For anyone keeping track (no one), I have started watching the first Avengers film (MCU not the 60s TV show) but only while eating lunch so it's gonna take a while. So far Nick Fury has been assembling the Avengers (the film was initially released in the UK as Avengers Assemble - because of that 60s TV show - but it's not called that on D+ so I'm calling it what the Americans called it, just FYI) even though there's not yet anything for them to avenge as That Suit Guy (j/k I know his name too!!) isn't dead yet, and now they're on THE FUCKING VALIANT FROM DR WHO and I assume we're gonna continue assembling for a while as they're not all there yet.
MEANWHILE Loki (who is neither an alligator nor a woman in this???) is in a SECRET UNDERGROUND LAIR with a bunch of his stans who are... idk something technobabble that involves irridium and anti-protons. He is there looking for the tesseract on behalf of ???? who I know will be revealed 47 films from now as... no, wait, it wasn't, was it? That was just announced on a website or something? So it could be LITERALLY ANYONE. The Avengers (in-progress) also seem to be after that thing, but I have already forgotten why everyone is wanting it, assuming it was mentioned (it probably was).
Thor hasn't shown up yet, but Arrows Hawkeye is working as a Loki Stan and there's Steve Rogers and THE HULK and The Only Woman One, whose power is that she's a Cold War assassin (??) and I think this one is the film where she gets called a cunt (!) and honestly I am not sure which of the men she's getting officially shipped with, I think Arrows Hawkeye though? Fairly sure, as the alternative is that a man and a woman like each other as people but not in a lusty way, which would never happen obviously. (Hey I may ship mostly het* pairings but I don't always like it!)
Based on the Valiant (if u don't know who she is get da hell out of here!) I am guessing that the film ends with Loki dying in Thor's arms romantically but then I remembered that I know it can't because one of Loki got kidnapped from... either the end of this film or the start of the next one or POSSIBLY just from a later film's time-travel bit (???) but like... maybe they've edited this film secretly and I was right after all? But nobody else has watched it on Disney + recently so nobody knows yet? IT COULD HAPPEN.
Not sure what to make of this film so far, a lot's been going on yet also not much has been going on, and the one I like best so far (Suit Guy) is gonna die (NOT EVEN IN THOR'S ARMS ROMANTICALLY) and god Iron Man really hasn't aged well now that we have that one tech billionaire being a twat in public all the time to remind us what such people tend to be like. WHERE IS THOR????
*I say het but everyone in everything is bisexual, I know this because I thought of it and announced it on tumblr and will now say "I don't make the rules" to make it an objective FACT. I don't make the rules!!!
#the avengers (mcu edition not the 60s one)#(though if u close one eye and tilt ur head the black widow looks a wee bit like emma peel maybe?)#i like to think the lair of loki stans exists after this to post angrily on social media about how actually he did nothing wrong etc etc#let me know if loki's just working from a subway station that's still in use in this that'd be hilarious he'd be so annoyed by it all#torn on the tortured-by-thanos issue so far he does look messy but he might just have the flu and didn't want to back out#a lot of people are depending on him to jumpstart a movie superhero franchise he can't just take the day off can he#if loki took care of himself thor would be LITERALLY UNEMPLOYED how could he? how could YOU?#(the 'god of thunder' thing isn't a job he doesn't get paid for it so it's just a hobby)#(he doesn't even monetise that hobby! you think iron man would give you storms for free? EXACTLY. he'd have a patreon AT LEAST)#(“if you enjoyed this torrential rain pls tip me on ko-fi which is not pronounced like you think it is because it's a really BAD pun”)#mcu tag i guess#and whatever the fuck my loki character tag was#like i said i really do need to categorise my lokis more it's been bothering me for a while#reminder: i am here because they cast a woman in a previously-male role and SHE'S NOT EVEN IN THIS FILM. OR ANY OF THEM. D:#don't think the alligator's gonna turn up here either :( :( :(#otherwise it's just kind of fascinating what this film assumes i do and don't know about these characters#nick fury's a goth right?

July was a month of quality, not quantity, reading-wise. I read some truly excellent books, they just largely happened to be thick and take a fair bit of brain power. And one of these months I’ll manage to get to more than a single book off my physical TBR, I swear. Oh well. At least I only bought one book again? (In my defense, it was only $4.) Oh, and my Sherlock Holmes-via-podcast read-through finally did The Sign of the Four! This feels like a milestone, somehow.
Outside of reading, this was a pretty good month! I saw friends for the first time since the fall, I went to outdoor live theatre for the first time in three years and finally got to see Something Rotten!, and I attended my first official Pride event, which went about as well as I expected it too, in that I talked to two people in three hours. I never socialize with strangers and I’ve been trying to build up my people-confidence after two years of “talking to another person could literally kill you”, so this is a big win.
I need to do better about reading Canadian for the rest of the year, though. I feel like I’ve been letting that seriously slide. And I’m very hopeful that a lot of my anticipated new releases will come in for me at the library soon!
And as always, in order of how glad I am to have read them, my July reading list:

The Hallowed Hunt - Lois McMaster Bujold A prince has been killed and Ingrey must bring his killer to justice. Arguing self-defense might save her. Her accidental spirit animal might doom her. And there’s much more afoot. - warning: misogynist characters, attempted violence against women, animal death

China intends to develop fixed-wing transport aircraft for its third aircraft carrier
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 07/01/2022 - 16:00 in Military
China intends to develop a transport aircraft based on the KJ-600 for its third aircraft carrier, the Fujian, equipped with electromagnetic catapults.
The Naval Aviation University of the People's Liberation Army of China (PLA) recently organized a series of training sessions in realistic combat scenarios with Y-7 transport aircraft at an aerodrome in northern China recently, China's National Radio reported on Wednesday.
Tumblr media
Among a series of training courses, the pilot cadets conducted ground simulation training with transport aircraft, aiming at landing on aircraft carriers.

China's two current aircraft carriers, Liaoning and Shandong, do not have fixed-wing aircraft because they use ski jump ramps that limit the takeoff weight of the aircraft. But these aircraft will soon be able to operate on the third newly launched aircraft carrier in the country, Fujian, which uses electromagnetic catapults, Chinese analysts told the Global Times.
"Fixed-wing transport aircraft are advantageous over aircraft carrier helicopters in terms of range, speed and cargo capacity, which is why China should have them, now that it has an aircraft carrier equipped with catapult," Fu Qianshao, a Chinese military aviation expert, told a semi-official news agency.

