Mods to Make School Better (High School Years + Discover University)

I really love The Sims 4, but I love The Sims 4 because I play a heavily modded game. I know that option isn’t for everyone, but for those who do... Sometimes it’s hard to know where to look. It’s like when you’re hungry and you open up your food delivery service of choice and are just overwhelmed by the options these days.

Luckily... I look around a lot.

This post is inspired by the other amazing posts here, here, here and of course here. It started as something just for High School Years but grew... very quickly...

This list was last updated 17 September 2022 / Patch 1.91.205.

More Students at High School (Ksuihuh) OR High School More Class Mates (Aramiteus)

Use one or the other here and read the descriptions because if you use Aramiteus’ version, you need to change MCCC Maximum Sims on Lot Value to about 40. 

The main draw is that more students will be on the High School lot. Aramiteus’ mod also adds 2 other teachers and an extra lunch person dependent on how many whiteboards/cafeterias you have on lot. It also requires you to choose your classmates before going to school.

Ksuihuh’s version comes with a script mod to increase the numbers of sims on the lot, as well an extra mod for an extra lunch person. It does not make you pick the sims going to class--you will need Rex’s Choose High School Classmates mod to ensure the sims you want are going to show up to school!

ChippedSim’s High School Tweaks

ChippedSim calls these “tweaks” but a full Active Class experience overhaul is a bit more than that in my opinion! 

Please note that updates are coming to this mod ACTIVELY - just today I saw that there were more in class interactions for the Active Classes! So keep an eye out on tumblr or twitter.

ChippedSim also overhauled the lockers so that you can keep more thing in there, as well as buy some stuff! Take a look at the full breakdown here, but I can’t recommend this enough.

ADeepIndigo’s Small High School Years Tweaks

Yes, I’m saying just download the whole lot.

More Discipline adds Parenthood compatibility--you can now discipline your kids for misbehaving/sneaking out/getting expelled. Why wasn’t that included by default? Ask EA, and thank ADeepIndigo in the meantime.

More Fun Pier Rides does what it says: raises the fun meter more!

Less Random Crushes makes it so that crushes are determined by Sims’ personalities instead of just randomly occurring.

Shop for Prom Outfit is just a really cute idea! It costs $100 to buy a prom outfit, and that can only be done once prom is announced.

My favorite has to be More Locker Notes. Don’t just let your sims cyberbully on Social Bunny. Let them passive-aggressively do it in person too.

ADeepIndigo’s Dynamic Teen Life

As of writing this, the mod is still in testing but I’ve been playing with it in my game for a few days and I’m still playing around with it, but it already adds sooo much more to my teen’s lives. More afterschool activities, popularity and cliques, new journal entries (for the Parenthood journals).... Gossip, rumors and having to actually try out to join the cheerleading squad.

Oh yes, I think this’ll become not just an essential mod for HSY users, but for most legacy players as well.

MissyHissy’s Form Groups in School

I won’t be surprised if MissyHissy comes out with some more mods but this is the one from their tweaks I’m currently using. EA didn’t let groups form in school which... you know, you’d think they’d want some cross-compatibility with previous packs to allow for literal cliquey behaviors but.

Anyway, this fixes that!

Lot51.cc’s Fashion Authority

I haven’t played much with this yet for high school but have it in my game for other reasons. This mod lets you take control of townie outfits... Including situation ones, and can restrict by regions. This is excellent if you want to have your sims wear a uniform to Copperdale, for instance, or you have a specific cheerleading uniform in mind, etc.

LittleMsSam’s HSY Bug Fixes

Hopefully we will not need these forever. Until they are patched though...

Take Exam Fix - stops sims from just getting up five minutes after the exam.

NPC Relationship Autonomy Fix - are you tired of random sims barging in, asking you to be BFFs after you added them on Social Bunny? fear not, because this should curb NPCs’ stalking you.

High School Promote Fix - helps the game promote sims from Cs to Bs if they’ve been going to school actively the whole time...

Stop Phone Change Color Obsession - I needed this one bad. Stops sims from changing their phone color every time they visited a new lot, and removed the camera focus as well

A tiny little mod by Ilkavelle to help your sims sneak out, if they haven’t been getting invited out by their classmates!

Ilkavelle’s Teen Aspiration Bundle

I didn’t link this before as the teen aspirations hadn’t been updated to work with high school years... But now they have! This adds a few more teen-only aspirations for your sims (Prom Royalty, Overachiever, Towards Independence and Teenage Rebellion). 

ADeepIndigo’s Summer Camps

We’re moving away from High School Years fixes and enhancements straight over to the joys of gameplay. This mod adds Summer Camps to the game which is... actually really super fun? Summer Camp is for children and teen sims; there are a variety of different camps to send your kids off to. This isn’t an active experience; it’s a rabbit hole “job” that replaces school, and there are both day camps and away camps. It’s also ONLY available during the summer, and camp automatically ends when summer does.

Simston Private School [originally by SHEnanigans, adopted by ADeepIndigo]

ADeepIndigo adopted this mod by SHEnanigans after she was hired by EA, and updated it for the most recent patch. There’s not a current write-up about this mod available from a modding source, but there is a review by SnootySims that you can read, or you can read this capture from the Wayback Machine.

This mod recreates the TS2 Headmaster Visit event - if you pass, your child/teen is then enrolled in Private School. No more basic public school for your snooty rich sims!

Homework Tweaks & Subject Homework [originally by Scarlet, adopted by LittleMsSam]

I’ve had this so long, I genuinely forgot how long sims take to do homework. This mod comes in a few different flavors, but it makes sims do their homework... faster! Time is money, right?

Subject Homework also allows sims to raise skill while doing their homework. There’s a couple different options for what homework they can do, and I personally like to try to match it to what class my sims had in High School that day [maybe they write a persuasive essay after Social Studies, etc].

Zero’s University Custom Degrees & Tweaks/Fixes

Maybe you’re like me. Maybe you’ve played TS4 a lot, and you’re tired of all those regular degrees. Maybe you’re a little annoyed that completing university plays into the lie we American millennials were told that going to college is the fast track to riches. Well fear not, because not only does this mod add 15 custom degrees, it also overhauls how degrees play into careers if you want it to.

This is very modular so read the post carefully. I personally play with Zero’s tunings, because I also use University Costs More, Higher Scholarships and  Harder Distinguished Degree Acceptance, as well as the Required Degree for Promotion that’s in optional folder. I know TS4 is a fantasy where I can have vampires and werewolves and also secret agents but I also like to make life hard on myself.

If you just want the Custom Degrees, good news: there’s also a file that goes by EA’s tunings so you don’t need to have everything cost an arm, leg and house or require degrees for jobs or anything. 

There are other tweaks available, mostly to adjust the autonomy from roommates in dorms.

Revy’s Get Back your Presentation Board

I don’t want to talk about all the times I’ve lost my presentation board. This mod provides a way to get it back. You just have to email your professor.

LittleMsSam’s Choose your Roommate

Lets you pick your dormmates or roommates :’) Great if you have a specific storyline in mind and already have the classmates picked out. This is another mod that has steps so read the post carefully. You can also pair it with LittleMsSam’s Chores mod to set up cleaning rotations :)

Zerbu’s Go to School V5 [Builder’s Tools]

Did you think I’d leave out the child stage? I’m not EA. I’m including this one here as while its actively in development, builders can get started building elementary schools now. You can also read Zerbu’s plans for elementary school here. I would not recommend using the old mod for now, as its considered unsupported and will be replaced by the new version requiring HSY.

