It finally occurred to me today as I was rolling my eyes at yet another post calling for a bloody uprising against the oppressors and saying "peace was never an option!" exactly what bothers the crap out of me about this mentality. By saying "peace was never an option" and contrasting it with violence, what they are really saying is that "pacifism, the negative peace that comes from an absence of conflict, and inaction were never an option." Which is true! Oppressed people have never gained rights simply by complying and trying to please their oppressors.

However, that is not only not the only option, but it's not even what is being proposed by the people arguing for alternatives to either inaction or violence. Diplomacy, protest, well organized strikes, mutual aid, incremental change through within-system advocacy, and coalition building are all things that exist outside this false binary. (And annoyingly to many in the mob violence fandom, these things tend to work better and get fewer marginalized people killed.)

But people are referring to both pacifism and diplomacy as "peace," and thus conflating them to make people feel like their options are either make peace with the boot on their neck or set the world on fire.

Here's a controversial opinion that really shouldn't be:

Palestinians have the right to live in their homeland (or any other land) with security and dignity.

Israelis and Diaspora Jews also have the right to live in their homeland (or any other land) with security and dignity.

These need not and should not be contradictory positions, because the entire point of human rights is that they're universal, and if they're not, then they're not rights, just privileges, and you don't really believe in human rights at all.

AO3 IS IN TROUBLE IF CALIFORNIAN AGE VERIFICATION LAW PASSES

An upcoming Age verification bill centered in California will be voted on Monday-- And as always,instead of actually protecting kids, it will lead to more online censorship and privacy risks, as it will force websites hosting to verify their users age by sending their ID, your browser history would be linked to it. if you live California, call your reps and tell them to oppose the bill AB3080 as it highly unconstitutional.

They also deem LGBT content harmful to minors, as well as mentions of weapons and tobacco, putting them on the same level as NSFW content.

Since AO3 headquarters reside in California, much like Reddit, Twitter,Discord and Youtube (and others) who knows how bad the effects would be. Instead of just effecting Californians (even then its concerning.) the effects would be US or even worldwide. VPNs wont help.
