief before rolling her eyes hard enough to feel something in her skull twinge. “Oh my god, you’re not that old, you’re not even four hundred yet. Kaien-nii is just past his four-hundred-thirtieth, and he’d throw down if anybody told him his next stop’s a rocking chair on the back porch.”
Kisuke huffs a laugh, brief and soft and startled every time when it’s real, like he has to hide it and like he never expects it, and Ichigo has to bite back an instinctive smile in response.
“True,” Kisuke muses, and the uncertainty from before is gone. He raises an expectant eyebrow instead, and Ichigo beams upon hearing his next question, “Well it is important so I can understand the fuss. You’re not keeping me off the invite list though, are you? I wouldn’t want to miss your big day.”
“Of course not!” Ichigo says brightly. “Invitations will be sent out this weekend so you’ll get yours real soon.” She slants a sly glance at him. “You’ll get me the best present, right?”
Kisuke makes that half-stifled more-breath-than-sound laugh again. “Did you have something you want in mind?”
Ichigo considers that for a moment. “Mmmm… make me something.”
Kisuke cocks his head, and some of his hair falls over his eyes. He brushes it back and Ichigo wonders what he’d look like with it tied back, or what it would feel like if she was allowed to run fingers through it. “Make you something?”
Ichigo nods. “Something that will surprise me.” She grins. “I hear you’re good at that.”
Kisuke hums, and he doesn’t promise her a new invention, but he does lean back in his seat, his eyes going distant, and Ichigo can practically see the new ideas form in his mind. She suppresses a laugh of her own and gets up instead to clear away their empty food cartons before getting back to work. She’s not surprised when he pulls out a notebook a few minutes later, and for the rest of the night, only the scratch of pen on paper breaks the hush between them.
Three months later, Kisuke enters the Shiba compound dressed in his finest clothes. He feels awkward in them but he can’t exactly wear his uniform to this event, even if he’s fairly sure Ichigo won’t care. He drops off his gift at the table already piled high with them, and then a servant leads him to his seat, near the front where the guest of honour and her relatives will sit, and he isn’t surprised when Yoruichi drops down beside him a moment later.
Neither of them speaks. Kisuke glances over, checks automatically for Sui-Feng before remembering she probably hasn’t been invited, and then realizes he feels… nothing. Not the hot sting of jealousy, nor the twist of hurt at knowing he’d been cast aside. Instead, his mind wanders and he finds himself wondering if Yoruichi - who has a good eye for kimonos - had a hand in dressing Ichigo up, and then he wonders - with more than a little amusement - how big a tantrum Ichigo probably threw at being stuffed into something probably as uncomfortable as his own current attire. She doesn’t even like wearing her captain’s haori when she can help it. Kisuke should know - he’s the one forced to hold it for her on the streets just in case they happen to pass a captain who would care and she has to throw it back on in a pinch.
He blinks and meets Yoruichi’s gaze again, gold and and knowing and forever unapologetic, and he inclines his head in return. Neither of them speaks, but he supposes, when it matters, they’ve never really had to.
It’s another half-hour before the last of the guests arrive, and then the Shibas enter. Ichigo is last, and as soon as Kisuke sees her, he can’t look away.
Blue is the Shibas’ colour, just as gold is the Shihouins’, and white is the Kuchikis’. Ichigo enters, dressed in a shimmering dark blue kimono patterned with bursts of fireworks. In contrast, her orange hair stands out that much more against it, pinned back with glittering kanzashi but left free to tumble down her back like a river of fire. Her brown eyes are bright, her cheeks blushed a delicate pink. She sweeps in like a force of nature barely contained, every inch a lady of noble birth, and against the backdrop of the night sky behind her, she is radiant.
Oh, something in Kisuke thinks in a daze, and beside him, he hears Yoruichi sigh, fond and exasperated in turn, but Kisuke doesn’t look at her because Ichigo catches his eye in the next moment and smiles, warm and glowing, and Kisuke can do nothing but stare back, utterly mesmerized.
Hours later, after the toasts and the seven-course dinner and even more toasts, everyone is free to mingle. Kisuke automatically sinks back into some nearby shadows, and for a while he gets some time to himself because Ichigo is busy thanking everyone for coming and making the appropriate amount of small talk. It still feels like no time at all when she appears in a burst of colour in front of him, flushed with a few drinks, breaking into another smile when she sees him.
She’s always so happy to see him, and Kisuke thinks he’s missed a few things over the past several years of their friendship.
“Kisuke!” She exclaims, and he realizes she’s clutching his gift, already half-unwrapped, in her hands. “These are fantastic, thank you!”
They’re a pair of hairpins, in her family’s colour, polished to perfection but purposely dulled so it won’t catch light in the dark, with jeweled heliotropes set along them. They’re not anything fancy, but they’re also not normal. Kisuke made them sharp enough to kill obviously, but the heliotropes themselves hide the real centerpiece. He blew up thirty-nine sets before he finally managed to get it right - a linked portal seal between the two, so that in an emergency, so long as Ichigo leaves one in a safe place and keeps the other on her, all she would need to do is send a spark of her own reiatsu into one set of flowers and it would teleport her straight to the other hairpin. Nothing - not an average bakudou, not one of the forbidden Kidou spells, not even different dimensions - would be able to prevent her from being transported to safety. The hairpins are designed to tear through literally anything in its way, and they’re probably one of Kisuke’s greatest achievements to date. It’s the only one of its kind, and as soon as Ichigo touched them, her passive reiryoku came into contact with them, and they now respond only to her.
He wrote down the explanation of course, Kidou-locked for her eyes only, and Ichigo beams at him now, clearly delighted.
“Here, help me put it on,” She says, already yanking out her kanzashi.
Kisuke can practically see Kuukaku’s wrath manifest a physical form from across the courtyard, and he pointedly pretends not to notice. Instead, he sighs rather helplessly even as something thrills inside him, possessive and smug. He firmly ignores it, focusing on tucking back the stray orange strands of Ichigo’s hair before clipping one of the hairpins through. They’re terribly lacking compared to her kanzashi but Ichigo doesn’t seem to care.
“The other one?” Kisuke asks, glancing down, only to blink when Ichigo catches one of his hands and presses the second hairpin into his palm.
Kisuke looks up. Ichigo smiles back, quiet and steady and resolute even as she withdraws her own hands again and takes a step back.
“Keep it safe for me, okay?” She asks, and Kisuke can’t find any words for a moment. But Ichigo doesn’t seem to need an answer, one hand rising to brush over the hairpin instead before swirling around in a neat spin. “How do I look? You haven’t said yet.”
Kisuke… doesn’t really plan on saying it. Somehow, entirely unlike him, it slips out anyway.
“Beautiful,” He says, voice just a touch too hoarse. “You look beautiful.”
Ichigo’s eyes go wide. And Kisuke can’t possibly have been the only one to say it, because she shines like a phoenix tonight, and it’s not even a particularly creative compliment; she’s almost certainly heard better. But she seems so very surprised anyway, and then she blushes to the tips of her ears, floundering for words in a way that isn’t at all like her.
“Thanks,” She finally mumbles, ducking her head for a moment before straightening just as quickly, something like defiance and challenge squaring her shoulders as she studies him searchingly for all of two seconds before reaching out and catching his arm. “Come on, the fireworks will start soon. We should get a good spot. The roof on the eastern side is best.”
She drags him off, and Kisuke goes willingly. Later, they sit shoulder to shoulder with the crackle of multi-coloured fireworks exploding overhead. Ichigo smiles  up at the sky, and Kisuke watches her out of the corner of his eye, recalling all their moments together over the past five years, wondering if she really has felt… more for him than he’s ever realized.
She’s a Shiba though. Half the noble guests here tonight brought along their sons and nephews for no other reason than because Ichigo will have to marry well one day. If this were a race, Kisuke knows he has already lost. But, they’re friends. Ichigo is actually probably his only friend, Yoruichi aside, and that will have to be good enough. Ichigo isn’t the type to cast anyone aside even after she marries, which won’t be for a while yet anyway, and if nothing else, the Shibas won’t ever wed her off to someone who would dictate who she can see and what she can do. So Kisuke will get to keep her friendship, and so long as he has that, then he can be content.
4. In this world, Kisuke does not create the Hougyoku. Oh, he stumbles on the idea, even starts on the project, but when it becomes clear that he’s going to have to more or less dissect the souls of dozens if not hundreds of souls, Pluses and Hollows alike, because he isn’t going to figure this out without seeing what happens, Kisuke thinks of Ichigo, thinks of what she would think if she knew, and… he stops.
He wants to know. He always wants to know, anything and everything he doesn’t already. But this, this is what Ichigo would consider cruel, this is wrong, and Kisuke’s curiosity over the outcome of this little experiment isn’t worth Ichigo’s disappointment.
So he sighs and mentally shelves this line of research, at least until he can figure out a better way to do it, and then he scraps the project. There are plenty of other areas he can turn his mind to after all. Besides-
“Kisuke!” Ichigo bursts into his personal labs, dragging a disheveled-looking Akon behind her. “I sent your Third Seat to the Fourth!”
Kisuke sighs. “What did he do now?”
She scowls at him and hauls Akon up front and center. Ichigo’s on the tall side, only a few inches shorter than Kisuke, so even standing straight, Akon only reaches her chest-height.
“He tried to experiment on Akon!” She snaps, and Kisuke frowns, because he’s pretty sure this would be the seventh time Kurotsuchi’s tried to overstep the boundaries Kisuke set. It isn’t as if he even has that many, and surely don’t experiment on your fellow squad members isn’t too difficult to remember?
He sighs again and glances down at Akon, who looks slightly flustered under Ichigo’s fussing. Kisuke arches an amused eyebrow, and Akon glowers at him.
Brat.
Still, Ichigo’s taken a liking to Akon, and aside from time in the labs, the kid usually haunts the Tenth more than the Twelfth these days.