But until then, I’m keeping it here as I know Go to School is a long running mod. V4 is here.

Tired of the same 4 aspirations for each kid? Me too!! This mod adds four new aspirations for your kids to complete: Little Entrepreneur, School Star, Little Explorer and Voidcritters Master.

School Trip: take a trip with your class to a museum or park!

Science Fair: yes, HSY has a science fair too, but this is an active event for kids as well! Compete in a science fair against your peers, and perhaps be judged as the best

Debate Event: let your future lawyers compete against each other, starting from grade school. These events can also be attended by teens, in case you want them to go to debate club as well

Talent Contest: well if there’s a science fair, your artsy students should also get a chance to show off, right? This one isn’t required but it is a really cute idea.

Ilkavelle’s One Time Jobs for Teens & Kids

One of the childhood aspiration add-ons is about making some money as a kid. This allows kids to take up some jobs around the neighborhood (pet sitting, dog walking, lemonade stand, etc). Just a nice little add-on for your kids to do something extra.

Also, no one owes anyone that perceived fuckability. It's fine to find someone attractive and even find yourself fantasizing but it's not owed to you. They did an excellent job making him look like the doomed prince.

This is such a good point, and I could not agree more. (Although ftr, "the doomed prince" always makes me think of Hamlet, and god knows Michael was far more attractive in that role. Haha.)

But I think what you said is part of why the comments bother me so much. It's that it becomes blatantly clear that these fans only cared about Michael as long as he remained what they perceived as "fuckable"--that regardless of whether they wanted to have sex with him, he is seen as more "acceptable" overall when he looks a certain way and less so when he doesn't. I think Anna's snarky comments about Michael's appearance over the years have bothered me for a similar reason, because they also speak to her only finding him attractive when he looks a certain way.

Again, this is not to say that Michael has to look fuckable at all times, but it's clearly something that AL places value on the way the fans do, though in her case, it's because she can use it as something to brag about. So that's why we won't see her make a post to the effect of "So proud of him for taking on this difficult role," because she knows no one is going to want to fuck Michael while he looks like Prince Andrew. Her disapproving of his looks while taking on a specific role is nothing new, as she did the same thing when he played Chris Tarrant in Quiz, but it also gives an indication that she and the fans are on the same level of maturity, which again goes back to those Twitter comments striking such a nerve in me.

Michael is an actor. His job is to act, to become and embody whatever role he is playing to the best of his ability. Some people seem to think that acting is only about being glamorous, but if we are going to express outrage when the media and others make remarks about Charlize Theron "uglying it up" to play Aileen Wuornos when all she was doing was her job, then we should be just as outraged at people attacking Michael for looking "ugly" for doing his. (Also, the fact that Monster came out in 2003 and we still need to have this same conversation twenty fucking years later is utterly depressing...)

All this to say that yes, attractiveness and sex appeal/charisma can be and often are important parts of what makes an actor bankable, but looks alone do not make someone a talented actor, nor a good person. And maybe if people looked beyond the surface of their own desires, they might start to realize that...

So, I've been doing the Great Sheith Reblog for a while now, gradually reblogging almost everything I shared before that was tagged as Sheith. Lots of art, gifsets, fics and recs, old merch posts, and meta to go around with the occasional dash of salt because lord, dumbness about shipping brings out the salt sometimes. But most of the time it's a lovely nostalgia hit and a reminder of why I still love this ship with all my fandom heart. It's bittersweet sometimes, seeing the usernames that left with Tumblr's worst decision ever, the fellow fans who have moved on to other things, and yes, the hopes and dreams we had before Season 8.

Long blathering under the cut: musings about the persistence of anti-shippers and what queerbaiting actually means.

But occasionally what both amuses and frustrates me is how things line up because it's 2024 and we still have klantis/antis over on the former Twitter spreading the same lies about Shiro and Keith - about their ages, about how they met, about what their relationship is. Right now over there, arguing is happening again because someone put up a clout-chasing poll about which mlm ship was the most influential and included KL but not Sheith (KL beat Johnlock and then lost to Hualian, so I'm happy twice over). Side note - I think if we take "influence" as a completely neutral term, then yeah, KL has been a huge negative influence on fandoms as it was one of the places that allowed puriteen attitudes and anti behavior to grow unchecked for so long. That helped turn some ship fandoms into cults, in which you had to believe with utter certainty that your ship would be canon or you weren't a "true" fan of the ship. That put more emphasis on opposing a rival ship through wank and harassment instead of focusing on the joy and fun of creating for the ship you supposedly love.

And that poll prodded someone to create a Google Form for soliciting answers as to what the biggest examples of queerbaiting are in media. And of course people are saying KL and Adam/Shiro, among other things that are not at all queerbait. These are examples of people guessing wrong and getting mad about it. Queerbait requires that the producers/writers/etc. say outright that a ship is going to happen and then it doesn't, without any influences from the powers above them making changes. Not received fan "wisdom". Not marketing doing things without consulting the producers.

And I just reblogged someone's ask in which they said they felt queerbaited by Sheith solely because of the "brother" line in "The Black Paladins". The answer is excellent and worth a ready if you haven't seen it on my blog already.

Breaking it down:

KL is not queerbait. KL was never planned as a potential ship and LM/JDS said so multiple times. They said it never occurred to them as a possibility and by the time KL's popularity took off they were too far along in the writing to try and go back and make changes, because animators need time to draw. LM flat-out said she was surprised that it became a thing. If the producers are telling you over and over in no uncertain terms that a ship had never been on the table and couldn't be added to the table now, that's not a case of queerbait. And they spoke of Lance's love interests as female every single time. JDS/LM never said anything that would lead fans into thinking KL was a possibility without the deliberate and willful misinterpreting of their words.

Adam/Shiro is not queerbait. Adam is a minor character in a series with a large cast. He has two functions: to be evidence of Shiro's status as a queer man and to be a "face" for all the pilots that died in the first wave of Sendak's invasion. Some people try to claim that LM and JDS queerbaited with their answers at SDCC 2018, but they're wrong. The only thing LM said was that we would see more of Adam in S7. And we did. She did not promise we'd see more of him with Shiro. That was people inserting what they wanted to hear, just like them trying to elevate Adam's status to a fiancé when again, LM clearly stated that they were serious and considering getting engaged. Not engaged. Not married. Just a couple that was serious about each other but broke up.

I don't consider Sheith to be true queerbait. It might fall under the cryptoqueer situation explained at the end of the post linked above, but JDS and LM were mostly very careful to talk of Sheith in terms of deep friendship and devotion to one another, after the initial wave of support for fan content during S1, prior to the klanti movement taking off. The only thing that skirts the line for me is a quote, I think from JDS, saying that if Shiro had a new love interest it would be someone he has known a long time. Or maybe that was about the romances in general being developed over seasons and not Shiro-specific - I would need to research. (Yet more proof that the endcard "wedding" was not planned since we didn't see the unnamed groom until S7 and they never interacted.) And that was said before studio execs started meddling and caused the trainwreck of S8.

I do think we were supposed to have an open ending for Sheith. Klantis like to point out a storyboard artist claiming that "no one wins" this ship war as evidence that KL was supposed to happen and got changed, but that statement applies if Sheith is left open-ended and Allurance happens, even without the endcards.

I've always loved Chasocoby's art. Mainly because of how he draws faces and comes up with excellent poses for his character art. I love Melia's expression on here. She looks surprised as she looks at the viewer. I love the posture of his hands as well. The shading on the hair looks very good, too. What more can you say about it that is phenominal?

