Week 5: The Deep (1977)

The film The Deep from 1977 is about an undersea adventure with a couple who become heavily involved in dangerous conflicts with treasure hunters, when they find their own treasure in a sunken World War ll cargo ship. Among the treasure they find hidden bottles and bottles of drugs still in tacked and around every corner they are followed by hunters. I found the film to be very weird, cheesy, and interesting. The film had a budget cost of $9 million to make and earned $100 million in the box office, it seemed to be a success at its time. The film was directed by Peter Yates and had other famous stars such as Jacqueline Bisset, Nick Nolte, Robert Shaw, and Robert Lee Minor. The Deep was filmed in many places like Florida, Jamaica, Catalina, the Bahamas and at the end they went to film in Bermuda.

Unfortunately, the movie critics did not enjoy the film very well as much as they hopped for. In an article called Blu-ray review-The Deep (1977) by admin they say "Adapted from the novel by Peter Benchley, The Deep is a fairly plodding adventure that has moments of excitement – mainly the stunning underwater sequences – but never quite gets a momentum going like that other movie based on a Benchley book. Everyone gives good performances and takes the whole thing seriously – including Robert Shaw, despite his character Romer Treece going deep sea diving whilst wearing a shirt and khaki shorts and looking like your granddad dressed in his Sunday afternoon casuals – and whilst you can’t really complain about the quality of the production there is a little too much plot going on, with numerous shady characters coming in and out of the picture and various double-crosses going on, that the 124-minute running time feels a lot longer than it is. Still, it could have been the full three-hour TV cut…". (admin) They also say "The Deep was clearly a film that got made thanks to the success of Jaws and you get the feeling that, at that time, Peter Benchley could have written down what he did on his holidays, throw in a shark or two, get Robert Shaw to star in it and BOOM! – we have a hit! Get past the Jaws connections and The Deep is a good, but not great, underwater adventure with fleeting moments of excitement to keep you invested." "Nevertheless, it is solid, if unremarkable, Sunday afternoon entertainment that you could put on after the umpteenth repeat of Thunderball on ITV2 if you’re in the mood for more sharks, coral reefs and shady criminal dramas (and it has a better theme tune)." After watching the film myself I would have to agree with them on it being an ok film to watch, it was beautiful but definitely to many things going on at once and many people popping in and out.

A historical event I found that happened in the same year as the film came out (1977) was a plane crash that happened in the Canary Islands. "On the 27th of March of this year one of the World’s Worst Air Disasters in history occurred. Two jumbo jets collided on the airport runway killing 583 people." (Guy Facts) Another historical event I found from 1977 was Elvis Presley performed his last concert before he died just at the age of 42.

The film to me felt very cheesy, to long, and funny. There was a lot of silly mistake you could see in the background or it would be in your face noticeable. It had some funny dialogue shared along with the characters and was very strange too. A scenes that really stood out to me was when David and Romer when back to the cargo ship to find more drugs, David leaves to another room, where he is greeted by a Eel. The crew did a wonderful job with the under water scenes and taking full control what what to capture.

Its not the best quality video but if you do watch the film it beautiful.

I believe the movie was felt unconventional and conventional because of the small budget they had, I had a hard time understanding the plot and the characters and it went on for to long running at 2 hours and 4 minutes. They had a lot going on from weird fight scenes to rituals? They did have popular actors, and they had Peter Benchley screenplay and write the story. I think this film is a hit or miss for most people.

One textual evidence I wanted to share was the opening to the film and how beautiful it was.

The other textual evidence I wanted to share was a long fighting scene and them blowing up the shipwreck.

Ok so Robert's parents are. absolutely different people. I do not mean in parenting styles, for the most part Adeline and Harvey were actually incredibly similar when it came to the upbringing of the first 3 children [Robert's brothers Terry, Bradley, and Felix]

It was after the triplets [Robert, Paul, and Donavan] were born that things changed and that was. solely because of Robert. It was hard to notice at first, because the three were so young at the time, but as the triplets got older it was clear Robert was different.

he displayed behaviors that would be considered bizarre by many but his mother, Adeline, took it as a sign of advanced intellect. Whether or not this was properly proven is unknown.

