Eddie lives, but is hurt and has to lie low. Steve is the only one who has graduated, with his own car, so he takes care of Eddie. Eddie doesn’t necessarily need a hospital, but he is hurt, wants pain meds, and he knows where to get them.

When Wayne found Chrissy’s body he didn’t believe Eddie hurt her, not for a second, but he’s no fool: Wayne hid all of Eddie’s drugs and cash before he called the cops.

Eddie sends Steve to go to Wayne, tells him what to say so Wayne will know he can trust Steve. Wayne is relieved and grateful to know Eddie is alive and safe, even if he’s hurt. He knows better than to go to Eddie, wouldn’t want to lead the cops there. Wayne gives Steve the drugs and the cash, and tells him to do anything necessary to keep Eddie in hiding.

Eventually Hopper comes back, and the assurances of mysterious government types who will clear his name…eventually. But in the meantime Eddie needs to stay hidden.

It doesn’t take long for Eddie to get bored enough to start taking the fun drugs, and Steve’s only human (and only 19). Eddie can hardly sell the drugs now, even if his name is cleared he still has the whole town out for his blood, he might as well enjoy himself.

They get high in various combinations, although never ever with the kids around, occasionally incurring the wrath of Nancy and Robin who figure out what’s going on. The girls smoke weed with them, but nothing harder, and the boys lie and say there aren’t any more pills/acid/whatever.

They smooch often in this scenario, if it’s not already clear, and it’s not angst-filled except for the occasional drug-inspired confession or breakthrough. They run out of drugs eventually, Eddie didn’t have that much, and by the time Eddie’s name is clear he’s also mostly sober (except for weed-could you even imagine him stopping?)
