Note
Do you have one where the serving staff/guards know of Merlin’s magic, but they choose to keep it a secret because he helps them out a lot (since he cheats when no one is looking, they leave him alone for bigger tasks so they can just get things done faster)? (And that the atmosphere somehow just got…better when he started working there, even if the King is still a murder-bitch?)
Like Merlin, doesn’t know that they know. Nobles and visitors aren’t allowed to know and the staff help shield him/explain it away.
(Headcanon Masterlist) (Full Masterlist)
OK SO!!!
I'm gonna write this as a set of  rough headcanons as opposed to a fic, because I'm really struggling motivation wise at the moment, and this particular ask really spoke to me when I looked through my messages :D
It takes Gwen and George (as important, smart, and the-only-other-servants-whose-names-we-know) all of a week to figure out Merlin has magic. It takes the Cook two, it takes the Housekeeper a month and a half, and it takes the Steward just shy of six months. Yeah. Merlin isn't very good at being subtle. The former First Knight, Leon's grumpy, stick-in-the-mud-and-also-up-his-arse predecessor, never finds out (much to the effort of everyone), but Leon of course has it all lined up in his head an hour after he takes over the role. He'd suspected before then, but hadn't really had much to do with Merlin anyway until he'd taken on the job.
Anyway. All of this just means that Merlin has no idea how easy his life is in comparison to what it could have been if he's actually managed to keep his secret, well, secret.
Most of the knights don't know, but a few do. With the guards, it's the other way round. Most of them know, a few specific ones don't. Look, as much as a lot of people know, and it sounds like chaos, it's actually very well controlled. Well, it isn't at first. Merlin is very lucky that the first few people to find out are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, because it's those first few that carefully control where and when the secret goes.
ANYWAY. And I actually mean it this time. A lot of people know and Merlin has NO fucking clue.
The whole thing goes unsaid, and bar a few of the main crew (the aforementioned Gwen, George, Cook, Housekeeper, Steward, and later on, Leon) no one knows exactly who else knows. So there's a lot of awkward shuffling and suspecting side eyes as they try and tiptoe around it all. None of the guards that don't know are EVER put to duty outside Arthur's chambers, and they're kept away from places Merlin frequents as much as possible (the armoury, the stables, the physician's chambers, the washer rooms, etc) just because Merlin has no spatial awareness and never realises when there’s a guard right next to him/just around the corner.
Oddly enough, other than Leon and Lancelot, none of the main knights are in the know, with everyone’s reasoning being that... they’re the most loyal to The King. And as much as Leon and Gwen can vouch for them, they don’t like actively telling people about the magic, they just... corral people if they find out accidentally. Lancelot, despite knowing about the magic, also has no idea about this whole thing, but everyone else knows that he knows. It’s stupid. It’s complicated. But Gwen, Leon, and George are in too deep now to backtrack so... they just carry on going.
So yeah. They cover for him all the time. At any given night there will be at least one knight or guard in the tavern, so whenever Arthur kicks up a fuss about how “Merlin can’t have been at the tavern again.” they’ll start spreading rumours about how whip smart Merlin is at poker, because he won against Halbrand, Remus, Gregor, and Flint last night. When they know Merlin has snuck out to deal with something, they’ll make sure someone in-the-know is posted on the outer city walls, so they can send word when Merlin is sneaking back in. This just means they can clear the main courtyard and route to the Physician’s Chambers of anyone so that Merlin can still think no one noticed him coming and going.
After a few years, people notice that there are two days a year, later on three, that Merlin does actually disappear to the tavern for. It took Leon a little while to figure out, and he still isn’t entirely sure he’s right, but the first one falls on the day that Merlin had to leave Camelot to protect his home from ransackers. Gwen had mentioned one of his friends had died, and the word is spread to make sure Merlin is left alone that day. The second... he isn’t sure, to be honest. He knows it falls around the week that the beast had appeared, bought by the bounty hunter, but he’s not sure if that’s relevant. He thinks maybe the beast must have killed one of Merlin’s friends, and again, the word is spread. The third is easy. The third falls around the day the dragon had attacked. Leon himself, as well as many of the knights and guards, head tot eh tavern that week. He finds it odd though, that Merlin seems to separate himself from the memorials, from the drinking songs, from those that gather in mourning, almost like he’s mourning something else entirely. But again, Leon doesn’t question it, and the word is spread.