In short, while she and Harvey [the childrens father] tended to the last 2 children [William and Talecia], as well as parenting the eldest 5, Robert's intelligence was. exploited in a sense. Adeline would take him to doctors and college professors and they would examine him and see what was going on in his mind. She actually sold the rights to what he knew for a hefty amount of money and went to a lot of fancy dinner parties to discuss Robert and his unique brain.

Adeline slowly ceased to focus on Robert, as she felt he was smart enough to care for himself and even his brothers+sister. She properly parented the other 7 with Harvey.

None of the other children were treated this way. They all displayed similar psychological characteristics to Roberts, but werent deemed as intelligent as Robert, according to Adeline.

Harvey tried his best to treat Robert like a person rather than a computer, a piece of meat used only for the knowledge it had accrued over the years.

He tried in vain. Robert ended up being the absolute worst thing to happen to the Charleston bloodline. Nearly sadistic, even.

Now you might be thinking "hey you said the parents were different. different how??" and different as in Adeline exploited and exposed her sons intelligence to make her social circle skyrocket into the air. She became powerful due to her sons brain. Scarred him mentally, threatened him often, and forced away his sense of humanity, but it didn't matter. She was popular.

Harvey disliked this about Adeline. Had things been different, however, Admin wouldve never happened. Robert's sense of right and wrong, his ability to feel empathy, everything was stripped of his mind after a particular incident with Adeline.

He is supposed to take medications so he can at least regulate his anger. Adeline told him not to as it would alter his mind for the worst. Harvey no longer had a say. His son was gone and he only had this shell to prove he existed at one point.

Robert is a bad person. Psychologically disturbed and incapable of doing the right thing, mainly due to the abusive actions done by these higher up scientists and professors, but still a bad person. One who refuses help, which ultimately led him to his demise after the one thing he created with a heart and mind turned against him.

TL;DR: Adeline and Harvey Charleston had 8 children. One of them was very smart and Adeline took advantage of that. Harvey did not want to take advantage of that, but ultimately had no say and he took care of the other seven kids. Robert is a complete shell of what he couldve been, and in an indirect sense Adeline is the reason Admin killed Robert.

New decade, new follower milestone, and the theme going forward is “that ADHD mood” (x) apparently.

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these, I figured it was getting annoying every month, but 40,000 seems like a good number to welcome all the new folk, post some updates, and say how thankful I am for everyone who has been with me over the last half decade since my blog went viral and turned my life upside down in the best way possible. So I finally cast the school staff and teachers for my DC High School AU, which I thought some of you would have some fun with! Sunday is historically day to attend worship and spend time with family. It’s also, in more urban areas the day when the biggest newspapers come out. Another beautiful but blanked up day because this curse still hangs in the air, no justice yet but it’s coming! Justice is coming! Sunday’s will soon be as they once were, different, through life experiences but they will family days again!

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge just returned back to London last night after a five day tour of Pakistan 🇵🇰. The Royal tour was successful far and above expectations. They had promised the children a family weekend. I am certain there were lots of tears along the way despite FaceTime and talking, lots of hugs upon return home. Princess Charlotte has developed a passion for unicorns. Over the summer, as boys do, will all of the garden time that the Duchess did with her family he must have seen salamanders and lizards or just fell for them via books perhaps. So the whole family happily back together along with boss baby , Prince Louis. He acquired that title from his facial expression, priceless ones, during the flyover on Buckingham Palace balcony.

The Christmas church service last year, upon exiting, madam tried to engage Prince William in conversation, he was wise to her moves and made himself very busy fiddling with his scarf. She then tried Prince Charles who in turn ignored her. The term scarfing has truly taken on a life of its own online🤣🤣🤣😂😂. I think this is clearly Prince William putting his foot down clearly expressing his opinion.The line she’s not invited, also has a bit of a cite reference, the day of Prince Louis’ christening, as they left the chapel to walk back into the entrance, Princess Charlotte said to the amassed media, “you’re not coming”, was tremendously funny and sweet. Her personality was already showing!

