Yaser Abdel Said murdered his two daughters in Honor Killing
Said was an American taxi driver who was married to Patricia and had three children, a son named Islam and two daughters, Amina, 18, and Sarah, 17. He had moved from Egypt to America in 1987, Patricia was 15 when she agreed to marry Said, aged 30 to let him remain in the country.
Said controlled his daughters, as well as sexually assaulting and abusing them. The girls confided in their grandmother (Patricia’s mother) what their father was doing to them, and she called the police, Patricia didn’t want Said to go to prison so she told her daughters to recount their confessions and therefore he continued abusing them. Said would record them without their knowledge, he would go through their phones and have Islam follow them when he wasn’t around. There is video footage that he filmed of his daughters, making sleazy comments and in one video his daughter covers herself with a pillow and screams at him, ‘This is illegal’. When Amina turned 16, he took her to Egypt and told her it was for a holiday, but when he was there he attempted to marry her to his male friend who was aged 50. Amina rang her mother and begged her to help her stop the marriage from going ahead; Said agreed that Islam (who was the oldest child) should marry first.
Said wasn’t happy when he discovered his daughters were dating and in 2007 the girls told their mother that Said had threatened to kill Amina. Patricia and her daughters fled and Said reported his wife and daughter’s missing to the police. Patricia missed her son Islam and secretly got into contact with Said. She told her daughters that she was taking them to visit their grandmother’s grave but that was a lie, she then confessed that she was taking them back to their father. The girls were frightened, however, Sarah obeyed her mother, and Amina initially refused to return and stayed at her boyfriend’s family home. Patricia went over to visit Amina and told her that Said had forgiven them and talked her into returning. Amina said to her boyfriend, ‘My father will never let me see you again’. A few hours later both girls would be dead.
On 1 January 2008, Said told his daughters he was going to take them out to dinner, instead of taking them out to dinner; he drove them to a deserted parking spot and shot dead his daughters. At 7:35pm, Sarah rang 911 and told the operator that she had been shot, ‘My dad shot me and my sister. I’m dying’ The operator heard her get shot again and this was when Sarah died. He had killed Amina first and then shot Sarah nine times. Their bodies were discovered in his abandoned taxi in Irving, Texas at the back of a hotel. Said had contacted his brother Yassein, before and after he murdered his daughters. Patricia later said that her husband believed his daughters were too westernized and ‘too American’.
Said went into hiding and wasn’t found until 2020 in Justin, Texas. He, his son, and Yassein were arrested. He was sentenced to life in prison. Patricia wasn’t punished by the law for her involvement.

Deny and deflect is Israel’s usual strategy for dealing with high-profile civilian deaths.
The deflection has come in three forms: One is claiming Palestinians killed the civilian (famous examples are British cameraman James Miller, 10-year-old Abir Aramin, the three daughters and niece of Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish inside their home in Gaza while he begged on live television for Israel to stop firing).
Often Israel claims that the victim was near a site from which Palestinian gunmen were attacking Israelis and, hence, got killed by accident by Israeli gunfire (four Gaza children on the beach, 40 people taking refuge at a U.N. school in Gaza, the British U.N. worker Iain Hook in Jenin).
Israel has also claimed that the civilian was involved in an attack on Israeli soldiers or was a member of a Palestinian militant organization (photojournalist Yaser Murtaja in Gaza).
In other cases, Israel said that the facts around a killing are unclear, but definitely not Israel’s fault (Palestinian family killed by shell on beach in Gaza).
In the case of the 2003 death of American pro-Palestinian activist, Rachel Corrie, who was run over by a military bulldozer, the Israeli army claimed “a slab of concrete” was likely what killed her.
When Israeli missiles brought down an 11-story media building last year in Gaza, where Palestinian media networks and the Associated Press were located, Israel justified it by saying it was being used by Hamas.

