"Mums, Yer Boys" reaches 10,000 reads!
Tumblr media
10,000 reads for "Mums, Yer Boys are Cryin'" which is a terrible title but a sweet story from 'way back when I first started writing fanfics -- this one was meant to be a one-shot, like everything else I'd written up til then, but somehow the story of the teenaged Paul searching for John after Julia's death turned into a second chapter where he takes control (and care) of both John and a dour, miserable Mimi and that turned into a chapter about how empty and lonely their lives feel and then suddenly it seemed like I had absolutely no control over the story of these two young characters: There is 17 year old John Lennon -- wild in grief, angry, lashing out and desperate to find a place where he belongs, desperate to figure out HOW to find a life he can stand to live, in a world where he can never fit in to. With Julia's death he is pretty much convinced he has nothing, is nothing in this miserable post-war Liverpool world. He is mean; he is funny; he is profane; he is needy. John can't see or identify his targets but he sprays his anger like a machine gun, not caring where it hits.
There's is 16 year-old Paul McCartney, precisely the opposite -- self-contained, private, all tucked in on himself and watchful. He is constantly on the lookout to see how he can control what is going on around him. He carries his own anger -- both at Liverpool and the world around him -- but it's entirely focused, better-directed, and dangerously quiet. He is kind; he is watchful; he is bossy; he is anxious; he is forgiving. If John is a machine gun, Paul is a suicide bomber who keeps resetting his timer. Together, both of them find a safe place to put their heartache, and the first stirrings of a longing that neither of them fully understand yet, but are tentatively ready to explore.
There is Mimi Smith, cold, snobby, snippy, unable to show herself (or the depths of her love) to her troubled nephew, and repeatedly thrown off her guard by the sheep-eyed, common boy who never lets her off the hook.
There is Julia, present only in death -- at her laying out, where John falls apart; at her funeral, which Paul attends while all in his head. There is Jim McCartney, stern, too quick with his hands, but capable of compassion, and even to admit his own failings, in time. There is George Harrison. A bit grubby. Always hungry, easily called out but a sure friend.
There is even Auntie Jin and her bowlful of "Irish witchery..." I've always been very grateful that people like this story, which probably could use some editing but I've never touched it. It just kind of tumbled from my keyboard and has always felt "true" to me in a way I can't explain, so I've just let it be. THANK YOU for reading it, and for some really wonderful, encouraging comments. You can read the whole story at A03.
And truly, thank you for reading this story and keeping it alive. Some it helped to build "Carry that Weight." This talented artist created this image several years ago. Not for the story but ... it really is perfectly suited to the final chapter.

why beatles why now
I'm exactly 3 weeks out today from incidentally pressing play on Peter Jackson's Beatles LOTR one ramblin' night and watching for maybe half an hour tops before before being so flooded. Flooded with the memories that in fact I knew every Beatles song back in the day--my first musical love as a teenager that I had just wandered off eventually from and forgotten. Flooded with the flash realization that every notion I'd had of the band AND their songs back then was highly restricted by my youth but also by the simplistic band mythologizing and lack of direct media of the 90's.
I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but surely I can't be the only one with this mind melting experience. How did you get here, blown away by the Beatles in year 2024?

pfft.
he loves the world
he loves the culture
he loves humanity, too.
when two people beam
saying hi to each other,
he looks over and smiles.
I dreamt of a life in his shape.
he tells me he has to go,
but he says he can stay
just a little bit more.
we walk into a gallery,
and when we're inside
surrounded by art
he doesn't just look, but he sees
he feels, and he is
moved and removed from himself.
and I want to kiss him so bad
but I talk instead.
and when it's finally time,
we say our goodbyes.
but I can feel it,
his hand is still reaching for mine.

Listen, if you ever find a little voice in your head debating whether or not to rid yourself of any Beatles memorabilia, ignore it, that's the devil talking.