Using the Y-7 for simulated training is a good choice because the general characteristics, such as the size of the Y-7, are similar to a cargo plane transported by an aircraft carrier, Fu said.
The U.S. has the C-2 Greyhound cargo plane for its aircraft carriers and has developed E-2 Hawkeye early warning aircraft based on it.

KJ-600 Aircraft.
China allegedly developed the KJ-600 early warning aircraft for its third aircraft carrier, and developing a cargo aircraft based on the KJ-600 would be easy, Fu said, noting that it could also generate more variants of special missions, including aircraft-port-based fixed-winged anti-submarine warfare aircraft.
The Fujian should also be equipped with an improved version of the J-15 heavy fighter compatible with catapult launches, an electronic warfare variant of the J-15, a next-generation poacher allegedly called the J-35, and armed reconnaissance drones, according to media reports.

Angel Reese Criticized For Taunting Opponent What's more entertaining than watching sports? Probably seeing the unexpected interactions between players, fans and more. During a heated game between the LSU Tigers and Iowa Hawkeyes, the game was viewed a record-breaking amount of times as people saw the skill of LSU's shooting guard/small forward Angel Reese against the Hawkeyes' point guard Caitlin Clark. Obviously, tensions were high and a lot was on the line, so why not engage in some taunts?Paying homage to one of the greatest shit-talkers in history, Reese flashed the iconic "You can't see me" gesture popularized by WWE star John Cena on the court directed toward Clark. She also pointed at her vacant ring finger, signaling a perfect place for a championship ring to sit. It was an exhilarating game and ended in a 102-85 win for LSU, also being the most-watched women's basketball game ever recorded, but folks had other things they were focused on.Related | Brittney Griner Speaks Out Following ReleaseWhile taunting and trash talking is nothing new in the world of sports, Reese was targeted for what some deemed as "classless" behavior. The internet exploded with reactions ranging from entertained to downright angry. “@KeithOlbermann shut your dumb ass up leave angel reese alone.” — Keith Olbermann (@Keith Olbermann) 1680473156 “People aren’t mad at Angel Reese for the hand gesture.
They’re mad at her pride.
They’re mad at her calling out the very apparent double standard.
They’re mad at her for not being humble.
Y’all want to treat Black women any type of way but feign shock when we respond.” — Portia J. (@Portia J.) 1680615826 In particular, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy was called out for his aggressive response to the playful incident, going so far as to call Reese a "classless piece of shit." “Classless piece of shit” — Dave Portnoy (@Dave Portnoy) 1680472977 While none of this should be as controversial as it was made out to be, the situation earned the attention of not just the entire internet, but the world of sports and cultural commentary. The glaring double standard of white athletes' behavior compared to Black athletes has been called into question, especially the way in which Reese, a young Black woman, has been labeled as "aggressive" and "rude," racialized terms that have been used to insult women of color. In a piece for Teen Vogue, Leah Goodridge and Olayemi Olurin wrote: "While navigating anti-Blackness in the workplace, we’ve both been told — as many Black professionals have been — to 'play the game.' But the game, which is rigged with limited boxes, stereotypes, and implicit biases beyond our control, is designed for us to lose."Even Clark, who has been celebrated for her spirited on-the-court taunts, has stepped in to defend Reese. "We're all competitive,” the West Des Moines junior guard said in a conversation with ESPN. “We all show our emotions in a different way. Angel is a tremendous, tremendous player. I have nothing but respect for her. I love her game. The way she rebounds the ball, scores the ball is absolutely incredible. I’m a big fan of her and the entire LSU team."Clark further goes on to say, "She should never be criticized for what she did." “So Caitlin Clark does the 'YOU CANT SEE ME' and y'all loved it. Now when Angel Reese does it you call it poor sportsmanship.

Iowa fans: just accept you lost fair and square. Caitlin deserved the tech, Kim Mulkey did nothing wrong. The officiating was fine.

#WFinalFour” — ScottyChrysForever33 (@ScottyChrysForever33) 1680473769 And that's why teamwork makes the dream work! Possible content warnings:
There may be adult content in some of the fanworks.
Some of the gifs, metas, and fanfic may use strong language.
Some of the original creators are problematic (see: JK Rowling, Joss Whedon, Steven Moffat, Gareth Roberts, Rick Berman, etc). I've chosen not to fully disengage from the fandoms, but I don't hold back from posting about some of the crappy things the creators have done/said, and how their biases have affected their work and the fandom.
I try not to post disturbing images or videos, but there will be times that I post descriptions of upsetting events in the past and present that affect marginalized people groups.

Pile of Good Things:
I also post personal photos and notes under the tag #Pile of Good Things. This is my photo journal that helps me with depression, anxiety, and general stress of life. It includes photos from my own life, nothing fancy, I'm no great photographer. It just helps me remember the good moments. There will be pics and mentions of my kiddo (but no full-face shots). So if you find mentions of parenting and children difficult, you may want to block that tag.
I'm not able to do image IDs, but I'm always super happy to reblog versions of posts that others have added IDs to. Feel free to tag me if you write an ID for something I've posted!

