XueSang: - How I feel about and why (Love, hate, don’t care) Now this one is interesting, because i haven't really thought of it but you've just put two characters I really really love together and now my multishipper brain went: LOVE IT.

I said in the sangcheng ask too, but I cannot find myself a Huaisang pairing. I feel like no one's perfect enough for him.

Also I tried to think about how it would work and my brain froze at adorable genius mastermind and sexy villain pairing. sooo yeahh xD

Xue Yang is bored. He feels it stretch languidly through his limbs, burning like poison and urging him out of his bedchamber and towards more exciting prospects. Nowadays, “more exciting prospects” tend to be named Nie Huaisang.

He’s been with the Nie Sect since Nie Huaisang had spirited him away from Jin Guangyao’s grasp during one of many cultivation conferences. Xue Yang hadn’t known what his motivations were and he hadn’t cared enough to ask; he had known his time with Jin Guangyao was about to come to an end, and he’d not wanted to stick around to find out how bloody that end would be.

The Nie Sect isn’t what he’d expected it to be. The young, frazzled sect leader already earning himself a reputation isn’t what he’d expected him to be. There’s something in his eyes that Xue Yang recognizes, a sharpness that betrays his intellect, a sadness that mirrors something Xue Yang had long buried and tried to forget.

He finds Huaisang alone, sitting at his desk and looking down like he’s lost, but Xue Yang doesn’t miss the attentive look in his eyes as they skim over the characters.

Xue Yang flashes him a sharp grin and asks, in the tone of an excitable child looking for candy, “Do you have anyone you need me to kill?”

I enjoyed working on this one - I’d had the idea to redo this forever, but never got round to it. The original set marked the first time I started fiddling around with overlays and I feel I can do more now, so it deserved a remake! This also remains one of my favourite quotes from CQL.

My entry for the @mdzs-language-fest

Since I forgot to reblog it with the full translation and explanation, let me ramble a bit here: I chose this poem because of the poet’s history. I don’t actually know that much about him or any other Frisian poets, nor do I think I actually understand his (old) poem that well haha, but I tried! The biggest surprise of this event was discovering @xuesang also made an entry in Frisian, which blew my mind (both discovering this and the set!).

I love rainbows and I love colouring TGCF so this was just an awesome project to do. This makes me want to get back to content creation soon!

This was such a fun event and I really enjoyed working with others and trying out new techniques ♡

In short, I think what I enjoyed most this year was working on projects, so I hope 2022 will give me more opportunities for that!

5.    How much writing do you get done on an average day?

This depends so much on my work schedule, which fluctuates a lot - when I’m working a bunch I’m happy with about 1k words, and when I have plenty of free time I try to at least double that so I can update a WIP every few days.

(ANY words written in a day is a victory, though!)

17.  What writing habits or rituals do you have?

When I really want to buckle down, I’ll listen to music with headphones and have something non-distracting playing on my second monitor - my favourites are either horror games that are easy to drop in and out of when I need a brief distraction, or visually pretty stuff like bento cooking channels or Li Ziqi.

24.  Favourite genre to write and read

My comfort zone for writing is definitely fantasy, though I enjoy writing sci-fi even if I find it more challenging. 

Sci-fi is my favourite thing to read, though lately I haven’t read too much that wasn’t Untamed fic. If I have the energy for it, the kind of sci-fi that asks questions about ethics and morality and human nature is always fascinating and makes me feel like my brain is a little broader for having read it. When I don’t, lighter reading like the Vorkosigan Saga (which I will recommend to my last breath), is like delicious comfort food.

34.  What was the hardest scene you ever had to write?

(spoilers ahead)

Oh, boy. It was unquestionably something from Confluence - either the part at the end of chapter five where Jin Yulan is dying and Jiang Cheng hits his breakdown, or in chapter eight where Nie Huaisang re-experiences all of the deaths in his past incarnations. Both of these sections had such huge emotional weight to them that it was not just technically difficult to write them in a way that felt like it did justice to the moment, but it was also incredibly emotionally taxing to be in that mindset for the hours it took to write them.

Or, for a more fun answer, the second XueSang hookup in We Both Know Better. I don’t have personal experience to draw from on their particular relationship dynamic, so I really was nervous about misrepresenting it. And, like, smut is hard to write!

43.  What do you do if/when characters don’t follow the outline?

Complain, usually!

Honestly, though, it depends on what I’m writing. For something as structured and limited as Confluence, which I really do want to keep tight and finish on-schedule, it’s frustrating when it feels like the characters are running away from where I planned them to be. 

When that happens I finish the scene and then take a good hard look at the outline to see if it actually takes things too off-course or if I can adjust to keep it in (because my subconscious is generally smarter than I am, and those kinds of diversions tend to work out for the better.) I like to leave them in - they’re more likely to feel natural than whatever rigid progression I had planned. I’ve yet to truly regret readjusting to leave something like that in place.
