@zutaraweek Day 1: Home
Happy Zutara Week 2023, Everyone!!
(I'm still in the midst of a stubborn art block, but I didn't want to let that stop me from participating in the most beloved of fan weeks. I fought myself a lot in making this comic and I'm not sure I won, (I swear it was cooler in my head) but I'm tired of staring at it and at this point, I'd rather have it done than perfect. (making it perfect would involve starting over, so.))
I hope you all enjoy the fluffiness and have a wonderful Zutara Week filled with glorious fics and art and general bliss! <3

@zutaraweek Day 2: Solstice
I think they’d be the type to celebrate in a very simple, intimate way like watching the Southern Lights together ❄️
Decided to give it a modern twist because I love modern AUs

Zutara Week 2023
Day 7
Prompt: Flow
(3/3)
“Tui and La... have always circled each other in an eternal dance.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the little bastard of these two:
ZK Week 2020 Day 7: Rebirth ZK Mini Bang 2021: Never too late to fall in love (again)
Aaaaand... that’s it.
That was my contribution to this year's Zutara Week. I feel like there were little things I improved on and I'm happy with that.

Announcement going forward: Due to DeviantArt’s loud stance on Generative AI and general mismanagement as an artistic community over the past decade, Zutara Week will no longer be hosted on their platform.
The continuation of our yearly tradition will still take place on our main socials here on X, Instagram, and Tumblr—but we are currently in the process of creating our own space to serve as an archive of all past works.
This is in hopes of having one central Zutara Week resource that the community can access without having to log in to our various socials!
Stay tuned for future announcements regarding this, and the upcoming Zutara Week dates for 2024!
Thank you all for sticking around!

Home
For years, Zuko had been desperate to go home. The first time he'd gotten his wish, it had been like putting on clothes that no longer fit. He couldn't move comfortably. Breathing was a struggle. He itched from all the eyes he felt watching him surreptitiously.
The months he'd spent on the run with Aang and the others was a better fit. Once he'd been accepted, he'd experienced more warmth and camaraderie than he'd ever experienced in his entire life. He had friends. He had someone who understood him, something he hadn't even felt with Uncle. For the first time, he had people he could protect. But it wasn't home. Not quite.
The next time he was back in the Fire Nation was better. He was the Fire Lord now. He was still watched too closely, and it felt for a long time that each new day just brought more trouble. But he loved his people, and he didn't think it was too much to do his best. Gradually, he broke his new robes in, and they even became comfortable (well, his every day robes. The ceremonial ones would always make him want to never wear clothes again). He took comfort in the way the fear drained out of his staff's faces when they saw him, and in the way the Fire Nation citizens began to talk out loud about how the new policies were taking the weight off of their shoulders. It wasn't home, but it was close enough.
Something was missing, and Zuko thought he'd have to go the rest of his life learning to ignore the feeling, like a pebble in a shoe he couldn't take off easily. Then the envoy from the Southern Water Tribe arrived. She stepped off the ship and smiled at him, and Zuko felt something slide into place.

Zutara Week 2023 - Day 1: Home
Her fingertips brush gently across the smooth carved oak surface of the armoire. Each perfectly chosen chisel stroke contributes to the comforting flow of her room. Her eyes drift through the rest of the space; the woodwork meanders like water, curving, ebbing, and eddying throughout the artistry of each piece of furniture. A wardrobe of similar craft sits next to the window. Thick dark curtains are pulled back to let in the evening’s moonlight. Atop luxurious surfaces live small paintings, snapshots of moments in time. The sight of her father, brother, and grandmother’s images ignite her smile. She lets out a contented sigh as her eyes fall on the final frame, a depiction of her husband and two children in front of a beach house.
A stack of carelessly thrown, yet still organized sun hats rest on the corner chair next to the dressing mirror. A light nightgown hangs from there, perched beside its reflection, discarded until its duty is next called. Her smile diminishes marginally as her eyes pan through the rest of the space, realizing the empty feeling in the room filled with things.
Journeying out from the room, she is surrounded by ornamental purple silks mingled with reds and some blues decorating the walls. Adopting a leisurely pace while traversing the halls, she recalls the recently changed aesthetic. Gone is the darkness and overbearing decoration, in favor of more open space, room to breathe. The hallways are more well-lit and brighter, such a change from the dark overbearing presence the place held when she first arrived.
Stopping before a large set of doors, she thinks back. She’s called many places around the world temporary houses, from the South and North Poles, to the back of Appa, to a house in the upper ring of the Earth Kingdom. She frowns at the lack of permanence any of them held.
Pushing the doors open, she is greeted by streams of cool moonlight filtering through the yet unblossomed fruit trees of the gardens. Walking out toward the glistening pool that houses her husband’s favorite small animal friends, she hears laughter and giggling floating across the garden. The sound is contagious, and she finds herself smiling as she rounds the corner.
The familiar voice of her love calls out to her, “Katara?”
It is followed quickly by excited yelps and screeches as her children cry out “Mom!”
She feels her cheek muscles stretch and begin to hurt as her kids rush over and hug her. She closes her eyes and takes in the feeling, drinking it in as if it would disappear the next moment.
The strong arms of the Fire Lord embrace her as he looks at her questioningly. “Weren’t you supposed to be in Ba Sing Se until next week?”
She gazes back into his golden eyes and leans into his hug. “We finished up business early.” Giving only a momentary pause, she places a loving peck on his lips. “Besides, I missed all of you. I missed this place. I missed home.”