Martin Li is an illegal Chinese immigrant from Fujian province who attempted to travel to America to be with his wife. His mode of transportation, the Golden Mountain, was a slave ship operated by the Snakehead gang as a way to sell Fujian captives as overseas slaves in Kenya. During a storm, the ship's crew evacuated, leaving the captives alone to make a break for the New York shores. Li was the only survivor and spent the following years building a large fortune and dedicating himself to helping those less fortunate.[1]
The story is later revealed to be somewhat false, though only the Mister Negative persona appears aware of it. It is revealed that Mister Negative was actually one of the crew members of the Golden Mountain. When the ship nearly crashed onto the New York shores, he stole the identity of one of the deceased Fujian slaves (the real Martin Li) who was heading to America for the aforementioned reasons. This gang member was eventually captured by the Maggia Don Silvermane and experimented on with a synthetic drug created by Maggia chemist Simon Marshall that could be more potent than heroin. He escaped with the help of two other experimental inmates and soon developed two personalities, the kind-hearted Martin Li and the villainous Mister Negative, the latter of the two developing the ability to generate a black electrical energy that could be used to heal, control others, or charge objects with his touch. The Mister Negative side dedicated himself to becoming Chinatown's Kingpin of Crime while the Martin Li side attempts to run the F.E.A.S.T. center with humility.[2]
Martin Li operates a soup kitchen in Chinatown, the F.E.A.S.T. Project (Food, Emergency Aid, Shelter and Training), where Peter Parker's Aunt May volunteers.[3] Neither Peter nor May are aware of Li's dual identity as a Chinatown crime boss under the Mister Negative name.[4] Despite being a crime lord, Li is a seemingly kind and generous man. The F.E.A.S.T. Project has displayed healing powers for people of various illnesses, although the cause of this healing has yet to be revealed.[volume & issue needed]
During the first story of "Brand New Day" storyline, Mister Negative first comes into conflict with Spider-Man when he makes a power play toward taking control of New York's criminal underworld by attempting to wipe out all existing members of the Karnelli and Maggia crime families using a DNA specific bioweapon called the "Devil's Breath". In exchange for leaving the Maggia families' children alive, he takes a sample of Spider-Man's blood to use in a Devil's Breath formula.[3][4][5] Mister Negative later tries to use the Devil's Breath formula to kill Spider-Man during a fight with the Maggia, but Spider-Man is able to hold his breath long enough to escape alive.[6] Spider-Man then recruits the Black Cat to help steal Spider-Man's remaining blood from Mister Negative and replace it with a vial of pig blood so Mister Negative is unaware of his loss.[7]
Martin Li endorses Bill Hollister for mayor of New York City, putting him against Randall Crowne, adding him to a list of opponents (many of whom become targets of the villain Menace). It also causes him to become the target of a smear campaign by Dexter Bennet, editor of The DB and supporter of Crowne.[8] After Menace is revealed to be Hollister's daughter and Hollister resigns as mayor, Li unsuccessfully runs in a special election, losing to J. Jonah Jameson.[9]
Mister Negative later recruits Hammerhead and offers to put the man's brain in a new robotic adamantium skeleton after having been shot point blank in the head by Underworld. Hammerhead agrees to that and Mister Negative has his surgeon Doctor Tramma perform the procedure.[10]
Mister Negative eventually comes across Eddie Brock, giving a job at his soup kitchen. A touch from him causes Brock's cancerous cells to completely disappear. Also, remnants of the Venom Symbiote fused with Brock's white blood cells react with Mister Negative's power, causing Anti-Venom's existence during a conflict with Mac Gargan, the Venom Symbiote's host.[11] After the F.E.A.S.T center is torn apart during the fight between the two, Li discovers from a group of sweatshop workers (from a shop owned by Crowne) that they were experimented on with drugs from Oscorp.[12] Later, Mister Negative and his Inner Demons encounter and battle Anti-Venom. In the aftermath, Brock watches Mister Negative turn into Li, becoming the first to be aware of his dual identity.[13]
During the 2008–2009 "Dark Reign" storyline, Mister Negative refuses to submit to the Hood's rule of conquest of New York's criminal underworld. During a meeting with Hood's henchman White Dragon, Mister Negative corrupts White Dragon and sends the man to attack Hood's headquarters. In retaliation, Hood decides to attack and kill him. H.A.M.M.E.R. seals Chinatown on Hood's behalf and an all out brawl erupts around Li's estate. Hood's gang gets the upper hand until Spider-Man arrives to rescue Martin. However, Spider-Man too is corrupted and sent into battle on Mister Negative's behalf.[1] Spider-Man attacks and pummels the members of Hood's gang who are attacking the villain's headquarters and Mister Negative then sends the web-slinger to kill Betty Brant who is interviewing the real Martin Li's widow and is coming close to the truth. The Hood himself then confronts Mister Negative at his Chinatown headquarters and battles him.[14] During the battle, Mister Negative tries to corrupt Hood but fails. Norman Osborn ends the blockade H.A.M.M.E.R. has on Chinatown when Hammerhead hands papers implicating Oscorp in the aforementioned drug tests on immigrants. An irate Hood decides to kill Mister Negative anyway but he escapes. A later conversation that Osborn has with his own darker Green Goblin side reveals that he now has an alliance with Mister Negative similar to the one with Hood. However, Spot slips in and steals back the evidence of Oscorp's tests, revealing being Mister Negative's mole in the Hood's gang under the promise that he will be cured once they get their revenge on the Maggia.[2]
In the X-Men storyline "Serve and Protect", Mister Negative and his Inner Demons are at San Francisco on attempting to murder a widowed woman who still have a child. When two unidentified heroes, then revealed to be the X-Men Rockslide and Anole in disguise, Mister Negative hired The Serpents, and devise a plan to lure them into their traps, then turning then into his pawn into attacking other X-Men as well. Although his plan foiled by Anole's strategy into using a temporary brainwashed Rockslide, Mister Negative releases the rock mutant hero and vow they will meet again on the other side.[15]
During the 2009 storyline "The Gauntlet", Mister Negative corrupts May Parker when the woman walks in on him punishing an Inner Demon.[16] May manages to break free from Mister Negative's corruption when Peter went to May for moral support after the Lizard devoured Billy Connors and essentially 'killed' Curt Connors.[17]
During the 2010 "Shadowland" storyline, Mister Negative takes the advantage of the conflict against the Hand in a plot to set up a criminal establishment there, only for him and his Inner Demons to run afoul of Spider-Man and Shang-Chi.[18]
Mister Negative later has an encounter with Jackpot and Boomerang.[19] During the "Origin of the Species" storyline, Mister Negative was among the supervillains assembled by Doctor Octopus to secure some items.[20]
During the "Big Time" storyline, Mister Negative is targeted by both Anti-Venom and the new Wraith. When they, along with Spider-Man, interrupt a heroin-smuggling operation, Wraith uses visual recognition software, linked to every television broadcast in New York, to publicly out Mister Negative as Martin Li. When the police approach, Mister Negative and his men retreat. Li is later seen locked in a room by Mister Negative's men who wait for him to change back into their master.[21]
During the 2011 "Spider-Island" storyline, Mister Negative is told of a prophecy that he is destined to be killed by Dagger.[22]
During the 2012 "Avengers vs. X-Men" storyline, Mister Negative and his henchmen invade a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility as a way of taking an advantage of the war between the Avengers and the Phoenix Five, but Hawkeye and Spider-Woman defeat them while having a discussion about their relationship. It is later revealed that they were informed about Mister Negative's plan by Madame Hydra who wanted to get rid of the competition.[23]
During the 2014 "Original Sin" storyline, Mister Negative is seen meeting with the self-proclaimed Goblin King (Phil Urich) who is now leading the Goblin Underground's remnants when it came to them awaiting for Eel II to help divide the criminal underground following the original Goblin King's defeat. Their meeting is crashed by Black Cat and Electro who demand their share of the plan. When Mister Negative and Urich refuse to listen to Black Cat, the woman reminds them that they were all outed by Spider-Man and will succeed in the goal of defeating Spider-Man.[24]
Following the 2015 "Secret Wars" storyline, Martin Li is arrested at some point. He is rescued by Cloak and Dagger who have been corrupted by his touch and are using patches of the drug known as "Shade" to stimulate the effects of Mister Negative's touch and "remain" loyal to him. After the two break Mister Negative out of the prison ship where Li is being held and revert him to his Negative form, he leads an assault on Parker Industries' Japan branch, which leads to a confrontation with Spider-Man, whom Negative manages to touch.[25] Although Peter exhibits an immunity to Negative's corruption power, Negative escapes to his Hong Kong headquarters and reverts to Li. Li later sees a video message from Negative that he is targeting a philanthropist named Shen Quinghao, the former leader of the criminal Snakehead Syndicate which controlled the slave ship where Li became Mister Negative, and makes a proposal to Li, which Li accepts.[26] His plan fails, and after Cloak and Dagger are eventually are freed from Negative's control, they vow to remain in Hong Kong to protect it from Negative's future efforts.[27]
During the "Sins Rising" arc, a revived Sin-Eater steals the powers of Mister Negative and uses it to corrupt the guards at Ravencroft when he targets Norman Osborn. He also uses the powers to corrupt the clone of Ashley Kafka into releasing Juggernaut.[28]
A man claiming to be "Martin Li" shows up at the FEAST building seeking help as the Inner Demons attack.[29] This "Martin Li" later surrenders to the Inner Demons. Mister Negative meets with Mayor Wilson Fisk and informs him that they will need the sister counterpart of the Tablet of Life and Destiny called the Tablet of Death and Entropy. As Mister Negative has the item, he states to Mayor Fisk that their desired function can only be used when both items are together. Mayor Fisk allows Mister Negative to control Chinatown and the Lower East Side. Obtaining the Tablet of Life and Destiny from Spider-Man and Boomerang puts Mister Negative in competion with Black Mariah, a Crime Master, Diamondback, Hammerhead, Madame Masque, Owl, Silvermane, and Tombstone.[

