"When you're all dressed up And no place to go.." Winnpeg Tribune. September 20, 1943. Page 11. ---- WITH just the heel of a box of shells and with only one of those AA cards for the gas, there's many a duck hunter who will do his duck hunting in front of the fireplace this year. The season opened in Manitoba this morning and quite a few, like Tom Lamont, of 183 Oakdean blvd., who posed for the picture above, must be satisfied with memories of trips to the marshes. The ducks haven't got it all their own way, however, for plenty of hunters had some shells left over from last year. As for new shells, even farmers, trappers and prospectors need a permit to buy them.

:: Posting this here because two items are from right here in Winnipeg!  The Pen is from Tiny Feast; a stationary store down the street from where I work. While the Hat is from North Flag; a local clothing company.
Fun fact: we do all the printing for North Flags apparel (but we don’t do embroidery + didn’t do the Hats).

“Young Store Clerk Stops Alleged Fraud,” Toronto Star. October 26, 1931. Page 8. ---- Manitoba Compensation Board’s Name on Cheques Offered Here --- S. STEIN ARRESTED ---- Several Toronto Storekeepers Said To Have Been Victimized ---- The keen memory for faces of Robert Williamson, 21-year-old employee of Imrie Bros., 274 Yonge St., and his shrewdness in following a man who tried to pass a cheque of the Workmen’s Compensation Board of Manitoba on him in Imries’ store Saturday night, led to the arrest of Samuel Stein, alias Harrison, 29, of Toronto, and uncovered for the police one of the most serious alleged fraud and forgery attempts in years. The total is said to be over $2,500 in Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver, and New Westminster.
Stein is alleged to have walked into Imrie Bros., 274 Yonge St., Saturday night and presented a cheque. Taking a look at the man Williamson, who had been working in the other store of Imries’, 140 Yonge St., in the afternoon, recognized him as the same person who had cashed a similar cheque for $79 when he bought $24 worth of goods. Williamson also recognized the man as the same person whom he had seen in a barber shop and leaving another store on Yonge St. in the afternoon.
Williamson became suspicious. He figured that one person could not have so many compensation cheques. He refused to cash the paper. The man left the store and Williamson trailed him on Yonge St.
He looked for a constable and could fine none. Williamson, keeping his man in sight, asked two youths to run over to Dundas St. W. station to get the police. The lads met Constable Winters (260) and Stock (362) and led them to Williamson.
The suspected man was standing outside the London Luggage Store, 251 Yonge St. He went in and, as the police watched, he produced another yellow workmen’s compensation cheque and was trying to cash it when the constables walked in on him.
The officers took the man back to Imrie Bros.’and Williamson identfied him as the man who tried to cash a cheque on him and also as the same person seen earlier in the afternoon at the other store.
The man stated he was a cattle buyer, but when he realized the police would not believe him, suddenly said: ‘You got me; call the wagon.’
When he was searchd at Dundas station, seventeen cheques of the Manitoba Workmen’s Compensation Board, all neatly typed out for various sums to the total amount of $831.78, were taken from the prisoner.
The cheques were specified as for injuries sustained at Massey-Harris. Particulars of injury read, ‘left wrist cut.’ Stein had a scar on his left wrist and admitted in his signed statement to the police he showed the cut on his wrist as a scheme to deceive the shops where he passed cheques.
‘I have been three days in Toronto from Winnipeg,’ he is said to have stated after telling police where had passed seven cheques in Toronto. He is also reported to have stated he had passed many more here, although he claimed he could not remember the stores.
‘I stole a pad of these cheques from the Workmen’s Compensation Board in Winnpeg three months ago. I cashed between $800 and $1,000 worth in Winnipeg and then went on to Vancouver and was in New Westminster, where I cashed scores of them,’ the man’s reported confession stated.
Police, on Stein’s own statement, believed he cashed many cheques here and would like to hear from storekeepers that have been victimized. Stein also had a list of twenty stores he planned to viist.
‘He had too many cheques to suit me,’ stated Williamson when interviewed by The Star. ‘I saw him after he had been in our store at 140 Yonge St. in a barber sop and he was talking about cheques. I did not like the looks of him.’
Stein, the police learned later, had a confederate with him who sat outside in an automobile and who drove away when he saw Stein being taken by the police.

