Yearly reminder that the tradition of putting an orange on the seder plate is about queer Jews, not about women on the bimah or about "equality for all peoples" in general. (Source)

*waves* i'm a nonbinary butch lesbian who covers their hair/head! i wear bandanas and those tube headbands on a daily basis and fancier scarves for shabbat/chagim.
Are there any gender nonconforming jews out there who wear tichels?? I've known many women who wear them for cultural reasons unrelated to marriage, but don't know about things in terms of gender nonconformity / queer expression as I know few other queer jews personally

Jumblr, important question.
Do you like matzah?
I know to the more sane ones among us the very notion that matzah is tasty or good may sound preposterous. And yet, somehow, such baffling humans, who enjoy burnt-tasting dried flour-water paste exist.
So yeah I was just wondering :)
I mean like, the regular kind. Not fancy egg matzah or whatever.

Hi!
So I’m currently reading through the Tanakh and had a question about annotations and highlighting. — Is it wrong or considered defacing the text to do so? It’s a Hebrew-English translation, I’m not sure if that makes any difference since it’s still a religious text, just not in the original holy language.
Thanks for your time!
hello! the consensus is that this is perfectly fine. in fact, it's a long-standing tradition for scholars to make notes like this. a couple of sources for you: [link] [link] [link] [link]
basically, the only thing i especially want to mention is that if you were highlighting the original hebrew is to be careful of the name of g-d, to make sure that you don't smear the ink or something like that, but if you're only highlighting the english, that's less of a concern.

A quick reminder to clean the wax off of your menorah before you put it away. Do it now, before Shabbat.
An easy way is to lay it down flat on a baking sheet with several paper towels under it and put it in the oven on its lowest setting (<200°F/90°C) for 5-10 minutes or until everything is soft and easy to wipe away. If any part of your menorah is plastic, a hair dryer is an even better option.
I know a lot of people go for dunking into boiling water but gentle, dry heat is kinder to any material a menorah might be made of.

A local glatt kosher market is advertising "this beautiful Chanukah sushi platter." This is not a phrase I would expect to see. Ever.

I'm not Jewish, I'm Catholic in fact, am I allowed to follow? I've always felt very interested in Judaism, especially from a fellow religious queer. Would that be ok with you?
yes, that's fine! i would just ask that you not tag anything that's specifically discussed from a jewish perspective as "catholic" or "christian" or so on, even if it's something you relate to. thanks!

i just pointed out in my judaism class that it’s interesting to me that when asked God’s name, God did respond with the ineffable name (the tetragrammaton) but put a much greater emphasis on who they are the God OF (I’m the God of Abraham, the God of Moses, etc.).
and my teacher said she feels a kinship with that because she remembers the joy that came with the first time she was called “(son’s name)’s mom”, and how beautiful it feels be named for who you love. and i almost burst into tears