“How about the Academy?” Kisuke suggests abruptly, and Ichigo blinks at him. “He isn’t cleared for missions or anywhere other than the SRDI since he hasn’t passed the Shinigami requirements at the school, but if he goes, and graduates, I’ll be able to transfer him over to the Tenth.” He looks at Akon again. “You like it better over there anyway, don’t you? But of course, you’ll still have lab space here.”
Akon looks openly astonished for a split second, then wheels around to stare up at Ichigo. “Shiba-taichou-?”
Ichigo grins and ruffles his hair. “If it’s what you want, that’s fine by me! My family can even put in a recommendation, and don’t you worry about books and supplies. The next entrance exam is coming up too so this is perfect timing!”
She begins ushering him out the door again, Akon hanging on to her every word, but she pauses and glances back just before she leaves.
Kisuke inclines his head. “I’ll take care of it.” He considers that for a moment before adding, “Permanently.”
Ichigo nods briskly, her smile going grim and dark for a split second, and then she turns her attention back to Akon as they continue on their way.
Kisuke listens to their voices fade, absently tapping the flat of his Zanpakutou against his thigh.
Well, he supposes Kurotsuchi was never going to work out anyway. The man’s even had the audacity to make noises - albeit relatively muted ones whenever Kisuke’s around - about getting his hands on Ichigo, such an anomaly of natural-born reiatsu even for a Shiba, and Kisuke’s seen the way the other man’s eyes gleam and follow Ichigo around when she’s at the Twelfth. And that just isn’t acceptable. Of course, on one hand, Ichigo would crush him if he ever tries anything, but on the other, it’s really only a matter of time before Kurotsuchi’s greed gets the better of him, and why bother Ichigo with this issue when Kisuke can prevent it?
It’s a shame. Kurotsuchi isn’t quite at Kisuke’s level of genius, and somehow, he’s even more obsessive about his various scientific interests than Kisuke, but he would’ve helped boost the SRDI to greater heights. Kisuke draws the line at harming those under his protection though. He’s given Kurotsuchi plenty of chances to curb his more… excessive inclinations. This time will be the last time.
A week later, Kisuke makes his way out of the Maggots’ Nest, and Kurotsuchi doesn’t actually stop screaming threats at him until there’s too many walls and doors between them for Kisuke to hear him.
Yoruichi is waiting outside, one eyebrow going up when she sees him come out alone. “I thought you had high hopes for that one?”
Kisuke smiles blandly back at her. “Yes, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out.”
“Oh?”
Kisuke shrugs and turns in the direction of his division compound. “You know I don’t like it when people touch my stuff, Yoruichi-san.”
His squad is his. His people are his. Ichigo isn’t, not the way he’s slowly realizing he’d prefer. But she’s still under his protection, even if she doesn’t need it, and Kisuke would throw away a lot more than a single asset to keep her safe.
Later that same day, Ichigo brings him a cake, and Kisuke has to laugh when he sees that the icing reads, Sorry You Lost Your Best Creepy Scientist.
“I’ll find others for my department,” Kisuke assures as he bites into his first slice.
Ichigo scoffs and slaps down a stack of files. “’Course you will, and I’m gonna help. You and Kurotsuchi and Akon can’t be the only science geeks in Soul Society. So, how ’bout we write up a proposal for the old man? A separate exam for people who don’t necessarily want to become Shinigami but might be interested in a research grant or something? Maybe we can even create a new branch of the Academy, something that focuses on whatever basics you would need to apply to your department. They can still be required to take the core subjects, but if they decide they want to enter the SRDI, you can even set a curriculum for them, since you’d know best what they’d need. As for the SRDI, why not make it separate from the Gotei but still attached, like the Onmitsukidou and the Kidou Corps. Right now, I’m pretty sure most people still think of it as your side-hobby or something. But in the long run, if we do this right, I think even Central 46 would see the benefits of starting something like this.”
Kisuke just… stares at her for a minute. He looks at the plans that Ichigo has already begun drafting up, that she’s taken the time to think of Kisuke and consider what he might want and how to help him further his ambitions, and then he looks back at her again, and he promises himself then that if she ever expresses even the slightest unhappiness with whoever she ends up married to one day, he’ll carve them up into as many pieces as physically and spiritually possible because this woman deserves the world.
“That’s genius,” He says faintly, and Ichigo beams. She shoves the files at him, shuffles their cake off to the side, and then they spend the rest of the day lobbing ideas back and forth for a system Kisuke can’t wait to put into practice.
5. Five years later, the Mission happens. The Ninth Division goes to investigate the disappearances out in Rukongai, then an irritated Hiyori heads out when a researcher is requested, and then the emergency meeting is called when the entire investigation team’s reiatsu signatures disappear.
“I’ll go,” Ichigo repeats once the meeting is over and the backup team is about to head out. “Don’t worry, Kisuke, I’ll get Hiyori back alive and in one piece.”
Kisuke grimaces but nods. Hiyori might as well be Ichigo’s lieutenant as well at this point, and he knows Ichigo will do everything she can to retrieve Hiyori.
“You stay safe too,” Kisuke reminds her, gaze flicking briefly to the hairpin he’s never seen her go out without. The other remains with him, always.
Ichigo nods back determinedly, and then she leaves.
If Kisuke had known what would happen, he would’ve tied her up and sat on her to make sure she didn’t leave Seireitei that night. Or at the very least, he would’ve gone with her, orders be damned.
But in this world, in this time, he trusts Ichigo as much as he trusts himself, and if there’s even the slightest possibility of returning Hiyori and everyone else alive, he believes Ichigo will do it. So in this world, he does not go after them, fiddling listlessly with various projects in his labs instead as he waits for word of their return.
He doesn’t get word. Instead, a shriek rings high and clear in the far, far distance, and Kisuke skids outside just in time to see the blazing light of fireworks burning on the horizon like it’s set the sky on fire.
His stomach drops. Ichigo had told him about this once - a canister of specialized fireworks that serves as an SOS, carried by every Shiba, Shinigami or otherwise, released only in worst-case scenarios when reinforcements are desperately needed.
In the distance, from the direction of the Shiba compound, a muffled uproar stirs, one that’s closely followed by a commotion at the Thirteenth. Then there’s a displacement of air and Ichigo’s lieutenant is suddenly beside him. Kisuke glances over and isn’t at all surprised to see the ice in Koyonagi’s face. Ichigo’s probably the last person anyone thought would require reinforcements. That she thinks she needs it when she already has three other captains and two lieutenants with her makes the whole situation even worse.
“I’ll take a team and go,” Koyonagi says abruptly, and it isn’t a question. Unlike Hiyori, Koyonagi obeys one person and one person alone. “You stay here.” He glares, pre-empting Kisuke’s protest. “If she uses that portal seal-” Because of course if anyone would realize the significance of Ichigo suddenly wearing a hair accessory everywhere since five years ago, it would be the former Kidou Corps Commander. “-because she needs medical attention, what use would it be if you’re in the middle of Rukongai?”
He’s gone in the next second, and Kisuke has to grit his teeth and take a fortifying breath to stop himself from going after him. The urge tears at him anyway. He isn’t used to staying back, doing nothing, feeling completely useless.
He should’ve gone with her.
Hours later, in the early light of dawn with half the city a bustling hive of tense activity and both the Tenth and Twelfth Divisions on high alert, Kisuke gets only a moment’s warning, the hairpin he’s been cradling in his hands rippling with Ichigo’s familiar abyssal reiatsu before a burst of light whites out the room.
Kisuke has to take a moment to blink the spots from his sight, and then he takes all of three seconds to take in the sudden influx of bodies in his lab - Muguruma and Kuna, unconscious and locked down with so many Kidou binding spells that they look about ready for transport to prison, with Ushouda standing over them, Aikawa and Ootoribashi supporting each other but at least they’re also on their feet, Yadoumaru, her blade still drawn and  bloodied, and Hirako, hair and uniform splashed with blood but with enough strength to support Ichigo, who’s half-collapsed against the blond, a bloodstained hairpin still clutched in one white-knuckled grip.
Kisuke has eyes for no one else. “Ichigo!”
He hasn’t been idle in the past several hours, setting out everything he thought he might need just in case Ichigo really did come back in serious need of medical aid. Hirako relinquishes Ichigo to him, but Kisuke barely has time to lay her out on a padded table before she convulses, once, twice, and then she screams.
“Tie her down!” Hirako barks, and Kisuke almost slits the other captain’s throat for that as Ushouda cuffs her to the table. The Fifth Division captain gives a jerky shake of his head. “She’s been infected by- by whatever the hell Aizen was doin’. He got Kensei and Mashiro too, but they’re out for now.” He grimaces, a baring of teeth that looks equal parts angry and scared. “Aizen said somethin’ about them bein’ Hollowfied?” Kisuke’s blood runs cold. “The rest of Kensei’s team is dead, but these two ambushed us, and I don’t think they knew who we were. Ichigo managed ta set off her flare before slippin’ past them and attackin’ Aizen. The rest of us focused on subduin’ Kensei and Mashiro. And Ichimaru and Tousen were with them, on Aizen’s side. We managed ta get them too. Kaien and Koyonagi and half the Shiba Clan are on scene now. Hiyori’s fine as well and insisted on stayin’.” He looks like he wants to cringe as Ichigo thrashes futilely and screams again like someone’s carving out her insides with a rusty spoon. “Can ya do anythin’ for her?!”
Kisuke swears under his breath, hands already glowing, trying to get an actual reading on whatever the hell is happening with Ichigo’s body. His ears ring with the shrill sounds of Ichigo in obvious agony, and he has to check to make sure his hands aren’t shaking because they certainly feel like they are.
“Did he have an orb on him?” Kisuke shouts over Ichigo’s screams. “Aizen!” And he hopes the man is still alive, if only because Kisuke dearly wishes to strangle the traitor with his own spine. “About the size of a fist, blue-”
“Yeah, I have it,” Yadoumaru steps forward, yanking an eerie blue-green orb from a pocket of her Shihakushou. “Will it help reverse this?”