In all the a Star Wars movies the FORCE is the power of the energy for good to fight evil. The force be with you has become common usage when you wish some good luck or best wishes in all kinds of situations. We have had a clue very similar wording, l cannot recall exactly. Rehab on the dl as the kids used to say. Down low, secretly. The emoji is the shhhh emoji, so it’s information to be kept quiet. So is that what visits to L.A. are now? Rehab? Is it compelled rehab?? She truly does need help, l also think a full medical and psychiatric work-up/assessment would be prudent. A long history of paranoia, people medicate themselves when experiencing psychotic symptoms. Unsure when this will happen. Harry needs family rehab, medical care, therapist but most of all time away from madam, of any appearances with her. Time to recharge his personal batteries, get his mojo back, as MM ANON used the word mojo, the other day!😊

Invictus recovery

Invictus, Harry’s blood sweat and l am certain many tears were the impetus for him creating Invictus. Invictus from the Latin means undefeated or unconquered. It is the perfect word for describing the individuals who are veterans with visible or not visible post war trauma. The next a Invictus Games are you be held at The Hague, The Netherlands in May, 2020. Harry did a quick visit there while madam was having her fauxmegnancy. This organization has helped uncounted veterans and their families, through the games, the camaraderie etc. He has done extremely well and he should be very very proud of helping sooo many including himself!

Mental Illness and Authors

First of all, I would like to give a definition of depression cited from the website American Psychiatric Association:

“Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home.

Depression symptoms can vary from mild to severe and can include:

Feeling sad or having a depressed mood

Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed

Changes in appetite — weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting

Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much

Loss of energy or increased fatigue

Increase in purposeless physical activity (e.g., hand-wringing or pacing) or slowed movements and speech (actions observable by others)

Feeling worthless or guilty

Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions

Thoughts of death or suicide

Symptoms must last at least two weeks for a diagnosis of depression.

Also, medical conditions (e.g., thyroid problems, a brain tumor or vitamin deficiency) can mimic symptoms of depression so it is important to rule out general medical causes.

Depression can strike at any time, but on average, first appears during the late teens to mid-20s. Women are more likely than men to experience depression. Apart from the above-mentioned definition, there are several interesting facts about depression. One of them is that writing is one of the professions in which people are most likely to suffer from depression. Artists and writers are among the most vulnerable of professionals due to irregular pay and isolation which contribute to the propensity for writers to succumb to depression.

Also novelist Simon Brett, who has acknowledged his own struggles with depression, agreed with the content and symptoms of depression. “You spend long hours sitting on your own," he said. "Writing can be wonderful therapy, but you are digging into yourself, and if you are writing fiction and creating characters, a certain amount of self-examination and self-doubt is inevitable." “Many writers are also introverted, quiet people, and find it stressful to have their work assessed publicly”, Brett added. Simon believes that there are specific points in the novel-writing cycle when authors are particularly vulnerable. "Almost every writer I know goes through the same reaction after a novel is finished – there are 24 hours of euphoria and then all the negative thoughts you have shut out while finishing it come out, and either you get drunk or depressed or get the flu.”

Now I want to name and compare several writers who suffered from depression. Most of the authors wrote down and announced their feelings and moods in their books.

The first one is Sylvia Plath. In one of her books, she writes:

“God, but life is loneliness, despite all the opiates, despite the shrill tinsel gaiety of 'parties' with no purpose, despite the false grinning faces we all wear. And when at last you find someone to whom you feel you can pour out your soul, you stop in shock at the words you utter — they are so rusty, so ugly, so meaningless and feeble from being kept in the small cramped dark inside you so long. Yes, there is joy, fulfillment and companionship — but the loneliness of the soul in its appalling self-consciousness is horrible and overpowering.” — The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath

In these lines, she emphasizes especially on loneliness and the dark inside a human mind. Sylvia Plath's experience of depression was so deeply a part of her work that it's hard to disentangle them. She wrote honestly about the disorder and inner demons, which might were the reasons why she ended her life at the age of 30.

Another person who suffered from depression is the well-known author Tennessee Williams. In his book “The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore”, Williams argues:

“We all live in a house on fire, no fire department to call; no way out, just the upstairs window to look out of while the fire burns the house down with us trapped, locked in it." — The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore

Playwright Williams, who also wrote classics like A Streetcar Named Desire, suffered depression all his life, battled drug and alcohol addiction, and was briefly institutionalized in 1969. In his above-mentioned lines, he highlighted his dilemma, stating that you have no other choice to break out and cannot escape from life, that there is “no way out”.