COMIC BOOK REFERENCES & EASTER EGGS - Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)
For me personally, while Spider-Man: Far From Home is a great film, it was made even better by the many Easter eggs and comic book references Jon Watts crammed into it—especially the really obscure ones! The following is a guide to all the ones I’ve spotted along with any deviations from the source material (I will update this as more come to light). Note that owing to the convoluted and complex nature of comic books, I’ve tried to include only the most essential information regarding a character’s history and backstories.
In the comics, Aunt May has worked for F.E.A.S.T. (Food, Emergency Aid, Shelter, and Training), an organization that helps the homeless. This is alluded to in the film, with her cinematic counterpart working at a Salvation Army homeless shelter.
A poster featuring Crusher Hogan and advertising a $100 prize can be seen in the kitchen of the homeless shelter. Crusher Hogan is the wrestler Peter Parker beats in Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962), with $100 being the amount he earns for doing so. And while partially obscured, another name that’s listed could be Bone Saw McGraw, the wrestler Peter fights in the 2002 film Spider-Man.
A Piazza New York Mets flag can be seen in Peter’s room (it was also there in Spider-Man: Homecoming), indicating that he’s a fan, something he has in common with his comic book counterpart. This is revealed in Peter Parker: Spider-Man #33 (2001) in which we find out that Uncle Ben often took a young Peter to see the baseball team play.
Tumblr media
The suitcase Peter uses bears the initials BFP, referring to Benjamin Parker (his middle name has yet to be canonically revealed), Peter’s uncle.
Tumblr media
Ned Leeds and Betty Brant become a couple in the film. In the comics, Ned and Betty also dated each other before marrying in The Amazing Spider-Man #156 (1976). Note that the MCU version of Ned isn’t necessarily meant to be based on Ned Leeds, merely taking his name while being modeled after Ganke.
Two new characters at Peter’s school are derived from the comics. In both media, Mr Del (spelt “Dell” in the film) is a teacher at Peter’s school (he’s specifically a science teacher in the comic books). The cinematic version of Brad Davis competes with Peter for MJ’s attention. In the source material, he was a quarterback at Empire State University who went out on a date with MJ.
Far From Home sees Mysterio pretending to be a hero and tricking the public into believing Spider-Man is a criminal, which is essentially the story told in his debut issue—The Amazing Spider-Man #13 (1964). In the comics, Quentin Beck/Mysterio was a movie special effects artist and stuntman who sought a quick path to fame by trying to frame and kill Spider-Man. Though he doesn’t posses any powers, Beck’s costume contains various weaponry he can employ in combat. Parts of his suit can emit a smokescreen and hallucinogenic gas, which he often uses in tandem with his hologram projectors to disorient his foes. The crystal ball-esque helmet he dons—that he can see out of, but others can’t see into—contains a sonar device that allows him to “see” through the smoke around him. His gloves can dispel a web-dissolving acid, while his cape would electrically shock anyone who touched it.
Tumblr media
In the film, Quentin Beck says he’s from Earth 833, while Peter’s reality is Earth Dimension 616. This follows the multiverse naming convention used in the comics. The mainstream Marvel Universe is known as Earth-616, Earth-833 is where Billy Braddock/Spider-UK comes from, while the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been designated Earth-199999. For those curious, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy takes place in Earth-96283, while Marc Webb’s two Spidey films are set in Earth-120703.
Though not a direct adaption of anything from the source material, the stealth suit Nick Fury gives Peter in the movie was inspired by two costumes from the comics: the black costume worn by Spider-Man Noir and the stealth costume (which has a camouflage mode) Peter develops early on in the “Big Time” (The Amazing Spider-Man #648-656, 2010-11) story arc.
Tumblr media
In the comics, the Elementals are a group of beings that hail from another universe, each of who can control one of the elements. Hellfire has mastery over flames, Hydron can command water, Magnum is able to manipulate earth, and Zephyr has power over air. For the film, however, director Jon Watts decided to amalgamate the concept of the Elementals with some of Spidey’s classic foes.
Tumblr media
The MCU earth Elemental takes some inspiration from Sandman. Flint Marko, having escaped from prison, hides on a beach where nuclear tests are conducted. After a nuclear explosion, he finds his body has taken on the properties of sand.
The water Elemental is based on Hydro-Man. During a battle between Spider-Man and Namor on board the U.S.S. Bulldog, crewman Morris “Morrie” Bench was knocked overboard, falling into the water just as an experimental generator was being tested. The energy from the device combined with underwater volcanic gases granted him the ability to turn his body into water. In the film, Hydro-Man’s origin story from the comics is cited by Flash as a possible explanation for the existence of the water Elemental.
Tumblr media
The lava Elemental resembles Molten Man. Mark Raxton’s skin turned to metal after he’s covered with a liquid metal alloy that was created from substances found inside a meteor. He finds that he now has super strength, possesses skin that is highly resistant to injury, and is also able to generate intense heat, giving his body a molten form.
The air Elemental, meanwhile, could be based on Cyclone. Andre Gerard was an engineer who invented a weapon known as the Cyclone. With NATO not wanting to use his creation, he instead incorporated the technology into a suit that could create high-speed winds around him.
Despite the film not featuring direct adaptations of Sandman, Hydro-Man, Molten Man, and Cyclone, the debut issues of each character are referenced in Far From Home. When Fury and Maria Hill are shooting the earth Elemental the numbers 462 can be seen as part of a car’s number plate (The Amazing Spider-Man #4, 1963; Sandman’s first appearance), Fury’s car in Prague bears the number plate “ASM 28965” (The Amazing Spider-Man #28, 1965, which was published in September; Molten Man’s first appearance), an overturned car on Tower Bridge has “TASM 143” as its plate (The Amazing Spider-Man #143, 1975; Cyclone’s first appearance), and though not in the final cut of film—but present in the trailers—“Asm 212” can be seen on a boat in Venice (The Amazing Spider-Man #212, 1981; Hydro-Man’s first appearance).
Tumblr media
Speaking of number plates, the one on the car Fury drives in Berlin is “MTU 83779,” a reference to Marvel Team-Up #83 published in July 1979. The issue sees Spider-Man and Nick Fury team up against Silver Samurai and Boomerang. In addition to being Cyclone’s debut issue, The Amazing Spider-Man #143 (1975) is also the issue in which Peter and MJ first kiss—hence the “TASM 143” number plate appearing on screen when Peter and MJ kiss in the film. The number plate on Aunt May’s car, unchanged from Homecoming, is “AMF 1562,” a nod to Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962). And lastly, in the post-credits scene we see the number plate of Talos’ car: “HNM 62011.” This is a reference to Hawkeye & Mockingbird #6 (2011) in which a Skrull impersonating Nick Fury is discovered.
Tumblr media
This cinematic incarnation of MJ reveals to Peter that she knows he’s Spider-Man, with her comic book counterpart having done the same in The Amazing Spider-Man #257 (1984).
While the zombie Iron Man we see in the film was merely an illusion, there actually does exist a zombie Iron Man in the comics. This version of the character hails from Earth-2149 where all the Marvel heroes have been turned into zombies.
Tumblr media
Though it is a newspaper in the mainstream comic continuity, The Daily Bugle is a news website in the film. Both iterations, though, have an anti-Spider-Man slant. In the Ultimate Universe, however, the publication did go digital-only, doing so in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #11 (2010). The website in the issue is dailybugle.com; in the film it’s thedailybugle.net.
In the comics, J. Jonah Jameson is the executive editor and publisher of The Daily Bugle. What’s significant about the MCU incarnation of the character is that he’s played by J. K. Simmons, who portrayed the character in Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy!
Tumblr media
Spider-Man’s identity has been revealed in the comics—accidentally or otherwise—to members of the public several times. The MCU has Mysterio do this, but in Civil War #2 (2006) Peter himself willingly does so at a news conference as a way of showing his support of the Superhuman Registration Act.
Tumblr media
And while not exactly a reference to the comic books themselves, in Venice the students stay at Hotel DeMatteis, a nod to J. M. DeMatteis who has written many Spider-Man comics. Additional shout-outs to Spidey writers come in the form of signs that can be seen in the city: Calle Bendiso (Brian Michael Bendis), Calle Slotto (Dan Slott), Calle Sterno (Roger Stern), Calle Michelinio (David Michelinie), and Calle G. Convayo (Gerry Conway).
In terms of references to the wider MCU, the biggest would have to be Tony Stark’s death, which occurred at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Pictures of him, along with Captain America, Black Widow, and Vision can be seen as part of the in memoriam video a student at Midtown School of Science & Technology creates. The disappearance and return of half the universe’s population is referred to as “the blip.” Happy Hogan hands May a large cheque for the homeless shelter signed by Pepper Potts. Videos about the Snap, Wakanda, Hydra, Einstein Rosen Bridges (featuring Erik Selvig), and Iron Man can be seen as part of the in-flight entertainment. Various other heroes are also named-dropped: Thor (who’s offworld), Doctor Strange (who’s unavailable to help Fury), and Captain Marvel (Fury tells Peter to not invoke her name). We find out that Quentin Beck was the one who invented B.A.R.F., and was present backstage at MIT during Stark’s demonstration of it in Captain America: Civil War. William—who we first met in Iron Man—has joined Beck in his revenge against Stark. At one point, Fury mentions the presence of Kree sleeper cells, and that this information was top secret. And in the post-credits scene we find out that Talos and his wife, Soren, have been impersonating Fury and Maria Hill respectively during the course of the film.