Kisuke has no answers for her, and he doesn’t have time either before Ichigo’s screams abruptly cut off, and Kisuke just manages to disintegrate the Kidou cuffs and turn her onto her side before she throws up a viscous white substance all over the floor.
“’isuke,” She slurs, feverish recognition surfacing for a moment once she manages to stop. “’isuke, it ’urts-”
“I know,” Kisuke murmurs, helping her drink some water. “I know, sweetheart. I’ll fix it, I promise. Can you tell me what happened when you fought Aizen?”
He gets a garbled recount of an illusion-type Zanpakutou - out of sight, Hirako kicks something over - that Ichigo managed to overcome thanks to her overwhelmingly high levels of reiatsu combined with something inside her - something new and bloodthirsty and ruthless - that had taken over her body long enough to shatter Aizen’s influence. They’d destroyed five districts in their battle but Ichigo had come out on top in the end.
She stops, choking on a cry as another wave of pain courses through her, clawing at her own skin, and her usual brown eyes flash yellow-on-black. Kisuke holds her down through it, and then he forgets himself and reaches up to cradle her face with his hands. Ichigo meets his gaze only after a dizzying moment of confusion where she doesn’t even seem to know where she is anymore, but she seems to calm too at his touch, just a bit.
“I’m going to knock you out,” Kisuke says quietly. “It’s not doing you any good to stay awake right now. But I’ll make this better, Ichigo, I promise. Trust me.”
Ichigo only manages a weak smile in response, but her eyes are steady on his, and she doesn’t so much as twitch as a spell washes over her and puts her to sleep.
Kisuke takes a step back. When he turns, everyone who’s still awake is staring, but he ignores them, directing Ushouda to put Muguruma and Kuna onto two of the other tables before holding out a hand for the orb.
The Hougyoku. To think, where even Kisuke stopped, Aizen Sousuke did not. He wonders just how many the other man has killed for this to actually work.
Out loud, he says curtly, “I need peace and quiet. You may stay, but stay out of my way. If you’re injured, go to the Fourth. I have no time for you right now.”
And then he turns and gets to work.
It takes Kisuke a week. He doesn’t sleep, barely eats, and he doesn’t leave his labs until Ichigo - and Muguruma and Kuna - is breathing easy again.
He checks Ichigo one more time, sets a monitor in case she wakes while he’s gone, spares a moment to brush fingers over the two hairpins he’d washed and set on the side table, and then he heads upstairs, makes his way out of the SRDI, and promptly walks straight into what looks like a war.
At least half his officers plus the Tenth’s are arrayed across the compound walls, bristling with weapons, patrolling like they’ve somehow become the target of a siege. Kisuke stares, double-checks to make sure he isn’t hallucinating from exhaustion, and then shunpos directly over to where he can sense Hiyori’s reiatsu signature.
“What is going on?” He asks, all out of patience, with not enough energy to waffle around the issue.
Hiyori startles, jumping half a foot, hand falling to her Zanpakutou, but she relaxes when she sees him. He’s never going to be her favourite person, but over the years, they’ve at least built a decent working relationship, especially once he started taking his position more seriously and not just focusing all his attention on establishing the SRDI.
“Gimme some warnin’!” She growls, but doesn’t react beyond that. “A week ago, Central 46 came out with an execution order for Ichigo and the other two,” She reports with a scowl, nodding emphatically when Kisuke slices a sharp glance down at her. “Guards came and tried ta storm our compound ta drag ’em out. Obviously we weren’t just gonna let them. We shut the gates, knocked out anyone who tried ta force their way in anyway, and dumped them back outside. The Fifth, Eighth, and Thirteenth even sent over help halfway inta the second day. A couple days after that, assassins started tryin’ ta sneak in.” She grins, looking positively feral. “Koyonagi stabbed the first one he caught in the face. Those ones, we returned dead.” She shook her head. “The last attack was yesterday mornin’. Word’s come down that Central 46 was influenced by Aizen’s Zanpakutou or somethin’, and since Ichigo left ’im alive, it’s still affectin’ ’em. Unohana-taichou’s been workin’ on it though. That might be why they haven’t sent anymore guards, but we’re all still keepin’ a lookout. Oh yeah, and I heard the Shiba Clan’s about one wrong word away from rebellion, and rumour has it that the Shihouin Clan’s willin’ ta follow. So for now, nobody’s doin’ anythin’ but there’s a hell of a lot of swords pointed at each other in Seireitei at the moment.”
She turns demanding eyes up at Kisuke. “Well? What about you then? Is Ichigo gonna be okay? And the other two I guess.”
“They’ll be fine,” Kisuke says even as his thoughts race. Execution? That’s extreme even for Central 46, especially when a Shiba is involved. They should know full well that attacking one of that clan is attacking the entire clan, that attacking Kaien is attacking the Eighth and Thirteenth, and that attacking Ichigo might as well be attacking half the Gotei and her whole family.
Besides, striking at even one of the Five Pillars of Soul Society is never a good idea.
“Aizen is still alive?” He asks next.
Hiyori actually smirks. “Yeah, but last I heard, he’s still in a coma. Ichigo kicked his ass pretty hard.”
Excellent. Just enough left for Kisuke to get a piece of him.
“Keep me posted,” He orders as the monitor guarding Ichigo goes off. He hesitates for a moment, then adds awkwardly, “You’re alright too though? Hirako-san told me you were, but…”
Hiyori rolls her eyes. “I’m fine. I hid pretty well as soon as I realized somethin’ was seriously wrong with that team from the Ninth. And then Ichigo crashed in with Shinji and the others. I barely got scratched, and that was just because that smiley-eyed creep Ichimaru got in a lucky hit.”
Kisuke exhales. “Good. Then just make sure you get some rest; don’t spend all your time out here. And until you have proof that Central 46 has rescinded the execution order-” He pauses a beat. “-and sent along a formal apology to the Shiba Clan, don’t stand down.”
Hiyori snorts. “I don’t need you to tell me that.”
Kisuke smiles briefly, and then shunpos away again. He gets back to his labs just in time to find Ichigo struggling to sit up.
“You shouldn’t be getting up yet,” Kisuke scolds, but he’s already at her side, one arm sliding around her back to support her.
“What day is it?” Ichigo mumbles, sagging against him once she’s more or less upright. “What’s happening?”
She obediently sips at the cup of water Kisuke holds up to her lips, and it seems to revive her a bit more, if only to let her shoot him an impatient look.
At least she’s well enough to do that.
It doesn’t take long for Kisuke to summarize the situation outside since he doesn’t know all the details himself, and then he tells her about the Hougyoku and its effects and the monster that now lives inside her soul.
Ichigo, of course, just shrugs. “Well, at least I’m alive to learn to live with it.” She glances down at herself and wrinkles her nose. “Now help me to the bathroom. I need a shower and a change of clothes. And food. In that order.” She glances at him knowingly. “We probably both do.”
Kisuke heaves a sigh, but he supposes she isn’t wrong.
“You first,” He says firmly, and without waiting for a reply, he simply scoops her up into his arms instead of levering her to her feet.
“Kisuke!” Ichigo yelps, fingers scrambling for the collar of his Shihakushou.
“You shouldn’t be up at all,” Kisuke grumbles. “But if you insist, I’ll have to carry you.”
Ichigo makes a disgruntled noise, but it’s telling that she doesn’t complain. She’s pliant as Kisuke helps her into the shower, and luckily, there’s a stool he can stick inside so she won’t have to stand.
He makes sure the towels and soap are all within easy reach before straightening to back out of the room, only to pause when Ichigo’s hand catches his own.
Kisuke stills before glancing down. Ichigo tips her head back to look up at him, and she doesn’t smile, but the way she looks at him is unmistakable, steadfast and warm and full of something like wonder.
Kisuke’s on his knees before he realizes, and his free hand extends with a mind of its own, tucking a stray strand of Ichigo’s hair behind her ear, and then just… lingering, his fingers skittering across her temple, his thumb tracing the curve of a cheekbone. Ichigo leans into his touch, eyes falling to half-mast, and for a while, neither of them speaks.
“…How long?” Kisuke asks at last, because he’s wanted to know since he figured it out.
Ichigo’s mouth twists, wry and just a little self-mocking. “Well, not from the very first time I saw you at least.”
Kisuke blinks, then splutters. “Saw-? You mean back when Yoruichi-san was still dragging me over to your estate every few months?”
Even Ichigo looks faintly embarrassed as she admits, “I had the biggest crush. It was horrible.”
Kisuke tries to remember, but all he can recall of Ichigo back then is… orange hair, a roiling mass of reiatsu she could never quite control, and a tendency for never being able to stay still.
“You never spoke to me,” Kisuke says haltingly after a long minute of searching his memory.
Ichigo shrugs. “I was just some girl who didn’t even have her Zanpakutou yet, and you were already a Third Seat in the Gotei. You were smart, and strong, and you were only interested in people who could keep up with you. What was I supposed to talk to you about?” She straightens, and the tilt of her chin is all triumph. “I made you notice me though, once I was promoted to captain. And then you gave me a chance to get to know you a lot better than just from Yoruichi-nee-san’s stories.”
Kisuke wonders for all of half a second if Yoruichi had known, but of course she had.
(He’d always known that any feelings he’d felt for her beyond admiration and friendship would go nowhere. Yoruichi simply didn’t feel the same for him, but even if she did, the weight of his debt to her would always put them on uneven ground.
He’d known. She’d known. And in the end, she’d taken matters into her own hands - as she always had, wisdom and selfishness forever two parts of the same coin - and given him a chance for something new.)
“You’re a Shiba,” He says at last, and his hand drops to clasp hers. “I have no right to court you.”