When he’s noticeably injured, Gwen, George, the Housekeeper, and the Steward will randomly have free days/extra servants available to help out, to lessen his workload. When he’s exhausted, the Steward and Leon will reorganise things so Arthur doesn’t have anything important on in the morning, and Merlin can sleep in. I guess it’s just lots of stuff like that, small things, that Merlin could probably live without but... well, these people love and respect him so much, why would they leave him to suffer alone?? It’s not just the fact that Merlin protects the Kingdom with magic, after all, it’s the fact that he’s so lovely, to everyone. He helps treat the guards’/knights’ injuries without judgment, he’ll cover for people when they’re sick, he’ll do other people’s workloads just to be kind. So yeah, they look after him. Not just because he’s a vigilante or whatever, but because he’s Merlin.
I just... they look out for him, ya know?? And maybe he finds out, in which case he’s very embarrassed that so many people knew about it. Or maybe he doesn’t know, maybe he never knows, and all those people continue to protect him from behind the scenes, the same way he protects Camelot. Who knows.
~
I hope you enjoyed this, anon! I love you all so much, thank you for being patient with me!!!

If you want to make sure you never miss a FF rec, or would like to participate and share your own favourites; join us on the Discord TheMerlinLibrary! Happy reading!
About the FF round-up lists:
Recs are listed in the order they were posted on the Discord; the order does not imply any sort of ranking.
The pairing given in this list is the main pairing of each respective fic – please read the tags for any possible minor or side-pairings, as well as any potential warnings or triggers.
Pairings and Eras are given as tagged in each respective fic. (?) signifies that the tags were unclear and I do not know enough about the fic to fill the gaps.
Round-ups are compiled on the weekend of the week after the respective theme of the post (when the new theme has already been anounced), to avoid omitting potentially belated FF recs.
The weekly round-up is not a guarantee! I'm running this alone, so it can only be posted for weeks when I have enough time on my hands to compile a list. If you'd like to help out, feel free to contact me on Tumblr ( @zaharya ) or Discord. Thanks to @ravenwilds for helping me out with these round-ups, and to Chel for making a whole-ass bot to make it easier!

somehow some time magic goes wrong and young arthurs from different points in time are pulled into king arthur era. everyone kinda has this back and forth of who is going to watch the literal 8 month old. gwen and lancelot are pretty good at taking care of him, so is percival but he doesnt seem comfortable with it so no one forces him. elyan tried to hold him but baby!arthur started wailing after three seconds. leon is sorta good but he has like no idea how babies work or what they need so when baby!arthur found his sword and almost lobbed his own head off, leon was forbidden from taking care of the child. gaius is too old and busy researching how to reverse the issue. who the HELL would trust gwaine with a child? arthur has this Odd aversion to the child but no one pushes him on it. ofc merlin, magic incarnate, has this like aura or energy that draws all these innocent woodland creatures to him so obviously little arthur is also drawn to him. in fact, merlin seems to be the person he likes the most. and merlins a natural w kids apparently so hes often the one that baby!arthur is handed off to.
he complains about it at first but when baby!arthur breaks into a fit of giggles after merlin calls adult!arthur a clotpole, he has merlin wrapped around his little finger. merlin stops complaining but does let arthur know that the one thing he Will Not Do is change his diaper. arthur laughs and walks away. merlin talks to baby!arthur like they’ve been friends for years (bc they have). arthur points out that baby!arthur cant understand him and merlin retorts that its like how it normally is. merlin gets to perform magic in front of baby!arthur and he LOVES it
my point to this was merlin dotting on little versions of arthur is a way that no one ever really did for him growing up and adult!arthur seeing it and healing little pieces of his inner child as he watches merlin play games with baby!arthur and make sure he’s taken care of. it especially hits him when gaius finally finds a way to send baby!arthur back and while everyone seems torn between upset they have to say bye, they’re also relieved to get the baby back where hes supposed to be,, merlin is like choking back fat tears. everyone backs off to give them privacy and merlin just kisses baby!arthur’s forehead and whispers some encouraging and heartachingly sincere words that have adult!arthur choking back tears.
