What Native people say about the use of sage: you can use sage, but you cannot smudge as nothing you are doing (waving sage around) is actually smudging. Smudging is a ceremony and you are, we promise, not smudging. Please buy sage from either us, or someone who sources the sage from us. White sage may not be considered endangered by the US government but corperate sourcing is making it difficult for us to source sage for our own religious purposes. Let alone to sell it.
What white people hear: never use sage ever, don’t ever buy it, don’t own it, don’t even look at it.
Look, y’all. There’s a couple of facets to my talk today.
1) Yes! You can buy sage! You really, truly can! Buy it from either native sellers (go to a powwow! Eat our food, buy our stuff, watch some dancing!) Or buy it from a seller who sources the sage from native people. Pick one. And no, buying it from 5 Below doesn’t count.
2) you CANNOT smudge. This isn’t just you “shouldn’t”— this is a YOU ARE INCAPABLE OF SMUDGING. Waving a sage stick around your doorways IS NOT SMUDGING. It is smoke clensing. Smudging, depending on the tradition and tribe, could easily have dancing and drums involved. You, as a white person, do not have the cultural BACKGROUND to even know how it works. At all. Period.
3) please, for FUCKS SAKE, stop making posts here on tumblr where you tell other white people about cultural appropriation and what they can and cannot do. Please stop, your license has been revoked because none of you bother to get the facts right. We native people are FULLY CAPABLE OF DOING IT OURSELVES. Consider instead: a) reblogging our posts where we talk about it! We’re here! We have made posts!! b) Making a post that states what we said and then LINKS BACK TO US. Screenshot with a link if you must. Stop centering your own voices in these conversations. You are already centered in everything, stop centering yourselves in a native space.
I’m tired of this nonsense, y’all.
Thanks for coming to my TedTalk ™

if anyone would like to learn a couple tricks for carving pumpkins:
- dont cut out the top to scoop out the seeds, cut out the bottom instead. this way the pumpkin doesnt cave in on itself and lasts longer - sprinkle some cinnamon inside at the top after carving. this way when you put the candle in it smells like pumpkin pie

Things to Research Before Working with the Fae
Tumblr media
Research is the most important thing to do before heading into Faery work and witchcraft. You want to have a lot of in depth and versatile knowledge covering many areas of the topic so you’ll be able to understand and interact with the Fair Folk! If you don’t want to work with the Fair Folk you can use this list to help yourself understand them and take the proper measure if you ever stumble upon them. I know the list could go on forever but I’m compiling the topics I find build a good foundation of understanding. I have compiled this list to give those interested guidance and a push in the right direction, it is best you do your own research before asking other’s personal knowledge and opinions!!
The Basics
Terminology ( Fae, faery, fairy, changeling, seelie, unseelie, sidhe, etc)
The Origins of the Fae (Tuatha de Dannan, Aos Sí, Tylwyth Teg)
Faeries in Different Cultures: Celtic (Irish, Scottish, Gaulish, French), Norse, Influences from Greek and Roman culture.
Folklore & Myths!! ex. Oisin and Tír na nÓg , Fenian Cycle, Arthurian Legend.
Celtic Gods, Goddesses & Heroes- strong influences and connections to the Fae
Types of Faeries (study diverse types from pixies, brownies, pooka to Kelpies, Bwbach and Red caps) *Make sure you can at least answer who, what and where about them.
The Otherworlds (Tir na Nog, Caer Arianrhod, Annwn, Alfheim, Svartalfheim, etc.)
Faery Landmarks (fairy tree, fairy ring, fairy hill)
Signs of the Fae
Sacred Trees and Plants (Hawthorn)
Protection!! very important
*Bonus if you learn Celtic Culture
Getting into Working with Them
Connecting to Nature and the Land
How to Banish Faeries & Protect yourself, house, family, etc.
Faery Behaviour and Proper Etiquette
Proper Offerings, How to give an Offering
Animals associated with the Fair Folk and Why? (raven, deer, etc)
Faery Festivals and Holidays (Samhain, Midsummer, Beltane)
Why certain things offend them- iron, saying “thank you”,etc.
The Courts (Seelie, Unseelie, trooping fairies, solitary)
Setting up a Faery Altar
How to work with them in Rituals
Faery Flowers, herbs and crystals
A proper and personal way to communicate with them!!this means developing psychic ability, tarot, meditation, signs, etc.
Hagstones, heptagram/faery star
Some Good Books :)
The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries, by W. Y. Evans Wentz

