I just want to say something to any women raising daughters – the way you, yourself, behave as a women will have a huge impact on how your daughters behave.

My mom does not wear makeup. When I was in high school and wanted to experiment with makeup, she bought it for me, because she’s a mother who loves her daughter and wanted to be supportive.

I didn’t stick with it for long. It was stressful and expensive. I hold to this day the reason I could drop makeup so easily is because I’ve grown up watching a women I admire who didn’t touch the stuff. Even surrounded by constant messages to the contrary, I could look to my mom and think, “I don’t have to do this.”

You can tell you daughters that they don’t have to wear makeup, and maybe they’ll believe you – but if you never leave the house without it, they probably won’t.

I often think about the cultural conversation about “women’s sexuality”, and how this is often used as an explanation as to why women to engage in various forms of sex work. As if the height of female sexuality is performing for male sexual gratification.

It took me years to unlearn what I thought was “my sexuality”. When really, it was me performatively serving men in bed in order to be the hot girl. Of course, none of these acts like blowjobs, face-fucking, rough sex ever involved ACTUAL sexual pleasure for me. There was so stimulation of the clit. No oral. Nothing.

So was that my “sexuality”? Is that what I fantasized about? How many women spend years having sex that gets them nowhere near orgasm? How many women spend sex absolutely BEGGING for their partner to give them an orgasm with no result?

We’re supposed to get wet over giving blowjobs, orgasm from anal, and love facials despite the fact that none of these things will anatomically stimulate the clitoris and give a woman a real, genuine orgasm.

Is sex work empowered women expressing their sexuality freely, or men’s consumption of female bodies?