And the best part about this is, I think this maybe one of Chascoby's favorite commissions he has done. I can tell he got very excited when he shared the initial pose with me.

And now for a little essay about our boy Simon (tw: mentions of abuse and symptoms of PTSD below the cut).

SIDE NOTE: I have not played/seen MW3 yet (sans the major character death that was spoiled to me on Twitter...thanks Twitter), so this is based on my experience with the previous games/comics (2009 and 2022).

MY OBSERVATIONS FROM THE CANON

Simon is level-headed. Calm. Cool. Collected. He’s a military officer after all-he has to have a healthy level of control over his emotions. That doesn't mean he can't raise his voice or get angry, though.

He has a witty/deadpan sense of humor (and isn’t afraid to show it). Just because he’s a serious character doesn’t mean he can’t joke around and have a little fun (we know the banter he had with Johnny throughout the “Alone” mission. Was it so they could keep a level head? Yes, but I think Ghost appreciates jokes like that outside of tense situations as well).

Simon is reserved. He can most definitely speak his mind, but (in the beginning of MW2 especially) he’s more focused on accomplishing the mission(s) rather than establishing a strong repertoire with his comrades. It takes him a bit to warm up to people, but once he does, his loyalty is abundantly clear.

He's patient but also knows when it's time to act quickly. Stake-outs and long missions have made him a persistent (and hardened) individual.

HEADCANONS (LOOSELY BASED ON CANON)

I can see Ghost as being VERY weary of establishing close relationships due to his past experience with abuse. Living in that environment could have conditioned Ghost to keep his guard up at all times. While hypervigilance may be praised in his field of work, it most definitely affects him in his personal life.

He's very strict, both in and out of the field (I can see it in canon as well, though). He enjoys routine and the consistency/stability it provides (when he has access to it).

Ghost definitely struggles with the hedgehog's dilemma (for context: a metaphor for issues with intimacy; hedgehogs may want to cuddle for warmth but hurt each other with their quills when they get too close). He yearns to connect with others, but is afraid of all the risks it may impose on him or the other person.

However, once someone gets past his stern exterior, Ghost is unrelentingly compassionate and an excellent listener. He never wants an innocent person to go through what he experienced, and sees himself as a protector for those who can't protect themselves.

All in all, if you'd like to write more true to Ghost's character, I highly suggest reading Modern Warfare 2: Ghost. It applies to the 2009 version of Simon Riley, but it definitely helped me gain perspective into that version's backstory. One of the hardest things about writing Ghost in-character (for me at least) is that he's a mysterious individual. No matter how many personality traits we pick apart (inferred or fully displayed), we may never know the full Simon Riley.

In that case...don't be afraid to play around with how you think he would act in certain situations based on what you've observed in the games/other material. That's the beauty of writing fanfiction: you get to create scenarios that might have never come about in the main story and elaborate on what's already established in canon.

I’m camping and this is a queued post.

I watched big joel’s “conservative comedy ruined my life” in bits and pieces last weekend. or the weekend before? I don’t remember. part of me just thinks I’m getting old and running out of patience for, like, elevated react content. another part of me is thinking, “no! it’s laziness you can’t stand!” i know joel is a capable guy – I think “twitter and empathy” is an excellent video essay. i more or less know how YouTube sponsors work in a way that disincentivizes being thorough – “get it out by may 10th, or you’re not getting $200”. all that. maybe this was best practiced as a labor of love rather than a professional career, but I won’t digress

I think what my issues with it are stem from two questions that weren’t engaged with at all:

what makes comedy work?

what is a conservative? it’s a regionally variant thing in how it presents, after all.

If you’d like to hear me ramble, it’s under the cut. if not, i hope everything goes well for you today, and we’ll leave it at that.

alright. now the true reader time has kicked in. im getting dirty.

a lot of the framework I think joel is using here is from this out of context george carlin clip that’s shared en-masse whenever a comedian is in hot water for a tasteless joke. but I honestly think he and most people are interpreting it wrong – it’s somewhat backhanded advice from one professional to another. even if andrew dice clay meant his diceman character as a parody, he’s risking an audience who may not get that, and probably won’t think particularly high of him when they find out his surname by birth is silverman.

the work people remember of carlin’s is anti-establishment and anti-consumerism, yes. but the shtick in that era of his career is mostly about being curmudgeonly. he wasn’t trying to establish an over-arching theory of comedy via one larry king interview. and I guess, while we’re thinking about carlin, we ought to remember that he was arrested for cursing in public at his shows, like, multiple times in the 70s. his attitude towards political correctness (& supposedly what we’d call “wokeness” now) is deeply informed by this. he’d probably call a lot of the posts you’ve endorsed newfangled yuppie shit. don’t invoke the dead unless you know what they were about.

sorry for that digression, but I do think it matters. specifically in the case of joel, who I think leaned into the out of context clip and… developed a nonsense theory of comedy because of that. he says something to the effect of “comedy enforces social norms” when he isn’t talking about comedians. he’s talking about bullies. bullies and their patchwork of social allies aren’t funny. everyone thinks they’re trying too hard in a meaningless and pathetic race.

comedy is often predicated on surprise. if you pay attention, you’ll be a more intelligent person for it. and a more surprising one. funny how that works. I don’t personally believe this neo-breadtube space is inhabited by smart people. I don’t care how many masters degrees they’ll try to break my nose with pointing this out.

okay, getting to the point – the daily wire is not anywhere near the go-to source of conservative bile. their traffic has taken a massive hit since facebook de-emphasized viral news. Imagine making something criticizing “conservative comedy” and not mentioning greg gutfeld at all. fox’s viewership dwarfs that of the daily wire, but the daily wire gets undue legitimacy by way of being terminally online. if I said “Ben Shapiro” to my parents, they’d assume this is the name of some guy that worked with me rather than a pundit. 

he also does some idiot magic here where he calls matt stone and trey parker conservatives. they aren’t, they’re libertarians. these sorts of distinctions matter to people who care about gay shit like accuracy. he mostly looks at “team america: world police” as reference and says something to the effect of “they accepted the war on terror as it is”. like are you honestly kidding dude. have you seen the south park movie? they not only characterized the army as incompetent, but actively racist on top of that.

you have to wonder if he has a selective memory about the “team america” movie as well, because he frames it so strangely. because the version of the song where they’re shouting out the names of corporations as a joke is in the end credits only and…

oh. alright. you didn’t watch it. damn. that’s sad. couldn’t even ask you to sit for two hours without picking up your phone like a fidgety little rat.

and… like. as much as I do not like to pull the “I’m bipolar!! I find this gross!!” card, I’m doing it. at the end of this video, joel shows a video of a Roseanne Barr routine where she’s very blatantly wrote while having a manic episode. He calls it interesting, I personally don’t find this all that interesting. I’ve been there. It’s dumb. It’s needlessly scaremongering and dramatic. It isn’t interesting. It makes me feel uncomfortable while I watch it. I was never a conspiracy theorist type but the requisite nonsensical yapping is all too clear to me.

changes i liked and disliked in the rwrb movie 📨

ohmygod. i'm finally gonna talk about this movie, aren't i? i've held myself off from making original creations like video or photo edits for this piece of media, and i still am, because i feel like if i start making one i won't stop, but i think a textpost can be an exception because i've made tweets and threads about it on twitter already.

