Fanny Churberg (1845-1892), beautiful Finnish views
I have written about Fanny before. She was the one who stopped painting because the criticism she got was rude and harsh.
I kind of understand her. I have started to think that sharing my experience of a toxic person is hurting those ones recognising themselves. Their ego starts to defend themselves in all means necessary. But it does not matter to me anymore. I was depressed for 19 years, there is not much more someone could do anymore 🙂
Maybe her criticism was just about her being gifted woman in a time of patriarchy when women were treated as properties of males. It must have been annoying that she had her own path... It must have been annoying that she could not be owned. I feel her there.
Fanny Churberg is a perfect example of someone who was brave enough to do her own thing. One of the reasons she was not recognised was her way of painting. It was different from the trend back then. ... What was the thing Greta Thunberg used... Ou yeah, "small dick energy and getalife.com". I kind of love the idea that she did her own thing and also ended her career because she wanted to.
Here, embrace Fanny Churberg.

The light in this stopped me. Made me wonder about all the work they needed to do in the 1600s to create the right colours. The light and the shadows in this are beautiful. There is a river ending up into the wetland (right corner). Small stream is turning into small rapid next to a cliff, beginning from the wetland.
Nice, calm and beautiful.
---
Nowadays many rivers and streams are cleaned up by humans. Straigthen and all the other things... Affecting the ecosystem we do not see because we live on the surface. It's like - what you can not see, that you do not think about. The meandering river in here is beautiful.

I picked up this one to be first because I like the atmosphere in it. The distancing is nice: storm, rain and sun in the background, warm sun in the front.

For the memory of rapids, Finland
Majestic views what we use to have before the rapids were destroyed and the rivers were crosscut. I have this file "Places" in the national gallery. I have gathered old paintings and images from Finland in there. It's ongoing project, there is tens of thousands images in the national gallery. ... These views are the only memory we have.

Painter Helmi Biese (1867-1933), Finland
Naisen pää, omakuva, 1887
Portrait (selfie)
I got interested in Helmi because he was student of Fredrik Ahlstedt. Fredriks painting "Girl from the croft" stopped me at UPMs old residende in Pässinmäki. (I just noticed the residence was sold in 2018.) His landscape paintings are beautiful and so are Helmis. There were only three pictures in Ateneum, but I found more from Pinterest.
Helmi Biese...
She was a teacher. Looked her up from Wikipedia. Funny detail is that teaching was disturbing her career as a painter, but she wasn't brave enough (?) until 1920s to leave the job and just paint. That is also the time she had her first exhibition.

Kuoleman puutarha, 1986, Hugo Simberg (1873-1917).
Garden of death
One version of this picture is in the cathedral of Tampere. Garden of death was Hugos favourite subject in 1986-1907. He did not see angels in there, he saw skeletons.
I think the painting is warm and beautiful. Skeletons seem to be happy and warm subjects in there. And they are taking care of the land. Simberg thought the sceletons are helpers of the death, plants and flowers are the souls of humans.
I have seen this painting many times when I was a child. Tampere is my home city. I used to stand long times in front of this painting, I don't know why. Many of my friends did not like it. I haven't been there in years, maybe I should visit again some day.

Playmates
(Child mortality was high and the famine years of 1860s were still in memory, maybe? People replaced flour with stuff like lichen, lichen bread... It has bad reputation, it poisoned the people and they died into it...)
Tanssi sillalla, 1899.
Dance at the bridge.
Tom Simberg & Bunka, 1913.
It seems like after Hugo, others almost "did not exist". I mean, I spend one day last week searching "Who was Tom Simberg?" Nothing. Results are all about Hugo Simberg.
If the "fathers name" is "too big" and he died early, it seems there is no room for the others. Tom used his life gathering all he could find from his father (1911-2006). His son, Jan Simberg (1942-2020) donated the collection to Ateneum. Jan continued his fathers work and transformed materials into web format (electric).
Luettavaa (easy to read):

Instead of viewing Hugos paintings, here are his photographs. He was pretty young when he died at cerebrovascular accident in 1917. The wounded angel is his most famous painting. It can been seeing in the minster of Tampere. He painted it after he had had a meningitis in 1902.

Finnish painter Ferdinand von Wright, 1822-1906
He was a mansion owner whom liked to grow flowers and useful plants. In the image below: His home called Lugnet is in its construction stage in this painting.
It seems he may have been an introvert? He had connections to outside world through his brothers. He himself lived peaceful life in Kuopio, having close relationship to nature and his home region. He was an observer whom liked birds and flowers.

He was different, interested in national romanticism. By that time they were teaching academic classicism. He studied in Stockholm, the royal academy of arts.

Beggar family on the road
In the age of 10 both of his parents died. He and his four siblings were placed in foster homes. I wonder if that was the thing making him interested in common people... He was born in upper class family, father was a doctor, but he grew up in poverty after his parents died.
He was talented and was granted a big scholarship to support his journeys as an artist. Robert Ekman was also one of the founders of Turku drawing academy (1830). They started to teach of sketching nude models long time before the Helsinki drawing academy did.

He was poor and had ill-health. Aukusti died in consumption in the age of 27. He was sick for five years before the illness took him. He died at Korsika, Ajaccio. There were only his Italian landlady and her family present in the funerals.
