Solid documentary on a living legend, Lucia Rijker.

For the uninitiated, Rijker is the "most dangerous woman in the world."  She's undefeated with a boxing record of 17-0 (14 KOs), a kickboxing record of 37-0 (25 KOs), and winner of five world championships.  Ridiculous.

Not only is she a beast physically and technically but you can also tell how mentally and spiritually strong she is from the documentary.  I can only imagine what she could've done as an MMA fighter, considering she started training in judo at the age of six.  AND she's beautiful?  GTFOH.

My latest obsession is female MMA fighters.

With the first-ever female UFC fight coming up on Saturday and Liz Carmouche being the first openly gay fighter in the UFC, it's historical all around.  It also got me schooling myself on the pioneering and headlining ladies of the sport: current superstar Ronda Rousey, the controversial Cris Cyborg, and the original face of womyn's MMA / fighter-turned-actor Gina Carano.

It's a natural evolution for me.  Michelle Rodriguez's breakout performance in Girlfight was a pivotal moment that got me emotionally invested in boxing.  She and that movie embodied so much of my identity in high school.

Which brings me to the Fast and Furious 6.  Now, I lost interest in this series after the first movie; my ahead-of-the-curve crush on Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez were my only reasons for watching it.  Even after seeing Rodriguez's return in the Fast 6 trailer during the Superbowl (and the Rock having replaced Vin Diesel on the crush tip a long time ago), it seemed more like a gimmick and not enough for me to go out of my way to watch in the theaters.  After seeing this trailer, though, I realized that Letty is probably a more central character than I thought.  And more importantly, she's in a fight scene with Gina Carano!!!!  EPIC.

Loved Salma Hayek's portrayal and interpretation of Elena Sanchez in Savages.  Possibly the only redeeming part of a movie that smacked of tired imperialist tropes.  I didn't realize that she artistically directed so much of the character.  I want her wardrobe (and la reina lifestyle)!

The Lost Sketchbook of Guillermo del Toro:

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro put all his ideas for `Pan’s Labyrinth’ in a notebook — then lost it.

The heavyset man ran down the London street, panting, chasing the taxi. When it didn’t stop, he hopped into another cab. “Follow that cab!” he yelled. Guillermo del Toro wasn’t directing this movie. He was living it. And it was turning into a horror tale.

The Mexican filmmaker keeps all of his ideas in leather notebooks. And Del Toro had just left four years of work in the back seat of a British cab. Unlike in the movies, though, Del Toro couldn’t catch the taxi. Visits to the police and the taxi company proved equally fruitless.

Del Toro’s films — “Chronos,” “The Devil’s Backbone,” “Blade II,” “Hellboy” — typically feature magical realism. Fate was about to return the storytelling favor.

The cabbie spotted the misplaced journal. Working from a scrap of stationery that didn’t even have the name of Del Toro’s hotel (just its logo), the driver returned the book two days later. An overwhelmed Del Toro promptly gave him an approximately $900 tip.

The sketches and the ideas in that misplaced journal — four years of notes on character design, ruminations about plot — were the foundation of “Pan’s Labyrinth,” a child’s fantasy set in the wake of the Spanish Civil War.

The director, who at the time wasn’t even sure he’d actually make “Pan’s Labyrinth,” took the cabbie’s act as a sign, and plunged himself into the movie.

Maleficent has always been my favorite Disney villain.  Just downright insanely creepy.  I never used to hear anyone talk about her and so I thought I was the only weirdo out there who truly appreciated her twistedness.  I guess that's about to change really soon.  Jolie better not eff this up!