anyway, i just wanted to rattle off on these since these opinions have been simmering up on me since the movie first came out. lol i watched it 15 hours later on a whim with bar-in-hell expectations. karma got to me, because i ended up getting brainrot over it.

this is a long overdue post.

the aging up is both a yes and a no for me. a yes because i have previously never been opposed to aging up YA characters (technicaly rwrb is more new adult that young adult but whatever, it's teetering) like shadowhunters, and matthew does a great job of justifying this choice: grounding their romance into a more mature and real love. it's not to say that young love isn't valid or real enough, but the decision to make firstprince in their late 20s makes the discussion of forever and their adamant to fight for their love is more realistic and believable. with that said, it's also a no for me because their ages are also detrimental to the timeline and character arcs. for instance, henry's grief hits him like a ten wheeler as a teenager, and the whole explanation that casey writes for his grief is that he expected to deal with something as magnanimous as that kind of loss when he's older and not when his brain hasn't even fully developed. another instance is alex's having to grapple with his career choices after college!

matthew's best change is quite possibly firstprince exchanging the key and the ring. hands down, much better. i do understand that since the novel is in third person limited (alex's pov), it makes sense at a literary level (lol) for alex to own both the key and the necklace ("two homes side by side" is a BANGER line), but the equal complete devotion that the two have for each other at that point is excellent through that showcase of exchange. i own part of you, you own part of me. it's such a great display for the trope of "token of love." romcoms are back, baby! cinema is back!

worst change, then, is probably alex's parents being still happily married and in love. my hot take is that i understand why june was cut out and she's not a huge loss, compared to alex growing up as a child of divorce. making that change to alex having parents who are still together removes a huge dimension to alex's characterization because a lot of his issues stem from that, mainly his abandonment issues. you can see the full effect in the scene where he storms the kensington palace. i understand and respect it, matthew essentially explaining that because this was a different henry, then this was a different alex to — that he needed to be softer. he was more pleasing, desperate, confused with "can we please talk?" instead of the brash "your royal fucking highness!" because that's what it is: confusion. movie!alex couldn't fully understand why someone would just up and leave like that, whereas book!alex was immediately angry because he knows full well when someone leaves him. (*ahem* his dad) but anyway someone discusses it here in such great detail and i very much agree!

oh another good change is showing henry's pov during the email leak. nicholas... sir... ugh. fine, we're getting you that damn oscar. but seriously, he did great. t'was devastating seeing his face crumble, and the one show/display of roual authority, of hot flash of anger, of power, just to talk to alex was even sadder because that was the only time he uses it.

another yes and no change for me is "history huh." the placement of the most popular line from being im the email to being said out loud privately for the two of them is something i'm divided about. yes: there is a great deal of comfort that comes with henry getting to hear that from alex's own lips. it's very sweet and romantic and yeah tbh tbh i would've melted into a puddle right then and there. that there is a comfort that comes with at least that wasn't taken away from them. but no: the whole point of that being in the email (along with bad metaphors, an incomplete list, the story of the prince born with his heart on the outside of his body, etc.) is that these two's privacy was violated. the whole world read those words that were just meant for the two of them, but the public ended up using that line for their banners and flags and signs. and it's important why? it was then made into a form of reclamation. that even if they went through shit and worried about the consequences of being public figures, that there was hope that at least a surprisingly large number of the general public voiced their support, that they were backed by the people they were serving. removing that from the email in the movie... well, you get the rest.

should the height difference even be talked about? that's a factor that is 80% outside of anyone's control lmao??? but i do think it's worth noting that i've grown kinda fond with it that now i imagine taylor & nick's physical builds when reading firstprince fanfics plus having a taller alex who has a height complex instead of a shorter alex who has a height insecurity is so fucking funny. what a great running gag. the gaslighting of the audience into thinking henry is taller is 10/10. best lampshading ever, actually.

henry standing up for himself to the king is both a yes and no too. yes: matthew's justification is pretty nice. not only does it save them production costs to hire a princess catherine actress and pacing issues, it also makes sense narratively. the movie has written henry as voiceless throughout it really well, so for him to save himself is a great reason for why. but also it's a no for me because it's equally important that catherine the negligent mother starts compensating for her absences by battling generational conflict lmao. there's also the factor of a woman saving a man too! the rwrb universe emphasizes quite well about how henry and alex are surrounded by these powerful female figures who are near and dear to them in their lives. to grow up learning from them. point is, movie!henry standing up for himself is a nice choice because he's older. and at the same time, book!henry being supported by her mother is a great choice because he needed to be affirmed with a larger support system in his younger age.

making henry the one to clarify at first that their relationship should be casual instead of alex is a big yes for me. the mixed signals henry does in the book makes for borderline inconsistent characterization, but he's younger there so it makes sense for us to be confused. but henry in the movie "explaining himself to alex for the past year" is a great cleaning up because at the start, henry has been clear on "ok but we can't do this long term."

this has been sitting on my drafts for too long (weeks) so i'll just post this now. and maybe update it, idk. this post feels too incomplete but i don't want to sit on it, so. whatever here it is. 🤣

I wasn’t able to catch the comments on the actual fic but judging from the ones on your post addressing this…it’s very safe to say that none of them actually read the fic. Which is fine, and I’m never going to be happy about making people read stuff which violates their boundaries, but it really doesn’t help their case when they try to claim moral superiority…(and yes that is what they’re doing. The immediate aggression and like. Not even attempting to understand the other perspective outside of their pre established expectations and stuff really doesn’t hide it)

what I don’t think people realize is that the act of tagging dark content as *dark content* is a direct acknowledgment that the work treads into ‘impure’ or ‘immoral’ grounds—which is to say that it’s an acknowledgment that this shit isn’t to be condoned IRL or anything. Like, I’m sorry, if someone is genuinely into incest (to clarify, by that I mean someone who’s like. Into it. Brings it with them IRL? Idk how to exactly define it but I think most of us know what I mean) was tagging the work, they’d wouldn’t really tag it like dark content, nor would it really carry the sinister undertones and sense of ‘offness’ that the large majority of dc fics have in my experience. I’ve gone ahead and read the thing and sure enough IT IS PROPERLY TAGGED AND ACKNOWLEDGED AS DC BY THE TAGS AND WITHIN THE NARRATIVE. THE FIC IS LITERALLY ABOUT HOW TERRIBLE AND TOXIC CODEPENDENCY IS AND AVEN AND READER’S RELATIONSHIP IS A WORST CASE SCENARIO OF TOXIC CODEPENDENCY—

Which, is to say, the way people just act on their assumptions like this is depressing. Lots of Twitter migration tho so not super surprising but it still is. Honestly I could write a whole post or essay on this because there are layers to this…like a delicious onion. but it’s really tiring seeing people just go for the throat whenever they see anything remotely ‘immoral’. Just look at the shit that went on with Andi and Leilei. They’re remaining within their own bubbles and really don’t bother to again, understand dc creators. You did link cinnamonest’s excellent post, but I really doubt any of them read it. It’s just a mob mentality, which thrives off of the immediate dopamine and adrenaline rush whenever they condemn ‘evil’ and whatnot. Idk. But also I suspect that some of the ppl who left those comments have at least read some of ur prior works, and if that’s the case…ah, yes. How I love it when people place horrendous things against each other to argue which ones more immoral. Seriously. Why should you be worried if noncon or if incest is worse?????? Both are bad and that sort of conversation is really morpnic. Are these people actually having these consequences? Yes and no. Not IRL, but there’s definitely stuff happening internally in order to, as always, justify the individuals actions. Again there’s a ton more I can say but this is getting long. I’m personally conservative with tags (tumblr search engine tags) which helps minimize it and stuff. At the very least you’re taking it in stride—I personally wouldn’t interact with them much. In another note, it’s good to see you aren’t turning a thing into a thang. If those people aren’t even going to bother to put on a veneer of courtesy, there is no reason to take them seriously

hii im doing a thing called slowtober (made by @/oeildesaturne on instagram, french speaking folks check it out!! although be aware of tw mental health and eds talks) and i'm posting on twitter a seungjin au per word

"Did it work?" Seungmin pouts staring at the potion in front of him.