seasonal recipe ideas!
- 🌾🥮🍂🌻🌿✨⛅️
just thinking about a few random recipes and stuff i want to play around with, with seasonal ingredients this autumn! i figured a few other kitchen witches out there might appreciate the brainstorm, i’ll probably be adding to this list more into the season <3
[ brown butter sage sauce ]
good on/with; pastas & ravioli (pumpkin or butternut squash filling would be a great combo!!), over poultry especially turkey, could be great on roasted potatoes or even on mashed potatoes, roasted/sautéed veggies, etc :)
general how-to; melt down about a stick of butter until completely liquidy, add in about 12-16 sage leafs to your taste, and crack in some fresh black pepper for a bit more flavor dimension
[ caramel apple crumble cheesecake ]
good with; warm/hard cider, honey milk, eggnog, mead
general how-to; generic cheesecake base, or swirl in some caramel if you’re feeling wild, throw together a crumble to put on top made of diced up granny smith apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, and some oats; put it on top of your cheesecake and drizzle that with a homemade caramel (or salted caramel) sauce! you could also make this as more of like a cheesecake bar in a square pan than a traditional round cheesecake to make it cozy looking
[ elderberry mead ]
good with/for; anything seasonal meal-wise, great to drink around the mabon bonfire, would probably be spectacular with some sort of goat cheese snack, a great way to kick up your immune system this time of year and also get buzzed, antioxidants, what can i say!
general how to; okay so mead is a whole thing i can’t teach but, just like, go for about 5 lbs of raw honey, maybe 10-12 cups of elderberries, 4 cinnamon sticks, 6 cloves, and a packet of yeast, take all that and split it in two one gallon jugs, if you know how to make mead you’re fine from here i hope, but if you don’t know how to make mead i highly recommend learning how through youtube, it’s an amazing way to connect to your craft!!
[ eggplant meatballs ]
good with; stuffed baked sweet potato, butternut squash/pumpkin ravioli, goat cheese ravioli, or just some marinara and spaghetti/angel hair, maybe some garlic bread with that sage butter on top!
general how-to; roast up an eggplant, mix it in with some eggs, breadcrumbs, parmesan, and seasonings to taste, add on some marinara or sauce of your choice and that’s about it

Quick reminder that we are going through a global pandemic right now, which is a major stressful event.
It is stressful even if no one you know is sick.
It is stressful even if you are working from home.
It is stressful even if you have no work / school responsibilities.
You are entitled to your stress. You may find yourself crying randomly, or getting randomly angry, or super tired, or bouncing off the walls, or unable to keep a thought in your head for more than 30 seconds. This is an expected stress response.
Give yourself a break. The world is not normal right now. Focus on just getting through it as best you can, utilizing whatever coping methods do the job. This is not forever.

A Lazy Witch's Mabon
Today is Mabon (September 21st-23rd, technically celebrations can last through the 28th though) this is the holiday where the day and night are again equal right before the nights start getting longer than the days and the cold sets in. Around this time is when the second harvest would take place for those with farms.
The main themes that are celebrated in this holiday are balance, changing of the seasons, gratitude, and sharing.
Here are some simple things you can do to celebrate!
Decorate your altar, you can do this with just things you have around the house or on the ground. If you live in an area with pinecones, those work just fine! Acorns? Perfect! Leaves? Wonderful! Any red, yellow, brown, or orange cloth? Include it! (This can even be clothing if you don't mind having it on your altar)
Since feasts are out of the question (partly because that's a lot of work for a lazy witch guide, partly because there's a pandemic and having a feast goes against social distancing), you can see incorporate the holiday into your personal meals. Have a lot of seasonal foods, like carrots and potatoes. Apples and pomegranates are also used traditionally to celebrate mabon.
Either set up or recharge and check on home protection wards. Especially as the cold season approaches (and Samhain on roughly a month) you want you house protected from negativity.
Make a talisman or sigil to help with seasonal depression. Something that will help keep your mood and energy balanced over the next few seasons until the weather warms up again. Might post a very simple talisman spell for a necklace after this.
Make or buy a potpourri. For those that don't know what it is, its a collection of dried herbs, leaves, flower petals and spices that are used to make you house smell good. Put traditional ma on herbs and spices in there as well as acorns or pinecones, bark from trees, and more to give it a more fall, woodsy look. Just put it out in pretty bowls around your house and you're all decorated!
Spend some time outside and take notice of the change in the air. Is the air colder? Are the plants changing? Are leaves changing colors yet? Meditate on this.
You don't have to go all out for every holiday every year. Be easy with yourself and do as much as you can while preserving your mental health.
Happy Mabon witches 💛🍃🍂🍃🍂🧡