then BOOM the spell also backfires and while yes baby!arthur got back to where hes supposed to be, now theres toddler!arthur. he has this gravitational pull to gaius (can recognize him) and merlin (magic soulmates ofc he has an innate trust in the man). merlin is happy to have his little friend back and gaius goes back to the drawing board. now they have this little 2-3 year old toddling after them and blabbering something that sounds like english if you’re patient enough
(merlin makes another comment about how little arthur has changed over the years)
the cycle repeats, merlin and toddler!arthur get attached and adult!arthur watches and heals a bit more of his inner child. gaius finds another cure that falls through the same way and now they have child!arthur. he has a bit more of uther’s influence in him but hes still a child. he gets hurt and tries to fight back tears but merlin sees he’s in pain and tells him it’s okay to be hurt, to feel pain, to cry. child!arthur says in that stutter cry children do when they’re fighting back tears that his father says boys shouldn’t cry. merlin wipes a tear that slips down child!arthur’s face and whispers about how he cries and lets himself feel his sadness before picking himself back up and dusting himself off before getting back to it, that it doesn’t make him weak but stronger. adult!arthur hears this and this may not be the beginning of his deconstruction but it makes a tremendous amount of progress in him rewiring his brain away from his father’s toxic ways of thinking.
idk if they’d get a teen!arthur since gaius probably would’ve learned his lesson by then but if they did, we’d get to watch Merlin vs Arthur Showdown 2.0 as merlin humbles the young prince and i think that’d be funny. especially for gwaine since he didn’t get to see it happen the first time.

Wow that last story was amazing. You perfectly balanced how bone-chillingly awful Merlin's story was with the calm tone he told it in. I can't ask you to write more since it ended perfectly and, frankly, I'm guessing that took a lot to write. Still, I could easily imagine many more scenes after this with the knights helping Merlin through this as he slowly realized the monster his mother was to him. Them helping Merlin with nightmares, Gwen and Morgana learning about this, GAIUS learning about it. Merlin bursting into tears one night when, while lost in thought, all of the pieces fell into place and the realization hurt too much to bare. There is so much potential here. Thank you so much for writing this.
(Referencing This Fic)
Ah I'm glad you liked it!!! It wasn't too difficult to write, truth be told, I've always had an easy eye for angst and pain somehow, something my old English teachers worried about lol😅
And you’re totally right!! Everyone is SO ridiculously protective over him, especially when he’s still kind of... unsure?? About how bad it was?? About whether or not he deserved what happened to him? They don’t stop him visiting his mother, but they refuse to let him go alone, and Merlin has to fight tooth and nail to make Arthur stay behind when important things are going on with the Kingdom (that, of course, just means Merlin has an escort of four knights and Morgana, instead of just Arthur. The King has never fussed more than when Merlin comes back from these rare, Arthur-free trips to Ealdor). Though I feel eventually, when Merlin comes to terms more with the fact that, yes, his mother was desperate and trying her best, she was also overly angry and ignoring other options in favour of hurting him, he cuts back on visits. A small part of him always feels guilty for not wanting to see his mum as often as before, but the others, after figuring out that they’ll never be able to persuade him that she deserves a lot worse, learn to distract him with campfire trips and group dinners and days by the lake, when it gets too bad.
It’s often that the others see Morgana angry or petulant over something, which is why they’re all so confused when she’s so calm and collected when they tell her. She’s only met Hunith once or twice, maybe her magic thought she was iffy, maybe it didn’t, either way, she sits stock still and barely reacts, bar the odd raised eyebrow, when they tell her in great detail what Merlin had told them. At the end, there is a quiet “Thank you for informing gentlemen, if you’ll excuse me.” before she goes to find Merlin, give him an unexplained hug, and tell him that they’re going into the woods to muck around with their magic for a while. She’s absolutely FUMING, of course, but she also knows there’s nothing she can do about it (except disallow herself to ever seen that woman again, in fear she might kill her on the spot), so she just doubles up on her protectiveness of Merlin; he eventually cottons on “They told you, didn’t they? About my mother?” she’ll reply with a curt nod and a “They did. And if I ever see that foul woman she’ll know exactly what I think of her, but it’s something that is neither helpful nor necessary for you to hear. I’m your friend, and I adore you, and that’s all that really matters. Will you help me try that spell again?” and Merlin has never been more grateful for her.