The mixture's liquid looks decent, the forms of the steam above it looks like the kind of description their teacher made during class earlier, but something is off. He looks back to the recipe, knowing very well he has not missed a step because he is always very diligent with his work and also because Hyunjin was checking after him, but still. He checks.

"I think it did," Hyunjin answers after getting close to the potion. His cheeks coloured in pink. Seungmin does not notice.

"You think or you're sure? Those are two different things." 

Seungmin smells the potion. This is what is wrong with it. It smells nothing. And the smell is surely the most important thing about this potion. It has to smell like things the person smelling loves. Seungmin expected to smell old books, something homey, maybe that pie Hogwarts serves during Halloween. But all he can smell is Hyunjin's perfume because the latter is so close to him right now, hovering over his shoulder. And to be honest they've spent so much time together lately, Seungmin feels like the perfume has penetrated his own skin.

One thing to know about Seungmin is that he hates not understanding. He will ask questions, make the researches, works the extra time if he has to. But he will get it. Whatever it might be. Usually it is school works, because ever since he has entered Hogwarts it had been his priority (obsession some might said). In exchange he keeps on being the best student, one of them at least, except in potions. Which makes no sense because potions surely is one of the most rational subject they have. Follow the instructions. Choose the right ingredients. Dont miss a step. And follow again the instructions.

The things Seungmin should be the best at! Not that he does not succeed. He just does not succeed enough. And Seungmin really wants to be a healer at St Mungo, he does not need to be good at potions. He needs to be excellent.

Except he is not and apparently books could only tell as much as they can - the disappointment he had felt upon noticing that is still indescribable - so he had gone to the only option left. Ask for help. Slytherin this year were no exception to the unspoken rule of them being the best in potions, in the person of Hwang Hyunjin who was mostly knows for his quidditch skills (Seungmin had had many opportunities to admire... notice those skills through the years).

Another thing about Seungmin is that he definitely lacks people skills, and because Ravenclaw do not share their potion class with Slytherin, he had no reason to ask Hyunjin for help. He knew from other shared times that Hyunjin is a very nice and approachable person, only has the looks of the mean cliché Slytherin but he's heard one day one of his friends telling him he could have been sorted at Hufflepuff and he agrees. Because when Seungmin suddenly showed up and ask for help to that boy he has barely talked to all their years, the boy smiled and said of course.

All that happened last year. When they were studying for their O.W.L.S and Seungmin wanted to make sure he got a O. And he got it because Hyunjin was a very good teacher, very patient, nice and funny. Even if he would often stumble on his words, somehow always made his point very clear. Plus he knew Hyunjin made space for him in his schedule which was already busy with quidditch practices, so for that Seungmin was grateful.

By the end of the year Seungmin knew he had made a friend. Which had not been the case since his first year. This plus the O.W.L.s results, his fifth year was a success. He really thought it would be the end of their lessons but it was Hyunjin who came back to him and asked him if he wanted to continue. He said yes because he genuinely enjoyed it and, if he was being honest with himself, he was scared he would have no reason to hang out with Hyunjin if not. And he really liked hanging out with Hyunjin.

This is how they ended up making amortentia from scratch on a Tuesday evening, because Seugmin completely failed making the mixture during his class in the morning.

"I'm sure it worked," Hyunjin insists, "everything seems fine."

"I cant smell anything," Seungmin tells him.

Hyunjin frowns, "get closer."

Seungmin does so, even if it is useless. He takes a deep breath it but once again all he can smell is Hyunjin's perfume. Floral, probably with lavender undertones, and a bit overwhelming at first but comforting. He shakes his head.

"Do you smell anything?" He asks his surrogate teacher.

This time he does notice the blush on Hyunjin's face.

"I do," he mutters.

Seungmin's never been a really into gossiping, he hates personal question about himself so he does not pry.

"Well, that does not make any sense," he mumbles almost to himself, "go away for a bit, please."

"What?" Hyunjin chokes up.

"I didnt mean it like that... just can you go to the other side of the room so I can focus."

If the request is odd to Hyunjin he does not protest it and do as told. Seungmin stares at the pretty forms the steam makes above the pearly mixture for a moment, deep into focusing on his senses. He closes his eyes to make sure of it. Hyunjin is not in his personal space anymore so there is no reason for his perfume to linger that much, at least he hopes so. He gets closer and closer to the potion but his nose only picks up the same scent over and over. When he opens his eyes back he is frustrated and it probably shows.

"What's going on?" Hyunjin asks him, worry in his voice tone.

"Its just all I can smell is your perfume and I dont get..."

He stops his sentence when he sees the look on Hyunjin's face, the way his blush expanded and his eyes were round. There is a moment of silence during which Seungmin is not really sure what switches in the air what kind of tension gets itself comfortable between them, nor why does it mean. Things in their relationship have always been very easy, even with Seungmin struggling in social interactions, even during the very first lesson Hyunjin had easily broken the glass between them and made Seungmin very comfortable. There is no overthinking when he is with him. It is so relaxing, so freeing.

"Seungmin," Hyunjin eventually says and it is obvious he is trying to suppress a smile on his lips, "you're the smartest person I know... but..."

Seungmin opens his mouth to protest whatever is coming after the "but".

Hyunjin shakes his head and comes back to his previous place, close, very close to Seungmin. It shuts him up because suddenly everything is different.

He sees the look in Hyunjin's eyes, the way their hands could brush against each other if they decided to, and Seungmin is paralyzed.

"I think the potion works very well because I can smell the scent of old books in the library and sugar quills."

This time Seungmin feels himself blushing. Hyunjin always buys for him sugar quills if he goes to honeydukes without him, because Seungmin likes them so much. They are basically just sugar but the way they taste and feel are very calming somehow. He has never really thought a lot about Hyunjin's actions, just categorized him as the nice kind of persons who care a lot about everything and remember little stuff. He never thought it was something special. Just something endearing about Hyunjin like so many things.

"Uh.." he clears his throat. He never is at loss of words, he knows so many words!

Hyunjin smirks and Seungmin tries to look away but Hyunjin is too close and he is everywhere in his personal space and field of vision. It is overwhelming but he does not not like it. He just does not know how to respond to it. And he is still not sure he understands it. While Hyunjin seems to understand everything. That is embarrassing.

"I really thought I was obvious and that you were acting like it was nothing because you were being polite and you didnt want to embarrass me..."

Hyunjin is slightly taller than him, he has noticed, just a few centimeters really nothing in their day to day life but right now as Hyunjin very carefully moves his head closer to Seungmin's, he feels so tiny.

"But you were just very oblivious !" Hyunjin concludes with a smile, "because you are so smart, I never thought it could be that."

"Book smart and emotions smart are different things," he breathes out.

Hyunjin laughs and it makes Seungmin's heart race. He always seems to manage to make Hyunjin laughs so brightly like that, when he has never been known to be a particularly funny person.