Also J.K. Rowling was a victim of depression. Rowling's life was not that easy as some may think. She was an unemployed mother with lots of problems and suddenly became a billionaire who writes bestsellers, but she's been frank about the severe depression underlying her experience. In an interview with the Times (UK) in 2000, Rowling declared:

“Depression is the most unpleasant thing I have ever experienced...It is that absence of being able to envisage that you will ever be cheerful again. The absence of hope. That very deadened feeling, which is so very different from feeling sad. Sad hurts but it's a healthy feeling. It is a necessary thing to feel. Depression is very different.“

The most interesting thing is that Rowling wrote her famous series of Harry Potter not in spite of her depression, but due to it. She also created dementors which are perfect symbolism for depression and are a brilliant aid in understanding what it actually feels like to be depressed.

There are several causes, which are not definitively proven, why writers tend to struggle with depression so much. However, there a few speculative guesses.

- Writing is quite often a solitary life. Writers sit in their office or bedroom with their laptop. They invent worlds and characters, while the real world with its real characters continues outside. But they are probably so wrapped up in those fictional worlds and characters that they don’t make the time to meet real people.

- Isolation like that can have a crushing effect on a lot of people. Some people thrive on it, but humans on the whole are a social bunch and need to interact with others. When that isn’t possible, it’s easy to feel that the walls are closing in.

- Lack of sleep, lack of exercise, lack of human contact, and lack of natural light are all factors that can develop into something much more serious.

- Since writing is so hard, it is very easy to get dispirited and to tell yourself that the whole project is hopeless. Especially when you get rejection slips from editors and harsh criticism from reviewers, your family and friends.

Nevertheless, there are lots of ways to beat depression. But most importantly: YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

“- Get in a routine. If you’re depressed, you need a routine. Depression can strip away the structure from your life. One day melts into the next. Setting a gentle daily schedule can help you get back on track.

- Set goals. When you're depressed, you may feel like you can't accomplish anything. That makes you feel worse about yourself. To push back, set daily goals for yourself. This can, for example, be that you are simply doing the dishes.

- Exercise. It temporarily boosts feel-good chemicals called endorphins. It may also have long-term benefits for people with depression. Regular exercise seems to encourage the brain to rewire itself in positive ways.

- Get enough sleep. Depression can make it hard to get enough shut-eye, and too little sleep can make depression worse. What can you do? Start by making some changes to your lifestyle. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day. Try not to nap. Take all the distractions out of your bedroom -- no computer and no TV.”

Funny to see that these people being so extra about seb are either youngsters or the older fanbase. I thought I'd be a lot more of his younger fans to be this immature but I see a ton of over 30 acting like assholes. I thought as you got older you became wiser not dumber than a rock, and I apologise to all rocks.

Oh yeah there was one person who I ended up blocked that had been leaving a whole load of posts on my account and she was literally a grown woman with kids who looked like they were my age. I’m not surprised by it at all though because my mum used to be an admin on a Robbie Williams fan site (don’t judge her) and she would always tell me these horror stories about the ridiculously aggressive and ridiculously petty fights these women aged 40+ would get into. Literally she messaged me this morning because one of the seb fan accounts she follows had posted a screencap of Seb’s comment and she was like “I hope you’re not reading the comments on these posts because they sound exactly like the people I had to deal with”.

Week 3- September 19

This week’s them was the effects of media messages. One of the topics from the textbook that really stood out to me was the Payne Fund Studies. These studies had the purpose of trying to find how movies affected the behaviours of children by monitoring their physical and psychological changes during different films (Sullivan, 2013, p. 31). This fear about the effects of movies stemmed from Hugo Munsterberg and Gustave Le Bon who worried that the dark themes in movies would translate into the people who watched them (Sullivan, 2013, p. 28). This immediately reminded me of the way video games are scrutinized in the same way today. There are a lot of people who believe that playing violent video games will make children violent, including my mom.

