This has the makings to be a very long post so buckle in however. I have thoughts about Grian and loyalty.

This was brought on because I was thinking of a fic I wrote over the summer for aufest (we were gods we were kids you should check it out) and in this fic I use daggers that rendog gives grian, wels, and false as a metaphor for loyalty and alliance.

Because the thing is, we see both wels and falses daggers again by the end of the fic. Wels gives his to False, showing that all his loyalty and alliance stands with her no matter what. False has hers as well, keeping it close to her chest and only revealing it at the perfect time. But Grian? The only time we see his dagger is when it's given to him, and he plays with it and treats it like a toy.

Because that's how Grian treats loyalty. He treats it like a game, something to be played with and dropped in a moment when he gets bored. He says he "goes where the wind blows" in Secret Life, and even in Hermitcraft his loyalty shifts as to what's the most fun--joining the resistance against the king but also creating a puzzle room to stop them--it's all very flaky.

Which is where we turn to the daggers again, and what they're made of. False's dagger, made of lapis, isn't as hard as wels' made of opal, but it's harder to break than the rhodochrosite of Grian’s. (yes I am a geology major. no i will not shut up about it)

Much like rhodochrosite, Grian's loyalty isn't very strong. It crumbles easily, breaks under the pressure of losing allies and going where the bit takes him. He flakes, because to him loyalty to other people is merely a game, but loyalty to himself--whether that means self-preservation or following arbitrary rules he set for himself--is something that needs protecting.