"That's right," Hyunjin tells him, "so I'm going to ask you then. Seungmin, do you, perhaps, like me more than just a friend?"

Seungmin knows very well that his entire face is red by now, "I never.. thought about it," he confesses.

Hyunjin smiles very gently, "I did. I actually thought about it so much I lost sleep over it because all I could think about was you and how much I like you."

Seungmin's ears are ringing and he can only hear the loud beating of his own heart, "you did..."

Hyunjin once again looks at him with those doe beautiful gentle eyes and smiles softly and Seungmin feels like he is both melting and burning.

"This might be a bit overwhelming, so..." Hyunjin says and his voice is a little less confident than before, "maybe you can think about it and I can take you out on a date this Saturday at hogsmeade... and if you dont like me then I'll never bother you again with my feelings."

"That's.... thats a very good idea."

The face Hyunjin makes is better than any academic success, Seungmin thinks.

Meeting Up with Mokuba

Summary: You try to meet up with Mokuba Kaiba while both of you are visiting Osaka, Japan. Unfortunately, the plans for your outing may need to be abandoned due to unforeseen circumstances. Dub canon plus a version of DSOD. Female Reader. Set maybe two years post DSOD. Fun fact: I always write my Reader character based off of myself or someone I know. This means she may not be as generic as is customary for this type of story. Each reader also has a specific place in the Yu-Gi-Oh world, and is basically an OC with set connections and feelings about the various canon characters and other reader characters. This is reader V, who is dating Joey Wheeler and acting as his manager. She is a bit anxious and has two sisters—one older, one younger. In addition, she actively dislikes Seto Kaiba, and even runs a Twitter account dedicated to playfully making fun of him. Y/n refers to you, the reader. S/n refers to the name of your older sister.

Word count: 3,140 You entered the front door of the hotel at the address Mokuba had given you. White stone covered the walls, diamonds coated a silvery tree sitting on a table in a room just past the doors, and the floor was a polished black reflecting light from above. You felt underdressed. Looking around the entrance for Mokuba, you wished the two of you had arranged to meet outside the building. A sharply dressed woman approached, “Are you looking for someone?” asked the employee, her English understandable, but accented. You had hoped to avoid talking to any employees, but it was unavoidable now, especially since you didn’t see Mokuba. “Yes, I’m here to meet Mokuba Kaiba.” It felt strange to give his full name, almost as strange as being in a place this fancy. “And what is your name?” the employee gave a professional smile.

Smiling back, You gave your name, hoping you hadn’t messed up somehow and come to the wrong hotel. Before your worries could grow, the employee was gesturing you further into the building, saying Mokuba had alerted the staff to expect your arrival. This was not the low key situation you had hoped for. After handing you a note, the woman led you to the elevator, explained how to get to Mokuba’s room, and asked if you needed any further assistance. Trying to act like you belonged here, you shook your head, and the employee walked away. 

Relief washed over you as the elevator doors closed. The note was from Mokuba, explaining how to get to his room. Excellent, you could already feel the instructions given by the staff member seeping out of your head. Plush ropes hung across the walls, taking the place of the metal rails you were accustomed to in elevators. Behind one of the red ropes was a floor-to-ceiling mirror. During the long ride up, you admired your reflection in the mirror. Your crop top and skort looked cute. Wildly out of place, but cute. If only the humid Japanese summer was kinder to your hair—but weather like this always fought to turn your head into a curly mess. Eventually, the doors slid open, and you stepped tentatively into the hallway. Referring once again to the note with Mokuba’s room number, you looked forward to your fun day together. You and Mokuba had been friends for a few years now, meeting up sporadically, and although he was four years younger than you, it was an easy fact to forget. When the two of you got together, he usually dragged you into one of his little schemes; and you were a woman who could appreciate well-intentioned manipulation. As you approached his room, you heard Mokuba’s voice float into the hallway. The door was cracked open. Beside it was another, smaller door, perhaps it was used for deliveries of some sort. “Abukom is my company, Seto. I can handle this on my own.” It sounded like the start of an argument. “I don’t recall our stepfather forcing you to learn any Japanese. You’ll need me to interpret.”

You almost winced at hearing Kaiba’s voice. You had expected him to be out for the day. Mokuba countered, “I already hired an interpreter. Besides, all I’m doing is meeting with a manga author to discuss bringing her onto our team to write a new Capsule Monsters series.” “I managed to cancel my plans with Pegasus this afternoon, so I’ll come with you any—” “Not a chance.” Mokuba was emphatic. “The woman I’m meeting with is famously shy, and I won’t have you showing up and scaring her away.” “I wouldn’t—” “Yes you would. You’d sit there scowling like you just broke your leg. Or you’d aggressively ask a question about her work, and before you know it, she’d be backing out of the deal.” “You’re exaggerating.” “No, you just don’t want to admit your aura of intimidation isn’t always useful, Seto. And you don’t know how to reliably turn it off.” “Don’t insult me, Mokuba.” “I’m not! It’s a useful quality about you, but it’s not great for what I’m doing today.” “Hmph, we can’t all get what we want with puppy dog eyes.” “Yeah, that mainly works on you.” “Really?” Kaiba’s voice was quieter, almost surprised. “Seriously? Seto, do you honestly think I ran Kaiba Corp for all those months you were away—with puppy dog eyes?!” “Of course not.” Kaiba snapped back. “Good.” You stood out in the hallway, wondering what you should do. While this was extremely interesting, it was also a private conversation you were not supposed to listen to. And it sounded like maybe Mokuba wasn’t going to be available to take you anywhere after all. Should you send him a message canceling your plans and walk away? You didn’t want to explore the city alone, but Joey was already busy this afternoon playing an escape room with Yugi and your older sister. Inside the hotel room, Mokuba broke the awkward silence. “You know, Seto, you could try to convince me you’re learning to restrain yourself when you need to.” His voice was wheedling, almost cheerful. “How?” Kaiba sounded suspicious. “You could go out with y/n—” Kaiba interrupted so quickly he almost sounded panicked, “No.” Out in the hall, you stood frozen. You had almost gasped aloud at hearing the suggestion.  “Not on a date,” Mokuba clarified, “but to have fun.” “No.” “Well, you might not have fun, but y/n would.” “No.”