Ichigo scoffs loudly. “Did I ever say I want to be courted? You think I want to deal with some faceless stranger sending me a bunch of gifts I’ll probably have no use for, and expecting me to retire and pop out children for him and tend to his house all day? Who do you think you’re talking to?” She shakes her head. “Besides, it’s not about right. Do you think Kaien-nii-san would ever force me to marry someone I want nothing to do with? I was lucky enough to be born a Shiba. The elders will fuss, but Kaien-nii-san will shut them up. And other people might talk, but my family won’t care, and more importantly, I won’t care.” She looks at him then, eyes blazing with that inner fire Kisuke has always been drawn to. “So long as you don’t care either, what do other people matter?”
Kisuke’s gaze drops to their joined hands. There’s still blood crusted underneath both their fingernails. But Ichigo’s hands fit comfortably in his own, and Kisuke never wants to let go.
He sighs. “You deserve bet-”
“I get to decide what I deserve,” Ichigo cuts him off, and her narrowed eyes dare him to argue. “And I’ve decided that I deserve you. That I want you. And it’s one thing if you don’t want me. If you just want to stay friends, then I’ll respect that. But don’t give me that ‘you deserve better’ bullshit. You’re plenty good enough for me. You make me laugh. You make me happy. You feed me when I forget to eat, and you put up with me when I’m whining about stupid things, and you listen to me when I talk about all the human literature I like to read even though I know you’re not very interested in that stuff. You trust me to watch your back on the field, and you respect me enough to never go easy on me in a spar. You always make time for me even when you’re busy, and when I’m having a bad day, just seeing you makes it better.” Kisuke closes his eyes, and his next breath shakes in his chest. Ichigo forges on, relentless. “Why would I want anyone else when the man I love is already right here beside me?”
She might’ve had more to say. But Kisuke doesn’t hear it because he’s already surged up and caught her mouth with his own. One of his arms snakes around her back while his other hand slams into the shower wall behind her so they don’t go tumbling to the floor. For a moment, the kiss is awkward, teeth catching on lips, the angle not quite right, and then Ichigo makes a sound that’s pure relief before tilting her head, and their mouths slide together like puzzle pieces clicking into place.
They’re both out of breath when they finally part, Ichigo more so than Kisuke, and Kisuke mentally berates himself for forgetting that Ichigo is still recovering. “Sorry, are you-”
Ichigo rolls her eyes and steadies herself on the chair. “I’m fine.” She grins cheekily. “More than fine now.”
Kisuke huffs a laugh, helplessly fond and hopelessly in love with this ridiculous woman. “Alright. Alright, Ichigo. But can we at least get you that shower and some food in you first before we continue?”
Ichigo pouts, but she also reaches back to tug her hair out of the braid Kisuke had put it in to keep it out of the way when he’d been working on saving her life. “Fine, but only cuz I’m starving.”
As if on cue, her stomach growls, and Kisuke hides another smile by leaning forward and kissing her again, although he keeps it short enough to make Ichigo grumble a little.
“I’ll see what we have in the lounge,” Kisuke says, finally getting to his feet again.
Ichigo waves him out, and by the time Kisuke’s fetched a fresh set of clothes from a side-cabinet and left it on the counter, the water is running and steam is curling up to the ceiling.
Kisuke leaves her to it, gently closing the door behind him. He pauses there, looks down at his hands, and feels the phantom warmth of Ichigo’s still curled around them.
If he can have this, he thinks, if Ichigo truly wants this, wants him of all people, then…
Then even if her family protests and the world disapproves, Kisuke will have to be dead and gone before he ever lets her go. If Ichigo is willing to fight for them, then how can Kisuke possibly do anything less?
Another week passes, the detente ends, and the tension mostly eases. Unohana finally managed to heal Aizen enough for the man to at least wake up, even if he’s also been transferred to a cell to wait for trial. It’s guarded twenty-four/seven and layered under at least half a dozen barrier seals, and Aizen himself has been strapped down, his reiatsu locked away, and his Zanpakutou broken.
Kisuke gets in anyway. The guards are all Onmitsukidou and ultimately loyal to a woman who has no qualms helping Kisuke with his revenge.
Aizen’s eyes go wide when he sees him, and Kisuke doesn’t think he’s imagining the fear behind the fury.
“Here to kill me then?” The former lieutenant rasps.
Kisuke smiles, cold and dead and merciless. “Kill you? Do you think me so kind, Aizen-san?” Aizen stiffens as Kisuke produces a syringe, the liquid inside glowing an ominous crimson. “I invented this one just for you.” His smile drops. “You shouldn’t have touched Shiba Ichigo.”
He doesn’t give Aizen time to reply, or stall for time, or even beg. He’s not here for any of that.
He’s halfway back to his own compound when the screaming begins.
Soul Society comes to accept the species now called Visored. The Shiba Clan doesn’t really give them a choice in the matter. Ichigo, Kensei, and Mashiro were the ones most immediately affected by the Hogyoku, but everyone else who was there received a spark as well, just enough to gain the potential for Hollow powers or have it nullified under Kisuke’s experienced hands, and most of them pick the latter. Only Shinji does not.
Soul Society gets used to them. There isn’t any outward difference anyway once they learn to control their other half, and there’s so many other more interesting things to gossip about when it comes to these particular Shinigami-turned-Visored.
Like how Fifth Division captain Hirako Shinji mopes in guilt for three months before coming into work one day with all his hair shaved off. Rumour has it that Shiba Ichigo had had enough and chopped off his hair to shake him out of his cloud of misery. Another rumour says Sarugaki Hiyori just about laughed herself to death when she saw.
Or, like how the Ninth - already fanatically loyal to their captain and lieutenant - rallied around them in the aftermath of the Incident, and for a good six months, the tally of people that they sent to the Fourth every week exceeded even the Eleventh’s.
Or, like how Tenth Division captain Shiba Ichigo and Twelfth Division captain Urahara Kisuke were caught sharing a kiss at a sushi restaurant one summer afternoon, and word of it spread like wildfire. Rumour says Shiba Kaien laughed a noble house leader out the door when he’d dared suggest that the Shiba head should keep a tighter rein on his terribly undisciplined cousin. Another rumour says half the Tenth Division barracks were destroyed one afternoon because the Tenth’s lieutenant challenged the Twelfth’s captain to a spar that got… slightly out of hand. And yet another rumour tells of Shiba Ichigo herself starting a bar fight for the ages after someone had insulted her lover to her face.
But mostly, people see the two of them walking down the street, and it’s a familiar sight by this point. Some sigh of love stories and others sneer at a Rukon rat and bloodstained murderer putting his hands on a noble.
None of their opinions hold any weight though - that becomes clear enough. Not when Ichigo reaches for Kisuke’s hand like she knows he’ll always be there, and Kisuke stands next to Ichigo like his whole being is attuned to her very heartbeat.
Not when they look at each other like they’re two people perfectly in love. Because in the end, for them, that really is all that matters.
My Review of O Maidens in Your Savage Season
Tumblr media
How did I get into this anime? This time, I didn’t rely on the randomizer to pick out a random anime licensed by Sentai Filmworks. I wanted to choose a small-sized anime with not that many episodes to its name. Probably because I spent a good year and a half on Rinne that all of these Sentai picks have been short series! So I went with one that came out not too long ago.
Tumblr media
Kazusa Onodera belongs to the literature club at her school. Seems decent enough, right? These girls read heavily, sexualized books. And as high schoolers, the word sex is taboo and intriguing all at the same time. Each of the girls in the literature club have their own view on the subject, mostly border-lining on wanting to know more and experiencing it soon. Aside from that, Kazusa is noticing that her childhood friend, Izumi Norimoto has changed since they were kids and other girls are noticing him. This, putting Kazusa in an awkward position of avoiding him when he’s around other girls! Half of it is because jealous bitches glare at her if she gets too close to Izumi. The other half is due to the fact that Kazusa is starting to notice her friend as maybe something more.
One day, the girls in the club get word of one of their favorite authors writing a new book. This one about someone writing a bucket list due to dying! One of the girls (Niina Sugawara) suggests sex. Ever since then, all of the other girls are noticing so many new things in their world. Certain words sound dirty, certain objects can be considered phallic, and boys are starting to look fuckable. And our girl Kazusa gets a heavy dose of reality when she gives her neighbor Izumi some dinner.
Tumblr media
She walks upstairs to find Izumi jerking off to some hardcore porn on his computer.
So yeah, coming of age story up in here!
Tumblr media
But it isn’t just Kazusa learning about the trials of love and sex. Momoko deals with her own troubles involving sexuality. Sugawara is torn between a past love and a new love. Rika is discovering love for the first time in her life. And Hongo wants to learn more about sex in order to become a great author. All five of these girls deal with that difficult time of adolescence with first love and the curiosity of “ess eee ex”.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: This is licensed by Sentai Filmworks. As of this date and time, an English cast has been announced, but by the looks of things, nothing has been dubbed yet. I am a little excited to hear several new voices in the cast and a few familiar ones including Brittney Karbowski and Natalie Rial. Many of the Japanese voice actors have been around for a while and I’m kinda familiar with. It’s just that I haven’t spent a great deal hearing them in my day-to-day rotations. But I can’t complain with the cast! Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
JAPANESE CAST: *Kazusa is played by Hiyori Kouno (known for Phil on The Promised Neverland)
*Momoko is played by Momo Asakura (known for Ayumi on Charlotte, Iroha on Magia Record, Sumi on Sakura Trick, Manako on Monster Musume, Nagisa on Kaguya-sama, and Lamy on Fairy Tail)
*Rika is played by Sumire Uesaka (known for Dekomori on Chuunibyo, Nanase on In/Spectre, and Anastasia on Idolm@ster: Cinderella Girls)
*Hongo is played by Tomoyo Kurosawa (known for Miria on Idolm@ster: Cinderella Girls)
*Sugawara is played by Chika Anzai (known for Mina on Attack on Titan, Nana on My Roommate is a Cat, Maki on Sakura Quest, and Young Kamui on Gintama)
ENGLISH CAST: *Kazusa is played by Brittney Karbowski (known for Selim/Pride on FMA: Brotherhood, Misaka on Railgun/Index, Black Star on Soul Eater, Wendy on Fairy Tail, Dekomori on Chuunibyo, and Hisako on Food Wars)
*Momoko is played by Juliet Simmons (known for Yukika on My Love Story and Mayumi on Food Wars)
*Rika is played by Avery Smithhart
*Hongo is played by Elissa Cuellar
*Sugawara is played by Natalie Rial (known for Rui on Domestic Girlfriend)
THIS NEEDS TO PLAY ON REPEAT: Can we watch Creepy McPedofuck get socked in the face on loop?
