migrating blog to another location
migrating blog to another location
Hello, it’s been fun here on WordPress but I am moving the blog to simpler pastures – please follow this blog there: https://epifany.substack.com/ I found that all of the ‘Follows’ on WordPress don’t have emails associated so I cannot bring you myself unfortunately, but at least the work has been mostly and easily preserved there. Who knows what will come next, more ether into the ether, and…

Language immersion is for hobbyists
Language immersion is for hobbyists
I will have to preface this post by saying that this a diary entry from the future to myself 3 years ago, if I could travel back in time. That is when I decided that I would live in Japan, provided no unforeseen and pertinent black swans of course. At the same time, this post is intended to nudge or hopefully help anyone that is looking for shortcuts to learn a language, or perhaps learn other…

Adapting to change: anticipating the new steady state
Adapting to change: anticipating the new steady state
Remember those portfolios that I had worked out? Well, I sold most of mine off. Portfolio shmortfolio. I am too active.
As I write this, gold and silver had just made fresh highs and are finally pulling back today, but I’m also watching retro up-scaled videos of Tokyo, New York and Paris(I finished buying into this minor pullback). Besides the simple life, that I had appreciated as recently as…

Do minimalists raise children?
Do minimalists raise children?
Name any minimalist.
Give up?
Jesus Christ. Gandhi. And more recently, PewDiePie? (I have recently come across PewDiePie again – devoured some of his videos will share my thoughts in a future post!)
In the last couple of years, at least, we have seen a surge in self-proclaimed minimalists. From unknown person X to unknown person Z (including me). I think that it peaked for me when I saw…

The Virus has gone Viral
When I lived in South Korea 13 years ago, I recall being worried about North Korea. Community sirens would sound during North Korean missile tests. The worry occurred at about the same time every year: during the joint United States – South Korea military exercise in April. The South Koreans that I spoke to seemed to think that the North Koreans were still their family, and eventually they would…

Feeling Fearful
I made a solid return trading HCA, a healthcare company, in past weeks. I keep returning to it partially because of the natural value play with the pandemic going around, but also to try and review my successful trade. This name is forming a pullback right now, but I saw other names with pullbacks too. So I went and created an Absolute Change indicator to locate the biggest movers in the S&P…

Moving forward with the cherry blossoms
Moving forward with the cherry blossoms
I believe that I could write a book on how not to learn a language, but I am still gathering primary research.
The viral coronavirus has caused the cancellation of many things including school, the Cherry Blossom festival, and my Japanese class. Nevertheless, this virus won’t stop the cherry blossoms from blossoming next week.
My Japanese studies must also go on. After casually reading my…

VIRUS! And other updates.
VIRUS! And other updates.
Tumblr media
Coming back from Christmas vacation after New Year’s, I went back to work. While there, I occasionally checked on the top news stories.
Part of it was the plague of the enticing American Presidential Election with the campaign spanning a year or more. Yes, there are still 8 months left to go! But being in Japan, Carlos Ghosn…

A New Year
My goals hold true through the last few years but perhaps just reordered in priority over time:
Sustain/improve family happiness
Sustain/improve health
Obtain Financial Freedom
Achieve Japanese fluency
Living abroad and in a good spot, I take most opportunities to see family on both sides for BBQs and Christmas/New Year’s. Aside from these events I make a point to contact or call one family…

Trading Insults
Be careful of what you say and do to others. Here are a few quick stories from different times and places involving people. Each gave me a jolt of surprise, followed by reflection, and compassion, then further chuckling.
I was once using a bar of soap to wash my hands and the bar didn’t lather well and had a strange consistency. I said something along the lines of
“This soap is garbage.”
To…

Are you sitting down?
J-Pop member (Arashi) and actor Kazunari Ninomiya’s marriage announcement has been posted on NHK World’s Top Stories. Don’t worry, I had never heard of him either.
The first hit on a quick search is a compilation of his kiss scenes.
I have only heard of this person from this announcement today. Also, I was made aware that some women were likely to be so upset about the…

Clog the drain
Name your favourite telecommunications company.
Congratulations if you were able to name one. Have a cookie.
How much is your phone bill?
I have been late to the game on many things, cell phones being one of them. I got my first cell phone, and also driver’s license, more than 3 years after most of my age cohort had gotten theirs. It was a feature phone with maybe 100 minutes of phone calls,…

Pieces of rubber are grinding away on the road
Pieces of rubber are grinding away on the road
Are you sitting down?
As a follow-up (as my friend abbreviates: ‘F/U’) to my post Where the Rubber Meets the Road, I am sharing my snail-paced progress on creating those retirement accounts.
With today’s technology you’d think that opening an account would be as easy as 1-2-3 but it is as difficult as 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-4-5-6-7-8-8-8-9-10.
Portfolio, shmortfolio.
It has been 4 months since I learned…

The more you buy, the more you save!
The more you buy, the more you save!
Before we feel the full effects of suffocating inflation, I felt that I would reinforce a final word to us foreigners in Japan to emphasize this last opportunity for the soon-to-be foregone 8% consumption tax.
That’s right, ‘save’ 2% when you buy nearly anything in the next 72 hours before Black Tuesday, October 1st, 2019, when the consumption tax is raised to 10%.
Eat out at a restaurant, buy…

Top 1,000,033 things to block, delete, skip and ignore
Top 1,000,033 things to block, delete, skip and ignore
It is tough not to vent and complain here about the world, the internet, politics, etc. Thus, a constant reminder is needed: focus on what you can control, or you’ll go crazy.
That includes the information that you consume everyday. Are you drinking from a single, polluted tap? In this moment I liken it to separate hot and cold faucetsthat I have experienced in Montreal, and possibly Paris: they…