A couple things I've noticed lately. 1 is that J turned down marvel for spn. Let's be real here, if that was true J would have talked about that. A lot. Lol. It's more likely that his agent wanted him to go for it or he read for it at some point. Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer him as Hawkeye any day of the week. I don't think he got to the level that he was offered a role. 2, people are saying why can't J be more like Jared during this pandemic because Jared has been quiet on SM. (1/2)
(2/2) Well Jared has Walker lined up, or else he'd be more active and irritating people on here too lol. J needs a job so he needs that sm exposure. That is part of the business. 🤷‍♀️
---------------------------------------------------
yea i also don’t believe he was offered any marvel part tbh, maybe that raccoon voice role?? and jared gorlz/anti gens better hold on to their knickers when walker starts, you know he’s gonna be what jensen is doing now lol

I’ve read some full universe comics that include Scott Free aka Mr. Miracle and the rest of the New Gods (ah, Big Barda, a very unique sort of character for sure). But, never a full book just on him, so, this was fun.
I’m still sort of astounded that Tom King made this both so darn focused (Big Barda and Scott are married) and yet so massively big (there’s a war going on between Apokolips and New Genesis and there’s something called the Anti-Life Equation) at the same time. It was really great. Now, of course, I have to go back and find ALL the other stories that have Mister Miracle (and Big Barda too) in them. Aw shucks….
You may like this book If you Liked: Hawkeye by Matt Fraction, Justice League vs. Suicide Squad by Joshua Williamson, or Wonder Woman by J. Michael Straczynski

for the ask game thing: fma? all questions
I’m always ready to talk about Fullmetal Alchemist. I’m assuming you mean the manga? Either way, thank you for playing this game anon!
(Warning for spoilers.)
1 - What got me into it and what made me like it.
It happened to be one of the few manga series available in Croatian book shops at the time. Reading the first volume was enough to get me hooked. I fell in love with the Elric brothers and alchemy instantly, though funnily enough the other big draw for me was the series’ initial episodic nature. I had no idea what I was getting into, hah.
2 - My favourite aspect of the story.
Just how varied and big it makes its world look, with all these different characters working towards their own goals, how the county of Amestris changed them and how it was changed by them. All is one, one is all.
The themes of atonement and forgiveness are a close second.
3 - My favourite aspect of the technical execution (art, animation, acting, cinematography, prose, gameplay etc).
Listen, I love the mangaka’s art (with impressively varied faces and body types) and the anime adaptation’s animation and music and everything, but my favourite thing are actually the automail designs. They just look badass, I’d give an arm and a leg for them. (Yes, you have permission to kill me.)
4 - My favourite male character.
Picking favourite characters for this series is exceedingly difficult, but at gunpoint I’d probably say Edward Elric. His intelligence, loyalty and dedication to his brother are admirable, as is his overall strong moral code (you could almost say it’s… fullmetal), but he’s also ultimately a kid way in over his head who had to mature a lot over the course of the story. Besides that, he’s just very fun.
5 - My favourite female character.
Again, picking at gunpoint, Riza Hawkeye. I love how she is both a cold, stoic, duty-bound soldier and one of the kindest characters in the series. It’s impressive (and kind of tragic) how well she can put her feelings and issues aside to do what she must. Also, Lt. Hawkaye could shoot me right between the eyes and I’d thank her.
6 - My favourite villain.
This one’s easy, actually: Solf J. Kimblee. He’s a completely unrepentant psychopath who delights in blowing things (and people, especially people) to smithereens, yet despite his love of chaos, he has a strict set of rules that can’t really be called a moral code, but that he nonetheless follows and expects others to do so, too. I loved that scene when he of all people called out Mustang and Hawkeye on not being true to their ideals, or the scene when he praised the Rockbells for sticking to theirs. Also, he just does what he does with such style and applomb that I can’t help but grin like a maniac myself whenever he appears.
7 - A character I hated or was indifferent to that ended up growing on me.
If you’d told me when I first read volume one that I’d be cheering for the cowardly, opportunistic, corrupt Yoki as he rams a car into the strongest homunculus, I would have laughed at you.
8 - A character I think needs more love.
I was going to write an essay on how amazing all the side characters are, but I’ll just give the spotlight to the so-called Truth-kun. We need more theories about this guy.
9 - What I ship.
The basic bitch ships: Ed/Winry and Roy/Riza. Especially the latter, their history and dynamic are very interesting. Of the non-canon ships, I’m surprised more people don’t ship Roy/Jean.
10 - My favourite canon relationships (romantic, familial, platonic, antagonistic, etc).
Welp, I already covered the romantic ones above (except for Izumi and Sig Curtis), so my other favourite relationships are the Elric brothers (familial), Mustang and Hughes (platonic) and King Bradley and Scar (antagonistic).
11 - My favourite group/faction.
Greed 2.0 and his “possessions” (Ling, Ed, Darius and Heinkel). That teamup was a blast and I wish it lasted longer, with the Greed-Ling-Ed virtrolic frienship and the two chimeras saving Ed and joining his side after he saved them and then being roped into working with - sorry, working for the friendly neighbourhood homunculus.
12 - Most iconic scene.
Edward ripping off his jacket and showing off his automail arm is the first image that pops up when I think of the series.
13 - My favourite scene.
The scene in the tunnels beneath Briggs when the clues are pieced together and the transmutation circle spanning the entire country is discovered gave me chills.
14 - My favourite story arc (for serialised works) or favourite act (for self-contained works).
The Briggs arc. It has General Armstrong and her Briggs Bears, it has Kimblee, it has the situation with Winry and Scar, what more could I ask for?
Runners up are the Ishval War Flashback and the events concluding with Mustang’s battle with Lust.
15 - My favourite plot twist.
“Selim Bradley is a homunculus.”
16 - What I’d like to or would have liked to see happen.
Uh. I think more development to the homunculi who weren’t Greed and Wrath would’ve been nice. It’s why I prefer the 2003 anime versions of Lust, Sloth and Envy. Otherwise, I don’t really have any complaints.
17 - An unpopular opinion.
I’ve recently discovereed FMA shipping discourse is a thing now and I am very disappointed. Unless anti-shippers have been asleep for the past 16 years, they should know ships like RoyEd, Elricest and Edvy were and to an extent still are popular and that neither the fans nor the unsuspecting audience picked up problematic views on real life relationships. Imagine that!

Curiosity
A/N: Happy Sunday, everyone! After some technical difficulties trying to post a piece of artwork earlier today, I have removed it until it can be fixed. In the meantime, have this! (Please keep in mind, this story is from very early in my FMA career, so the characterization is a little less polished than usual.)
I do not own FMA.
Curiosity
Fuery watched Lieutenant Hawkeye leaving the room, her right hand carefully massaging the back of her left shoulder. Her expression didn't let on that she was having one of her strange episodes of back pain, but they all knew. Whenever her back was hurting, she talked even less than usual, and her footsteps became more careful and quiet as she tried to keep each step from jarring her spine.
"Colonel?" Fuery looked timidly over at his dark-haired superior. "Is Lieutenant Hawkeye going to be all right?"
Another side effect of the Lieutenant's back pain was that it seemed to cause the Colonel just as much discomfort. He was still staring at the door she'd disappeared through, his face drawn. Even from here, Fuery could tell that he was pensively worrying the inside of his lower lip with his teeth.
"She usually bounces back," Roy answered distractedly. He dropped his gaze back to the papers on his desk, going back to filling them out; another oddity. He wasn't complaining, stalling, starting to drop off . . . . If Fuery didn't know better, he would say that the Colonel was deliberately trying to give the Lieutenant one less thing to worry about by getting his work done.
Something was very strange around this office, and it was only his second week. Fuery wondered if it would be overstepping his limits if he tried to find out what that strange thing was . . . .
The sub-basement of the East City Military Headquarters was a dark, silent place after hours. During the work day, at least, it was a light, silent place; the curators of the archives contained there turned out every light before leaving.
Fuery stood at the top of the steps, seeing his entire plan fall to pieces and drop into the yawning abyss of the night-black stairwell. He had no idea where the light switches were, no flashlight, not so much as a match to see by; he supposed that turning on the lights would only alert guards that someone was somewhere they weren't supposed to be. With a sigh, Fuery turned to leave.
"Psst!"
His head whipped back around at the noise; a flashlight clicked on at the bottom of the stairs, illuminating the face of Jean Havoc. "You're not giving up that easy, are you?" he hissed, grinning.
Hurrying down the stairs, Fuery kept his voice at a whisper. "What are you doing here, sir?"
"You think you're the only one who's curious?" Breda materialized out of the shadows on Fuery's right. "We've known something was up between the Colonel and Lieutenant since we started. You're the first to actually make a move to look into it."
"But . . . how did you know I was going to check it out?" Fuery looked back and forth between the two officers, bewildered. "I didn't say anything!"
"You acted suspiciously following your conversation with the Colonel regarding Lieutenant Hawkeye." Fuery jumped, then spun to find Falman standing behind him. "Given the nature of the topic and the fact that you know exactly where to locate personnel files, we deduced that it was only a matter of time before you attempted to find out just what it is that's going on."
"So you gonna help us find those files, or what?" Havoc pressed, leaning on Fuery's shoulder. "You want to find out what our superiors are up to behind our backs, don't you?"
The youngest member of the so-called 'Mustang Unit' hesitated for only a second before ducking out from under Havoc's arm and taking his flashlight. "Follow me."
The first row of shelves he led them down was labelled at the start with a sign that read 'Personnel Files: K–M.' At the far end, tucked into a box between 'Mullarkey, Ryan' and 'Myre, Colin' was a file with a bright green stamp of the State alchemists' crest and the name 'Mustang, Roy.' Fuery pulled it out and passed it to Breda.
The red-headed man hefted it, letting out a low whistle. "Look at the size of this thing . . . . You'd think he'd been in the military for thirty years . . . ."
Fuery was already heading back the way they'd come . . . and taking the only light with him; the other three hurried to catch up. Up out of the K–M section, and over three rows to the start of the H–J section. Another moment of searching for the right box, then the right file.
"There should be some tables closer to the stairs," Fuery said, turning away again. The flashlight picked out the worn wooden surfaces just metres away, and the little group crossed toward them. Chairs scraped on the floor as they settled in to their snooping.
Roy's file was first. Opening it first revealed a page listing his personal information: full name, date of birth, date of enlistment, height, weight, gender, next of kin and their information. A black-and-white photograph of a younger Roy was paper-clipped to the file. His hair was shorter, and the serious expression seemed out of place on the young face, but the dark eyes were the same.
Havoc leaned close, frowning. "Wait a minute . . . that bar it says that his aunt owns . . . . I've been there before, when I was passing through Central." His eyes widened as he fully grasped the implications. "Damn, I think I hit on my boss's aunt!"
Fuery wasn't listening; he turned past the rest of the military records — fitness reports, psychological evaluations, notices of promotion — to the next section in the file – a copy of Roy's State alchemist's license. The same basic information was given as on the military record, with two differences. Under 'Alias' was written 'Flame Alchemist,' and under 'Alchemical Instructor' was the name 'Berthold Hawkeye.'
". . . . Guys?" He touched a finger to the surname. "You . . . you don't think that . . . ."