Study Offers Improved Look at Earth’s Ionosphere
New measuring techniques will enable improved measurements of the Earth’s ionosphere, a key to studying and reducing the impact of space weather.
Radio signals have been used to study the density of plasma since the 1920s. Transmitting radio sources include ground-based ionosondes (special radar for the examination of the ionosphere), astronomical phenomena such as pulsars and more recently spacecraft signals used for transmitting data. For example, Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) radio signals are used to measure the density of Earth’s ionosphere. However, the response of the radio signal to the ionospheric plasma is more complicated than simply varying as a function of density. The Earth’s magnetic field affects its electromagnetic wave fluctuations as well. For example, Faraday rotation is a well-known phenomenon, as shown in the image above. But, as a technique for measuring magnetic field, Faraday rotation is limited to just the portion that is oriented in the correct direction. Our discovery complements Faraday rotation enabling a complete measurement of magnetic field strength.
“We discovered that the magnetic field was introducing noise to radio signals. The immediate impact of this work is to enable improved measurements of the Earth’s ionosphere. Additionally, all of the adverse conditions discussed about the hazards of space weather ultimately are driven by the Earth’s ionosphere responding to the Sun’s plasma,” said Elizabeth Jensen, Planetary Science Institute Associate Researcher Scientist and lead author of “The Hunt for Perpendicular Magnetic Field Measurements in Plasma” that appears in The Astrophysical Journal. “By reducing the error in GPS signals from the horizon and expanding the coverage to the poles, issues with communication fidelity losses are immediately improved.”
The effect of the plasma’s perpendicular magnetic field on radio propagation is shown in the image below. “We have discovered how to improve communications between the Earth and spacecraft; how to measure the strength of the magnetic field in space plasmas, an important result for improving space weather predictions; and how to obtain magnetic field measurements from some older archived spacecraft data,” Jensen said. “This is with our breakthrough discovery on how to isolate the contribution of the magnetic field perpendicular to the signal path in radio data.”
Space weather prediction, the physics behind destabilizing the ionosphere by the Sun’s plasma, is dominated by the temperature, velocity, density, and magnetic field of the plasma arriving from the Sun. The greatest source of error in these space weather models derives from the lack of magnetic field measurements in the intervening space between the Sun and the Earth. Improving our ability to predict space weather, via improved magnetic field measurements, enables reducing the costs from these adverse conditions.
“Here on Earth, we are primarily concerned with space weather. Space weather consists of the response of the Earth’s plasma regions to the plasma released by the Sun. Adverse conditions from this interaction include satellite damage, irradiating personnel not just in the space station but on flights near the poles, poor communications from a loss of signal fidelity impacting aircraft and other GPS-dependent equipment, for example self-driving vehicles, and damage to equipment such as power lines or subsea cables,” Jensen said.
This work was supported by Planetary Science Institute and University of Utah facilities. Collaborators Jamesina Simpson and Yaser Rahmani put in their personal time for this effort. Jensen was self-funded through her company, ACS Engineering & Safety.

Mercedes has a BA in Film and TV Production from USC and has directed numerous high-profile actors such as Tiffany Haddish, Idina Menzel, Miranda Cosgrove, Hayley Kiyoko, and Billy Porter, among many others.
Leah Saint Marie
Leah Saint Marie is an investigative journalist turned filmmaker. As a reporter for the Innocence Institute she helped exonerate a man from prison who had spent 25 years wrongfully convicted. As a filmmaker she wrote the award-winning documentary, Price of Honor, led to Yaser Said’s eventual arrest in 2021, one of the FBI’s Top Ten Most Wanted. For two years she served as a field producer for the social justice documentary film company, Brave New Films, where she traveled around the United States on a Ford grant interviewing youth activists. Her short film, Good Girl, won the Paris International Film Festival. Her book of poetry, The Eaten, is being published later this year, she is producing podcasts, and she’s set to direct her next feature film, Teatro dell’Amore in Italy later this year.

