Software Training Final Piece: See Barbara Zine
For the end of our software training with Alex, we were tasked with creating a zine, featuring our lovely university building named Barbara Hepworth. This zine would be a photographic zine with an introduction and at least 14 pages inside.
Of course the first step was to take our own images around the building which was pretty fun to do. I focused on finding interesting shapes within and around the building and managed to collect a good amount of pictures to pick and choose from. I then took all of my photos to photoshop, editing them into black and white to ensure they looked good in monochrome. I altered the brightness and contrast in most pictures, and also added a grain and vignetting with the camera raw filter in Photoshop.
I then compiled them all into a 16 page booklet in InDesign, playing with layouts on each page. I even experimented with cutting my images up a little and separating them, I also added borders and played with sizing.
We had the option to print our first page onto coloured paper, however I decided against it as I had a paragraph of text on my first inside page, and I believed that using coloured paper would have made the text hard to read.
After printing everything off, I made sure to take pictures of the entire booklet (as shown above). In some images, the lighting would mess up on my camera, so I decided to edit all of my photographs into black and white again.
I think in order to have improved on this zine I could have experimented with my images a bit more. I sort of wish I had taken more photos that I could messily play with and try more editing methods, like use layering more. I could have also tried physical editing, like ripping up a photograph and sticking it back down on a page. If I had more images I could have also tried collage, which I think would have been fun.
