Leave it All on the Dance Floor! Part 2 | Alastor x Overlord! Reader
Platonic! Alastor + Best Friend! Reader who's also an overlord.
Description: After having his coat ripped, Alastor enlists the help of his best friend and tailor.
(Notes: CW Alastor, mentions of cannibalism) (Part 2 of Leave it All on the Dance Floor!)
Words: 2508
Part 1
"That new fabric order you wanted just got in, boss!" Joan chirped as she entered your work room; a clipboard in hand. Hearing that made you smile and you looked up from where you'd been drawing out concepts for some new clothes.
"Wonderful!" You exclaimed, "I know you know where to store it for now. I'll get to work on adding that to the new line later." Joan nodded as she crossed the item off her well-organized list. "And how are the newbies doing down there?" You asked, referring to the recently-hired demons currently being trained to work the boutique while you focused on designing.
You'd hoped they wouldn't end up causing much trouble when you took them in; needing the extra employees, but Joan's expression immediately made you lower your hopes.
"They're...Working on it." She replied finally, "But don't worry; I've been dealing with all the customer complaints the way you told me to. We'll get those sinners up to par soon enough, and then you'll be back to having the most well-run boutique in hell!"
At that, you sighed. You were just glad to have Joan to deal with them so you wouldn't have to; after all, you'd been very busy lately.
"Are you still designing the new line?" the feline asked with a hint of concern in her voice. You'd been working on it for the last week almost nonstop, and you knew she was probably a little worried about you. Still, she knew better than to comment about it openly.
"Yes," you replied, setting the drawings on your desk now, "But I should have some solid concepts soon." Joan was still frowning but you ignored her worry as you leaned back in your chair and stretched. You'd been at this all day so you had to admit; it might be a good time to take a short break.
"I'm sure these new designs will be even more lovely than your last ones," you assistant finally spoke as she took another step forward, "But...Uh, there's one other item that could use your attention right now." At that, you raised an eyebrow.
"Oh? What is it?" You asked. Based on her nervous expression, you weren't sure you wanted to hear the answer.
She drew in a breath before glancing back down at her clipboard. "We have a client here who requires repairs on some of their clothes."
"I thought I said I wasn't going to be taking any clients this week?" You replied now, crossing your arms, "Can't one of the apprentices handle it?"
"The client has insisted only your expertise will do," Joan told you, "And frankly, I don't think it's quite my place to refuse." She had a look of fear on her face at that that piqued your interest even more. Who could this client be to have scared even your own assistant so badly? You had a few ideas, and if they turned out to be true, then you almost wanted to smile in delight.
"Alright," you pretended to sigh now, knowing what was up, "Send them in and I'll handle it." Joan nodded quickly before heading over to the door of your workshop, which she opened to reveal a very familiar sinner standing on the other side with a huge smile on his face.
"Why, thank you, my dear!" Alastor told Joan as he took a step into the room. She nodded quickly before leaving and closing the door behind her. Meanwhile, you grinned and stood from your desk.
"Al, what brings you back here already?" You asked, though you couldn't have been more glad to see your best friend back in the Swing Sector visiting you, "Miss me already?" The Radio Demon's smile widened at that and he came over to pull you into a hug.
"Lovely to see you too, my friend!" He exclaimed as you chuckled. "I'm afraid I've come to request your assistance mending some of my clothing, if it's not too much trouble!" You let go of your friend now, raising an eyebrow at his words.
"Of course it's no trouble, but...Surely it's not these clothes you need repaired, right...?" You asked, a dark shadow beginning to form across your face, "After all, I just made this suit for you a couple of weeks ago." Your tone was calm but extremely threatening and despite being the Radio Demon himself, Alastor had to fight the urge to step back. When it came to the clothes you created, you could always be a little...murderous. He almost didn't want to continue with the look in your eye, but nevertheless, he did so.
"Unfortunately, it is," he replied carefully and with a solemn nod of his head. When he saw your expression darken even further though, he quickly continued. "But I assure you, dear, I did everything in my power to avoid letting any harm come to these clothes! This is the result of an...Unfortunate turn of events."
"Who did it?" You asked in a tone so unlike you that it would have made anyone living in your sector shake with fear.
"Alas, I do not remember his name; the forgettable sort." Alastor replied, glad to have shifted the blame off of himself now, "But I assure you, I plan to make him pay for his transgressions." His own expression became scarier now as his eyes began to shift into radio dials and glow red; even more so than normal.
"Give Joan a description of this demon on the way out," you ordered, "I'd also like to have a go at anyone who thinks they can damage my designs and get away with it." Alastor nodded at that, even if only to calm your rising anger.
"Now," you said, taking a deep breath in order to pull yourself from your murderous rage, "Show me the damage." You turned back to grab a tape measure and some sewing pins as Alastor held up the end of his coat, which had been clearly been ripped. Of course, it always gave that appearance, but in this case, the tears weren't how you'd designed them, and therefore, gave a rattier appearance.
You felt your anger nearly flare up again at the sight but calmed yourself as you nodded and then got to work measuring and pinning wherever necessary.
"Good thing I always keep your fabric on-hand," you spoke while holding one of the sewing pins between your teeth, "Otherwise, you'd have had to wait a few weeks for it to get in, and we certainly couldn't have you walking around like this for so long." The Radio Demon nodded, assuming the pose you always had him hold as he let you work.
You'd been his personal tailer ever since the two of you became friends shortly after your own arrival in hell. Before them, he'd had some random sinner off the street make all of his clothes, and as you'd told him the night you ran into each other at that party, it had showed. Luckily, he now had a best friend who was always willing to ensure he was well-dressed; making him a top priority whenever he came in.
For a few minutes, you pinned the fabric in silence as he took in the sights of your workroom. It hadn't changed much in the years since he'd last visited; a realization that was somehow heartwarming.
It was as messy as ever; with various designs lining the walls, fabric strewn about, and several trunks of other sewing supplies pushed up against the tall windows. Your desk was even worse with pins and needles all over it that had been entangled in string, and Alastor knew if he were to ever bring someone like Nifty here, she would have had a field day.
Also resting on your desk, though, were several framed photos. There was one picturing you and Rosie, probably taken sometime after the Radio Demon's disappearance, along with several photos of your various owned souls that had been taken at the parties you hosted. Alastor's smile widened, though, when he noticed several old photos of you and him rested among the rest. Even after all this time, they were well-taken-care-of and free from dust or dirt. The sight was very sweet.
"Did I overhear that you were working on a new line?" He finally asked, breaking the silence as you threaded some red string through a needle like it was nothing.
"Of course," you told him with a grin before kneeling to hand-sew the new fabric of his coat to the ripped area. "I have to stay up to date, don't I? And plus, runway season is coming up."
"Well, then I hope to be in attendance at many of your upcoming fashion shows." Alastor told you and you nodded as you started stitching.
"You'll be the first one invited, of course," you said with a playful eye roll, "Who better than my best friend to witness as I crush Velvette; fashionably?" This made the other overlord's smile widen even more.
"I have no doubt in your creative mind," he replied, "In fact, I daresay her own designs are nowhere near your level, so where's the competition in the first place?" He gave a loud laugh at that and you shook your head with a smile.
"Thanks, Alastor," You said as took out another sewing pin; not needing it anymore, "But it turns out there might actually be some competition this season. The Overlord Gala is being held a month earlier due to the next extermination being moved up- will you be attending, by the way?" You glance dup at your deer-like friend, who immediately nodded.
"But of course! I wouldn't miss such an entertaining event for the world," he replied, placing a hand where his heart should have been, "And I suppose I'll have to be requesting your services for my clothing then, as well." You nodded, turning back to your work.
"Well, anyway," you continued, "The gala is supposed to be competitive as far as fashion this year, and I intend to have the best designs by a landslide. But that all starts with the line I'll be releasing shortly beforehand, so it has to be perfect."
"Of course," Alastor nodded knowingly, "Do let me know if there is anything I can do to assist! Any endeavor that involves putting those arrogant V's in their place is worth supporting. Though, I hardly think you'll require my help schooling Velvette on the runway." You chuckled at that, finally finishing sewing Alastor's coat and tying it off.
"Thanks, Al." You told him now as you stood and brushed yourself off, "I always appreciate your support. And...Your coat is done!" You stepped away now, letting him inspect your work as you began putting away the rest of your materials. The Radio Demon took a second to look it over before his smile widened (somehow), seeming satisfied.
"Perfect as usual, my dear!" He told you as he gave a brief spin for emphasis. "Thank you kindly!"
"Anytime." You replied once you'd put everything away, "Oh, and by the way, are you planning to attend that meeting next week? The one Carmilla sent information about?" A part of you was a little nervous he hadn't been invited for a second, considering the other overlord had never been particularly fond of Alastor, but then his eyes shone with recognition.
"Yes, indeed!" He told you as the two of you started heading out of your workshop now, "Am I correct to assume you'll be there as well?" You nodded and his smile brightened, "Splendid! Then I shall see you at the meeting!"
"Sounds good," you replied, "But before then, make sure you let Rosie know you're back! If you show up to the meeting with no warning she might bite you." You shivered, remembering the last time Alastor had done something to make the kind cannibal overlord angry. You hadn't had bandages on-hand at the time and had had to use whatever fabric you could find just to wrap his wound.
"Of course, of course!" Alastor waved a hand dismissively, which told you he most likely would not be telling Rosie in advance. He always had liked to keep everyone guessing, hadn't he? "Now, I would love to stay longer, but I must be on my way, darling!" He headed over to the counter of your boutique, where one of your newer recruits immediately shrunk away in fear. "And I'd better let you get back to work if you're to show everyone up at the gala!"
You grinned and made your way over to the register, but instead of punching in any amount, you simply leaned your elbows onto it with a smile. "Al, you know I wouldn't make you pay for a simple repair like this," you told him, "if anything, the one paying will be whichever demon ripped your coat in the first place." You were still smiling but your voice got significantly more sinister and your eyes darkened as you spoke the last sentence. The rest of the shop's employees cowered but Alastor just laughed.
"A true gentleman pays his friend for their services, dear." He reminded you but as he spoke, his gaze shifted to the street outside, where a TV in the store across the street happened to be running Vox's broadcast. His smile didn't drop but you could instantly see the shift in his eyes from joy to annoyance at the sight.
And you could understand why. It seemed Vox had caught wind of the fact that the Radio Demon was back, because he was going on and on about Alastor's return and what it meant for the future of hell. You supposed that obsession of his still hadn't died out.
"On second thought, it seems I'll have to be on my way." Alastor practically spat before turning back to you with a joyful expression again, "But do let me know when you're next free, and I'll be sure to treat you to lunch as thanks for your kindness this fine day." You gave him a look so he added, "with vegetarian options, of course." Your grin widened.
Even though you were best friends with both Rosie and Alastor, two of hell's most well-known cannibal demons, you had no interest in partaking in said acts yourself and he could respect that.
"Alright." You said finally as Alastor adjusted his bow tie once more and then turned towards the door. "Nice to see you again!"
"Bye now, dear!" He called back, "Oh, and if you've got the time, consider tuning in to my next broadcast! It's sure to be quite...Entertaining." With that, he was out the door and you shook your head, still smiling. He was no doubt going to clap back at Vox by going on-air for the first time in years, and of course, you weren't about to miss that for anything.
"Joan!" You called, heading back up the stairs to your workshop now, "Would you bring the radio up? I have a feeling this afternoon's work is going to get much more entertaining!"

How I Met Her Mother | Part 2 | Tighnari x Reader
Romantic: Tighnari x Collei's Parent! Reader
Description: When Collei and the traveler discover Tighnari's feelings for her adoptive parent, they make it their mission to get them on a date together through a (maybe unnecessarily) elaborate plan.
(Notes: none) (gender neutral reader) (reader is Collei's adoptive parent) (Part 2 of How I Met Her Mother)
Read Part 1 here!
I didn’t plan to do multiple parts originally but @4o3ok3id you ask and you shall receive! <3
Since you'd moved back to Gandharva Ville, you'd been extremely stressed. Between your work as a doctor, helping your daughter with her own health issues, and trying your best not to inconvenience any of the forest rangers, things could be a lot. However, more recently, you'd started to notice a few of those worries easing, as if someone had been lightening the load on your shoulders.
And, of course, that someone happened to be Tighnari; your close friend from back during your Akadamiya days. You didn't think he was aware of the fact that you'd noticed, but you had. He was always offering to take in some of your extra patients since he had some medical expertise himself, even after you'd essentially become Gandharva Ville's personal doctor. He kept you as updated as possible on Collei's condition so you wouldn't be left worrying in the dark, he let her rest in his own hut on her off-but-not-life-threatening days so you wouldn't have to see it, and the amount of times he'd brought over dinner for the two of you due to having 'made too much for himself' so you wouldn't have to worry about cooking was becoming too much to count.
You were extremely touched by it and always tried your best to repay him for his kind acts, though he rarely ever accepted anything, claiming he 'was just doing his job as head forest ranger.'
You weren't the only one that had started to notice his abnormal kindness towards you and your daughter, though.
"He brought you guys dinner again?!" Paimon exclaimed a little too loudly as she, Collei, and Aether crouched behind some bushes by your house. "That's, like, the third time since we've been visiting!"
"I know," Collei replied, "Master Tighnari is very kind, and I think he can tell how stressed they are. I just wish I could do something to help them too; I hope I don't make them worry too much..." Aether could see the green haired girl starting to look sad and immediately tried to come up with a way to cheer her up. Luckily, though, Paimon seemed to have that covered.
"Collei!" She exclaimed, flying a little closer to the girl while still staying far back enough that she wouldn't accidentally touch her and make her uncomfortable, "Do you realize what this means?!" She got loud again and, momentarily, the rustling in your kitchen nearby stopped. All three of them froze but after a second it continued as you went back to preparing the dinner the forest ranger had brought; seemingly deciding not to investigate the loud noises outside.
Aether shushed the little flying girl as Collei frowned slightly. "...No?" Paimon looked exasperated.
"Do you?!" She asked, turning to the blonde traveler, who shrugged. "Ugh!' Paimon exclaimed, "Isn't it obvious? Tighnari has feelings for Collei's parent! You two are both clueless."
"He...Does?" Collei asked, looking a little confused but the longer she though about it, the more she had to admit that it did add up. Even before you'd adopted her when she was little, there had seemed to be something going on between you two that was different from your friendship with Cyno or anyone else.
"Of course he does!" Paimon replied, "You should have seen the look on his face when he told us how they'd met, Collei! Paimon can't believe she didn't realize it at the time but it all makes sense now!" Beside her, Aether couldn't help but nod in agreement; she had a point.
"...I guess that would explain why he always does so much to help," Collei admitted finally, "And why he seems so much less strict around us than the rest of Gandharva Ville. I always thought it was just because they'd graduated together, but Cyno was in their class too and Master Tighnari is even stricter towards him than anyone here!"
"Exactly!" Paimon exclaimed. This revelation put a smile on Collei's face. After all, you and Tighnari had to be two of her favorite people in the whole world. You'd taken her in when she had nothing; a scared child that was recovering from having the remains of a god essentially exorcised from her body. You were young yourself at the time, and yet you'd agreed to raise her as your own without a second thought.
And then there was Tighnari; the man that had taken her on as a student the second she'd shown an interest in plants and basic level of competence. He'd helped make her who she was today; taught her to fight, empowered her when she felt like she couldn't ever be strong again. He'd even helped stave off the symptoms of her Eleazar alongside you.
The idea of the two of you potentially entering a relationship- or better yet, getting married- made her grin widely. She already saw Tighnari like a second parent with all that he'd taught her, even if she would never be brave enough to tell him that to his face. Having you both as her official parents would be a dream come true, and if it would make you happy, she'd support it without a doubt.
"I hope Master Tighnari tells them about his feelings soon!" She exclaimed excitedly now, "I'm sure they feel the same!"
"Knowing that guy, I wouldn't count on it." Paimon replied with a sigh. But then she seemed to get an idea because she suddenly turned and eyed Aether in a way only a scheming Paimon could. He gave her a 'what are you thinking?' kind of look but she just turned back to Collei. "What if we help them out?" She suggested, making him raise an eyebrow, "There's no way someone like Tighnari would confess to your parent; and especially not if he feels like they're already stressed. But if we nudge them along, maybe we could help them finally admit their feelings!"
There was a pause as Collei seemed to process this. On the one hand, as your daughter, she wanted you to be happy and not have to worry about her so much despite her illness. On the other, she knew it might be wrong to get involved in the situation when it really wasn't her place. After all, it was possible her mentor had his reasons for not admitting his feelings to you yet.
...Unfortunately for Tighnari, though, the first reason won out in her mind and she finally nodded at Paimon. "Alright," she said with a wide, excited grin. "Let's do it. Do you have a plan?"
"You bet Paimon does!" The little pixie exclaimed, motioning for her and the traveler to follow.
Aether couldn't help but feel he'd regret being involved with this later.
..........
"And that's why all of you should take on a little extra work today!" Paimon explained, concluding her longer-than-necessary presentation. The huge group of forest rangers, whom she'd dragged out of their rooms in the dead of night to convince, all looked at her with dead expressions. Beside her, Collei seemed to get a little nervous at the silence.
"Please." She added kindly. The rangers blinked and another silence followed before one raised his hand.
"If we agree will you let us go back to sleep?"
"Yes!" Paimon chirped, making the whole group cheer, "...Quietly!" They immediately silenced their joy before retreating to their rooms to get a few more hours of sleep before the sun would rise. Luckily, Tighnari hadn't been scheduled for any night patrol this evening so if they kept silent enough, he wouldn't realize the entirety of Gandharva Ville had been brought out for a meeting without him.
"I think that went well," Collei smiled as she turned to the pixie and the traveler. Paimon nodded.
"You think they'll follow through with it?" Aether asked. He didn't seem doubtful, though; just curious.
"I do!" Collei replied, "And don't worry, I'll take on some extra work too. Between all of us forest rangers, we should be able to give Tighnari a lot less worry about!"
"Which lets us continue with the next phase of our plan..." Paimon grinned evilly despite the actual act she was doing, which was very selfless.
"Before then, though, we should get some rest." Collei told them, "I'll meet you in the morning for breakfast, where we can continue with the next part of our plan!" They both nodded at that before the group split up and went their separate ways.
What they didn't seem to realize, though, was that their conversation had been overheard by someone whose lips tugged into a grin.
..........
The next morning, Paimon, Collei, and the traveler met bright and early for breakfast. There, they went over their plan while also not-so-casually observing Tighnari from afar as he went about his morning. The other rangers hadn't taken on much of their extra work yet, considering the day had just barely gotten started, but it seemed like the lead ranger was already becoming surprised by just how little he actually needed to get done.
He'd already checked back with one of his patients to find Collei had taken care of them before he could and that one of the nearby withering zones he'd planned on clearing today was already gone.
Things were going perfectly so far, and as soon as the group finished their breakfast, they bid one another goodbye before going their separate ways. Collei needed to do her actual job as a forest ranger trainee, and so it was the traveler and Paimon's turn to put some of this plan in motion.
They headed out to the nearest withering zone, which happened to be not far from your medical tent, and made sure they would be nearby if anyone got injured.
When a few rangers inevitably did and started heading for your tent, Aether immediately got in their way.
"You can't see Y/n!" Paimon exclaimed dramatically, "They're- uh, completely full! Yep! No more patients for them today; you'd better let him teleport you to see a doctor in Liyue Harbor instead." She pointed to Aether, who quickly nodded in agreement. The rangers exchanged glances among themselves but after a moment, seemed to decide the two were trustworthy because they nodded and allowed the traveler to make use of his teleport waypoints in order to take them for medical attention.
"And here I thought Y/n could never turn away patients," one of the rangers commented, "They must be beyond swamped right now! I hope they're alright."
"We should let Master Tighnari know not to send anyone else their way when we get the chance." Another agreed.
"No!" Paimon exclaimed, surprising them both. She immediately stiffened and pulled herself together, "Paimon means...We'll tell Tighnari for you! So don't worry about it!" Again, after a moment of deliberation, the rangers nodded before disappearing with Aether. The little pixie sighed in relief. If they told Tighnari not to send anyone for your medical attention, he would either suspect something was up and go talk to you about it or get worried about you and also go talk to you about it. They couldn't have that; not until they were ready for you two to meet up later.
"Paimon just hopes Y/n won't be upset we sent their patients to Baizhu," the girl said to herself, knowing the Liyue doctor was something of a rival to you. There was no animosity there; just a bit of friendly banter, but it was enough for you not to want Gandharva Ville's people going to him over you.
When Aether returned from teleporting the injured rangers to the harbor, he held up a thumbs up for the pixie, who nodded in relief that it had worked. They'd likely have to do this many more times today, of course; forest rangers tended to get hurt very often. But at least this meant there were two more they wouldn't need to worry about, which was better than nothing.
After all, if they wanted you two to have time for one another later, they needed to make sure both you and Tighnari had free work schedules for the day.
..........
"Master Tighnari!" Collei called, knowing the fox-eared forest ranger wouldn't be busy at the moment, thanks to her and the others' plan. She found said ranger near his hut, where he appeared to be cooking yet another meal that would make way too many servings for someone living alone to eat. When the green haired girl arrived, he immediately looked up at her.
"Collei, is there something you need?" He asked, clearly feeling a little awkward about being caught doing something so unproductive by his own trainee. What he didn't know was that she'd planned it that way.
"We're out of bandages and Padisarah's." Collei informed her mentor, "And we have a patient with a wound that could really use both over at the medical tent." It wasn't totally true; she had no idea if a patient at your tent required those things. But since both the bandages and the herb were resources they went through the quickest, it was a lie Tighnari would believe and take seriously, which he did.
"I see," he replied, glancing at the food he was still cooking, "Let Y/n know I'll head out to pick some more up today, and not to worry." He knew you too well, and had this been a real situation, Collei knew you would have called him a life-saver like you always did. She smiled, nodding with relief.
"Okay!" She told him and then went to head for the medical tent, only to pause on the way, "Would you like me to come with you to help? I know we usually buy our supplies in bulk so it could be difficult getting everything back here without a sumpter beast." Tighnari paused for a moment, remembering that the last of the sumpter beasts had been taken out that morning for other tasks (something Collei and the others had had nothing to do with but appreciated anyway).
"Yes, I suppose that would be a big help..." He decided finally, "Thank you, Collei. We'll head out in a few minutes, but please go let Y/n know first." She nodded before running off.
Tighnari had specifically given himself extra time not only because you needed to be informed if your daughter left Gandharva Ville but also so he could finish the food he'd been preparing to give you and her for lunch. Once it was finished, he took it from the cooking pot and wrapped it so it would stay fresh until he could give it to you, which would likely be later in the evening than he'd planned.
Collei returned a few minutes later, having actually let you know she'd be leaving but not the real reason why. Then the two of them were on their way after Tighnari checked one more time that he had no other pressing work to get done. Of course, he didn't.
Their walk to Sumeru City was quick and uneventful, and soon enough, they were in the market shopping for bandages, Padisarah's, and another item Tighnari wasn't yet aware of.
"Master Tighnari, look!" Collei exclaimed, pointing to a formal suit that was on display at one of the clothing shops. She'd seemed so excited about it that he had to come over but was surprised now to see what exactly she'd been pointing at.
"A...Suit?"
"Isn't it beautiful?" She asked, aware of how strange she sounded, considering she'd never showed any interest in men's formal wear before. "It reminds me of this story my parent told me once." At this, the forest ranger's fox ears perked a bit.
"Oh?" He asked, silently urging her to continue.
"After their graduation from the Akademiya, they got invited to attend a party in Fontaine," Collei explained, "When they attended, their date wore a purple suit, but it clashed with the outfit they'd picked and made them look awful together." The story she was telling was real, though you hadn't been nearly as dramatic when you'd told it as she currently was. "They broke up after that, but they always say he should have worn green like this suit because it goes with all their clothes."
With that, she turned and walked off as if she'd finally found the Padisarah's they'd been looking for. Planting the seed of an idea in Tighnari's head would hopefully be enough and she needed to be out of the way so he didn't feel any judgement when acting on it.
She made sure to inspect the herbs for much longer than necessary before glancing back at her mentor, who happened to have an extra shopping bag in his arms now that hadn't been there before. The suit that had been on display was also gone now, making the green haired girl's smile widen. She bought the herbs they needed and then turned back to the head forest ranger, who looked at her expectantly.
"Ready to head back to Gandharva Ville?" He asked, "Y/n would never be upset with us for taking too long but I wouldn't put it past them to badmouth me to their patients in order to make them feel better."
"They always say having a common enemy is a big part of bedside manner," Collei giggled, "They need someone to blame for the patient's prolonged pain." Tighnari chuckled at that, shaking his head as he lead the way back towards the village.

Leave it all on the Dance Floor! | Alastor x Overlord! Reader
Platonic! Alastor + Best Friend! Reader who's also an overlord.
Description: After seven years, Alastor pays a visit to the territory of his best friend, an overlord with the power to make people dance.
(Notes: CW Alastor, mentions of cannibalism) If you like this I will make more parts!
"More wine?" A voice beside you asked gently and you turned your head to see your trusted assistant, Joan, standing there with a tray of wine glasses in her hand. Your expression softened at the sight of her but you shook your head.
"No, thanks." You replied with a sigh. You must have been zoning out before because now that she'd gotten your attention, the music playing nearby didn't seem nearly loud enough and you reached over to the speaker on your right to turn up the dial. Joan, a demon that highly resembled a black cat, frowned.
"Not enjoying tonight's party?" She asked with slight disappointment evident in her voice. After all, the two of you had always worked so hard to put on events like this for those living in your Swing Sector. It helped keep their spirits and, therefore, loyalties high despite the fact that their souls were owned by another; or at least, that was the reason you'd always given. In truth, the feline knew there was probably no need to go to such lengths. After all, you were one of the most beloved overlords in the entirety of the pentagram, and most of these sinners had handed their souls over to you willingly.
"I'm just a little tired from the rest of this week." You replied finally before glancing at your demon assistant again with some hope in your eyes. "Any word on my 'special' guests?" Maybe if one of them showed up, you'd find it within yourself to enjoy tonight like Joan wanted you to.
Your hope died a second later, though, when she shook her head. "Zestial and Carmine both politely declined but sent their regards," she explained, "Our other guest gave no response, and it seems Rosie will not be able to attend this evening."
Damnit. There went that plan. You always invited your overlord friends to attend these parties, and usually, three out of four of their answers were always the same. Zestial and Carmilla didn't consider dancing to be their scene, and he hadn't been seen in years, so despite sending word of every gathering, you'd stopped expecting to hear anything back.
But Rosie usually did her best to attend whenever you invited her. She always said how she just loved the chance to spend time with you and you both had gotten more than accustomed to dancing together. She was rather talented at it too, and you'd lost count of how many times you'd won dance contests at these events. She wouldn't have missed one of these if it wasn't totally necessary, so you suspected something important must have come up.
"Susan again?" You asked Joan with a sigh, earning a solemn nod from the catlike demon.
"I'm sure her actions had something to do with Rosie's absence tonight, yes." She told you as politely as possible, not wanting to insult any of your friend's people in front of you, even when she knew how much you hated that one in particular.
"If I see Susan again I'll have to make her regret keeping my friend away from another of our parties," you decided as you took a glass of wine from Joan's tray now, "This is the third month in a row." Joan nodded before slipping away to continue serving wine to the other party attendees and you sighed as you continued sipping wine from your place above the dance floor.
Out in front of you, nearly everyone from the Swing Sector was enjoying their evening. From drinking to dancing to chatting, it was all just how you liked it; the only problem was that in recent years, you'd begun to lose some of your enthusiasm when it came to parties like these.
You knew it had started back when your best friend went away years ago, as ever since, you'd only been losing more and more enjoyment when it came to your daily activities. The worst part was that you didn't even know when- or if- he would be coming back.
Still, as you finished off your glass of wine, you knew you needed to at least try to keep up appearances, despite what you were feeling on the inside. And that, of course, meant going around and mingling with your guests. You set the now-empty glass on a table near where you'd been sitting and then headed off towards the dance floor now, where crowds of people were gathered around.
A small sense of pride filled you at the sight of what they were wearing. Even without having been told to do so, everyone had come donning something originally made by you; the greatest designer in hell (though certain overlords would disagree with that title). Whether the clothes were from your lines years ago or the one that had just come out last month, they all wore outfits personally created by their own stylish overlord.
So at least, if nothing else, you had a well dressed group of people at your disposal.
"There they are!" People exclaimed now that you were up and mingling around, and the crowd quickly parted to allow you to pass them by. There were gasps and aww's as people called your name or waved in your direction. You just smiled back and tried to sport the high amount of power you possessed in the way you moved.
Truthfully, you had been doing the whole overlord thing for a while. You died back in the 1940's when swing dancing had been highly popular, and upon arriving in hell, had quickly swept the pentagram with your combined strength and charisma.
You supposed that was why it had now become your trademark, in addition to fashion. Of all the different types of dance that were out there, swing had always been your favorite, and you were extremely talented at it. As a result, everyone who came under your control would be as well.
"Lovely to see you," you grinned at various party guests, "Glad you could be here!" The first time you'd hosted one of these, you'd required the attendance of everyone in the Poise Sector. By now there was no such thing, and yet the entire sector always turned out for them.
You chatted lightly with some of the people you recognized best and introduced yourself once again to those you didn't; knowing there would be a few new souls at your disposal by the end of the night.
As you turned to the dance floor, though, the sight of it slightly disappointed you. There were people out there, of course; there always were when it came to your sector. But there were so few of them that the space held none of that fun, beautiful energy you'd come to love so much. As much as you didn't feel like dancing tonight, you knew something had to be done about this, and so you headed up to the slightly-raised stage at the end of the dance floor with a sigh.
"Excuse me!" You called to get everyone's attention once you were standing atop it. Instantly, the chatter died down and they all snapped their gazes in your direction. With a grin you placed your hands on your hips like a disappointed mother. "I thought I was clear this was a dancing kind of party!" You exclaimed, "So I'd better see some more bodies on that dance floor; dead or alive!"
Immediately, the space began to fill up as couples made their way onto the dance floor. You smiled at the sight and then stepped down from the stage. That was more like it.
You hated to see a dance floor without lively people on it, which was how you'd found out about your powers in hell in the first place. Upon getting to your first party and seeing no one else dancing, you'd immediately turned up the music and started doing so yourself, only to find that everyone else who heard it seemed to be swept up into your movements as well a moment later. And when you stopped, they'd done the same, as if somehow attached to you and your will. It hadn't taken long for you to realize you were the one making them sway and bop to the music, and of course, you'd been enjoying that ability ever since.
You'd even met your best friend that way; accidentally running into him at one of your nightly outings. At first, he'd been offended by your attempts at forcing him to dance alongside you, but after realizing how much appreciation you had for good music and dance society, the two of you had hit it off pretty quick. Plus, it hadn't hurt that you'd both been from similar time periods.
"Care to dance?" A voice spoke behind you now and you turned to see Joan standing there with her hand extended towards you. Once you recovered from the surprise, your smile widened even more.
"I'd be delighted, darling." You replied as you took her hand and let her lead you onto the dance floor. Things had gotten much livelier now; just the way you liked it.
You weren't even using your powers at the moment; after all, you generally didn't have to in order to get the people of the Swing Sector to do what you wanted. They knew what would happen if they disobeyed, and they respected you too much to do so in the first place.
Joan and your presence only brought the energy up higher; if that was possible. The sight of you dancing near them made people step up their game and if you continued letting things escalate, you knew you would soon have an impromptu dance contest on your hands. That was how it usually went at these parties, anyway, and back in the day, you and your old friend had won many of the little contests together.
But you forced yourself to push him out of your thoughts as you danced with Joan now. You couldn't keep dwelling on that loss; no matter how much it may have hurt you for him to disappear so suddenly and without warning.
Joan seemed to understand where your head was because she threw herself into the moves; twirling and dipping you like her life depended on it. Having danced with the cat demon plenty of times before, you easily kept up with her and even threw in a few of your own accent moves.
The two of you probably danced through about five songs together before you finally paused, letting you both catch your breath in the middle of the dance floor. Joan had a huge smile on her face though, and it proved to be contagious as your own widened through your heavy breathing. After a moment you regained your composure, though the feline was still tired from your first few dances.
You were about to suggest she take a break before continuing when you suddenly felt a hand on your shoulder. You raised an eyebrow, knowing none of the people in your sector were brave enough to touch you out of nowhere like that; even if you beloved, you were still an overlord.
Whoever it was must have given Joan a look because her eyes widened and she immediately nodded, stepping away from you and through the dance floor.
Ah, so whoever this was had decided to cut in.
You couldn't help feeling a little irritated at that knowledge. After all, you'd already been having a tough night and now as soon as you and Joan had started enjoying yourselves, it had been interrupted. You even considered telling this person off for it.
That was, until you looked up to see their face. If you'd been breathing heavily before, your breath had all but stopped now in realization.
Yellow teeth curved into a huge smile, red eyes, and a pair of small, all-too-familiar antlers sat atop his head. In that moment, you could have cried.
"...Al?" You breathed, seeing his smile widen.
"Pleasure to see you again my dear! It's been quite a while now, hasn't it?" He replied with a carefree tone. Even his voice, with that damned radio filter, sounded just like you remembered.
"Alastor!" You exclaimed so loudly that you were sure even Rosie over in Cannibal Town could hear you. Not waiting another moment, you pulled him into a hug so tight that it could have crushed a someone's bones, had the person in your embrace not been the Radio Demon himself. "It's you!" You couldn't hold back your joy and his smile widened even further, if that was possible, as he hugged you back.
"In the flesh, darling!" By now, the rest of the Swing Sector had gone back to dancing as if nothing had happened. Of course, they were as shocked as you to see Alastor back after seven years, but they knew better than to voice that surprise in the middle of your reunion. There would no doubt be gossip about the circumstances of his arrival and visit later, though.
"Where have you been?!" You demanded once you pulled away from his embrace. Of course, you knew him well enough to know he likely wouldn't give the answer to you straight; he liked hearing theories and speculations way too much for that.
"Oh you know, here and there!" Alastor replied vaguely before glancing around at the other sinners on the dance floor. He kept a smile on his face but glared at the ones currently looking your way, making them immediately turn back to minding their own business. "Now, care to have this dance with me, my dear?"
"Of course." You replied with a grin as you took the other demon's hand, glancing at the various dancing pairs around you. "In fact, I think you may have returned just in time for a dance contest."
You could already see the competitive sparkle that grew in Alastor's eyes, having won many such competitions with you in the past. As much as you wanted to know where he'd been all this time, you supposed that would have to wait until after the two of you had defended your titles as the reigning swing dancing champions of the Swing Sector.
"Then we'd better show these sinners how it's done!" The Radio Demon exclaimed with all the enthusiasm you'd come to expect from him.
As you two danced, you could feel the party's mood begin to liven up. You couldn't get a smile off your face anymore than your best friend could, it seemed, and it had begun to spread to the souls under your control as they stepped up their own dancing game.
"Now tell me, how have you been since I saw you last?" Alastor asked before twirling you around, "And don't leave out a detail, dear!" You chuckled, knowing there was so much to catch him up on.
"I've managed," you replied sarcastically, "I have more souls under my command than the last time we met and Swing Sector has been coming along nicely. We even finally put in that diner Rosie and I have been talking about for years!"
"Wonderful!" Alastor exclaimed before glaring at a dancing couple that had gotten a little too close to encroaching on your shared space, "How glad I am to hear that worked out for you!"
"Me too," you admitted, "Some of her people staff the place, along with my own. That way, we have a wide variety of menu items. I bet you'd enjoy the food there!" At this, the deer-like demon nearly smirked.
"Oh, I'm sure I would," he told you as the song you'd been dancing to ended and a new one began, "Speaking of Rosie, how has she been these past years?"
"She's a lovely as ever," you said with a smile, "She usually attends over monthly parties but hasn't been able the last couple of times due to...circumstances." At that, Alastor's ears fell back as if he already knew whom it was you were referring to.
"I see..." He replied before regaining his composure and widening his smile again, "Well, I suppose now that I've returned the three of us will have to find a time to catch up again!"
"Definitely!" You replied with a nod, "And then you can explain to the both of us why you've been gone all this time. I tell ya, we were starting to worry you'd gone and died!" You sent him a playful glare, "But of course I know the great Radio Demon couldn't be taken out so easily. Speaking of, have you let Rosie know you're back in town yet?"
There was a brief pause in the conversation as he spun you again before you came back to face him. "Al...?" You questioned sternly. The deer demon, still smiling as brightly as ever, simply shrugged innocently (or as innocently as someone like him could). "Al!" You exclaimed now. You would have given his arm a light smack if you hadn't been in the middle of a dance. "I can't believe you just appeared after seven years and you haven't even thought to tell her you're back in town!"
"I plan to inform her shortly," Alastor replied dismissively, "But make no mistake, darling, I've only returned today, and you're the very first person I came to!" That made your expression soften a bit.
"Really?" You asked, only for him to nod in response.
"Of course!" Before Alastor could go on, the song picked up and you knew it would be drawing to a close soon. He seemed to realize it too because he turned to you and you nodded in confirmation. From there, you both picked up the pace and gave it your all; showing off for all the new-in-town sinners who thought they had even a sliver of a chance at winning this competition.
Leading the steps, Alastor seemed to have disregarded everyone else's places on the dance floor now as you two moved across it. Finally, the song started to come to a close and he timed one final spin perfectly so that he'd dipped you dramatically as it ended.
There, you paused for a brief second before the entire dance floor erupted into applause. Smiling, you stood up straight and brushed yourself off, knowing you and the Radio Demon had once again won this competition.
"Still got it, I see." You smiled towards the deer demon as the two of you took your bows.
"Of course!" Alastor replied cheerfully, letting go of your hand now to adjust his coat. "How could I call myself your friend if I'd let my dancing skills diminish over the years?" You rolled your eyes but a smile was still evident on your face as you pulled him into a hug again.
"I'm really glad you're back, Alastor." You said seriously now, taking note of how all the people around you suddenly seemed to find the ground and sky much more interesting than your display. Good; they knew better than to be nosey about their overlord's dealings and relationships.
"As am I." Alastor replied before finally pulling back to look you in the eyes, "I must say, I've missed you a great deal all this time!" You chuckled now before turning to see Joan signaling to you that it was getting late and that she would be in your boutique nearby if you needed anything. With how much time you always spent in the place, it had become your home by now, and the whole second floor had been converted to a living area. Joan, being your closest supporter, always made sure you were comfortable and had everything you needed before leaving you for the night.
"Come on," you told Alastor now, nodding towards the boutique. "We can have tea, and then maybe I'll consider designing you some new clothes. It's been seven years after all; don't you think it's time for a little update?"
"I trust your judgement," Alastor replied as his smile widened. You headed for the boutique and he followed after you, taking in the sense of familiarity the place brought him.
He'd been worried about your reaction to his sudden return, but as expected, you'd taken it as well as ever. Alastor knew he was more than lucky to have a best friend as understanding as yourself, even if he wasn't going to be getting out of telling you the truth eventually. But until then, he was glad just to be able to spend time with you and catch up.
It really was good to be back.

How I Met Her Mother | Tighnari x Reader
Romantic: Tighnari x Collei's Parent! Reader
(Notes: none) (gender neutral reader) (reader is Collei's adoptive parent)
Description:
When Paimon and the traveler discover Tighnari's ties with Collei's adoptive parent, he begins to reminisce about their past together.
Tighnari watched from outside his hut as you walked with Collei on the path below, smiling and chatting comfortably in the afternoon light. He took note of how your eyes seemed to sparkle, and how genuinely relaxed you seemed.
The sight, which was becoming more and more rare by the day, made his lips curve up into a soft smile. For as long as he'd known you, he'd found that seeing you happy happened to be his favorite thing, and now was no exception to that.
He recalled the letters you'd sent to him in Gandharva Ville just a few months prior, wincing at how anxious and worried you had seemed back them. Of course, there were plenty of reasons to feel that way in Sumeru these days, but something about seeing you that way had always gotten to him in ways that other people's fears never had. He didn't want you to have to worry, even if the feeling was very much warranted.
That was why he had ultimately suggested you move to Gandharva Ville, hoping it would at least ease your worries a little. Luckily, it seemed to be helping so far. If nothing else, it meant you could be closer to Collei all the time, which made you feel a lot better.
"Tighnari, hello?" A high pitched voice startled him out of his wandering thoughts, and he turned to see Paimon floating out of his hut with the traveler following behind her.
"What is it, Paimon?" He sighed, crossing his arms and glancing back towards where you and Collei had stopped walking to take a seat on a couple of rocks next to the river below.
"Paimon was just going to tell you we're ready to head out, but you seem distracted." The pixie replied, floating closer and following his gaze to where you and the green haired girl were sitting. "Who is that?" She pointed at you, and Tighnari quickly looked away, both to hide the hint of pink in his face and to prevent himself from continuing to stare. Once he felt he'd recovered, he turned back to the pair calmly and pushed himself to stand up from the wall he'd been leaning against.
"Oh, they're Collei's adoptive parent," he explained, "They recently moved to Gandharva Ville to be closer to her and help with her Eleazar."
"Her adoptive parent?" Paimon repeated, "But they don't look any older than you!" He chuckled at this, knowing you got that a lot. You always had the best responses when people commented on how young you looked for someone who was the parent of a teenager. Usually it was something like 'yeah, I moisturize' or 'then it seems my sacrifices for eternal youth have been working.' Unfortunately, Tighnari wasn't quite as creative as you.
"They aren't," He replied simply, "But when Cyno brought her back from Mondstat after she was freed from Dottore, Y/n was the one that stepped up to help her, despite being fairly young themselves. They've been caring for her ever since."
"They seem very kind," Aether smiled, "I hope we get to meet them soon."
"I'm sure you will," Tighnari replied simply, "But we should get going now. Those withering zones aren't going to destroy themselves." With that, he headed down the wooden bridge and began leading the way towards their target area, happy to have been able to change the subject.
Although he didn't mind talking about you and especially the kind things you'd done for Collei and everyone else in Gandharva Ville, it was also a blatant reminder that he still had yet to tell you the truth about his feelings, something he preferred to avoid thinking about.
Unfortunately, it seemed Paimon's curiosity about the topic of you still had yet to be satiated as the three of them made their way to the first withering zone.
"You seem to know Collei's parent pretty well Tighnari!" She chirped, completely ignorant to his embarrassment when it came to talking about you, "How did you two meet, anyway?"
"How did we meet?" He repeated, a warm feeling enveloping him as the old memories surfaced. "It's a long story, but I suppose I could tell it. We have time now, after all." With that, he took in a breath before starting at the beginning.
..........
You and Tighnari had both been students of the Amurta Darshan of the Akademiya. You had one or two classes together, but ended up interacting very little since his studies focused more on plants and nature while yours revolved around medicine.
But that all changed one day when he had been injured while doing some field research for a project. He was brought into the infirmary and you, who had been participating in a work-study under the nurse there, were the one to treat him.
Though Tighnari couldn't remember the details of his visit very well anymore, he still vividly recalled how kind you had been to him. Even though he had very obviously been injured due to his own stubbornness and refusal to wait to finish the assignment, you had been very patient while helping him heal. When he looked at you, there had been no judgement in your eyes, only a strong desire to help.
"I'm Y/n." You'd introduced yourself upon entering the room, "I don't care how you ended dup here; what matters is that you get better now. I'm still an apprentice, but I'll do my best to help you."
Since the Akademiya's environment tended to be so hostile, that was the kindest anyone had been to him since his arrival, and it really stuck out to him.
Even after he was able to leave the infirmary, the two of you had decided to keep in touch. Since you were part of the same Darshan, it wasn't difficult, either. You often studied together, ran into one another in the halls, or attended the same school events. The more time you two spent together, the more you found yourselves getting along, and the more time he wanted to spend with you.
He could vividly remember graduating with you and Cyno, and how bittersweet that day had been.
Yes, it was everything you'd worked for over the last years spent at the Akademiya. But it also meant you'd all be going your separate ways, and that he might not get to see you again for a while.
Even though you promised to keep in touch, he knew your visits would be infrequent now that you were moving to the desert to practice medicine there.
And for a while, he was right.
..........
When Cyno showed up in Gandharva Ville with Collei, it had been during one of the rare occasions where you were visiting.
At first, Tighnari had been a little irritated at the interruption. That was, until you both saw the little girl that the matra had brought with him. He'd never seen a child look so scarred and fearful before, and it must have touched your heart as much as it did his, because then you were pulling Cyno aside and demanding to know what had happened.
He hadn't planned on bringing you into the situation originally, taking Collei to Gandharva Ville to ask Tighnari if he'd be willing to look after her instead. But as soon as you heard everything the girl had gone through, you insisted on being the one to look after her.
Tighnari had always admired how caring you were, and your insistence on being the one to help Collei had only further proved to him how wonderful of a person you were.
You ended up extending your stay in Gandharva Ville after that, which he was so far from being opposed to that it was almost laughable.
As he'd expected, you and Collei bonded a great deal during that time, and within just a few weeks, she seemed to be doing a lot better. She went up and tugged on Cyno's cloak one day, catching his attention when he'd been reading a book.
"What is it, Collei?" He asked softly, bending down to the girl's level.
"C-can I stay with Y/n?" She asked, pointing to where you stood in the distance, bandaging up a wounded forest ranger. Cyno's face softened.
"Of course, I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you help them out for the day."
"No," Collei shook her head, trying to find the words to explain her feelings, "I want to stay with them all the time." Now the white haired man understood what she was implying, and he raised an eyebrow.
"You mean you want Y/n to adopt you?" He asked, to which she nodded eagerly. He smiled, standing back up and motioning for her to follow him. "I'm sure they'd be happy to take you in. Come on, let's go ask them."
And the rest was history. You, of course, gladly adopted Collei. For a while, you lived in Gandharva Ville with her because it seemed to be the place that made her the happiest. You even fought with your employer to let you commute to work in Sumeru City if it meant you could raise her there, and they eventually gave in.
Those were the years Tighnari remembered being the happiest; when you were nearby and happy yourself.
Somewhere down the line, he ended up becoming Collei's mentor. She had a love for the forest and the people around her, as well as a thirst for knowledge that he was happy to nurture.
As she got older, you started to feel like you might be stifling her, and eventually moved to Sumeru City in an attempt to both make your own life easier and give her the space she needed to continue growing. You constantly wrote to and visited both her and Tighnari though, and were always checking in as well.
..........
It was only when Collei's Eleazar got worse that you finally moved back to Gandharva Ville to support her, and times had been tough ever since.
Tighnari could tell the stress was taking a huge toll on you, even if you tried not to let her see that. Plus, going back and forth to Sumeru City for work every day to do an already taxing job wasn't easy.
As much as he had wanted to confess all his feelings to you the second you moved back to Gandharva Ville, it wasn't the right time. So instead, he'd kept it inside. He didn't want to stress you out any further; he couldn't do that to you. If it meant saving you even just a little bit of worry, he was willing to keep his feelings inside for as long as it might take.
Now, he returned to his hut in Gandharva Ville, glancing over to Collei's to see you exiting with a smile on your face, presumably having just said goodnight to her. As soon as you turned away though, it fell into a frown as you started the walk back to your own hut.
You spotted Tighnari on the way though, smiling again as you waved at him. He waved back, a melancholy feeling taking over him. Finally, he turned to go back into his own hut.
'I wish I could take all your worries away.'

Writer's Block | Thoma x Reader
Romantic: Thoma x Author! Reader
(Notes: none) (gender neutral reader)
Description: When you're late turning your new draft in to Yae Miko, Thoma helps you hide from the kitsune's wrath.
It was late in the evening, almost night. The stars could be seen twinkling overhead, despite it still technically being twilight. Though darkness was coming, there was still just enough visibility that a few people went about their business in the streets of the city. Shopkeepers were just beginning to close up for the day, and families that were still out began making their way home. Crickets could even be heard somewhere in the grassy patches. The entire scene was very peaceful.
Well, until a certain h/c haired individual came thundering down the path, disrupting the calmness of the night. You were in quite a rush, and several people narrowly managed to duck out of the way before you ran right into them.
"Late again, Y/n?" A restaurant owner called as you passed him by. You nodded, a sheepish smile crossing your face.
"I may have forgotten my new draft was due today..." You replied before glancing back to see the very figure you dreaded most in the world was starting to catch up with you. "Gotta go!" You shouted, picking up the pace and throwing yourself down the nearby flight of stone stairs and plotting the best escape route in your head.
You easily ruled out some of the more obvious ones like gliding off the nearby cliffs or trying to escape into the field that eventually lead to Chinju Forst, mainly because they'd already failed you before.
Though startling to some passersby, the circumstances you now found yourself in weren't exactly an uncommon occurrence, especially now that you were a permanent resident of Inazuma. You'd never thought moving away to work on your career as an author could be so eventful.
Now, reaching the bottom of the stairs, you could hear her close behind you, and you didn't even dare to look back and confirm her proximity. Instead, you kept running, weaving between buildings in the hopes of losing her. Unfortunately, it did little other than slow her down a little, which wouldn't be enough to help you escape your quickly approaching fate.
Knowing you wouldn't be able to make it out of the city before she caught up, you opted for the less risky, but much more terrifying choice; hiding and hoping for the best.
As soon as you reached the outskirts of the city where the big Sakura tree was planted, you wrapped your arms around it and scurried up as quickly as you could, ignoring the small splinters you could feel entering your skin. After all, if you managed to escape, it would all be worth the pain.
Finally, you reached what you deemed to be a safe enough height that you wouldn't be easily spotted from the ground. Arms beginning to grow tired, you reached out and swung yourself onto a nearby tree branch, arms latching around it as the rest of your body lay atop it. You didn't dare to sit up yet. This way, in the approaching darkness, you might look like you were one with the branch, or at least, that was what you hoped.
Though, who were you kidding? Someone like Yae Miko, who had literal fox ears and kitsune powers, could probably see in the dark too. You were most likely going to be a lost cause this time, too.
You sighed, craning your neck to see if she'd caught up by now. Even though it felt like hours had passed, realistically, it had probably only been about thirty seconds.
"...Ahem." The sound of someone clearing their throat snapped you out of your thoughts and your gaze immediately darted over to the branch on the other side of the tree, where a familiar man sat with a cat in his lap. Seeing him, your heartrate slowed slightly knowing he wouldn't give you away.
"Thoma?" You whispered, "I didn't see you there." Though you were quickly losing light, you could just make out the little smile that covered his face.
"I could tell." He chuckled quietly. You rolled your eyes, but truth be told, you were smiling too.
"Well, at least that means this is a good hiding place." You breathed as the familiar head of pink hair finally appeared from behind one of the buildings nearby.
"Trying to avoid Yae Miko again?" Thoma asked. You just nodded, afraid if you spoke, her fox ears would pick up on it and she'd find you. He seemed to understand your position, because he continued just as quietly, "don't worry. I won't blow your cover."
You sent him a thankful gaze before freezing in place. She was standing right under the tree now, but she hadn't seemed to notice you yet. Her eyes squinted, as if trying to pick you out, but then she noticed Thoma first and a smirk appeared on her lips.
"Ah, Thoma," She called, moving over to the side of the tree his branch was on, "I'm once again searching for my dear employee, Y/n. Have you seen them anywhere? It's getting dark and I do worry about them, you know." You rolled your eyes at her attempt to appeal to Thoma's better nature.
Had he not seen you just now, he might have agreed, or even helped look for you. Luckily, he wasn't falling for it now.
"No, I haven't seen them at all today, sorry!" He replied nonchalantly, gently getting down from his branch and making sure not to let the little cat fall in the process. "But I'm sure they'll be alright. If they aren't here, then they probably wandered back into the city or to their house. They's been living in Inazuma for a few months now, so you don't have to worry that they'll get lost."
You smiled at his words. Not only was he not blowing your cover like promised, but he was even helping to cover for you. You'd have to find some way to repay him later for this.
"I suppose you're right." Yae Miko replied, visibly frowning at his response, "Well, thank you for trying to help anyway. I'll keep looking for Y/n. I'm sure you need to be getting back to the Kamisato Estate before it's too dark."
"R-right!" The blonde replied, gently setting the cat down with a smile, "It was good to see you, Lady Yae. And again, don't worry too much about them!" She smiled back, though to you, it was clearly fake. Still, she kept it plastered on until Thoma had walked far enough away that she could no longer see him.
Turning back to the city, the kitsune let out a sigh, placing her hands on her hips.
"You can run but you can't hide, Y/n," She said softly, "That boy is too kindhearted for his own good, but I suppose he did have a point. I'll check their house since they can't have gone very far..." With that, she went off in the direction of your home, just inside Inazuma City.
You stayed put for a few more minutes until you were sure she was gone. Then you gently lowered yourself to the ground and checked to make sure no one else had seen you.
"It's alright, she's gone now." A voice spoke from behind you, making you jump and whirl around to see Thoma standing there once again. He smiled sheepishly. "Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you. I just wanted to check whether you'd gotten away yet."
"I was going to book it back home, but she's checking my house now," You admitted with a sigh, "I'm not sure where I'm going to sleep tonight, but I guess that's what I get for having writer's block again." Thoma chuckled, having witnessed you and the kitsune's cat and mouse game several times before, he knew what you meant.
"Well, you're welcome to stay at the Komore Teahouse, if you want," He suggested, "I don't think she'll look for you there, especially after seeing me just now."
"You did give quite a convincing performance," You smiled, wondering whether he'd always been that good at lying. "But are you sure that would be okay? I can find somewhere else to sleep; I'm sure Yoimiya would take me in again...Maybe." Actually, after the last time, when Yae Miko had searched her entire house and everything in it to find you, just for you to have been hiding under the bed the entire time, you weren't so sure she'd be willing to help you.
"Don't worry, you hiding out at the teahouse for one night isn't going to hurt anything," Thoma replied, "Come on, I insist. I can't just go home for the night knowing you might not have somewhere safe to stay. And plus, I would feel bad if she found you. It sounded like she was really upset this time." Finally, you gave in.
"Alright, then let's get going before she comes back." You started leading the way before quickly stopping and turning back, "And thanks for all your help, Thoma." He just smiled back.
"It's no problem!" And with that, the two of you headed off to the teahouse, careful to avoid areas with light so you wouldn't be seen by your boss or create potential witnesses.
"So how overdue are you with this one? I don't think I've ever seen Lady Yae so determined to find you." Thoma commented quietly as the two of you walked.
"Actually, I was only supposed to have this draft in by the end of the work day, which was just a couple of hours ago." You defended. He raised an eyebrow. "Though, technically, today's due date may have come after three or four extensions already..."
"There it is," he replied with a chuckle, "But then again, I can't say that I blame you. It must be hard coming up with new ideas all the time, and every author gets writer's block occasionally."
"'Yet none quite as often as the infamous Y/n L/n,'" You quoted, "That's what Miss Yae always says. I'm probably the most troublesome writer they have at the publishing house. Sometimes I feel kind of bad about it."
"Maybe, but you're also the best writer they have!" Thoma quickly countered, "I've read your books, and there's a reason they sell so many copies each time. Plus, they didn't move you all the way here from Sumeru for nothing! That's something to be proud of."
"Thanks, Thoma." You smiled. Finally, the two of you arrived at Komore Teahouse and quickly entered in the hopes that no one had seen you.
"Woof!" A quiet bark greeted you both as you walked through the door, and your eyes brightened as you saw Taroumaru sitting on the counter like always.
"Hey buddy," You scratched his head, smiling as he wagged his little tail. Though you didn't get to come to the teahouse often, his presence always seemed to make your day better, even when you were taking refuge from your very angry boss.
"Y/n's going to stay here for the night, okay Taroumaru?" Thoma informed the dog, who let out a quiet bark in approval. You smiled before following the blonde man to one of the tearooms, where he prompted you to set your small backpack down and began setting up a few cushions as a makeshift bed.
"Sorry there isn't anything more comfortable to sleep on," he sighed, glancing around the room again for anything that might make a nice blanket. "When I stayed here during the vision hunt decree, Miss Kamisato brought me a mattress, blankets, pillows, and whatever else I needed, but I guess those have all been moved back to the Kamisato Estate."
"That's okay," You shook your head, "I really appreciate you letting me stay here, as it is. You could have just told me to suck it up and face the consequences of my own actions." Thoma laughed.
"I would never," he replied, "Especially when those consequences are Lady Yae herself. She can be pretty intimidating when she wants to."
"You got that right," You sighed, stretching your already-sore muscles. Now that you had the chance to slow down and be calm, you realized just how exhausted your body felt, and the idea of sleep became more and more tempting. "But seriously, thank you. If not for you, I'd be locked up in the publishing house and finishing the last two hundred and ninety or so pages of my book in one sitting."
You took a seat amidst the cushions Thoma had set out, relishing in their softness. Either the two of you had very different definitions of comfortable, or you were just tired enough that anything felt comfortable.
"Two hundred and ninety? Wasn't that book supposed to be three hundred pages? Y/n, you've barely started!" He replied in surprise.
"...Inspiration didn't strike!" You shrugged, feeling your cheeks get slightly red from embarrassment, "And plus, I was still feeling burnt out from writing the one before it!"
Technically, both of those things were true. You always had a such a hard time working around the many mental blocks that came with writing, and Yae Miko's pushing you to write so many books one after another didn't help with the burnout you'd been feeling creeping up for months either.
"You also like to procrastinate," Thoma added with a smirk, only making your face more red.
"Maybe that too," you admitted with a yawn, "But either way, I'll get it done soon. I just needed a little more time."
"I believe in you," Thoma replied as you nuzzled into the cushions, "You didn't build a career on this for nothing, after all. I have full confidence you'll finish this book soon, and that it'll be your best one yet. In fact, I look forward to reading it myself!" He glanced back at you, noticing that your eyes were now closed as you lay in the little makeshift bed.
"Uh huh." You uttered, now half asleep. He hadn't realized just how tired you'd been. A smile crept onto his face as he got up to leave. It was getting late, and plus, he didn't want to disturb your rest. Glancing back one last time, he was sure you were asleep now.
"I really admire you, Y/n." He whispered just before closing the tearoom's door, "I hope you know that."

Viatrix | Genshin Impact Fan Ending
This is just an ending I wrote for Genshin Impact. It definitely will not be accurate when more updates come out.
Oneshot: No Paring
(Notes: mentions of death, injury) (Lumine is the main traveler) (spoilers for Sumeru Archon Quest)
Description:
Lumine has finally reached the end of her journey, having visited all seven nations, but still has yet to find her brother. Desperate and unsure of what else to do, she takes a trip to Khaenri'ah, but will discover some very surprising things about herself and her past while there.
Three, that was how many stars Lumine could see in the sky tonight. There were so few now that she could count them on one hand, and it made her uneasy.
Since arriving in Teyvat, she had always looked to the sky for comfort, ran her eyes across the many constellations and picked out the shapes of the clouds to calm herself down. Without Aether by her side, it was the only way she could keep grounded; keep from missing him too much.
It made sense, she supposed, given that she and her twin had been made from stardust in the first place; two beings created from the cosmos, who wanted to explore every inch of it and its many worlds, as well as the lives in them. She just missed the days when they would journey together, rather than having to do so on her own.
"Sweet Madame!...You shouldn't...Have..." Paimon's sleep talking interrupted her thoughts, as if reminding her that, despite losing her twin, she wasn't completely alone on this journey.
Finally tearing her eyes away from the window, Lumine turned her attention to her companion's sleeping figure, sprawled on the big bed as she quietly snored. A smile made its way across the traveler's face, and she tiptoed over to join the little pixie and get some rest of her own.
Despite the size of the bed, Paimon somehow managed to take up most of the space, leaving just the edge of it for Lumine. Sighing, the blonde tucked the blankets a little tighter around her friend in an effort to keep her warm. They were still in Snezhnaya, spending their last night in a small inn at the outskirts of the nation. Their next, and hopefully final stop would be Khaenri'ah.
Lumine stared up at the ceiling, feeling butterflies at the thought of finally arriving there. After all this time, all this traveling, she could hardly believe they had actually made it this far.
What would greet her in the forgotten nation? Would Aether be there? Could they finally reunite and put this chapter of their lives behind them?
It all felt so bittersweet, now that she thought about it. In searching for her brother, she'd met so many people and done so many things. She'd risked her life to save entire nations, and all to be told the same thing every time: no one had any information about her twin, or at least, none that they could give her. She was so tired, and yet the journey couldn't quite come to an end. It wouldn't be over until she found Aether and worked things out with him.
As she began to doze off, drifting closer and closer into sleep, she thought about the first time they'd seen each other again in this world, glancing back at the window.
"We have always had enough time." That was what he had told her. At the time, she had agreed, despite how much it hurt that he was leaving her behind again.
But now, as she observed the night sky, devoid of almost all life, save for the three lone stars that remained, she wasn't so sure it was true.
..........
Lumine followed as Paimon led her through the streets of Khaenri'ah, or at least, what was left of it. She didn't say a word, instead listening to her companion's rambles as they slowly made their way through the wasteland that had once housed so many people.
She didn't know what she had been expecting, having been told the story of how the gods destroyed the place so long ago. But even still, it pained her to see it in this state. What could the people have possibly done to warrant this happening to their home?
At some point, she wandered away from Paimon without realizing it. She didn't know where she was going; it was like something about the place had completely entranced her. Her body moved on its own as she made her way to the center of the ruins, finding what looked like it had been some sort of palace at one point.
Finally, she stopped, taking in the sight of the devastated city. As she overlooked it, it was like she could still feel the way it had been in its prime. She could practically see the buildings, brand new and glittering with hope. The idea only made it more painful to look at in its present state, and she found herself collapsing to her knees.
But why did she care so much? Why did she feel so connected to this place, to the point where she'd been able to feel the tears rolling down her cheeks since she set foot in the ruins?
"I see you've finished your journey." A soft voice spoke behind her. Despite being startled, she couldn't find it within herself to turn around. After all, she knew who it was. She wouldn't forget the sound of his voice for as long as she lived.
"Aether..." She whispered. She could hear his footsteps as he came closer, then fought the urge to jump when she felt his hand on her shoulder.
"Lumine..."He replied, "Do you understand now?" She didn't reply, instead closing her eyes as more tears fell down her face. "Do you understand my mission now?" He added, but again, she didn't reply.
Truthfully, she still didn't understand. She couldn't figure out why this meant so much to her, why it was so painful to see this foreign place destroyed.
It felt like a dream she was trying to recall; she couldn't make out the important details, despite seeing the results right in front of her. Why couldn't she remember?
Aether knelt down next to her, and she finally met his amber eyes, which reflected her own tearful ones right back at her.
"It's okay if you still don't remember," He assured her gently, "just being here probably isn't enough. But you will."
Somehow, his presence helped. Despite everything they'd been through and how many times they'd lost each other, it was like everything went back to how it used to be now that they were together again. Maybe that was what it meant to be twins.
The two stayed there for a while, neither feeling the need, nor the will to move. Eventually, Lumine stopped crying, wiping the stains off her cheeks as she looked back to her brother.
"What...Happened?" She finally managed, her voice breaking halfway through. It was a stupid question, especially since she'd already been told the story of Khaenri'ah several times, and yet she felt like she needed to ask, needed to know everything about the space that was now lost to them.
His face softened, and he gently helped her to her feet before answering.
"Where do I start?" He asked himself, a bittersweet smile on his lips. Before he could continue, another voice spoke up from behind the two travelers.
"How about over here?" The twins snapped their gazes to where the voice had come from, feeling their heartbeats quicken when they saw her.
The very god that had split them up in the first place; the Heavenly Principles herself stood right in front of them, her face expressionless.
"Y-you..." Lumine spoke, making the god's lips curve upward slightly.
"Indeed," she replied, "You two must be Aether and...Lumine, am I correct?" She floated slightly closer to them and both siblings instinctively drew their swords, prepared to fight her all over again.
It was then that Lumine wondered where Paimon had gone, taking a quick glance around but not seeing her anywhere nearby. The god only smirked, putting out her hand, upon which, a small black and red cube materialized.
"Well done, my child," the god spoke, still eyeing Lumine. She didn't spare a second glance at Aether, as if he wasn't even there. "You have done well to prepare her for me." With that, the square in her hand disappeared, replaced by the familiar figure of the small pixie, who seemed completely disoriented to have ended up there.
"H-huh?!" Paimon exclaimed, turning around to meet the eyes of the god and then jumping back in fear. "Agh! What's she doing here?! Is this the god you were looking for, Lumine?" The pixie floated over to the blonde traveler, taking notice of the familiar twin standing next to her.
"Yes." Lumine replied, pushing Paimon behind her and readying her sword for battle.
"How cute," the god mused, "I never would have expected the two of you to become so close."
"What are you talking about?!" Lumine finally shouted, frustrated at being so out of the loop. Just what was going on? Aether, on the other hand, didn't seem very surprised about the situation at all. The Heavenly Principles took notice of this, her smirk only growing.
"He knows," she nodded in the boy's direction, making Aether freeze up as everyone turned to him.
"Aether?" Lumine questioned carefully.
"What, you didn't think to tell her?" The goddess continued, seeming to become more amused with every new development, "What a cruel thing to do to one's own twin..."
"Shut up!" Aether exclaimed, finally having enough of her taunts, "You know nothing about us." This seemed to catch her by surprise.
"Is that so?" She questioned, "Then I suppose you wouldn't mind if the two of us have a little chat." With that, she extended her hand the way she'd done when the twins first arrived in Teyvat, and black and red blocks started appearing around Lumine's body before she could even react.
Panicked, Paimon gripped onto her shoulder in an effort for them not to be separated. It was like things happened in reverse, as Aether reached for his twin, trying desperately to stop her from being taken from him. This time, all Lumine could do was watch as the cubes covered her and Paimon, and in an instant, they and the Heavenly Principles had disappeared.
Crying out, Aether collapsed to his knees, tears blurring his vision. He berated himself for not being faster, not being stronger, not saving his sister, but he knew it wasn't going to do anything now. He had to get to Celestia before he lost her for good this time.
..........
When Lumine opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was a bright white light overwhelming her vision. Paimon was still with her; she could feel her tiny hands latched around her arm. Her body felt light, almost weightless. It was as if she were floating, despite feeling the ground beneath her feet.
When her eyes adjusted to the light, she found herself back in Khaenri'ah, but not the way she had seen it just now.
This Khaenri'ah wasn't destroyed; in fact, it looked brand new. She stood on a glittering white staircase, overlooking the entire city, which reached out so far, she couldn't even see the end of it from where she stood.
Glancing down at the streets, she could see people everywhere, all living their lives just like the people of any other nation would. At the top of the staircase sat the entrance to a beautiful blue palace, just like how she'd imagined it earlier while viewing the ruins.
"Is this...The past Khaenri'ah?" Paimon asked in a whisper, still linked to the traveler's arm. Lumine only nodded, still at a loss for words.
"Here they come!" A child's voice called, and she turned her attention to the top of the stairs, where a group of people gathered at the palace's entrance. Compared to the people in the streets below, they were dressed much more formally, and carried themselves in a more graceful manner.
Lumine studied the people as they looked up to the sky above the staircase, trying to understand what they were doing. The drown hairs man with deep blue eyes was so familiar, and after a moment she realized he was a younger Clothar Alberich. That had to mean this was Khaenri'ah's royal family.
Turning to see what they were gazing at, she put a hand up to block her eyes from the sun. Two figures appeared in her vision, winged beings that became clearer the closer they got to her.
They seemed to be walking on air, and both wore beautiful white and gold clothes. Finally, they landed on the staircase just below her, and she got a good look at the pair.
To her surprise, the boy was more familiar than she'd expected. With his amber eyes and golden blonde braid, there was no mistaking it. That was Aether, and standing next to him was someone she'd expected to see even less: herself.
"L-lumine, is that...You and your brother?" Paimon whispered, and the girl only nodded.
They looked almost the same as she and Aether did today, despite this scene definitely not taking place in present time. They didn't seem to notice Lumine herself, walking past her and up the stairs to meet with the family. Their swords were still drawn, but not in a threatening way.
"There they are," An older man spoke as the twins approached, "The guardians of Khaenri'ah." Lumine watched herself wave a hand dismissively.
"Please, just call us the twins," Aether spoke, "We're no different than anyone else."
"Maybe so," the man replied, "But I've never met any other people that could do what the two of you do, and that has to count for something." The twins smiled, following as the family led them inside the palace.
Before Lumine could follow, the scene around her changed, and Paimon clung tighter to her arm. The sight they were met with next was far more tragic, as they found themselves in the midst of a battlefield.
There was so much blood that Lumine couldn't even see the ground properly, and Paimon buried her face in the girl's chest to avoid the sight. Lumine just hugged her tightly, trying to understand the scene even if her heart begged her to look away.
Despite the fighting all around them, she was able to pick out the familiar face of the geo archon, as well as a few other past Liyue gods she'd seen drawings of before.
This must be the Archon war, but why were they seeing it now?
Again, her body moved on its own as she walked the battlefield, untouched by the fighting or blood. It was as if she were a ghost. Glancing up to the sky, she could see Celestia in the distance, flying over what looked to be Khaenri'ah. Slowly, she began to make her way there.
Upon arriving, she found the nation in no better shape than the rest of Teyvat, as it seemed the war had even reached there.
She was making her way up the stairs to the palace when she heard the same old man's voice again. He had to be part of the royal family.
"Please, leave us!" He begged, "Khaenri'ah cannot afford to lose the two of you, not when you are the only ones keeping the gods from overtaking us." Finally, Lumine reached the top, witnessing the scene of the old man conversing with herself and Aether.
"That's exactly why we're not leaving," She heard herself say.
"We will fight for Khaenri'ah no matter what. This is our home." Aether added. And with that, the twins took off to join in the war.
Lumine followed them as they ran through the sky, and Paimon finally raised her little head.
"Did he say you two protected Khaenri'ah?" She questioned quietly, "Paimon thought you'd never been to this world before."
