I'm kinda curious: what did you think of the "Alien X-Tinction" special and the appearances by the older versions of Ben? I really liked how they put an emphasis on Alien Force's version of Ben, personally, since that's my favorite version of the character.

I actually wrote a review/analysis of Alien X-Tinction back when it first aired, but I will repeat that one of my favorite things about the writing was that they remained faithful to the original writing of the character throughout those parts of the series. AF and UA Ben were particularly apparent to me in the slight differences in the way they wrote his personality.

Anyway I loved the appearances of the older versions of Ben and this was probably my fave scene <3 how can you not love the return of this attitude

In a world where Alien X-tinction had a much bigger budget and the alternative Bens (and Gwen) had an extra alien each, I’d have them use:

OS Ben: OG Heatblast and Wildmutt

Seeing that this special was used to show off aliens that didn’t get to appear otherwise, Wildmutt makes the most sense to reappear. At first I thought Cannonbolt, but I’d rather not have both of OS Ben’s aliens overlap with Reboot Ben’s.

AF Ben: Chromastone, Big Chill, and Echo Echo

I’m actually satisfied with the two aliens AF Ben uses, but I think letting him use Echo Echo for a moment would be the perfect set up for him to be outdone by…

UA Ben: AmpFibian and Ultimate Echo Echo

I absolutely get not using an Ultimate form do to potential complications. However you can’t really separate the Ultimate gimmick from Ultimate Alien. Plus I like the potential interactions that showing off the evolution function could bring. And personally Ultimate Echo Echo is my favorite Ultimate Form.

OV Ben: Bloxx and Feedback

While I could also see someone like Gravattack or Astrodactyl, I simply think Feedback is the best alien to represent Omniverse.

Gwen 10: Ripjaws and Diamondhead

Diamondhead is the only transformation to appear in both the Original Series episode and the Gwen 10 we see in Omniverse. Making it her most iconic alien in my opinion.

The Ben 10 Reboot specials are like the embodiment of almost being interesting. There’s these intentional nuggets of potential but they fall so flat in execution. Alien X-tinction is the worst offender.

Theres a meta to be written about how the viciousness of Darius's betrayal and the episode "Turtle X-tinction" fundementally changed Cody as a person and if he hadn't had the turtles and splinter until Serling could be rebuilt he would have gone on such a spiral. I guess cody was supposed to be like 15 at thebegining of FF but he always read as like, 12-13 tops to me not gonna lie. Makes it worse kinda.

Letting an aged man hurt like this without making a joke about it is good to see <3

Hm. I kinda like this angle with Ben's frustration. He feels like he's not living up to his full potential as a hero because he always has Gwen and Max helping him. It's different from when Ben would get cocky in the OG, and I think it's an interesting point, too :p This blatantly isn't about being a hero, it's about the thrill, which is something that ten-year-old Ben consistently struggled with

I definitely don't like how the fights are animated? It feels... slow. And I get part of that is to build up suspense/show of Alien X's abilities, since this show is aimed at a younger audience who wouldn't be familiar with the Classic continuity, but still :/ I don't like the flat camera angles and the hits don't have a lot of weight to them

Love that Alien X is killing off Ben's, though — something Eon was always too pussy to do

I love villains who are obsessed with Ben Killing him, hunting him down, whatever. Watching villains shove aside whatever or whoever gets in their way to pursue Ben with single-minded fervor always hits good.

This fight between Ben and Alien X, up until he loses the Omnitrix, is probably my favorite fight in the special. Alien X was at his coolest and Ben really gave it his all, no matter how badly he got beat in return.

Okay, just finished it. Final thoughts? It was really cute. Is it good enough to get me to watch the rest of the reboot? No. It's definitely not as hype as some of UAF/OV's high points, probably in part because I still can't get into the art style and also because the fight scenes just aren't as good.

It had pretty good pacing! I was surprised by that, I thought 45 minutes was gonna be too short, but it ended up feeling right. (Also, I'm upset to say that Max's voice grew on me. Gwen is on thin ice.)

You can tell that this was made with a lot of love, both for the characters and for Ben 10 as a whole. It really does feel like a love letter to the fandom, and for that, it was a good watch :)

Final score: 7/10, not NEARLY as bad as I was expecting, worth a rewatch <3

I’ve begun the deep dive into Claremont’s X-men for the first time, and I was wondering since it’s harder to discern for older titles or if they even operated on a coordinated synergy like tie ins now - are there any relevant, or good for their own sake , x titles of the Claremont era that help round out the story ala X-men now and say, Immortal X-men?