Gwen is the opposite; they expect her to cry and crumble and latch on to Merlin and never let go. What she actually does is rage so viciously, whoever tells her genuinely fears for their own lives, as well as the structural integrity of the entirety of Ealdor when she almost picks up a torch and marches out of the room. She is absolutely insane with anger, for a good few hours, and Merlin is probably the only one that can calm her down, after someone regretfully goes to get him (they hadn’t wanted to involve him, but Gwen had looked this close to smacking the shit out of whoever next put a hand on her shoulder and told her to calm down). After everyone bar Merlin leaves the room she quickly calms and turns gentle and caring and soft. She feels very guilty when she realises that her anger had put Merlin a little on edge, so that rage never happens again (though she is VERY blunt and curt with Hunith, if the others ever allow her to go to Ealdor again), but the others all become slightly frightened of her, in good nature, because they thought they knew what Gwen looked like angry before this. They were all of them, very, very wrong.
And Gaius. Oh my God, he never forgives himself, and he never forgives Hunith. That’s his little sister, that did those things to his boy, despite the fact that it all happened long before Merlin was his, and despite the fact the Merlin was hers long before he was Gaius’. Of them all, I think he’s the angriest, even above Gwen and Arthur, because though Arthur and Gwen see Merlin as their equal/friend/partner later on for Arthur, Gaius still sees Merlin as his kid, his son, and therefor as more of a child than he really is. He goes very quiet when he finds out (probably from the gang, with Merlin nowhere in sight, maybe being distracted by Gwen and Morgana or something), and at the end of the story he excuses himself and no one sees him for like two days, and then he reappears, as normal as he always is, except he’s far more affectionate and protective of Merlin. He gives hugs far more freely, lowers his workload, asks after his health/feelings more, is just generally more caring. Merlin definitely notices, and Gaius sits him down and they have a long chat about how Hunith should NEVER have treated him like that, and that Merlin needs to know that Gaius will never raise a hand against him, will never burn him or tie him or make him do anything he doesn’t want to ever. They cry some more, and I reckon Merlin understands better why what happened was so wrong when it comes from Gaius, because Gaius is his other parental figure, so he’d know.
For sure, they help with nightmares. He’s always had nightmares, but rarely about his mother directly? If that makes sense? More about the things she did to him, except in the nightmares Hunith herself is kind of irrelevant, or like the one benevolent force in the background that he can’t quite reach even though it’s her causing the pain. After it all comes out, and Merlin realises how terrible it all truly was, the nightmares focus more on his mother, and it’s her he’s scared of, as opposed to being drowned or burnt or tied or hit or buried alive. He spends a LOT of nights squeezed into Gwen’s bed, or one of the knights’, or later on, but for longer, Arthur’s, when he can’t get back to sleep after a particularly vicious one.
There’s definitely a potential for more scar reveals as well, I suppose, along his shoulders and down his back and Gaius like... curses himself for not noticing sooner, that Merlin had a glamour over basically his whole torso, down his arms, onto his hands.
And yeah, I feel like the realisation is slow, at first, lots of gentle tears every now and then when he’s just remembering the individual instances of pain and fear, but it takes him a while to be able to see the bigger picture. Maybe when there’s some sort of court case about extreme child abuse?? And Merlin is absolutely furious at this guy’s excuse of “I did it because I love my son and he needed to learn and I wanted to keep him safe and blah blah blah.” because even when he sounds genuine, he looks like he’s trying to save himself more than he looks like he’s telling the truth. It’s like three days after he’s found guilty and whipped before being banished from the kingdom that Merlin shows up in Arthur’s chambers in the middle of the night, completely distraught. It takes Arthur all of half a second to put it together because everyone has been nervously keeping their eyes on Merlin since the trial began, knowing that some sort of realisation was more than likely coming.
ANYWAY!!! It continues to be pretty angsty for a while, and Merlin does get angry at people acting like he’ll break if they so much as look at him, but at the end of the day, everyone’s better off for the truth coming out, and Merlin actually gets to heal instead of pushing it all down.
~
WHEW!!! I hope that’s what you were after, Bard😅, I’ll be cheeky and add this to the Masterlist, just because it’s got a fair amount of detail in it :D

Look how small she looks in his arms. How sad, her small reluctant smile. The warm colors with music. How she looks so much like a kid here. Because she is! She’s literally just a kid!