"Me too," Lumine whispered back, finally reaching the twins on the battlefield. As much as she didn't want to watch the Archon War take place, she also knew she had to follow them. She had no memory of any of these events, and yet they seemed so real that she couldn't just dismiss them either.
From what she could see, the twins seemed to be fighting well. They worked together, preventing any gods from harming either them or Khaenri'ah. It was just like how they fought together now. From what she saw, she felt confident they could win.
But when she blinked, the scene somehow changed. She saw herself lying on the ground, the blood staining her beautiful white clothes as Aether held her close. All the other gods were gone now.
All that was left was her and her brother, and she was looking worse for ware.
"Lumine, please..." Aether spoke softly, hugging his sister closer, "Why did you save me like that?" She could hear his voice break, and it broke her heart along with it.
She watched herself cough up blood, clearly fighting for her life in these last moments. Yet, she didn't remember this at all.
"I'm sorry...I couldn't let you get hurt," She whispered, "Please protect Khaenri'ah, Aether."
"Don't go," He spoke, voice barely audible, "I can save you. We just need..." She weakly shook her head.
"There's not enough time," She whispered, coming to terms with her own fate.
"But we've always...had enough time," His voice broke all over again. Her eyes could barely stay open now, and he knew they had mere seconds left together now.
"Everything will be...Alright..." She trailed off. And with that, she breathed her final breath before disintegrating into ash as it blew away in the wind.
Aether was left hugging the air as he sobbed. Paimon turned to the real Lumine now.
"Is this real?" She asked hugging her tighter, "Did you really...Die?" Lumine didn't even know the answer herself. She didn't think she and Aether had ever visited Teyvat before the day they met the Heavenly Principles, so this didn't seem possible.
Now, Aether finally stood, looking down at his hands. He grunted in frustration when nothing happened, then glanced up at Celestia, which still hovered above the palace of Khaenri'ah.
"The seven seats have been claimed," he whispered, feeling the lack of power in his body now that he was coming down from the fight, and then turned to the sky again, "The seven remaining will only get stronger now...I can't do this without you, sister." Without both twins, he knew Khaenri'ah wouldn't be protected enough. They were strongest when they were together; that was always true.
The war had ended by now, since the seven Archons were chosen. Lumine watched the old man of Khaenri'ah beg Aether not to leave, but to no avail. The blonde knew he couldn't protect their home without his sister, and his only focus now was bringing her back, one way or another.
"I'll be back," he whispered as he walked down the steps for the last time, "You just have to hold out until then. And when I return, I'll bring Lumine with me. Then everything can return to normal. I just need to bring her back." With that, he disappeared from the scene.
Everything disappeared for a moment, and then a new sight flashed before Lumine's eyes.
It was Aether, and he had fallen to his knees in the newly destroyed ruins of Khaenri'ah. Tears streamed down his face, and he had a hand over his mouth to choke back his sobs.
"I remember..." He whispered to himself, "This...This was our home."
..........
When Lumine opened her eyes again, she felt normal; not like she had during that vision. Paimon lay next to her, with the night sky above them, this time only housing two stars. Slowly, she pushed herself up to a seated position, with Paimon coming to hover next to her.
The two found themselves on the ground of what seemed to be a huge floating island, and there was a lone tower at the middle of it. From what she understood, this had to be Celestia.
"I see you're awake," The goddess spoke, and the traveler turned her attention to the woman floating not far from her.
She wanted to jump up, to pull out her sword and prepare for a fight, but her body felt too heavy. It was as if she were rooted to the ground. Paimon took it upon herself to defend Lumine.
"Leave her alone!" The little pixie shouted, flying in front of her friend. This only seemed to further amuse the god, because she let out a chuckle.
"As I said before, I really didn't expect the two of you to get along so well." She sighed contentedly, "but I suppose that just means my plan worked out.
"W-what are you talking about?!" Paimon exclaimed, still confused about how the god seemed to know her. The Heavenly Principles only ignored her.
"You remember now, don't you?" She asked Lumine, who glared at her, finally pulling herself up off the ground. "I'll take that as a yes." The goddess continued, "Oh, you must be so angry with your brother for keeping it from you. I know I would be if someone close to me did the same."
"How am I alive?" Lumine asked finally, "Those visions...They weren't just visions, they were memories, weren't they?" For a moment, the goddess seemed surprised that she spoke up. Finally, she shook off the shock and nodded.
"Of course, they were my own memories, to be precise," She replied, "And that twin of yours claimed I didn't know anything about you." She crossed her arms, a small pout appearing on her lips.
"Then how am I here?" Lumine questioned again, "I watched myself die!" Paimon turned, putting a hand on her shoulder for comfort, but the blonde kept her gaze on the god in front of her.
"Yes, you did die," the Heavenly Principles smiled, "But I suppose he brought you back. Don't ask me how, I wouldn't know, but I can tell it's true because you no longer have the connection to this world you once had. Not in the way he does."
Now, Lumine paused. She recalled what Nahida, the dendro archon had once told her during her time in Sumeru, how she'd talked about the descenders. She'd said Lumine was classed as one, an otherworldly being entering Teyvat, yet Aether was not. On top of that, there were records about him in Irminsul, where there were none on Lumine.
"Now you're understanding." The god spoke up, a smile on her face, "Your homecoming here meant the arrival of a new descender, where your twin's did not, because he was already from this world."
The more Lumine thought about it, the more it made sense. If she were killed and then resurrected through other means, that would explain why she had no memory of her prior life in Teyvat. It would also explain the connection she felt to Khaenri'ah, despite having never been there before in this lifetime.
"Then if that's the case, what do you want with her?" Paimon spoke up defensively, turning the god's attention to her.
"Oh, I suppose you wouldn't know, seeing as how I erased those memories of yours too..." She spoke to herself.
"What?!" Paimon cried, "What are you talking about? Paimon doesn't even know you!"
"Exactly," The goddess smiled, "Well, I don't mind explaining, considering all of this is about to be over." She cleared her throat, as if she were about to begin telling a bedtime story.
"I, little Paimon, am your creator." She spoke, "When the travelers entered this world, I sensed the presence of a fourth descender, and I couldn't just allow her to leave without saying hello. That's why I separated them, and sent you to accompany her on her journey."
"Why would you do that?" Paimon asked, beyond confused.
"So you could prepare her to meet me now," The Heavenly Principles explained, "She needed a guide to help her through all those trials, so why not send someone of my own making? Of course, I erased your memories of me before sending you out to her, only leaving you with the subconscious goal of meeting the one and only traveler. I didn't want you making a mistake and spilling the beans, after all."
There was a moment of silence as Lumine glanced at Paimon. The little pixie shook slightly at the news. She hadn't expected to hear something so shocking about herself, too. Finally, she turned to her traveling companion.
"T-traveler, Paimon's so sorry..." She whimpered, grabbing onto her arm again, "Paimon...Paimon didn't know about any of this!" With that, she started crying into the girl's sleeve.
"It's alright, Paimon." Lumine replied calmly before turning back to the god. "Then what was all of this for? Why did you go to so much trouble?"
The goddess only stared her down, a smirk playing on her lips as she shrugged.
"For you, of course."
There was a long pause before anyone spoke again. Neither Lumine nor Paimon had expected the development, but in the end, it was Paimon that recovered from the shock first.
"What do you mean 'for her'?" She demanded, "What do you want with her?!"
The god turned to the little pixie, an annoyed expression crossing her face. With a sigh, she replied.
"Lumine and I are one in the same."
"I'm nothing like you," The blonde was quick to reply, venom in her words.
"But you are a descender, are you not?" The goddess snapped. As much as she hated it, Lumine could not argue that. "We have that much in common, though you may not care to admit it."
"Y-you're also a descender?" Paimon asked, only deepening the god's glare. She only nodded.
"I was the first, to be specific," glancing at the little pixie one more time, she turned her gaze to the night sky, tracing the two remaining stars with her finger, "When I came to this world, it was still in peace, though not for long. As you saw, not only did the Archon War leave many places devastated, but the death of so many gods, beings that had been overseeing so many aspects of our reality, left it completely imbalanced."
"Paimon doesn't remember hearing anything about that," Paimon piped up, "We weren't lead to believe that the gods deaths left much impact."
"That is because most people do not know," The Heavenly Principles snapped at her, making Paimon jump back in fear, hiding behind Lumine's shoulder, "The only ones that could possibly know the true consequences of that war are the Archon's themselves and the few survivors of Khaenri'ah, if even. The Archons were the ones to request my help in the first place, back when they were first starting their rulership."
"What are you getting at?" Lumine demanded, tired of her beating around the bush.
"Don't you understand?" The god replied, "I was the one to rebalance this world. I was the one to save it when the heavens came crashing down. When you met your demise and your brother departed, I was here."
"Ugh, just tell us what you did!" Paimon shouted, stomping her little feet in the air for emphasis. The god rolled her eyes, floating closer to the pair.
"Traveler," she spoke so calmly that it caught Lumine slightly off guard, "You are familiar with the so called 'false sky,' are you not?" Frowning, the blonde nodded after a moment. It had been mentioned to her by a few different people, but she still had yet to understand what it meant.
"That is how I saved this world." The god replied simply. When neither of them seemed to understand, she groaned. "I made that sky! All the stars you used to see, the clouds, the sun, and the moon, they were all me!"
She watched Lumine's face carefully for a reaction, but the girl only frowned.
"Surely you've noticed something different about it?" The Heavenly Principles insisted, "That's because I made it what it is; a living being, at least, for now." Finally, Paimon managed to find the words to speak again.
"Y-you...What?" She sputtered, "A living being?!" The goddess nodded smugly.
"Indeed. After all, when the original cosmos were coming crashing down due to imbalance, what else was I to do than replace it with another, livelier one?"
"T-this is too much!" Paimon exclaimed, "It's not possible! It just isn't! The sky isn't a person." The Heavenly Principles stopped, glaring daggers at the now panicking pixie.
"You can't just create a new sky!" Paimon continued, almost hyperventilating now. Lumine reached out for her in an attempt to comfort her, but she just moved out of the way. "Traveler, how can you believe this?"
Before she could reply, more black and red cubes suddenly shot past Lumine's head, engulfing Paimon and causing her to disappear completely in the blink of an eye. Shocked and worried, the traveler turned back to the god.
"What did you do to her?!" She demanded, rushing forward to attack her. The god only dodged her by floating out of the way.
"Careful, or you'll fall right off Celestia," She yawned, "Don't worry, I only teleported her away from here. I wouldn't destroy something of my own making like that."
"What do you want from me?!" Lumine cried, tears brimming in her eyes. What had she done to deserve all this? The goddess's face softened for a moment, then returned to her smug expression again.
"Nothing. What I want is you yourself," She explained again, "You can feel it, can't you? How she's dying? All you have to do is look at the lack of stars to know it." She pointed up and Lumine felt her heartbeat quicken. 'She' had to be in reference to the stratosphere above them. So it really was a living being.
"Not just anyone can replace her," The god continued, smiling now that she saw the blonde begin to understand, "It takes someone special. Someone...Not from this world."
It was then that everything clicked for Lumine. She looked back up at the god in horror, but her smile only widened.
"So 'she' is..." She trailed off.
"The third descender, yes." The goddess replied, "Though, she was only to replace the second descender before her. And now that her power has run out, she's dying too. That's why I need you." Lumine was backing away now, the threat in front of her becoming all too real.
"When you said you saved this world..." She breathed, "You meant you lured others to it, only to turn them into a false sky to keep Teyvat in balance."
"Correct," The Heavenly Principles smiled, "I simply impart Celestia's will onto them, ridding them of their physical body and leaving their spirit and power to uphold the heavens you see every day and night." She paused, turning to look the blonde traveler in the eye, "I even lured you twins here. Surely, you didn't think you came here coincidentally just to pass through, did you?"
With that, she let out a cackle that chilled Lumine to the bone.
"Ah, my power truly knows no bounds." She sighed finally.