Do you consider it “islamophobia” to not support Islam’s overall treatment of women and girls?
I’m just witnessing a white gay man call someone that for stating facts. Like “I can excuse oppression of uterus owners, but I draw the line at disrespecting this religion!”
I strongly considered converting to Islam as an impressionable teenager. It was presented to me as progressive and feminist, even though I had horrific internalized misogyny and homophobia. I was in denial about my sexuality, and I didn’t want to corrupt men’s thoughts with the sight of my body. I wanted to get married and have kids ASAP (strongly encouraged by Islamic society so your life can be complete), and most importantly, I didn’t want to go to hell, which is all too easy for the “wrong” kind of woman in Islam.
An odd hill for a gay man to die on the same week Yaser Said is finally going to jail for murdering his daughters.
No, I don't. You can be critical of a religion without hating every person who's part of it. Misogyny is misogyny whether it's dressed in the Qur'an or the Bible or "cultural relativism" or "suck my girldick TERF." There is no justification old enough or "sacred enough" for the batshit insane purity culture and violence women have been subjected to because of patriarchal religions for millennia. There is no reason for people to be defending the misogyny just because actual islamophobia also exists.
I'm glad that you were able to push past your fear of hell. It can be a very hard thing to not be swayed by when you've been otherwise permanently marked a "bad woman" and the only "salvation" you have are these religions.

I haven’t watched the interview yet, and frankly I don’t think I will. A friend sent a snippet about the Zayn thing and while it was uncalled for (and the part where he said he doesn’t like Zayn) , I think he was kinda supporting him? And trying to be diplomatic? Like they were bitching about Zayn and they expected him to say the same thing but he did the best he could? But yes I feel terrible. I also went to Instagram and I saw people are unstanning him now and honest to God I’m so worried for him 😅

I listened to the snippet again and I'm still disappointed that he said that "he dislikes Zayn", but I do agree that in the middle of the mess he was trying to be serious and kind of supportive. He definitely didn't jump on the "let's talk shit about Zayn" wagon like the others were trying to do, but I also got to admit that I didn't like the implication that his parents weren't supportive.
We all know Trisha is super supportive of him and even though we haven't seen Yaser around much (imo mostly due to 1D's team kind of deleting him from the narrative!), we know Zayn has a lot of respect for him. So that to me didn't feel super right...
My constant state of mind with Liam is always "I'm so worried for him" and "He needs to get help, like serious help!". He definitely needs it because all the alcohol isn't good for him and if one year ago he seemed to be in a better place, now it seems like he is hitting rock bottom and I don't know if there'll be a lot of people around to support him when he needs it :(

Jury selection is set to begin in the trial of a Texas taxicab driver accused in the 2008 "honor killings" of his two teenage daughters, CBS DFW reports.
Yaser Abdel Said was arrested after 12 years on the run in August 2020, in Justin, 36 miles northwest of Dallas. At the time, he was one of the FBI's 10 Most Wanted.
Said's brother Yassein and his son Islam were arrested in Euless, Texas. Both of them were charged with harboring a known fugitive and are now serving time in federal prison.
The Egyptian-born suspect had been sought on a capital murder warrant since the New Year's Day 2008 fatal shootings of the two Lewisville High School students, Sarah Yaser Said, 17, and Amina Yaser Said, 18.
A police report at the time said a family member told investigators that the suspect threatened "bodily harm″ against Sarah for going on a date with a non-Muslim. The mother, Patricia Said, fled with her daughters in the week before their deaths because she was in "great fear for her life." Gail Gattrell, the sisters' great-aunt, has called the deaths an "honor killing," in which a woman is murdered by a relative to protect her family's honor.
The teenage sisters were found shot multiple times in a cab outside a motel in Irving, a Dallas suburb. Police found them after one of the girls called 911 from a cellphone and said she was dying.
"Help," said a crying voice on the 911 recording, later determined by police to be that of Sarah Said. "I'm dying. Oh my God. Stop it."
Police could not immediately find the teens after the 7:33 p.m. call. Much of what Sarah said in the recording was unintelligible, and the dispatcher's repeated requests for her to provide an address went unanswered.
An emergency dispatcher received another call about an hour later from an Irving motel. The sisters' bodies were in a cab, one in the front passenger seat and the other in the back. The caller said he could see blood.
"They don't look alive," said the caller, whose name was deleted from the recording.

