It's Cloud Town Tuesday when I post an image from my graphic novel and talk about the process of making it!

If you haven't read it, the giant monsters in Cloud Town are all called Hurricanes and have similar naming conventions to the hurricanes in our world. That helped me choose names here by using the creatures that had been mentioned within the pages of the book as anchor points and going up and down the alphabet from there. By the time I was drawing this page, it was getting late and I had a lot of work left to do. The deadline was right around the corner and although I do love drawing monsters of all kinds, my imagination was starting to stall out from exhaustion. I made two choices that would help me finish the next three pages before the deadline in the morning. Can you guess what they are?

It's Cloud Town Tuesday! The day I post an image from my graphic novel and talk about the process of making it.

I hate to harp on the "hurry up and wait" aspects of bookmaking but if you are new in professional publishing it is worth trying to think ahead about what might be asked of you and to work towards that with any free time you can find. If you work for a comic publisher, I would recommend providing a list of useful assets a creator might collect, like extra illustrations, icons, or logos, because it's hard for creators to anticipate a publisher's specific needs. Knowing what's needed early can save an enormous amount of time and improve the quality of the final product!

While I was a first-time graphic novelist and was learning a lot as I went, I was lucky to have friends and family with published books. That's why I knew that end-pages might be a project I'd get, and why I had sketched some ideas many months prior while waiting for other edits. That extra time provided enough perspective to realize that all those end-page sketches were kinda well... bad. Instead of spending precious hours trying to resuscitate my earlier designs, I reassessed and found a new approach that I hoped would add to the world I made in the book. It's Cloud Town Tuesday The day I post an image from my graphic novel and talk about the process of making it!Months had gone by as I waited eagerly to hear about the next steps to publishing my first graphic novel. When I got an email asking if I wanted to illustrate a case and end pages for the Cloud Town hardcover there was less than a week before those illustrations needed to be in the hands of the book designer. I said yes before I knew for certain what a "case" was--Googling "case" and "book case" did not help. If you want to see a case, check last Tuesday's post, but for now all you need to know is that the case took a pretty long time for me to draw, which left me with 2 days to design 6 end-pages.  

End-pages are those pretty pages that glue a book into a hardcover case (there's a context clue for you), and for me, they had always been a thing of wonder. They are the wrapping of the book--the closest thing we have to music as we fade in and fade out of a comic. I was delighted to have the chance to design my own, but the time crunch was startling. But as they say, necessity is the mother of invention. This is what I came up with, and I'll tell you more about it next week!

It's Cloud Town Tuesday. The day I post an image from my graphic novel and talk about the process of making it! As proud as I am of the standard Cloud Town cover, there is a secret version hidden beneath the book jacket on the hardcover edition that has a special place in my heart. While there were dozens of drafts and compromises involved with the creation of the primary cover, this "case" cover was done on an extremely short deadline. This means there was no time to do anything but print the illustration exactly the way I drew it. There's an alarming amount of "hurry up and wait" in the publishing business and often the moments with the biggest time crunch produce some of the most interesting results.