I have an older brother who really liked video games when he was growing up and all of his friends were playing games like Halo. The only problem was that Halo was rated M for mature due to the amount of violence in the game. For the longest time, my brother was told that he could not play M rated games even at friends’ houses -- which obviously didn’t stop him – what 12 year old boy would actually listen to their mom? This rule was made by my parents to protect him from what they thought would traumatize him and cause the violence of the games to translate into his life. When my parents realized that he was still playing these games at friends’ houses and there wasn’t a lot they could do about it, they made a new rule: no M rated games in the house. This rule was made to protect me from being an audience to these games -- games I wasn’t even playing. This was because my parents, like Hugo Munstenberg thought about movies, were convinced that I would absorb the violence in the video games and it would affect my well-being.

This also relates to Cooley, who was one of the first people to see a link between how peoples’ psyches and worldviews developed with their surroundings (feedback from peers, parents, etc.) and the messages they receive through media communications (Sullivan, 2013, p. 27). My parents were worried about the messages my brother and I were receiving through violent video games and how it would affect us as we grew up. While I think that they could have let the games into our house sooner (he wasn’t allowed to own them himself until after he graduated high school because I was still 13), I do agree that younger children shouldn’t see things as graphic as some of those games. Do I think the games actually make a whole generation of kids who grew up on them violent? No, but it is important for kids to be audiences to media intended for children in order to properly adapt to the world. 

We also learned about the four processes of audience involvement with media personae through the Brown article: transportation, parasocial interaction, identification, and worship.

We’re going to get embarrassing again but it’s for the sake of a good mark. 

When I was younger, I was really into the Percy Jackson book series. I was even a member of a popular role-playing website where users created their own characters within the universe and would post little stories that others would add on to from the perspective of their own character. From the reading, I would classify this as an example of transportation. Brown defines transportation as “the process of becoming wholly absorbed into a narrative during media consumption or through participation in a mediated event, which begins when media consumers think and feel like a person in a narrative world” (Brown, 2015, p. 274). 

I tried to find this website again so I could put a picture to demonstrate my point, but it seems like the website has been taken down. If I had found the website, I would have provided an example of the posts because they really do transport you into the narrative of Percy Jackson. Posts could easily be 10 pages long, filled with so much detail about the world and the books that people needed to experience transportation to write them. In order to make a new character, you had to fill out a character sheet and get it approved by one of the admins of the site. These character sheets were also extremely detailed and had a lot of backstory about the Gods taken directly from the books. I was a member of this site for at least 2 or 3 years and I would spend hours each day on it. I was able to place myself into my favourite narrative through the different characters I had created. To this day, I still know way too many details about the series and I even took Greek and Roman mythology as a course in first year of university.

Another example I have is for identification, which is “the process of confirming the perceived identity of a mediated person both during and after media consumption or through participation in a mediated event, which commences when media consumers begin to assume the identity of the persona by sharing or adopting the persona’s attitudes, values, beliefs, or behaviour” (Brown, 2015, p. 275). I can relate to this type of audience involvement because I sometimes find myself acting like certain characters after watching a lot of a show. As a specific example, I really enjoy the show Schitt’s Creek. My favourite character is Alexis. I think she’s funny and written really well. My family has pointed out that I already share some qualities with Alexis, just more toned down. But after I watch the show, I find myself acting more like her than I normally would. I’m more sarcastic and confident, and I take on some of her mannerisms (such as the way she smiles). 

I have also found myself seeing similarities even when I haven’t watched the show in the while. Certain things that she says, such as ‘love that journey for me’ or ‘I totally get that’ are things that I find myself saying almost daily. I have incorporated her sayings into my life and I don’t even notice when I say them anymore. Other times, I’ll say something to my boyfriend and he will actually call me Alexis because of how similar I sound to her.

This is an example of identification because through my media consumption of Schitt’s Creek, I have assumed the identity of Alexis, someone I have never met before and someone who probably isn’t the best person to model myself after.

Why the Best Super Bowl Commercials Were All Cars and Tech

Super Bowls used to mean Tom Brady hoisting another trophy along with ads of polar bears drinking Coke on not-yet-melting polar ice caps, that and the Budweiser Clydesdales. Now the most memorable – sorry, memorably good – commercials are cars and tech. Car ads have always been part of the 54 Super Bowls, but in the dotcom boom years “tech ad” meant money frittered away. Remember Pets.com? Agillon? Epidemic.com? All goners. Maybe automakers did a better job because there really are differences among cars. And the tech guys have learned from the money-wasting days at the turn of the century.