A "honor killings" father who killed his young daughters in a cab because they were dating non-Muslim boys was arrested. The FBI has apprehended a father wanted in connection with the 2008 murders of his two teenage daughters after he spent 12 years on the run. Yaser Abdel Said, 63, was peacefully taken into custody by agents on Wednesday in Justin, Texas, according to an FBI statement. His daughters, Lewisville High School students Sarah Yaser Said, 17, and Amina Yaser Said, 18, had died, and he had been sought for capital murder. Said had been listed as one of the FBI's Ten Most Wanted since 2014, when he fatally shot his two kids in a taxi in Irving, Texas. The females had been seeing non-Muslim boys, according to the police, who described the deaths as "honor killings," and the suspect was furious about this. When the shootings took place, the girls believed they were heading to dine with their taxi driver father. After the shootings, Sara was able to dial 911. As she spoke to a 911 dispatcher, she begged for assistance and identified her father as the shooter, according to the Washington Post. “Help,” Sarah said. “I’m dying. Oh my God. Stop it.” Authorities took some time to locate the girls after they were unable to determine the address from the 911 call. Around 7:30 p.m., someone from an Omni hotel nearby discovered the girls' dead bodies and dialed 911. The search for their killer never stopped, according to Irving Police Chief Jeff Spivey, despite 12 years of disappointment and dead ends. Adnoc Drilling secures $1.53bn contract to boost Adnoc's offshore operations
Adnoc has awarded a $1.53 billion contract to Adnoc Drilling to support the expansion of the parent company's offshore operations and its goal of boosting crude oil production capacity to five million barrels per day by 2030 amid growing global demand for oil and gas with a lower carbon intensity.
The two-year contract awarded by Adnoc Offshore covers the provision of 12 jack-up rigs, two island rigs and the associated integrated drilling services, the state oil company said on Monday.
More than 80 per cent of the award value will flow back into the UAE economy under Adnoc’s In-Country Value programme.
“Contracts like this help ensure we continuously deliver strong and sustained growth, while further driving shareholder value, and our ambitious rig fleet expansion programme, to which we have made a significant capex commitment, is making the delivery of such contracts possible," said Abdulrahman Abdullah Al Seiari, chief executive of Adnoc Drilling.
“Our status as a key enabler of Adnoc’s production capacity expansion targets, offers investors a solid opportunity for sustained and predictable revenue growth, coupled with market leading cash flows and profitability margins, enabling our progressive dividend policy.”
Adnoc Drilling is the largest national drilling company in the Middle East by rig fleet size, owning 105 rigs as of July 31 and expecting two new rigs to commence operations by the end of 2022.
The most recent award will leverage Adnoc Drilling's start-to-finish offering, as well as the company's scale to drive value and efficiencies while minimising environmental impact, the parent company said.
Adnoc Drilling listed on the ADX last October and has rapidly expanded operations in recent months.
In August, it was awarded two contracts worth $1.5bn and $1.9bn by Adnoc Offshore to boost production capacity. It also received two contracts worth $2bn linked to Adnoc's Hail and Ghasha development project in July.
“Adnoc Offshore will continue to responsibly harness the energy in Abu Dhabi’s waters, as we increase production capacity to meet the world’s growing demand for energy with lower carbon intensity oil and gas,” said Yaser Almazrouei, Adnoc's upstream executive director.
“Adnoc Drilling is a world leader in drilling and completion services. Their deep expertise and wide technical capability will maximise value and minimise the environmental footprint of every well as Adnoc expands its production capacity.”
The award will support the expansion of Adnoc’s crude oil production capacity and gas self-sufficiency for the UAE.
Adnoc Drilling has provided integrated drilling services to Adnoc Offshore since 2019. The company’s highly competitive position, integrated capabilities and technical expertise have helped to increase the efficiency of Adnoc’s offshore operations.
The company said it enabled more than $250 million in savings for its customers through the successful end-to-end delivery of drilling and completion services since it launched its integrated drilling services offering in 2018.
Adnoc is the company's majority shareholder, with an 84 per cent stake, while US energy services company Baker Hughes, which entered into a partnership with Adnoc Drilling in October 2018, has 5 per cent while US contract oil and gas driller Helmerich & Payne holds 1 per cent.