Good for you! Everyone should read the Claremont run.

To answer your question, absolutely and 100% yes.

I would describe the Claremont run as a pioneer of the kind of cross-book coordination that would become absolutely hegemonic within comics thanks to its success here. So not only was there the flagship Uncanny X-Men book, but there was also New Mutants, X-Factor, Excalibur, and Wolverine, which frequently crossed-over and referenced one another - creating a cohesive "X-line" of books for the first time.

Chris Claremont depended heavily on his editors Ann Nocenti and Louise "Weezy" Simonson née Jones to make sure the X-line coherent and internally consistent. (This was back in the day when Marvel was stricter about things happening in real-time rather than the looser sliding timescale, so you'd have issues where Wolverine wouldn't be in an issue of X-Men because he was in Japan or Madripoor at the time and hadn't gotten back yet - and it was the job of the editor to keep track of all these movements.)

Chris and Ann then recommended Louise Simonson to replace Bob Layton on X-Factor, and then eventually take over for Claremont on New Mutants as well when he found he had bitten off more than he could chew writing-wise. Meanwhile Ann Nocenti would write several X-Men mini-series and some absolutely crucial backup stories in Classic X-Men. Last but by no means least, Louise's husband Walt would be added to the group as both writer and artist for projects like X-Men and the New Teen Titans, X-Factor, and cross-over issues.

Moreover, because Chris Claremont was a rather social and collaborative type who liked working with his friends, he liked to include their characters in his books and cross-over with their books. Thus, Ann Nocenti's Longshot became a member of the X-Men when the Longshot ongoing fell through, Louise's Power Pack would become frequent guest-stars in X-books and X-events, as would Walt's Thor cast.

Indeed, the Claremont Run's very structure owes an enormous amount to Louise Simonson, who came up for the idea of turning the Mutant Massacre into an X-line crossover, a feat she would repeat with Fall of the Mutants, Inferno, and X-Tinction Agenda. These events formed the spine of the Claremont run and arguably the height of its creative and then commercial success.

The X-line would not be this cohesive again until HOXPOX and the creation of the X-writer's room/Slack.

Got a little too ill about Serling and Cody and the episode Turtle X-Tinction in which Cody almost dies, Starlee almost dies, and Serling does in fact freakin die. I kept thinking about what Fast Forward tells us about robots in society, and about how much Serling cares for this poor kid, how much he does to keep Cody safe, including sacrificing his own life. I kept thinking about how this episode happens on Cody’s birthday.

So I wrote almost three thousand words about it last night!

Warnings: angst due to temporary character death (but he gets better dw!), Cody experiencing some terrible terrible emotions, the author rambling about the world-building of Fast Forward.

Summary: For a horrible, infinitely long moment, Serling is dead.

My Ranking of Storm's Costumes (1/2)

i woke up, chose violence, and decided to rank all of ororo monroe's costumes based entirely on my opinions. i am not including casual clothing, but i will be including alternate versions of storm. this is purly my opinions, and I dont mean any disrespect to the designers of these costumes.

#36: Schoolgirl Storm

As much as I love Emma Frost, I have no idea why she put Storm in this. While it does fit with her iconic color scheme, so many elements feel out of place, like the Xs under the knees, or the platform boots.

#35: Gray Storm

Gray and...red? One of my big problems with a lot of Storm's later costumes is making red one of her central characters. I am a firm believer that red should stay as one of Storm's accent colors, similar to how it was used on her original costume. But this much red? And this weird shade of gray?

#34: Trainee Storm

It's just the classic X-Uniform, but on Storm. I hate the two little belts on her right leg.

#33: Age of Apocalypse Storm

While I don't think that this costume is amazing, I am clouded by nostalgia for AoA. The boots and eye tattoo are great though.

#32: Purple Bodysuit Storm

I like purple. It's my favorite color. But this feels... wrong on Storm? The random pop of red on the cape really takes me out, and the metal detailing seems like something that would work better on one of Polaris's costumes (which would be SO COOL.)

