Log: Retroactive “Art” Dump \ “Tough”
<Written 19th January 2021>
It’s been an especially challenging time for many of us. What does it mean to be “tough"? Perhaps one might think “unyielding” or “hardened” or “overcooked – too tough to chew on, a job NOT WELL DONE”. (I am unashamed of that pun.) The first image to pop into my head is leather. (Almost wish I’d thought of something else due to conflicts on leather production; for this log’s integrity, let’s roll with it.) In the world of fabrics, leather is known to be a sturdy, flexible material created by manmade chemical processes. Let’s focus on “flexible” and “processes”. “Flexibility” lets it move with the motion of whatever it encases or protects, while maintaining its structural integrity. It yields to force and pressure applied within reasonable planes. It cracks and flakes from repeated motions, but ultimately, the signs of wear and tear prove that it served its purpose throughout its lifespan. The “processes” undertaken to create the leather: on a molecular level, the original material is taken apart, reshaped, reinforced into something perhaps not quite new, but definitely transformed. Second thing that came to mind: “tough” as nails. I can’t find answers on the origin of “nails” in this idiom; I’ll arbitrarily pick the “tool” definition (sorry, fingers). A nail is hammered down into another surface, driven deep into invisibility, a rather pitiful purpose in life. But that nail, given the right form and application, can hold together, support and unite two completely different entities to create something new. Courtesy of research that blossomed from a G**gle search engine suggestion: The toughest known material on Earth is Nacre, the material lining the insides of mollusk shells, a.k.a. “mother-of-pearl”. With a rainbow sheen, it is a feat of natural nano-engineering mixing “organic and inorganic material combining the best properties of layers and solids, hardness and resilience, into a nearly indestructible supermaterial” (*1). Way to go, softie mollusk! May we be blessed to be the right kind of “tough” in our own tough times, whether to yield or unyield accordingly when chewed and hammered on by transformative adversity, to be true to our layered and iridescent purpose.
<Previously posted on Instagram @log.a.rhythm - but that was severely edited due to its character limit, dang! This one is less severely redacted.>

Log: Retroactive “Art” Dump! “If the plan doesn’t work, Change the plan But never the Goal.” - Source Unknown (I tried Google, but could not find the quote’s origin 😔) Background story: My colleague installed a whiteboard in her space, and asked for me to write a joke on it. I wrote “A joke.” \o/ Several Google searches and whiteboard drafts later, this was the quote she selected. It was fun to write. It has since been erased, but the sentiment remains. 😊 (“Unless the Goal was bad to begin with!” yells the pedantic troll in me. Hush now, troll.)

Log: First
(Originally posted on Instagram @log.a.rhythm) This log will focus on the temporal definition of “first”: foremost, earliest, before all others in order and time. First child, first breath, first step, first book, first job, first win, first loss, first heartbreak, first first first, an infinite amount of firsts. Maybe it’s the breathtaking beginning into something meaningful, into a second, a third, a fourth, a forever; maybe it’s an overlooked one-off in its insignificance - not all firsts are created equal, after all; maybe it’s the simple start of a simple habit that would unknowingly be carved into a lifestyle; maybe it’s a tragic step into a world of regret. It could be planned, or it could be spontaneous, or it could be stolen. A “first” might not always be the best, but it will always have a special place for the mere fact that it is the pioneer for everything else within its realm, little or large. A “first” will always be just that, undeniably and irrefutably. No iteration or reiteration can ever truly mimic a true “first”. Time is linear - no redos, no takebacks, no matter how desperately one might wish. If you are lucky (or not), your “first” whatever might be immortalised in a memento - a photo? A keepsake? Or maybe the wonder of a “first” might be lost to the natural fade of memories and time, for better or for worse. Have care with your “firsts” where you can; the precious novelty will not last forever. If it is a “first” that perhaps should not have been, make the most of it, and move on. Cheers to all the “firsts” out there - the good, the bad, everything in between, and the growth that will follow in whatever way. <“First” Log: Cringy, and Completed!> EpiLOGue: As per Murphy’s Law, in a poetic twist of life just trolling me in general, this log was originally written and posted almost a day before this, but was somehow mysteriously swallowed into the void of Instagram, never to be found again. Having to rewrite this mess of an essay from memory certainly brings flashbacks of assignments suffering a similar fate due to the hiccups of technology - always hit Save after every sentence/chunk of data entry now, folks. Cheers to my second “first” log!

Day 11 - Something from your childhood.
Ever had one of those candles that was just too pretty to burn? They're fascinating, especially to a child's eyes.
Also, the animation in Beauty and the Beast was amazing.
Disclaimer: Lumière belongs to Disney.

Day 11 - Your favourite food
I have no clear favourite when it comes to glorious food, but herbal chicken deserves special mention because I sorely, sorely miss it. It's been years... And kacangma chicken too, but that's too hard to draw.
(Zoom in for the near-invisible ginseng, I guess?)

Day 10 - Something you can't live without.
Three cheers for water, oxygen, and broken physics! Well, maybe not the last one.
Note the "scale" pun.

Day 9 - Your favourite anime/cartoon character.
Don't worry, Mulan. You're still (awesome)^∞.
Adapted from the movie scenes.
Opted for a different look while trying to stay somewhat true to Disney's art style. Mehhh... I tried my best.