Tumblr media
Yes!
It goes without saying that I hated this fucker. I heavily enjoyed him getting knocked the fuck out. And I will go in further detail with the shipping category.
SHIPPING: As this is a coming of age anime with girls in high school just discovering love, lust, sex, and all that good shit, we’ve got some stuff to cover in this category.
Tumblr media
*Kazusa x Izumi: The childhood friend scenario! Yeah, these two were quite inseparable as children, but as they grew older, Izumi started to grow somewhat of a popularity streak with the girls at school and as a result, Kazusa found herself inferior compared to these catty bitches. That and these girls are jealous if they see Kazusa even speaking to Izumi.
Throughout the series, Kazusa had to deal with jealous bitches telling her to back off and Kazusa’s friend Sugawara having growing feelings for Izumi every time she’s with him. It seemed like not a big deal in the earlier episodes. But once we see what Sugawara is getting back at, it gets downright love-triangle-ish. It got so crazy that both girls proclaimed their love for Izumi in an open setting during a school festival at the same time. I know Izumi wasn’t going to reciprocate Sugawara’s feelings, but when he started saying things that are friend-zone material, I got worried. I mean, Kazusa and Izumi were childhood friends and there’s been a strain in that due to hormonal changes. I don’t want to bring out the tired old excuse of Izumi being a boy and he’s a dumbass, but I kinda have to. Yes dude likes Kazusa, but he also likes Sugawara and both for different reasons. And when it comes to Sugawara, it’s a sexual attraction. Boy, you are not going to get your cake and pie here.
Now I’ve been in Kazusa’s position before of wanting to be in a relationship with a best friend. A lot of the time, it does not go well and can strain the friendship you once had making it hard to go back if there’s a crap-up. By the looks of things at the end of the anime, these two seem to be on a sure-footing in their relationship.
Tumblr media
*Rika x Shun: Rika has always been seen as an outsider to many of the main cliques of school. But it wasn’t until Shun’s kind words in class one day that changed something inside of Rika. But it doesn’t stop there with this boy! He writes fifty pages of “I Love Yous”, he insists on wanting to be with Rika in any class activity, and goes out of his way to ask her out (which she eventually accepts). And Rika with these new feelings doesn’t really know how to handle it as this is the first time she’s experienced these feelings outside of reading them in a novel. But I gotta say, their confession in front of the school was just downright too cute for words. It definitely deserves a round of applause.
Tumblr media
*Hongo x Milo-sensei: Oh dear God, not this again! I don’t know whether to think Hongo is just using this guy for her novel or if she’s really developing something for her teacher. Milo-sensei seems to have a thing for his teaching colleague. But does this fool have a side-thing for one of his students as well? I’m getting Marmalade Boy and Domestic Girlfriend vibes here. These two go beyond a lot of boundaries throughout the series including panty flashes and a spontaneous trip to a motel. This ship I’m not fully on board with! But this is still leaps and bound ahead of what I’m about to discuss next.
Tumblr media
*Sugawara x Saegusa: Oh for fuck’s sake! Everything about this sounds so wrong, Domestic Girlfriend is demanding an apology for all the bad things said about that. Even Izumi finds this guy pedophilish. An old acting coach has a thing for little girls and finds Sugawara pure when she’s at a young age and Sugawara eventually grows to like him. It’s just that when she figured it out, she’s a young teenager in high school and according to Saegusa, she’s too old.
Too old?! Fool! You are clearly in your late 40s at the earliest. And Sugawara is at least 14 and SHE’S TOO OLD?! I’m about to slap the glasses off your dumbass-face and call Chris Hansen because this is too much. Sugawara, please for the love of all that’s cream pie, stop going after this creep and making him jealous with trying to get with Izumi! You CAN do better! And also, you’re really fucking with the Izumi x Kazusa ship. But more importantly, you CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS CREEPY FUCK!
Tumblr media
And now it’s time to talk about Momoko. I thought that this anime was going to be all about these girls falling in love with different boys. At first, it looked like that with a boy named Satoshi coming in the picture saying he remembers Momoko when they were kids. But then, we get a surprise from Momoko when she finds girls more attractive (particularly Sugawara). Okay, I didn’t see that coming. And frankly, I’d prefer that or just about anything else to that old-ass actor with a little girl complex. But with Momoko, I feel like she’s going to be the one character that doesn’t get to be with someone in the end. Kazusa gets Izumi, Rika gets Shun, and Hongo gets Milo-sensei. Momoko does come out to Sugawara, but I’m unsure if this is one-sided or if Sugawara ends up together with her.
ENDING: All five girls are learning that love and sex come with a mixed bag of everything. Sometimes everything works out, sometimes things fall apart, sometimes actions have consequences, and sometimes a dick comes in and ruins everything.
Because of the blooming relationship of Kazusa and Izumi, Sugawara got jealous and did some risqué things on a train with Izumi. Hongo takes things to another level when she goes to a cheap hotel with Milo-sensei and she was ready to take the bull by the horns. Yeah, she was doing most of this for her novel, but this escalated into full-blown infatuation of her teacher. And Rika was feeling pretty good around school now that she has a boyfriend and is on speaking terms with one of the popular girls. Too bad Rika’s friend is never coming back to school because she’s knocked up! See, consequences!
The high school administration was upset by some recent incidents including a student getting pregnant. But what set them over the edge were reports of Rika and Shun outside of a love hotel. But as we all know, they did no act of sex. They were spying on Hongo and Milo-sensei. But you can’t tell these prudes that. They made an example of Rika and Shun by expelling them and putting out an updated P.D.A. rule at school. Not even Milo-sensei confessing to being at the love hotel could calm this storm with the heads of the school. So the girls of the literature club decide to take drastic measures.
Tumblr media
They shut the school down, hold Milo-sensei hostage, and demand that Rika and Shun are reinstated at school. I wasn’t expecting this anime to go down the route of The Simpson’s classic episode Grade School Confidential, but here we are.
Tumblr media
Yeah, the principal and vice principal had a Groundskeeper Willie attitude to their fight and left them to cool down for the night. This night in the school things kinda went a little crazy, particularly when Shun and Izumi came inside. Especially when you have Izumi admit that he likes Kazusa, but is sexually attracted to Sugawara. Then, you have Momoko irritated that all Sugawara is interested in is Izumi and she’s got this huge crush on her. Add to the thick layer we got already, Shun opens is dumbass mouth to mention he has kissed girls before Rika. Oh, dude. Shut up! But the girls found a way to fix things…sorta! A few episodes back, the girls had a pillow fight to let out their frustration. So, they’re going to play a simple game where there seems to be a happy conclusion for all involved. Rika and Shun share a cute forehead kiss and Shun admits his love for Rika once more. Momoko and Sugawara share a moment. As for Izumi and Kazusa, they both admitted to feeling anxious and uncomfortable jumping from friends to boyfriend/girlfriend. So it looks like they’re going to stay together. Sure looks like it in the epilogue. But we’ll get there soon enough.
Tumblr media
After a full night of revelations, the principal and vice principal return to school the following morning to the entire building covered in protest paper to reinstate Rika and Shun and to get rid of the P.D.A. ban. I guess things worked out since a lot of students saw this and the principal is about as useless as a Band-Aid on a toothache.
At the end of the episode, we see the cast from what looks to be one year later as Rika and Shun are in college now. Rika’s friend and former classmate had her baby. Milo-sensei and Hongo are holding down the literature club with a few new members. It also looks as though they’re still in a relationship (possibly getting married later). I am unsure if Momoko and Sugawara ended up together or not. But at least they’re still friends. And it seems as though Izumi and Kazusa made it through that awkward time of adolescence and they seemed to have stayed together.
This was a fun romp! I think we all remember a time in high school where we were young and naïve about the concept of love and even sex. I can’t say there was one particular character I connected to in this series. I think I’ve been in all of the girl’s positions at one point or another. I’ve been friend-zoned like Kazusa. There was a boy I wasn’t into that wouldn’t leave me alone like Momoko. I was curious to a point where it did affect my own writing like Hongo. I had jealous fits over a friend’s boyfriend much like Sugawara. And once I got in a relationship, I felt as awkward as Rika. See, I’ve been all five at one point.
It’s a confusing time being an adolescent. Along with the changes in your body, there’s that gnawing pressure of noticing blossoming feelings for some person. And you’re not sure if you should talk to them, kiss them, or rip off their clothes in the heat of passion. Not sure if everything from the manga was covered. I’d like to assume it was due to the fact that both the anime series and manga were short. And I think all viewers can agree that…Can we see that gross dude get punched again?
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, that’s so delicious.
So if you’re ready to re-watch possible flashbacks of your awkward high school moments again, check out this anime.
If you would like to watch O Maidens in Your Savage Season, all 12 episodes are available to watch on HI-DIVE.
Ahhh I've been working on this for a while now. College kept me busy, haha.
Thank you for reading!
**EDIT** I should note that I haven’t seen the anime in a while, nor have I read the manga, so take with that what you will
oOo
Hiyori didn't know how to react as she looked at the stick in her hand.
She was pregnant. With Yato's child.