Here are the best car and tech ads of Super Bowl 54 (that’s LIV for traditionalists) along with some that didn’t click quite as well, and the best non-tech ad. We’re linking to ads from places (mostly, automaker sites on YouTube) that don’t have ads in front of them because why should you pay (with your time) to see an advertisement in order to see an ad?

The Best Ads: Hyundai Sonata, Jeep Gladiator

Hyundai Sonata Smaht Pahk. Two car ads stood out. The Hyundai Sonata spot for Smaht Pahk was the winner because it was funny, it made fun of a socio-economic group you can always make fun (people from Boston, especially since New England departed the playoffs early), and most of all because it is going to sell Hyundai Sonatas. The Sonata is the most important new car of 2020 (see our review), it is the Extreme Tech Car of the Year, and it’s loaded with standard safety features, virtually all of which are on the base, $26,000 Sonata SE. The top-line  Sonata Limited, $34,000, includes Remote Smart Parking Assist, now being called Smart Park. Hop out, press the keyfob, and the Sonata pahks itself at Hahvahd Yahd, and backs out when you return. If you have a narrow garage in Back Bay or Chahlston, you don’t have to squeeze in and out inside the garage.

Too many Super Bowl commercials are ad agency spitting matches using client money to prove who’s more clever, with less thought given to whether the ad sells the product. The “Smaht Pahk” ad will do just that: Get customers to consider Sonata, and realize a mainstream car includes important new technology.

Jeep / Groundhog Day. This is the other spot that rose above the rest. Bill Murray reprised the 1993 movie Groundhog Day, this time in a Jeep Gladiator, the truck of the year in several autowriter / magazine competitions. It’s funny, it’s nostalgic, and if you don’t know Jeep makes a pickup truck in Punk’n Metallic orange paint and the doors and top come off (you do it yourself), now you do.

The concept of Groundhog Day the movie is weatherman Bill Murray is caught in an endless time loop that restarts each day when he wakes at 6 am to Sonny and Cher’s I Got You Babe, and has to again cover Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. It’s faithfully recreated in the ad, except no Andie McDowell this time. And to Jeep’s good fortune, the 2020 Super Bowl was played on Feb. 2, Groundhog Day. Appreciating this spot probably helped if you’re old enough to remember the movie from when it was in theaters. But if not, you should, since it’s in the National Film Registry for being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Amazon Before Alexa. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi ponder what life was like before Amazon Alexa. The spot borders on slapstick: An 1800s upper-class woman in the parlor tells the maid, “Alexxa, turn the temperature down, two degrees,” the maid takes a log off the fire, tosses it through the window to the sound of shattering glass and a man’s muffled scream. A man in an 1800s city asks the newsboy, “Alex, what’s today’s news?” and he responds, “It doesn’t matter. It’s all fake.” Then in a 1970s Oval Office scene, a Nixon-esque voice commands, “Alicia, remind me to delete those tapes.” In the next room, an admin says loudly, “Yes, Mister President,” then softly, “I ain’t deletin’ …”

Conservatives are probably fuming if they conclude the “fake news” line makes fun of rather than echoes the current administration (hmm, who runs Amazon?), and liberals find it fair recompense for sitting through a patriotism-heavy, pre-game show that did conclude with a touching moment when four 100-year-old World War II veterans took part in the pre-game coin toss, led by Charles McGee, a pilot with the Tuskegee Airman that battled both the Germans and racism.

  Google / Loretta. An old man reminisces about his life with Loretta through old pictures Google calls up, along with a clip from their favorite movie, Casablanca. If there’s a “when they cry, they buy” ad, this is it. It’s going to make everybody wish their parents scanned or at least saved and ID’d their favorite photos for you to scan. Not in the commercial but important to know is that face recognition is getting so good – too good, in China – that the thing that used to hard to do, figuring out who that is in a 50-year-old photo, can now be done automagically.

Old Luxury (Going Away Party) / Genesis. Hyundai’s Genesis division rolled out its first SUV, the GV80, using young and hip Chrissy Teigen and John Legend as they make their escape from old people, oddly shaped dogs, and an old-world mansion into the GV80. From the staircase, she looks down and says, “To old luxury: You had a good run but now it’s time to choose you up a little bit … I give you young luxury.” Teigen then gestures to the open courtyard doors and points to the GV80 that – oops – hasn’t yet pulled up (“Where were you?” she asks driver Legend. “It was supposed to be a thing and you made it not a thing.”)

