/OUR DEMANDS/ - No Displacement on Stolen Land - Stop the Sweeps / End Bylaw Raids - Homes Not Cops

Week of action begins Friday April 21, with a #StopTheSweeps action in so-called Victoria. More details via @mr.georgejim

/WHY/ #StopTheSweeps Coalition & supporters call for international solidarity in the struggle against colonial state-led displacement. We hope to see multiple cities across Turtle Island show up in care and solidarity with unhoused community members, while continuing to demand an end to inhumane practices of encampment evictions and sweeps.

Actions call on community members to take care of each other in the face of state abandonment. Actions call on all levels of govt to cease ongoing colonial dispossession, to end constant police surveillance and the enforcement of inhumane bylaws in encampments & to immediately respond to the urgent need for safe, autonomous, accessible public housing.

You can begin with material support and a willingness to learn and contribute to #MutualAid. We must show up for those that are criminalized and displaced by our cities.

/BACKGROUND/ Hastings Tent City in the #DTES of so-called Vancouver, has been a site of unhoused community and solidarity the past year in the face of ongoing state-led displacement.

On April 5 & 6, Hastings Tent City was raided by an occupying army of the #VPD & and city workers. Police-led decampment shut down multiple city blocks, restricted access to essential health services, and systematically stole homes and belongings.

The city has not offered dignified housing for those they are evicting, and admits that there is not even adequate shelter space. In the weeks since, the city and cops have continued to wage war on the poor and attempted to “reset behaviour” through daily intimidation & militarized sweeps.

calling the cops on someone else in america for drug use is the most comically evil action i can think of that you can still admit to in public and (unfortunately) not be shunned/exiled/physically attacked for. you're very explicitly saying that your sheltered discomfort with seeing someone do drugs is worth ruining that person's entire life over (even though you could get the same effect by just continuing to walk past the drug user until you never see them again). 18th century dauphin mindset. I think another clear theme of Spiderverse is that, as we’re told in the first movie, anyone can be Spider-Man. But in the second movie, Miguel tells us that Spider-Man has rules. Certain things have to happen, certain people have to die, certain people aren’t meant to be Spider-Man. And the message there is that, once someone makes those kinds of rules, you run. Because it’s just not true. Anyone, literally anyone, can be Spider-Man. There is no requirement. We’ve been shown you don’t even need to be bitten by a spider!

And with the amount of people comparing Spiderverse to the queer experience, this is especially important. There are no rules to being queer. There are no labels that are exclusive. There are no labels that are even required. As soon as someone says you can’t be queer in a certain way, or certain identities don’t ‘count’ for whatever reason, you need to run. They are liars. There are no rules, and there never have been. You are queer because you said so, and this is your decision alone.

If you decide you’re Spider-Man, then you’re Spider-Man. And if you decide you’re going to save everyone you can, then you will. It’s as simple as that.

demand to see a warrant. if they stop you on the street, ask if you're being detained and if so, why. do not speak to cops without your attorney present. that is WHY miranda rights exist. you are ALLOWED to keep your mouth shut.

*ALL of this is stuff that will be more dangerous to do if you are black or brown or visibly trans or queer or disabled. if at ANY POINT you feel that you are going to be at risk of harm for doing these things, you are NOT at fault for complying. your rights are important but they are not more important than preserving your life. stay safe out there y'all.

As much as a love Kim, I also think there’s just something so important about Cuno discovering the phasmid with Harry.

The angry little boy who steals away locusts and houses them with the same well meaning (albeit rudimentary) care he extended to Cunoesse. (She too, is a skittish, biting thing far away from home). “Locust City” is such a prime example of the thin line children like him toe between grasping for any opportunity to exert control over the little things they can grasp hold of and the arguably innate comfort found in providing care and comfort to others. The locusts are trapped with him as much as they were in the phasmid traps. As much as Cuno is trapped in Martinaise, in his father’s tiny apartment, in the infuriating prison of adolescence. He can’t control what happens to him. The locusts can’t control what he does to them. Cuno saves them from bait traps and builds them a mud city sheltered out of the cold. He houses his not quite sister, not quite friend and gives her a name when she has none. Cuno’s father terrifies and enrages him in ways he doesnt have the introspection to express properly. So he throws stones at a bloated corpse and tries his best to build a safe haven amongst the trash of that shack and screams awful things at people who dont even spare him a glance anymore.