"We'll see about that," Lumine replied, lunging at her with her now pyro-infused sword. Although she wouldn't be as strong as the first time she'd met the god, when she and Aether had fought together, she wasn't going down without a fight, either, and she now had seven elements at her disposal.
..........
"Agh!" Lumine let out a cry as she was thrown into the rocky ground again. She had been fighting the goddess through the night, and the sun was going to rise soon. She could feel her body ready to give out but she forced herself to continue.
She refused to give in here, and yet, a part of her was still conflicted. Obviously, she didn't want to be a part of this god's plan, especially if it meant giving up everything; her physical body, her freedom, her brother. But at the same time, she knew that, during the time she'd spent in Teyvat, she'd learned more than she ever expected to about the world.
She'd met and made friends with countless people, seen every inch of every nation that made up the world. She had had the opportunity to witness all the beauty and pain of Teyvat. Should she succeed against the Heavenly Principles herself, what would become of all that? She couldn't just let it be destroyed.
Her internal battle did not make the fight any easier, and she finally fell to the god's hand. She lay on the ground, her sword kicked away so far that she couldn't even see it anymore.
The god's eyes bore into her as she raised a hand and several black and red cubes appeared in her palm. She seemed to be channeling a lot of energy, and Lumine knew this was probably the end. She didn't have the strength to move out of the way when the god shot a blast of power at her.
Luckily, someone managed to come to her rescue. Aether's silhouette entered her vision as he stepped in front of her, reflecting the attack just perfectly with his sword. It nearly hit the very god that had dealt it, but she moved out of the way just in time.
Finding new strength somewhere within her, Lumine stood up now, breathing heavily.
"Aether." She whispered, beaming.
"And Paimon!" A familiar voice added. It was only now that she noticed the little pixie creature hanging off her brother's scarf. Paimon let go, floating over to give the blonde girl a hug. Lumine returned it, then quickly picked her sword back up.
"Paimon- that's her name, right?" Aether replied as she went to his side, "She filled me in on everything." Lumine nodded, drawing her sword and preparing to finally fight alongside her twin again.
Now that they were reunited, she felt more powerful than before. They had always been stronger together, and she was surprised to see Aether's wings reappear on his back. Glancing behind her, she saw that her own had also returned. Turning her attention back to the god that had caused it all, a determined expression graced her face.
"I see the gang's all here," The goddess spat, readying her powers once more. Before she could even deal another attack, the twins rushed forward, covering one another just as they'd done so many timed before. It was as if they'd never been separated, and the Heavenly Principles hardly stood a chance.
Within moments, the two had dealt a devastating blow, finally knocking her to the ground for good.
Lumine and Aether were debating what to do about her when Paimon finally came over.
"She's a descender, isn't she?" The pixie questioned, "Couldn't you do what she was going to do to you and make her into the new sky?"
"That would only temporarily fix the problem," Lumine replied solemnly, "Eventually, she would die out just like the previous descender is now."
"We can't just leave Teyvat like this." Aether admitted. "Our Khaenri'ah may be gone now, but we owe it to this world to help."
"Then maybe you can fix the root of the problem?" Paimon suggested, "If the issue is that the world is imbalanced without all those other gods, maybe you two can rebalance it?"
"Impossible!" The goddess spat, turning the group's attention back to where she lay on the ground, blood flowing from the corner of her mouth, "That would mean getting rid of godlihood entirely. You would destroy the power of all remaining archons!"
"It would also mean changing the will of Celestia, the laws and authority of this world," Aether added, "I've been trying to do so with the abyss order for years."
"B-but there has to be a way!" Paimon cried, "we can't keep sacrificing descenders to keep the world turning."
"And why not?" The Heavenly Principles replied, "It's worked for me all these years! And you can't change Celestia's will; it would take the power of everyone in this world at once, and then some!"
Hearing this, Lumine turned to her twin, an idea forming in her mind. He seemed to know what she was thinking, and quickly nodded, watching as she made her way to the edge of Celestia, overlooking all of Teyvat.
She took a deep breath in, clearing her mind before she called out to everyone below.
'Please,' she called, 'Lend us your power. Help us save this world one last time.'
Her voice echoed across the nations. From the ruins of Khaenri'ah to the frozen mountains of Snezhnaya to the volcanoes of Natlan, the rivers of Fontaine, the desert and rainforest of Sumeru, the islands of Inazuma, the divine peaks of Liyue, and finally the winds of Mondstat, everyone whose lives she had touched could hear it.
Moments later, they all began to send her their power. Even the archons and former archons seemed to want to believe there was another way, one that didn't involve losing their traveler. She could feel it streaming through her heart and into her sword, and she knew Aether could feel it too. They turned back to the lone tower now, dropping their swords and making their way inside as the doors opened for them. Paimon followed closely, closing her eyes as she lent them even her own limited powers.
Inside the tower, the seven thrones were arranged in a circle, representing the archons. They each had the symbol of a gnosis etched into them, matching the gnoses held by each of the seven. There were cracks in the floor and ceilings, and lining the walls. It truly seemed to be imbalanced.
The twins stopped in the empty space inside the thrones, glancing at one another before taking each other's hands and turning back to back.
Although they weren't sure how this would work, it seemed almost instinctual as they reached out toward the space together, hands and eyes glowing a brilliant gold as they conveyed the strength of everyone in Teyvat, everyone they had ever met on their long journey to get where they were now.
Finally, the energy around them seemed to change. Lumine let one of her eyes open for a second, glancing at her heart, where a gold thread had materialized, stretching out and through the tower.
It connected to Aether to, then to Paimon, then to the goddess waiting outside, and then all across Teyvat, reaching every living soul the twins had ever come in contact with. It was a warm but not overbearing feeling, and in that moment, Lumine felt more connected with the world than she had been even before her death.
Outside, the seven symbols painted on the walls of the tower began to light up one by one, all glowing different colors.
From where she sat on the rocks, the Heavenly Principles gave a tiny smile, knowing they had somehow managed to do what she never thought possible. Finally, she gave in, letting her own power flow through to the travelers to complete the process. How she hated being proved wrong.
Now both twins felt even their eyes begin to glow a warm gold, but found that it was a comfort to them. Finally, the gold light died down and the thread disappeared into thin air. Lumine breathed a sigh of relief before turning to her twin, who seemed equally happy. Grabbing Paimon and dragging her along with them, they rushed out of the tower to see if it really had worked.
The sun had finally started to rise, but the few stars left were still visible in the sky. Soon enough, though, it began to fall away, cracking and splitting off to reveal a new cosmos entirely. This one was not as bright, nor was it something that could be considered alive, but it held countless stars, all glittering overhead. Moreover, no one had needed to be sacrificed for it to exist.
This truly was a real sky, and the very sight of it nearly made Lumine cry.
Out of the corner of her eye, she could see the sparkle of a translucent figure at the other side of Celestia. Though she couldn't make out the figure's features, she could clearly see them smile brightly at her before they finally disappeared, floating off into the air. It was as if the entire world had breathed a sigh of relief with this new change.
"What now?" Paimon asked, breaking the silence at last. Lumine turned to her, for once not knowing the answer.
"Yes, what now?" The Heavenly Principles agreed, finally bringing her body to stand as she dusted herself off. "You've changed the will of Celestia, shaken the heavens, and successfully rebalanced this world. But do you plan to stay?"
"Right, Paimon guesses you two did used to be travelers, before all of this happened." Paimon replied, tilting her head.
"That's true..." Lumine sighed, glancing back at her brother, "but this was our home even before that, wasn't it?" He nodded, scratching the back of his neck sheepishly.
"Yeah, I only regained my memories of it when I entered Khaenri'ah's ruins." He admitted, "Before then, even I didn't know."
"You didn't remember either?" Paimon questioned, "But why? You didn't die like Lumine, did you?"
"No," Aether replied, "but as I remember, resurrecting her came at a huge cost, and losing all my prior memories was part of it. For both of us, the day she came back just felt like the day we were born."
"So even you weren't aware." Lumine breathed, glad he hadn't just been lying to her their whole lives.
"No, not until we were separated." He replied, "I would have told you, but I felt like memories like those were something you had to rediscover yourself. Or, in this case, with her help." He gestured towards the Heavenly Principles, who took a small bow.
"Then what are you two going to do now?" Paimon asked. There was a small silence for a moment before the goddess behind them spoke up.
"Well, I'll tell you what I'm going to do." She smirked, coming over to Paimon, who quickly backed up into Lumine's arms.
"W-what's that?" The pixie questioned.
"I will be giving up my role as enforcer of Heavenly Principles," she replied simply. From the silence that followed, it was clear that the others were in shock. "What?" She continued, "there's no need for me to maintain the false sky anymore, and I must say, I think I've done plenty for this world."
She seemed to think to herself for a moment before adding on.
"Plus, the third descender is not dead yet. Thanks to the two of you, she can live on, even if it's different from before." She sighed, looking up to the brand new sky, "I need to atone for what I've put her through."
"Then who will take over your job?" Paimon asked finally, crossing her arms in suspicion.
"Why, you, of course." The goddess smiled, making the tiny girl's jaw dropped.
"PAIMON?" She cried, "You really want Paimon to do it?"
"Of course," The Heavenly Principles replied, "I created you, after all, so it would only make sense that you success me."
"B-but Paimon isn't qualified for that!" Paimon replied in a panic.
"It's okay, Paimon." Lumine said gently as she touched her companion's shoulder, "we can help you."
"You'd do that?" Paimon asked in disbelief.
"Of course," Aether replied, "you've done a lot for us, and there's no one I think would be better for the job."
"Then...Then Paimon will try!" The pixie exclaimed, a new determination flowing through her.
"Wonderful," the goddess replied with a smile that didn't reach her eyes, "But before that, there's something you both may want to see." With that, she waved her hand, engulfing the group in another vision, just like the ones Lumine and Paimon had experienced earlier of their past in Khaenri'ah.
This time, they found themselves in Mondstat, surrounded by Hillichurls. Only, the Hillichurls weren't quite the same as they remembered. One by one, they were each enveloped in golden light, their masks and manes falling away to reveal human faces. They were returning to being the people that had once occupied Khaenri'ah.
Before the twins could think, the scene changed so that it was now taking place in Liyue, with the same things happening. Then it switched to Inazuma, and then Sumeru, and then every other nation they had visited. The people of Khaenri'ah had finally been saved with the change to Celestia's will, so it seemed their actions had had more positive effects than anticipated.
Finally, they were back where they started on the floating island, recovering from the shock.
"I thought you should know what became of the people you protected." The goddess that was still with them explained.
"Thank you." Aether replied, a tear rolling down his cheek.
"Does this mean the archons will let Khaenri'ah be?" Lumine spoke up. The god nodded.
"Celestia's entire will has been changed, something even they are incapable of, so who are they to oppose it?"
"The people will need some help rebuilding our home," Aether smiled, taking his sister's hand, "I know you wanted to keep traveling, but what do you think about sticking in Teyvat a while longer."
She just smiled and nodded, following him as he flew down from Celestia with their newly returned wings. Paimon quickly floated after them.
The three could be seen from everywhere in Teyvat as they descended, gliding across the brand new sky as the sun finally made its way up in the beautiful morning.
Although no one else in Teyvat had witnessed what went on in Celestia, they could all feel what was happening. Even without fully knowing it, it was clear to them that those three figures and this brand new sky meant things had changed for the better.
The three finished their journey back in the ruins of Khaenri'ah, where they prepared to greet all the returning residents once they made their way back.
Despite all the changes they'd undergone since they first lived there, they knew they would always be the protectors of Khaenri'ah.
Paimon smiled brightly, flying over to where the twins stood amidst the rubble. Even the destroyed nation didn't seem as hopeless anymore. Though she'd never been good with words, she spoke anyway, conveying exactly what the whole world wanted to say with just one sentence.
'Thank you, travelers.'