All motion ceased for a full three seconds before there was a mad scramble for the file marked with the Lieutenant's name. A cursory glance at the photograph of a young woman with short-cropped blonde hair, and then all four pairs of eyes were skimming down to the next of kin. In the now-Lieutenant's handwriting, the name 'Berthold Hawkeye (father)' was crossed out, as was the word 'none.' It had been replaced by the words 'Lt.-General Grumman (maternal grandfather)' in someone else's script.
Breda stared. "She's related to a General? No wonder she gets promoted faster than other women in the military . . . ."
"I highly doubt the Lieutenant uses her familial connection to rise in the ranks," Falman said. "That would be both unethical and completely outside her character."
"You guys are missing the point!" Fuery exclaimed. "The Lieutenant's father was the Colonel's alchemy teacher. That means they must have known each other when they were younger, right? He joined up when he was eighteen, so he probably started learning alchemy when he was . . . fifteen? Which would make the Lieutenant twelve or thirteen . . . ." He shook his head. "Wow . . . I got the feeling they knew each other, but I thought it was just from Ishval."
"It's a pretty sweet story," Havoc said, smiling slightly. "Two kids grow up together, fight a war together, then end up working together after all that time . . . . No wonder they're able to do that 'secret communication' thing."
Fuery frowned. "Secret communication?"
"You know, that thing they do where they look at each other, and you could swear they're having their own private conversation?" the sandy-blond man shrugged. "They don't do it a lot; I've only seen it once or twice, but I swear that's what happens."
Propping his chin in his hand, Fuery looked down at the two files. Another photograph, sticking out from behind one of Lieutenant Hawkeye's fitness reports caught his attention; he tugged it free . . . and promptly dropped it. "Holy cow!"
The other leaned forward . . . and froze. After a moment, Falman cleared his throat and looked away; Breda's eyes seemed like they were going to pop out of his head. Havoc gave a low whistle.
"I knew the military required photographic evidence of all tattoos . . . never thought she would have one." He slid the picture carefully back under cover. "Normally, they just want to make sure you don't have any anti-military sentiments or symbols . . . . I have no idea what that is."
"It's alchemical in nature, but I don't recognize it," Falman murmured.
Silence descended on the dark room for a moment, before Fuery guiltily closed the file. "We should put these back and go, before the night guards find us down here."
"Master Sergeant, is there a reason why you keep looking at me like that?"
Jolted back to reality, Fuery belatedly dropped his gaze back to his desk, trying – and failing – to force back the blush working its way onto his face. He was glad no one else was in the office this early in the morning, to see his embarrassment. "S-Sorry, Lieutenant. I was just . . . thinking."
A half-amused smile tugged at the corner of Hawkeye's mouth. "And that requires you to stare at me?"
"N-No! I just . . . I mean . . . . I didn't mean to stare at you, sir, I really didn't!" Now completely flustered, Fuery slumped in his chair. "I really am sorry."
"It's all right." Hawkeye tilted her head to one side. "If there's something on your mind, would you like to talk about it?"
Fuery shifted, trying to think of how he could get answers without revealing his not-so-legal snooping. "Well . . . . I was just wondering how you and Colonel Mustang met."
If the question surprised her, it didn't show in her expression. She merely folded her hands on the top of her desk, looking steadily back at him. "As soldiers, we met on the Ishvalan battlefield. However, I knew him from before he enlisted, as my father's alchemy apprentice."
"Really?" Feigning ignorance, Fuery worked at keeping his expression innocent. "So your father is the one who taught him Flame Alchemy?"
That drew a small reaction; a slight twitch of a muscle in her cheek. "No. My father is the man who developed the theories and formula for Flame Alchemy, though he never taught it to the Colonel. He was forced to figure that part out on his own."
Theories . . . formula . . . . And Falman had said that the tattoo on the Lieutenant's back was definitely alchemical in nature. It all fit. Fuery got to his feet. "Thank you for taking the time to speak with me, Lieutenant. If you don't mind, I think I'll go down to the cafeteria and get some coffee."
With a nod of acknowledgement, Hawkeye looked back to her work. "You're welcome, Master Sergeant."
He hurried from the room before she could notice that his mind had kicked into overdrive, moving briskly through the hallways and down two levels to the cafeteria. Right about now, the others should be getting their own coffee before going up to the office; he had to speak to them before they did.
Sure enough, the three others were grouped beside one of the dispensers beside the main serving window, all holding mugs with steam curling above them. Fuery hurried up, completely forgetting to salute his superiors.
"I confirmed it!" he said excitedly, voice barely low enough to avoid eavesdroppers. "Lieutenant Hawkeye's father was the Colonel's alchemy teacher, but he wasn't the one to show him how to use Flame Alchemy. All he did was develop the theories and formula behind it."
Breda frowned. "Meaning the Colonel had to work that out himself?"
Nodding furiously, Fuery leaned closer. "Think about it – the Lieutenant's tattoo looks like a bunch of alchemy, right? What if that tattoo is the formula for Flame Alchemy? Do you realize what that means?"
Havoc's morning cigarette tilted upward in his mouth as he grinned in realization. "It means the Colonel has seen the one thing that over half the guys on base fantasize about . . . . He's seen Lieutenant Hawkeye naked."
"Maybe I have." Four heads whipped around as the man in question walked past, just within hearing range, wearing a grim, knowing smirk. "And if you ever repeat that to anybody, you'll all be little piles of ash before you can even blink."