#31: Ultimate Storm

I think this is fine, but the low ponytail and thigh cutouts feel out of place. There is an entry later on in the list (spoiler: it's number one) that does this ensemble much better.

#30: Midnight Suns Storm

It's alright, changing Storm to fit more with the Midnight Suns aesthetic. Eh.

#29: Anime Storm

There is just a little too much on her outfit, and the purple lipstick seems out of place, but I am obsessed with her cape. Her hair is giving The Last Stand, which pains me.

#28: The Twelve Storm

The white belt puts weird emphasis on her hip area, and her silhouette just makes me think of footie pajamas.

#27: X-Tinction Agenda Storm

I don't like what the outfit symbolizes, but she just pulls off the look so well.

#26: Long Ass Hair Storm

Her hair is SO LONG and SO FLOWY. I like the outfit as a whole, but the strappy bits on the cape and the white lining the belt and neck throws me off.

#25: X-Treme Storm

Again, it's a lot of red, but the placement of yellow is great. I have a lot of nostalgia for this era, which most likely clouds my judgement.

#24: Pheonix Storm

This is from What If, and is such a cool look for Storm. My biggest problem is how the Phoenix logo is only used on her crown, and nowhere else on her look.

#23: Gold Storm

But what if she had long sleeves and no detailing?

#22: Inhumans VS X-Men Storm

Love the look, hate the belt. Tan? TAN? I think the look could have been slightly improved by adding a little black to her pants.

#21: Miniseries Storm

I think i would enjoy this look if her hair was in a ponytail, with the two long strands coming out of the front. I also think that the purple here works much better than #32, using it as an accent that draws your eye to her limbs.

#20: Stormcaster Storm

The look feels more classic Thor than storm has ever looked, and I love it so much. The one thing I don't like is the gloves she wears, but that is a small gripe.

#19: Miniseries Storm (Longer Hair)

The same as two above this, but with longer hair. The look works so well without the cape, and Storm's crown brings any look together.

#18: Outback Storm (Black Version)

This feels like quintessential Storm, with a simple black and yellow color scheme. The black gloves on top of a black bodysuit should feel like a bit much, but I just love it.

#17: Outback Storm (White Version)

Two words: gender envy. The placement of the yellow, the black lining of the cape, everything is AMAZING. I prefer this version over the all black version purely due to Storm's amazing hair.

#16: Sins of Sinister Storm

I love how this look alludes so much to Magneto, and the gladiator style fits storm so well. I am a huge fan of her cape, with it's white lining and dark exterior. The small detail of giving her classic lightning earrings a new paint job just makes me so happy.

#15: Evolution Storm

While I know that heels may not be practical, but I think it only shows how powerful she is - she's kicking ass while wearing giant heels. I have so much love for evolution, and as previously stated, I am a big fan of bright cape linings.

#14: Alpha Team Storm

THIS. IS. THE. BEST. HER. CROWN. HAS. EVER. LOOKED. The baggy thigh highs and yellow lining on the leotard is great.

#13: Amalgam Storm

While it is just her wearing Wonder Woman's outfit, that's not necessarily a bad thing. She just looks cool.

#12: Early Nineties Storm

Is it black? Is it white? Is it just the dress meme? Is it iconic? Was she my lesbian awakening?

YES.

#11: Blue Bloodstorm

I love Bloodstorm so much, and the black and blue detailing over the dark gray outfit really brings the whole look together. The use of asymmetry is really clever, with the single earring and lopsided belt.

#10: Hellfire Gala Storm

The CAPE. The HAIR. The EARRING LIGHTING THINGIE. My favorite detail is the big ass shoulder pads, giving her a much more commanding presence that is fitting for the voice of Sol.

#9: Pyramid X Storm

While this look has never appeared in comics, I just think the whole design is so different for Storm and so eerie. The outfit is just a little bit different enough from her classic look to where she feels a little scary, which fits perfectly with this character.

#8: Goddess of Thunder Storm

Why aren't there more X-Men and Thor crossovers? While I don't always like Storm in blue, this beautiful cerulean cape looks amazing. The giant gloves, boots, and shoulder pads really emphasize parts of her body.

#7: Age of X-Man Storm

I don't know enough about Kenyan clothing to say if this is accurate, but the whole outfit just makes me wonder why we haven't seen Storm in more orange shades. I love her ballet flats, and her cape pairs so well with the colors of her dress.