On one hand, she was happy, of course. In her early twenties and being with Yato for just over a year now, Hiyori had had dreams about getting married, raising a family, and spending her life with the one she loved.
Of course, she thought those things had been mostly impossible due to, well, her being human and Yato being a god. Yato didn't exist as far as the government was concerned, so marriage wasn't exactly possible. Legal marriage, anyway. They knew they didn't have forever together, since she was eventually going to age and grow old and pass away while Yato would remain the same. She couldn't even really introduce him to her friends and family because every time she did, they'd forget about Yato the moment he left.
Not that they'd exactly announced their relationship. Yukine knew and they were pretty sure Kofuku and Daikoku had figured it out, but there was a taboo just with Hiyori being friendly with the far shore at all, let alone if it was discovered she was in a relationship with a god. And now pregnant with his baby.
Which brought her to the other hand. How was this even possible? She didn't even think that gods could get other gods pregnant, let alone humans!
oOo
"Kofuku..." Hiyori nervously started, staring straight down at her tea. It was the perfect time to ask. Yato and Yukine had been out on a job since early this morning and Daikoku just left for groceries, so they were the only ones home. "I was just..."
"Hm? Something wrong, 'Yori?"
"I... Is it..." Hiyori choked on her breath. "Is it possible for a god to get a human pregnant?" she asked in a loud whisper, as if worried someone would overhear.
Kofuku looked stunned for a second before a smug grin spread across her face. She sat down next to Hiyori, laying an arm against the girl's shoulders. "It's totally possible! Not exactly common, I'm sure you realize, but it's happened!"
Hiyori felt a wave of anxiousness flood her, but the flutter in her heart was happy and excited.
"Why~?" Kofuku continued, with a bit of singsong to her voice. "Is there perhaps something you should be telling your beeeest god frieeend~? Is my little 'Yori growing up? Thinking she might have to worry about protection?"
"I-" Hiyori was blushing bright red. "I'm thinking I should've worried about it before..." she quietly admitted.
The grin slipped from Kofuku's face and her eyes widened. "You mean..."
Hiyori nodded.
"You're pregnant?"
Hiyori laid her head on the table, hiding her face.
"Yato?"
She nodded against the table. "He doesn't know yet." Hiyori mumbled.
"Well then why were you asking me if it was possible?" Kofuku laughed. "Obviously it is!"
"The test could've been a fluke! I dunno! But I'm kinda freaking out!" Hiyori shouted, still blushing.
"Why?"
"What? What do you mean 'why'!? I'm pregnant with a god's child! A god that no one knows exists and no one knows I'm even dating! It's not like Yato and I can really get married and raise a family together! And what will he think? Does he even wanna be a dad? What about Yukine, and Kazuma, and everyone else!? What about my family and human friends?"
Kofuku took Hiyori's hand. "I think you're worrying too much, Hiyori."
"But-"
The god put a finger to Hiyori's lips. "Listen, do you love Yato?" Hiyori nodded. "Does Yato love you?" she nodded again, tears forming in her eyes. "Are you happy?" Without hesitation, Hiyori nodded once more. "Then you don't need to freak out about the rest. You've made it through plenty, I think you can handle motherhood," she added with a chuckle.
"Thank you..." Hiyori mumbled.
"Yeah, you should be thanking me!" Kofuku laughed, "I helped you even after you hid your relationship from me!"
"Well! We-" Hiyori groaned. "It's not like I can tell my parents! They'll forget about Yato the moment he leaves, although they certainly won't forget about me being pregnant with no husband in sight..."
"I think you're forgetting how the far shore thing works. If you keep bringing him over and keep mentioning Yato around them, they'll at least keep remembering that you have a boyfriend."
"Okay, okay, but Yato also didn't want Daikoku to-" Hiyori groaned and put her face in her hands. "Oh no, he's going to kill him."
Kofuku giggled, "Yup!"
Hiyori just groaned again.
"Do you know how far along you are?" Kofuku asked.
"No, I haven't gone to the doctor at all yet. I only just found out yesterday."
Kofuku nodded her understanding. She closed her eyes as if in thought before suddenly grinning and grabbing Hiyori in a bear hug. "Oh I'm so happy for you, 'Yori!" she squealed. "I'm so excited to see all the tiny Yatos and Hiyoris running around!"
Hiyori laughed awkwardly. "Hold on, hold on, it's only the one!"
"So far," Kofuku teased.
Before Hiyori could respond, the ringing of her cellphone interrupted them.
"Hiyoooriiii!" Yato's voice called through the phone before he suddenly popped by her side with Yukine next to him. "Heyyy! Made more money this morning!" he told her excitedly, holding his wine bottle and shaking it, the coins inside clinking.
When Hiyori didn't respond, he cocked his head in confusion. She just stared at him, not knowing what to say. It was the first time she'd seen him since learning about the baby.
Kofuku just looked between them, giggling and squealing happily.
"Hey- Hello, Yato. Yukine," Hiyori struggled out.
"What's wrong, Hiyori?" Yato asked. "Why are you and Kofuku being so weird? Well, I guess that's kinda normal for Kofuku, but-"
"YOU'REHAVINGABABY!" Kofuku suddenly shouted, bounding up and hugging Yato in her excitement.
Yato was just confused, not understanding a word of what she'd said, but Yukine was able to decipher her yelling.
"You WHAT!?" the regalia burst out, looking like he was about to clobber Yato.
"What!? What'd I do!? Hiyoriiii do you know what they're talking about?"
Hiyori still couldn't seem to speak, so she just stared down at her hands, sitting neatly in her lap, as her face flushed a bright red.
"YOU'VE REALLY DONE IT NOW, YATO!" Yukine continued to shout.
"Hey! What's with all the yelling!?" Daikoku steamed as he arrived to the home, his arms full of groceries.
"YATO GOT HIYORI PREGNANT!" Both Yukine and Kofuku shouted, with frustration and glee, respectively.
"I WHAT!?"
"YOU WHAT!?"
Yato looked to the still-blushing and silent Hiyori with wide-eyes and a slacked jaw, an expression she'd only seen on him twice before; when she gave him his shrine, and the first time she admitted she loved him.
But it was only for a moment before he had to run from Yukine and Daikoku's rage.
oOo
Not too long later, when everyone had calmed down, Daikoku ushered them to sit down at the table. Yato and Hiyori still hadn't spoken to each other, and the former was currently sulking about the whacks he'd been given.
Daikoku groaned and rubbed his palm on his face. "So you two are..."
Hiyori nodded, "Dating," she squeaked out. Yato was still silent, and now laid his head on the table. She could feel his gaze on her, though.
"It's not like we didn't guess as much, Daikii," Kofuku giggled, cuddling up to her regalia.
Daikoku nodded shortly, eyes still closed in thought.
"Well, I'm happy for you," he told Hiyori.
The girl gaped. "What? You're not... Mad?"
"No, I'm not mad! Why would I be mad!?
"Then what was all the hitting for!?" Yato shouted.
Daikoku just took a drink of tea, ignoring the god.
"I'm not mad, Hiyori. It's wonderful you're having a baby. I mean, you could've chosen the father a bit better, but you'll be a great mother."
Yato mumbled something under his breath and laid on the table again, but surprised the group by not having an outburst at Daikoku's tease.
"But you're really going to have a baby!?" Yukine asked excitedly.
"What, you're suddenly all happy now, too?" Yato grumbled at him with a glare.
"I'm happy for Hiyori. Mad at you for being such an irresponsible god."
"Hey, I didn't know this was possible!"
"That's what makes you irresponsible!"
"Enough yelling! Yato, how have you been a god for this many years and not known it was possible? Yukine, it's not like you probably knew, either," Daikoku retorted, trying to break up their spat.
"Well if I was gonna... do it with someone, I would try to find out whether or not I could get them pregnant!" Yukine shouted.
"It's not like we planned to... do it... It just kinda happened one night! We weren't thinking!"
"Yato!" Hiyori whined, flushing brightly again as he talked about their love life.
"ENOUGH! NO YELLING IN MY HOUSE!" Daikoku yelled as he slammed his hands on the table.
oOo
The rest of the afternoon, drifting into evening, was spent lying around in Kofuku's living room. After the group had calmed down, Hiyori found Yato latching himself to her.
"I love you, Hiyoriii," he told her, a grin on his face, his arms wrapped around her from behind, and his nose snuggling against her shoulder. "I love you sooo much."
"I love you, too," Hiyori squeaked out, cheeks red as she glanced at the other people in the room, not used to their relationship being out in the open.
He moved a hand to her stomach and rubbed it lovingly. "And I love you, toooo~"
Hiyori relaxed as he kissed her cheek and smiled warmly.
"I'm gonna make the same promise I made your mother," he said, still addressing Hiyori's stomach. "I'm gonna make you the happiest kid in the world."
Hiyori grinned and moved her hand to hold his, still resting on her stomach.
She blushed brightly again as Kofuku let out an "awww" and reminded Hiyori that they weren't alone.
Yato, shameless as he was, just took Hiyori's cheek and turned her towards him so he could kiss her properly.
"Hey, just because everyone knows, doesn't mean we need to see you being all lovey-dovey!" Yukine told them, but chuckling despite his words.
"Speak for yourself!" Kofuku giggled. I've been waiting for this to happen for too long!" Hiyori watched Daikoku pat his lady's shoulder as a means of telling her to calm down a bit, but the corner of his lips was definitely ticked up, smiling as he saw two of his closest friends so happy together.
Yato just stuck his tongue out at them before taking her hand and pulling her upstairs to he and Yukine's room.
He was quick to lay on her lap, leaving lazy kisses on Hiyori's stomach through her shirt. He then wrapped his arms around his girlfriend again and snuggled into her.
Hiyori smiled adoringly at him and started running her fingers through his hair. After a minute or so of comfortable silence, though, Yato let out a sniffle and Hiyori looked down in surprise. He sniffed again before turning his face out of her shirt and giving her a watery grin, a single year running down his cheek.
