On a quiet morning 79 years ago today, Imperial Japanese forces attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. More than 2,400 Americans were killed and 1,100 more wounded. Twenty-one ships of the Pacific Fleet were sunk or damaged, including the USS Arizona. Shocked and angered by the attack, the country joined the Allied forces to fight World War II, inspired by the call of “Remember Pearl Harbor.” A moving reminder of the service and sacrifice of those who fought, the USS Arizona Memorial is jointly administered by the U.S. Navy and the National Park Service. The History Majors You Will Meet
i. History? You mean World War II?
ii. A jock who looks like they Do Not Belong but is somehow better than everyone else?
iii. Royals, most likely English. Need to know something about Queen Victoria? They have it covered, probably have a powerpoint ready
iv. Has read every single history book there is to read. Ready to fight all the professors with their strangely extensive knowledge on Literally Everything
v. Has read no books but is still ready to fight the professors on everything, half the class facepalms when they raise their hand
vi. Obsessed with latin and the classics, finds a way to make some connection to Ancient Rome even when talking about World War I
vii. Studies The Gays™ , ready to mention one whenever a topic comes even close to one
viii. Knows all the dates but can not remember names for the life of them
ix. Knows all the names but can not remember dates even if their life depended on it
x. That person who is just a little too into Machiavelli
xi. Already knows exactly what event/person they want to research for the rest of their life, has absolutely no interest in courses that don’t relate to that topic
xii. Could not care less about practical topics, only interested in things like pirates and witchcraft
xiii. Didn’t know what they wanted to do with life and picked history because “it gives you the tools for many different things”
xiv. “We should all just be communists” and “Marx seriously had some good ideas”
xv. Does archery, medieval sword fighting and medieval fairs in their free time, super crafty but can also actually kill you

Kawase Hasui- woodblock prints
To watch the sun sink behind a flower clad hill.
To wander on in a huge forest without thought of return. To stand upon the shore and gaze after a boat that disappears behind distant islands. To contemplate the flight of wild geese seen and lost among the clouds
And, subtle shadows of bamboo on bamboo."

I think my favorite thing about the humanities majors is that we're all still violently angry about the destruction of the Library of Alexandria.

Absolutely to be political, but I will not teach my future students whatever version of US history that 45 decides to write. If that means I can't teach, then I have other plans.
Students need the truth, even- no, especially- the hard truth. Teaching them anything else is a complete injustice to the people directly and indirectly affected by the atrocities they were subjected to.
I am committed to making sure people know the truth. No white-washing, no sugarcoating. It's not fun to learn about the horrible things that have happened but it is essential. I will work for the truth. Whether that happens in a classroom, that remains to be seen.
No matter what, I am committed.
Stay safe, stay informed, I love y'all ♡

Good morning, friends!
Y’know, I was thinking about what kind of post I could write because I haven’t been posting nearly as much as I would like to. Well actually, I haven’t posted at all lately lmao
My college decided to continue in-person operations for as long as possible this semester (problematic, I know, but let’s not get into it, it only makes me angry) and I thought maybe I’d try to write something about what a socially distant, quarantined campus is like.
And then God laughed in my face!
Long story short, on Wednesday afternoon, I dropped everything and returned home for a two week quarantine because I was exposed to the you-know-what! I lasted a total of 11 days on campus. Don’t worry, as of right now I feel just fine. Let’s hope it stays that way. But through the 16th of September, I am back to fully online learning. Not ideal, but better safe than sorry.
So that’s a bit of a life update. For an academic update, I am taking all education courses this semester and I’m going to be studying for my teaching certification exam. Theoretically, I’m going to be student teaching in the spring but we’ll see how that goes. Life’s busy! I hope everybody reading this is doing well.
Might mess around and try to post something during this quarantine. We’ll see. For now, here are my plant children(^v^)

What I've been reading:
I don't know about you guys, but Suzanne Collins is on my list of favorite authors. From the Underland Chronicles (check it out if you've never heard of it!!!) to the Hunger Games, her amazing writing style, the worlds she's created, and the characters that I got to watch grow and develop, I have never been disappointed by her and her books. So when I heard about this new Hunger Games novel, I snatched it up so quickly it was borderline concerning.
No spoilers here, mainly because I'm still in the process of reading it. But oh my god, y'all. This book is amazing so far. It has references to the other books, it hints at how the Hunger Games developed over time to Katniss' Games, it's had some twists and thought provoking moments. I'm not even halfway through it and I cannot recommend it more. Seriously. If you like YA and the Hunger Games, you can't not read this book.