“Gets Penitentiary For Church Thefts,” Toronto Star. October 30, 1931. Page 1. ---- Sam Stein Stole Vouchers From Compensation Board ---- Three years in Kingston penitentiary was the sentence meted out to Sam Stein, convicted in police court to-day of stealing workmen’s compensation board cheques and cashing them for goods and money in Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Toronto.
Detectives Johns and Taylor said the cheques were stolen in Winnipeg and that $2,000 worth were cashed in Vancouver, $1,000 in Winnipeg and about $1,200 in Toronto. When arrested, Stein had cheques to a value of $1,000 all made out for exchange, in his possession.
[AL: Samuel Stein was 29 at time of conviction, born in Toronto, a ‘Canadian Jew’ according to the prison, and unemployed. He had been in Kingston Penitentiary twice before, dating back to 1922 and 1926, and in the reformatory as well on short terms. Stein was convict #2405 at Kingston Penitentiary and was initially assigned to work in the mail bags. He had contracted a blood-born venereal disease in the Toronto jail while awaiting trial, and it got so bad he was quickly admitted to the prison hospital, given a course of twelve injections, and during the last one, in November 1931, he was “knocked unconscious...I was just as close to death as I could come.” He received no further injections, demanding in fact that the doctor give no more, but reported that he had “a very painful left side” - soon after, sometime in January, he had a succession of minor heart attacks. Stein was anxious to be treated by an outside doctor, but this was ignored and he was left to recover and then put back to work. He joined the October 1932 riot, hoping it would bring attention to his case. Indeed, he complained afterwards that “nothing was done for me for a year, and now they are all over me, bothering me with efforts to care.” Dr. Platt, the prison doctor, reiterated in a report on December 1, 1932 that Stein had repeatedly refused treatment, until he started to cough up blood. It is possible he had tuberculosis, but this was not confirmed. Stein was put on light duty, and eventually made a messenger between the maximum security range in the Prison for Women and the main cell block, carrying messages to the Communists held there. he testified in mid-1933 in the trials of the rioters, giving evidence of their peaceful intent and organization. In June 1933 he was readmitted to the hospital, his VD coming back, and he apparently tried to hang himself, though several officers and inmates managed to cut him down. The Superintendent of Penitentiaries believed “this act was intended to embarrass the officers and not actually derived from a desire to suicide.” Somehow this story got out, and the Toronto Globe attacked the prison system for allowing conditions so bad a man would be driven to suicide. Stein continued to be on light, outdoors duty until released in June 1934.]

Thank you yo much to Viktoria Blythe for making this amazing vid on occasion of Keanu’s 53rd birthday!
Viktoria Blythe
3 hrs
🎉💛🎉This day has finally come, the 2nd of Septemeber, Keanu’s 53rd Birthday. I must admit that I’ve been waiting eagerly for it. It’s a special occassion for Keanu but also for his wonderful fans, a huge community of his great admirers, who are preparing wishes, edits, videos dedicated to him. This year, just like I did in 2016, I’ve created a special video edit. I combined one of my favorite clips from his films, interviews, movie premieres with a very nice song. I worked on it  Thanks for a couple of days, especially trying my best to find the most beautiful excerpts from the movies in which he has appeared in recent years. I hope that Keanu is spending this big day in the great company of his close friends and family. I’ve included birthday wishes in the video but I want to write them again, here, in a longer form. Those ones who have been following me for some time, probably have already managed to notice how important Keanu is to me, how much I admire him for his hard work, constant dedication to his craft, huge effort he puts, not only into playing his roles, but also in every single project that he decides to implement. I would like to wish him, first of all, great health becasue, just like all his fans, I want to see many more movies with him, loads of more incredible stories told by Keanu, always in such an accurate, precise way.  I hope that he’ll continue to do what he truly loves, what makes him happy and never stop amazing us with his incomparable performances, magnificent interpretations of roles. He’s a method actor, a true artist, who chooses unconventional, remarkable productions, always wants to provide his enormous, supportive audience entertainment and cares about their opinions. I want him to still portray phenomenal characters, have many artistic opportunities, achieve his goals successfully and be more appreciated for his talent, unique skills, commitments which he always makes by preparing so diligently to roles, doing a lot of extra things to picture a gripping story super perfectly, absolutely authentically. I can’t wait to see him in ‘Replicas’, ‘Siberia’ and ‘Destination Wedding’. However, maybe it might sound exaggeratedly but undoubtedly not in the case of Keanu, I’m already entirely sure that these films are going to be really engrossing cause Keanu never fails to enchant me by his beautiful, movie creations. I also would love to wish Keanu to have plenty of good friends- kind, warm people who will be able to fully respect him, his privacy, encourage him and help him whenever he needs it. I want him to find soulmates, lead a happy, fortunate life, to experience only cheery moments. I would like to wish his prodigious company to develop. I hope that they will create lots of new fantastic motorbikes, expand the activity into Europe. I hope that Keanu will continue to ride on his marvelous, two-wheeled machine and travel a lot, visit lots of terrific places, but also have time only for himself, to read, reflect, as he once said in an interview. Hopefully Keanu will always be such a genuine, humble, down-to-earth, grounded guy and the movie industry will eventually recognize him and he will be honored with some well-deserved awards but even without them, for me he will still be a gifted, outstanding, one of a kind actor.  His choreography, movie fights are always breathtaking, perfectly acted, with attention to every detail. I hope that we’ll see many of them in the near future and that he will have numerous possibilities to show his extraordinary abilities in a variety of movies. I wish him to work with creative people and keep on exploring, learning, getting to know new things thanks to starring in different, splendid productions. I want Keanu to never change and continue to be such a precious person, an impressive actor and especial artist for the next 53 years. Happy Birthday, Keanu! 🎉🌟🎉#happybirthday #keanureeves #53years #myvideo #edit #specialday #birthday #2ndSeptember #2017 #wishes #birthdaywishes #dedicatedfan #thankyou