PLAYBOY: "Ringo..."
RINGO: "Yes, PLAYBOY, sir?"
PLAYBOY: "How do you feel about the press? Has your attitude changed in the last year or so?"
RINGO: "Yes."
PLAYBOY: "In what way?"
RINGO: "I hate 'em more now than I did before."
-
PLAYBOY: "Did you know that the next day there was a letter in one of the Glasgow papers that accused you of directly 'inciting' the violence?"
RINGO: "How can they say that about us We don't even wiggle. It's not bloody fair."
GEORGE: "Bastards!"
-
PLAYBOY: "And then, before World War Two, there was the swing craze with Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw, and all the dancing in the aisles. And now you--- before...."
JOHN: "Hold on! It's not our fault!"
PLAYBOY: "We're not saying you may have anything to do with inciting a war..."
PAUL: "Thanks."
-
PLAYBOY: "You guys seem to be pretty irreverent characters. Are any of you churchgoers?"
JOHN: "No."
GEORGE: "No."
PAUL: "Not particularly. But we're not antireligious. We probably seem antireligious because of the fact that none of us believe in God."
JOHN: "If you say you don't believe in God, everybody assumes you're antireligious, and you probably think that's what we mean by that. We're not quite sure 'what' we are, but I know that we're more agnostic than atheistic."
PLAYBOY: "Are you speaking for the group, or just for yourself."
JOHN: "For the group."
GEORGE: "John's our official religious spokesman."
-
PAUL: "But you know, in America..."
GEORGE: "They were more shocked by us saying we were agnostics."
JOHN: "Then they went potty; they couldn't take it. Same as in Australia, where they couldn't stand us not liking sports."
-
PLAYBOY: "To bring up another topic that's shocking to some, how do you feel about the homosexual problem?"
GEORGE: "Oh yeah, well, we're all homosexuals, too."
RINGO: "Yeah, we're all queer."
PAUL: "But don't tell anyone."
-
PLAYBOY: "Are you guys getting tired of talking?"
JOHN: "No."
PAUL: "No. Let's order some drinks. Scotch or Coke?"
JOHN: "I'll have chocolate."
GEORGE: "Scotch for me and Paul... and chocolate for the Beatle teenager."
JOHN: "Scotch is bad for your kidneys."
-
PLAYBOY: "Followed closely by Beatle Dolls. Have you seen them?"
GEORGE: They're actually life size, you know."
PLAYBOY: "The ones we've seen are only about five inches high."
PAUL: "Well, we're midgets, you see."
-
GEORGE: "Who'd want an ugly old crap doll like that?"
PLAYBOY: "Would you prefer a George doll, George?"
GEORGE: "No, but I've got a Ringo doll at home."

Colin Hanton played for the last time with the Quarrymen at Finch Lane bus depot. This gig had been arranged for them by the father of George Harrison who was a bus driver himself. It was in January 1959. According to Colin they had been asked to play two sessions and the manager from the Pavilion Theatre in Lodge Lane was in the audience to audition the Quarrymen for a spot in his theatre. The first session went down quite well with the audience but after this word got around that there were free pints of beer available for the group at the bar. The whole of the group were therefore pretty drunk by the time it came to doing the second set. John and Paul who were "under the influence" began to take the mick out of George Harrison, which did not go down very well with George's parents who were sitting in the audience. Afterwards the manager of the Pavilion spoke to the group back stage and started to criticize their performance, saying that if they wanted a resident spot in his club then their behaviour and attitude would have to improve one hundred percent. John did not take very kindly to being told what to do and told the manager to "get lost". According to Colin, on the bus home afterwards Pete Shotton and Colin had a row with Paul. After that fiasco Colin never continued with the group and apparently he was never asked to return.

This is kinda a prequel, but if you haven't read "the Lost is Found," you really won't get this take.
A young teenage John Lennon wants to find out if an old bridge in the outskirts of the city of Liverpool, is really haunted.
An old rumor about a tragic woman, and her ill-fated children, led the stories of her and her children being the spirits of this place. So John figures midnight on Halloween would confirm if the legends were true

Recently updated work!
Taking place in the 1950s, on a cold night in Liverpool England, a 15 year old Paul McCartney has to walk through a haunted cemetery, to earn the admiration of his friends. Especially the leader of the pack, John Lennon!
Please share, drop a comment, and give a kudos if you think I've earned it.