So I've been quiet.
As a white woman, I had a very privileged upbringing. I've been taking time to educate myself, and I still am. I just wanted to make it known that I stand with the Black Lives Matter movement. So much needs to happen. We can and must do better.
I would like to make some content related to the US civil rights movement, the Civil War too, possibly. I've firmly held the belief that history is always relevant in our daily lives and that has become blatantly obvious in the past few weeks. I want to help educate on the more historical side of things. Would anybody be interested in that?
I hope everybody is doing okay ❤

Institutionalized racism
It’s taken us too long to post this on Tumblr, we’re sorry. We’ve compiled a syllabus that is free to all that addresses institutionalized racism and how it’s caused historic, pointed harm at the Black community in the U.S. Understanding history is key to understanding the present, and in order to make real changes, we need to fully understand the racist history of the U.S. Black Lives Matter.
Find it here: https://daily.jstor.org/institutionalized-racism-a-syllabus/

I definitely fell off the bandwagon of the Quarantine Challenge, which I'm pretty sad about. School became very overwhelming very quickly with my thesis deadline screaming in my face and finals quickly approaching afterward. I did pretty alright on my thesis, but of course, I wish the circumstances could have been better so I could have produced a better paper. And finals weren't terrible either.
School's over and I'm allowing myself to veg out for a little bit before embarking on adulting this summer. A summer camp teaching job I was up for fell through due to gathering restrictions in my area so now I'm scrambling to find another source of income for the summer (and possibly beyond but I'm really hoping it doesn't come to that). We'll see what happens, I'm trying to be more flexible with things 😂
I need to start preparing for my history education content exam soon so maybe some more schoolwork-related stuff will happen soon?? Who knows!

hey i'm sorry if you don't give advice but i'm starting my history ba in the fall and i keep psyching myself out. like i've been in love with history since i was a little kid, but i keep convincing myself that i'm not dedicated enough or smart enough to major in history and i was wondering if you have any advice for how to chill out or even just a description of what the degree is like :') thank you in advance/anyway
hello fellow history friend!!
i gotta say, first of all, congrats on choosing to go down this amazing path! history is the best subject, and while i am definitely biased, that doesn't mean it's not true 😂
studying history is no easy task, i will be very honest about that. i've definitely had my share of late nights and my roommate is always going on about how much more work i have than she does! but if you love history as much as you say you do, then it will feel right and the work will be worth it, i promise you that. i would say to take classes on topics/periods that you enjoy! and don't be afraid to dive into ones you might not be too familiar with. the greatest thing about history is that there's an abundance of knowledge out there and you never really stop learning c:
there's going to be a lot of reading and writing, that is guaranteed no matter where you go. it definitely helps develop your writing and critical thinking skills, so don't be afraid of the work! and i don't know if your department does this, but there's the possibility of going on trips for some of your classes! i took a US civil war class last semester and we went to a battlefield for a day. and i was supposed to go on a week long civil rights trip this semester but that was cancelled for obvious reasons :c
as for my experience, i go to a very small school with an even smaller history program, so the number of history classes offered aside from general western civilization courses is pretty limited. the plus side, though, is that my department is very tight knit. i know my professors well and they know me well too! and i've made plenty of friends in my department too, including one of my best friends. that's something to look forward to! i'm officially finished with all of my history requirements and i'm going to be spending next semester catching up on education courses! i'm actually pretty bummed out about it, it's gonna be weird not seeing my friends and professors all the time.
sorry for this very ramble-y essay, it is very late where i am. i hope i was able to help at least a little bit 😅
good luck and thank you for reaching out!