"You're so-" he started, holding her cheek. "You give me so much, Hiyori. Sometimes I wonder which of us is really the divine one."
"I think you're giving me too much credit," she chuckled.
Yato shook his head. "You became my first follower, you helped me find Yukine, you gave me a shrine, and love, and now-" he choked on his words. "Now a baby!"
"You gave me a family, too, Yato."
"You could've had a family without meeting me," he mumbled.
"But I want a family with you, not anyone else," she reminded him with a smile. "And I don't just mean the baby. Yukine, Kofuku, Daikoku, and especially you... You're all family. I can't imagine what I'd be like without you guys," she told him before kissing him softly, the god quickly responding.
"I love you, Hiyori," he mumbled against her lips before pecking her nose.
Hiyori giggled, "I love you, too, Yato. Very much." She took his lips again.
"Ew, gross!" Yukine teased, leaning on the frame of the open door. "Get a room!"
"I'm in my room!" Yato growled, irritated at the regalia and tossing a pillow at him.
"It's my room, too," Yukine reminded him with a smirk. "And I had a long day, all the work I did, so I'm going to sleep!"
Yato glared at the boy, who responded with a stuck-out tongue to match what the god had done earlier.
"Whatever," Yato finally responded, waving flippantly. "We have other things to do, anyway!" Neither Yukine nor Hiyori got another word in before Yato was dragging his girlfriend downstairs and out the door.
Yato tossed a grin to her as he slowed his quick pace so she could walk comfortably. "Let's go out to eat to celebrate!" he suggested. "And then we'll start figuring out what we gotta do for the baby!"
How could she have been worried? She had so much good fortune in her life, and having a child with the one she loved only added to it.
Fortune, huh? Kōun... I like that. Hiyori grinned.
Things could only get better from here, she decided, smiling widely as she walked with Yato, hand-in-hand.
What is the kagerou project?
This post is for those who are interested in interacting with my muses Kido, Kano, and Konoha, but maybe don’t know enough about the series to really know where to start plotting wise. I’ll be linking this post to their abouts (when I make them) and I welcome any questions you might have on it!
First off, the Kagerou project is originally a set of vocaloid songs / videos that later got translated to a manga, novels, and an anime. It’s a story told achronlogically, meaning pretty much out of order and not straight forward at all - another reason I wanted to make this post so newcomers don’t feel confused.  That and all the mediums help tell the full story - so unless you’ve taken in all of them it’s hard to piece together the story from start to finish, and there is still a lot of details we don’t know. The kagerou project isn’t perfect but it’s a good story overall.
The actual story / character info will be below the cut cause this is gonna be a super long post.
Also if you get weirded out by snakes it’s probably not the best idea to read this - there’s no pictures but the word ‘snake’ comes up ALOT. Also please don’t read this if Suicide is a trigger for you, as that is something that I will be mentioning a few times aswell.
MAJOR CHARACTERS
First off I’ll introduce the characters / what their powers are and then explain the songs then the story and how the powers are significant and how the characters play into the story as a whole.
Azami - the medusa. Creator of the abilities.
The Mekakushi Dan - the ‘blindfold’ gang. It started as a childhood fantasy but Kido, Kano, and Seto kept the group name after Ayano’s death. Kano was the one that came up with the name.
 Ayano Takeyama - Number 0, Foster older sister to Kido, Kano, and Seto. Has the snake of favoring eyes. She is able to project her feelings and memories onto others.
Tsubomi Kido - Number 1, technically the leader. Has the snake of Concealing eyes. She can make herself effectively invisible and unable to be perceived by others as long as she doesn’t touch anyone. She can use this ability on other people, and any sound they make while the ability is active is unheard of by others.
Kousuke Seto - Number 2. Has the snake of Stealing eyes. He can read people’s minds and when used to its full potential, he can read a person's memories.This ability also lets him understand the thoughts of animals, though they can still not understand him.
Shuuya Kano - Number 3. Has the snake of Deceiving eyes. It allows him to change what people perceive him as. He can change his appearance to impersonate other people and even animals. He can only use this ability on himself and not others.
Marry Kozakura - Number 4. Has two ‘eye’ abilities technically, Locking Eyes and Combining eyes. Locking eyes she inherited from her mother Shion and her grandmother Azami. It allows her to temporarily stop the movement of whoever meets her gaze. She is not able to turn people into stone, but it can paralyze them for a short amount of time. The Snake of Combining Eyes can combine and therefore control all snakes. It was directly given to her by Azami when she died and entered the Kagerou Daze. This ability causes her to automatically obtain a snake after its owner has died and also allows her to take a snake directly from them.Combining Eyes also passively causes the other snakes (and thus their owners) to be drawn towards its owner.
Momo Kisaragi - Number 5. She has the snake of Drawing Eyes. This ability can draw peoples' attention to herself regardless of their preferences in tastes or interests. She is also able to tell where a person's attention is drawn to.
Ene / Takene Enomoto - Number 6. She has the Snake of opening eyes. This allows her to to split her consciousness from her body, which then can reside in electronic devices (such as a cellphone) as a cyber-being. After regaining her body as Takane, she is still able to send herself to other electronic devices as Ene, but doing so causes her body to lose consciousness.
Shintaro Kisaragi - Number 7. Has the snake of Retaining eyes. This allows him to remember everything he sees. When his ability is fully activated, he is able to remember the events of past routes and speak with the Snake of Retaining Eyes.
Hibiya Amamiya - Number 8. Has the snake of Focusing Eyes.This has the power to perceive objects and details that are far away from an aerial view.
Konoha / Haurka Kokonose - Number 9. Has the snake of Awakening Eyes. This gives him the power to remake his body into one that he finds to be his "ideal" - as Haruka was physically weak and sickly, this meant for him to become supernaturally strong. He can also heal from even fatal injuries with this ability, which looks like multiple black snakes wrapping around his body when activated.
Hiyori Asahina - Number 10. Depending on the route she will have the snake of Focusing Eyes instead of Hibiya. 9/10 times though it is Hibiya. Just mentioning this fact for technicalities sake.
The Snake of Clearing eyes - the story’s main antagonist. This ability can interfere with and stop the use of other eye abilities completely. It normally possesses either Ayano’s father or Hibiya depending on the route. In every route it will always possess Konoha towards the end - as he is the strongest member and none of the others in the Dan can stand a chance against him. (if you see me reblog a black haired konoha, it’s him being possessed by this ability)
THE STORY
the first thing to know about the kagerou project story is that it is a time loop story. Each medium contains its own loop (or in the manga’s case, multiple), which is why someone has to consume all the mediums to really get the full story. Some character details or interactions only happen in one route / loop.  I’ll be going over what people are most likely to find out through google searches / the easiest medium (the music or anime) but will mention other routes here and there for context. Generally most routes we know of follow most of the same story beats but some differ dramatically - and I don’t want to confuse people.
For the overall story though - it starts with Azami. She is the medusa, but not in the traditional greek myth sense. It is just what humans started referring to her as thanks to her snake-like features. Truthfully she doesn’t know entirely what she is, she was born at the beginning, and lasted through the ages with not even a physical form until she met two beings - humans and a snake. The humans tried to kill her on first sight while the snake was kind and explained what the humans were to Azami. Her physical form ended up being a mix of these two species, hence humans calling her a medusa. (pictured below is azami from the novels)
Tumblr media
Overtime she tried to interact with humans but they always shunned her and tried to kill her until one day she met an albino man named Tsukihiko. I will skip over the specifics but she ends up falling in love with him and building a family with him. They were both considered ‘monsters’ by society and thus made a perfect pair. They even had a daughter, Shion.
Now it’s important to note that during this time she made her abilities. considered ‘eye’ abilities or ‘snakes’, Azami had the ability to create almost sentient forces within her to help her solve problems. For example, the ‘favoring eyes’ ability was created so she could properly show her emotions to her infant daughter, pass on all the love that she had onto Shion in a way she would understand even as a baby.
However after Shion was born, after creating these abilities, she realized that both Tsukihiko and Shion were going to out live her and die. She had lived thousands, maybe even millions, of years by now and hadn’t aged a day - but her husband obviously had. In this fear a new power was born, the snake of clearing eyes. It offered a solution to Azami, for them to create an entirely new world where death and time didn’t exist, where she could simply be happy with her family. She does this, and tells her husband and child they would leave the world together. They agree, but Tsukihiko wants to officially marry Azami before they leave the world. She allows him to go back to his old home to get wedding rings and someone to marry them officially, but doesn’t return. What does return are humans, out to kill Azami and her daughter. Azami defeats the men with ease but believes now her husband is all but dead. In her grief, she escapes to the world she made - the Kagerou Daze - and leaves her child behind.Tsukihiko manages to return, escaping from the confinement the other humans had put him in, and knows once he finds his daughter alone that his wife left the world. They are not upset with her, and continue to live out their days in their home in the forest.
Tsukihiko eventually dies of old age and Shion grows up. Shion has her own daughter called Mary, who is a quarter medusa. Shion is extremely protective of her daughter after the events of her own childhood, and tells Mary never to leave the house. However being the fun loving child she was, Mary disobeyed her mother once. It wasn’t long after she was found by humans who were proceeding to beat her to death when her mother found her. They were both about to die at the hands of these humans when Azami decided to intervene.
She wasn’t gone completely, she had been watching over her daughter and grandaughter from the Daze. Knowing what was about to happen to her family, she issued a command to the world to take in the two people dying and bring them up into the world. The date? August 15th.When the two arrived in the world they were dead. The world brought them back to life but they couldn’t leave back to the ‘real’ world without a new lifeforce. Azami, wanting her daughter to live, gave her the core of her power - the snake of combining eyes, also known as the ‘queen snake’. But Shion wanted her own daughter to live, and passed it onto Mary. Mary was able to return to the real world, but had no memory of the Daze or what her mother and grandmother had done for her - she was now alone.
