Polish paper cutouts
From a blog entry by Ethnographic Museum of Warsaw, translated by me. The pictures mostly added by me, from various sources, all linked below. The cutout instructions at the end are also by the Ethnographic Museum of Warsaw.
People usually sat down to create paper works of art before Easter and Christmas. They were not created only to decorate the interiors of houses - people believed in the magical power of cut-outs.
Polish cutouts are very diverse. Łowicz cutouts, sometimes called naklejanki („stickers”) are probably the most popular in our country. You will find them on many folk gadgets. They are multi-colored, often round, depict floral and animal motifs, or situations from the everyday life of the village (cutout of this type is called a kodra; trans. note: other common types are gwiozda and tasiemka). The characteristic rooster from Łowicz consists of several layers of cut-outs glued on top of each other and thanks to that it gains depth and catches the eye.

Have you ever heard of Rawa cutouts? They are usually one-color, vertical, and their upper part is topped with two symmetrical roosters - we call them rózgi (singular: rózga). Among the paper works from the vicinity of Tomaszów Mazowiecki, you will also find those created in the form of abstract patterns in the shape of symmetrical squares and circles.

The area around Puszcza Biała and Puszcza Zielona is, in turn, a place where Kurpie cutouts are made. The so-called leluja is characteristic of this region. In these cut-outs you can see the base from which a complex, decorative tree-like form grows. On the base we often find symmetrically arranged birds or a genre scene. In Kurpie, gwiazdy are also created, i.e. round cut-outs with small, densely dotted geometric patterns.

These are not all types of Polish cutouts! We also distinguish Opoczno squares with cut-outs of plants or animals brought to perfection, Sieradz cut-outs combining various Polish traditions in this field, or openwork squares in Lublin with cut-outs resembling arrows.

It takes precision, patience and skill to create them all, but remember – practice makes perfect!
For those who’d like to practice with some simpler patterns the Ethnographic Museum offers five instruction sheets with cutouts from different regions. They’re in Polish but pretty easy to follow either way.

Marion Eichmann. Przyjemne, kolorowe odkrycie. Utalentowana Niemiecka Matka Marion od Wycinanek. Łatwo zapamiętać to nazwisko (podobno pokrewieństwa ze słynnym Eichmannem brak). Sight. Seeing Bundestag. Jaką ona wykonała pracę tym nożykiem! Architektoniczno-graficzna wyobraźnia.
Zachęcam odwiedzić jej stronę, doświadczenie bardzo satysfakcjonujące oczy.

How about 13 and 18 for the Hetalia Asks? Thanks 8)
13. Any cultural things you'd like to see discussed in Hetalia?
Hmm Lithuania and basketball would be entertaining but I think what would be fascinating particularly is something discussing the strengthening and solidifying the lithuanian identity in response to the harsh reprecussions enacted upon the nation as punishment for the January uprising of 1863.
I think it would be cool with Feliks to go into depth into polish craft such as pottery, wycinanki, pająki, and pisanki
Seriously tell me Feliks wouldn't be fascinated by pająki

18. Favorite siblings dynamic?
The baltics I mean I love seeing how a dynamic like theirs is formed through shared hardship rather than through blood. It's powerful in that way. In an odd twist it seems like Ivan's quest for his own family of sorts or friendship or whatever he deludes himself into believing it is, created a strong bond among the Baltics in opposition to him.
Liet's like that eldest sibling that feels like they have the weight of the world on their shoulders and cares so deeply that he can be overbearing. Raivis is young, insightful, and is still finding his potential. Eduard is the voice of reason and the glue that holds them together.

tournament II submissions
heyyyy hi hello guys. the first tournament being behind us i have calmed down a little i'm not mad i'm just disappointed and having turned out to be such an amazing fun...
without further ado, i present to you two submission forms: one for the artworks for the second tournament, the other for your ideas for minigames
you have until November 19th, 23:59 (11:59 pm) Polish time to submit the artworks. the minigame form will remain open for the whole duration of the tournament.
in the meantime, i have three minigames queued for you, so stay vigilant!
some rules for submissions under the cut:
✯ the artist must be either polish by nationality/citizenship or have dedicated their artistic career to poland-related subjects
✯ preferred forms of art pieces: - paintings - drawings - sculptures - installations - collages, etc etc (visual static forms)
✯ we shall see about applied arts and industrial design, idk if i will accept all submissions from this category or if i'll have to narrow it down somehow
✯ traditional folk art (e.g. wycinanki łowickie, wydmuszki) will be accepted as a group of artworks, not individual pieces - please write "folk art from [region of Poland]" in response to the question about the author
✯ photography, poetry, music and films will not be accepted in this tournament, sorry!
✯ also no architecture. unless you manage to convince me i guess, shoot your shot if you have something spectacular
✯ please don't submit the same thing twice!
✯ propaganda can be in english or in polish
✯ paintings included in the first minigame qualified automatically, so don't submit those
✯ stańczyk is banned, and other matejko paintings are on thin ice
✯ i hope to get like, 64 contestants ideally? if there will be much more / y'all submit too many art pieces by the same author, i will have to organise some sort of preliminations

Having fun with the radial symmetry tool.
[ID: two illustrations the first is of wycinanki like flowers surrounding a star. The second is of a pale woman with brown eyes, wavy black hair, and brown glasses wearing a red dress with a lace neckline and a brown sweater. Behind he is a radial pattern of stars, ribbon, birds, flowers, and hearts.]
alternative versions of the flower one under cut:
