Angela Singer
Tumblr media
Beads, flowers, rhinestones, and recycled taxidermy animals. Angela Singer has combined these ingredients to create bizarrely beautiful sculptures using carcasses of animals long forgotten.
Bio from her website:
For the past 20 years, Angela Singer’s art has explored the human-animal relationship. Her art invites a new way of seeing and thinking about the animal. She is concerned with the ethical and epistemological consequences of humans using nonhuman life and the role that humans play in the exploitation and destruction of animals and our environment. She sees the boundaries separating other species from humans as permeable. Combining mixed-media with “recycled” vintage discarded taxidermy she aims to turn taxidermic meaning. She incorporates into the look of her work some of the history of the death of the animal.

Nikki Nye and Amy Flury: Papper-Cut-Project
Tumblr media
Using paper as a medium can either be rewarding or a complete mess. Nikki Nye and Amy Flury have made papper not only useful in their creative process but into a career. From twisting papper into ellaborate wigs, to cutting bits and pieces into masks of animals; these two are extremly talented.
The bio from their website:
Nikki Nye and Amy Flurry co-founded Paper-Cut-Project in 2009 a collaboration based on the transformation of simple sheets of paper into dramatic silhouettes. The Atlanta-based duo forged a unique linkage of fine art and fashion that has garnered commissions by several of the world’s top fashion houses and galleries including, Hermès, Cartier, Kate Spade and Valentino. At home on the theatre of runway, in site-specific installations and editorial, the paper sculptures work across many disciplines, including their recent collaboration with the Victoria & Albert museum, a 16-piece collection of paper wigs for their “Hollywood Costume” exhibit. Their work has been featured in the New York Times, Selvedge, Numero, and Italian Vogue.

Karen Watkins: Beautiful Art from Salida, CO
Tumblr media
I first came across Karen’s artwork on etsy years back, but was more than happy to come across her and her husband’s (Carl Bork) art shop and gallery in the little town of Salida, Colorado. Salida is one the top 100 best art towns, rightfully so. With an art gallery on every corner, there is lots to see in the quaint town. But Karen and her husband’s galley caught my eye.
Tumblr media
In the window were these gorgeous oil canvases of aspen trees and giant clouds, capturing the full essence of Colorado. These were Carl’s paintings. But right next to these fine art pieces was something a little bit more abstract and poppy. An old window frame with glass used as the canvas. The painting had these adorable bears.
Tumblr media
Simple but so cute! I was happy to see that she also sold these adorable and affordable art pieces with different creatures in her style.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She also has Tshirts! When I had to chance to compliment on her artwork in person, I recommended to her to create an FA (furaffinity account) because I believe the furry community would love her stuff. In fact, I get compliments all the time from her fox tee when I go to cons! So Karen, if you are reading this, please sell your art to furries, they will buy.

CON*TACT SOAPS: Caffeinated Soaps With Some Furry
Tumblr media
The first time I laid eyes on this wonderful company was back in 2015 at Further Confusion (Furcon) in San Jose. It was my first large furry convention away from home, but the dealers den (marketplace) had an array of stuff to buy, from artists making badges to etched shot glasses, there's something for everyone in a furry dealers den, furry or not. This company is no exception to that rule. Con*tact is a soap company from Lynnwood, Washington. They mostly make soaps but also make caffeinated solid perfumes and candles! They have a large assortment of smells, with a title fit for a furry: Lavandeer, Sakura Shishi, Lucky Fox(oak moss, violet), Painted Dog Pumpkin, Saturday Morning Cartoons (fruit-loops!!), Chai Spice, Absinthe, Hot Chocolate, Werewolf (wood, leather, musk) Wild Coyote (tumbleweed, Basil, Leather)...and much more!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They always have great deals at cons and online! These are a great gift for anyone! Just sud up a foofa, wash your whole body in it, DON'T RINSE for at least 2 MINUTES! Why? The caffeine will sink into your skin allowing it to have a better affect. Then rinse! So awesome.

AJ Fosik: Crazy Beautiful
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While scrolling thru a Juxtapoz a few years back, a magazine dedicated to modern artwork, I came across something I could not simply forget.  A large, firce, psycedlic like creature was starring back at me thru the pages. I had found the artists AJ Fosik. Though I could not dig up much about the artists, I must share with both my furry and fur-endly friends. Here is a short synopsis from an art critic I found:
“Fosik’s feral creations take the shape of fantastic beings that communicate a subversive, anti-religious commentary through the depiction of hyperbolized fictional gods. Nameless, assigned no specific meanings or powers, beholden to no formal faith—real or contrived—Fosik’s idols are not meant to contribute to some grand theological narrative of the artist’s design. They are masterfully made beautiful objects that examine the nature of spiritual iconography through an absence of religious discourse. In this way, Fosik points to the power and scope of man’s innate creativity devoid of divine inspiration.”
– Lainya Magana, Hi-Fructose Magazine, 2010

Everything from 6-mouthed wolfs, bears with human hands, 8 eyed bulls, and everything in between. I would die for an Aj Fosik Piece.

Ji Yong Ho: Tires Come to Life
The first thing you will notice from the work of Ji Yong-Ho are the ‘tires’. The tires surrounding the three dimensional pieces are relatively strange and rare in art. He accordingly combines various types of tires to create accurate forms of animals. In other words, he used tires to create sculptures. Of course, such creations require a perfect understanding of the medium and must also have the certain techniques required to handle the medium. But, that does not mean that his objective lies in tires. Tires are a medium that will translate what he means to express most sufficiently.
Tumblr media
There is verry little I know about Yong Ho Ji, or Ji Yong Ho. Other than his used-tire sculptures are beyond captivating. Here is a bio I found from his website:

This Korean artists has been knwon to use tires because “it represents things like flesh and muscles”. Either way, I would love to see this upfront.

Black Sad
Tumblr media
Juan Díaz Canales, a Spanish comic book writer, and Juanjo Guarnido, a Spanish artists, created one of the most beautifully detailed graphic novels I have ever seen.  Black Sad is a story about a anthropomorphic black cat who is a detective set back in the late 1950′s USA.
Tumblr media
All characters are anthropomorphic, in which their species represents their personality. There are countless stereotypes as well, such as most police men being dogs. Each chapter in the novels have a differetn story revolving around the darker and dirtier part of America’s history. One example is a story of John Blacksad who is on a mission to find a missing girl located in the south, in which racial issues are still highly relevant, such as a group of white fured/feathered/skined characters proclaiming the “white” was the surperior color. I highly recomened this series to those studying a bit of civil rights history in the U.S.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although both creaters are the book are Spanish, it was first published in French, then published in many other languages. Both have been awarded countless of awards, rightfully so. These stories are fillled with beautiful watercolor and ink illustrations that capture your eye. Wether you’re a furry or somone who is a comicbook lover, please read these wondeful film noir style stories.

Ellen Jewett: Sculpture
Unique, beautiful, memorizing; just a few words to describe her imagination. Captured in the winding and twisting sculptures made from the tips of her fingers, Ellen Jewett has a fascinating and whimsical take on the anatomyof animals with a splash of fantasy. I would do alomst anything to see her work upfront. Here is her bio from her website:
Plants and animals have always been the surface on which humans have etched the foundations of culture, sustenance, and identity. For myself, natural forms are a continual source of fascination and deep aesthetic pleasure. At first glance my work explores the more modern prosaic concept of nature: a source of serene nostalgia balanced with the more visceral experience of 'wildness' as remarkably alien and indifferent.  Upon closer inspection of each 'creature' the viewer may discover a frieze on which themes as familiar as domestication and as abrasive as domination fall into sharp relief.   These qualities are not only present in the final work but are fleshed out in the process of building. Each sculpture is constructed using an additive technique, layered from inside to out by an accumulation of innumerable tiny components.  Many of these components are microcosmic representations of plants, animals and objects.  Some are beautiful, some are grotesque and, some are fantastical.  The singularity of each sculpture is the sum total of its small narrative structures.
Over time I find my sculptures are evolving to be of greater emotional presence by using less physical substance: I subtract more and more to increase the negative space.  The element of weight, which has always seemed so fundamentally tied to the medium of sculpture, is stripped away and the laws of gravity are no longer in full effect.  In reading the stories contained in each piece we are forced to acknowledge their emotional gravity cloaked as it is in the light, the feminine, the fragile, and the unknowable.
Counter intuitively, while there is an appearance of complexity in design, there is a simplicity in execution. Each detail, down to the finest filigree, is free-modeled by hand.  Within each piece precision is balanced by chaos. The overarching aesthetic knocks on the door of realism, yet the hand of the artist is never intentionally erased; brush strokes and fingerprints abound.  Even the narratives themselves harbor a degree of anarchy as they are rarely formally structured.  Rather, I seek to achieve flow states while working to create a fluid progression of unconscious imagery.  That imagery, as manifest in tiny ephemeral shapes and beings, forms relationships and dialogues organically.  In the spirit of surrealism, this psychological approach to artistic expression creates a rich network of personal archetypes and motifs that appear to occupy their own otherworldly space. Within this ethereal menagerie, anthrozoology meets psychoanalysis as themes of natural beauty, curiosity, colonialism, domestication, death, growth, visibility and wildness are explored.