The combining eyes was the core of Azami’s power, and without it she could no longer control the Kagerou Daze. She couldn’t tell the world to stop bringing people into it, to stop giving them powers,and to stop returning people to the real world. This was the mistake that costs the main character’s so much grief.
Each of the members of the mekakushi dan (besides Shintaro) died on the day of August 15th. The Kagerou Daze, still fulfilling its order, took them and whoever they were with at the time up into the world, and if they resonated with one of Azami’s abilities, gave them the snake before putting them back out into the real world - the snake/ eye ability being their new life force and the reason they’re alive.
Kido died in a fire with her sister, and got the snake of concealing eyes. Seto drowned with his dog and got the snake of stealing eyes. Kano died in a robbery with his mother and got the snake of Decieving eyes. Momo also drowned and got the drawing eyes ability. Takene was poisoned and got the opening eyes ability. Haruka had a heart attack and got the awakening eyes ability. Hibuya and Hiyori were in a traffic accident and depending on the route - one of them gets the Focusing eyes. As stated above, 9/10 times it’s Hibuya, Hiyori only gets it in the manga route/loop.
Ayano is a special case. She committed suicide with the goal in mind to go to the Kagerou Daze. She stays in the daze with her eye ability for a reason which I’ll get to later.
Now Shintaro does have an eye ability of his own, however it was NOT one of Azami’s abilities. I will also get to this later.
Tumblr media
Kido, Kano, and Seto all end up being orphaned around the same time and ended up in the same orphanage. Forced into the same room together as they were the ‘strange’ kids. They were all adopted by the Tateyama family, Ayano’s family, who were researching the Medusa aka Azami. they took these kids in for their research but also genuinely cared about them. With the help of Ayano - the three children come to be not so scared of their abilities and learn to like humanity again. The hoodies the three wear were gifts from their foster parents and Ayano to hide their eyes - as when their abilities were being used / went out of control, their eyes turned red.
One August 15th, Ayano’s parents were involved in a mudslide. They went to the Daze, and her father returned with the snake of clearing eyes. This wasn’t apparent to Ayano or any of the children at first, but Ayano soon found out that her father planned to kill her two friends at school (Haruka and Takene, who have pre existing health conditions and were in his ‘special education’ class) on August 15th so that they would go to the daze and get more snakes.
She found the clearing eyes wanted all the snakes in the real world for some reason, and thus on August 15th, she committed suicide by jumping off the roof of the school building, going into the daze and holding one of the eye abilities hostage by never returning from the daze. The clearing eyes still continued with his plan, Takene and Haruka died that day as well and got their respective powers. Haruka and Takene were strange cases though, they didn’t die with another person. Instead the clearing eyes tricked the world of the Kagerou Daze, getting it to recognize the mind and body as two different entities. So Takene’s body was left in the Daze while her mind returned to the real world as ‘Ene’, and could only exist within cyberspace. Haruka’s mind was left in the Daze and the perfect, healthy, body that he wanted returned to the real world as Konoha, who had no memories and seemingly little personality.
 But left the only one of their friend group, Shintaro, alive with all of his friends having died on the same day. He became a shut in, and for two years did not leave his home. The story officially ‘starts’ with Shintaro and Ene. Ene pretending she did not know Shintaro at all, found his computer during the two year timespan and proceeded to make his life hell, but also give him company within those two lonely years.
It’s important to note that Ene is crucial to Shintaro’s overall development. In some loops, her presence wasn’t enough and he ends up committing suicide out of grief. But emotions and lessons learned are kept throughout the loops, and eventually Ene came to realize that she had to help Shintaro no matter what.
Anyways, in a series of unfortunate events, Shintaro ends up needing to leave his house to go shopping as August 14th is a part of the obon holiday in Japan and he couldn’t survive one day without his precious computer being operational. On his one outing in two years - he ends up being wrapped into a robbery / terrorist attack on a shopping center and meets the rest of the Mekakushi dan (at this moment, only Kido, Seto, Kano, Mary, and Shintaro’s sister Momo). They help diffuse the situation at the shopping center and Shintaro ends up passing out (just due to nerves or he actually gets grazed by a bullet, depends on the loop), and brought back to the Mekakushi Dan hideout aka their apartment. It’s here he learns about the eye abilities, how his sister has one, and the exact events after this differ from loop to loop. Either way Shintaro becomes a sort of ‘unofficial’ member of the Dan and spends time with them over the next few days as he tries to wrap his head around the mysterious powers of the Dan and what they mean.
How the Dan ends up recruiting Hibuya and Konoha differs as well, but generally the group comes across the traffic accident that Hibiya and Hiyori were involved in and Konoha being there as well. Sometimes Ene will ask Shintaro to chase after Konoha, recognizing him as Haruka, and then they end up at the hospital and wait for Hibuya to be released / able to have visitors so they can talk to him. At this point in some of the loops, the Dan knows that August 15th is an important day to them, they’re just not sure why.
Hibuya leaves the hospital, determined to find Hiyori - not quite sure what has happened to her but knows she might be dead or lost or looking for him. Momo manages to get Hibuya to calm down and control his new eye ability, just in time for the Dan to be put into trouble.
It should be noted that technically, Azami had only 10 powers. And now with the exception of the power now taken by Ayano, all of those powers are in the real world. Which means it was time for the Clearing eyes to make its move. In the Novel and Anime route, the Dan ends up taking the fight to the Clearing eyes. (Possibly in the manga route aswell, I haven’t finished it).
Regardless, the Clearing eyes objective becomes clear rather quickly - it plans to kill every member of the Mekakushi Dan except for Shintaro (who doesn’t have one of Azami’s powers, but he still dies in some routes just for getting in the way) and Mary (who has the queen snake / snake of combining eyes, which clearing eyes wants). With each member of the Mekakushi Dan that dies, Mary gains their ability and grows closer to a full medusa. When she has five snakes - she can control the Kagerou Daze itself. The Clearing Eyes plans to kill the Mekakushi Dan, possess Mary, and become immortal + have control over the Daze and all of Azami’s abilities.
This is how most routes end. As soon as Mary has five snakes (four or more of her friends die), she has the power to control the Kagerou Daze and she has the world take in the Clearing eyes and thus trapping it there forever. After this she uses her new found powers to rewind time to sometime after her mother’s death but before everything else happened. This is how most routes start.
In the manga route specifically, the only ones alive after Mary has trapped the Clearing Eyes is Ayano (as she didn’t stay in the Daze in this route), Shintaro, and Mary. Everyone else is dead and gone and Mary is about to rewind time. Before she does though, she has Mary do something - give Shintaro an eye ability. Ayano gives up her life so that Mary may make her life force into an ability - the snake of retaining eyes. It is so that Shintaro ‘will never forget the tragedy that occurred here’. Shintaro has the ability to retain everything he sees, even across timelines. This route happens early on in the number of routes, but it’s never told to the audience when exactly it happens.
But, the problem with this is that he doesn’t remember he has an ability, it has to be triggered somehow. But it’s because of this that Shintaro killing himself out of grief in some timelines is so detrimental to the overall story - if Shintaro dies then he can’t activate his power and he can’t help save everyone. So for the story to truly be realized and head towards a good ending, Shintaro can’t die until after he remembers his ability.
Tumblr media
In the novel route, only Seto, Mary, and Hibiya are alive after the confrontation with the Clearing eyes, and they live out their lives for almost two years before Mary decides to rewind time. Hibiya is able to contact the people who died and are now stuck in the Kagerous daze (death doesn’t exist there, so people are ‘alive’ there but trapped forever) and they all collectively make the decision to turn back time. Shintaro even comments that they’ve probably done this dozens, or maybe even hundreds or thousands of times by that point.
In the Anime route is when Shintaro remembers his ability. He remembers this due to something he knows but he shouldn’t have known. While he was friends with Ayano in school, he never knew that her siblings that she spoke about were Kido, Kano, and Seto. Yet while at the Mekakushi Dan apartment, he finds a picture with them all in it - and somehow knows that it’s the truth despite being surprised to find it out. This one event was enough for him to get things rolling and eventually remember his ability. He ends up killing himself and going to the Daze to see Ayano.
This is also shown in Route 1 of the lost time memory music video. He gets shot trying to protect Konoha (who was getting possessed by the clearing eyes, and thus tried to kill himself so that he wouldn’t hurt his friends), and he appears in the Daze to speak to Ayano and bring her back to the real world. The combination of Shintaro’s Retaining eyes, and Ayano’s favoring eyes, is enough to help get Mary to calm down. Ayano’s ability also lets her put the memories of others into other people, so she helps Shintaro show Mary that everything will be fine and that no matter what happened in every other route, they all love and care for her. This was enough to get her to calm down and for her to take everyone up into the Kagerou Daze, not just the clearing eyes.
Once trapped there, the Clearing eyes had nowhere to go and also was tricked by Konoha and Haruka into becoming the new snake / life force for Hiyori so that she could come back to life. I should note here that it is possible for those with snakes to sort of come and go from the Kagerou Daze as they please - people in the daze just can’t leave without a snake, so Mary also returns the snakes to those who had died up until this point so that they could leave the kagerou daze afterwards. Haruka is able to get back into his body after Konoha willingly gives it over, Takene gets her body back, and they are all able to have a few moments with those that they had died with to get some closure.
They then leave the daze together, and are able to continue on with their lives. (also shown in sumertime record)
Again, I skipped over ALOT here. But this is overall the major plot points of the kagerou project.
The Kagerou project is about dealing with loss, about looking forward to the future, about learning that you don’t have to deal with everything alone - there is always someone willing to help you. It’s about overcoming fear and despair, and learning to take a step forward. There is a lot of death and sadness in this story but there’s also a lot of goofy fun moments too - to remind us that even dark moments have a little light in them.
