You know, I was thinking about the fact that according to the behind the scenes featurette for The Last of Us series, they changed the infection vector of the cordyceps fungus from the spores to the mycelia, which makes sense and good on them for doing that. Spores as the vector made no sense. If all you needed was to get the spores in your body to get infected, everyone would get infected just by breathing.

But I digress. This isn't actually about The Last of Us. That's just what got me thinking about the various infection vectors of various zombie movies/TV series.

In Z Nation, the basic premise (IIRC - it's been a while since I watched it) is that everyone already has the virus but it doesn't 'activate' until the person dies. They don't really know how or why or what because everything moved so fast at the beginning but they know everyone has the virus. And apart from contemplating how it maintains itself - I'm guessing it uses the immune system, the B and/or T cells to do that so that it doesn't get attacked by the immune system prior to death. But anyway. Again, that's not what I ended up thinking about.

What I got thinking about was this - if, in Z Nation, everyone has the virus, then logically when a woman gets pregnant, the virus must crossover into the foetus. (Wait, I'm talking Z Nation, so I'll use the American fetus instead :P ) And it's not uncommon for a fetus to die in utero. So what happens if a fetus dies in utero? We saw a zombie baby in one of the first couple of episodes of the series but can it occur earlier? Is there a particular stage of development it has to reach for the virus to activate? What happens to the mother if the virus in the fetus does activate? Does the virus have enough 'sense' to allow its host to be born before attacking? Is that even possible? Or does the fetus just start chewing its mother up from the inside?

Now there's a thought that's going to fester.

Zombie! Ghost now doesn’t want to leave you alone because you showed him you can’t take care of yourself. You clearly need him to growl at any approaching man or woman because you can’t stand your ground.

Zombie! Ghost who loves it when it’s maintenance time since your hands are on him when it’s time to fix up. He leans into your touch. His chest lets out a small hum as you did your work.
