“action but make it fashion” vid about the keftas was so illuminating to me, especially about how alina’s kefta symbolizes her relationship with power, and thereby with the darkling. at first the kefta is black with gold stitching and then its gold with black stitching.

the first kefta depicts two things: not only alina finally embracing her own power and discarding her desire to be like everyone else, but the key role the darkling played in it. he kept her in the dark by lying to her and manipulating her, isolating her from the man she loved. only once shoved into the darkness he crafts for her does she allow herself to embody her power.

yet when she finally does that, she soon realizes afterwards that it was all purposeful because this power which she finally claimed and owned, is now being swept out from under her feet by the very same presence that brought it out: the darkling. this is also after she begins to grow incredibly intimate with him, too. so that final dress illustrates the corruption of their relationship and of alina’s power. the black tendrils staining her golden light show how tainted her power is by his manipulation and attempted domination, and also how tainted she is by him. she truly and tragically is likened to him, not only in similarity but a dark desire for power and maybe even for each other.

people talk a lot about ben in “make me your villain” but my underrated fave is jessie as alina when her powers are taken by the darkling. like that was such a moment, the betrayal, violation and anguish on her face is so so gut wrenching i rlly wanted to hold her and protect her in that scene.

thinking of how alina couldnt have been a more perfect victim for the darkling. her sense of isolation her whole life is what led her to being so dependent on mal, but when she felt that tie severed, obviously she would’ve clung to the few people who also shared her sense of isolation and being ostracized in the palace like genya and aleksander. and the darkling took full advantage of that, even in the show, constantly manipulating her morals and desires by reminding her how outcasted and “different” she is like him; intentionally separating her from mal so she would have no choice but to rely on her relations to genya and the darkling; making sure she wore his color and then his collar (alina’s words in the book) when he put the amplifier around her so he’d have full control of her power. i could maybe ship darklina if he wasn’t so corrupted beyond redemption, because true love is built on equality and communication, not mere similarity and unbounded domination.

no i agree!! amita deserves all the credit for embodying inej so beautifully. she’s both harshness and gentleness which suits her character so well since she had to develop a toughness to survive the barrel even though she has such a pure heart. “ask the saints for me” and the conflicted look when arkken is begging fo his life was so so good. my heart churned when she almost killed him for the sake of her freedom. hope in the next season tho we see inej pray over the twins. swear i remember in the books she said she not only cried but prayed out of remorse after she took her first life and i think it shows how gentle and moral she actually is beneath her cloak and daggers.

s2 kanej wishes🕯🔮🧘🏾‍♀️

since the tv show has decided to kinda downplay the subtlety of kanej in this season (“i need you” “she’s not like you” skdhd book kaz would NEV-) i hope that in s2 we get the iconic scene where kaz wistfully watches inej with crows and then by the middle or end of the season, kaz has to do something rlly awful a la dirty hands (maybe in order to get back the crow club?) and this causes a rift between them since inej is still a moral compass. or he notices people might realize she’s his weakness as he starts wreaking havoc and causing problems so he intentionally starts pushing her away. it’d be heartbreaking to watch them at odds but i think we need to see the cruel boy inej has grown so familiar with in SoC and reestablish a lack of proximity and communication because that’s the point where they’re at when we meet them in the books and i still want to see those events and that development play out in s3/4.

i don’t feel like addressing what jessie said today on their story tbh (i stopped reading when they called brown face a costume) but i highly appreciated leigh’s manner of addressing it. she showed shame and remorse as well as maturity and responsibility without victimizing herself or defending the ppl in power of the topic.

thank you so much leigh for continuing to be so incredibly caring to the diverse demographics your writing has touched and employed. i’m not asian but i’m black + native american/pacific islander so not excusing brown face still meant so much to me. hope this discussion will really spur much needed transformation and diversification behind the scenes of projects everywhere.

since jessie and ben clearly wanna explore darklina and dark!alina more i’ll be real, i highkey want alina to go back to the darkling and act power hungry and cooperative, but pull a feyre on him and be secretly tearing his court/plans down. how angsty would it be though for the darkling when he realizes he was manipulated and used right back?

DISCLAIMER: i’m not a darklina shipper lol i want to see it explored more bc it’s undeniably the centerpiece of the s&b plot/aesthetic but i’ve been emotionally abused/manipulated by a m*n i thought cared for me before and it still haunts me so i’d hate to see it romanticized as endgame. rest of y’all be good tho.