Zutara Week 2023
Day 1
Prompt: Home
(1/3)
[ID: This situation could have happened before or after they started their relationship… or both, you decide. Personally, I like to think that before starting their relationship, Zuko screamed internally like a fangirl when he had the slightest physical contact with Katara, even if she only praised him. Because obviously he was the one who fell in love first. I have no proof but no doubt either.]

☾𖤓 Zutara Week 2023 – Respite 𖤓☽
Once Zuko was settled in the Western Air Temple, Katara came to threaten him, yet… For a moment, there was a respite from her icy glare. Where he had hope.

Union
Zuko knew what his father was hoping when he sent his son to the warehouse. Sozin, Inc. had, after all, a long vibrant history of union busting. Now that Zuko was graduated with his master's in business, Ozai had pressed his son into service to "prove that degree wasn't as useless as the paper it was printed on". Zuko had seen his father's tactics in action. Physical violence against strikers was no longer legal, but he could fire them all and hire replacements. Or so Ozai thought.
The union leader seemed to be waiting for Zuko when he arrived. He knew her, though he doubted his father was aware of that when he gave his son this task. Katara Imiq had been a persistent problem for Zuko since he'd met her in ethics class years ago. Her eyes were cold and sharp, and despite the fact that she was perched atop a desk with her legs crossed in a deceptively casual attitude, everything about how she carried herself said she was ready for a fight. Zuko, however, didn't come to fight. Instead he held up a stack of papers for Katara to look over, and he had the pleasure of watching her icy exterior melt first in confusion as she read. Then she looked up, and her eyes gleamed with malicious glee. Zuko had just handed her everything the union needed to take down Sozin, Inc.
"Why are you giving this to me?" she asked Zuko. Her brow was drawn down in confusion, and her mouth was pursed into a little pout. Zuko swallowed hard. Then he shrugged. He'd known from their first heated debate in class, when her fierce gaze landed him, that he never stood a chance against that passionate, intense, scary, beautiful force of nature. If it took burning down his family's tainted legacy for him to have any hope of a shot with her, so be it. Besides...
"It's the right thing to do."
Katara looked him over, sizing him up, or looking for any signs of insincerity. Zuko tried not to shift under her gaze, determined she would see nothing but his resolve. Still, he could barely hide the shiver that ran down his spine when her eyes met his, and a slow smile spread over her face. Finally, Katara stood up and held her hand out to him.
"Welcome to the team, Zuko."

Zutara Week 2023 - Day 2: Solstice
106 AG Winter Solstice
These four years have flown by at an unimaginable pace. I thought the two years I had spent with Aang had gone quickly. How foolish I was in that time. Oh how life was simpler back then…more dangerous, but simpler. Where would we find dinner? Where would we sleep? Would we be ambushed by someone trying to kill us? Would we survive the end of summer?
Now it's just meetings with foreign dignitaries each morning, and sit-ins with policy advisors in the afternoons. Do I prefer one life over the other? Of course, after all, these meetings are higher stakes. I’ve always wanted to make positive impacts on the world, and I finally can. Me. I’m making changes. The burgeoning Republic City was my idea, but no one needs to know that but me. Let Zuko and Aang have their glory for that one.
After everything, I made my choice. Zuko never had my heart early on, certainly not right at the start. He was bull headed, stubborn as a mooselion, and was actively trying to ruin the world’s only chance of a bright future. But…fate has a funny way of working. He became one of my closest friends after abandoning the future his nation chose and finding his way to us, though not without trying his best to make it up to everyone. I was the last to officially warm up to him, but truth be told, I was too hard on him back then. My heart hurt, and still does for how I treated him.
Funny how fate works. My husband and I just set up camp at the end of an extended hike through the South Pole tundras. I forced him to wear heavy furs in spite of his insistence that he didn’t need them. He was glad for them in the heavy winds. I made sure he knew that I knew I was right. Inner fires can only keep someone warm in this cold for so long.
We made it to the sacred spot my family always journeyed to on this night when I was growing up. A mountain of ice, trapped far inland and capped by snow, hid a cave for decades that only my family knew of. I took this man into the caves, and at midnight, as the moon reached its zenith, the lights began to appear. Fairy lights, we called them, reflected off every crystal within the cave. I drew him further into the cavern, to the end of a winding tunnel.
I introduced him to the pool of sacred water, the shrine upon which it was built, and the gateway to the sky above. Multicolored light rained through the skylight reflecting the dancing aurora from above off the water’s surface. We sat in silence for what felt like hours. The first moments of the solstice passed. The closeness was tremendous. I could feel my ancestors around us, looking upon who I had become, and who I was with. I just knew they were smiling.
We begin our journey back to reality tomorrow. Three days of hiking, then four by airship back home. Luncheons with dignitaries, dinners with advisors, evenings with him. Life could honestly not be much better. The future is bright.
~Master Katara, Fire Lady
