I'd never read the Iliad before and was only vaguely familiar with a tiny bit of Greek mythology--the only thing I knew before reading TSOA was that Achilles was going to die before the end of the Trojan War. That's it, that's all I knew about Achilles and Patroclus' fates.

I THOUGHT THE LINE WAS FUNNY. SWEET. AN EXCUSE TO EXTEND THE TIME BEFORE THE PROPHECY CAME TRUE. I SMILED EVERY TIME IT CAME UP CAUSE IT WAS LIKE A CUTE LITTLE INSIDE JOKE BETWEEN THEM. FUCK

Kind of like in the middle of some of those last three chapters that focus mostly on Achilles' grief, sometime when I had to pause to process it for a seconds, I remembered the line and shit I'm not even exaggerating when I say it felt like a punch to the gut, only made worse because I always already crying so hard by then. I HATE FORESHADOWING AND I HATE THIS BEAUTIFUL DEPRESSING INCREDIBLY WELL WRITTEN BOOK

obviously we as the audience know that Hector’s death after killing Patroclus by Achilles hands leads to Achilles’s own death, that’s what makes the line; “what has Hector ever done to me?” So fucking beautiful and hurt so much,

but, but, I just had the thought, how fucjing funny would it be, if you had someone who’s never even heard of any of the Iliad or any of the related mythos read ‘The Song of Achilles’?