For once, you agreed with Kaiba. The two of you had a tacit agreement to ignore each other whenever you met—and since you and Mokuba had been working behind the scenes to help your older siblings become friends for a couple of years now, you and Kaiba utilized this methodology frequently. “Please, Seto? I promised to spend the day with y/n before this opportunity for my publishing house came up. And I don’t want to leave her alone.” Kaiba sighed. “Go play with your little friend, and I’ll represent you at your meeting.” “Nope. Business comes first, and I’m the better man for the job.” “And you think I’m the best choice to entertain y/n?” “Of course not. You’re the only choice.” “I don’t see why your scheduling conflict is my problem.” Kaiba’s voice was cold. You leaned over to peer through the cracked door. Unfortunately, the gap was only an eighth of an inch wide at best, and you couldn’t see anything other than a vague sense of brown. It sounded like the occupants were close to the door, perhaps one of them had been about to leave when their argument began. “It’s not. I just thought I could count on you to do a favor for me.” Kaiba didn’t respond. “Please, Seto? I promised s/n I’d take care of her little sister today, and I don’t want to let her down.” “Fine.” Kaiba’s voice was clipped, “We wouldn’t want you to disappoint my replacement.” “Your replace—is that how you think I see s/n? As your replacement?” Mokuba’s quiet voice certainly made you feel his hurt, even if it flew over Kaiba’s head. “Anyone in my position would feel the same.” Kaiba’s voice was quiet too. You leaned closer to the crack, trying to catch a glimpse of the conversation; things were getting interesting. “Are you here to visit one of the Kaibas?” asked a polite male voice from behind you. You jumped. Whirling around, you saw a Japanese man dressed in a dark blue suit with subtle pinstripes and golden designs on the sleeves. In his hands, he held a pair of black shoes. “Yes, Mokuba invited me.” You internally cringed at how suspicious you must have looked just now. And the two brothers had fallen silent inside their room, which meant they were probably overhearing your conversation as well. With practiced precision, the man slid open the smaller door beside you, placing the shoes on a carpeted shelf. “It can be intimidating to knock on a hotel door, but I believe you will find it to be the most effective method of gaining entrance.” The man’s smile was gentle, as though trying to calm your nerves. Sliding shut the little door, he gave you a small bow and knocked on the slightly open door with the knuckle of his middle finger. After a delay you were almost sure must have been for show, Mokuba opened the door. “Y/n! Glad you could make it!” Whatever angst he had been feeling a moment ago seemed to have fallen away. “Thank you so much for helping my friend,” Mokuba addressed the man beside you, who again bowed and walked off, the soft carpet absorbing the sound of his footsteps. It had been a few months since you last saw Mokuba in person. His thick, unruly hair had been combed into its closest approximation of tidiness, and you could swear he hadn’t been the same height as you last time the two of you met. While you waffled in the doorway, you took in his formal clothes, a white suit jacket worn open over a light green shirt and darker green vest. “Come on in,” his smile was infectious.

Stepping inside, your eyes scanned the room for Kaiba, who was lowering himself down onto one of the couches. At first glance, you almost mistook him for someone else; without his ridiculous long vest and armbands, he looked almost like a normal person. Almost. Those glaring blue eyes could only belong to Seto Kaiba. Still, seeing him like this, in nothing but a tight, high necked, black shirt and matching dress pants felt… intrusive, like you were dangerously close to realizing he was human underneath all the bright LEDs and sarcasm he usually sported.

No, you liked to think of Kaiba as an alien who happened to share a lot of interests with your older sister. “Are you ready to go, Mokuba?” you asked.

“About that…” Mokuba dragged you to the corner of the room furthest from his older brother. You looked around curiously as he did so. The whole place was a lot less flamboyant than you had imagined, with light tan walls, medium tan carpet that contained a raised floral pattern in the same color, and dark accents—like the brown marble fireplace and darker brown coffee table. Nearby, the two couches were both velvety black, with bright purple and cream accent pillows, it all felt tasteful and understated; Kaiba must have hated the place.

“I’m really sorry,” Mokuba looked at the floor, and you noticed he wasn’t wearing shoes, “but a great opportunity came up about thirty minutes ago, and I have to take it.”

Having already overheard his conversation, you knew there was no talking him out of it. You asked a few polite questions about the situation, pretending not to already know why he was ditching you. That’s when he hit you with his horrible plan, “So I thought Seto could take you out this afternoon instead.”

“No way.” You crossed your arms.

“I know you don’t wanna see Osaka by yourself, and I thought spending a day with you would be good for my brother.”

“Not a chance.”

“Please, y/n? He said he’d do it, and he needs practice at interacting with, um, people like you.”

You raised your eyebrows at his choice of words.

“You know, regular people. People who don’t know anything about Duel Monsters and holograms, and aren’t super smart. Uh,” Mokuba facepalmed, “I mean, you’re plenty smart, but compared to someone like Seto, you’re not at his level, you know?” Mokuba fiddled with the buttons on his vest.

“Yeah, I know. But I don’t see why I should spend my afternoon having your brother insult my intelligence.” You glared over Mokuba’s shoulder at Kaiba, who was watching your conversation from the couch. Realizing your posture was an uncomfortable match to his, you uncrossed your arms. “He won’t.” Mokuba gave you a confident grin, “That’s our deal—he’ll take you to the store I was going to take you to, and cooperate, and be nice, and buy you a gift.” “I didn’t agree to that,” Kaiba spoke up from the couch. “It was implied,” Mokuba replied with unshakable confidence. You had seen this level of assurance from your own younger sister; maybe the youngest child got their way in every family. “Come on, Mokuba, I can’t afford to let him buy me anything. There’s no way I’m going to let myself owe your brother.” You gestured at Kaiba, but kept your voice down so he couldn’t hear, “You guys are out of my price range, literally.” “You like free stuff, but you don’t like gifts?” Mokuba sounded like he was teasing you, “Girls make no sense.” “I don’t enjoy feeling like I owe someone, especially not rich, arrogant businessmen.” You raised your voice to ensure Kaiba heard your putdown.    “You won’t owe either of us anything, but I’ll owe you a favor if you do this for me.” You sighed. If you were going to ruin your own day like this, then you would see how far you could push to get something out of it. “I want your brother to buy me lunch.” “Sure.” Mokuba grinned like he had won a game you didn’t know the two of you were playing. “And we’ll reschedule for another afternoon this week.” You added conspiratorially, “We have business of our own to attend to, after all.”      

Mokuba giggled. “So, you’ll spend the afternoon with my brother, he’ll be nice to you, buy you lunch and a present to take home, we’ll get together later, and I’ll owe you one. Deal?” You glanced at Kaiba, and the two of you shared a look of resignation. Suspecting you would regret it, you held out a hand to Mokuba. “Deal.” You shook on it, and grinned, “I get to annoy your brother as much as I want, right?”

“Of course. I didn’t hear Seto make any terms to the contrary.” “They were implied.” Kaiba glared at the back of his brother’s head. “We were clearly stating our terms, you should have spoken up.” Mokuba grinned at you. “I didn’t think I needed to, since your little friend is such a good person.” Kaiba’s voice dripped sarcasm as he crossed his legs and stretched his arm out along the top of the couch. “I’m sure she would never irritate others on purpose, right, y/n?”

“Of course not! I don’t annoy people for fun.” You planted a hand on your hip, “But you’re a special exception.”

“How so?”

You tilted your head, “I’m still not convinced you’re human.” You internally braced yourself for a negative response to your flippant attitude.

Kaiba held his tongue and rolled his head, like an exaggerated form of rolling his eyes.

Mokuba headed back across the room to open the little door to the compartment the butler had placed his shoes inside. Plopping down on the soft carpet, he jammed one of his feet into a shoe. “I’ll expect a full report about your time together.”

“From me?” you asked.

“From both of you.” After a moment, Mokuba jumped to his feet, ready to go. “I’ll have the hotel call me a cab, so you can have Roland for the afternoon.”

You and Kaiba said nothing. “Right, I’m off. Follow the deal. Y/n, try to treat Seto like a normal person, okay?”

Nodding, you agreed, already realizing that treating Kaiba the same way you treated everyone else would irritate him to no end.

“Have fun!” Mokuba waved, and then he was gone, leaving a sea of awkwardness in his absence.

After an abysmally long silence, Kaiba sighed. “I’ll get dressed, and we’ll head out.”

“What do you mean, ‘get dressed?’ Can’t you dress like someone normal for once?”

“We both know I’m not normal.”

“Whatever. But no duel disk.”

“Fine.” Kaiba pushed himself up from the couch and headed towards another door, which you assumed led to a bedroom.