And then he watches a man only a stumble away from becoming the same angry drunk that sleeps in his father’s bed reach out toward the most terrifying insect he’s ever seen like it’s something beautiful. Something worth paying attention to. A lone creature thats seen so much of the world and still loves living within it anyway. People cared about the phasmid before they even knew it truly existed. Cuno exists too. Why doesn’t anyone care?

Canonically his dad is a cop and there are a couple jokes about his parents not loving him, dudes dad straight up said "actually, do we love you?" Like sir damn anyways im taking that and running with it SO

Giving him a fucked up situation of him and his dad always butting heads and both of them escalating things constantly, and as he got older the ends to the arguments went from getting grounded or punished to getting kicked out or Duncan just leaving, probably escalating to his dad kicking him out semi regularly and eventually his mom or dad telling him to come back home to make a kinda fucked up cycle

And like i know they gave the convict kid a cop dad for the laugh like its not that deep at ALL

but like that sets up sucha fucked power dynamic and i want to use that

and we never find out what got Duncan sent to juvie for the first time, its said off screen while some characters are spilling embarrassing or dark secrets and in my fucked up world either he accumulated a couple charges while he was kicked out, indirectly the fault of his dad

In the end, they always lose more than they gained. What they don’t know is this unfortunate occurrence happens with any Mora dealings with the man. But what can you expect for someone that, by contract, has the Traveler liable for all expenses during his outings with them? It's simply best to leave all matters of mora out of any relationships with him.

With your heart - If there's one thing true about Zhongli, it's that, while he may withhold the truth, he does not lie. So when he speaks of a person warmly, they can very well believe his words to be true. That being said, it is important that one does not mistaken his warmth with depth. One cannot simply entrust their heart to him and expect his in return. How could anyone hope to understand the weight of many a millennia, after all? So while the desire may be cute, it'll never be something he would even consider to reciprocate.

Non-Bullshit Self-Affirmation Exercise

I'm nobody's therapist and I shouldn't be. But the world we're in is mentally damaging. Any world would be to some extent, and I understand different people have different experiences of the world. But whoever you are I think we can agree most environments we're in don't promote a good relationship with 'the self.'

I can't say 'you should like who you are' or 'you should think you have all these great virtues.' That isn't up to me. But whether you already 'like yourself' or 'are building yourself' or 'want to like a future self more' you can't do that easily if 'who you currently are' is passively eroded without relief.

And this can happen a lot of ways I think. Our responsibilities (school, job, etc.) don't value our authentic experiences but instead our 'performance' within a system. Our bodily needs and logistical realities can frame the practical steps to our care like a burden for ourselves or for others. We are constantly assaulted with external appeals to desire that disrespect our own effort to navigate those desires ourselves. And so much stuff can feel 'more important than ourselves' like, why is it relevant you're a person when immense choices jeopardize the future and the lives of collective humanity???

A lot of talk about 'self-care' is bastardized into like... 'giving yourself special treats' which often can tie in to a highly consumerist culture or self-destructive habits. And 'special treats' may feel irresponsible or like a waste of time in the face of our practical human problems. But the important part is not actually the 'treat', but that the context of the treat is yours. This is YOUR unique treat, that represents you, showing up for you.

And looking at yourself can feel embarrassing. But it's not a coincidence that the 'least cringe' position, least vulnerable position, is to erase yourself. But you're not superficial. And stating 'yourself' is not egotistical. It's the foundation for everything else that matters, and could matter about you to another person.

So like. Some self-affirmations. Not the type that's like, "I'm brave, I'm smart, I'm good, I'm worthy, I'm flexible," etc. I mean:

My favorite color is...

My favorite food is...

I remember a time when I felt, 'wow'...

When I speak, I am [loud, soft, wordy, brief, etc.]...

I am interested in...

People who are [X] inspire me...

I wish I was more...

I wish I was less...

When people meet me, I want them to feel...

My favorite animal is...

I like to spend a free afternoon doing...

I like my spaces to be...

The smell of [x] reminds me of...

When I daydream, the story is usually this type...

I think about these on-purpose maybe once a week.

Affirmations like these may seem childish, basic, frivolous compared to building 'successful habits' and routines. And those are useful, but they can only keep you moving forward through a harsh environment; relying fully on 'discipline' to carry on will put you on paths where an external default is affirmed and your authenticity will be overwritten.

Whether you are trying to become more confident, or trying to work on your self awareness, trying to 'hang in there,' trying to reconcile who you have to be at different parts of your life, trying to unblock your creativity, or if you're entering a new part of your life... even if you think you have yourself all figured out, I believe purposefully sitting down to think about these things will help you.