Guestward Ho! premiered the very same week as The Andy Griffith Show. They were soundstage neighbors on the Desilu-Cahuenga lot and they shared the same theme song composer, Earle Hagen.
Guestward Ho! was another ‘injun sitcom’ with ‘sitcom injuns,’ the most common of racial stereotypes in midcentury comedy. Initially the script by comedy writer Cy Howard was shopped around to several actresses - Jane Russell, Maureen O’Hara, Nanette Fabray - all of whom turned it down.
The sitcom was essentially a western version of Mr. Blandings Builds his Dream House. Vivian Vance, the costar of I Love Lucy, loved the concept. She convinced Desilu to pick up the property as a potential starring vehicle after she retried Ethel Mertz. Desilu purchased the property as Vance suggested - and then cast the much younger Joanne Dru in the part.
Variety considered it a flimsy basis for a comedy: “Story line has a NY couple with a brattish kid coming West to buy a dude ranch. It looks like a bad bargain until the youngster makes up with a young brave and they unpack to stick it out. J. Carroll Naish will figure prominently as the feathered Redman, who would sell out the tribe to make a buck. Naish, an Irishman, now goes from Italian to Cherokee and will be the main cog.”
J. Carrol Naish played the character of Hawkeye, sporting a full head dress, and delivering the anticipated stereotypes. He was a veteran of racial comedy, having started in vaudeville at a time when racial impersonation was still the rage. Naish was known as a dialect actor and it served him well with hundreds of appearances in radio and film. Naish had starred in a television sitcom once before. It was thrown off the air after complaints of racism.
Life with Luigi was a hit radio sitcom in the late 1940s. It was retooled for television in 1952. J. Carroll Naish’s portrayal of the title character was attacked by the Italian Anti-Defamation League as a gross libel. The cancelation of Life with Luigi was announced at the exact same time as the cancelation of that other controversial television sitcom - Amos n’ Andy.
Television columnist Art Cullison wrote, “Life with Luigi, despite high ratings - helped along by the fact that it follows I Love Lucy - may be fading from television soon. There have been too many complaints from viewers, and not all of them Italians, that the show is objectionable. It does tend to perpetuate the Italian stereotype and put such immigrants in a bad light.”
Eight years later in Guestward Ho, J. Carroll Naish was back at it.
However, Native American lobbies didn’t wield the same influence with television networks as did the ADL and NAACP. Perhaps anticipating criticism, the program’s producer insisted Guestward Ho had a progressive point of view. “This country cheated the American Indians and now feels guity about it,” said Cy Howard. “So Hawkeye was created. He is a modern Indian out to cheat the white man. No matter what Hawkeye does to us, it’s funny. You know what I mean?”
Cy Howard had created a hit radio sitcom in the 1940s. It was called Life with Luigi.