You thought about sitting down on the other couch, but stayed where you were. You didn’t belong here. Touching anything felt like overstepping your boundaries. “Don’t celebrities have to hide their identity when they go out?” You raised your voice and hoped Kaiba would hear.

“I’m not a celebrity; I’m a businessman.” Kaiba’s voice was muffled by the closed door between you. After a moment, the door swung open, and he stepped through, now wearing a long white vest. “I don’t hide.”

At least he wasn’t wearing any LEDs, or those ridiculous blue straps on his arms and legs. Kaiba stared at you for a moment, then headed back into the bedroom. Hesitantly, you stepped closer, catching a glimpse of a pair of slept-in beds and a window with a beautiful view overlooking Osaka. Kaiba opened the drawer to one of the nightstands and pulled out a box. Unexpectedly tossing you a small round disk from inside it, he ordered, “Keep that on your person as long as you’re my responsibility.” You picked the silvery disk up from the floor where you had batted it when it was thrown at you. As your fingers brushed up against the carpet, you wished your own bedroom floor was this soft. Turning the quarter-sized object over in your hand, you saw one side bore the Kaiba Corp logo, and the other was crossed by thin, jagged lines which faintly glowed blue. “What is this?” “It’s a tracking tile.” Kaiba opened another, larger metal case on his nightstand, and pulled out what looked like two dark silver halfpipes side by side. As he closed it over his left forearm, the sleek device made a faint hissing noise. You recognized it as one of his usual, gauntlet type thingymajigs. Sliding his fingers along the surface, a hologram screen sprang to life above the device. With a flurry of finger movements, Kaiba navigated through a few screens, then shut off the hologram.

You thought about protesting. You didn’t love the idea of letting Kaiba pull up your precise location at any time, but also knew well enough why he might want to—Mokuba may have reached a point of being blasé about getting kidnapped, but you hadn’t. But where to put the tracker? Your purse seemed inadequate. You didn't want it to scratch your phone screen. Stepping back into the living room, you slipped the slender device into your bra, feeling the cool metal against your skin and hoping this was all overkill.

Kaiba strode out into the room after you, now wearing both of his gauntlets. “Let’s get this over with.” He headed out the front door without looking back. You followed, hoping you wouldn’t regret agreeing to spend the afternoon with him. Oh well, at least you could get some great stories out of this.

Cha Hae In: A small introspective on her character (+Goto Ryuji)

Gotta love how her entire character in the game is just "Imma be the very best and no one can stop me" and I love her for that.

On another note she does give me a lot of "Main Character" vibes due to that attitude and the power she displays. Sure she technically got lucky with her power but she still wants to be at the very top of her team by more than just luck alone. As we see with how she has been diligently training with Song Chi Yul despite being an S rank, and she knows her weaknesses very well despite Chi Yul praising her as her student (that she has a long way to go). She is ambitious in her goals and no matter what she gets she will not discard it any way. She is also willing to sacrifice her pain if it means getting what she wants as seen inside the dossiers themselves:

In dossiers 1 and 2 they also tell about how her whole life she had been walking on eggshells and her reputation was always on the constant brink between bad and good, so I could guess that is why (plus her smell problem) we never really saw her smiling outside of the people she was close too (Jin Woo and Chi Yul). The light novel also hints that with Jin Woo she also finally founded some relaxation in her life which only adds on more to the theory that she only cared more about winning, or in her case hunting, than she did about actually living a comfortable life. Probably the only way she could find happiness was by winning.

Her parents, if she had any (most of the dossiers just say 'adults around her') had pressured her to put herself in the spotlight, and she does seem to have at least some spine to reject that at her young age, however it didnt mean that she was able to overcome all of that. The photo above said she still remained strong despite all the anonymous flase rumors spread about her, all the pressure from the adults and the stains from anti-fans on her achivements, but her achievements still dissappeared and she felt resentful about that day for a long time.

Right now as an S rank she does look a lot more capable to stand up for herself rather than simply ignoring the counts and moving on, heck she even values herself to an extent seeing that she tends to confront her guild master about the shares and even bussiness men know her worth would go up much higher than the other guilds if she were to set up a guild on her own:

The mention of being inspired by the other atheletes is also something really cool since it does add well with what her main goal, apart from passion, is in her life and that is, as mentioned in the twitter posts, to achieve victory, to be the first.

And this is what makes it all the better for me to say that, she acts a lot like Goto Ryuji.

No, I didnt expect that either and yes im being legit, both of them share a lot of common trains the more we get to find out about theirselves.

For starters: Its that driving ambition to do what they are good at and excell that makes them such a strong force of power in their own respective countries. Just as Hae-In had been ambitious to persue swordsmanship and become the strongest S rank in South Korea, Goto had done the same thing by assosiating himself with the Japanese Hunters Assosiation and gaining the rest of his powerhouse with the other 10 S ranks that he admitted to his guild. He got to be the founder of the second largest guild in Asia while she got to be famous despite being in the Shadow of Choi Jong In (honestly I might even go far enough to say she was the reason Choi Jong In had been nicknamed the ultimate weapon, since he held the strongest S rank in his arsenal.) But still strong enough to decapitate the S rank Queen, yes even with the help of her own team and the japanese but that is still quite a feat considering the last 3 jeju island raids.

None of them tend to be the strongest overall, bc National Hunters exist ofc, but that doesnt stop them to aim higher. Hae-In we can see her aspiration to become first right in the dossiers, where as Goto had more ambition in wanting to be the king, and basically become the best despite the fact that there would be stronger hunters out there.

Both of them also seem to never back down even against powerful threats like the Ant King. Its kinda funny how it tends to be that Goto is the only one called cocky for this because, 1 he died, and 2 he was more of a villain instead of the female lead like Hae-In, yet when she wanted to fight shadow Beru she wasn't laughed about it for doing it. Sure Jin Woo was there to stop it, but that didnt meant anything still when she knew, first hand, she could have been defeted by Beru nonetheless (and she also didnt know that Beru would be less stronger than the Ant King as extracted shadows tend to be weaker), she actively chose to fight Beru for her own gains, yes far better gains than Goto's yet that doesnt ignore the fact that their attitudes had been the same when facing that giant monster. Pretty sure Goto would have also tried to fight Beru again in order to prove his strenght (but Beru is best girl for a reason, he wont fall under anyone unless its his master.) Had he lived.

There are more physical traits, like both of them being sword masters and having a more profesional stoic attitude towards their personality than others— but i did just wanna draw out those two main characteristics of theirs that literally just passed through my head as I was re reading the novel. The smaller differences would be their reason for their ambitions, like with Goto betraying the S ranks for power and prestige, whereas Hae-In does everything for her own power to protect those around her, i.e why she always looks out for the dungeon boss and takes patrols even on her lunch, why she is also very keen in finding out more about the new S rank who doesnt smell, and why she never really kept a lot of secrets to her, she was never going to hide anyways because her main priority at that point in being an S rank was helping people, and being the most powerful just meant she could protect them even better.

Still, it does seem funny that the ones that share a lot of similar traits with each other are: The female lead of SL, and the literal most hated character (by the author) of SL.

Gotta love that for them, gotta love it even more how Hae-In was acknowledged by Goto, which does make me want to explore their dynamic a bit. Would Goto have offered her to join the guild? Would Hae In have acted more like Goto if she had been more upfront towards the spotlight? Would they have bonded over their share hatred against the Ant King? Them batteling by pure measure of swordmanship skill alone would have been fairly interesting too.
