I had been searching for the perfect jumper dress for months before I found this one. I searched for a white top to wear with the dress for a little bit less time. And then I decided I wanted to wear this rose necklace with it (which is still available, by the way). Once I put it all on I realized that I looked like a Disney character but I couldn't remember which one. I was never into Disney princesses growing up so I'm not super familiar with what they wear. But then it hit me that it's Belle from Beauty and the Beast, and the rose necklace was actually the perfect choice! I paired this outfit with my incredible @crochetandclaycat earrings. Thanks to @wildflowers.in.her.hair I have been embracing dressing up for no reason except joy, and I love it! There was no place more perfect to take outfit photos than on the couch where I spend most of everyday, because chronic illness life. So a while ago I saw a post with the coolest vintage tshirt and I instantly fell in love and decided I needed it in my life:

I searched REALLY hard for the original copyright holder to see if I could buy one, including digging up the original source of the image (the Lesbian Herstory Archives) to find out that WMP stands for WomanMade Products, and eventually stumbled across a feminist bookstore with the same name. I called expecting to get the runaround for a week and then be told they couldn’t find the creator, but she actually picked up the phone herself! Becky Bly has been in business since 1976, created this design in the early 80s, and said as long as I wasn’t selling it, I could reproduce it!

I ended up having to redraw it by hand because the original scan was skewed (there was much wailing) and got to work. Ignore how sloppy the pattern is, I fixed most of it while stitching.

I then immediately put it down and forgot about it for weeks until I realized Pride was right around the corner and frantically picked it back up. I took it with me to a roller derby match to work on during the breaks and ladies, if you haul out embroidery that says “dyke” on it at roller derby, you will IMMEDIATELY have lots of queer women talking to you. I then forgot about it for another week and a half until I realized Pride was in two days and started sewing as fast as I possibly could, bruising my finger where I braced the needle. I finished it at 1:30 am the night before Pride:

This is the best thing I’ve ever done. I am obsessed with it and keep staring at it. Everyone at Pride thought it was amazing and I got SO many compliments that went straight to my head. One person at temple asked if they could commission me to make one for them and I got to say “sorry :( I only got permission to make it for myself :(” instead of “the amount of labor that went into this is going to COST you, I don’t think you want to pay that much.”

"easily clockable as female, people seem to think that is inherently feminine" exactly, you have described sexism. they are wrong, but culturally supported. feminine=female is gender in action, but as feminists we understand that femininity is a perceived value meant to uphold the gender hierarchy for the benefit of men.

so I'm not sure why you think "we don't consider that gnc" or who we is. I'm also not one that thinks being completely gnc is possible, since gender is not something that describes personal presentation only. Gender is projected onto you by the culture you're in. In that sense, being gnc or being perceived as gnc is not necessarily that important in a feminist sense, imo. I mean, it is and it isn't. I think not shaving is a great way to connect with your natural state, I think rejecting make up is good for your mental health and helps normalize the natural female face. I think in a small way, you help undermine the industries when you don't buy into them.

I guess my overall point is I hope you're practicing these things for more reasons than just being recognized as gnc by other people, that you see the value of pushing back on the feminized ideal of the public female form regardless of how "passable" (I guess?) as gnc you are.

Final Exam

Progress Photographs

I've changed a lot this semester and I thought a butterfly's transformation mirrored my own. My progress photos include cutting the kami, the traditional name for origami paper, and folding it. This model was unconventional because it begins with a 2:1 rectangle rather than a square. I practiced this model multiple times with printer paper before folding the final model with the patterned paper. I would say the medium of this artwork is photography. I pursued a picture of something in nature but I wanted to put my own twist on it. Nature has many transformational properties but the origami butterfly represents something manmade. Nature represents the environment you operate in while the butterfly is something that I have made myself into (womanmade in this case). In preparation for this photo, I experimented with lighting by taking photos at different times of the day. For the final photo, I chose the soft light of the morning; this photo was taken at about 10:00 AM. I enjoyed this final project. This last sprint of the semester has been hectic, but taking time for this project was refreshing. Slowing down to practice origami and preparing the lighting was therapeutic. I am grateful for the mind space this final project provided me. Being human means losing yourself and hopefully finding your essence as many times as needed through reminders of what you have molded yourself to be.