Never mind that Audi did essentially the same ad – “Old Luxury” (even the same name) – in a 2011 Super Bowl commercial. In this case, yuppie inmates inhabit a faux luxury prison (a mansion in LA) filled with affluent Boomers / Millennials. They unlock the cell bars and make their way toward a waiting car. A guard releases the dogs (showy hounds). When that doesn’t work, he’s ordered, “Hit ’em with the Kenny G,” and as Songbird plays, some refuse to leave while others do. Two escapees make it the courtyard, a Mercedes pulls up (you see the tri-star hood emblem) and one says, “Lancaster, no, it’s a trap,” and Lancaster replies, “Nonsense, my father owned one.”

But the theme works, and has for ages, going back at least to 1988 and “Not your father’s Oldsmobile.” Actually, it doesn’t always work. America’s oldest car brand, the brainchild of Barney Olds, was killed off in 2004.

The Other Car / Tech Ads

Porsche did a creditable job with “The Heist”: The Porsche Taycan EV sports car is spirited out of the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. Once the heist is discovered, the guards argue / squabble over who drives which museum Porsche to track down the Taycan. That gives the viewer a chance to appreciate Porsche’s storied history and possibly begin to realize the Taycan is a continuation of Porsche history, not a bunch of greenies gone mad. The voices were a bit muffled, especially if you were watching the game with noisy friends, and works much better played on a PC with closed captions running.

A Toyota Highlander ad showed the car does indeed have a lot of room as the driver – 20 years ago this would have been a soccer mom commercial – picks up various people in comic distress from various scenes, ending with her son.

A third Hyundai group (Hyundai, Genesis, Kia) ad was for the upcoming Kia Seltos but more about the inspirational story of Oakland Raiders rookie Josh Jacobs and hard times growing up. It left some people wonder what Seltos is. Answer: The same platform as the subcompact and well-established Hyundai Kona, a bit roomier inside, and shipping this quarter.

T-Mobile and Verizon touted 5G service, which is still a ways off. T-Mobile used Anthony Anderson’s real-life, sassy, talky mom. Verizon essentially said that without 5G, emergency responders won’t get their job done as well.

Microsoft, whose Surface tablets are universally used (mandated) by the NFL, told the story of Katie Sowers, an assistant coach of the San Francisco 49ers. It’s a true story of perseverance and success, but the story was already being told in the two-week run-up to the Big Game.

Audi had an eTron Sportback spot run late in the evening after the kids were in bed, so they missed Maisie Williams singing “Let It Go” from Frozen.

GMC touted the rebirth of the Hummer as an EV in an ad with LeBron James. The Hummer is a ways off, so maybe it was okay to be low-key and laid back. This was not a call to action for hand-raisers.

Scout, the golden retriever owned by Weathertech founder David MacNeil, had his cancer cured at the University of Wisconsin vet school. MacNeil took a 30-second spot lauding the Badger vets and encouraging donations.  Wisconsin hasn’t gotten this much PR since this mentions by Wisconsin alum / Wall Street Journal sportswriter Jason Gay in his column. Nice touch – who doesn’t like retreivers? – and if MacNeil wants to spend six mil in hopes of getting at least that much in donations to Wisconsin, more power to him. Pets cure a lot of human ailments by being there for you.

Tom Brady made it to the Super Bowl (as one of the game’s 100 best players of the NFL’s 100 years) and also was a spokesmodel for a Hulu spot. Amazon promoted its drama Hunters. Quibi pushed its short video service that launches this spring (nothing more challenging than 10 minutes) and hopes you’ll start saying “I’ll be there in a Quibi.”

Best in Show (Non-Tech): Lil Nas X

The hands-down winner among non-tech or car ads was the Wild West dance moves showdown between Lil Nas X and Sam Elliott with Old Town Road playing in the background. (The guy strumming the guitar at the end was Billy Ray Cyrus.) Doritos footed the bill and reaped the rewards, as long as remembers remember it was Doritos and not Bud Light or Axe body wash.
